Joyce, a trader in Kasoa in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region, hailed from Akyem Ayirebi in the Akyem Mansah District of the Eastern Region.

According to Adom News, a fetish priest has been implicated in her death, during which he allegedly removed body parts for ritual purposes. Family members revealed that Joyce had visited the priest seeking healing.

Kweku Yeboah, a relative, stated that several months ago, “juju” was planted in front of Joyce’s store, causing an injury to her leg. She was later treated and healed by another fetish priest, Okomfo Hlolary.

In an interview with Adom News, Kweku Yeboah recounted that the suspect claimed to have been possessed after his brother gave him a human hand while they followed Joyce into the bush for herbal treatment. According to the account, the suspect then allegedly pulled out a cutlass and beheaded Joyce.

Kweku Yeboah further stated that the suspect confessed to burying Joyce’s head at his grandfather’s home in the Volta Region. Police are preparing to travel to Joyce’s hometown to exhume her head and remaining body parts.

Meanwhile, Joyce’s mother and sister, visibly distraught, spoke to Adom News, struggling to contain their grief.

Late Samuel Aboagye’s family seeks DNA test for daughter https://www.adomonline.com/late-samuel-aboagyes-family-seeks-dna-test-for-daughter/ Wed, 12 Nov 2025 10:47:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2598998 The family of the late Samuel Aboagye, former Deputy National Director of NADMO and ex-NDC parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East, is calling for a DNA test to confirm the paternity of his three-year-old daughter.

The Bretua family of Adansi Kwapia has petitioned the Obuasi Magistrate Court, requesting that the late Aboagye’s widow present the child for testing.

The demand follows reports that the widow has refused to comply with earlier requests, which the family says has raised doubts about the girl’s parentage.

Speaking to Adom News, Nana Kwabena Gyamra Yiakwan, Adansikwapiahene and spokesperson for the Bretua family, said the late Aboagye had expressed concerns about the child’s paternity years before his death.

“The late Samuel Aboagye expressed concerns about the child’s parentage long before his death. Since he passed away, the wife has repeatedly declined DNA testing. We simply want the truth, and a DNA test is the only way to confirm it,” Nana Kwabena Gyamra Yiakwan said.

The family added that the issue gained urgency following the helicopter crash that claimed Mr. Aboagye’s life, noting that DNA testing was crucial in confirming victims’ identities.

They insist that testing is the only reliable method to resolve the matter and clarify the true identity of the late deputy’s daughter.

Aboagye was aboard the ill-fated Z-9 Air Force helicopter that crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District on August 6, 2025, a tragedy that plunged the nation into mourning.

The crash claimed the lives of eight distinguished Ghanaians, including Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence; Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology; Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate; Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manean Twum-Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Jota’s family expected to attend Anfield tribute https://www.adomonline.com/jotas-family-expected-to-attend-anfield-tribute/ Fri, 15 Aug 2025 08:42:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2567443 Diogo Jota’s family are expected to be at Anfield on Friday for Liverpool’s opening Premier League game against Bournemouth.

The league champions are planning to pay tribute to their former forward, who died at the age of 28 in a car crash in northern Spain last month alongside his brother Andre Silva, who was 25.

A moment of silence will be held at all Premier League matches this weekend, with players wearing black armbands, while messages and images will be shown on the big screens in stadiums.

Liverpool confirmed there will also be a fan-led tribute at Anfield, with a special mosaic unveiled in the Kop and the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand during the period of silence.

In his programme notes for Friday’s game, Liverpool manager Arne Slot says: “We know that this will be a very emotional occasion, given it is the first league game we have played since we lost Diogo and Andre.

“As I have said previously, the tributes that have been paid throughout the football world, and especially within the LFC community, have been truly special, and I know that tonight we will come together to honour them once more.

“I believe that Diogo’s wife, his children and his family will be in attendance and it is important that, as a club, we show that they will always have our love and support as they deal with this most tragic of situations. We are there for them always.”

The Liverpool players will display their own tribute with a ‘Forever 20’ emblem printed on their shirts and stadium jackets. This will remain in place for the season.

The club earned a record-equalling 20th English league title last season with Jota wearing the number 20 shirt, which the club decided to retire after consulting with the former Portugal international’s wife Rute Cardoso and other members of Jota’s family.

Wolves – the other Premier League team Jota played for – also have tributes planned for their season opener at home to Manchester City on Saturday.

Family seeks justice after alleged assault of student by teacher in Sehwi Asawinso https://www.adomonline.com/family-seeks-justice-after-alleged-assault-of-student-by-teacher-in-sehwi-asawinso/ Tue, 13 Aug 2024 18:50:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2433418 The family of a 19-year-old final-year student of St Andrews Senior High School in Sehwi Asawinso in the Western North Region, is demanding justice following an alleged assault by two teachers.

Videos circulating on social media show the student with multiple welts on his back, raising concerns about the nature and cause of the injuries.

According to an uncle of the victim, the student was treated and discharged from the SDA Clinic at Sehwi Asawinso after being rushed there by his classmates.

However, the exact circumstances leading to the alleged assault remain unclear.

“The child went for classes this morning and after the classes, he wanted to get something to eat. He met his teacher who said his hair was bushy. His teacher just held him by his uniform and used the cane on him. I saw the child and asked him if he provoked him but he said no.

“The child is a very humble child. He cooks for his father. They operate a chop bar in the village. He is not known to be somebody who is abusive. It’s serious. The child did not provoke them. It’s about the hair,” his uncle said.

Efforts to reach the school administration for a statement have been unsuccessful as the headmaster declined to comment when contacted.

However, a physician assistant at the SDA Clinic, Lucy Aboagye, confirmed the incident to JoyNews.

“He reported here this morning and there was evidence. There were marks on his skin that show that indeed he was beaten.”

I lived in the UK from age 11 to 14 – Medikal reveals https://www.adomonline.com/i-lived-in-the-uk-from-age-11-to-14-medikal-reveals/ Fri, 24 May 2024 03:11:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2399255 Rapper Medikal has shed light on his surprising background, revealing that he lived and attended school in the UK from ages 11 to 14.

This revelation came as a shock to many fans and panellists on the 3Music show, as Medikal is known for seamlessly switching between Ghanaian and UK accents in his music.

Medikal explained that his parents separated during his time in the UK, leading him to make the decision to return to Ghana with his mother.

According to him, this marked the beginning of his life in Sowutuom, a suburb of Accra.

Despite his return to Ghana, Medikal maintains strong ties to the UK, where he still has family members.

“People don’t know I lived in Brixton from age 11 to 14 before I came down. My mom and dad divorced and I chose my mom’s side, and we went through some or twos. Before Sowutuom, it was Brixton. Why would I mimic the accent? I have family there,” Medikal explained, addressing misconceptions about his accent.

Interestingly, the panellists expressed their surprise at this revelation, but Medikal, who recently sold out the O2 Indigo arena in London, believed it was already common knowledge.

Hailing from a lineage steeped in musical prowess, Akwaboah’s musical lineage traces back to Akwaboah Jnr’s grandfather, a distinguished musician, and further extends to his father, Akwaboah Snr, who achieved legendary status in Ghana’s music scene.

When asked about the possibility of his own children following in their footsteps, Akwaboah Jnr responded affirmatively, expressing a willingness to embrace whatever path his children choose.

The Lighthouse album curator emphasized his commitment to allow his children the freedom to carve out their destinies.

In a conversation with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, Akwaboah Jnr said “I would allow my children to choose their own path to freedom and destiny.”

The father of two said his nine-year-old boy is showing a keen interest in music.

“The boy is really following… I would not say I have failed if they don’t follow my path. If they choose, or if God says this is what they have to do, I don’t have anything to say,” he stated.

In a recent interview with Graphic Showbiz, ‘The Things We Do For Love’ actor said, “I have always wanted to have two and my wife wants to have three children so if we have one or two more, it will be great, but we are content with what we have.”

Adjetey Anang and wife, Elom had their first baby seven years after marriage. He mentioned that it was “one of the most trying times of their marriage and waiting period as Christians.”

“So it was a combination of feelings, there were times when there was so much hope and there were other times you would ask yourself what is it that you are doing wrong as Christians.

“There were times when we were invited for outdoorings and other times when people will see you and say, we are praying for you. All of that was not easy at all for us.

“There was a lot of pressure on us and it was very tough but we kept hoping and hoping and here we are today.”

After all the bashing he has received for admitting in his memoir that he cheated on his wife, one would have thought the award-winning actor would delete that bit given another opportunity, but he says, “No, I won’t change a thing at all, I will leave it as it is. That is what it is supposed to be for someone in the limelight. There is an element of vulnerability and sincerity that is expected of you for them to relate.”

Family of Krachi East MCE breaks silence on his death https://www.adomonline.com/family-of-krachi-east-mce-breaks-silence-on-his-death/ Tue, 06 Sep 2022 15:18:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2159359 The family of the late Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Krachi East, Francis Kofi Okesu, has blamed the media for diverse ‘unethical’ reports on his demise.

The family believes reports on the circumstances leading to his death are aimed at discrediting the reputation of the late MCE who they said served the people with respect and diligence.

In a press statement by the family in conjunction with other stakeholders including the personal assistants to the late MCE and the Oti Regional Minister, they asked the public to disregard what they say is “cooked stories” from the media.

The family defends that the late MCE was a devoted Christian, diligent and sober.

They believe the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Health Service would conduct independent investigation and publish an autopsy to unravel the true cause of his demise.

The statement is coming hours after the late MCE was found dead in a Kumasi hotel after he checked into the facility on September 2.

Reports indicate that all efforts by his Personal assistant and the hotel management to reach him proved futile, forcing them to break into his room.

He was found unconscious with no visible injuries or marks of violence.

Meanwhile, Police have assured investigations are ongoing.

Family of man stoned to death by ‘mentally challenged’ woman at Circle speaks https://www.adomonline.com/family-of-man-stoned-to-death-by-mentally-challenged-woman-at-circle-speaks/ Thu, 04 Aug 2022 18:03:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2144948

The family of a young man, believed to be in his 20s, who was killed by a suspected mentally challenged woman at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, has broken it’s silence.

According to them, they are still in shock and yet to come to terms with his sudden demise.

They explained he left the village for Accra on Monday, August 1, to seek for greener pastures and cannot fathom how he could die the same day.

The said woman, according to eyewitnesses, had been terrorising pedestrians and drivers since the early hours of Monday at the overhead near the trotro stations.

She was said to have smashed the windscreens of four moving cars on the road and wounded several persons and eventually smashed the skull of the man, leading to his instant death.

An uncle of the deceased, who spoke to Adom News, said they went to the mortuary to identify the body following a distress call from a friend.

“He was a truant and always told us he wanted to be a driver’s mate but we felt he was too young and restrained him. But at a point, he accompanied his mum to Circle to sell and we believe that helped him find his way here on our blind side only for us to hear about his death,” the uncle narrated.

Six-year-old girl, parents shot dead while camping https://www.adomonline.com/six-year-old-girl-parents-shot-dead-while-camping/ Mon, 25 Jul 2022 12:59:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2141600 A six-year-old girl and her parents have been shot dead while camping in the US state of Iowa, police have said.

The bodies of Sarah and Tyler Schmidt, both 42, and their daughter Lula were found in their tent in the Maquoketa Caves State Park.

The couple’s nine-year-old son survived the attack, a neighbour said.

Police believe the suspected shooter, a 23-year-old man, then turned the gun on himself. His body was also found in the park.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and the Maquoketa Caves State Park is an active crime scene, a statement from Mitch Mortvedt, Assistant Director of the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation, said.

Mr Mortvedt told local newspaper, The Des Moines Register, that there had been no reports of an earlier altercation between the suspect and victims.

The suspected shooter has been named as Anthony Orlando Sherwin, who was also staying at the campsite.

The victims’ bodies were found on Friday morning, and emergency services were called at 06:23 local time (12:23 BST).

The park was evacuated, and Sherwin, known to be armed, was found to be missing. Following an air search, his body was found in the park, some way from the campsite.

The Schmidts were from Cedar Falls, also in Iowa, which has been rocked by the news.

Cedar Falls mayor Rob Green wrote in a Facebook post that just this week he had been working with Sarah Schmidt, who worked at the local library, on a project.

“Like many of you just hearing the news, I’m devastated,” he said.

“I knew Sarah well, and she and her family were regular walkers here in the Sartori Park neighbourhood.”

Mr Green’s post received many comments expressing shock and grief, as well as sympathy for the surviving child.

A GoFundMe page set up to help the nine-year-old had raised almost $150,000 (£125,000) by Sunday evening.

The page organiser said she was Ms Schmidt’s cousin, and that the boy was “surrounded by family and friends who are supporting him as best we can”.

Local officials said autopsies would be carried out on all four of the bodies over the weekend.

The park is expected to be closed until at least Thursday.

Kayla Lyon, Director of Iowa Department of Natural Resources, said the “long-standing tradition of enjoying Iowa’s natural wonders” had been shaken, but would continue.

When I was 15, my mum cheated with my then-boyfriend – she was 38 at the time and I thought she was in a happy marriage.’

As you’d imagine, it was horrible and a real shock.

Later, when I was married with a young child, I believed my twin sister was sleeping with my husband. Now, more than 20 years later, I’m in the middle of a difficult divorce and I feel so emotionally scarred by what’s gone on.

I’m in a new relationship, but, given my past history, I’m concerned about how I’ll be able to cope emotionally.

I hope you can help.

Coleen Nolan is the Mirror's resident agony aunt

Coleen says

Being in the middle of a painful divorce is bound to rake up difficult memories and emotions from past relationships, and you’re going to feel very vulnerable.

So, with that in mind, I think it’s wise to take this new relationship very slowly and don’t try to run before you can walk.

If your partner loves you, he’ll understand that you’re coping with a lot of emotional baggage and will be happy to go at your pace.

Focus on getting through the divorce before making decisions with this new relationship.

In terms of dealing with the emotional scarring, I really believe it would help to have counselling.

Not only to help you navigate the divorce but to work through what happened with your mum and your sister.

If you’ve never really talked about these betrayals, it would help to do so, so you can approach your new relationship feeling stronger and more positive. Good luck.

Family of Asem Asa accident victim that claimed 14 lives chases police for body [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/family-of-asem-asa-accident-victim-that-claimed-14-lives-chases-police-for-body-listen/ Tue, 12 Apr 2022 10:34:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2103598

Family members of one of the victims of Asem Asa accident in the Western Region have expressed concerns over the body of their relative.

According to them, the police are refusing to hand over the charred body of their relative despite completing all necessary procedures.

Speaking exclusively on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show three weeks after the unfortunate incident, a disgruntled family member, Enyam Djah, said the family is saddened about the latest development as they are unable to go ahead with the planned burial.

According to him, the police have refused to release the body to them for the reason that they are to complete a DNA test on all the female bodies before they are released to families.

A development, Mr Djah said is a waste of time, adding the family is running out of patience as they have been able to identify their relative who happens to be his brother.

“The argument of the Police is that it is more of law than the emotions we are attaching to the issue. They are saying that until all families identify their bodies, they are not releasing any of the bodies and so we agreed with them. So we gave them a week in which all-male bodies were identified so that should be enough for the release of the bodies.

“But again, they are also making another argument that once a DNA test is being carried on the female bodies, there is no way they can release any of the bodies,” he said.

Mr Djah said the position of the deceased in the family is very important and that as long as he remains at the morgue, it withholds every activity and they will continue to be in pain.

“We cannot stretch the pain too long. The early burial will ease the pain of the family and so we feel the body is released to us as soon as possible because we have fixed the date for the funeral for 23rd April 2022 and we had even wanted to convey the body to Volta,” he added.

Mr Djah said his brother, 48, was into mechanical engineering and he was going to supervise work at Swedru when he died in the accident

To him, the family believes the accident was such a mysterious one, adding that his death cannot be natural but will not speak further on the matter.

He said if they are unable to go through the processes to get the body, they may have to postpone the funeral.

Some 14 passengers on the Accra-bound vehicle were burnt to death at Asem Asa in the Western Region.

Eyewitnesses narrated that a tipper truck did a wrong overtaking.

Upon realising the careless driving on the part of his counterpart, the driver of the Ford vehicle stopped to make way for the truck.

But the truck’s driver lost control of his vehicle as a result of a tyre burst during the process, fell on the Ford and caught fire.

A 65-year-old mother and her 38-year-old son have been electrocuted to death after their house submerged in floodwater at Kasoa Old Barrier in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality in the Greater Accra Region.

Reports filed by Adom News‘ Kofi Adjei revealed that about 50 houses were also flooded following a downpour in the area.

A witness said the woman and her son were clearing the water out of their house with a pumping machine when the incident happened.

The witness explained the mother fell into the floodwater and the son, who did not know she had been electrocuted, run through the water in an attempt to save her but also died.

Some irate residents, who also spoke to Adom News, blamed authorities in the municipality for the incident, stating there are no gutters in the area for the water to pass when it rains.

Soldier, wife and child killed in horror car crash near military base https://www.adomonline.com/soldier-wife-and-child-killed-in-horror-car-crash-near-military-base/ Mon, 08 Nov 2021 16:32:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2040405 A soldier and his wife, and child died in a horror smash with a tow truck near a military base, according to reports.

Army Spc. Luis Taveras, 27, his wife Lisbeth, 30, and their 16-month-old son Luis, were all said to have been killed when their vehicle collided with a tow truck at about 11:00 pm last Monday.

The crash happened in Pyeongtaek, near Camp Humphreys, South Korea, at an overseas US military base.

According to reports, the soldier from Massachusetts had served in the Army for four years and was a quartermaster and chemical equipment repairer with the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command.

He arrived in South Korea in June.

Stars and Stripes reports that investigators believe the car, with the family inside, hit a tow truck at a curve on a single lane road before a fire broke out.

The family was pronounced dead at the scene.

Brig. Gen. Steven Allen, the unit’s commander told the publication in a statement on Wednesday: “No words can accurately express the pain their friends and family are having to confront.

“We will, as an Army team, move forward in a manner that provides support and assistance to those grieving.”

The driver of the truck, said to be a 27-year-old Korean man, was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a nearby hospital.

Both the Korean National Police Agency and the military are currently investigating the crash.

Founded in 1964 the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command is headquartered in Daegu and consists of about 5,600 personnel.

They provide support to all US troops currently stationed in the Republic of Korea.

There are about 28,500 American troops stationed in South Korea, the United States’ third-largest military presence outside its country after Japan and Germany, according to data from the U.S. Defence Manpower Data Centre.

US Forces Korea (USFK) operates about 90 combat planes, 40 attack helicopters, 50 tanks and some 60 Patriot missile launchers, according to South Korea’s Defence White Paper issued in December.

USFK data showed it had about 19,500 Army soldiers, 7,800 airmen and women, 350 Navy sailors and 120 Marines stationed in South Korea.

Couple, two daughters die in accident on their way to funeral https://www.adomonline.com/couple-two-daughters-die-in-accident-on-their-way-to-funeral/ Wed, 03 Nov 2021 12:21:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2037986 Four family members on Monday perished in a road accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, Kenya while heading for the burial of their kin in Nakuru.

William Kamau, his wife Jane Njoki, their two daughters Rhoda Njeri and Evelyn Waithira died after the car they were travelling in was involved in a grisly road accident at Njira ya Ngenia near Limuru in Kiambu county.

The four, who hail from Gaturi in Kiharu, Murang’a county, were heading to Nakuru for the burial of their in-law.

According to Anthony Gichaga, a family member, the rest of the family members had already arrived in Nakuru for the burial and were waiting for the four to join them.

Gichatha said they were in constant communication with their parents and the sisters along the journey until his phone call to his father was answered by a police officer at the scene of the accident who told them to report to Tigoni Police Station.

“The rest of the family were already at the burial and the service was underway when we received the tragic news. Some of us were forced to rush back,” Gichatha said.

“We were told they were involved in an accident but we came to learn that they have passed on arrival at the hospital,” he said.

Gichatha said their cousin, who was in the vehicle, survived the accident and is undergoing treatment in hospital.

Gichatha, who is a son to the deceased, said they are yet to understand what exactly transpired and want thorough investigations done.

“I would, however, urge drivers to be more careful on the road to avert such accidents. Losing four family members is very devastating,” he said.

Macharia Gichatha, brother to Kamau, said the deaths of their loved ones have overwhelmed and thrown them into confusion.

“We even don’t know where to start in preparing the burial of four family members but with the support from friends we shall manage,” he said.

Gichatha emphasised the need for drivers to be careful while driving to avert such accidents.

They perished within minutes of each other after going for a sauna following their arrival at the luxury Gloria Palace Hotel.

Cops are reported to be examining whether the ventilating system in the sauna was functioning properly.

Pictures show the family Katya and her parents were keen travellers but for now mystery surrounds their sudden deaths on their latest trip.

They had ordered drinks and food to the sauna complex but by the time a waiter delivered it, they were all dead.

“I shouted several times that the drinks and the fruit were ready,” the hotel employee was quoted as saying by the Albanian media.

“No-one answered, so I walked inside the sauna and saw them all.

“One person was lying on a sun bed, two were on the (sauna) benches.

Sergey Burenkov, 60, and daughter Katya Burenkova

“The last one was sitting down with his legs in the pool.

‘They have all suffocated.”

The Russian embassy in Tirana was probing the cause of death, said a Russian diplomatic source.

“[They are] investigating the circumstances,” a source told TASS.

An Albanian police statement said: “At around 22:20 in Qerret, Kavaja the dead bodies of four people with Russian nationality were found in a sauna.

“All of them had been asphyxiated.”

A source said: “They had only arrived at the hotel an hour before the tragedy.”

Reports said the hotel’s entire staff had been questioned in a resort some 30 miles west of capital Tirana.

Investigations were underway to determine whether there was a technical failure of the sauna ventilation system, or inadequate care of the tourists by the hotel staff.

Alcohol consumption by the victims was also being examined, it was reported.

Full speech: Kaaka’s family reacts to Ejura committee report https://www.adomonline.com/full-speech-kaakas-family-reacts-to-ejura-committee-report/ Mon, 04 Oct 2021 13:10:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2023837 Press Statement of the Family of Ibrahim ‘Kaaka’ Mohammed in Relation to the
Report of the Ministerial Committee on the Ejura Killings
Monday, 04 October 2021

Introduction:

  1. Members of the Press, on behalf of the wider Kaaka family and the people of Ejura,
thank you for coming for today’s press event.
  2. We are grateful that you continue to find it proper to shine your cameras on the plight
  3. of an unknown poor family from the middle of nowhere. A family of illiterates, who
have neither gold, fame nor the political connections that one needs to secure justice
in the version of democracy we practice.
  4. But for your interest in our case, our continuous cry for justice, would have been heard
by only the walls that surround our modest family home in Ejura.
  5. As you are aware, we have invited you here to share with you, formally this time, our
thoughts on the Report of the Ministerial Committee that was set up to look into the
    Ejura killings.
  6. Naturally, we are saddened that over 90 days after the Ejura incidents, it had to take a
freedom of information request from us, and the families of the victims of the Ejura
killings to compel the Government to release this report into the public domain for
    discussion.
  7. For us, the delay in releasing the report does not reflect any sense of urgency or
commitment to bringing justice to the people of Ejura. We think that the delay is
definitely inconsistent with the demands of our laws and with what our democracy
    requires.
  8. Over the past week, we have taken time as a family to read and discuss the Committee’s
report internally. We have sought the counsel of our lawyers, of our religious advisors,
friends and well-meaning sympathizers. We have conferred with the people of Ejura
and we have sat down with the families of the victims of the military brutalities in
Ejura. We have listened to those who have criticized the report and those who have
praised it. We have taken in stride the voices of those who spew hate against our
families, and we have even prayed for those whose hate and violent threats against us
have now become emboldened by this Report.
  9. Most importantly, we have kept faith with Allah, in whom we have sought comfort; and
    we have trusted his wisdom.
  10. Today, we speak out again, because we continue to trust Allah’s promise that the moral
arc of the universe always bends towards justice; no matter how long it takes.
  11. In this press conference, we will be addressing two issues that have become the focus
of the media attention since the report was released.
  12. First, we will address the supposed findings of the Committee regarding the murder of
our son, husband and father Kaaka. And secondly, we will share with you the set of
actions we will be taking going forward, after this Report.
The Comments of the Kaaka Family on the Report of the Committee
  13. Regarding the first issue; as you would recall, the Committee stated in its report, and I
quote; that (1) “We, accordingly, find that, the death of “Kaaka” was not directly linked
to his social media activism”. (2) It is more probably a family feud”
  14. As you are aware, ever since the release of the report, several prominent and credible
people in our society have been baffled as to how the Committee could have arrived at
this conclusion. We thank the several of them who spoken up and criticized the obvious
absurdity and bizarre nature of this finding. We are grateful that they have shown
clearly how the Committee impoverished its own Report and diminished their own
credibility by amplifying propaganda and hatred for no discernible reason.
  15. We will like to use this opportunity to state in clear and unambiguous terms, that the
statement by the Committee that Kaaka was probably killed because of a family feud is
obviously false, careless made, and very clearly disgraceful.
  16. Their statement was made without regard for the pain of the family; and could only
have been made by persons who were so eager to please their appointing authority that
they left their humanity and their conscience aside.
  17. Even though they knew that they had no basis, evidence or authority for that statement,
they made it anyway! Perhaps because, why bother about truth and justice for a poor
family in Ejura, when you can do the bidding of those who have promised you; and
have the power to guarantee you further political appointments.
  18. So yes, we have struggled as to why persons of their calibre will be so willing to forsake
their own credibility just to do a hatchet job, in expectation of political favours.
  19. But we leave them to the judgement of their conscience and to the weightier justice of
    Allah.
  20. As a family, we consider it necessary however that we walk the public through the facts;
and to demonstrate to you why the Report and the supposed findings of the Committee
are untrue, horribly careless and insensitive.
    The Mandate of the Committee
  21. First, it is important that we remind ourselves that the Ejura Committee, by their own
admission, had no mandate to investigate the death of Kaaka. They had no mandate to
establish who killed him or why Kaaka was killed. We as a Family understood that and
we made our peace with that. We say this, not because we do not want the truth of who
killed Kaaka to be officially established. But because, we want the persons connected
to his death, properly, carefully, and justifiably established. That is what justice means
    to us.
  22. If you remember, when the Committee was first set up, our family decided not to
appear before the Committee. We took the trouble to communicate our reasons in a
letter to the Minister of Interior and to the Committee.
  23. As we told them, the reason why we decided not to appear before the committee was
because we were concerned that the Committee was consistently departing from its
clear mandate to investigate the circumstances under which our military went into
Ejura and shot live bullets into a crowd, killing civilians and maiming several others.
We were concerned that their work had become very unfocused and was all over the
    place.
  24. In the letter, we stated that,
    a. We were concerned about the continuous encroachment of the Committee into
questions which, as we understood, were the object of a separate and
    concurrent criminal investigation.
    b. We were doubtful of the prudence in the Committee’s decision to extend its
inquiry into questions which the Ghana Police Service had publicly claimed
were part of its investigation into the brutal murder of our son, husband and
    father, Ibrahim ‘Kaaka’ Mohammed.
    c. We reiterated our concern that the Committee was receiving testimony from
persons who could potentially be called to testify in the criminal trial relating
to the murder of Kaaka, or in the subsequent criminal trial of the individuals
who are criminally culpable of the shooting of unarmed civilians and children
    in Ejura.
    d. We noted in particular the failure of the Committee to advise witnesses of their
constitutional right against self-incrimination; of their right to be attend the
hearings with the assistance of counsel; and failing to advise them that nothing
they say before the Committee was privileged and that all could be adduced
against them in a criminal trial.
  25. After the Chiefs and Elders of Ejura summoned the family and rebuked us for our
decision not to participate in the hearings, we felt compelled to appear before the
Committee. We did so largely against our will, but in the hope that those families who
had lost their loved ones and seen theirs injured, will feel more confident in appearing
before the Committee. It was after-all because of them that the Committee had been
    created.
  26. Yet, even when she appeared before the Committee, Sahada Hudu, Kaaka’s widow, was
the only person who took the trouble to ask the Committee to clarify its mandate. At
no point previously, had the committee taken the trouble to clarify its mandate to the
    witnesses who appeared before it.
  27. In response to Sahada, the Committee made it clear that, they had no business looking
into the death of Kaaka. They admitted on camera, unequivocally, that because the
matter was under investigation by the Police, it would be improper for them to
    intervene on those issues.
  28. Despite all this, the Committee still went ahead and made 40% of their findings about
the murder investigations into the death of Kaaka. They also made statements that
even common sense would have told them was improper. By so doing, they clearly
prejudiced the criminal investigations into Kaaka’s murder.
Finding That Kaaka’s murder had nothing to do with his social media activism.
  29. One of the things we have baffled by is that, even when they made pronouncements on
the issues outside their mandate, the Committee was also selective about the kind of
evidence it wanted to rely on and what it wanted to believe. All for no justifiable reason.
With a single stroke of a pen, and without any independent investigation of their own
to disprove or add weight to any testimony, they decided to choose which testimony
they wanted to believe and which ones they wanted to discount.
  30. So, for instance, according to the Committee, they decided that Sahada’s hour-long
testimony that her husband confided in her on several occasions, that there were
threats against his life in connection with his social media activism, was pure
speculation. In reaching that conclusion, the Committee said that this was because
Sahada had not reported those threats to the police; and had not told the police about
    the identity of the individuals.
  31. What is curious about that conclusion is that, during the hearings, at no point did the
Committee ask Sahada, whether she had reported those threats and the identity of the
persons concerned to the Police. When you watch the recording of the hearing, at the
31st minute of her appearance before the Committee, Ms Juliet Adime Amoah, a
member of the Committee asks Sahada to confirm that she knows the identities of the
individuals who were threatening her husband. After Sahada confirmed that she did,
the same member of the Committee advised Sahada to go ahead and report the names
of the individuals to the Police. Ms Amoah, the Committee member offered this advice
without inquiring at any point whether Sahada had already made a statement to the
Police regarding these issues. In fact, at the time of her appearance before the
Committee, Sahada had already made a statement to the same effect to the Police. This
the committee could have easily verified this information as they had access to the
    police docket on Kaaka.
  32. Further, the Committee suggested that videos submitted to them by a certain
Abeewakas, did not contain threats to Kaaka’s life and that the videos appeared after
Kaaka’s death. They claimed that for these reasons, they doubted the authenticity of
the videos and considered that this allowed them to state categorically that
“accordingly, find that, the death of “Kaaka” was not directly linked to his social media
activism”. This was the only basis of their conclusion.
  33. What is curious is that a Committee which was sold to the public as a fact finding
committee made no attempt to actually find out any facts of its own. Even though they
received several witness statements that made reference to Kaaka’s role as a social
media activist, they did not even try to take a look at Kaaka’s social media activism.
How was it possible for the Committee to make 40% of your findings about the death
of a social media activist, and yet not even take the trouble to google the individual or
go through his social media feed? Surely, this is not only embarrassing but discredits
the Report and whatever conclusions they reached concerning the murder of Kaaka.
  34. Had the Committee been taken the trouble to independently look into Kaaka’s social
media activity, they would have confirmed for themselves, several videos that are still
up on Kaaka’s facebook page; where he himself recorded various individuals and
mentioned the names of persons threatening him. Had they done so, they would have
confirmed for themselves that all these videos were mostly live streams made on
facebook; and not edited videos or videos capable of being tempered with.
  35. Who investigates the killing of a social media activist without even logging on to social
    media? Not even once?
  36. It is not surprising that so many people have found the findings of the Committee to
be porous. Even as the Committee has sought to couch their weak and baseless
evidence in exaggerated language; many have seen through it; and are now convinced
that their language did little to cover up the depth of their shoddy job.
The Finding that Kaaka’s death was a result of a Family Feud
  37. The Final Thing I want to address, is this bizarre claim by the Committee that Kaaka’s
murder was most probably because of a family feud.
  38. Unfortunately, the Committee decided to stretch absurdity even further, by saying that,
the killing of Kaaka was most probably because of a family feud.
  39. Now, one would expect that, because of the gravity of that conclusion and its possible
repercussions, in terms of the public interest in this matter, and its effect on the
ongoing criminal inquiry into Kaaka’s death, the Committee would have taken time to
demonstrate clearly, and based sound logic, how it arrived at that weighty conclusion.
  40. Yet again, the Committee failed at this. Their careless regard for the family of Kaaka
was evident in that conclusion; and has now been confirmed in their subsequent
    statements in the Press.
  41. As you are aware, Vladimir Antwi-Danso has gone on to say publicly that we the Kaaka
family have no right to question the work of the Committee. In his own words, he said
“they do not have the right to question us because they did not send us.”
  42. Obviously, if accept his logic, it would mean that the Committee saw itself as only
accountable to the persons who set them up; and not to the families of the victims or
the persons directed affected by the incidents in Ejura; or even the Ghanaian public.
We think that this is unacceptable.
  43. At nowhere in the entire report of the Committee, did they demonstrate or was there
any evidence to show that the family of Kaaka was embroiled in any turmoil or feud.
  44. In fact, in reaching their conclusion, they relied wholesale on the testimony of one
Aminu Mohammed, an individual who they chose to hear behind closed doors, even
though this individual had previously repeated some of these discredited statements
on facebook, prior to meeting the committee. Clearly, this was somebody whose
testimony was intended as a wow factor, and so was deliberately shielded from broader
public scrutiny. Yet, this was the only evidence the Committee cited as confirming their
conclusion that Kaaka was killed because of a family feud.
  45. In so doing, the Committee failed to subject the testimony of this individual, who they
described as a friend of Kaaka and a resident of Ejura, to even the most basic scrutiny.
  46. For instance, by the account of the testimony that the Committee itself summarized,
the individual was not even a resident of Ejura but a person who lived in Burkina Faso.
Secondly, the said individual whose version they decided to swallow hook, line and
sinker, was not even in Ejura when Kaaka was killed, or at the time the Ejura killings
    occurred.
  47. In addition, this individual had not been in touch with Kaaka for at least the past 10
years. Kaaka and the said individual had become estranged sometime after Kaaka got
    married to Sahada.
  48. Further, the Committee failed to subject the person’s testimony to any scrutiny
whatsoever. For instance, as proof that there was bad blood between Kaaka and Iddi,
the individual claimed, that Kaaka had caused the arrest of Iddi sometime in 2020.
According to this individual,Iddi had been kept in the Ejura Police Cells for about three
days at the instance of Kaaka; and that he Aminu had advised Kaaka to leave Iddi in
the cells for about a week to teach Iddi a lesson. The said Aminu even went on to allege
that Kaaka’s mother had paid a bribe to the Ejura police to secure the release of Iddi
after three days. He also claimed that Iddi travelled to Nigeria soon after his release.
  49. Despite its heavy reliance on this individual’s statement, at no point, did the supposed
fact-finding Committee seek to establish whether there was in fact any record of arrest
against Iddi in 2020 or attempt to cross-check with the police any of the fanciful stories
Aminu narrated to them. They did not even verify whether indeed Iddi had travelled
out of the country in 2020, as alleged by the said individual.
  50. In addition, the Committee decided to overlook the obvious absurdities in this story;
including the accusations of bribery and corruption made against the police service.
The Committee for no discernible reason chose to believe this individual. No attempts
were made to corroborate or independently establish any of the claims made by the
    said Aminu Mohammed.
  51. The Committee’s failure to perform the most basic due diligence on this story, is
baffling. The result was that the Committee became the mouthpiece of fake-news and
a senseless conspiracy theory. As a fact-finding Committee, the Koomson Committee
had one job: that was to establish facts. They failed in that task miserably.
  52. We are also disappointed that the Committee treated the testimony of another
individual, Saadia Mohammed, who accused Baba Iddi of having something to do with
the attack on his brother as “more reasonably probable”. Even though the Committee,
by its own assertion had been given access to the docket on Kaaka, they decided to
ignore the fact that this same individual given contradicting statements to the Police
regarding who she claimed to have seen on that night. They treated as irrelevant the
fact that the same individual recanted her story several times; and has in fact given
recorded interviews in which she contradicts herself severally on the same issue.
  53. Similarly, they failed to take note of the glaring inconsistencies in the testimony of
Muniratu Alhasson; and did give any regard to the fact that her story just repeats
almost entirely that of Saadia Mohammed, word for word. In addition, when
scrutinized, it is hard to not conclude that the entire statement begs further questions.
For instance, this individual claimed that she heard the sound of “Kaaka’s” motorbike.
By what magic, was this person able to identify the owner of a motorbike from its sound
only? This individual also claimed that after the motorbike arrived, she heard an
unusual sound and came to her porch to see what was happening. Yet, she did not, by
her own assertion, see anybody attack Kaaka. This was strange because even by her
narration, she would have been the first witness to the scene, because she came out
immediately when she claimed to have heard strange sounds. In addition, she claimed
that when she was making her way to the scene, she bumped into Baba Iddi, and then
shouted that “somebody” had caused the injury and was running out so people should
come and see him”. If by her own assertion, the somebody she saw was Baba Iddi, why
did she not say it there and then that the person she saw was Baba Iddi.
  54. It seems clear to us, that the Committee was only interested in believing any narrative
they found was unfavourable to the Family of Kaaka. As such, whenever they
encountered any evidence that did not conform to their made-up minds, they either
discounted it or did not even bother to solicit it. Also, whenever, they heard any account
that conformed to what they wanted to hear, they did not even bother to probe it
    further.
  55. We are disappointed that a committee charged with such an important national duty,
so shamefully failed to uphold the most basic value of impartiality, and due diligence.
  56. We are also disappointed that a committee supposedly chaired by a Justice of the Court
of Appeal failed to show the minimum level of legal awareness and a sense of judicial
restraint. Instead, the Committee completely abandoned due process and showed zero
respect for the fair trial rights of persons currently arrested in connection with the
police inquiry into the death of Kaaka. We take this as sufficient evidence of their lack
    of integrity and their insensitivity.
  57. We are now unfortunately convinced that, following the porous work conducted by the
Committee, the Attorney-General will on the authority of this commissioned hatchet
job, discontinue the prosecution of the two members of the NPP who were arrested in
connection Kaaka’s murder. We have always known this to be intention of the persons
    involved in this charade.
  58. In fact, it is common knowledge that information circulating in some quarters in the
Ejura community for the past several weeks, has been that several supporters of the
NPP in Ejura, have been assured by high level officials in their party that the AttorneyGeneral will seek to release their foot soldiers caught up in the murder inquiry.
  59. We do not take it for granted that this Committee’s report now provides the AttorneyGeneral with what he needs to go on and make his party people happy.
  60. But even if persons in positions of trust in this country persist in corrupting our laws
and pervading the course of justice for illegal and dishonest partisan ends, we remain
resolute in the belief that the truth will always win. As such, we would like to remind
everyone of the facts in this matter.
  61. The fact is that Kaaka in several of his videos talked constantly about the fact that his
life was in danger due to the threats he was receiving in connection with his activism.
  62. Kaaka also recorded his interactions with certain individuals affiliated with the NPP in
Ejura who threatened him constantly. These individuals told Kaaka that they thought
he was making their political party look bad and that his activities will affect the
electoral fortunes of the party. They claimed on the recording that they had been paid
    to warn Kaaka off.
  63. After that interaction, Kaaka recorded a video where he said that because of his online
activism, the Municipal Chief Executive sent people to warn him. He said that he had
decided to shoot that video so that his audience will see that if he gets beaten or
attacked, it is because of the anxiety of these political elements over his social media
    activism.
  64. Two of the individuals who were recorded on video for threatening Kaaka’s life are the
persons who were arrested by the Police in connection with Kaaka’s death.
  65. After, Kaaka was attacked, we found at the crime scene, the two large sticks which were
covered with blood and which were used to beat up Kaaka. These were handed over to
    the Police.
  66. Are the Police saying that, Iddi carried two clubs and alone beat up Kaaka?
  67. We also handed over Kaaka’s mobile phone to the Police. We know for fact that the
Police handling Kaaka’s phone have been operating his Whatsapp and have even exited
certain groups he was on. We consider this conduct to be deliberately interfering with
    evidence; and improper.
  68. We have also had cause to complain severally, including to the Inspector General of
Police that certain officials of the Ghana Police Service went to physically assault Baba
Iddi, and forced his hand to thumbprint certain documents. He does not know the
content of these documents. This complaint and a request to meet the IGP was
delivered to his officer nearly two months ago. We are still waiting for the Inspector
General of Police, who we want to believe is committed to reforming the Police Service
to act accordingly and even acknowledge the complaint made to him.
  69. We also note our disappointment that after over 90 days of crying for justice; and after
they have led the entire public to believe that Baba Iddi killed Kaaka, it was only after
the Report was released that the Police sent crime scene investigators to the house to
investigate the crime scene. This was just last Thursday 30 September 2021. In
essence, Police did not even taken the trouble to properly investigate the scene of the
crime before leading the onslaught against our family for several months now.
  70. All of these facts were available to the Committee, yet they chose to deliberate mislead
the public, in order to cover up their porous recommendation regarding the Ejura
    killings.
The Next Steps by the Family
  71. At this stage, we would like to inform the Press of some of the steps the Family will be
    taking.
  72. After due deliberation, the family has decided:
    a. To make a formal police complaint against the said Aminu Mohammed
regarding the allegation of bribery and corruption he made against the mother
of Kaaka and the Ejura Police. We think that this accusation should not be taken
for granted as it taints the Ejura Police in a considerable manner. We believe
that it is in the interest of the Ejura Police to get to the bottom of this allegation
of corruption and dereliction of duty made against the Ghana Police Service.
This is important to ensure the faith of the public in the work of the Police
    Service.
    b. To make a formal police complaint regarding the Sadia Fuseini and her sidekick
Muniratu Alhassan for what we believe to be deliberate lies and attempts to
deceive the police in the performance of their functions.
    c. To request another audience with the Inspector-General of Police regarding our
displeasure with the investigations into Kaaka’s murder.
  73. The family is also considering all its legal rights in connection with the Report of the
Ejura Committee; including the possibility of legal actions against the members of the
Ejura Committee and some of the witnesses who appeared before them.
  74. In this connection, are also asking for the support of the public towards the welfare
needs of Kaaka’s widow and five children who have been left behind; as well as to
support our fight for justice. We would appreciate any help towards covering our legal
fees, in this quest for justice.
  75. We are also hoping that a fund will be established to honour Kaaka and to train
upcoming citizen journalists, who understand the virtue of speaking truth to the
establishment. We have made an appeal to the National Chief Imam to support us in
this endeavour. We are also counting on the support of the public to protect Kaaka’s
legacy, by supporting the fund when instituted.
  76. Kaaka died as a hero! And we are certain that his courage and conviction will defy the
cowardice of those who refuse him justice. We are confident that his memory will
inspire a new generation of Ghanaians who will take up the call in our nation anthem
for us to cherish fearless honesty and to boldly defend our democracy!
  77. Thank You all for coming.

Kaaka Macho’s family petitions Chief Imam https://www.adomonline.com/kaaka-machos-family-petitions-chief-imam/ Thu, 09 Sep 2021 19:58:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2012854 The family of the late social media activist, Ibrahim Muhammed, aka Kaaka Macho, has presented a petition to the office of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Sharubutu.

The petition from the family is to push for a swift probe into his death following what the family described as a slow pace of the investigation.

The family’s spokesperson, Nafiu Mohammed, led a delegation to present the petition on Thursday, September 9, 2021.

The legal officer to the Chief Imam, Seidu Nasigri, received the petition on his behalf amid assurances to publicise the outcome.

“It is when we sit with him [Chief Imam] and possibly after deliberations that the information will be made known to the family and possibly the press,” he said.

The spokesperson, on his part, expressed confidence the Chief Imam’s office will help to unearth the truth to hold perpetrators accountable, adding that they need a ‘neutral voice’ outside the judiciary.

“We are looking at a way that he will help to enhance the process so things that are not done right will be done right,” he noted.

The activist died on admission at the Komfo Another Teaching Hospital at 01:40 am on June 28, 2021, after assailants attacked his occipital area with clubs when the deceased entered his Dagomba Line family house at Ejura on June 26, 2021.

Two people were killed whilst four others sustained gunshot wounds when the youth at Ejura protested over the murder of the activist.

A three-member committee was set up after President Nana Akufo-Addo gave the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, 10 days to provide a detailed report of the inquiry, which also led to the death and injury of some residents at Ejura.

The family, following the work of the committee, said instead of prioritising the need to unearth the truth to hold perpetrators accountable, it became an “incubator of fake news and an attack dog on the media.”

However, three persons including Kaaka’s brother, Iddi Mohammed are standing trial at the Asokwa District Court over his death.
