The family announced that wake-keeping will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, followed by a lying in state on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Asuofua Town Park.

This will be followed by the burial service at Asuofua on the same day, with interment at the Asuofua Cemetery shortly after.

Final funeral rites will also take place later on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the Asuofua Town Park. Activities will continue on Sunday, May 10, 2026, with a thanksgiving service at Sokoban Ampayoo, before a family gathering is held at the Asuofua Town Park to conclude the funeral.

Family members explained that the arrangements are aimed at giving the celebrated musician a befitting farewell, while offering fans, colleagues and the general public an opportunity to pay their last respects.

Yaw Sarpong is remembered not only for his music but also for his humility and dedication to ministry, qualities that endeared him to many over the years.

He passed on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Emena Hospital, where he was receiving treatment.

The events will begin with a wake-keeping on Friday, May 8, 2026, followed by a lying-in-state on Saturday, May 9, at the Asuofua Town Park. The burial service and final funeral rites will also take place at the park.

A thanksgiving service is scheduled for Sunday, May 10, at Sokoban-Ampayoo, after which mourners will return to Asuofua Town Park at 12:00 pm for further proceedings.

The family has requested that attendees adhere to a dress code: red and black for Saturday’s burial, and white and black for Sunday’s thanksgiving service.

Presenting the amount on behalf of the union, MUSIGA representatives expressed their condolences to the bereaved family and acknowledged Yaw Sarpong’s immense contribution to the growth of gospel music in Ghana.

They noted that while the initial donation was symbolic, the union remains committed to providing further support during the funeral.

Yaw Sarpong was widely revered for his powerful gospel messages and timeless songs that resonated deeply with audiences across Ghana and beyond, earning him admiration and a lasting place in the country’s gospel music history.

Details of his final funeral rites are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

The event follows his death on January 20, 2026, at age 66 after a prolonged illness.

His passing was confirmed by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, and has since drawn tributes from across Ghana’s gospel fraternity and beyond.

Yaw Sarpong’s death has left the Asomafo family and the wider gospel community in mourning.

The loss came only weeks after the passing of Maame Tiwaa, a long-serving member of the group, deepening the grief within the Asomafo and gospel industry circles.

The February 19 observance is expected to bring together family members, fellow musicians, clergy, and fans to celebrate a career that shaped Akan gospel music for more than four decades.

Sarpong founded the Asomafo Band in 1986 while in Liberia and later relocated to Ghana, where the group grew into a respected national gospel institution.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Kasiebo is Tasty, Bishop Adu extended condolences to the bereaved family and recounted Sarpong’s long battle with illness.

“He wasn’t completely healed. In 2011, he was struck by a sickness that left him paralyzed, but through the grace of God, he recovered. In 2020, he fell sick again and had been fighting it ever since,” he said.

Bishop Adu explained that disagreements arose between himself and Sarpong’s children when they insisted on taking their father from the church’s care facility a day after the death of legendary backing vocalist Maame Adwoa Tiwaa.

“I wasn’t happy because the specialist and I were closely monitoring his condition and administering medication. But we could not stop them because he is their relative,” he added.

According to Bishop Adu, after Sarpong was taken home, he required regular oxygen treatments and struggled to eat during the last days of his life.

He said he visited Sarpong at home a week after the move and advised that he return to the facility, which has nurses, lab technicians, herbal medicine options, and daily monitoring of blood pressure and other vital signs.

“Without this level of care, patients cannot survive long, especially when blood pressure or sugar levels fluctuate, and I told the family and his caregivers, but they didn’t heed my advice,” he said.

The bishop, while withholding specifics about Sarpong’s illness, emphasized that prayers were combined with medical care to sustain him and concluded, “God knows best.”

The founder of the Asomafo gospel group passed away on January 20, 2026, at the age of 66, in Kumasi.

Yaw Sarpong and fellow musician Maame Tiwa, a key pillar of Asomafo music who died on December 7, 2025, had been receiving treatment at New Jerusalem Church at Sokoben Ampeyoo in the Atwima Kwanwoma District.

Adom News visited the community and the church to gather reactions after the news broke, since Yaw Sarpong had spent time with them.

Residents and church members close to Yaw Sarpong and Maame Tiwah broke down in tears during an interview.

They described it as “very sad” to lose two prominent musicians within months, recalling the duo’s contributions to their spiritual growth.

“It was Yaw Sarpong and Maame Tiwa who encouraged us to keep singing and praising God, even when we weren’t strong,” said a church member, fighting back tears. “It’s very sad to lose these two renowned musicians in a few months,” another church member said. 

It was also confirmed that Yaw Sarpong’s family took him away from the church after Maame Tiwah’s passing and he was no longer with the church community.

The church’s leadership is awaiting official confirmation from Yaw Sarpong’s family before breaking their silence.

Residents and traders around the church have expressed deep condolences to the family of the late gospel musician.

They are urging MUSIGA and the government to ensure Yaw Sarpong’s legacy lives on.

“We need something to remember these legends by,” said Maame Elizabeth, a trader who often served Yaw Sarpong and Maame Tiwa. “A statue or a book about their lives and contributions would be great. Our unborn babies should know who they were.”

Other traders echoed her sentiments.

“It’s painful to hear this news. They were kind people, always buying from us,” said one. A resident added, “Yaw Sarpong’s been ill for too long; I think it’s time for him to rest.”

1. Born in Accra to a Member of Parliament, Yaw Sarpong’s education was disrupted when his father died in 1966 after being imprisoned during the overthrow of Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

2. After his father’s death, economic challenges forced his mother to relocate the family to Akyease in Kumasi, where Yaw Sarpong traces his roots.

3. Driven by his love for music, he joined the Methodist singing group at Asuofua in the Ashanti Region. It was there that a medical doctor discovered him and formed a music group in 1971, performing mainly in churches and at social events.

4. During one such performance at Asuase in Kumasi, a pastor noticed his talent and offered to support him. Yaw Sarpong accepted the offer and stayed with the pastor.

6. In 1984, he left Professor Abraham and returned to Accra, where he worked as a taxi driver for nearly two years, between 1984 and 1986.

7. He later travelled to Liberia, where he formed the group Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo in 1986.

8. The group was made up of musicians from Liberia, Ghana and Sierra Leone, giving it a diverse West African identity.

9. Before moving to Liberia, Yaw Sarpong had already recorded his first album in 1981, titled Adesrede (Request), and followed it with a second album between 1983 and 1984.

10. He chose the name Asomafo, meaning “Messengers,” because he believed neither he nor his group members worked on their own, but rather served as vessels to spread God’s word.

For decades, Maame Tiwaa stood beside Yaw Sarpong as the soothing female voice of the Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo music group.

She contributed to numerous gospel classics that continue to inspire believers across the country.

Her last known performances were her tribute to Yaw Sarpong at this year’s TGMA night and at her son’s wedding.

In recent months, Maame Tiwa had been actively caring for Yaw Sarpong during his health struggles.

Tragically, Maame Tiwa has passed away, leaving the gospel fraternity and Yaw Sarpong himself in mourning.

Fans and members of the gospel community have begun pouring tributes, remembering her as a gentle soul whose voice brought spiritual upliftment.

The family is yet to release details regarding the cause of her death and funeral arrangements.

He stated unequivocally that, their marriage had collapsed 20 years ago when Pinamang abandoned him and their children.

The distraught wife in a radio interview claimed the family of the musician has denied her access to care for her ailing husband.

She also accused Tiwaa, a female vocalist of snatching Yaw Sarpong with the help of his family.

Despite being separated for nearly 20 years, Pinamang is confident they are still married and not officially divorced, hence deserves to be treated as a legitimate wife.

In his response, Yaw Sarpong clarified that their marriage was not legally formalized, therefore, did not require a legal divorce.

He explained that, he did the traditional rites where he was made to present a Bible, soft drinks and a ring.

The veteran musician recounted how Adwoa Pinamang abandoned him and their children and relocated to Kumasi when he was seriously ill.

Yaw Sarpong also mentioned that, he has had no communication with Adwoa Pinamang over the past two decades, which makes her recent claims and efforts to reconnect surprising.

He is convinced her renewed interest might be influenced by the recent GH¢100,000 gift he received from Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia.

He emphasized that he has moved on but will resolve all outstanding issues with his ex-wife amicably.

Speaking on Kumasi-based radio station Oyerepa FM, she revealed that this situation arose despite the recent financial support from Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who donated GHS100,000 to aid Yaw Sarpong’s healthcare.

She expressed frustration and disappointment over being sidelined by her husband’s family, despite her 13 years of unwavering support and her instrumental role in his music career.

According to her, she suggested utilizing part of the Vice President’s donation to complete Yaw Sarpong’s building, but her suggestion was dismissed by his family members.

She lamented that she has been unjustly accused of mismanaging her husband’s finances and has faced violent confrontations whenever she attempted to visit him.

The musician’s wife criticized Maame Tiwaa for accepting the family’s request to take care of Yaw Sarpong, arguing that as a woman who knew he had a wife, Tiwaa should have declined.

She stated that out of all Yaw Sarpong’s siblings, only one has shown any liking toward her. The rest, she claimed, have consistently obstructed her efforts to care for her husband and have treated her with hostility.

The situation follows Dr. Bawumia’s donation made during his visit to Yaw Sarpong ten days ago, intended to support the musician’s medical expenses.

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Mahamudu Bawumia visited gospel musician, Yaw Sarpong who has been sick for some time now.

It emerged in March 2024 that, the legendary musician was not in good health, prompting concern from his fans.

The Vice President who is currently on a campaign tour in the Ashanti region seized the opportunity to visit Mr Sarpong on Tuesday, June 11, 2024.

He was accompanied by NPP stalwarts including the National Chairman, Stephen Ntim, and Ashanti Regional Chairman, Wontumi among others.

Gospel musician, Nicholas Omane-Acheampong and Tiwaah of the Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo fame who were also present led the people to sing the famous Wo haw ne sen song.

 “I believe my talent comes from God. I know it because of how I get my lyrics. One of such songs is ‘Wo Haw Ne Sen’,” he said.

He added that because of his music career he performs in different churches across the world and his popular song was birthed from this one.

Yaw Sarpong took the opportunity to also reveal how God led him to meet his manager, Nana Kobo, who has since been playing vital roles in his life.

He described him as an angel that God sent into his life to help him propel his career.

The artistes reminded Ghanaians about how wars ruined some African countries and urged them to avoid any conflict that will disrupt the country.

They also encouraged people to accept every individual and their differences, especially, in the election period.

According to him, many veteran artistes are “dying in poverty” because they have not gained enough money from their hard work over the years.

Speaking on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, he said it is only the government that can help the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) collect royalties from every source including restaurants and bars among others.

His comments come after he was faced with a financial crisis following an accident this month.

The accident, which happened on the Accra Kumasi road, left his backup singer Tiwaa with a dislocated shoulder. The car, he added, after somersaulting also fell on one of his sons he was traveling with.

The gospel artiste revealed that as a result, they have had to pay huge sums of money for the needed medical care.

He believes that if the country’s royalty system was good, he would not be struggling to keep up with the bills from the hospital.

He said musicians are not getting enough money from GHAMRO to help sustain them, especially in such situations.

He added that it is important government focuses on the music industry and help fix its royalty system adding that music royalties are the source of income for many artistes.

Mr Sarpong has said he couldn’t fathom how the occupants of the car survived the accident.

Speaking in an interview on Zionfelix uncut, he gave thanks to God, saying it was a second chance from God.

According to him, a vehicle veered into their lane which could have led to a head-on collision.

However, the vehicle in which they were traveling somersaulted thrice after their driver attempted to escape that scene which could have been more deadly.

He said a vehicle fell on his third son whom he identified as Jordan who was with them leaving his lead vocalist, Maame Tiwaa injured.

He revealed that Maame Tiwaa’s shoulder was dislocated, coupled with a cut on the forehead among other injuries to her body.

Mr Sarpong also said he had minor pains in parts of his body including his waist.

However, he added all six persons who were involved in the accident are responding to treatment.

According to Zionfelix.net, the accident happened at Dwaso Junction on the Kumasi stretch some few minutes ago.

A resident said the accident occurred after an over-speeding truck trying to overtake another vehicle took over their lane—and in an attempt to avoid a head-on collision, the car which the gospel star was in, got hit by a different vehicle.

The vehicle of Mr Sarpong, he said, landed in a ditch after it was hit by the other vehicle.

Occupants in the vehicle, including the veteran musician and his backing vocalist, Maame Tiwaa, Zionfelix, reportedly sustained minor injuries and they are receiving treatment at the Dwaso Hospital.

To what may have come as a surprise to many, Mr Sarpong took to his Instagram page to flaunt his adorable family.

Depicting that family is everything, he posed for the camera with two gentlemen and a lady believed to be his children.

The two, who have been working closely together for over two decades, now have been rumoured to be husband and wife due to the chemistry that exists in their performances.

However, Mr Sarpong shocked many Ghanaians in an interview on Adom TV’s Badwam when he disclosed they were just colleagues.

“I have heard the rumours many times but I want to clarify she is not my wife though she came to stay with me for some time. She gave birth to all her three children there with the eldest now 35 years,” he said.

According to him, Maame Tiwaa is someone he met in 1981 during the early stages of his career at a funeral he attended with Professor Kofi Abraham.

“She also came with a Methodist band to perform at the funeral where her melodious voice attracted me to partner her for my music career.

“So I got the opportunity to work with an Ahinsan-based music group so I poached Tiwaah to join us and we have been together since,” he recounted.

He stressed they have been able to stick together including the entire ‘Asomafo’ group because they understand each other.

He pointed out they have over the years learn to adopt and understand each other’s temperament and attitude.

One person who is counting his loses is veteran Gospel musician Yaw Sarpong.

He has had to put all his engagements on hold because of the ban on social gatherings due to the Covid-19 pandemic. 

“Many people engage Yaw Sarpong and the Asomafo Band for funerals, parties, engagements and other such events but as things stand now, “we cannot perform anywhere.

“As I speak to you, about four people have made advance payments to me for their events so what am I supposed to do?”

According to Yaw Sarpong, most of the dates have fallen under the lockdown period so there is no way he can fulfil them, especially when the President has called off all social gatherings.

“I have a very big funeral to perform at on May 9 so I am praying that things would have normalised by then so we can go ahead and perform,” he told Graphic Showbiz last Tuesday, April 14.

“For those whose money I have taken in advance and the events didn’t come off, I don’t really know what I am going to do now.

“It is a very difficult situation for me. I just hope everything comes back to normal so we can go about our businesses,” he said.

Aside the engagements, Yaw Sarpong added that he released a collaboration with Sarkodie recently titled ‘Ahobrase3’ and the song was trending so they planned to launch it officially but that was not to be.

“There is no way we can do that now because of the President’s directive of no social gathering; we have to put that on hold for now till God knows when”, he said.

Yaw Sarpong used the opportunity to advise everyone to adhere to the precautionary measures that have been outlined by the World Health Organisation and the Ghana Health Service.

“Please wash your hands with soap under running water, practise social distancing, use alcohol-based hand sanitisers, cover your mouth when you cough and your nose when you sneeze and most importantly, stay at home,” he said.

“I believe when we all adhere to these precautionary measures, it will reduce the spread of the virus and eventually eradicate it completely so that we all go back to our usual schedules and lives,” he stated.

Yaw Sarpong has been in the gospel music industry for four decades. Together with his Asomafo band, they have performed at high profile events in Ghana and across the world.

He took a break to see to his health challenges and bounced back early this year with a collaboration with Sarkodie titled ‘Ahobrase3.’

Legendary Gospel Musician, Yaw Sarpong, has revealed how an embarrassing moment at the America Embassy later earned him a five year visa.

According musician Sarpong, he was selected together with Suzzy and Mart, as well as Seth Frimpong of ‘Mehuri so’ fame for a concert in America to raise funds for the renovation of the Korle Bu Hospital.

However, upon arrival at the embassy, his colleagues were granted three visas after a short interview on the purpose of travel.

To his utmost surprise, he said he was asked to prove beyond reasonable doubt he was selected for the concert too and after hours of conviction, he was turned down.

Mr Sarpong, who disclosed his disappointed at the process, said he went back to the embassy the next day with copies of his songs after a fervent prayer the previous night.

“Immediately I got to the embassy, they were quick to make me out and I also didn’t hesitate to pour out my CDs in front of them. Luckily for me, a Ghanaian who works at the embassy also came to testify that I am one of the greatest gospel musicians in Ghana,” he said on Accra based TV3.

He said the embassy officials apologised to him and granted a five year stay in the United States though he needed just a month stay for the concert and fund raising.

Mr Sarpong is known for his numerous hit songs with the Asomafo band with the unique vocalist and songstress, Tiwaah.

He also recently featured Sarkodie in a new song titled ‘Ahobraseɛ’ which talks about being humble and living a simple life when God blesses people with wealth and riches.

The veteran gospel musician said he was dumbfounded when Sarkodie mentioned him as one of the gospel musicians he would love to collaborate with in an earlier interview.

One of my managers told me that Sarkodie was praising me so I decided to write a song to feature him, the Oko Yi musician disclosed to Andy Dosty.

Meanwhile, Mr Sarpong has finally released Ahobraseɛ song off his upcoming 26th album. The song which preaches about humility, features rapper Sarkodie.

The song made it to the top trends on Twitter where fans lauded the versatile rapper for honouring the singer’s call.

Narrating how he met Sarkodie, he said the rapper invited him over to his wedding before they had the opportunity later to visit the studio.

He added that, the Best International Flow rapper took no dime from him, rather promised to help him push his works across the digital space.

Sarkodie called me and he told me that he had a wedding at Labadi beach so he wanted me to come there. He didn’t take even take One Cedi to record with me.

When he calls me, he tells me how he will use his name to support me and I am very surprised because most of the secular guys don’t find it that easy with him [Sarkodie]. I think God sent him to me.

In fact, he has really surprised me. Sarkodie isn’t only famous but he has an outstanding character. Sarkodie is more than being humble, he told Andy Dosty.

In an interview on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, he described Sarkodie as God-sent, adding that, he was surprised the ‘Adonai’ hitmaker took time off his busy schedule to work with him.

Meanwhile, with 25 albums to his credit, Mr Sarpong is ready to step up into the music sphere with his upcoming 26th album which he says will be the talk of the town.
