The victim, identified only by his local nickname ‘Taller,’ a 50-year-old mason, was found dead in a horrific state, his body brutally mutilated with certain organs and tissues removed.

The chilling incident occurred inside an uncompleted building where ‘Taller’ lived. He was reportedly ambushed and killed by an unknown assailant or assailants who carefully harvested parts of his body.

Local authorities and investigators have classified the case as a suspected ritual killing, citing the nature of the injuries. Police data indicates that such crimes remain a serious concern in the region.

Assemblyman for the Domeabra Electoral Area, Joseph Akrashie, who has been working closely with the police, described the discovery in an interview with Adom News correspondent Kofi Adjei.

“Taller is well-known in the area, and we are shocked about what has happened to him,” Akrashie said, expressing the community’s disbelief.

He went on to share disturbing details of the police’s preliminary findings. “Investigations by the police indicate that the suspects cut the deceased’s left heel and thigh and removed all the veins in that part,” he revealed.

The precision of the mutilation suggested a deliberate extraction of tissue, pointing to possible ritual motives. The removed parts are believed to have been intended for use in ‘juju’ or spiritual practices often associated with the quest for wealth or power.

The Ghana Police Service Homicide Unit has since taken over the investigation. The body has been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary in Accra for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death and gather forensic evidence on the weapon used.

However, no arrests have been made yet, heightening tension and fear among residents.

Assemblyman Akrashie confirmed that the perpetrators remain at large, a situation that has left the community deeply anxious.

Some residents, gripped by fear, have appealed to the government and the Inspector General of Police to beef up security in the area to prevent further attacks.

“We don’t know who the next victim will be,” one resident said.

Okada rider found dead with slit throat at Kwabenya https://www.adomonline.com/okada-rider-found-dead-with-slit-throat-at-kwabenya/ Sun, 07 Sep 2025 07:57:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2575832 A wave of fear has gripped the Kwabenya Comet community in Accra following the gruesome murder of an Okada rider, the second such incident in just a few months.

The victim, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, was found with his throat slit in what residents fear is becoming a disturbing pattern of targeted killings. The discovery has intensified anxiety in a community still reeling from a similar incident earlier this year.

The latest murder mirrors the brutal killing of Immigration Officer Stephen Amoah, who was slain under nearly identical circumstances in the same area.

Residents say the repeated acts of violence have left them living in constant fear while raising serious concerns about the effectiveness of security measures in the neighbourhood.

So far, no arrests have been made, but the Ghana Police Service has launched investigations into the case.

With its rapid urbanisation and high population density, Kwabenya presents unique challenges for law enforcement, as criminal activities often go undetected in its maze of unlit streets and densely packed settlements.

The recent murders have sparked renewed public calls for urgent police intervention to restore calm and bring an end to what locals describe as a reign of terror in their community.

Four journalists among 15 killed in Israeli strike on hospital – Gaza officials https://www.adomonline.com/four-journalists-among-15-killed-in-israeli-strike-on-hospital-gaza-officials/ Mon, 25 Aug 2025 12:12:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2570825 At least 15 people, including four journalists working for the international media, are reported to have been killed in an Israeli strike on a hospital in the southern Gaza Strip.

A Reuters cameraman and an Associated Press (AP) journalist were among those killed in the attack at Nasser Hospital. Another journalist is reported to have worked for Al Jazeera.

Several people were killed in an initial strike, and others in a second which happened as rescuers attended the scene, the Hamas-run Civil Defence said.

The Israeli military said it had carried out an attack on the hospital and an investigation had been ordered. It added that it “does not target journalists as such”.

The Hamas-run health ministry said people were killed when a missile hit the fourth floor, followed by a second missile on the same spot when rescuers arrived, AP reported.

In video from the scene, a doctor standing at an entrance to the hospital – the main one in southern Gaza – holds up bloodied clothes to show journalists following the first strike. Suddenly there is a blast, sending people running for cover as glass shatters. A man injured by the blast is seen trying to drag himself to safety.

In other footage, white and grey smoke can be seen billowing from an upper level of the hospital where damage is apparent. Outside, people are running and shouting amid chaos, as ambulance horns can be heard.

Reuters news agency said its cameraman, Husam al-Masri, was among those killed. AP said Mariam Dagga, a freelance journalist working for it, was also killed. The news agency said it was “shocked and saddened” by the 33-year-old’s death.

The others are said to have been Mohammed Salameh working for Al Jazeera, and photographer Muath Abu Taha. US TV network NBC said Taha did not work for it, as had been initially reported.

The Civil Defence said 15 people were killed, including one of its members, AFP news agency reported.

Monday’s attack comes two weeks after six journalists, including four from Al Jazeera, were killed in an Israeli targeted attack near al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.

The UN’s human rights office condemned that attack, calling it a grave breach of international law.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had targeted Anas al-Sharif, a prominent Al Jazeera reporter, alleging he had “served as the head of a terrorist cell in Hamas”.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a leading body which promotes press freedom, said Israel had failed to provide evidence to back up its allegations.

The latest deaths brings the number of journalists killed in Gaza since the start of the war there in October 2023 to about 200.

The war was triggered by the Hamas-led attack on Israel on 7 October, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others taken to Gaza as hostages.

Israel responded with a massive military offensive, which has killed more than 62,686 Palestinians, according to figures from Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, which the UN considers reliable.

The suspect in the attack at Or Tor Kor Market is also dead, police in Thailand’s capital confirmed.

Local media have reported that some of those killed are security guards.

The Or Tor Kor market is well known for high quality fresh fruit and seafood.

Gun ownership rates in Thailand are relatively high for the region and mass shooting incidents are not common, but the country has seen several deadly incidents in recent years.

In 2023, a 14-year-old boy killed two people and injured five others in a shooting at a luxury shopping mall in the centre of Bangkok.

An ex-policeman killed at least 37 people, most of them children, in a gun and knife attack at a childcare centre in in Nong Bua Lamphu province in north-east Thailand in October 2022.

In 2020, a soldier killed 29 people and injured dozens more in the city of Nakhon Ratchasima.

Fifty-six killed, dozens trapped in India landslides https://www.adomonline.com/fifty-six-killed-dozens-trapped-in-india-landslides/ Tue, 30 Jul 2024 10:41:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2427442 At least 56 people have been killed and dozens are feared trapped after heavy rains triggered massive landslides in the southern Indian state of Kerala.

The landslides struck hilly areas in Wayanad district in the early hours of Tuesday.

Rescue operations are under way, but are being hindered by heavy rains and the collapse of a crucial bridge.

“We will be able to assess the extent of the damage only after a few hours,” state minister AK Saseendran told BBC Hindi.

India’s army said it had sent more than 200 personnel to the area to assist security forces in search and rescue efforts.

Local hospitals are treating at least 70 injured people, and around 250 people have been rescued and shifted to rescue camps so far.

Apart from the 36 confirmed deaths in Wayanad, nine bodies have been found in the Chaliyar river, which flows into neighbouring Malappuram district.

Wayanad, a hilly district which is part of the Western Ghats mountain range, is prone to landslides during the monsoon season.

The landslides have hit several areas in the district, including Mundakkai, Attamala, Chooralmala and Kunhome.

Videos on social media showed muddy water gushing through unpaved streets and forested areas, washing away homes and leaving people and vehicles stranded.

A bridge connecting Chooralmala to Mundakkai and Attamala has collapsed, isolating the two places and making it difficult for rescue personnel to reach trapped families.

Rashid Padikkalparamban, a resident, told Reuters news agency that at least three landslides had hit the area around midnight, washing away the bridge.

State and national disaster relief teams are conducting rescue operations. Several locals too have been helping out.

Mr Saseendran also said the army and air force have been asked to airlift trapped families and to build a temporary bridge.

Raghavan C Arunamala, a local, described the horrifying scenes unfolding in the area.

“I saw a man trapped in the debris shouting for help. Firefighters and rescue workers have been trying to reach him for the last few hours,” he said.

“We fear hundreds of people are trapped inside the villages,” he added.

Wayanad district and neighbouring areas are on alert due to the forecast of heavy rains.

Schools and colleges have been closed in 10 of 14 districts.

In 2019, 17 people had died after a landslide hit Puthumala in Wayanad, around 10km from the areas currently affected.

Tuesday’s tragedy came up in India’s parliament with Vice-President Jagdeep Singh Dhankar – the chairman of the upper house – calling it a “very painful situation”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he had spoken to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and assured the federal government’s help in relief efforts.

Mr Modi also announced compensation of 200,000 rupees ($2,388; £1,857) to the victims’ families and 50,000 rupees to the injured.

Bishop stabbed during sermon https://www.adomonline.com/bishop-stabbed-during-sermon/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 12:25:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2381173 A bishop and several other people have been stabbed during a sermon in Sydney that was being streamed online, local media report.

The incident reportedly happened on Monday night in the suburb of Wakeley.

Police responded to reports that a number of people had been stabbed but said none of their injuries were life-threatening.

They added that a man had been arrested and was assisting them with their inquiries.

It was not immediately clear what weapon was used in the attack, which is reported to have happened at the Christ The Good Shepherd Church.

In the livestreamed video on the sermon, a man dressed in dark clothing can be seen approaching the bishop before appearing to strike him.

Several other people then attempt to intervene and screams of horror can be heard.

“The injured people suffered non-life threatening injuries and are being treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics,” police said in a statement.

The community has been asked to avoid the area.

The stabbing comes days after six people were killed at a shopping mall in the same city. The attacker was later shot dead by a police officer.

There is no suggestion that the two events are linked.

Amasaman: 12-year-old boy brutally killed, tongue removed; Neighbours arrested [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/amasaman-12-year-old-boy-brutally-killed-tongue-removed-neighbours-arrested-video/ Wed, 17 May 2023 14:39:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2250563 Residents of Amasaman have been thrown into a state of shock after a 12-year-old boy was reportedly murdered and had his tongue removed in a gruesome manner.

Peter Osafo, the father of the victim, Justice Akakpo Mensah, recounted the incident in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Wednesday.

Mr Osafo explained that the unfortunate event took place last Sunday while they were getting ready for church.

He said: “I was cooking with him, and I asked him to sweep while I attended to the food. He was sitting beside me, and whenever I needed him, I would call him. I didn’t even see where he went. The food was ready, but he was nowhere to be found.”

His concern grew when they realised that time was passing without any sign of Justice.

Mr Osafo continued: “Around 3pm, we started to panic and initiated a search for him.”

During the search, another group alerted them to the discovery of a boy’s body wrapped in a sack.

Mr Osafo said: “While searching, we were informed about a body found with its tongue removed, wrapped in a sack near Pokuase. We hurried to the police station, and they confirmed it to us. Later, we went to the location where the body was found, and a man informed us that some individuals had dropped the body behind someone’s house. Fortunately, a man had seen the vehicle that dropped the body and took a picture of it. We later realised that it belonged to our neighbours.”

Mr Osafo expressed disbelief as he stated that he had no issues with the neighbours and that they were in good terms with his family. He wondered why they would commit such a heinous crime and kill his son.

When the police showed him pictures of his son, Mr Osafo saw that Justice’s tongue had been removed, and he was wearing the same shirt he had last seen him in.

The main suspect in the case is the neighbour, who, when confronted, claimed that one of his sons accidentally shot Justice while they were playing.

Mr Osafo found this explanation implausible since they hadn’t heard any gunshots, given the close proximity of their houses.

Mary Essirifi, the mother of the deceased, who could not hold back her tears, during the same interview mentioned that they had a close relationship with their neighbours, who would often buy foodstuffs from her.

She said, “my son would frequently go there to help them with their animals, and they were regular customers of mine. We had no issues with them, so why would they brutally kill my son?”

Currently, the neighbours and their entire family have been apprehended by the police and are being held at the Criminal Investigations Department headquarters for further investigations.

World’s oldest death row inmate killed by lethal injection for murdering police officer https://www.adomonline.com/worlds-oldest-death-row-inmate-killed-by-lethal-injection-for-murdering-police-officer/ Fri, 22 Apr 2022 13:04:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2107499 The world’s oldest death row inmate has been put to death at a US prison for murdering a police officer.

Carl Wayne Buntion, 78, murdered police officer James Irby in 1990 and was sentenced to execution, spending three decades waiting on death row amid several unsuccessful appeals.

Lawyers for Buntion had tried unsuccessfully to stop his date with a lethal injection by arguing the punishment was “cruel and unusual”.

Despite those pleas, he was executed at about 7 pm local time on Thursday night at a prison in Texas.

In a final statement shared by local media reporters, he said he had remorse for the killing and wrote: “I am ready to go.”

Buntion was found guilty of shooting and killing Houston police officer James Irby, 37, in 1990.

The killer, who had an extensive criminal record already, shot the officer when he and a friend were pulled over for a minor traffic offence.

Buntion, the passenger, exited the car while the driver and officer were talking and shot him once in the head and twice in the back before being apprehended.

He was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death in 1991.

Records showed he was in ill health with a list of medical conditions, including hepatitis C, cirrhosis and a chronic liver disease.

Wheelchair-bound Buntion also had to be housed in a ground floor cell owing to severe vertigo.

There had been several unsuccessful legal efforts to stop the death sentence over the years.

In 2009 it was deemed “unconstitutional” as jurors were not allowed to hear mitigating evidence and it was vacated.

Then in 2012 in a retrial he was again sentenced to death with a later appeal denied.

Buntion’s lawyers appealed this decision in October 2021, but this was denied by the US Supreme Court.

A petition for clemency previously said: “Mr. Buntion is a frail, elderly man who requires specialised care to perform basic functions.

“He is not a threat to anyone in prison and will not be a threat to anyone in prison if his sentence is reduced to a lesser penalty.

“During the 31 years he has been incarcerated under a sentence of death, he has been cited for only three disciplinary infractions, and he has not been cited for any infraction whatsoever for the last twenty-three years.”

Earlier, news of his impending death was welcomed by the family of officer Irby, including his widow Maura Irby.

Speaking to KPRC 2 , she said the family can now move forward, saying: “I just found out this morning that Carl Buntion is being executed. It’s been 30 years. We’ve been waiting for this.

“I wish James was here to see this. It is good to close the chapter on my husband’s murder. “We can now put this away.”

How 43 Ghanaian peacekeepers were killed by Congolese army https://www.adomonline.com/how-43-ghanaian-peacekeepers-were-killed-by-congolese-army/ Tue, 28 Apr 2020 10:59:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1785427 Today in History, exactly 59 years ago, on April 28, 1961, 43 Ghanaian peacekeepers were killed in one of the United Nation’s (UN) deadliest missions by the Congolese army at Port Franqui, Kasai, Congo.

Today in History, exactly 59 years ago, on April 28, 1961, 43 Ghanaian peacekeepers were killed in one of the UN’s deadliest missions by the Congolese army at Port Franqui, Kasai, Congo.

April 28, 1961, is definitely a day that Ghanaians, and not just Congolese, will remember. Ghana, then just a four-year-old independent nation, contributed soldiers to the UN’s aim of keeping the peace in Congo.

The United Nations Operation in the Congo (Opération des Nations Unies au Congo, or ONUC), which took place in the Republic of the Congo from July 1960 until June 1964, marked a milestone in the history of United Nations peacekeeping in terms of the responsibilities it had to assume, the size of its area of operation and the manpower involved.

Ghana has been contributing troops and police to UN peace operations since the early 1960s. Since their first participation in ONUC, over 80,000 Ghanaian military, police, and civilian personnel have served in various capacities in more than 30 UN missions.

In most of these operations there have been instances where weapons have been lost either through attacks by hostile armed elements or through careless mishandling of weapons by peacekeepers. A few examples will suffice, including losses of experienced peace keepers by UN troops from countries other than Ghana. By far, the highest number of weapons and ammunition lost by Ghanaian troops during peace operations occurred in the UN operations in the Congo.

This was during the Port Franqui shooting incident, which culminated in the unfortunate massacre of 43 Ghanaian peacekeepers (military personnel) and two of their British officers in April 28, 1961. Some of the Ghanaian troops were alleged to have drowned while attempting to escape the shooting.

The incident is reported to have happened when the Congolese interior minister, who was visiting Port Franqui on 27 April, publicly criticided the local Armée nationale congolaise (Congolese National Army, or ANC) forces of being anti-Lulua and a source of unrest in the ethnic conflict rocking northern Kasai. He threatened to have them disarmed by the UN forces if this did not change.

The following day, the ONUC garrison at Port Franqui was attacked by ANC troops, who thought it shared the pro-Lulua bias of the interior minister. Forty-seven UN troops (Ghanaian, Swedish, and British) were killed, some of them after they had been disarmed.

Ever since 43 Ghanaian peacekeepers were killed, Ghana’s willingness to partake in peacekeeping efforts has not been affected by its most unfortunate loss in international warfare. The country remains the UN’s most preferred peacekeeping partner on the continent.
