Samini urges Ghanaian musicians to learn from Nigeria’s global success https://www.adomonline.com/samini-urges-ghanaian-musicians-to-learn-from-nigerias-global-success/ Fri, 20 Feb 2026 14:51:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2633246 Ghanaian musician Samini has responded to complaints by some Ghanaians over the growing influence of foreign music in the local market.

According to him, the trend should rather inspire artistes to work harder and expand beyond their borders.

Speaking to Doreen Andoh on the Cosmopolitan Mix on Joy FM, Samini said he believes crossing borders with music is not a bad thing but an opportunity for growth and global exposure.

“I look at Africa as a united group of people. So Nigerian music or Ghanaian music is African music to me. Music from North America and music from South America is music from in that case if I want my music to blow in certain territories I shouldn’t have a problem when someone else’s music is blowing in other territories.

“What I have to do is to look at the blueprint they are using that is helping them to go beyond their borders and be heard everywhere, so that I can apply that to what I am doing,” he said.

In the meantime, Samini has released his eighth studio album titled ORIGIN8A, which features musicians such as StonebwoyKofi KinaataKuami EugeneKaakieSoweto Gospel Choir and M.anifest.

The award-winning musician said he is hopeful the album will earn him recognition at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

Buy a lot of land – Samini advises young artistes https://www.adomonline.com/buy-a-lot-of-land-samini-advises-young-artistes/ Mon, 17 Nov 2025 11:04:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2600899 Ghanaian music icon Samini has urged up-and-coming artistes to make smart financial decisions by investing in land rather than spending on luxury items.

Speaking on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM with Kwame Dadzie and Doreen Avio, Samini advised young artistes to “buy a lot of land,” revealing that it was one of the best decisions he made early in his career.

“This is one of the things I did when I was young,” he said, adding that the advice came from an older friend who noticed his habit of frequently changing cars. “He told me to stop wasting money on cars and buy land instead,” Samini recounted.

Beyond music, the celebrated dancehall and reggae artiste runs several business ventures, including large-scale farming and property investments. He also operates a music and events company, Highgrade Family, which has nurtured several Ghanaian talents over the years.

Samini details what went wrong during GJA Awards performance https://www.adomonline.com/samini-details-what-went-wrong-during-gja-awards-performance/ Wed, 12 Nov 2025 15:23:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2599212 Reggae and Dancehall artiste Samini has explained the technical challenges that affected his performance at the recently concluded Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards.

Speaking on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, Samini revealed that he was not originally scheduled to perform and encountered problems with his stage monitors during his set.

“I originally was not billed to perform at that show. My friend is the current President of the GJA. I was out of town, and when I got back two days before the event, he called, so that’s why I went there,” he explained.

He added that despite the awkward situation, he did his best to manage the performance.

“To the performance bit, for a live performer, you should expect glitches here and there because it’s a live event. With this incident, my monitors on stage were off,” he said.

Samini noted that such technical issues are common for live performances and that he has faced similar situations before.

“This is not the first time I’ve been on stage where the stage monitors don’t work. Sometimes the platform allows you to communicate with the engineer through the mic. No matter how hard the place is or how harsh you might sound, you can say, ‘I beg you, fix my monitors before I continue,’” he stated.

He further explained that while the organisers had scheduled performances, technical glitches can happen, and artistes need to manage them professionally.

“I think the organisers did factor in performances because they had artists booked. Akwaboah was officially booked for the event,” Samini said.

Due to the faulty monitors, he had to end his performance tactfully. “You have to find a strategic way to exit nicely. Before leaving, I constructively said I would have done more if the monitors were working. I suggested meeting at the dinner, but I wasn’t even there for that. I had to find something to say so I could exit,” he concluded.

Samini warns doubters to stay ‘Far Away’ https://www.adomonline.com/samini-warns-doubters-to-stay-far-away/ Wed, 05 Nov 2025 09:30:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2596430 Music icon Samini has announced the release of a new single titled “Far Away,” a hard-hitting, street-conscious track that arrives as a prelude to his upcoming album ORIGIN8A.

The record draws on his trademark mix of reggae, dancehall and afrobeats to deliver a message about survival, focus and emotional self-preservation.

“Far Away” is addressed to the resilient hustler, the dreamer determined to rise above envy, bad energy and toxic influences.

The song combines urgent lyrics with Samini’s seasoned delivery to emphasize the importance of protecting one’s peace while pursuing success.

Samini explains: “It’s about recognizing the energy around you. When you’re pushing forward in life, not everyone clapping for you means well. Far Away is my reminder to keep moving, keep winning, and stay grounded no matter who tries to pull you back.”

The single will be released exclusively on Audiomack on November 6, as a lead-in to ORIGIN8A, a project billed to showcase Samini’s growth and artistic maturity.

With “Far Away,” Samini positions himself once again as a voice of truth and empowerment in African music, offering both a rallying cry and a cautionary anthem for listeners.

Shatta Wale honours Samini as Dancehall Pioneer at 40th birthday celebration https://www.adomonline.com/shatta-wale-honours-samini-as-dancehall-pioneer-at-40th-birthday-celebration/ Sun, 19 Oct 2025 14:30:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2589958 Dancehall superstar Shatta Wale honoured fellow artiste Samini, recognising him as a trailblazer who paved the way for Ghana’s current generation of music stars. The tribute came during Shatta Wale’s 40th birthday celebration at Independence Square on October 18, 2025.

While introducing Samini to thousands of cheering fans at Shatta Fest 2025, the self-proclaimed Dancehall King described him as one of Ghana’s greatest musical legends. The heartfelt acknowledgement marked a significant moment, given the often stormy past between the two dancehall heavyweights.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the person I’m coming to introduce today is one of Ghana’s greatest legends,” Shatta Wale told the massive crowd. “He is somebody who paved the way for us all.”

Shatta Wale highlighted Samini’s groundbreaking international performances across America, Canada, and Europe, noting that his achievements inspired younger Ghanaian artists to pursue global success. For many fans and industry observers, the praise carried special weight given the pair’s history of rivalry.

The tribute occurred during Shatta Fest 2025, powered by Mobile Money Ghana Limited in partnership with MTN MoMo, which drew massive crowds to Black Star Square. A major highlight of the night was a rare joint performance of their 2019 collaboration “Celebration,” released under Samini’s High Grade Family label. The performance symbolized reconciliation and mutual respect, bridging years of competition.

Samini’s influence on Ghanaian music remains profound. As the first Ghanaian to win a MOBO Award, he set global standards that artists like Shatta Wale would later build upon. His pioneering tours in Western markets during the early 2000s opened doors for the next wave of Ghanaian talent to shine internationally.

The star-studded birthday show also featured performances from Wendy Shay, Medikal, Tinny, Jupitar, and others. Adom TV’s Sister Sandy hosted the event, while Nigerian influencers Peller and Big Jiggy joined the celebrations. Fans dressed in white, symbolizing unity, victory, and purity, as requested by Shatta Wale.

More than just a milestone birthday, Shatta Fest 2025 became a celebration of legacy and gratitude. In an industry often marked by rivalry, Shatta Wale’s open acknowledgment of Samini’s contributions stood out as a powerful act of respect, uniting generations of Ghanaian dancehall.

I don’t control my fans – Stonebwoy addresses Samini banter, reveals last conversation https://www.adomonline.com/i-dont-control-my-fans-stonebwoy-addresses-samini-banter-reveals-last-conversation/ Thu, 17 Jul 2025 17:21:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556667 Dancehall star Stonebwoy has addressed recent social media tensions involving his former mentor, Samini, making it clear that he has no control over what his fans choose to post online.

Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM, Stonebwoy revealed he was surprised by the online exchanges initiated by Samini and reached out immediately to clarify issues.

“So based on the conversations, we were going back and forth. I said, ‘No, I don’t know about this.’ He was expressing that he wasn’t happy about what my fans were doing, as if I had instigated them. He said I should be the one to tame them. But they were only responding to what he had said. I don’t have any group chats telling them to go and do that. I don’t do that,” Stonebwoy explained.

He emphasized that he has never disrespected Samini, publicly or privately.

Recalling their last positive encounter, Stonebwoy said they met in a studio where he surprised Samini by recording a verse for one of his songs. He noted that their relationship had always been cordial up to that point.

Despite the recent friction, Stonebwoy said he holds no grudge and still sees himself as a junior brother to Samini, stressing that all he wants is love and peace.

He also recounted how, years ago, he took the bold step to visit Samini’s home uninvited to reconcile after a long period of silence—another gesture he believes shows his genuine desire to maintain a healthy relationship.

Stonebwoy urged fans to focus on positivity rather than fueling division in the creative industry.

It wasn’t political – Samini clears air on Ghana Tourism Authority visit https://www.adomonline.com/it-wasnt-political-samini-clears-air-on-ghana-tourism-authority-visit/ Fri, 20 Jun 2025 06:44:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546501 Reggae dancehall icon Samini has addressed the speculation surrounding his recent visit to the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), firmly dismissing claims that it was politically motivated or came with special favours.

Speaking on Prime Time with George Quaye, Samini responded to critics suggesting he benefitted from political perks, insisting the visit was purely professional and part of his efforts to promote an upcoming project.

“I went to introduce my project to Abeiku Santana. I did the same with KOD and tried to meet Rex Omar,” he explained.

According to Samini, the controversy was sparked by a miscaptioned post from a political footsoldier, which falsely implied he had been invited to the GTA and rewarded with “a slice of bread” — a metaphor suggesting partisan favouritism.

“That caption suggested I was invited and then given a slice of bread as a gift,” he recalled. “Implying that when your party is in power, you cut up the bread and pass it only to supporters.”

Samini, pictured during his visit with his team, Abeiku Santana, and GTA officials, emphasized that the Tourism Authority serves all Ghanaians—not just political loyalists.

“Tourism is open to everyone. Anyone in tourism should feel free to walk in and do business,” he insisted.

Samini pictured with his team, Abeiku Santana and some GTA officials during his visit

He also pushed back against a growing culture of political gatekeeping, calling for more respect for free speech and association.

“If a party falls out of favour, you should be able to step away and explain why,” he said. “That doesn’t make you an enemy.”

Samini’s remarks come amid broader debates about politics and partisanship in Ghana’s creative sector. A vocal advocate for unity across music, media, and tourism, the artist is currently preparing to release his eighth studio album, ORIGIN8A, later this year.

By addressing the rumours head-on, Samini reinforced his stance that national institutions like the GTA must remain inclusive and accessible to all.

His message is clear: Ghana’s creativity and tourism industry must rise above partisan lines and remain open to every citizen.

Samini reveals Mahama and judiciary actions make him a happy Ghanaian https://www.adomonline.com/samini-reveals-mahama-and-judiciary-actions-make-him-a-happy-ghanaian/ Thu, 19 Jun 2025 09:35:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546262

Multiple award-winning dancehall artiste Samini has expressed satisfaction with Ghana’s current leadership direction under President John Mahama, particularly the bold steps being taken by the judiciary to hold public officials accountable.

Appearing on the maiden edition of PrimeTime with George Quaye on Joy Prime, the outspoken musician praised what he sees as a shift toward transparency and justice in public service.

“As I speak to you currently, what we are seeing… I’m a happy Ghanaian,” Samini declared.
“I like the fact that people are being brought to book and justice is being served — or it seems like justice is going to be served. Things like that, I am for.”

While Ghana’s political landscape is often divided along party lines, Samini made it clear that his views are grounded in values, not partisanship.

“I won’t sit here and be walking on eggshells because I think that maybe a certain favourite of mine might be in trouble,” he said.
“I believe that if you are put in public office, it’s your responsibility to serve Ghana and keep the public purse at heart. If you come and do anything dubious, you should be brought to book. I like that. Things like that, we like to see.”

Host George Quaye asked him directly whether he believes President Mahama and the NDC government are doing a good job. Samini responded:

“The President and judicial system are doing a good job so far. That’s the area I’ve seen a lot of action. Anything else, I think, is too early to throw too much light on.”

Though known for his socially conscious lyrics, Samini has rarely made such pointed political remarks publicly. His comments on PrimeTime signaled a growing willingness to speak up on issues of integrity and governance.

He also made it clear that he is open to supporting any political party that shows promise.

“If the New Force political party comes out with policies that make me believe they stand a chance of giving us the best when it comes to governance and leadership, I’ll definitely go for that,” he stated.

For now, the “Linda” hitmaker says he is encouraged by the current wave of accountability.

“We like to see people get called out for what they’ve done wrong. That’s how we build a better Ghana.”

He’s more than a mentor, he’s my big brother – Stonebwoy eulogises Samini on live TV https://www.adomonline.com/hes-more-than-a-mentor-hes-my-big-brother-stonebwoy-eulogises-samini-on-live-tv/ Thu, 19 Jun 2025 07:33:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546199 It was an unforgettable moment on the debut episode of PrimeTime with George Quaye on Joy Prime when Stonebwoy, Ghana’s globally celebrated dancehall heavyweight, surprised his former mentor and long-time friend, Samini, live on television.

What began as a cheerful reunion quickly turned emotional as Stonebwoy held nothing back, speaking from the heart about what Samini truly means to him.

“I wish him long life, prosperity, and may his heart’s desires be met in their realist form,” Stonebwoy began, his voice laced with emotion.

He went beyond typical showbiz praise, offering something far deeper—a glimpse into their unbreakable bond forged not just through music, but through life and family.

“He’s a big brother to me, and when I say big brother, I mean it in its real form,” Stonebwoy emphasized. “When somebody is your big brother, it’s deeper than when someone is just someone you work with.”

It was a rare public affirmation from the dancehall icon, often seen as a titan in his own right. But on this night, he was the younger brother, paying homage to the man who gave him a platform, a name, and a foundation.

“Over the years, we have still found the family importance to stick together irrespective,” he added.

“That’s why family-wise, I refer to him as my big brother—because it is really what it is.”

For fans who have followed their journey—from Samini’s mentorship of a young Stonebwoy under the High Grade Family label to their occasional public disagreements—this moment felt like closure, healing, and love rolled into one.

Stonebwoy even shared a deeply personal reason behind his unwavering loyalty.

“I’ll be honest to say that he is one of the people who I say—anybody who didn’t meet my mother, I cannot take too personal,” he revealed. “Because he met my mom. He met my dad. You know what I’m saying? Like… he’s my big brother.”

Samini was visibly moved. George Quaye, the host, couldn’t hide his emotions either.

This was no staged TV moment. This was real—two legends, one bond, and a shared history that goes far beyond music, awards, and fame.

Samini calls for better pay for Ghanaian actors https://www.adomonline.com/samini-calls-for-better-pay-for-ghanaian-actors/ Thu, 20 Mar 2025 13:10:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2517068 Award-winning Ghanaian musician Samini has raised concerns about the poor remuneration of actors in Ghana’s film industry, stating that the pay structure does not reflect the effort actors put into their craft.

Speaking on a podcast, Samini shared his personal experiences on movie sets, offering insight into the challenges actors face, particularly with regard to compensation.

He admitted that despite his talent, he hasn’t pursued acting more seriously due to the draining nature of the profession, both physically and financially.

“It’s a very, very draining profession to be in,” he remarked, stressing that while he has great respect for the film industry, actors deserve better pay. He pointed out the disparity between the earnings of musicians and actors, illustrating this by comparing the performance fees for musicians and actor wages in 2025.

Samini explained that A-list musicians can earn between GHS 150,000 to GHS 250,000 for a full-band live performance, while lesser-known musicians make GHS 15,000 to GHS 20,000 for a 30-minute show in Accra.

However, A-list actors, Samini disclosed, struggle to secure GHS 10,000 to GHS 25,000 for an entire movie project, which may require up to three weeks of work on set.

“Some of the big names are able to push for maybe GHS 20,000 to GHS 25,000, but that even depends on who is hiring them,” he explained. On the other hand, lesser-known actors are sometimes paid as little as GHS 2,000 for weeks of work.

“It’s crazy, and something has to be done about it,” he stated, calling for a standardized pay structure in the film industry, similar to what exists in music. He suggested that industry players should set a minimum pay structure to ensure fair compensation for actors.

Samini proposed that A-list actors should not be paid less than GHS 50,000 per movie, B-list actors should earn at least GHS 30,000, and no mainstream actor should be paid below GHS 15,000 for any role.

He believes that a structured and fair payment system will not only improve the livelihoods of actors but also elevate the quality of Ghanaian films.

In his closing remarks, Samini urged producers, directors, and industry stakeholders to reconsider how actors are compensated, emphasizing, “I think you can afford to pay them slightly more.”

He stressed that actors’ hard work deserves recognition just as much as musicians’ contributions to the entertainment industry.

Samini’s comments have sparked a wider conversation about the financial realities of acting in Ghana and whether the industry can be restructured to ensure fairer compensation for all involved.

Many hope that his advocacy will lead to better pay and conditions for Ghanaian actors, helping the film industry thrive alongside the music sector.

As the first single off ‘ORIGIN8A’, ‘CHAANA’ sets the stage for what promises to be an album celebrating African culture, music, and identity.

Even before its official release, ‘CHAANA’ has generated significant buzz within the music industry.

In a social media post following the recent flare-up of tensions, Samini called for calm and patience, assuring fans that the matter would be handled appropriately.

Stonebwoy recently reignited their years-old fallout by expressing bitterness and making serious allegations against Kelvyn Boy.

He declared that he had no intention of reconciling with his former protégé, citing incidents of alleged betrayal, including claims of an attempted murder plot.

Kelvyn Boy, in response, took to social media to deny the accusations, describing them as defamatory and baseless. He also accused Stonebwoy of sabotaging his career and defaming him.

Amid the public feud, Samini expressed disappointment with the situation but maintained optimism that peace would prevail.

He stated, “Order will be restored at home… The second generation will have to study history a bit further to understand. On the grand scheme of things, we have chosen to let whatever has been against us be for us henceforth.

Stonebwoy and Kelvyn Boy’s fallout dates back to 2019 when Kelvyn Boy, signed under Burniton Music Group in 2018, parted ways with Stonebwoy.

Reports indicate their relationship soured due to misunderstandings and alleged misconduct by Kelvyn Boy. Despite an option to renew their contract, Stonebwoy opted against it, citing trust issues and strained relations.

Samini’s intervention comes as fans hope for a resolution to the feud, which has divided opinions within the Ghanaian music industry.

Samini’s epic response to fans comparing Shatta Wale’s album to Stonebwoy’s https://www.adomonline.com/saminis-epic-response-to-fans-comparing-shatta-wales-album-to-stonebwoys/ Mon, 23 Sep 2024 09:00:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2452313

Ghanaian dancehall legend, Samini lashed out at a fan who tried to spark controversy by asking for his opinion on the performance of Shatta Wale’s SAFA album compared to Stonebwoy’s hit song “Jejereje.”

The interaction took place during one of Samini’s live sessions on social media, where some fans infiltrated the comment section with questions about his former protégé, Stonebwoy.

Visibly irritated by the question, Samini didn’t hold back in his reply as he believes the question is a trap intended for him to be dragged.

Samini made it clear that he doesn’t believe Shatta Wale’s album has flopped, before ordering the fan to direct their question elsewhere:

Making his stance even clearer, Samini told the fan that he is focused on his own career and doesn’t entertain such divisive comparisons.

“Why are you interested in my opinion? You’re setting a trap for me to be dragged. My opinion is that you don’t have sense to even compare in the first place. You can’t ask that one-on-one; you hide behind social media to instigate things.

He challenged fans to approach him personally if they truly wanted his opinion.

Before the noise, there was Samini: The real architect of African dancehall https://www.adomonline.com/before-the-noise-there-was-samini-the-real-architect-of-african-dancehall/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 01:27:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2438177 The term ‘Afro’ represents Africa, so it naturally follows that ‘Afro-Dancehall’ is synonymous with ‘African Dancehall’.

While some may argue semantics, the facts remain unchanged. The current debate surrounding this title is largely fueled by recency bias, which tends to obscure the true origins and contributions to the genre.

In the music industry, while titles and bragging rights are often subjective and can be inflated by personal biases, the importance of factual history cannot be overstated.

Before your favorite artistes emerged on the scene, someone had already laid the groundwork and set the pace for them to follow. The influence of pioneers like Yoggi Doggi, Sonni Balli of blessed memory, Root Eye, and others cannot be dismissed, even if their visibility has diminished over time. Their contributions are still relevant today.

That brings us to SAMINI. For those who are fans of modern-day ‘Afro-Dancehall’, it’s important to recognise that your favorites do not compare to him. When your current GOATS were still finding their footing, SAMINI was already reigning supreme as the African Dancehall King, a title he claimed with authority and far-reaching influence. The records speak for themselves.

It’s worth noting that your ‘World Alerted Lyrical Entertainer’, after a brief brush with fame, lost his ‘bandana’ and disappeared for a time, only to re-emerge in 2013 by leveraging controversy and the denigration of a woman. This has been his modus operandi ever since.

Let’s set the record straight: the ‘African Dancehall’ genre and the title of ‘African Dancehall King’ were coined by Samini around 2006/2007. This is evident in his feature on Tic Tac’s ‘Kangaroo’ track and in his song ‘African Lady’ from the Samini album, released in 2007. Since his industry debut in 1999, Samini has used his unparalleled musical talent to inspire, motivate, entertain, and influence millions of music lovers worldwide. Before Samini, the ‘African Dancehall’ genre or title simply did not exist.

Samini

The true ‘African Dancehall King’ has held the throne since the early 2000s, representing the culture for years. Samini even took it upon himself to leave a lasting legacy by mentoring and guiding some of the artists who are now celebrated as ‘GOATS.’

It’s common for students to surpass their teachers in terms of achievements, status, and more, but that doesn’t diminish the value of those teachers. Their teachings and guidance shaped who we are today. It’s natural and fulfilling to outshine those who taught us—after all, as the Bible says, “the glory of the latter shall be greater than that of the former.” However, it’s important not to let ignorance cloud our judgment or prevent us from learning and improving.

“Nipa yɛ ade ah, ɔsɛ ayeyi. Sɛ wonnyi n’ayɛ ah, mɛnsɛi ne din.” Now, find time and listen to the lyrics of Samini’s feature in Tic’s song, ‘Kangaroo’. It encapsulates the essence of this entire conversation. The song was released in 2006—where were your ‘GOATS’ and kings back then?

Samini was already leading the charge, long before the genre gained the mainstream recognition it enjoys today.

Kofi Kinaata credits success to Samini’s High Grade Family https://www.adomonline.com/kofi-kinaata-credits-success-to-saminis-high-grade-family/ Mon, 22 Apr 2024 15:07:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2384083 Ghanaian musician, Kofi Kinaata has opened up about the pivotal role played by the High Grade Family in shaping his successful music career.

Speaking on Radio XYZ monitored by Adomonline.com, Kinaata expressed his gratitude to the music group, particularly it’s founder, renowned artiste, Samini.

He revealed at a time when he was struggling to find his feet in the music industry, Samini identified his potentials and offered him mentorship and support.

He credited Samini for providing him with platforms to showcase his talent, even when he felt he didn’t deserve them initially.

Kinaata’s affiliation with the High Grade Family not only exposed him to wider audiences but also facilitated collaborations and performances that further solidified his place in the music industry.

He likened the impact of Samini’s mentorship to that of a seasoned artist like Sarkodie signing a protege.

“When I was signed, Samini’s fans became my fans automatically. When Samini was performing he gave me opportunities to prove myself and I didn’t disappoint. It’s just like Sarkodie signing an artiste, the artiste automatically gets the support of his fanbase,” he said.

It is for this reason he expressed belief that without Samini and High Grade Family’s support, he may not have achieved the level of success he enjoys today.

According to him, the two musicians got inspiration from his songs to produce their first hit songs and broke into the music industry.

He made these comments in an interview with Joy Prime’s Roselyn Felli on the Friday edition of Prime Morning show.

“Samini copied me. He listened to my music to write his ‘Linda’ song. Shatta Wale also listened to one of my Sass Squad songs to become Shatta Wale. They all came from me,” he said.

This response came after he performed an acapela and the host asked as who between him and Samini copied the other since they have similar style.

As a result, he considers himself the pacesetter in raggea-dancehall music, claiming all artistes within that genre followed his trades.

The musician shared how he aggressively promoted raggea-dancehall music when he was privileged to host a show on radio to draw attention to the genre. “So, within my time, raggea-dancehall became big in Ghana.”

Fiifi Selah further indicated that Sarkodie is the only rapper that is able to follow and mimic his style of rap because it is not the usual style every musician can flow with.

“Nobody can rap my rap; only Sarkodie can do it because my rap is hard to get,” he bragged.

That notwithstanding, he is proud of the impact his songs has made on other over the years musicians including, Kofi Kinaata and Ayesem, amongst others.

Fiifi Selah formally called Scooby Selah was a member of the music duo which emerged during the late 90s, Th 4 Kwages formerly Sass Squad. The group was known for their popular songs like ‘Nana Esi,’ ‘Kwakyemu,’ ‘Menya Obaa Fefe,’ ‘Serwaa,’ ‘Wongye’ and more.

A young man on the platform responded by calling Samini “foolish,” leading to a heated exchange between the two.

In his initial posts, Samini aired his grievances about the Black Stars’ performance, criticizing some players for their display in the match, which ended in a draw.

The young X user, while tagging Samini, expressed more concern about the artiste acting like a know-it-all rather than focusing on the players’ failure.

Samini, surprised by the insult, questioned why the young man would resort to name-calling when he was expressing his disappointment as a Ghanaian.

Despite opinions being free, Samini emphasized that insults were unnecessary and urged the individual to express disagreement without resorting to offensive language.

In response, the X user appeared unfazed and continued seemingly mocking Samini. The musician, however, maintained his stance, stating that he would find the individual.

The exchange took a turn when the X user later apologized to Samini in private messages, citing frustrations as the reason for his behaviour.

Meanwhile, Samini, demonstrating grace, forgave the young man and encouraged him to be a better version of himself.

While the incident began with tension and insults, it ended on a note of reconciliation, with Samini choosing forgiveness over continued animosity.

While recognizing the challenges the team has faced in the tournament, Samini remains optimistic about their prospects.

He predicted a score line of 2-0 in favour of the Black Stars, judging by their performance in the previous games.

According to him, Shatta Wale has been advocating for the same agenda, hence it is surprising that he would now oppose the same thing he has been calling for.

The Shatta Movement boss said the idea of giving priority to Ghana music in the country is not feasible.

Though he advocated for the same agenda years ago, he is convinced Samini and his team are leading this campaign to make money.

This double standards, according to Samini is just an attempt by Shatta Wale to sabotage the initiative he stared since 2017.

“All the grammar from you of all people won’t make me change my stance. #playghana just like we’ve always advocated for. You actually had an address to the nation stating these facts. My legend, you just have to know we are too grown now to bullshit the agenda. Nothing is wrong if creatives are on that path, but the question is: Do the creative themselves play their roles well to make these DJ’s play your songs… BIG NO! WHY?

Shut up! – Samini jabs Shatta Wale over comments on #PlayGhana agenda https://www.adomonline.com/shut-up-samini-jabs-shatta-wale-over-comments-on-playghana-agenda/ Mon, 18 Dec 2023 12:45:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2333756 The rift between two of Ghana’s prominent music icons, Samini and Shatta Wale, continues to escalate as they lock horns again over the #PlayGhana initiative aimed at boosting the airplay of local music in the country.

The #PlayGhana initiative by Small God, Samini, Black Sherif and several industry players, seeks to promote local music on Ghanaian airwaves to counter the dominance of foreign music in the country.

However, dancehall King, Shatta Wale has downplayed the impact of the agenda.

According to him, just 10% of foreign music would consume Ghana’s entire music industry, adding that the initiative was borne out of sheer hunger on the part of the advocates.

Interestingly, Shatta Wale had previously attempted to spearhead a similar campaign, which was shot down by fellow artistes.

Based on this backdrop, netizens are convinced he is just opposing the #PlayGhana initiate out of spite.

In a sharp retort, Samini, a key advocate of the initiative, lashed out at Shatta Wale, urging him to shut up and refrain from baseless criticism.

Samini highlighted Ghana’s recent musical achievements and emphasized that a conscious efforts could propel the country’s music to greater heights.

“What’s wrong with creatives appealing for more local content on our airwaves? Who does this hurt? So if it’s not your suggestion then it’s nonsense eeh lol,” a charged Samini quizzed Shatta.

Samini reiterated his support for#PlayGhana agenda and urged other stakeholders to come on board.

Samini, Black Sherif, Smallgod, others lead #PlayGhana initiative; ‘This is long overdue’ https://www.adomonline.com/samini-black-sherif-smallgod-others-lead-playghana-initiative-this-is-long-overdue/ Thu, 14 Dec 2023 15:57:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2332301 The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry in collaboration with the Creative Arts Agency and some stakeholders of the music industry on Thursday, launched the #PlayGhana initiative.

This initiative aims to promote Ghanaian music across the country ahead of the Christmas ‘detty December’ activities where there is an influx of diasporans spending their holidays in Ghana.

Speaking at the press briefing, The Director of the Creative Arts Agency, Gyankroma Akufo-Addo, noted that through the Christmas season, a time when the creative community shines, Ghanaian culture, including fashion, arts and food, travels to other parts of the world courtesy of diasporans. However, music always lags.

“Today marks the day that we are pledging to push Ghanaian music to the forefront of our audiences, starting at home. The Creative Arts Agency will collaborate with stakeholders and players of the music industry, film and broadcasting to review our local content regulations,” she noted.

Miss Akufo-Addo added that “both the Cultural Policy and the Broadcasting Bill must be amended and enforced. Our Nigerian cousins have implemented 70% local content law, within music, film and broadcasting, Ghana must do the same.”

Also at the #PlayGhana press briefing, musicians Smallgod, Samini, Reggie Rockstone and Black Sherif were present to help push the initiative.

Samini noted that it was high time Ghanaian music was given at the front seat stating that the consistent play of foreign music over local songs has greatly affected the promotion of the industry.

“We’ve always been advocating the fact that we need to hear more of our music when we are in our own territory. Because that’s what we see when we go to other territories. If you go to Kenya, for instance, you hear strictly East African music. Yes, of course, we have the Nigerian invasion, which is inevitable, which is not the competition here.”

“That’s not the complaint here. That’s not the target here. What we’re talking about is that, especially for the fact that we have beyond the return, which has become like an asset to Ghana, should anybody travel here and listen to 70% foreign music and 30% Ghanaian music, then what music have we sold to those who returned,” Samini added.

The ‘My Own’ hitmaker stated that Ghanaian music is underrepresented on streaming platforms explaining that continuously feeding the public foreign music has introduced them to other singers rather than the country’s own.

“It has to be a deliberate approach. It has to be strategic and deliberate, without malice to any other force or any other group. Let’s make sure ours is ours, and let’s make it appealing to the masses,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, Black Sherif stated that they are not apportioning blame to anyone but rather hoping for a united front to push Ghanaian music.

“You know, this is not a blame game. We are not blaming DJs. We are not blaming artists. We are not blaming consumers. It’s a step in the right direction for us all, our music and our culture. So play Ghana. Blessings.”

Meanwhile, Smallgod stated that this was not to stoke competition with anyone or country but a project to garner support for the music industry.

He hoped that every stakeholder and the general public support the agenda.

“We’re not saying don’t play other music, you could play other music but let the people feel Ghana and feel us,” Smallgod added.

Let’s make our music appealing to the masses – Samini urges https://www.adomonline.com/lets-make-our-music-appealing-to-the-masses-samini-urges/ Thu, 14 Dec 2023 14:42:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2332229 Ghanaian musicians Samini, Black Sherif and Reggie Rockstone have joined in the #PlayGhana campaign by music entrepreneur, Smallgod which aims at playing and promoting Ghana music.

The artistes joined Smallgod at a Minister’s briefing on Thursday 14th December 2023 in Accra on the topic “Promoting the initiative #playghana to push local music content for the Christmas period and lead to legislation for broadcasting local content act.”

Samini in a brief speech encouraged the need to prioritize Ghana music for enhanced promotion, especially during the end-of-the-year festivities.

“We have always been advocating the fact we need to hear more of our own music when we are in our own territory because that’s what we see when we go outside. Especially for the fact that we have ‘Beyond the Return’ which has become like an assert to Ghana, should anybody travel here and listen to 70% foreign music and 30% Ghanaian music then what music have we sold to those who returned?”

Samini claims Amapiano is a repackaged version of Ghana’s Azonto https://www.adomonline.com/samini-claims-amapiano-is-a-repackaged-version-of-ghanas-azonto/ Mon, 04 Dec 2023 15:37:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2327849 Ghanaian dancehall artiste, Samini, has stirred up a debate in the music world by asserting that the popular South African music genre, Amapiano, is essentially a rebranded and repackaged version of Ghana’s iconic Azonto.

In a recent interview on Property FM, Samini explained his perspective, emphasizing the similarities between the two genres and their roots in Ghanaian music.

While acknowledging that Amapiano originated in South Africa as a subgenre of house music in the mid-2010s, Samini argued that the composing elements of Amapiano heavily borrow from Azonto, which gained widespread popularity across various countries during its heyday.

The Sweet Mistake crooner went on to claim, “Today if you do Azonto and you add one or two things to it, somebody will say it’s Amapiano, but Amapiano is something which is already South African.”

Despite the similarities, Samini was quick to distinguish between the two genres, acknowledging that Amapiano has its roots in South Africa. He stated, “Amapiano is always going to be South African, so after everybody tried with Azonto, at the end, it’s Ghana that you will connect it to. So Amapiano will be connected to South Africa, but going forward, Ghana music remains Ghana music.”

The debate surrounding the influences and origins of music genres is not uncommon in the industry, with artists often expressing their views on the evolution and globalization of musical styles.

Samini’s perspective adds a unique angle to the ongoing discourse, highlighting the interconnectedness of African musical traditions and the evolving nature of genres across the continent.

Samini shares experience after winning first award https://www.adomonline.com/samini-shares-experience-after-winning-first-award-as-an-artiste/ Fri, 13 Oct 2023 11:13:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2305478 Ghanaian Reggae-Dancehall artiste, Emmanuel Andrews Samini, professionally known as Samini has said winning an award at the early state of one’s career in the music industry is a huge confidence booster.

Speaking on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz with DJ Slim, the MTV Africa Music Award-winning artiste explained that, receiving recognition for hard work at the inception of an artiste’s career often spur them to deliver compelling musical content.

“If you win an award at the very beginning of your career, it boosts your morale. It makes you ready to go out there and show more of what you have,” he stated.

Samini said after being in the industry for over two decades, it is fulfilling for him to see young artistes receive international awards and be recognised for their talent.

He feels a sense of pride and happiness seeing the new generation of artistes being recognised.

“After some experiences, you don’t feel the same about awards anymore, you’re more excited for the young ones who are doing well” he stressed.

Samini also urged others who are yet to win awards not to despair but rather work hard to achieve their goals.

Awards schemes in Ghana play a crucial role in recognising and appreciating the hard work of artistes. It gives value and elevates their brand internationally.

International awards are equally important for artistes. Their talents are not only recognised globally, it also provides them with immense exposure and opportunities for collaboration.

International awards schemes like the Grammys and BET Awards have helped elevate careers of famous Ghanaian musicians like Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Camidoh, Amaarae, King Promise and recently, Black Sherif.

No hit song can beat ‘My Own’ banger – Samini https://www.adomonline.com/no-hit-song-can-beat-my-own-banger-samini/ Tue, 19 Sep 2023 15:28:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2295892 Celebrated dancehall artist, Samini, has said no contemporary hit song can beat his hit song, ‘My Own’.

According to him, he is a force to reckon with despite taking a four-year hiatus to pursue further education at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

Samini made the comments on TV3 in response to assertions that his career has dipped.

According to him, not every artiste can take a break for four years and still dominate a fast-growing industry like he has, hence some respect must be put to his name.

Samini indicated that, the collective output of his top contemporaries, the “3S” (Shatta Wale, Sarkodie, and Stonebwoy), does not match the impact made by his 2018 hit, “My Own.”

Samini commended Stonebwoy for doing extremely well with his ‘5th Dimension’ album citing ‘Into the Future’ track as his favorite.

Aside that, he holds strong belief that, he is in a comfortable lead with respect to relevance and lyrical prowess.

Building national cathedral is a misplaced priority – Samini https://www.adomonline.com/building-national-cathedral-is-a-misplaced-priority-samini/ Tue, 19 Sep 2023 12:36:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2295783 Popular Ghanaian reggae/dancehall musician, Samini has expressed a strong disapproval of government’s decision to build a national cathedral in the face of the prevailing economic challenges.

Speaking on The Day show earlier today, Samini, real name, Emmanuel Andrews Samini described the decision as a misplaced priority.

Samini made the remark in reply to whether the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) he once supported had let him down.

The “My Own” hitmaker didn’t hold back his frustrations and disappointments during his submissions, with the building of National cathedral being of grave concern to him.

He emphasised that, at a critical moment when the country needed to focus on setting its priorities right to address the prevailing economic challenges, allocating resources for the construction of a national cathedral seemed far from prudent.

“I am a person that does not buy into the idea of building a national Cathedral. That is purely a misplaced priority,” Samini stated.

He entreated government to pay critical attention and provide resources to relevant sectors such as healthcare, education, create jobs to alleviate poverty.

According to him, that should motivate Ghanaian musicians to work harder and break boundaries.

“If I am in my territory and I hear a song from another person; I know they are putting in the work here. So we have to look at how we can also penetrate the industry” Samini said in an interview on Adom TV‘s show Showtym with Andy Dosty.

Nigerian music has taken over the airwaves in Ghana and recently, Amapiano genre from South Africa is giving competition to local artistes competition.

But Ghanaian musicians blame the phenomenon on DJs and called for equitable airplay.

But Samini is not the only musician who is not against the influx of foreign songs in Accra.

Samini speaks on feud with Sarkodie [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/samini-speaks-on-feud-with-sarkodie-video/ Mon, 11 Sep 2023 12:27:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2292591 Dancehall icon, Samini has spoken about his long-standing feud with rapper Sarkodie during an interview on Showtym with Andy Dosty on Adom TV over the weekend.

The source of the dispute, according to Samini, stems from gross disrespect exhibited by Sarkodie.

According to Samini, he had sought Sarkodie’s collaboration for a song and received assurances from the rapper.

However, when the time came for Sarkodie to deliver the promised verse, he failed to do so, leaving Samini deeply disappointed.

“I asked you [Sarkodie] for a song, and you asked if it’s a single or album or an EP. He asked me when I am releasing, and I said mid-June or July… he listened to the song and never sent his verse” Samini recounted.

The dancehall musician said the conduct of his colleague came as a shock since he takes just 24 hours to deliver a verse to Sarkodie.

“If you read and don’t reply, it means you don’t respect me. It pained me because I don’t take 24 hours to do his songs. Two other times, I did all his songs. Since we have known each other, I always come through for him. He left me the blue tick that is why we are not cool. I cannot play God, but we move,” he lamented.

A livid Samini said the only way he will reconcile with rapper is when he [Sarkodie] shows remorse.

“Remorse plays an important role in these things,” Samini added, leaving room for future reconciliation with Sarkodie.

Mr Logic sends strong message to Sarkodie over Samini https://www.adomonline.com/mr-logic-sends-strong-message-to-sarkodie-over-samini/ Wed, 25 Jan 2023 12:20:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2208678 Artiste manager and musician, Emmanuel Barnes, popularly known as Mr Logic, has waded in the ongoing Sarkodie-Samini brouhaha on social media.

Taking to his Facebook page, Mr Logic advised Sarkodie to change his ways if what Samini said about him is true.

According to him, it has become the norm that many industry players who want to collaborate with him are criticising him for delay with verses.

He wrote: “If what Samini said about Obidi is the truth then Sark you for change. Complaint about your attitude towards some colleagues is overflowing now. 3NY3 menua, support is key.”

Earlier, Samini took to Twitter to disclose how Sarkodie failed to honour a feature they were working on. According to him, subsequent messages to connect to Sarkodie proved futile after the latter “blue-ticked” him many times without responding to his text messages.

Reacting to Samini’s claims on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz show, Sarkodie apologised to Samini, adding that, “I don’t entirely believe everything he said was true, but I am sorry.”

Sarkodie once said he wanted to be like me, later denied he’s not a fan – Samini [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/sarkodie-once-said-he-wanted-to-be-like-me-later-denied-hes-not-a-fan-samini-video/ Tue, 24 Jan 2023 23:50:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2208462 Reggae and dancehall artiste, Emmanuel Andrews Sammini, popularly known as Samini, has expressed his displeasure with rapper Sarkodie for reportedly ignoring his proposals to collaborate.

According to Samini, Sarkodie has been ungrateful after everything he supposedly did for him.

He explained that Sarkodie was looking up to him [Samini] when he came into the music industry.

Speaking on HitzFM DayBreakHitz with Andy Dostry, the dancehall artiste said Sarkodie once rapped about wanting to be like him but later denied being a fan.

“Sark you didn’t force for me, you are there [in the studio] and listening, you didn’t force for me. You are my small boy and you know that.

“Sark was the first guy that rapped and said he wants to blow and become like Samini in one of his very first tracks.

“Later on, he went on radio and said he is not a Samini fan so he doesn’t really listen to my songs. Same guy that said in his earlier freestyle that he wants to be like Samini,” the dancehall artiste said.

Samini’s frustration comes when a fan on Twitter asked when they should expect another collaboration with Sarkodie.

However, he said he is not interested in collaborating with the rapper.

“Not sure I’ll need a verse from Sark but if he ever does need one I’m not interested and that’s facts. He knows this himself.. )y3 Alo sometimes and I don’t play that.”

On his page on Twitter, he said the ‘No Pressure’ crooner’s supposed reluctance to give a concrete response to requests for features affected his 2021 Burning EP.

“Yes or no be problem for am so e go slow you and your project go dull …, he did it to me on burning EP,” he replied.

But speaking on Hitz FM on Tuesday, Sarkodie insisted that utterances must have come from a “certain place” for which reason he would need more details.

“Him feeling like that, I don’t have any control over that. I can only say sorry about how he feels. Not necessarily because I agree with everything he is saying,” Sarkodie said.

Sarkodie, however, indicated that he does not agree with the rationale behind his accusations. He said that there are many reasons why instances like these occur.

Per his clarification, he is sometimes hesitant to do certain features “not because the music is not good”, but “you can hear a song that is so good but maybe you don’t hear yourself and then you’re trying to find a pocket in the song and then one day you do it.”

“There are some songs when they sent it to you, it’s like two seconds. Maybe probably, if I send you a song and you loved it in the moment, you did it. I didn’t figure it out and I’m not talking about him, it could happen,” he said.
