The student, Jerome Appiah of 3 Science 2 and a member of Croffie House, was attacked on Thursday, February 5, 2026, in an incident involving students of SECTECH and New Juaben Senior High School.

He was rushed to the Eastern Regional Hospital by the police and was discharged on Friday, February 6, 2026. The case is currently being handled by the Regional Criminal Investigations Department.

According to an eyewitness account, tensions erupted between students of the two schools during the games but were initially brought under control by the police.

After the intervention, SECTECH students were directed to return into the stadium, while New Juaben students were escorted towards Achika.

However, along the way, some New Juaben students reportedly spotted a SECTECH student eating waakye at a food joint around the 205 area. One of them allegedly pulled out a cutlass and attacked Jerome Appiah on his right shoulder, inflicting a deep wound.

The attacker is said to have scratched the cutlass on the road afterward, causing panic, before fleeing the scene in a pragia.

In a related development, management of the school also confirmed that a teacher and a student of Koforidua SECTECH sustained serious head injuries during the final volleyball match between SECTECH and Nsutam Senior High School.

The victims, identified as Mr. Henry Kudiabo of the Technical Department and Master Lawrence Ayivor of 2 Tech A3 and Okwabi House, were reportedly hit by stones allegedly thrown by Nsutam students.

The Ghana Red Cross Society provided immediate assistance before they were taken to the hospital.

NSMQ Organisers explain why third quarter-final contest was postponed https://www.adomonline.com/nsmq-organisers-explain-why-third-quarter-final-contest-was-postponed/ Fri, 31 Oct 2025 09:56:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2594617 Organisers of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), Primetime Limited, have announced the postponement of the third quarter-final contest in Cape Coast due to a chaotic crowd surge that disrupted proceedings and raised serious safety concerns.

The contest, scheduled for Thursday, October 30, 2025, at the University of Cape Coast’s School of Graduate Studies Auditorium, was to feature Prempeh College, Adisadel College, and Mfantsipim School.

However, a massive crowd of supporters forced their way into the auditorium, overwhelming security and halting the event.

In an official statement, Primetime explained that despite extensive planning and crowd-control measures, the situation became uncontrollable, prompting the decision to call off the contest.

“Calling off the contest was the safest decision, as we wished to prevent possible clashes among supporters, especially after the contest and under the cover of darkness,” the organisers said.

Primetime noted that larger venues were available on campus, but factors such as accessibility, suitability for the NSMQ stage setup, and logistics influenced the choice of the Graduate Studies Auditorium. Each school was allocated 50 supporter slots, and additional arrangements included three outdoor viewing screens, two seminar rooms for live streaming, and security personnel.

“Unfortunately, the desire of many to be inside the recording hall led to the breach and long delay in starting the contest,” the statement added.

The organisers apologised to participating schools, fans, and stakeholders for the inconvenience and assured that the contest would be rescheduled.

“Primetime places a premium on ensuring the protection of life and property and will continue to do all we can to provide a safe environment for all who participate in our competitions,” the statement concluded.

Manso Nkwanta Chief urges residents to embrace peaceful engagement with Asanko Gold https://www.adomonline.com/manso-nkwanta-chief-urges-residents-to-embrace-peaceful-engagement-with-asanko-gold/ Wed, 15 Oct 2025 15:14:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2588791 The Paramount Chief of Manso Nkwanta, Nana Bi-Kusi Appiah II, has appealed to residents of the Manso area to resort to dialogue rather than violence in addressing their concerns with Asanko Gold Ghana.

His appeal follows a recent violent clash between the youth of Mpatuam and soldiers guarding the mine, which resulted in the death of a local assembly member and extensive damage to properties belonging to the mine’s subcontractors.

Speaking at the commissioning of a newly constructed multipurpose community centre at Manso Nkran, the Chief condemned the recurring hostilities and urged residents to prioritize peace and cooperation to foster development.

“I didn’t like what happened at Tontokrom and Mpatuam. If there is any misunderstanding, bring forth your concerns. Don’t resort to protests.Because of this, Manso is gaining a negative reputation. The works here a few. I will beseech the traditional leaders to speak with the youth that if they have any worries they should come to us,”

He continued that: “If we rather have patience and voice our concerns it would yield positive outcomes. We should meet and have dialogues that fighting each other”.

The Manso traditional area has in recent years witnessed the youth revolting against gold mining company, Asanko Gold Ghana, over possession of portions of the mine’s concessions.

They claimed the mine’s existence in the area has not yielded the needed developmental benefits and job opportunities.

He urged the residents to cease the attacks and resort to dialogue with the traditional council to settle the tensions.

The newly commissioned multipurpose community centre, worth over 2.3 million cedis, is a modern, fully furnished facility constructed to serve as a central hub for knowledge sharing, cultural exchange, community gatherings, training and development programmes.

The facility, fully funded by Asanko Gold Ghana, through its Social Responsibility Foundation (SRF) Development Fund is part of the mine’s broader multi-sectoral corporate social responsibility agenda.

Nana Bi-Kusi Appiah II pushed for more critical investments for communal development that would promote peace and stability in the area.

“When there is a company in your area, it is your responsibility to protect the interests of the business. Whatever you do as a company, you should always think about the community and how to improve the livelihoods,” he noted.

Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Asanko Gold Ghana, Dr. Charles Amoah, highlighted plans to ensure peaceful coexistence between the mine and community folks.

“We are not running the operation in a vacuum. There will always be a misunderstanding. But our operation is to use a dialogue to resolve any misunderstanding. We will endeavour to carry the community along to let them appreciate what we stand for, and what they also stand so that together we will deliver alongside our vision,” he noted.

Dr. Amoah reaffirmed Asanko’s long term commitment to responsible mining, transparency, and mutual decision making.

He emphasized that the company would continue to implement impactful initiatives, including scholarship schemes, women’s empowerment programmes, and agricultural support projects to enhance livelihoods in host communities.

“Despite challenges in the mining sector, Asanko remains committed to creating lasting value for our shareholders and host communities, recognizing them as true partners in progress,” he assured.

Amansie South District Chief Executive, Benjamin Marfo, lauded Asanko Gold for its leadership in corporate social responsibility and described the new centre as a symbol of collaboration, resilience, and renewed hope for the district.

He has been admitted to St. Martin Catholic Hospital, Agroyesum.

The incident occurred when the security officers allegedly made attempts to track down parked excavators believed to have been used for illegal mining, sparking a confrontation with aggrieved local residents and miners.

The angry residents believe the excavators are being targeted unfairly, as they were parked at homes.

Convener of the aggrieved residents, Kwaku Bobie, claimed that the security officers’ actions were unlawful since the excavators were not found at mining sites.

Assembly Member for the community, George Acheampong, expressed concerns about the recent activities of security agencies against small-scale miners.

He stated that attacking individuals at their homes could undermine government efforts to combat illegal mining.

Some youth in the community appealed to the government to consider the plight of the youth and put in place proper measures to provide job opportunities in the mining sector.

The confrontation erupted over a leadership dispute regarding small-scale mining operations in the area.

Speaking to Adom News, Nana Osei Yaw, a mining site owner, accused Christian Twumasi, popularly known as Akwala, of mismanaging small-scale mining regulations.

He claimed Akwala’s leadership had been riddled with extortion and conflicts, and following the change in government, he and others no longer recognized his authority.

According to Nana Yaw, the disagreement led Akwala to mobilize his men to attack him and his group, despite their attempt to seek refuge at the police station.

However, Akwala refuted these claims, insisting that he and his team were at their mining site when Nana Yaw’s group, led by an individual named Kapaala, stormed the area.

He alleged that Kapaala’s men threatened to shoot their driver if he attempted to leave with some of their equipment, sparking a heated argument that escalated into violence in front of the police station.

The police have since restored order and launched investigations into the incident.

Obuasi Mine Clash: Life gradually returning to normalcy as some schools resume despite fears of reprisal  https://www.adomonline.com/obuasi-mine-clash-life-gradually-returning-to-normalcy-as-some-schools-resume-despite-fears-of-reprisal/ Wed, 22 Jan 2025 19:15:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2496016 Life is gradually returning to normalcy in Obuasi following Sunday’s military clash with some illegal miners in Ghana’s oldest gold mining town.

Schools and other essential services suspended in the impasse are resuming.

However, some private and public schools are recording reduced attendance as some parents fear reprisals, despite heavy security deployment in the town.

Students at the Complex Model School in Obuasi were back to the classroom and happily engaged in the day’s activities.

In the last two days, schools, including universities, in the gold mining town closed temporarily, culminating from the violent clash between soldiers and some illegal miners in the community.

Like many other schools in the town, the Obuasi cluster of schools, housing four schools, recorded low attendance on the first day after the short break.

The situation has compelled teachers to merge classes for teaching and learning.

Cynthia Atia, a fruit vendor in the town, was busily serving her clients with her daughter who was expected to be in school aiding her sell her merchandise.

“My daughter doesn’t attend AGA school, but I am scared to let her to go to school even though schools have resumed. I will let her go on Monday instead. I am waiting for everything to be calmer than I let her go,” she said.

Life is back to the KNUST campus in Obuasi as students actively return to lectures to make up for the lost time.

But there are fears of reprisal even as they go about their academic activities.

“Though we are safe and go to class and nothing is happening around us there is this fear that something might happen. I just wish everything ends so that the psychological effect on us would be gone,” a student of the KNUST Obuasi campus told the news team.

While students in the Obuasi municipality returned to class, their colleagues in the Obuasi East district are yet to resume from the 3-day hiatus.

Classrooms at the Tutuka Methodist Primary and Junior High School in the district remained under lock and key with no student or teacher on site.

Obuasi Municipal Director of Education, George Koomson, explains the adopted measure to catch up with lost hours at school.

“With this incident and the two days lost, we are going to make sure that our morning reading sessions will be used to make up for the lost contact hours,” he said.

Mr. Koomson believes with the security deployment in town schools will be safe for academic activities to continue.

Management of the AGA Schools have also announced reopening on Monday.

Many other residents in Obuasi are eagerly awaiting the total restoration of calmness to go about their daily routine.

Uneasy calm in Tontokrom after violent clash claims 3 lives https://www.adomonline.com/uneasy-calm-in-tontokrom-after-violent-clash-claims-3-lives/ Sun, 03 Mar 2024 20:24:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2364267 There is an uneasy calm in the Tontokrom community in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti region following the death of three in a clash between the youth of the area and security men protecting a mining concession.

A resident was allegedly shot dead during a confrontation with the private security operatives on Saturday, March 2.

This infuriated the youth who launched a reprisal attack and lynched two of the alleged attackers.

Giving more details, a resident said; “We saw two branded Asanko Mines vehicles and four non-branded ones occupied by machomen in the community. Some of the youth went closer to the vehicles to hoot at the occupants and before we realized the machomen had started firing gunshots. One person was hit by a stray bullet and died on the spot.

“We were left with no choice but to also attack them. The vehicles sped off but two machomen fell on the ground. They were lynched”.

The altercation comes on the back of long-standing tensions between Tontokrom residents and Asanko Gold Mines over the latter’s concession security measures.

For years, the local youth, driven by rampant unemployment, have turned to illegal mining activities, which have encroached on some fringes of Asanko’s legitimate lands.

However, allegations of excessive force by military personnel and hired security to repel these incursions have worsened the situation.

Subsequently, the residents on Friday, March 1, 2024, staged a protest to demand the establishment of a Community Mining Scheme to end the banter.

The confrontation on Saturday, however, turned bloody between the residents and the private security personnel of Asanko Mines.

The bodies have since been conveyed by the police and deposited at the morgue.

Meanwhile, the District Security Council has scheduled a meeting with community leaders and Asanko Gold to outline measures in resolving the impasse.

The basketball competition between the two schools turned bloody after St Mary’s Senior High School won the competition for the first time.

Students of GSTS, according to reports, started pelting the winners of the game with stones in reaction to what they say was extreme provocation from the students of St. Mary’s Senior High who were chanting war songs after the competition.

The clashes also left a student of GSTS sustaining a deep cut on the forehead.

The Inter-school competitions have currently been halted by the Regional Education Service following the clashes.

Felix Ankrah, the Senior House Master of St Mary’s Senior High School, who spoke to Class News, said the police have commenced investigations into the matter.

Residents of Bibiani and Anhwiaso, both districts at Sehwi, clashed during a ritual performance to allow Asante Gold Corporation to commence operation.

The districts were divided over which authority to lead the ritual performance and youth of Bibiani prevented the Ahwiaso traditional area from the cleansing rite at the River Mensin to pave way for the large scale mining.

The Bibiani youth argued that if the rituals were performed by the people from Anhwiaso, the youth from Bibiani would not get jobs from the company.

The challenge quickly degenerated into a heated argument between the youth and the delegation from Anhwiaso Traditional Area, with the former insisting it is the chief of Sehwi Bibiani who has the right to perform the rituals.

In a heated argument, some of the youth were hit by stray bullets. Two were left in critical condition.

Three others were treated and discharged for gunshot wounds while scores sustained wounds and bruises from machetes and stone pelting.

Information gathered by Adom News indicated that one Ibrahim Adams, who was among those in critical condition at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, has been confirmed dead.

According to the sources, the deceased, a Pragya rider, was not involved in the clash, but was plying the route after dropping off some passengers.

NPP youth factions in Tamale clash https://www.adomonline.com/npp-youth-factions-in-tamale-clash/ Wed, 22 Dec 2021 10:15:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2061263 There was prolonged gunfire between rival New Patriotic Party (NPP) youth groups last night in Tamale near the West Hospital.

Eyewitnesses in the area said the shooting lasted close to 30 minutes.

One eyewitness, who spoke to JoyNews on condition of anonymity, said they saw two persons on a motorbike arrive at an office purported to be for the Invisible Forces in the Tamale Metropolis, wielding weapons. They later started firing gunshots.

According to the witness, occupants of the office immediately took to their heels.

The person said more people joined in the shooting into the office and vandalised property in the area.

The eyewitness said the misunderstanding is believed to have started in Kumasi at the NPP National Delegates’ Conference.

Osman Yaro, who spoke to JoyNews on behalf of the Task Force, one of the rival groups, said one of their members who is known as ‘See me’ was accused of being an armed robber in Kumasi by the Invisible Forces and subsequently subjected to beating.

He said seven members of their group were arrested but later released.

According to Yaro, the Tamale Invisible Forces connived with their counterparts in Kumasi to attack their leader. He added that some media portals published reports that seven armed robbers were arrested at the conference.

These stories he said, mentioned members of the Task Force as the robbers, which did not sit well with them.

He contended that the attack on the office of the Invisible Forces was undertaken by members of the group, “the Invincible Forces themselves were the ones firing guns.”

But Mohamed Alhsassan, who spoke on behalf of the Invisible Forces, denied claims that they accused the Task Force commander of being an armed robber.

He referred to his group as the party’s security.

Mr Alhassan added that the Task Force group had lobbied some party supporters to join them from Tamale to root for Alan Kyerematen as flagbearer during the party’s delegates’ conference.

ALSO READ:

He said when they arrived at the conference in Kumasi, they forced themselves through security and in the process some of them were arrested.

Mr Alhassan said they identified some of their members as part of the security in Kumas, the reason they launched an attack on them last night.

Northern Regional Communications Director, Mohammed Sharif, said the matter has been reported to the party’s regional hierarchy, this, he would not comment further.

But some supporters of the NPP are attributing it to the factions that are emerging due to the pending flagbearership contest.

Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Crime Officer, Superintendent Bernard Baba Ananga, who confirmed the incident said the Police are still gathering information.

Gunshot fired as police clash with ‘trotro’ drivers, conductors at Shiashie [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/gunshot-fired-as-police-clash-with-trotro-drivers-conductors-at-shiashie-video/ Wed, 15 Dec 2021 18:52:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2058850

There was uneasy calm at the Shiashie bus terminal after policemen clashed with trotro drivers and their conductors on Wednesday.

The security personnel stormed the area to supervise a demolition exercise that was being carried out by the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly.

However, the news came as shock to drivers and their mates who say they had been at the site for over 20 years and were hesitant.

This led to a chaotic scene during which the policemen faced off with them amid the firing of gunshots.

But speaking on their action, the Vice Chairman of the Shiashie Drivers Association, Jacob Taylor, said the Okponglo chief gave out the land to them years back.

They, therefore, did not expect to be evicted in this manner though they found out recently it had been sold out for redevelopment into a shopping mall.

“We were set for work this morning when they stormed here and asked that we vacate the place but at the same time, the entrance was locked so we couldn’t even move out and were held hostage,” he narrated.

Mr Taylor on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen explained they visited the chief to register their displeasure but were told he wasn’t aware of any sale.

He lamented their fate now hangs as breadwinners of their families as no provisions have been made for them.

“About 10 have been arrested and taken to the East Legon Police station while others were manhandled,” he claimed.

Narrating details of the incident, assembly member for Asemasa electoral area, Jude Kamfa, said the brawl was triggered by a mobile phone theft case that happened on July 29, 2021.

According to him, some young men from Kamfakrom allegedly attacked a woman from Ampatano at her farm and stole her phone, however, they were apprehended and sent to the chief’s palace.

He said the chief then called him to have the suspects picked by the police, but he suggested that the suspects be brought to the police station since he was not available. He said he was told residents of Kamfakrom had blocked the road which leads to Ampatano town preventing the arrest of the suspects.

He said he then proceeded to report the incident to the Agona Nkwanta police commander but was told there was no police car available and so a taxi was picked accompanied by five policemen. He noted they were able to pick these suspects and returned them to the town on bail.

He further revealed that upon his return to the town later that day, he was attacked by residents of Kamfakrom who stoned him and damaged the windscreen of the car he was in.

On Saturday, July 31, 2021, he said a youth from Kamfakrom threatened to beat anyone who would return to the Kamfakrom School. In retaliation, the youth of Ampatano pursued the youth of Kamfakrom which ended in five persons from Ampatano sustaining gun injuries.

He further noted that although the Agona Nkwanta Police command, as well as the SWAT, visited the town, residents of Kamfakrom remained adamant as they blocked the road preventing commercial vehicles from operating.

Mr Kamfa revealed the towns remained unstable as of Sunday, August 1, 2021.

Trump impeachment: Senate leaders spar over trial https://www.adomonline.com/trump-impeachment-senate-leaders-spar-over-trial/ Tue, 24 Dec 2019 15:49:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1735768 McConnell

Republican and Democratic leaders in the United States (US) Senate have clashed over the rules of President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial.

Democrats want assurances witnesses and documents will be allowed, to enable what they term a fair trial.

Top Democrat Chuck Schumer says the recent release of an “explosive” email about aid to Ukraine is a reminder of why openness is necessary.

Republican leader Mitch McConnell says he has not ruled out witnesses.

But he stopped short of agreeing ahead of time to take testimony during the trial.

President Trump was formally impeached by the House last week for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

He is the third president in US history to be impeached. However, he is unlikely to be removed from office, as his Republican party has a majority in the Senate, where the trial will be held as stipulated in the US Constitution.

Mr Trump is accused of pressuring Ukraine’s president to start an investigation into his political rival, Democratic presidential front runner, Joe Biden.

Mr Trump is accused of doing this by withholding military aid and making a White House visit contingent on co-operation.

The trial is expected to begin next month, after the holiday break.

But Democrats have so far refused to hand over the articles of impeachment voted through in the House – the charges – to the Senate.

They want assurances from Mr McConnell that their chosen witnesses – at least four current and former White House aides with knowledge of the Ukraine affair – will be allowed to testify.

What did Mr McConnell say?

“We haven’t ruled out witnesses,” Mr McConnell told Fox News on Monday.

He suggested holding a trial similar to former President Bill Clinton’s in 1999, in which senators decided which witnesses to call after opening arguments and a written question period.

Mr McConnell accused Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi of holding “an absurd position” for delaying handing over the impeachment articles and said she is “apparently trying to tell us how to run the trial.”

“You know, I’m not anxious to have this trial, so if she wants to hold on to the papers, go right ahead.

“Look, we’re at an impasse. We can’t do anything until the Speaker sends the papers over, so everyone enjoy the holidays,” the Kentucky Republican added.

What are Democrats saying?

They renewed their demand for witnesses over the weekend after an email emerged suggesting the White House sought to freeze aid to Ukraine just 91 minutes after Mr Trump spoke to President Volodymyr Zelensky by phone in July. That call is at the centre of the allegations against Mr Trump – charges he denies.

Chuck Schumer said he and his Republican counterpart remain at an impasse after holding a “cordial” meeting on Thursday to discuss trial rules.

During a news conference in his home state of New York on Sunday, Mr Schumer said Republicans “have come up with no good reason why there shouldn’t be witnesses, why there shouldn’t be documents”.

Media captionChuck Schumer – “Not a single good argument why these witnesses shouldn’t testify”

He added: “We don’t know what the witnesses will say. We don’t know how the documents will read. They might exonerate President Trump or they might further incriminate him. But the truth should come out on something as important as an impeachment.”

Democrats argue that Republicans will not act as impartial jurors during the impeachment trial, after Mr McConnell pledged last week to work in “total co-ordination” with the White House.

Meanwhile, House of Representatives officials raised the possibility of a second impeachment if new evidence of obstruction by Mr Trump came to light. The suggestion came in court papers filed by Democrats as they seek the testimony of White House counsel Don McGahn.

Assembly member for Kokomlemle in the Accra Metropolitan District, Moses Abor, has accused Nigerian traders of fueling the clash between Ghanaian and Nigerian traders in the area on Monday.

Mr Abor, who was at the Tiptoe Lane where the clashes happened to witness things for himself, alleged that the Nigerian traders were armed and ready to attack their Ghanaian counterparts.

“You can go to the police and check the records; any assault case you hear began with the Nigerians,” he said.

Mr Abore, speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Tuesday said the situation would have gotten out of hand but for the timely intervention of the police and the leadership of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA).

“The Ghanaian traders feel the Nigerians are taking over the trade in Tiptoe Lane, and they are not happy about it,” he said.

On Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Thursday, New Patriotic Party Member Parliament for Tarkwa Nsuaem, George Mireku Duker and National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Amenfi West, Eric Afful, during a debate on the true state of roads in the country, dared each other to show proof of each other’s ‘good work done’ in the road sector.

Mr Afful was of the view that the cancelling of most road contracts by the President on assumption of office was due to his government’s inability to provide mobilisation fees needed by local contractors to enable them continue with road projects started under former President John Mahama.

His counterpart, Mr Duker, however, denied the allegation and requested to see evidence of the so-called “unprecedented infrastructural projects”, particularly with roads construction as touted by the previous government.

MPs clash over breast sucking https://www.adomonline.com/mps-clash-over-breast-sucking/ Thu, 24 Oct 2019 12:50:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1715357 As part of contribution to a statement in Parliament to commemorate October as a breast cancer month, a female Member of Parliament (MP) called on men who like sucking women’s breast to alert those women of any unusual discharge from their breasts so that they could seek immediate medical attention.

The call by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legislator for Krachi West, Helen Ntoso, in Parliament yesterday generated heated debate, with most of the male MPs supporting her call while others disagreed.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Effiaduase/Asokore, Nana Ayew Afriyie, who is a medical doctor, said contrary to certain beliefs that sucking of breast could contribute to the risk of one developing breast cancer, breast sucking rather helps to prevent any risk of breast cancer.

“Mr. Speaker, whether breastfeeding by babies or men sucking their partners’ breasts, the sucking of breast is very good for the women because it rather helps to prevent breast cancer,” Dr. Ayew said to a huge ‘Yea! Yea!’ from the male MPs in the chamber.

The NPP MP for Effutu, Alex Afenyo-Markin, said it is not only men who suck the breast of women but some women also suck men’s breast during love-making and that the women must also alert men of any discharge from their breasts since men could also develop breast cancer.

The NDC MP for Daffiama/Bussie/Issa, Dr. Sebastian Sandaare, said there is no medical proof that breast sucking is a preventive measure but the actual medical advice is for men to help their partners to periodically examine their breasts to ascertain if there is any difference.

The NDC MP for Klottey-Korley, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, said it was important for all married women or women in relationships to allow their partners to examine their breasts for them, adding that apart from that the women themselves should take interest in always examining their own breasts to see if there are changes in them.

She, however, said that during menstruation, the texture and size of the breast change and so the women must accordingly know how their breasts respond to their menstruation cycles.

The Deputy Majority Leader, Adwoa Safo, NPP MP for Dome Kwabenya, and the NPP MP for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, called on companies and institutions to have special places reserved for breastfeeding by workers who are fresh mothers.

They, therefore, pleaded with the Speaker to let an institution like Parliament set the pace by providing such a place for female MPs who become fresh mothers and come to Parliament to work.

The Speaker, Prof. Mike Oquaye, therefore directed the Clerk of Parliament to immediately find an appropriate place to serve that purpose in Parliament so that female MPs who become new mothers can breastfeed their babies while attending to the work of the House.

The MPs were, however, unanimous that there was the need for a special fund dedicated to the treatment of breast cancer since its treatment is very expensive.

The Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, MP for Dormaa West, said that the Health Ministry was in the process of securing effective funding by the NHIA for the free treatment of breast cancer for women on NHIS.

An eye witness in Mankarigu, a nearby community, confirmed to Joy News that the violence was triggered by a misunderstanding over the construction of a mosque.

Details of the violent disturbance were still unfolding but multiple sources told Joy News that, shootings started after some young men transporting blocks to the village for the mosque project were resisted.

Three of the injured victims have been treated and discharged and one has been referred to Walewale, a staff at Mankarigu health centre has also confirmed to Joy News.

An official at the health centre, who refused to be named, said the victim who was referred suffered skull fracture and was in serious condition.

“We have received four casualties and one has been referred to Walewale. The ones we’re attending are cutlasses but I heard there was a gunshot but I didn’t see it”, according to the health staff,

“His own… it seems it has even gotten to the skull, so we said it’s beyond our level, but we were able to manage for them to move further,” the anonymous health official said.

Residents of this village have been shapely divided after the creation of the Savannah and North East Regions.

Originally, under the North Gonja district of the Savannah Region, some residents of Lukula and several others in the area, including Mankarigu, have been protesting to join the West Mamprusi municipal in the North East Region.

Over 40 communities more, all inhabited by minority tribes including Tamplumas the Tamplumas, are in this protest to be added to the North East Region.

Tensions have escalated in recent months between the Gonjas in Daboya and Mamprusis in the Sor Traditional area in Walewale after the chief of Daboya attempted to install chiefs in some of the communities already occupied by Mamprusi chiefs.

It became a full-blown territorial dispute between the Yagbonwura and Naayiri two months ago after a meeting with a Gonja delegation at the Naayiri’s palace in Nalerigu ended inconclusively.

Residents who are protesting to join the North East Region cite social, political and economic deprivations but the Gonjas maintain the land belonged to them and would not accept any breakaway.

Opuni’s lawyer ‘clashes’ with prosecution witness over job title https://www.adomonline.com/opunis-lawyer-clashes-with-prosecution-witness-over-job-title/ Tue, 13 Nov 2018 07:14:48 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=1473671 Counsel for former CEO of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr Stephen Kwabena Opuni, who is standing trial over an alleged Gh¢271.3 million fertiliser scandal, has accused a prosecution witness of lying about his job title.

The witness, Dr Alfred Arthur, in his evidence-in-chief on October 29, 2018, told the Accra High Court that he was the acting Head of the Soil Science Division of Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG).

The witness continued with his evidence-in-chief on November 2, 2018.

Dr Arthur, in his evidence-in-chief, testified that he tested the Lithovit Foliar Fertiliser (LFF), the said fertiliser which is the subject matter of the trial.

But during cross-examination on Monday November 12, lawyer Samuel Cudjoe sought to make a case that the witness was not the acting Head of the Soil Science Division of CRIG as he had presented himself.

Counsel was particular that as of November 2, 2018 when the witness appeared before the court to continue with his evidence-in-chief, he was no longer the acting head of the Soil Science Division of CRIG, but the witness failed to inform the court.

In his response, Dr Arthur refuted counsel’s assertion and stated that he was not aware that as of November 2, 2018, he was no longer the acting Head.

Below are excerpts of the cross-examination

Mr Cudjoe: At the last adjourned date (November 2, 2018) when you gave your evidence-in-chief, you knew you were no more the acting Head?

Dr Arthur: No my Lord, I never knew at the last adjourned date.

Mr Cudjoe: I am putting it to you that you knew you were not the acting Head and you are being economical with the truth.

Dr Arthur: My Lord, I did not know that.

Appointment letter

Mr Cudjoe then asked the witness if he was given an appointment letter when he was appointed as the acting Head, to which Dr Arthur replied in the negative.

Counsel submitted that in CRIG, all appointments, including those in acting capacities, were communicated to the appointees in writing.

READ: Angry Menzgold customers to seize properties of NAM 1, Becca, Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy

But Dr Arthur replied that was not so in all cases and that in his case, he was asked to act as the Head when the substantive Head, Mr A.A Afrifa, went on retirement.

Mr Cudjoe then accused the witness of testifying against his client with the sole aim of getting his appointment as the acting Head confirmed.

“That is not correct,’’ Dr Arthur responded.

The cross-examination will continue on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at the court, presided over by Justice Clemence Honyenuga, a justice of the Court of Appeal with additional responsibility as a High Court judge.

Case against Opuni & Agongo

In March, 2018, the Attorney-General (A-G) charged Dr Opuni and a businessman, Seidu Agongo, the CEO of Agricult Ghana Limited, with 27 counts.

MORE: Ex-UBS trader Kweku Adoboli detained again prior to deportation to Ghana

It is the contention of the A-G that Dr Opuni, during his tenure as COCOBOD CEO (November 2013 to January 2017), breached laid down procedures in procurement and other laws that led the state to lose GH¢271.3 million in the alleged fertiliser scandal and the distribution of substandard fertiliser to cocoa farmers

Agongo is also alleged to have used fraudulent means to sell substandard fertiliser to COCOBOD for onward distribution to cocoa farmers.

The two accused persons have denied any wrongdoing and have pleaded not guilty to all the 27 charges.

They are currently on bail in the sum of GH¢300,000 each.
