I hold the Prince of Highlife title – KK Fosu https://www.adomonline.com/i-hold-the-prince-of-highlife-title-kk-fosu/ Wed, 02 Jul 2025 11:57:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550554 At the recent Amakye Dede at 50 Years of Music concert in London, nostalgia and excitement filled the air as Ghanaian musician KK Fosu boldly declared himself the Prince of Highlife.

In a genre steeped in history and cultural pride, some may argue that after decades of hit songs, KK Fosu deserves to be called a king. But the Anadwo Yede hitmaker has chosen a title that reflects reverence rather than ego.

Speaking to Graphic Showbiz in an interview on June 21, he explained the reasoning behind his self-appointed title: “The title of prince reflects both respect and humility.”

According to KK Fosu, the real kings of Highlife—those who pioneered and continue to shape the genre—are still active and remain an inspiration to the new generation.

“There are kings in the Highlife world who are still active and relevant. They are our inspiration, and we keep tapping into their knowledge. I mean, I am still learning from them, so how can I call myself a king?” he said.

For him, Highlife is more than just music—it is the heartbeat of Ghanaian identity. “Highlife isn’t something to take lightly or see as a myth. Highlife is real. It’s our life, culture, our root,” he said passionately.

KK Fosu urged younger musicians to honour the genre’s roots while also evolving with the times. “We cannot afford to lose our way. And the only way to survive in this space is to create good music and listen to the legends who walk among us,” he advised.

Beyond admiration, his commitment to Highlife is personal and enduring. “My signature line is ‘we don’t stop,’ and that’s more than a motto; it’s my mantra,” he affirmed.

Although the cause of death is unknown, numerous celebrities on social media have extended their sympathies to the bereaved family as well as to all Highlife fans who enjoyed Dada KD’s songs.

KK Fosu, a close friend of Dada KD, says he was surprised to hear the news of the death and is yet to come to terms with what has happened over the last few days.

“You know, it has been almost a year now since I had that catastrophic accident on the Apam road, and hearing about the death of a very close friend like Dada KD has made me very sad.

“We often talked a lot, and I didn’t know about any major illness. In fact, he was preparing to play a show in London, just like me, for the Amakye Dede show next month.

“I am really saddened by his death because he was my hero and we had lots in common,” KK Fosu told GNA Entertainment.

However, KK Fosu believes Dada KD has left music lovers with timeless songs and hopes they will give him a befitting farewell when the details of his funeral are announced.

Dada KD, who had a stellar music career, released nine albums, including “Somugye,” “Ebeboawo,” “Obiara Se Aye,” and “Odo Mu Anigyebi.”

He performed all over the world and won numerous awards, including the Best Male Vocalist award at the 2004 Ghana Music Awards (UK).

KK Fosu explains why he loves Akpeteshie https://www.adomonline.com/kk-fosu-explains-loves-akpeteshie/ Thu, 13 Apr 2017 06:02:30 +0000 http://ghana-news.adomonline.com/new/?p=75451 Though medical practitioners have been critical of the high concentration of the locally prepared ‘Akepteshie’ particularly the damage it can cause the liver and the risk of alcoholism, yet highlife singer K K Fosu prefers it to any other alcoholic beverage.

The artiste on Saturday during an interview on Kasapa FM, disclosed that ‘Akpeteshie’ has always been his favourite because it is locally distilled and without impurities.

“I love Akpeteshie because it’s locally made and pure. There are no chemicals in it but I wouldn’t promote drugs in take. I needed to stop because I was advised and more over it wasn’t good for my health. I’m a family man now, I’ve kids and I have to focus on their future in order for them to have a better life.”
K K also revealed how he tried marijuana several times in his life.

“I do take in alcohol and my favourite is ‘Akpeteshie’ but the only high drug I ever did was marijuana and that was a long time ago but I don’t do it anymore.” He also stated that the fact that he likes local alcohol (Akpeteshie) doesn’t make him an addict, adding that  individuals must limit the in take of alcohol because it’s the biggest drug which is affecting health which people don’t pay attention to.

Akpeteshie is an alcoholic spirit produced in Ghana by distilling palm wine or sugar cane juice. Other names for this drink include apio, VC10 as well as numerous other less than flattering names. It is technically a brandy and a member of the aguardente family.

Akpeteshie is not professionally bottled or sealed, but instead poured into unlabeled used bottles.

The name “akpeteshie” was given to the drink with its prohibition: the word comes from the Ga language – Ape te shie – the act of hiding spoken in greater Accra and means “they are hiding,” referring to the secretive way in which non-European inhabitants were forced to consume the beverage.

MzVee was wrong choice for BET Awards – KK Fosu https://www.adomonline.com/mzvee-wrong-choice-bet-awards-kk-fosu/ Sun, 02 Apr 2017 13:51:31 +0000 http://ghana-news.adomonline.com/new/?p=58261 The nomination of dancehall artiste MzVee for the 2016 Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards was a wrong one, highlife musician Kaakyire Kwame Fosu, popularly known as K.K Fosu, has said.

According to him, EL, who was crowned the 2015/16 Artiste of the Year, should have been the obvious choice for the prestigious awards event that took place at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, USA, last June.

Speaking on Ayekoo Ayekoo, Accra FM Friday, KK Fosu said Charterhouse Ghana, organisers of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, who are also in charge of the nominations for the BET Awards, deliberately picked MzVee to represent at the ceremony at EL’s expense.

“After Sarkodie won at the BET, Charterhouse felt he had become disrespectful and so they would teach him a lesson and that was the more reason why Stonebwoy was chosen as the Artiste of the Year in 2015 to enable him represent Ghana at the BET. After Stonebwoy went to BET he was dumped, never to be used again,” the Sudwe hit maker recalled.

“EL, who won Artiste of the Year in 2016, just look at what happened to him. Instead of being selected for the BET, he was dumped and MzVee, from nowhere, was chosen to represent at the BET because they felt EL had become arrogant and disrespectful. MzVee should not have been chosen, she was a wrong choice for the event.”

Sarkodie, Obrafuor not good ‘singers’ – KK Fosu https://www.adomonline.com/sarkodie-obrafuor-not-good-singers-kk-fosu/ Sun, 02 Apr 2017 12:31:17 +0000 http://ghana-news.adomonline.com/new/?p=58341 Highlife artiste KK Fosu has commended rappers who try incorporating singing into their compositions, but has said they still fall short of the standard expected of them as singers.

Artistes, including Obrafuor, Sarkodie, EL and Kofi Kinaata, noted for their raps, are evolving into singers, and can be heard singing on a number of recent tracks.

KK Fosu, who is back on the scene with a new composition, Roll Call, sees the evolution as a good move, given it will make the rappers more versatile, but says rap-singers will need to do more to be regarded as serious singers.

The Sudwe composer explained that unlike rap, which is essentially “talking” and only involves arranging verses, singing “goes with rhythm”, which is “not easy”, hence “it is good for an artiste to learn how to sing”.

Asked if he regarded any of the rap artistes as serious singers, he replied tersely: “No, none of them.”

However, KK Fosu was impressed with the exploits of Yaa Pono and says the rapper can do better as a singer than as a rap artiste.

“…Yaa Pono, that boy is great, but it looks like no one is paying attention to his music. That guy can sing better than rapping, because he falls on notes well, whatever keys he raises the guy makes sense,” he told Nana Romeo on Accra100.5FM’s mid-morning show Ayekoo Ayekoo on Friday March 31.

He advised rappers intent on incorporating singing into their compositions to learn it well because “singing is not easy”.

KK Fosu’s other hit tracks include Number One and Oga.
