Realising the fact that rap requires more energy, Okyeame Kwame fears he might not be able to actively do rap when he is older, so he is currently learning how to play the flute.

Speaking to Quophi Okyeame on his ’30 Questions’ show, Okyeame Kwame revealed that he has been learning this new skill for the past four months.

“Currently, I picked up a flute – atentenben, and I have been playing it for maybe four months and I am learning to play atentenben because very soon I will be old and weak and I still want to do music. Rap is tough on the bones. I want to be able to sit down and collect money from the Europeans and play it to them.

I will add a little drama, women with big ‘nyash’ in rafias and kente and create a certain persona and all that I am doing is to play the atentenben to them,” he quipped.

Okyeame Kwame, has matured in the music space over the years. He has grown from being a rapper to a musician who understands the rudiments of music and applies them in his compositions. After going solo, he has become more melodic even in his rap delivery, merging singing with spoken word.

His new journey of learning how to play a musical instrument (atentenben) is likely to win him a lot of spurs and cement his artistry in the music industry as one of the consummate musicians Ghana has produced.

Okyeame Kwame, has achieved remarkable feats in the music industry as he has distinguished himself from his peers with a brand that resonates with discerning music lovers.

He has songs such as ‘Woara’, ‘Woso’, ‘Anaa’, ‘Made in Ghana’, ‘No Competition’, among others.

About atentenben

The atenteben is a bamboo flute from Ghana which can be played diatonically or chromatically.

Although originally used as a traditional instrument (most often in funeral processions), beginning in the 20th century, it has also been used in contemporary and classical music. Several players have attained high levels of virtuosity and are able to play Western as well as African music on the instrument.

Atentenben

The instrument originates from Tweneduruase in the Kwahu Plateau of south-central Ghana. It was first popularized throughout the nation by the Ghanaian musicologist Ephraim Amu. It was also featured in the Pan-African Orchestra led by Nana Danso Abiam, and Dela Botri, a former member of the Orchestra, is among Ghana’s foremost exponents of the instrument. Since 2004, Botri has combined the atenteben with hiplife music on his recordings.

The atenteben flute is one of the most versatile musical instruments found in Ghana. The modern atenteben flute, built in B flat and C, was developed by the musicologist, composer and flautist Ephraim Amu (1899-1995), whose pioneering work established a notated musical tradition for the instrument and included the instrument into the curriculum of major educational institutions in Ghana, notably, the Achimota Secondary School and University of Ghana.

Okyeame Quophi: I wrote ‘maba’ diss song for Ex Doe https://www.adomonline.com/okyeame-quophi-i-wrote-maba-diss-song-for-ex-doe/ Fri, 24 Feb 2023 11:59:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2221125 Rapper and media personality Okyeame Quophi has disclosed that he wrote the famous 90s diss track ‘Maba’.

The song was written for and performed by rapper Ex Doe.

Okyeame Quophi was speaking to Kwame Dadzie of Multimedia Entertainment when he made the disclosure. Footage of the interview was posted on Dadzie’s Facebook, Thursday, February 23, 2023.

“I wrote for Ex Doe,” he stated.

Laughing, he quickly remarked: “This is why Reggie Rockstone will never like me.”

According to the rapper and businessman: “I wrote the entire song.”

He did a quick acappella of the ‘Maba’ song.

“My name is in the song,” he noted.

He categorically denied instigating a fight between Ex Doe and any other artistes per the song.

“Ex Doe came to me in Kumasi. He actually moved from Accra. He had a beat from Nana King [of Ashanti International Records] and was looking for what to say with it,” he narrated.

“So we brainstormed and the idea came because people were living in Accra, we were living in Kumasi. We were the kingpins of the Kumasi rap and an Accra person was claiming presidency,” he snickered. “Beefs didn’t start today.”

He cited a line from the ‘Maba’ Hiplife classic: “Whether you or someone said it, run and go hide!”

Explaining the thrust of the song, he noted: “It was to say, “My friend, you call yourself the president but you do not live at your residence.”

Okyeame Quophi, half of the award-winning Akyeame group, added that he has written songs for other artistes.

In 1996, rappers Ex Doe and Chicago released a big hit song titled ‘Daavi Mede Kuku’. A misunderstanding ensued soon after the success of the song, bordering on who deserved due credit for the song’s creation and success. It is said Chicago wrote all the verses for the song.

Three years after ‘Daavi Mede Kuku’, Ex Doe released the diss song ‘Maba’ to challenge Chicago. Portions of it were also directed at rapper Reggie Rockstone, alias Oseikrom President, who, living in Accra, claimed to be the Kumasi President of rap music.

Reggie is credited as the pioneer of Hiplife music.

Nii Lantey Vanderpuye breaks silence on Ursula Owusu’s attack https://www.adomonline.com/nii-lantey-vanderpuye-breaks-silence-on-ursula-owusus-attack/ Sat, 12 Sep 2020 13:37:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1853338 Member of Parliament (MP) for the Odododiodoo Constituency says he was not responsible for the 2012 attack on Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful as suggested by some members of the public.

Nii Lante Vanderpuye said he was baffled by such claims because he had no hand in the attack.

“I wasn’t even in Accra when it happened and that’s what hurts me,” he said on the Super Morning Show.

This comes on the back of allegations that he caused similar attacks on some politicians including Mrs Owusu-Ekuful when the National Democractic Congress (NDC) was in power after he was attacked in his constituency.

In 2012, the MP for Ablekuma West, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful was attacked by some thugs in the Odododiodoo constituency.

She was assaulted at a registration centre by persons alleged to be NDC activists after she had visited the area to encourage traders in the central business district to partake in the 2012 biometric registration exercise.

MORE:

Abu Jinapor, an aide to then-candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo-Addo was also assaulted in the constituency.

A recent attack on the MP by some thugs, believed to be members of the ruling NPP, however, has been linked to the incident.

Mr Vanderpuye, after the assault, has been accused by a section of the public including members of his constituency of causing violence against other politicians in the past.

Reacting to this, he said he has never had a hand in any of the attacks.

“I was in school with Ursula. We were in Legon together, she was a year ahead of me and was in Sarbah Hall Annex A while I was in Sarbah Hall Annex B. So why will I do that?” he said.

He added that he called her to sympathise with her after the incident, which he wouldn’t have done if indeed he had a hand in the crime.

“I personally called her and said ‘I’m sorry for what has happened to you in my Constituency.’ I’m not aware of that, If I had been around, there’s no way that would’ve happened,” he said.

‘Black Panther’ star Chadwick Boseman dies at 43 https://www.adomonline.com/black-panther-star-chadwick-boseman-dies-at-43/ Sat, 29 Aug 2020 06:53:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1847119 Chadwick Boseman, the man who brought “Black Panther” to life, has died.

The actor has been battling colon cancer since 2016 and died at home with his family and wife by his side, according to a statement posted on his Twitter account.

He was 43, his publicist Nicki Fioravante said in a statement.

“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you so many of the films you have come to love so much,” the statement said.

“From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy.”

The statement said the role of King T’Challa was the “honor of (Boseman’s) career.”

Boseman graduated from Howard University

A South Carolina native, Boseman graduated in 2000 from Howard University, a historically Black college in Washington, DC.

While there, he also attended the British American Drama Academy at Oxford in 1998, according to Howard’s website.

“It is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of alumnus Chadwick Boseman who passed away this evening. His incredible talent will forever be immortalized through his characters and through his own personal journey from student to superhero! Rest in Power, Chadwick!” University President Wayne A. I. Frederick said in a statement.

Boseman graduated from Howard University

Boseman’s breakout performance came in 2013 when he played Jackie Robinson in the film “42,” according to Howard’s website.

“His transcendent performance in ’42’ will stand the test of time and serve as a powerful vehicle to tell Jackie’s story to audiences for generations to come,” Major League Baseball tweeted from their official Twitter account Friday.

Boseman made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2016 as T’Challa/Black Panther in “Captain America: Civil War,” according to Howard.

Black Panther then got his own stand-alone movie that released in 2018, which broke box office records.

Marvel Studios president had previously announced the second movie of the “Black Panther” saga would debut in theaters in May 2022.

The actor starred in other films, including playing James Brown in “Get On Up” and Thurgood Marshall in “Marshall.”

Boseman returned to his alma mater in 2018 to give the commencement speech.

He concluded with his iconic “Wakanda Forever” salute.

MORE:

During his speech, the actor told the graduates about his early days acting on soap operas, saying he was fired from an unnamed production during his early acting days after he questioned what he felt was its stereotypical portrayal of Black characters.

“The struggles along the way are only meant to shape you for your purpose,” he said at the time.

‘A superhero to many’

In a statement following Boseman’s death, Martin Luther King III said the actor “brought history to life” with his roles.

“As Black Panther, he was also a superhero to many,” he wrote on Twitter.

“And despite his 4 year long battle with cancer, he kept fighting and he kept inspiring. He will be missed.

“The NAACP also paid tribute to the actor, saying Boseman showed “us how to conquer adversity with grace.”

“For showing us how to ‘Say it Loud!’ For (showing) us how to walk as a King, without losing the common touch. For showing us just how powerful we are,” their Instagram statement said. “Thank you #ChadwickBoseman.”

Sen. Kamala Harris, who is also an alumna of Howard, said she was “heartbroken” over Boseman’s death.

“My friend and fellow Bison Chadwick Boseman was brilliant, kind, learned, and humble,” she tweeted.

“He left too early but his life made a difference. Sending my sincere condolences to his family.”

Actor Mark Ruffalo, who starred aside Boseman in the Marvel movies as the Hulk, tweeted Boseman’s death contributes to the growing list of tragedies in 2020.

“What a man, and what an immense talent,” Ruffalo tweeted. “Brother, you were one of the all time greats and your greatness was only beginning. Lord love ya. Rest in power, King.”

According to him, the “alternative is still scary” hence the New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by President Nana Akufo-Addo, should be retained.

The outspoken NPP man said in their first term, there have done marvelously well in terms of socio-economic development.

“When you compare the eight years record of the NDC to our four years, Akufo-Addo stands tall. We have performed better,” he stressed in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Friday.

The former Director of Danquah Institute said President Akufo-Addo has a plan to transform Ghana through the many interventions introduced in his first term.

ALSO READ:

On the other hand, he said former President Mahama will increase the burden of Ghanaians if given another opportunity.

“The crisis we are in requires some serious thinking so don’t vote for Mahama who does not understand but Akufo-Addo has the vision and commitment to change Ghana,” he said.

Mr Otchere-Darko is certain his cousin has the interest of the nation at heart given what he [Akufo-Addo] has achieved in his first term.

“I will plead with Ghanaians to give President Akufo-Addo another chance; he is not perfect but he is on track, he means well for this country and must be given the opportunity to serve,” he said.

Organisers failed to announce the winner.

As Ghana Music Awards enters its 21st year, who would be adjudged its 18th ‘Artiste of the Year’? Could it be Kofi Kinaata, Diana Hamilton or Kuami Eugene, Sarkodie or Medikal.

Of the nominated artistes, only Sarkodie has won the ultimate prize before – 2010 and 2012. He could be the first artiste to bag a hat-trick.

All other contenders have won at least a different category. Kinaata won the Song Writer of the Year and Best New Artiste of the Year awards at the 2016 edition of the Ghana Music Awards.

His hit song ‘Things Fall Apart’, which is filed for the 2020 Artiste of the Year, is a critique on Christianity and it has been the subject of sermons in churches.

Kuami Eugene, a relatively new kid on the block, won the VGMA 2018 High-life Song of the Year.

Popular Ghanaian gospel, Diana Antwi Hamilton won the 2019 Gospel Song of the Year award after seeing off competition from Joe Mettle, KODA, and Obaapa Christy. She won the award with her ‘Mo Ne Yo’ song.

Her song ‘ Wa’ sem’ makes an entry for the title of Artiste of the Year award.

Medikal is the reigning champion for rapper of the year, he will certainly love to upgrade his status with the artist of the year award.

An award category for which he has been nominated, thanks to songs like ‘Omo Ada.’

Stacy Amoteng’s sickness started after a friend borrowed her clothes – Okyeame Quophi https://www.adomonline.com/stacy-amotengs-sickness-started-after-a-friend-borrowed-her-clothes-okyeame-quophi/ Wed, 17 Jun 2020 21:41:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1812924 Musician and radio presenter, Daniel Kofi Amoateng aka Okyeame Quophi, has opened up on his wife, Stacy Amoateng’s sudden sickness, claiming it was a suspected spiritual issue.

His wife, also a TV presenter, was known mainly for co-hosting TV3’s ‘Music Music’ live music show with Bola Ray but resigned in 2012.

She was off the screen for a while and not much was publicly said about it.

However, some news reports in 2013 said she was diagnosed with appendicitis.

In a recent interview with Kofi Adomah, Okyeame Quophi explained that his wife started complaining of a stomach ache in late 2011.

He said the situation landed them (Stacy and the children) at the Edumfa Prayer Camp, Cape Coast in the Central region because the illness persisted till 2012 even after she had had surgery.

Their stay at the Edumfa Prayer Camp at Cape Coast, he said, lasted for a year.

Narrating what led to their going to Edumfa, Okyeame Quophi said he received a call from gospel musician, Cecilia Marfo to send his wife there as it was revealed to her that she was unwell.

MORE:

According to him, it was only close relatives who knew about her condition so he was surprised that Cecilia Marfo spoke of it.

“It was a Wednesday evening, I was live on radio which is Rainbow Radio when Cecilia Marfo called me and asked where my wife was. I told her she was at home and she said I have seen that she is unwell and truly, nobody knew about Stacy’s condition. We were managing it because she is a celeb,” he revealed.

Okyeame Quophi said it was at the prayer camp that the cause of his wife’s sickness unfolded and it had to do with her clothes a friend of hers came for.

According to him, this friend came around one morning saying her door got locked and that she had to shower to get ready for a meeting.

“So we opened the door and she took a shower in our house, eventually took her dresses (Stacy’s). She wore one and took an extra one and even took an extra panty (new),” he said.

The friend, a lady, Okyeame Quophi said returned only one of the clothes she took and Stacy’s situation started some months after.

He added that the lady also owed his wife.

The radio presenter revealed that their stay at the prayer camp inspired the Restoration with Stacy show which airs on Joy Prime.

The story of 16-year-old who may die in 9 days over inability to raise GHC 25,000 for surgery https://www.adomonline.com/the-story-of-16-year-old-who-may-die-in-9-days-over-inability-to-raise-ghc-25000-for-surgery/ Tue, 16 Jun 2020 17:28:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1812326
GHc 25,000.00 may be chicken change for someone but for the family of 16-year-old Genevieve, that amount, if not raised in 9 days will dash every hope of bringing the once vibrant young teenager back to life.

On a normal day in September last year, Genevieve returned from school and complained of a headache.

Due to the prevalence of self-medication in Ghana, only a few people will take a ‘normal’ headache to the doctor and her Mother, Abigail Sey, was no exception.

The 37-year-old mother-of-four who has single-handedly taken care of her kids after the death of their father told ABC News in an interview that her only hope was to resort to prayer camps as she had no money to take care of Genevieve.

“We were there one day and she said she had a headache. We did all we could. I took her to may prayer camps because I knew apart from God no one will heal her and wherever we went, they kept telling different stories, from witches in my family to witches in her school. Later we took her to Atomic hospital,” she said.

At the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission Hospital, the reality of what was to come hit the mother of the now diagnosed brain tumor child, Genevieve.

The journey to save the life of Genevieve then began at the Korle Bu teaching hospital.

After Going through the first treatment at the hospital, Abigail and her daughter now need to raise an extra amount of GHC 25,000 as every hospital they have visited is refusing to treat her without the full amount in hand.

Raising this amount for a single mother with four children who earns an average daily wage of about GHC 10 is not the easiest of tasks.

But Abigail Sey is determined to find alternative ways of raising the necessary funds to save the life of the daughter whom many had described as the star of the family.

Genevieve’s only wish is to return to her old self – the once bubbly, studious girl whose only dream was to become a nurse and save the lives of patients.

Now though, her life needs saving as doctors say failure on the part of her family to raise the needed GHC 25,000 for a brain tumor surgery by June 25, 2020 will mean a possible end to the dream of becoming a nurse.

“I went to school and came back with a terrible headache. I told my mum and she said it will go but every time I went to bed, I cried…I want to see again and walk again, every time I pray I tell God to make me see and walk again,” were the words Genevieve struggled to string together when ABC News visited her at Dome in Accra, Ghana.

She, together with her mother and three other siblings live in the kitchen of a compound house, a space offered to them temporarily by the landlord of the facility.

Without the needed help, Genevieve and her family may not see a brighter tomorrow.

Captain Planet, Okyeame Quophi clash over ‘beef’ benefits https://www.adomonline.com/captain-planet-okyeame-quophi-clash-over-beef-benefits/ Fri, 22 May 2020 15:59:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1798783 Long-serving musicians, Captain Planet and Okyeame Quophi, have clashed over benefits ‘beefs’ bring to the music industry.

Jeff Sylvanus Dodji, known as Captain Planet, was of the view beefs have no positives whatsoever but only breed disrespect and even blood shedding.

He explained that beefs only entertain fans but add no significance to the artiste’s brand which is the most important element.

“No international brand will call you to come and perform a ‘diss’ song. In Ghana if you do a ‘diss’ song, your fans will be all over your page because to them it is entertainment, but in actual sense to you the artiste, someone can say something diminishing which can end your whole career.

“If care is not taken, it will get to a level where even fans will say diminishing things to artistes because they have availed themselves,” Caption Planet asserted.

However, taking a quick swipe, Okyeame Quophi insisted ‘beefs’ are necessary because they form part of the music business.

He explained ‘beefs’ or lyrical war are tools when used well can enhance the fanbase, career and pockets of artistes.

ALSO

“Every game has its own rules and rap is about self-expression, building your territory and protecting it. If anybody comes into your territory and you don’t defend, those who believe in you will be disappointed. Beefing is very necessary except when it becomes physical,” he said.
