The aircraft departed Ghana on April 3, 2026, ahead of its conversion, which will equip it with state-of-the-art life-support and medical care equipment, enabling it to respond to emergencies and transport patients in need of urgent medical attention.

The initiative aims to support Ghanaian healthcare services by providing rapid response capabilities for critical medical situations, particularly where conventional ambulances may face delays due to traffic or remote locations.

While details on the timeline for the jet’s return and operational readiness are yet to be disclosed, the move has been widely welcomed as a significant step towards improving emergency medical response infrastructure in the country.

CID Headquarters takes over Ibrahim Mahama’s assault probe https://www.adomonline.com/cid-headquarters-takes-over-ibrahim-mahamas-assault-probe/ Thu, 26 Mar 2026 14:27:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2644512 The Ghana Police Service has handed over investigations into the alleged assault of renowned visual artist Ibrahim Mahama to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters.

The decision followed a high-level meeting on March 26, 2026, involving the Inspector-General of Police, members of the Police Management Board, and Mr. Mahama.

According to the Director of Public Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the IGP personally heard Mr. Mahama’s account before directing the CID to take over the case from the Regional Command. She also confirmed that the Director-General of the Police Professional Standards Bureau has been tasked to fast-track a parallel inquiry into the conduct of the officers involved.

“Any persons found culpable will be taken through the due process of the law,” ACP Ansah-Akrofi stated.

Prior to the meeting, the Regional Command had already collected statements from Mr. Mahama and his associates, visited the scene, and engaged him at his residence. Police authorities have assured the artist of a thorough investigation and urged the public to remain calm as the process unfolds.

The incident reportedly occurred on March 21, 2026, shortly after Mr. Mahama attended Eid-ul-Fitr prayers at a mosque in Tamale. His vehicle was stopped near the Mariam Hotel junction during what was described as a routine police check, which allegedly escalated.

Mr. Mahama claims officers from the IGP’s Special Operations Team, known as the Black Maria, boarded his bus, forced him to unlock his phone, deleted footage he had recorded, and assaulted him. He reported sustaining injuries including a broken tooth, cut lips, rib pain, and recurring headaches, for which he received treatment at a private health facility in Tamale.

At a press briefing on March 23, Mr. Mahama said the incident disrupted several international commitments, including lectures at the Royal College of Art, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Oxford, as well as trips to Helsinki, Amsterdam, and South Africa. He indicated his intention to pursue legal action.

The police, however, have disputed parts of his account. Deputy Superintendent of Police Bawah Abdul Jalil described the operation as a traffic enforcement exercise that escalated due to the conduct of the driver. Conflicting reports have also emerged about the presence of the Black Maria unit. While the Northern Regional Police Command said the unit had been withdrawn from the region on March 5, DSP Jalil maintained it was present during the March 21 operation.

The ongoing CID investigations are expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Ibrahim Mahama, one of Ghana’s leading visual artists, is currently appearing before the Police Management Board following allegations that he was assaulted by police personnel.

The alleged incident reportedly took place on March 21 and is said to involve members of the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team, popularly known as the “Black Maria.”

However, the team, led by Abdul Bawa Jalil, has denied any involvement, insisting its officers were not part of the incident.

In response, the matter has been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau, the internal body tasked with investigating misconduct within the Ghana Police Service.

To ensure a thorough inquiry, the Inspector-General of Police has invited both Ibrahim Mahama and the Northern Regional Police Commander to Accra to provide statements and assist with the investigation.

The meeting with the Police Management Board is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the allegations and help determine whether any misconduct occurred.

The case has drawn widespread public attention, with many calling for a transparent investigation given the prominence of the artist and the seriousness of the claims.

Ibrahim Mahama, Police commander to meet IGP over alleged assault case https://www.adomonline.com/ibrahim-mahama-police-commander-to-meet-igp-over-alleged-assault-case/ Wed, 25 Mar 2026 14:52:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2644020 The Northern Regional Minister, Adolf John Ali, says diplomat and visual artist Ibrahim Mahama, along with the Regional Police Commander, are scheduled to meet with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) today regarding an ongoing investigation into his alleged assault case.

The Minister emphasised the region’s commitment to ensuring justice is served, stating that the meeting is part of the investigative process.

Ghanaian diplomat and artist Ibrahim Mahama was allegedly assaulted by a group believed to be part of the Ghana Police Service’s Special Operations Team on 21 March 2026.

Mr Ibrahim Mahama held a press conference on 23 March 2026, highlighting the injuries he and his uncle had sustained.

He also talked of his intention to pursue the matter in Court.

Mr Mahama also called for justice for himself and others involved in an alleged similar assault.

He further called for the disbandment of the black Maria team.

However, the Special Operations Team has denied involvement, according to their commander, DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil.

But speaking to the media in Tamale, the Northern Regional Minister said as Chairman of the Regional Security Committee, he will ensure justice is served.

“We noticed that he had a broken tooth and broken lip, and I stood with him for some time, and I told the medical doctor to do everything possible to take good care of our brother because, first, he is a Ghanaian, it’s my duty to protect every Ghanaian in the region as the regional chairman. Secondly, he is one of the few diplomats we as a region boast of, and so we care so much, ” the Minister said

He said the Regional Commander continues to report to him daily on the development.

Responding to Mr Mahama’s alleged assault and the potential to escalate into a larger debate as seen on social media, with possible ties to politics and chieftaincy sentiments being churned out.

The Regional Minister said that as Chairman of the Regional Security Council, they have assured him that an investigation would be conducted devoid of any leniency.

“We are not bringing any sect into the issue, be it chieftency or political,” the Minister said. “If it’s found that Jalil didn’t behave well, in fact, he should know that he is a police officer.

“I’m here as the Regional Minister and the Chairman of the Regional Security Council,” the Minister said. “If he is found guilty of the allegations after the IGP’s investigations, the IGP would recommend what should happen.”

Ibrahim Mahama halts international engagements after alleged Police assault https://www.adomonline.com/ibrahim-mahama-halts-international-engagements-after-alleged-police-assault/ Tue, 24 Mar 2026 06:31:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2643275 Renowned Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama has suspended a series of international engagements following an alleged assault by personnel of the Ghana Police Service in Tamale, which he says has left him injured and traumatised.

The artist, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Red Clay Studio, said the incident has forced him to halt work and cancel planned lectures and exhibitions across Europe.

He had been scheduled to travel to London to deliver lectures at the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford and the Royal Academy of Arts, before continuing to Helsinki, Milan and Venice this week.

Incident

Giving an account of the incident at a press conference in Tamale on March 23, 2026, Mr Mahama said it occurred shortly after Eid-ul-Fitr prayers on Saturday, March 21, 2026, while he was returning home with family members.

He explained that his vehicle was caught in heavy traffic near the Mariam Hotel junction when a team of police officers attempted to force their way through the congestion.

According to him, when the officers were unable to pass, they redirected their frustration towards nearby civilians, approached his vehicle, entered it and assaulted him and his uncle.

As a result, he said he sustained injuries, including a broken front tooth, and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Describing the impact of the incident, Mr Mahama said: “I cannot really sleep at night because my entire body, especially my ribs are paining me and my mouth is full of sores”.

He further alleged that after the incident, the officers took him to the Sakasaka Police Station, where he was again manhandled.

“At the Sakasaka police station, the officers took my phone and deleted all the pictures that I took during the altercation. They even threaten that they can kill us and nothing will happen to them,” he said.

Mr Mahama said he has since lodged a formal complaint with the Northern Regional Police Command, where his statement has been taken and a medical report issued.

He called for justice, urging authorities to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents.

Condemnation and investigations

The Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, has condemned the alleged assault and assured that any officers found culpable would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has directed investigations into the incident.

In a separate statement, the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, expressed deep concern and extended sympathy to the artist.

She highlighted Mr Mahama’s contribution to Ghana’s cultural sector, particularly through Red Clay Studio, and described the alleged assault as troubling, reaffirming the country’s commitment to justice and human rights.

Ms Gomashie added that she had engaged the Minister for the Interior on the matter and received assurances of full support in identifying those responsible.

“Please be assured that we stand with you; your safety, well-being, and your priceless contributions to the creative sector remain of utmost importance to Ghana and the world,” she said.

Ibrahim Mahama announces legal action against Black Maria special operations team over alleged assault in Tamale https://www.adomonline.com/ibrahim-mahama-announces-legal-action-against-black-maria-special-operations-team-over-alleged-assault-in-tamale/ Mon, 23 Mar 2026 14:47:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2643220 Celebrated Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama has declared his intention to take legal action against members of the Black Maria — the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team — following an incident he describes as a serious assault, saying those responsible must be held accountable.

Speaking at a press conference in Tamale, Mr Mahama said the encounter left him seriously injured and forced him to cancel several international engagements. He insisted the matter would not be ignored, saying there was a need for accountability.

Detailing the impact of the incident, Mr Mahama said his injuries had disrupted both his health and professional commitments.

“That evening, I was meant to travel to the UK because I had to go and give some lectures in some schools from Cambridge to Oxford to the Royal College in London, and also continue to Helsinki for work and then to Amsterdam and then to South Africa before coming home,” he said.

.

“But all those trips have to be cancelled, and I don’t think I can even travel for the next month because the last few days I have not even eaten solid food because my lips are all bruised, and three of my teeth are broken, I have sores in my mouth.”

He added that the situation had brought his life to a halt, saying, “Currently, it has put my entire life on hold.”

Mr Mahama also raised concerns about alleged conduct by the unit, claiming there had been previous reports of abuse.

“Of course, we’ve heard many stories about the same unit and the brutalities,” he said. “That’s why they could say that we could kill you and nothing will happen.”

He warned that failure to address such incidents could discourage young people from contributing to the country.

“If at the end of the day, through these brutal actions, a lot of us young people will not feel like we need to stay in a place like this, then it’s rather on the bad side of justice,” he said.

Mr. Mahama confirmed that legal action is being considered and described it as necessary not just for himself, but for the wider public.

“Certainly, we are considering legal action. It’s very important. It’s a no-brainer. We have to do it,” he said.

“It’s not for me, but it’s actually for everyone else because if this could happen to me, as well-known as I am, then what about the people on the street?”

“Who’s going to speak for that person? So, we have to do it for the benefit of the collective society that we’re in,” he said.

The Black Maria team has rejected the allegations. In a response, the unit said the incident was part of a traffic enforcement operation involving a driver who refused to comply.

The team also released a video showing a man identified as Mr. Mahama’s uncle pleading with officers. However, Mr. Mahama dismissed the footage, claiming it was manipulated to “garner public sympathy”.

Celebrated Ghanaian visual artist Ibrahim Mahama has alleged that he was assaulted by police officers on Saturday morning while traveling through Tamale.

Mahama, founder of the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA) and CEO of Red Clay, said the incident occurred as he was returning from the mosque.

Confirming the incident in a Facebook post on Thursday, Mr. Mahama described it as a “tragic misfortune.”

He explained that the train, which he had acquired nearly two years ago, was one of the most difficult artefacts to secure. It was awaiting body repairs due to extensive rust accumulated over the years.

The train formed part of Ghana’s oldest railway stock, now out of service, and had been preserved as part of Mr. Mahama’s efforts to safeguard the country’s historical artefacts.

No injuries were reported. “Our hearts may be broken, but our spirits are as high as ever,” he said.

Mr. Mahama expressed gratitude to the Ghana National Fire Service for their swift response and to members of the local community for their support. He also urged the public to exercise caution during the dry season to help prevent similar incidents.

Vision, focus turn dreams to reality – Ibrahim Mahama on honorary doctorate https://www.adomonline.com/vision-focus-turn-dreams-to-reality-ibrahim-mahama-on-honorary-doctorate/ Sun, 01 Feb 2026 08:20:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2626270 The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) has conferred an honorary Doctor of Science degree upon renowned businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama.

The honour, bestowed during the university’s 18th Special Congregation on Saturday, January 31, 2026, recognises Mr Mahama’s nearly three-decade contribution to the mining and construction sectors.

The event was graced by President John Dramani Mahama as the special guest of honour, alongside former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who serves as the university’s Chancellor.

Accepting the degree, the founder of Engineers & Planners (E&P) used his platform to inspire a new generation of professionals, emphasising that while he followed a non-traditional path, his success was built on rigorous discipline and a sense of responsibility.

“To be conferred with this honorary doctorate degree is not merely a personal honour; it is a recognition of what is possible when determination meets opportunity, when vision is pursued with unwavering discipline, and when success is shared with those who need it most,” he said.

Addressing the graduates, he added a reminder: “Do not let anyone tell you that formal education is the only path to greatness. Vision, focus, and hard work are what turn dreams into reality.”

Mr Mahama’s journey began in 1997 with a small equipment rental firm that has since evolved into West Africa’s largest indigenous mining and construction company.

A key highlight of his address was the Black Volta Gold Project, which stands as a symbol of national pride in an industry historically dominated by foreign multinationals.

“For the first time, a large-scale gold mining asset in Ghana is 100 percent owned and controlled by Ghanaians. This is a statement that we can lead in capital-intensive industries once dominated by others,” Mr Mahama stressed.

Turning his gaze to the technological frontier, the business mogul lauded UMaT’s forward-thinking approach, specifically its collaboration with the Ghana Chamber of Mines to establish an AI Robotics Centre.

“AI presents profound challenges, but it also unlocks extraordinary opportunities, enhancing safety, improving efficiency, and even helping to combat illegal mining,” he noted.

In a move to ensure his legacy contributes to the sector’s future, UMaT announced the establishment of the Ibrahim Mahama Institute for Precious and Green Ghana, which will focus on sustainable mining and environmental stewardship.

The ceremony took a personal turn when President John Dramani Mahama took the podium to congratulate his younger brother. He recalled how Ibrahim’s industrial instincts were visible long before he became a CEO.

“Even as children, Ibrahim displayed remarkable entrepreneurial instincts, always thinking of ways to create, build, and provide. I, on the other hand, have always been drawn to speaking and persuasion. It is inspiring to see how Ibrahim has turned his early entrepreneurial spark into a force for national development,” the President remarked.

UMaT confers honorary doctorate on Ibrahim Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/umat-confers-honorary-doctorate-on-ibrahim-mahama/ Sat, 31 Jan 2026 20:01:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2626225 The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in Tarkwa has conferred an honorary doctorate on Ghanaian businessman Ibrahim Mahama, in recognition of his contributions to the mining industry and his philanthropic impact on society.

Mr Mahama, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Engineers and Planners Company Limited (E&P), received the honour during the university’s 18th Special Congregation Ceremony, which brought together leading figures from academia, government and industry.

The ceremony was attended by President John Dramani Mahama, who is Ibrahim Mahama’s brother, and former President John Agyekum Kufuor, the Chancellor of UMaT.

Explaining the basis for the award, UMaT Vice-Chancellor Prof Richard Kwasi Amankwah said Mr Mahama and his firm have introduced innovation and modern technology into Ghana’s mining and mine-support services, leading to expanded local participation and job creation.

He noted that Engineers and Planners has played a major role in strengthening indigenous capacity within the extractive sector.

Both President Mahama and former President Kufuor congratulated the awardee for what they described as distinguished service to the mining industry and national development.

In his response, Ibrahim Mahama thanked the university for the recognition and pledged to return to UMaT to share his experiences with students and young entrepreneurs.

Born on January 29, 1971, in Tamale in the Northern Region, Ibrahim Mahama attended Tamale Senior High School before continuing his education at the College of North West London in the United Kingdom. He later returned home to pursue business ventures.

In 1997, he founded Engineers & Planners as a heavy equipment rental and civil engineering firm.

Over the years, it has evolved into one of West Africa’s largest indigenous-owned mining and construction companies, executing major contracts in Ghana and across the sub-region, including operations at the Tarkwa and Damang mines.

Beyond contract mining, E&P has expanded into mine ownership, with interests in strategic gold concessions such as the Black Volta and Sankofa Gold Projects, deepening Ghanaian participation in the mining value chain.

Mr Mahama has also diversified into other sectors, including cement production through Dzata Cement Limited, poultry farming at Asutsuare Poultry Farms, and heavy-duty vehicle distribution via Man Bosch Ghana Limited.

His business leadership has attracted several honours, including African Industrialist of the Year at the African Achievers’ Awards in London and Mining and Engineering CEO of the Year in Ghana.

He is equally noted for his social impact initiatives, including co-founding the Joyce Tamakloe Cancer Foundation, which supports cancer awareness and health outreach programmes nationwide.

Ghana’s Ibrahim Mahama becomes first African to top annual art power list https://www.adomonline.com/ghanas-ibrahim-mahama-becomes-first-african-to-top-annual-art-power-list/ Fri, 05 Dec 2025 09:34:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2607388 The Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama has become the first African to be named the most influential figure in the art world in ArtReview magazine’s annual power list.

Mahama, whose work often uses found materials including textile remnants, topped the ranking of the contemporary art world’s most influential people and organisations as chosen by a global judging panel.

He told the Guardian he felt humbled to be named at the top of a list he first heard about while studying at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana in 2011, when the Chinese dissident Ai Weiwei topped the ranking.

He said: “For me to be part of this, especially coming from a place like Ghana, which for many years was almost as if we were not even part of the discourse, is quite humbling.”

Mahama, who is based in Ghana’s northern city of Tamale, said he hoped his success could inspire younger artists in his country to “realise that they are part of the contemporary discourse and not just on the sideline”.

Mark Rappolt, ArtReview’s editor-in-chief, said the choice of Mahama indicated that the seat of power was shifting in the world of art.

He said: “I think you could also look at that as saying there’s a realignment of where global finance sits … I wouldn’t say that the art world is separate from those worlds. The MENA region has historically always been a bridge between east and west.”

The power list’s top 10 features several artists and curators from the Middle East and Africa. Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, one of the most powerful women in Qatar and the chair of Qatar Museums since 2006, is at No 2, in part due to her immense purchasing power.

Last year’s No 1, Sheikha Hoor al-Qasimi, the president and director of the Sharjah Art Foundation in the United Arab Emirates, slips two places to No 3, and the Egyptian artist Wael Shawky comes in at No 4.

Singapore’s Ho Tzu Nyen (5), the Americans Amy Sherald (6), Kerry James Marshall (7) and Saidiya Hartman (8), the UK-based group Forensic Architecture (9) and Germany’s Wolfgang Tillmans (10) round out the top 10.

Mahama has had an incredibly busy couple of years. He is represented by the influential Apalazzo Gallery and White Cube galleries and his practice includes using old hospital beds, discarded train carriages and other artefacts that he turns into art objects.

Last year at Edinburgh’s Fruitmarket Gallery, Mahama’s Songs About Roses, which focused on the rise and fall of the railway that the British government built in Ghana between 1898 and 1923, was described as being “as extraordinary as a great magic-realist novel”.

The Guardian’s Jonathan Jones said the work’s reckoning with history’s ghosts “puts Mahama up there with William Kentridge and Anselm Kiefer as one of today’s most important artists.”

A few months before his Edinburgh show opened, Mahama draped the Barbican in 2,000 sq metres of bright pink fabric, which had been stitched together in a football field in Ghana because it was so large.

In 2019, Mahama opened the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art in Tamale, a 900 sq metre site that is an exhibition space, library, residency space, archive and studio.

Rappolt said many of the highest-ranking artists ran programmes in their local communities. He said of Mahama: “He’s not acting as this classic idea of the sole artist producing his own the flashes of genius, but also as a person who’s part of a community.”

Thirty anonymous experts from around the world compiled the annual power ranking, which has been running for 24 years.

Ibrahim Mahama urges wealthy Ghanaians to support their communities https://www.adomonline.com/ibrahim-mahama-urges-wealthy-ghanaians-to-support-their-communities/ Mon, 27 Oct 2025 16:14:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2592788 Businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama has called on affluent Ghanaians to extend support to their communities, stressing that wealth should be used to uplift others and drive national development.

Speaking at an engagement with movie stars in Kumasi, Mr. Mahama emphasized the importance of giving back, describing it as a moral responsibility rather than a choice.

“If you live in a country where help is needed and you don’t help, you are a stupid man. You can’t be the richest man in the cemetery. You’ll die and leave it one day,” he said.

The event, which also served as an official invitation to the collaborative dramalogue programme “Akwaaba vs Oobakɛ”, a partnership between Liezer-Legacy Productions and the Kumawood Ashanti Film Association (KAFA), aims to raise funds for a permanent KAFA office complex to support the growth of film and theatre in the Ashanti Region.

Mr. Mahama urged the wealthy to set aside political and social divisions and work together to address community challenges.

Businessman Ibrahim Mahama is sponsoring the emergency transfer of remains from Wednesday’s tragic military helicopter crash to South Africa for advanced forensic testing, as Ghana continues to mourn the loss of two ministers and six other officials.

In light of the severely damaged state of the remains, Ibrahim Mahama offered his private jet for the mission.

The jet departed on Thursday, August 7, 2025, carrying biological samples from the victims, along with a government delegation and forensic experts from the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

The team is led by the CID’s Head of Forensic Analysis and is expected to complete DNA testing within 6 to 12 hours of arrival. A solemn prayer session attended by the Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak, the IGP, CID Director-General, and other dignitaries was held before takeoff.

Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak told the media the decision to send the samples abroad was to accelerate identification and allow for dignified burials. “We are working around the clock to conclude investigations and give families closure,” he said.

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh also explained that even when testing is done locally, international confirmation is often required. Highlighting the need for speed and certainty.

The crash occurred on Wednesday, August 6, in Adansi Akrofuom, Ashanti Region, claiming the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Alhaji Murtala Mohammed, and six others:

Ibrahim Mahama gifts boxing legend Azumah Nelson a Toyota Fortuner vehicle https://www.adomonline.com/ibrahim-mahama-gifts-boxing-legend-azumah-nelson-a-toyota-fortuner-vehicle/ Tue, 17 Jun 2025 16:55:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2545705 Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama has honoured boxing legend Azumah Nelson with a brand-new Toyota Fortuner and an undisclosed sum of money in a show of appreciation for the sporting icon’s enduring legacy.

The surprise presentation took place yesterday (June 16, 2025) at Mr Mahama’s office following a courtesy call by a delegation including Sharaf Mahama, son of President John Dramani Mahama and CEO of Legacy Rise Sports, and British-Nigerian heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.

The group, fresh from their participation in the Battle of the Beasts boxing event at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Friday, June 13, 2025, had earlier paid a visit to President Mahama at the Jubilee House before heading to thank Mr Mahama for his support.

Describing Azumah Nelson as “arguably Africa’s greatest boxer”, Mr Mahama said the gesture was meant to celebrate not just the three-time world champion’s achievements in the ring, but also his continued contributions to sports and youth development in Ghana. Friends and dignitaries at the event looked on in admiration as Mr Mahama handed over the car keys in a moment that was both symbolic and emotional.

Azumah Nelson, visibly moved by the gesture, expressed his heartfelt gratitude. “I am grateful to you, Ibrahim Mahama, and to Sharaf Mahama for this big surprise. I didn’t expect this at all,” he said. “I am just supporting my son Sharaf who has shown great interest in promoting the sport I love.”

The gesture comes at a time when Nelson’s legacy continues to inspire younger generations, and his role in mentoring and supporting boxing initiatives has cemented his place not only in sporting history but in the hearts of Ghanaians.

Among those present were members of Anthony Joshua’s team, sports entrepreneur Yaw Sakyi Afari of RITE Sports Services, Henry Quarshie—businessman and a member of Azumah’s close team—as well as several associates from Legacy Rise Sports and friends of Ibrahim Mahama.

Ibrahim Mahama, founder of Engineers and Planners and Dzata Cement Limited, is known for his philanthropic ventures, particularly in the areas of education, sports and infrastructure development.

The Battle of the Beasts event, which attracted global attention with the presence of Anthony Joshua, was a celebration of Ghanaian boxing and a demonstration of efforts to raise the country’s profile on the international boxing stage.

Ibrahim Mahama sues Bright Simons; demands GH₵10m in damages https://www.adomonline.com/ibrahim-mahama-sues-bright-simons-demands-gh%e2%82%b510m-in-damages/ Thu, 29 May 2025 15:13:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2539870 Businessman Ibrahim Mahama has filed a defamation suit at the Accra High Court against the Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons, demanding GH₵10 million in damages for what he describes as false and malicious publications.

Mr. Mahama, founder of Engineers and Planners (E&P), claims that the statements made by Mr. Simons have severely damaged both his personal reputation and that of his company.

The suit, filed on Wednesday, May 28, stems from an article authored by Mr. Simons titled Ghana Provides a Lesson in How Not to Nationalise a Gold Mine published on April 19, 2025, on his website, brightsimons.com. The article was later shared on Mr. Simons’ official X (formerly Twitter) handle, @BBSimons, where it amassed over 93,000 views, 250 reactions, 98 reposts, 26 comments, and 109 bookmarks.

According to the plaintiff, this wide engagement contributed significantly to the circulation of the allegedly defamatory content.

In the publication, Simons suggested that E&P was financially distressed due to stalled operations at the Damang gold mine, with creditors “up in arms.” The article also implied that Mr. Mahama, brother of President John Mahama, was benefiting from political connections and receiving undue favours under government mining policies.

Mr. Mahama has flatly denied the allegations, describing them as “entirely false and wholly without factual basis.”

As part of the reliefs sought, he is demanding:

  • A declaration that the statements made by Bright Simons are defamatory;

  • A public retraction and apology published on the same digital platforms and as a full-page advertisement in the Daily Graphic for six consecutive editions over a three-month period;

  • A perpetual injunction restraining Mr. Simons from publishing any further defamatory content about him;

  • GH₵10 million in general damages;

  • Legal costs and any other relief the court may deem fit.

The case is expected to attract significant public interest, given the personalities involved and its potential implications for free expression and responsible journalism.

The meeting, held in Accra on Monday, February 3, 2025, brought together Melchizedek and his parents for an inspiring conversation about education, ambition, and the future of science in Ghana.

During the meeting, Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, a strong advocate for youth empowerment and academic excellence, commended the young physics prodigy for his remarkable achievements.

Melchizedek, who hails from Bole in the Savannah Region, made headlines after scoring an impressive 5 As and 3 Bs in the WASSCE at just 13 years old, earning him a place at KNUST to study for a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics.

As part of an effort to nurture his passion for science and mining engineering, Mr. Ibrahim Mahama offered Melchizedek an exclusive learning experience aboard one of his private jets.

The young scholar was taken into the cockpit while being flown back to Kumasi en route to campus, where he got a firsthand look at the technical operations of an aircraft, aligning with his deep interest in physics and aerospace engineering.

Melchizedek, who initially aspired to become a pilot before shifting his focus to physics, was visibly excited about the opportunity.

“This experience reinforces my belief that understanding the principles of physics can open doors to many fields, including aerospace engineering,” he said after the cockpit tour.

Beyond offering mentorship, Ibrahim Mahama also pledged full educational funding for Melchizedek to support his studies at KNUST and beyond.

The businessman assured the young prodigy and his family that he would cover all tuition, accommodation, and essential academic expenses to ensure he reaches his full potential without financial barriers.

His parents expressed their gratitude to Mr. Ibrahim Mahama for taking an interest in their son’s academic journey, providing him with a unique opportunity to explore aviation technology up close, and securing his future with financial assistance.

Mr. Ibrahim Mahama encouraged Melchizedek to continue striving for excellence, assuring him of his unwavering support.

“Young minds like Melchizedek are the future of Ghana. It is our responsibility to support and nurture them so they can reach their full potential,” he stated.

Her journey of hope began early Sunday morning when Lisa was wheeled out of Ridge Hospital in Accra, accompanied by her family.

She was transported to Kotoka International Airport in an ambulance, where emotional farewells were exchanged.

For Lisa’s family, the trip signifies a chance at recovery. They had previously sold almost everything in a desperate attempt to fund her treatment until the CEO of Engineers & Planners and Dzata Cement, Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, stepped in to cover the over $100,000 required for the specialised procedure.

At the airport, Lisa’s mother, Georgia Golightly Thompson, expressed her gratitude to Ibrahim Mahama, saying, “Lisa is hopeful and excited. She dreams of getting well and becoming a pediatric oncologist. We’re grateful to Mr. Ibrahim Mahama.”

Lisa traveled aboard an air ambulance, a measure recommended by doctors to ensure her safety and comfort during the long journey.

Ibrahim Mahama, who was present at the airport, personally saw her off, providing emotional support to Lisa and her family.

“We’re confident she’ll return stronger. Doctors in South Africa are ready to begin treatment,” said Rafik Mahama, Special Aide to Ibrahim Mahama.

As the air ambulance took off, carrying Lisa to South Africa, her family stood in prayer, their emotions a mix of tears and hope.

Lisa’s arrival at Wits Donald Gordon Hospital marks a crucial step in her fight against leukaemia, giving her and her family a renewed sense of optimism.

For Lisa’s family, this journey represents hope—hope of recovery, hope for laughter to return to their home, and hope that one day Lisa will achieve her dream of helping others fight cancer.

It is the only glimpse of the 10-year-old they have had in days.

Lisa, who once filled her home with laughter and light, is now battling stage 4 leukemia, a life-threatening cancer of the blood and bone marrow.

Lisa, a student of Lerato Preparatory and JHS in Lartebiokorshie, was known for her love of books and her dream of becoming a pediatrician.

But her vibrant life slowed on October 31, 2024, when what seemed like a simple cold and headache escalated into the unimaginable.

“Lisa went for career day at school, and then my mother was called by the school authorities that Lisa was complaining of body pains.

“On November 1, 2024, she was taken to the hospital for treatment for a common cold and malaria, but upon close examination by the physicians, we were told they were going to admit her.”

Georgia Golightly Thompson further told JoyNews’ Emmanuel Dzivenu, “Later, I was called for counseling at the hospital.

For Georgia and the rest of Lisa’s family, the relief was overwhelming.

Lisa’s aunt, who had tirelessly supported the family throughout this ordeal, expressed her gratitude as well.

Lisa is expected to leave for South Africa on Thursday, November 21, 2024. The family is optimistic that this is the turning point in their young daughter’s battle against cancer.

However, Lisa’s journey is far from over, but her family is no longer fighting alone. Thanks to one man’s compassion, Lisa now has hope – a chance to survive, thrive, and one day become the pediatrician she dreams of being.

The visit marks a significant step in Rosemary Boadu’s journey to recovery as she prepares for her pre-transplant workup, scheduled for Thursday, November 22, 2024.

Rosemary, who has been battling end-stage kidney failure, will undergo a kidney transplant funded by Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, CEO of Engineers & Planners and Dzata Cement. Mr. Mahama fully paid for the $25,000 required for the surgery after hearing Rosemary’s story through a JoyNews feature titled “Dialysis at 13,” produced by Emmanuel Dzivenu.

As part of the visit, Rafik Mahama presented GHS 20,000 to Rosemary and her family to support their upkeep ahead of the medical procedure. Speaking during the visit, he explained Mr. Mahama’s motivation for stepping in to help.

“Rosemary’s story deeply touched my boss’s heart. The very morning he saw the feature, he instructed us to make the payment immediately because he couldn’t bear to see the young girl in pain. By 9 a.m., the transaction was completed.

“Today, I’m here to ensure that the family is ready for the journey ahead. Rosemary is now part of our family, and we pray for her full recovery so she can return to school stronger than ever,” Rafik Mahama said.

He added, “As part of our morning briefing, my boss, Ibrahim Mahama, emphasized the importance of me visiting the family before we begin the process next week. He wanted me to check on them and ensure everything was fine before they left for the hospital. That’s why I came here this morning—to see the family and meet my daughter. I’m very happy to see them.”

“I also want to say that this is something we do all the time. Most of the time, we handle larger health issues quietly, flying people outside the country to seek healthcare. It’s usually only when the media reports on these cases that our interventions become public. We engage in a lot of philanthropic work across various sectors.”

Rosemary, visibly emotional, expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the support.

“I never thought something like this could happen to me. God bless Mr. Ibrahim Mahama and everyone who has supported me. Wherever you took the money from, God will refill it a hundred times. I am so grateful.”

Her mother, Grace Akweley, echoed her gratitude, calling the intervention a miracle that will save her daughter’s life.

“I am forever indebted to Mr. Ibrahim Mahama. He has done more than just help us – he has given my daughter a chance to live. May God richly bless him and everyone who stood by us.”

With the pre-transplant evaluations set to begin this week, the family is optimistic about the journey ahead, buoyed by the support of kind-hearted individuals like Ibrahim Mahama.

Ing. Mahama’s generous $25,000 contribution will cover the kidney transplant that Rosemary desperately needs, transforming years of fear and financial hardship into newfound hope.

Rosemary’s journey began at age 13 when her health issues rapidly escalated into a diagnosis that upended her life. What seemed like minor discomforts soon became a life-altering battle with kidney failure, requiring her to endure twice-weekly dialysis sessions to stay alive.

The treatment, which has sustained her for the past four years, has also placed significant financial strain on her family. Rosemary and her mother had to relocate from the Oti Region to Accra to access treatment at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, relying heavily on donations and enduring the daily uncertainty of how they would fund each dialysis session.

The story of Rosemary’s struggles was brought to light in the JoyNews feature titled Dialysis at 13, produced by Emmanuel Dzivenu, which highlighted the financial and emotional toll on her family and their unending search for help.

Her mother, Grace, recounted the heartbreaking reality of missing treatments when they could not find the funds for transportation or daily necessities like food.

In an interview on Joy Prime’s Changes Show, Grace expressed the overwhelming relief that Mr. Mahama’s support has brought, saying, “God bless everyone who has helped us. I never imagined something like this would happen, making it possible for my child to live like other kids.”

With Mahama’s support, Rosemary will begin pre-transplant evaluations next week, and her family is filled with optimism that this surgery will allow her to live a normal life and return to school. For Rosemary, this intervention brings her closer to achieving her dream of becoming a doctor — a vision inspired by her own medical journey.

Grace also expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed, describing this outpouring of support as more than financial aid but as a beacon of hope for a brighter future.

Mr Awuni in new latest book, “The President Ghana Never Got,” stated that the Universal Merchant Bank (UMB), formerly State-owned Merchant Bank, generated uproar in 2013 when it was sold to a private equity firm, Fortiz.

The journalist indicated that FirstRand Bank of South Africa was said to be willing to pay GH₵176million for 75% of Merchant Bank’s shares, while Fortiz offered only GH₵90million for 90% of the shares in the state-owned bank.

However, Mr Mahama through his lawyers refuted the claim, demanding an immediate retraction and unqualified apology over what he has described as reputational damage.

“The controversy deepened when it emerged that a brother of President John Mahama, Ibrahim Mahama, was one of the big debtors of the then Merchant Bank, which resulted in the bank’s struggles,” portions of the book read.

However, Mr Mahama has refuted the claim, demanding an immediate retraction and unqualified apology over what he has described as reputational damage.

In a letter, his solicitors asserted that the publication has negatively impacted Mr Mahama’s reputation as an honest businessman.

“Your publication has resulted in our client’s business associates, family and friends inquiring from him the veracity of your claims as the publication has lowered his reputation as an honest businessman in the eyes of well-meaning Ghanaians.

“We therefore have the instructions of our client to demand from you an immediate retraction of the publication under reference and an unqualified apology to our client,” part of the letter read.

They have warned that failure to comply with these demands within seven days will result in legal action against Mr Awuni.

Ibrahim Mahama hasn’t told me to delete some pages of my book – Manasseh https://www.adomonline.com/ibrahim-mahama-hasnt-told-me-to-delete-some-pages-of-my-book-manasseh/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 21:46:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2438096 Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has denied some media reports suggesting that the Chief Executive Officer of Engineers & Planners, Ibrahim Mahama, has given him up to seven days to delete some pages of his latest book that tarnishes his image.

Mr Azure said this while responding to a demand from Mr Mahama’s lawyers, asking him to retract and apologise for some false claims he made in his latest book The President Ghana Never Got against him or be sued.

The book suggests that the Universal Merchant Bank (UMB), formerly known as Merchant Bank, faced controversy in 2013 when it was sold to the private equity firm Fortiz.

According to the author, FirstRand Bank of South Africa was said to be willing to pay GH₵176million for 75% of Merchant Bank’s shares, while Fortiz offered only GH₵90million for 90% of the shares in the state-owned bank.

“The controversy deepened when it emerged that a brother of President John Mahama, Ibrahim Mahama, was one of the big debtors of the then Merchant Bank, which resulted in the bank’s struggles,” portions of the book read.

In response to these claims, Mr Ibrahim Mahama, through his solicitors, is demanding a retraction of the publication and an apology, asserting that the information was false.

In response to Mr Mahama, the investigative journalist stood by the claims made in the book, but said he has forwarded the demands of Mr Mahama to his lawyers, and that the matter will soon be addressed.

“I have received calls about the news that Ibrahim Mahama has given me seven days to delete pages 89 and 90 of my book because the information is inaccurate. That is not accurate. Mr. Ibrahim Mahama’s lawyers have written to me concerning a paragraph of the book in the chapter on the economy.

“That paragraph says Ibrahim Mahama was indebted to Merchant Bank when it was sold in 2013. His lawyers say it was a company owned by Ibrahim Mahama, Engineers and Planners, which owed the bank, not Ibrahim Mahama. I have forwarded their demands to my lawyers and the matter will be addressed soon” Mr Azure said.

Ibrahim Mahama dredges blocked waterways in Mepe https://www.adomonline.com/ibrahim-mahama-dredges-blocked-waterways-in-mepe/ Mon, 30 Oct 2023 09:27:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2312067 The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Engineers & Planners and Dzata Cement, Ibrahim Mahama, has commenced the dredging and rechanneling of stagnant water at Mepe.

The work involves the construction of new roads in the Mepe RC-St. Kizito enclave, which was terribly damaged by floods as a result of the Akosombo dam spillage.

Mr Mahama cut the sod for work to begin on Saturday after a generous donation he made to support the flood victims last Tuesday.

Ibrahim Mahama dispatched his engineers, workers, and equipment in fulfillment of a pledge he made to the chiefs and people of the affected communities during his donation of relief items.

Sharing the good news on Facebook, his aide, Rafik Mahama, announced these special works are being carried out at absolutely no financial cost to the affected communities or any other institution.

The sod cutting had in attendance the MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and also all the chiefs and queen mothers of the Mepe community. Mr Mahama was represented by his aide.

Rafik eulogised helping the needy and giving back to society is one act his boss does with passion and dedication.

He added that they’re working to extend similar support to those affected by the dam spillage in the Oti Region and the Northern Regions.

The Chiefs thanked Mr Mahama and his team for honouring the promise, adding that the dredging will allow the water to move freely from the flooded areas and help them recover from the disaster.

The MP for the area, Mr Ablakwa also thanked Ibrahim Mahama and his team for this unique intervention.

He said they will forever be grateful to him for helping them with massive relief items and also now helping them to dredge the stagnant contaminated flood waters and also create pathways for the flood waters to be re-channeled.

Mr Mahama is set to fly the doctor of optometry student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) who is suffering from bipolar disorder 2 to South Africa for treatment.

Mr Mahama, through his aide, Rafik Mahama, last week promised the best medical care to Leonard and also help him complete his remaining two years of the six years programme at KNUST.

The aide indicated Mr Mahama will also support Leonard’s post-graduate studies either in Ghana or abroad and he will be given the best of all the support he needs.

Giving updates on the intervention on Facebook, Rafik said Leonard at the request of Mr Mahama has been brought from Jirapa in the Upper West Region to Accra to commence his treatment.

Rafik announced as part of the treatment Leonard will be flown to South Africa where arrangements have been made for special care and treatment.

The 33-year-old had to discontinue his education due to his mental health issues.

But for this health issue in 2012, Leonard ought to have been a working optometrist like many of his schoolmates.

Ibrahim Mahama’s aircrafts fly Tamale’s children closer to their dreams https://www.adomonline.com/ibrahim-mahamas-aircrafts-fly-tamales-children-closer-to-their-dreams/ Tue, 09 Aug 2022 10:38:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2147394 The aircraft sitting at peace on the greenery in eerie quietness seems at odds with the thatch-roofed mud houses of Jenna village.

It’s almost like two worlds converging in one place.

The red dirt road in between the community and the park where the aircraft are parked goes as far as the eye can see. Tricycles passing by occasionally send thick clouds of dust billowing into the sky.

Jenna- a village of under 2,000 people- is just on the outskirts of Tamale- the capital of Ghana’s Northern Region. And it is home to Red Clay Studios, a towering space built with red bricks that houses a variety of art installations made mainly from recycled materials that have been redesigned into antique pieces of art.

It is owned by celebrated Ghanaian artist, Ibrahim Mahama.

The aircraft, sitting miles away from the closest runway, has become the new centre of attraction, bringing dozens of tourists every day from far and near to this otherwise unknown village.

Abdul-Latif Zakaria, 16 years, is one of the many children from nearby villages who spend time at Red Clay learning about planes and their arts. “Many of the people who live in Jenna have not seen aeroplanes before. They only see it in the sky. Now, they can come here and even sit in a plane,” he says.

Zakaria came to Red Clay because of his father who was one of the first to be employed as the centre’s compound caretaker. He spends the days away from school learning to fly drones, reading about the parts of the aircraft and how to fly it.

“This is a great place. Many of the children who come here go back with smiles. They learn. They learn a lot of things,” he says.

Like him, several other children from Jenna fill the spaces at Red Clay on weekends and after school hours to admire the beauty of the arts and ask questions about how planes work.

“When I was finishing University, I asked myself; is it possible to come back here to build a studio that could inspire young people?” that was the question that Ibrahim Mahama put to himself when he was leaving the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology where he studied for his degree in Fine Arts.

Mahama grew up largely in southern Ghana. He attended some of the country’s best schools. But he was born in the northern regional capital, Tamale where many other children from his generation and those before, saw going to school as a distant luxury.

His father, a civil engineer, one of the very first in northern Ghana, helped build many of the roads there and still lives in Tamale while his mother lives in Accra.

As an artist, Ibrahim is world-celebrated. His works have been exhibited at some of the most prestigious platforms; from the Biennales of Sydney and Venice through the University of Manchester, Documenta 14, Michigan (USA) to the Congo and Tel Aviv, Israel.

In 2018, he met a Swiss-German friend in Accra who had brought a World War 1 model plane to Ghana to fly as a hobby.

He had been denied permit by Ghana’s airspace authorities and so the plane had been left on the tarmac at the Kotoka International Airport for years.

When Ibrahim mentioned his plans to bring old aircrafts for his studio in Tamale, the idea clicked with his new-found friend and he got gifted the abandoned plane.

“We put the entire plane in a tow truck and drove it all the way from Accra to Tamale,” says Mahama.

It used to be the case that the art studios were seen as a place where the artist is at peace and in solitude with himself to create ideas but for Ibrahim, he wants to build something that allows for “a point of reflection, a place where ideas are born and where history comes to life in a very different way”.

In March 2019, Ibrahim opened the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA) as an artist-run project space in Tamale.

Red Clay, named after its exact make and look, is an exhibition space home to research facilities and an artist-residency hub. In Mahama’s own words, this is his contribution to the development and expansion of the contemporary art scene in northern Ghana where art is largely underdeveloped despite its huge potential.

In April 2021, he opened a renovated silo, named it Nkrumah Volini- meaning Nkrumah’s hole- after Ghana’s first President.

“I am not just thinking about artists. I am thinking about thinkers. So that 30 years from now, those thinkers would not make the same mistakes that we made,” he says.

At its heart, the red brick walls at Red Clay hide breathtaking pieces of art installations around different themes. Like The Parliament of Ghosts.
This was originally shown as an installation at the Whitworth Art Gallery, as part of the Manchester International Festival (2019).

The Parliament of Ghosts is a space with four walls and a recreation of the British Parliament with a pool of water in the middle and a lush field of corn planted all around. With this, he is hoping to re-examine the role of modern parliamentary chambers in today’s lived life and also be able to change narratives around political discourse.

In the Parliament of Ghosts, Ibrahim wants people to come in and “examine the state of the places where they live or come from versus the conditions of the places where their governments live and work from”.

Inside another chamber, he has collected hundreds of old and discarded shoemaking boxes and the many locally made tools that cobblers use.

These boxes were previously owned and used by mostly young men who travel from many smaller Ghanaian villages and communities to come work as shoe repairers in bigger cities like Accra and Kumasi.

To get them to Tamale, he had to physically go out and negotiate for them across the country and take with him items contained in these boxes like heels, hammers, brushes, needles, pieces of leather and shoe stockings.

He then has to stitch all of them together into a giant monument almost the size of six passenger vans. He calls this installation Non-Orientable Nkansah.

To go with this work, he adds a series of jute sack paintings, taken from some of the bags that are used to cart cocoa- one of the country’s top exports- distiled into larger architectural showpieces. The morale of this work, according to Ibrahim, is to show how labour and commodities are moved around the world and how that could impact people and livelihoods.

In the shade of the installation’s towering look, Ibrahim speaks to a dozen of children from Jenna who are on a tour.

“This place is for you. It is for you to imagine to be able to do what people see today as impossible,” he tells them in the local Dagbani language.

“I am really interested in the different points of imagination that are borne out of the voids that we create …it allows for certain questions to be raised within the minds of the kids that would ordinarily not be raised if they sat in the square blocks they are used to,” says Mahama.

“I really do not know those questions (and) what they would produce in the future but the most important thing is that it produces different forms of thinking rather than the ones that we inherited,”

It was in 2020, at the height of the covid-19 pandemic, that Mahama moved the planes he had gotten from his Swiss friend to Tamale. Five years before that, Mahama, now 35, earned a million dollars from the sale of his artwork, he decided to purchase some more jettisoned planes left on the tarmac of Tamale’s only airport. He moved all of them together to start his aeroplane installation at Red Clay.

“We want this place to be a safe haven for the artist. To learn about the past, present and future. A site for dialogue and debate, taking historical failures as a starting point for the creation of new ideals, value systems and economic change,” he says.

Mahama thinks of himself as a lucky person. And it is the reason why he is hoping to bring back his work here to try and support young people to attain the highest possible heights.

“If you look at the relationship between the north and south, it doesn’t really make sense. There’s so much wealth in the south but the further north you go, the poorer it becomes,” he says.

The Northern Region, where he comes from, has the lowest level of school attendance of children of primary school age at just 59.4 per cent of children in all of Ghana’s 16 regions. It also has the lowest female literacy rate in the country at 44.3 per cent of young women aged 15–24 years according to the United Nations Children’s Fund.

It is statistics like these that have impoverished communities like Jenna- a trend that could hopefully change if interventions like Red Clay succeed in building up the confidence of young people to be the best, they could possibly be by going and staying in school.

“The children in this village suffer more. We walk to school every day. I think that in the cities, their parents always send them to school,” says Zakaria.

Since Red Clay opened, the young people in the surrounding villages like Jenna who come to see its beauty, say they now have an urge to learn and aspire to many things including a career in aviation.

Like 13 years old Seidu Hadija, whose senior sister fell out of school as a teenager so he could be married off to a man identified by her father. Children- especially girls- have very little motivation to go to school. She remains in school and at her age, she has a year to complete Junior High School.

“When I come to Red Clay, I see a plane and its parts. I used to see planes in the sky now the plane is sitting in my village. I am learning about the parts of the plane and now, I want to be a pilot,” she says.

“It’s not just the children of Tamale. It is for children all over the country. I am hoping that eventually, this thing will go all around the country in different forms and help to reshape the way they think about the world and how they see themselves in the global space,” he says.

Extend 1D1F benefits to Dzata cement – Majority Leader https://www.adomonline.com/extend-1d1f-benefits-to-dzata-cement-majority-leader/ Mon, 27 Jun 2022 17:27:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2131184 Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has urged the government to extend benefits of the One District One Factory (ID1F) initiative to Dzata Cement, a wholly owned Ghanaian firm, to spur the growth of the company.

Firms under 1D1F enjoy a range of financial support, including equity investment, long and short-term trade, and asset financing, in addition to business support services, assistance with regulatory and legal compliance from the government.

Speaking to journalists after leading members of the joint committees of Trade and Industry and Works and Housing in Parliament, on a facility tour of the company in Tema on Thursday, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said such offers would enable the company expand and employ more Ghanaians.

He also wants Dzata Cement to be exempted from levies and duties paid on import of equipment as part of the expansion drive, noting that though the company is at its infant stage, it currently employs 400 direct workers with over 3,000 agents and distributors across the country.

“So many people depend on this factory and certainly it is lifting them out of poverty. And this is what Ghana requires at this time, especially post-COVID and the Ukraine debacle,” he stated.

“It takes a lot of financial capital. If interest rates are high, it will not help him. It is for this reason we should all try to bring some stability in the financial setting. Again, production so much depends on power that is generated and sold to them,” he asserted.

He continued: “If the cost of power is high, it will certainly affect the cost of cement. Today, the ex-factory price of a bag of cement, I am told, is GH¢55. I want to believe that if the cost of power was low, certainly the cost of the product would also come down.”

For him, Dzata Cement ought to be assisted in order to overcome some of its teething problems, asserting, “because cement really is at the heart of the construction business. We all know the deficit of housing in the country is in excess of 1.5 million and we need cement to do the construction.

“What can be done by Parliament to assist the company to expand and employ Ghanaians as well as offer the system greater resilience for the economy so that we will be able to overcome the occasional sneezing from the West and China,” he pinned.

The Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, who was part of the team, praised the company for exemplifying the Ghanaian entrepreneurship, while he also called for support for Dzata Cement.

Executive Director of Dzata Cement, Ibrahim Mahama, said he had plans to expand production, disclosing that the company intends to construct eight additional silos within phase two and three at estimated costs of $32 million and $48 million.

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong has finally broken his silence on allegations that, he received a car as a gift from businessman, Ibrahim Mahama.

The gift from the brother of former President John Mahama, they claim was to ensure the NPP remains in opposition.

But Kwabena Agyepong in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show Wednesday, stated unequivocally that, such wild allegation was fabricated from the pit of hell.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi made the allegation.

He claimed in a radio interview that, Mr. Agyepong prior to the 2016 election received a plush car from Ibrahim Mahama, younger brother of Mr. Mahama to work against his own party.

“Kwabena Agyapong when he was General Secretary, stooped so low by collecting a plush car from Ibrahim Mahama with the motive of working against the NPP so that the NDC would win the 2016 elections on a silver platter”, Wontumi reportedly said on October 28, 2016.

But Kwabena Agyepong said the allegation was part of a grand scheme to get him out of office.

According to him, they said among other things that, even his wife was given government scholarship abroad by the Mahama government when in fact, it was late former President Mills who was President.

“I heard that a car I was using was given to me by Ibrahim Mahama. They even said my wife was given a scholarship to study outside but my wife went to do her PHD in 2012 when Mills was the President. They were propaganda against me” he bemoaned.

I never demanded return of Ibrahim’s bauxite concession – Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/i-never-demanded-return-of-ibrahims-bauxite-concession-mahama/ Thu, 08 Apr 2021 18:20:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1945611 Former President John Mahama has refuted reports that he is demanding that President Nana Akufo-Addo returns his brother’s bauxite concession before he gets along with him.

In a statement Thursday signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, he explained that the 2020 National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer has ever made such a demand.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu said the reports are “nothing but a figment of the imagination” of those making the claims.

He said in the aftermath of the election petition, Mr Mahama had made it clear that although he disagrees with the judgement, ” he was nonetheless bound by the verdict.”

The former Deputy Information Minister said Mr Mahama, “has remained a statesman and remained true to his commitments to multiparty democracy.”

There are reports that one of the reasons why Mr Mahama does not appear to ‘gel’ with President Akufo-Addo and his administration is because of the bauxite concession that the New Patriotic Party government took from Ibrahim Mahama in 2017.

The NDC leader is said to have made some demands before letting the Minority Caucus in Parliament act jointly with their Majority counterpart since they both have 137 members each.

Chief among the demands was the return of the Nyinahin Bauxite concession in the Ashanti Region.

The multi-billion long lease bauxite concession was granted to Exton Cubic a few days prior to Mr Mahama handing over power on December 29, 2016.

Although the company tried to start operations, it was stopped by both the district and regional authorities, compelling Exton Cubic to go to court to challenge the decision.

Since then, there have been a lot of legal battles regarding the right of the company to mine.

This development, reports have suggested, is the reason why the former President does not see eye to eye with his successor.

But his Office has questioned: “What form of ‘gel’ does the government want with former President Mahama, and for which reason he will even consider making any demand?”

It said being the true statesman that he is, Mr Mahama will “continue to have respect for the constitutional structures and has at no time made any request, nor suggested any conditions, let alone ask for the return of bauxite concessions by any person or entity as a precondition for cooperation.”
