The apology follows a “despicable and divisive” comment made by the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Kwaku Asante Boateng, during an interview with Adom TV, in which he suggested that Dr. Bawumia is unfit to lead the party.

Speaking during Samira Bawumia’s visit to delegates in Asante Akyem Juaso, where she was campaigning for her husband to become the NPP flagbearer, Kyei Noah stated that such remarks from a party MP would not help promote unity among members.

He urged delegates to vote overwhelmingly for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, targeting 80 percent support in the upcoming NPP presidential primaries, scheduled for December 31, 2026.

New research reveals Samira Bawumia substantially redefined second lady role https://www.adomonline.com/new-research-reveals-samira-bawumia-substantially-redefined-second-lady-role/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 15:34:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528829 A new research study, published by a reputable and peer-reviewed international journal, has found that Samira Bawumia contributed significantly to the transformation of the second lady position during her husband’s tenure as the Vice President.

The study, which was published by Drumspeak, the International Journal of Research in the Humanities and co-authored by Prof.G. Etse Sikanku and Dr Louise Carol Donkor, sought to analyse media narratives of the second lady among selected credible media houses in Ghana.

Findings indicate that Mrs Bawumia was perceived as a stabilising force due to her decorous, spousal, motherly, gentle, no-drama and generally decent demeanour as second lady.

Though she seemed to have fulfilled her traditional role as a second lady, the second highest frame unearthed was the social interventionist frame.

This frame pointed to Mrs Bawumia’s socially minded programs, particularly for young girls, women and children, that sought to equip them with skills, inspire and empower them to achieve their goals.

As second lady, Mrs Bawumia was highly involved in a variety of national and international initiatives that sought to address the welfare of underprivileged girls, the youth and other vulnerable groups in society.

It was not surprising that this constituted one of the most prevalent frames discovered by the authors.

Another major narrative associated with the second lady was her political role. In this role, the second lady was seen as a strong, efficient and eloquent communicator who contributed significantly to campaigns and political communication in the country.

Her voice and highly substantive political discourse marked a new phase in Ghana’s democracy, as it has become evident that second ladies can contribute meaningfully to democratic politics.

Put together, Sikanku and Donkor (2025) conclude that Samira Bawumia’s time as second lady was marked by significant change as she did not just limit herself to the stereotypical roles of political spouses but made a recognisable impact as an engaging, vocal and socially oriented advocate.

She was a very visible and effective figure on the campaign trail and also an influential second lady.

This research demonstrates that she personifies an era of extraordinary change in the role of second ladies through her unique and multitasking roles as a force of dignity, stability, but also a crucible agent of change, social welfare and public advocacy.

In terms of contribution to knowledge and the usefulness of the study, authors Sikanku and Donkor write that “This research will contribute to knowledge on the reportage of high-profile political spouses, particularly the position of the second lady, which, although elevated or expanded in stature, has not seen corresponding academic scrutiny.

Prof Etse Sikanku

This study not only fills an important gap in academic literature as it constitutes one of the earliest studies of media representation of the position of second ladies in Ghana, but also further contributes to the literature on framing and coverage of female public figures by using media from a less studied jurisdiction thereby expanding knowledge on spousal political framing and leadership.”

In a political space which is sometimes filled with drama, controversy and scandals, Mrs Bawumia’s non scandal and highly respectable time as second lady, evidently demonstrated through the media analysis, shows that she continues to be an exemplary second lady through her conduct.

By so doing elevated the public participation of women in politics through her eloquent and energetic participation in political campaigns, governance, social intervention programs and advocacy.

“Safe Delivery Project” led by Samira Bawumia records zero maternal and neonatal deaths in Saboba https://www.adomonline.com/safe-delivery-project-led-by-samira-bawumia-records-zero-maternal-and-neonatal-deaths-in-saboba/ Thu, 24 Apr 2025 13:43:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528351 The Safe Delivery Project, an initiative led by the Second Lady, Her Excellency Hajia Samira Bawumia, through the Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Projects (SEHP), has recorded a historic milestone in the Saboba District of the Northern Region, with zero institutional maternal and neonatal deaths reported during the project’s implementation period.

This feat was celebrated at a grand durbar held in Saboba to mark the official closure of the project in the district.

The event brought together government officials, health professionals, religious leaders, beneficiaries of the project, as well as expectant mothers in the district.

The project, launched in May 2018 by the founder and Chair of the Africa Women and Children Conference (AFRIWOCC), Mrs. Bawumia, in the East Gonja Municipality, seeks to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality and promote safe delivery practices in underserved communities across Ghana.

As part of the project, birth kits containing essential supplies needed for safe deliveries are distributed to expectant mothers in their third trimester.

The contents of the kits include medicated soap for handwashing and cleaning the mother’s perineum, a clean delivery mat to provide a hygienic surface for childbirth, methylated spirit for disinfection, a sterile blade for cutting the umbilical cord, cord clamps to safely tie the umbilical cord, a pair of sterile gloves for the birth attendant, gauze swabs for cleaning, and combined dressing.

Other supplies include a baby hat for warmth, cot sheet, and nametag for the baby, anti-haemorrhage prophylaxis to prevent excessive bleeding after birth, as well as prenatal and postnatal vitamins and mineral supplements for the mother.

The project also focuses on resourcing local health facilities, as well as providing training for health workers, volunteers, and Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) on safe delivery practices.

Delivering a keynote address on behalf of Mrs. Bawumia, a celebrated maternal and child health advocate, Dominic Nitiwul, the former Minister for Defence and Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, lauded the achievements of the project and reaffirmed the commitment of Mrs. Bawumia and SEHP to the welfare of mothers and children across Ghana.

He noted that the Safe Delivery Project was birthed out of the former Second Lady’s vision to ensure that no woman dies while giving life, particularly in underserved areas where access to healthcare remains a challenge.

“The statistics that informed this initiative were worrying, with Saboba being one of the districts with the highest maternal mortality rates in the country.

The Safe Delivery Project has turned that story around, and today, we are celebrating life and progress,” he said.

The project, which provided over 4,000 expectant mothers with birth kits and supported 22 health facilities across the district, also led to a 79 percent increase in antenatal and postnatal care attendance.

The Paramount Chief for the Saboba Traditional Area, Ubor Bowan John Mateer Sakojim IV, commended Mrs. Bawumia for her advocacy and support for women and children over the years.

He noted that the project has been dear to his heart because of its transformational effect on the lives of women.

He was happy to announce that the district had not recorded any institutional deaths since the start of this intervention in April 2023.

The District Director of Health Services for Saboba, Mr. Zaid Arimiyaw, in his remarks, also commended SEHP and its partners for the significant strides made in maternal and newborn health.

He revealed that, prior to the intervention, many women gave birth under unsafe conditions, contributing to the district’s high maternal and neonatal mortality rates.

“With the support of SEHP, our healthcare system was strengthened, birth kits were distributed, and our health staff were retooled and retrained. Today, we can proudly say that not a single mother or newborn was lost during this period,” he said.

The project in Saboba builds on the success of similar interventions in the East Gonja Municipality and North East Gonja District, which also recorded significant reductions in maternal mortality after SEHP’s intervention.

“The Safe Delivery Project has shown that public-private partnerships are key in addressing maternal and neonatal health challenges.

These are not just numbers—we are talking about lives saved and communities transformed,” he stated.

Other speakers at the event urged for sustained training for health workers, community engagement, and the integration of such initiatives into national policy frameworks.

Her Excellency Hajia Samira Bawumia, through the former Defence Minister, expressed her gratitude to all stakeholders including the Ghana Health Service, KGL Foundation, and MedShare USA, local health workers, community leaders, and all who played a role in making the project a success.

“This is not the end, but the beginning of a broader commitment to make maternal and neonatal healthcare accessible, safe, and sustainable across Ghana,” he conveyed.

She reiterated her unwavering commitment to ensuring that every Ghanaian mother, regardless of her location, has access to safe and dignified childbirth.

Samira Bawumia calls for urgent action on Clean Energy Transition https://www.adomonline.com/samira-bawumia-calls-for-urgent-action-on-clean-energy-transition/ Fri, 21 Mar 2025 13:50:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2517510

Founder and chair of the Africa Women and Children Conference (AFRIWOCC), Mrs. Samira Bawumia, has made an urgent appeal for an expedited transition to clean energy, stressing that the world is running out of time to ensure universal energy access.

Speaking at the 2025 Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) Global Forum in Barbados, she challenged world leaders, businesses, and civil society to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete steps toward energy transition.

“Clean energy is not just about sustainability; it is about justice, security, and shared prosperity,” she highlighted. “With less than five years left to meet the SDG7 targets, we must act decisively and immediately.”

Mrs. Bawumia painted a distressing picture of the energy crisis, particularly in Africa, where over 675 million people live without electricity, and 2.3 billion rely on hazardous biomass fuels for cooking.

She warned that dependence on wood, charcoal, and fossil fuels is not only degrading the environment but also causing significant health hazards, disproportionately affecting women and children.

As a passionate advocate for women and children, Mrs. Bawumia called for integrating their interests into national and international energy policies.

She cited impactful programs such as Forward7 by the Middle East Green Initiative, which aims to transform 750 million lives through clean cooking innovation, and Mission 300, an initiative launched by the World Bank Group and the African Development Bank to bring electricity to 300 million Africans by 2030.

“Clean energy solutions must be affordable, scalable, and community-centered,” she emphasized. “This is about more than cooking; it’s about health, economic empowerment, and environmental sustainability.”

Mrs. Bawumia is a globally recognized champion for sustainable energy. She serves as a Global Ambassador for the Clean Cooking Alliance, the Clean Air Fund, and WHO’s Health and Energy Platform for Action.

In 2019, she was honored with the Seven for 7 Award by SEforALL and Ashden for her outstanding contributions to clean energy access.

Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) is a global initiative committed to ensuring universal access to sustainable energy.

Working alongside governments, businesses, and international organizations, it accelerates progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7)—providing affordable, reliable, and modern energy for all by 2030.

The SEforALL Global Forum serves as a key event for driving policies, investments, and partnerships to advance the clean energy agenda.

In a recent interview, Nana Boadi claimed that Samira was deeply invested in her husband’s bid for the presidency, envisioning herself as a First Lady with a flair for style and public presence.

“Dr. Bawumia is not happy; he did his best and was desperate for the position,” Nana Boadi said.

“But somebody else was even more unhappy—Samira. She was so desperate for the position.”

Nana Boadi noted that, Samira Bawumia played a highly visible role during the NPP campaign, often taking centre stage.

He attributed this to her desire to become First Lady and her ability to captivate the public with her fashion and charisma.

“You know, our good old Auntie Rebecca [Akufo-Addo], she was not that outgoing, and so Samira was mostly at the forefront. She longed to be the First Lady,” he said.

He added, “If the NPP had won, she would have slayed a lot. ‘She will slay aaah Ghanaian ladies all go bore die,’” he quipped, suggesting her style would have set trends and perhaps even drawn envy.

Nana Boadi implied that Samira’s visible disappointment reflected the broader mood within the Bawumia household after the election loss.

“She is very unhappy,” he stated.

NPP will produce the first Muslim President – NPP Chairman https://www.adomonline.com/npp-will-produce-the-first-muslim-president-npp-chairman/ Tue, 12 Nov 2024 15:29:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2471081 The Volta Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Makafui Woanyah, has expressed strong confidence that, with the support of Ghanaians, his party will usher in the country’s first Muslim President in the Fourth Republic.

Mr. Woanyah highlighted the selection of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP Presidential Candidate, calling it a demonstration of the party’s commitment to inclusivity and social equity, principles enshrined in the NPP Constitution.

Speaking at the 12th Annual Conference of Tabitaal Pulaaku in Ho, a gathering of Fulanis residing in Ghana, Mr. Woanyah declared, “After December 7th, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia will be sworn in as President, and Her Excellency Samira Bawumia will be the First Lady of Ghana.”

“NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey said no Muslim or Fulani could become President of Ghana, let alone a First Lady,” he recounted, further accusing the NDC of denying Fulanis the right to register as voters and access to the National Health Insurance Scheme and primary healthcare.

“We witnessed the killing of 200 Fulanis under their government. We came to address these issues. Unlike the NDC’s record, our party’s constitution does not permit tribal discrimination,” he added.

Mr. Woanyah urged Fulanis in Ghana to reject the NDC, citing the alleged injustices faced by their community, and to support Dr. Bawumia, whom he described as a tolerant and inclusive leader.

He also noted that by electing Dr. Bawumia, who is connected to the Fulani community through marriage, the Fulanis would have a closer presence in the government.

“On the ballot, look no further than No. 1. On January 7, [2025], your mother, sister, or daughter will become Ghana’s First Lady.”

She made the appeal when she addressed a mammoth rally at Akyem Oda last weekend to canvass for votes for Dr Bawumia.

Mrs Bawumia stressed that her husband, who was the first-ever Muslim presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was very humble, honest, affable, submissive and hard working.

She urged the electorate not to vote for former President John Mahama for condemning the introduction of the free Senior High School programme and other social interventions by the NPP but which eventually succeeded and brought relief to Ghanaians.

According to her, Dr Bawumia had promised to equip one million youth with digital skills which would help them to secure jobs.

Mrs Bawumia gave the assurance that when voted into power, Dr Bawumia would establish a special bank for women who constituted majority of the population to secure soft loans for the expansion of their businesses.

97 % votes

She appealed to the electorate to retain Mr Akwasi Acquah as their legislator to assist her husband when he was elected as the next President.

She praised the people in the Oda Constituency for voting massively for the NPP since the inception of the fourth republic.

For his part, Akwasi Acquah enjoined the NPP supporters in the area to intensify their campaigns by moving from house to house and all vantage points to ensure a resounding victory for Dr Bawumia and the NPP in the upcoming general election.

The National Women’s Organiser of the NPP, Kate Gyamfua, emphasised that the Nana Akufo-Addo-led NPP government had constructed more roads, schools and hospitals than any other government since the inception of the first republic.

She stressed that the introduction of the Free SHS programme had benefited many homes who could now boast of a lot of educated people.

Ms Gyamfua reassured the people that a Dr Bawumia government would maintain the payment of nursing and teacher trainee allowances.
The Oda Zongo Chief, Alhaji Sulemana Adamu, prayed for victory for Dr Bawumia in the upcoming general election to become the first Muslim President for the republic.
Other speakers at the ceremony included Michael Omane Wadie, a former First National Vice Chairman of the NPP, and the Eastern Regional Chairman of the party, Jeff Konadu Addo.

Samira Bawumia denies her involvement in East Legon property demolition https://www.adomonline.com/samira-bawumia-denies-her-involvement-in-east-legon-property-demolition/ Wed, 10 Apr 2024 03:47:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2379233 The office of the 2nd Lady, Samira Bawumia, has clarified that she has no hand in the reported demolition of a building in the Adjiriganor enclave in Accra, which is at the centre of a legal tussle between two parties.

The demolition is alleged to have been carried out by the Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), who happens to be a brother of Samira Bawumia.

Nonetheless, the Office of the 2nd Lady says the suggestions that the demolition was her handiwork are false.

The demolished property is supposedly owned by Mr George Oti Bonsu, a former Chairman of the Fundraising Committee of the Assin Central legislator, in the 2023 NPP presidential primaries.

However, some documents available show that the land in question was acquired by Abu Ramadan’s father but was invaded by encroachers who wanted to take over the land.

The case surrounding the ownership of the property landed at the Adentan Municipal Court in Accra and was later transferred to the Tema High Court for appropriate jurisdiction.

In the matter between Hajia Aisha Ahmed (Plaintiff/Judgment Creditor) and George Edem Kofi Agudogo, Winchester Empire Company Ltd. (1st and 2nd Defendants/Judgment Debtors Respectively), the Adentan Circuit Court 2 granted an Order for Perpetual Injunction against the Defendants; restraining their agents, workmen, assigns, servants and any other group of persons from going onto, entering into, selling and developing the said land with “the 2 parcels of land adjudged as belonging to the Plaintiff.”

Subsequently, the plaintiff on March 11, 2024, secured an Order for Possession of the land and on March 12, 2024, the Plaintiff wrote to the Director General of the Police Legal Directorate of the Ghana Police Service of its intention to go into the execution per Writ of Possession served on the Defendants by the Court, and requested for police assistance to carry out the order for possession.

A Search Report secured on November 25, 2022, from the Survey and Mapping Division of the Lands Commission, stated that the affected land belongs to Hajia Aisha Ahmed.

The wife of the Vice President, Samira Bawumia, believes it would be malicious for anyone to link her to the incident merely due to her connection to the Deputy NADMO Director-General even though he’s not a party to the suit in court over the land.

The Office of the 2nd Lady believes the story is merely an attempt to tarnish her image and that of her husband as the country heads to the poll in December.

THE TRUE FACTS OF HAJIA AISHA AHMED V GEORGE OTI BONSU AND WINCHESTER EMPIRE LTD (Suit No. C1/11/2021)

  1. The Plaintiff (Hajia Aisha Ahmed) is the legal and beneficial owner of two parcels of land being:
    (a) ALL THAT PIECE OR PARCEL OF LAND situated and lying at Dzornaman, (Ability, Adjiriganor ) in the Adenta Municipality in the Greater Accra Region of the Republic of Ghana, containing an approximate area of 0.80 acres or 0.32 hectare (hereinafter called “Property A”), and
    (b) ALL THAT PIECE OR PARCEL OF LAND situated and lying at Dzornaman (Ability, Adjiriganor) in the Adenta Municipality in the Greater Accra Region of the Republic of Ghana, containing an approximate area of 0.13 acre or 0.05 hectares (hereinafter called “Property B”).
  2. Hajia Aisha concluded the purchase of Property after having taken the necessary steps, including legal searches, to ascertain the root of the title of her grantor and was satisfied that her grantor, the Okpong-We Family duly represented by its Head and Lawful Representative, Nii Tawiah Osabu-Kle was the lawful and proper owner of the lands in that area, with an encumbrance from Ibrahim Brobase Limited.
  3. Soon after the lease was executed, the Plaintiff sought the assistance of the Ghana Police Service in Adenta to move all the squatters onto the Property and build a wall around the Property to secure the land. The said wall was demolished by George Oti Bonsu a few days after it was put up.
  4. Upon acquiring Property A, Plaintiff commenced registration of the land to register her title to the land, which was plotted at the Public and Vested Lands Management Division of the Lands Commission with the number LXDGAST20289582020.
  5. Plaintiff began registering the land wherein Property B was plotted at the Public and Vested Lands Management Division and Survey and Mapping Division of the Lands Commission as LRDTDR10274282020.
  6. On or about July 2020, Plaintiff was informed that some workers had moved onto Property A and Property B (hereinafter collectively called “Properties”), trespassed and interfered with the quiet possession of Plaintiff, wherein Plaintiff sent a representative to inquire into the said information. Upon meeting the workers, they claimed that George Oti Bonsu had contracted them to construct housing units on the Properties.
  7. Hajia Aisha duly filed a complaint on 7 August 2020 at the Criminal Investigation Division of the Ghana Police Service and the Property Fraud Unit and Anti-Land Guard Unit of the Ghana Police Service.
  8. Subsequently, the Police arrested the workers on the Properties. However, George Oti Bonsu sent a different group of workers to the Properties to develop the said Properties.
  9. George Oti Bonsu attempted to bribe the lawful attorney of Aisha with an amount of GH¢20,000, but he rejected this. George Oti Bonsu further told the attorney that, George Oti Bonsu had no documentation of the Properties, but the said representatives should allow him to develop the Properties without any further interference.
  10. That the continuous development of the Properties by George Oti Bonsu caused the Plaintiff to file the instant suit and Interim Injunction out of the registry of this honourable court, which said the interim injunction was granted on 23 October 2020.
  11. Hajia Aisha continued with the registration of the Property without any objections from any third party. Thus, a search at the Lands Commission will show that the Plaintiff is the legal and beneficial owner of the properties.
  12. On the 25th Day of January 2021, when the bailiff of this honourable court served the order of Interlocutory Injunction on the Respondent at the site of the properties, George Oti Bonsu, in the full glare of the Police, ordered his workers and assigns to continue with the development of the land and some have continued to date with wanton disregard for the orders of this honourable court.
  13. Hajia Aisha was able to duly register the land at the Land Title Registry of the Lands Commission with GLPIN and Plotting Number – GA 1216053-358490.
  14. Hajia Aisha maintained an action against George Oti Bonsu and Winchester Empire at the Courts in Adenta as both of us were sued in Tema as defendants by Winchester Empire. An application for injunction against Hajia and George was dismissed by the Tema High Court and the case was never pursued again by Winchester, leaving the case between Hajia Aisha v George Oti Bonsu and Winchester Empire at the Adenta Courts.
  15. During all material times at the court, George Oti Bonsu refused to come to court and every court process was served on him by substituted service. Due to this an interlocutory judgment was granted against George Oti Bonsu and served on him and he continued to develop on the land and several police attempts to stop him proved futile.
  16. Hajia Aisha went ahead to prove her case and judgment was awarded to her on the 28th Day of November, 2023.
  17. Hajia Aisha Ahmed entered Judgment and the same was served on George Oti Bonsu on 19th December, 2023.
  18. A writ of possession was granted by the courts for Hajia Aisha to take possession of the Land on 11th March 2024 and the same was served on George Oti Bonsu.
  19. On 12th of March, 2024, the Judicial Secretary wrote to the Inspector General of Police through the Director General of the Police Legal Directorate to assist Hajia Aisha in taking possession of her land and attached certified true copies of all land documents and judgment.

Samira Bawumia announces juicy package for late bodyguard’s children https://www.adomonline.com/samira-bawumia-announces-juicy-package-for-late-bodyguards-children/ Tue, 23 Jan 2024 07:32:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2345261 The highlight of Sunday’s Islamic funeral for the late Fuseini Mumuni, bodyguard of the Second Lady Samira Bawumia, was the announcement of an education package for his two kids.

The children, Amina and Suleiman Fuseni will be catered for till their completion of tertiary education by Mrs Bawumia with support from the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare.

The bodyguard died in an accident which involved one of the cars in Mrs Bawumia’s convoy with registration number GN 4096 -20 and a Toyota Hilux pick-up with registration number AS 4247-17.

Sunday’s ceremony, the final Adua was a solemn spiritual exercise for the soul of Mr Mumuni brought together several dignitaries.

Occasional Kwatriot Kwesi Yankah writes: Presidential convoys and road tragedies https://www.adomonline.com/occasional-kwatriot-kwesi-yankah-writes-presidential-convoys-and-road-tragedies/ Tue, 16 Jan 2024 18:40:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2342686 News last weekend of a fatal crash involving the convoy of Mrs Samira Bawumia, wife of our esteemed Vice President brings me to my feet.

One life lost is one too many. The nation has lost Fuseini Mumuni, Samira’s veteran body guard, who sacrificed his dear life for the entire entourage.

When such personalities depart, we are left with the smoldering remains of a burning log. The centerpiece of a household is gone, leaving deprived families and relations to the elements.

Election years come with such tragedies brought on by busy itineraries of parties, politicians, and electorates.

While conveying condolences to Fuseini’s bereaved family plus the Vice President and his wife, we advise all parties and politicians across board to be mindful of election years and intrinsic hazards.

It may all be blamed  on whoever decided to equate elections with a race. If this is called a ‘race,’ and participants have to ‘run’ for it, do you blame those who do not ‘walk,’ but rush or stampede in an election year.

And if we decide that running for elections amounts to speeding on the highway, why not? The danger in the metaphor needn’t be taken lightly.

That is why it would probably be better to stand, not run, for political positions. That would make the work of Dampare’s police, and the Fire Service easier.

Late 2007, when Ghana was heading towards an election year, a spate of accidents involving political convoys compelled me to pick my pen.

Even while I was laboring in Legon with Cliff Tagoe at the hilltop, I managed to occasionally lift my fountain pen and write for ‘Ghanaian Times,’ where I was Chair of the Management Board.

The order to write a column after several years in retirement, was from my esteemed Managing Director, Nanabanyin Pratt whose directive I obeyed. Listen to my pen in 2007 when President Kufuor’s convoy was involved in a crash. You may consider this as part of my forthcoming write-a-thon.

PRESIDENTIAL CONVOYS

November 2007

Oh boy oh boy! This is perhaps a year of accidents and presidential ambulances. How else does one explain the spate of accidents involving presidential hopefuls and ‘unhopeful’?

Such that in their bid to be president, they have decided to faithfully follow every twist of the presidential script. Let JAK the Taller move with his presidential entourage in a speedy convoy, the hopefuls will proceed likewise frantically rehearsing for the high  position; let JAK’s convoy flash hazard lights, the aspirants will follow suit.

Let a sniffing ‘drunk’ driver speed up from AFGO and crash into JAK’s motorcade at Opeibea House. In reply a charcoal truck from nowhere in Brong Ahafo will dance his way awkwardly into the Alan convoy. In Accra, a drunken saloon car in an attempt to puke, would then decide to bump into Nana Addo leaving a cruel dent on his bumper.

If the full script had rolled out, all the hopefuls after being pulled from their vehicles by good Samaritans, would perhaps have held their heads in pain and agony to complete the November theatre.

It all looks like he who wants to be president, has to show evidence of pain and head injuries, a veritable sign that they have ever sacrificed for Mother Ghana, and therefore qualify for your votes.

Rewards would then pour forth in thanksgiving services, national prayers, and visits by chiefs and potential delegates.  If we are not lucky that would be another opportunity to boost fundraising for December 22nd.

In the good old days, you had to be a prison graduate after Osagyefo, Gbedemah, etc. to be taken seriously as a politician. Prison and suffering became a metaphor for political leadership.  And if you had not been chased into exile or imprisoned, you would forever remain in the rear seat.

If you wanted to be leader, pray to have been jailed and tortured. That was indeed the role of the Preventive Detention Act. It was an unintended agenda for leadership training.

And that is why in this coming month of CJA demonstration, the police should not succumb to the temptation of arresting demonstrators, and clamping them in jail. That single act may further swell the number of presidential candidates!!

But were the signs not clear that the month November would be ‘accidental?’ It often begins with the traffic build up towards the Tetteh Quarshie interchange, which compels Kweku Ananse taxis to transform into ambulances blaring emergency horns and shoving their way through heavy traffic.

In the rear seat is often a forty-year old man, sandwiched, eyes popping, head dangling on a shoulder, and virtually dying. Vehicles nervously pull over to save a life.

The taxi must be heading towards 37, everybody believes; except that it eventually speeds past 37, past Ridge Hospital, and heads in a direction where no hospital is known— Makola.

In a matter of minutes, the ‘patient’ resurrects, blinks serially and laughs all the way to makola market to buy a funeral cloth.

The theatre heightens with the real thing. A presidential motorcade speeds up in full flight, weaving its way through a sea of cars, and blares a piercing siren. Panic spreads, drivers quiver, pedestrians tremble, and passengers freeze, peering through side windows  and anxiously checking for the vehicle carrying their leader.

They all gleefully point in one direction, “There he is. It is the dark blue numberless Limo.” Half a dozen vehicles in rapid succession meander across in tow, disorienting the orderly beeline.

A few stubborn on-lookers frown in disgust; their vehicles tarry, they drag their feet, and refuse to fully pull over in compliance.

One such receives a brutal sidekick from the executive motor escort— he gleefully stood on his motor, rocked from side to side, and brazenly gave a sidekick to the rebellious saloon car, pointing an index finger at him, and turning round occasionally to monitor his compliance.

The scene is more chaotic at roundabouts. The convoy navigates through an unmoving traffic at Circle, covering every inch of space available, until the traffic maze is cleared.

Where necessary, the convoy serially jumps across the concrete median, and moves in the ‘wrong’ direction of the dual carriage. If it is a busy roundabout, presidential convoys may risk head-on collision and move in a clockwise direction against oncoming traffic, making sure all movement freezes in compliance.

Authority however ends when a tipper truck or articulator emerges from a distance. Since the real road master now cometh, the lawless motorcade advisedly slows down and takes temporary cover.

In the past 15 years, several lives have been lost and serious injuries sustained—- presidential escort riders, executives in the entourage, innocent bystanders, other drivers and passengers have suffered.

His Jerryship’s convoys endured it several times; lives were  lost on the Tema motor way when a hapless tro tro from nowhere crossed the convoy.

Vice Pee, the Zongo Boy Aliu, has suffered it. Uncle Nkensen, the stubborn cat, had a mysterious accident during the days he was ‘misbehaving.’ Ministers and MPs with or without convoys, have been through it, leading to bye elections.

As for Hilla Lee, he did not endure it while he lived, but suffered it on his demise. As his body was driven through the Northern region towards Gwollu, his home town in Upper West, the convoy crashed, and injuries were sustained by relatives.

For JAK the Taller, this is not the first time in the past 7 years. But to date, he is the only one to have been directly hit as President.

Consequently, vehicles have been smashed, scratched, dented, written off. New orphans and widows have been spawned; and presidents have quickly altered their itineraries to attend funerals, and visit the bereaved.

The lives of our leaders are precious to us, and every effort must be made to ensure their safety. But drivers of presidential convoys, of ministers, MPs and Big Men need refresher courses in safety, sobriety and humility.

A course in the sociology of power should be fine, for power within our context is an intoxicant, and could promote lawlessness on roads and highways.

On highways, lawlessness may return in the name of Presidential safety. Motor  Escort Number One moves in the wrong lane, and with a hand wave commands oncoming vehicles to halt. The entire road is ours, they imply.

It zooms past with lightening speed, and waves vehicles off to the shoulder lane, ensuring free passage to the speeding convoy. When one car accidentally brakes to avoid a pregnant goat, the rest screech and swerve, and dive. Many a time they crash, and somersault. In Ghanaian parlance, it somersaulted three times!

This way, one need not become an assassin, in order to endanger the life of a president; you need not get drunk, before slamming into a presidential convoy.

The President’s convoy in itself becomes an ambulance, automatically carrying the President to an emergency ward. Presidential convoys may simply display fondness for traveling ‘accidentally.’

Speaking exclusively in an interview with Adom News‘ Jackson Osei Ntiamoah, the proud father stated it is always a delight and a joyful sight to behold whenever his children come together.

However, Mr Ramadan who is Ghana’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates has said their different political colours have never been a hindrance to their unity and growth as a family.

“I feel good about my children because sometimes we come under the same roof, they ridicule each other and they move on. The MP can tell their sister your party is not doing well and vice versa and we all laugh over it. They believe like the cockerel, they can fight but do not peck each other’s eye,” he said joyfully.

To him, the good thing is that he is not the only father whose children are in different parties.

Clean cooking policy a must – Samira Bawumia advocates https://www.adomonline.com/clean-cooking-policy-a-must-samira-bawumia-advocates/ Wed, 12 Oct 2022 13:06:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2170993 The wife of the Vice President and Global Ambassador for the Clean Cooking Alliance, Samira Bawumia, has carried her fight for clean energy to the doorsteps of policymakers.

In her latest advocacy, her objective is to have policies promoting clean energy to curb the devastating effects of other alternatives.

“Governments and development agencies should continue taking measures to prioritize the issue of clean cooking as a major policy initiative.

“There is the need to Integrate clean cooking into government programs and policies and encourage the use of sustainable clean cooking solutions.

“A concerted political will is essential to ensure the progress of the clean cooking sector. High-level political will and action are a must. I am glad to see a strong representation from our government today,” she stated.

Samira Bawumia was speaking at the Clean Cooking Forum by the Clean Cooking Alliance held in Accra on Tuesday, October 11, 2022.

With her role as an Ambassador for the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves and demonstrated achievements at the forefront of clean energy initiatives in recent years, her influence informed the decision to host this year’s forum in Ghana.

The forum brought together global leaders such as Ingrid Mollestad, Norwegian Ambassador to Ghana; Virginia A. Palmer, U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Ghana; Katja Lasseur, Deputy Head of Mission, Netherlands Embassy in Ghana; Vincent Wierda, IDE Energy Lead, Africa, Asia and the Pacific, United Nations Capital Development Fund; Carla Montesi, Director at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for International Partnerships.

Others include Dymphna van der Lans, CEO, Clean Cooking Alliance; Shirley McAlpine, Founder, Shirley McAlpine & Associates; Dr Kandeh Yumkella, Founder and CEO of the Energy Nexus Network; Dr. Leela Hazzah, Executive Director & Co-founder, Lion Guardians and Co-founder & Leadership Council, WE Africa; Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All and Co-Chair of UN-Energy; Ashvin Dayal, Senior Vice President Power and Climate, Rockefeller Foundation; and Rebecca Akufo-Addo, First Lady of the Republic of Ghana; under one roof for the common cause.

Delivering the opening remarks at the event, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo pointed out that “it will take sound public policies, a holistic approach, and long-term commitment from all development actors”.

For her, “reducing cooking emissions is critical to reducing forest degradation, improving health, empowering women, and children, protecting the environment, and helping achieve numerous other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”.

Mrs Bawumia was optimistic that the forum would pave the way for expedited action required to help bring clean cooking to the billions who live without it.

Outlining the reasons for a shift in current energy trends that have a devastating impact on human lives and the environment, she observed that:

“The simple act of cooking [using unclean fuels and technology] is a leading source of global air pollution and causes more deaths each year than HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. It is one of the most underfunded – and furthest behind – indicators in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), receiving less than one per cent of the estimated resources needed to address it”.

To buttress her point, she cited research from the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and Climate Analytics, highlighting that the world remains far off track in achieving universal access to clean energy by 2030.

Again, she referred to the SEforAll, which estimates that, for Ghana, the full transition from wood and charcoal to clean fuels could take 50 years or more.

And by 2030, only 40 per cent of the population will reach improved cookstoves access, and only 18 per cent will achieve clean fuel access.

“This means the business-as-usual approach has not been as effective as it should be. So much more needs to be done,” she stressed.

Mrs Bawumia was concerned that air pollution causes more than seven million deaths yearly, with 1.1 million deaths occurring in Africa.

Household air pollution, primarily driven by indoor cookstoves, accounted for 700,000 fatalities, while increased outdoor air pollution claimed 400,000 lives.

The World Bank estimates that 16,000 people die prematurely from air pollution yearly in Ghana.

“Each number in these millions represents a mother, father, son, daughter, or friend who is loved by their loved ones. These deaths are avoidable and unacceptable,” she said.

In conclusion, she couldn’t agree more with Riccardo Puliti, the Global Director, Energy and Extractive Industries and Regional Director for Infrastructure, Africa for the World Bank, who asserted that:

“Clean cooking must be a political, economic, and environmental priority, supported by policies and backed by investments and multi-sector partnerships. To make that kind of change, the level of commitment and the scale of investment matter”.

Ghana’s 2nd Lady to speak at WHO’s energy meeting https://www.adomonline.com/ghanas-2nd-lady-to-speak-at-whos-energy-meeting/ Thu, 06 Oct 2022 16:46:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2169468 Ghana’s Second Lady, Her Excellency, Mrs Samira Bawumia, a champion of clean and safe cooking methods, is on the WHO list of eminent personalities and global icons, for advocacy on the use of clean energy in both domestic and medical facilities.

Upon assumption of her official role in 2017, Mrs. Samira Bawumia, set sights on improving lives by broaching areas that had very little publicity. Ghana had the new dawn when campaign on the theme resonated.

Yet, there is still more to be done, given the greater mobilisation effort by the World Health Organisation, (WHO).

Though Ghana had established its chapter of the Clean Cooking Initiative by 2014, it is believed the far-reaching voice of Mrs Samira Bawumia will make the difference in both awareness creation and actual adoption of clean fuel and cooking stoves. Unsafe energy could be likened to hideous insects that gnaw at the core of livelihoods in silence. It takes a conscious campaign to create the necessary ambience and the alert on unsafe energy. As it pitches its invaluable platform for ideas, the global health body remains resolute within the teething challenges on the planet.

It believes that, the continued advocacy by Ghana’s second lady and other significant voices around the world, will bring the subject home. At all levels of the implementation process, three important organs, the political force, the investor community and public interest, will be indispensable. Having participated in the first meeting of the coalition in Geneva last July, the second invitation on her by WHO is even more paramount as deliberations enter the crucial phase.

The coalition members are expected to present country initiatives toward use of clean, energy efficient cook-stoves and for uptake of same sources for electrification of health-care facilities.

Environmentally friendly energy is in the high notches of global campaigns in the wake of climate change. Fossil fuel, largely regarded as dirty energy, thus destructive to the planet and harmful to humans, include coal, oil, unsustainable bio-energy and waste-to-energy. The mining, exploration, transportation and the inherent dangers in fossil fuel, inform this drastic shift.
Renewable energy sources such as nuclear, solar and wind are the safest.

In its latest meeting to assess health risks inherent in unsafe energy use in households, and medical facilities, the WHO will receive concrete action plans, from which it will draw the framework, becoming the bedrock of country specific initiatives

Mrs Samira Bawumia is expected to leverage her position to bring to limelight the importance of safe cook-stoves. Again, in partners with stakeholders, she will have to galvanize the system towards the goal of universal adoption of clean cook-stoves and safer fuels in Ghana.
