According to him, deep-rooted internal divisions within the NPP played a major role in the party’s defeat in the last general election and must be resolved if the party is to return to power.

Dr. Acheampong made the remarks while addressing party delegates in the Obom, Amasaman and Trobu constituencies on Saturday, January 17, 2026, during the second and final day of his Greater Accra Regional campaign ahead of the party’s flagbearer race.

Recalling events after the party’s defeat, he said internal wrangling even disrupted a planned Thank You Tour.

“Remember, we lost the last election and were on our way for just a Thank You Tour. Even that, we were not able to complete because of petty fights. Some people were dropped from the bus and told that utterances from their mouths contributed to our loss,” he told delegates.

Dr. Acheampong questioned whether the party could genuinely unite behind other leading contenders should they win the flagbearership.

“I have this question for you all, and it is because we are all seeking power. Who among you believes that if Kennedy Agyapong wins, Abronye DC and the supporters of Dr. Bawumia would support him for us to win power?” he asked.

He raised similar concerns about a possible victory by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, arguing that divisions within the party would persist.

“What about when the situation is vice versa in the case of Dr. Bawumia? I am the only one who can unify this party for victory in 2028,” he said.

Dr. Acheampong urged delegates to rally behind his leadership, insisting that his candidacy offers the NPP its best chance of reclaiming power in the next general election.

“You all know that if we push these two, we will struggle to win power. Present me, let me win that power for our party,” he added.

63 NPP MPs declare support for Bawumia ahead of presidential primary https://www.adomonline.com/63-npp-mps-declare-support-for-bawumia-ahead-of-presidential-primary/ Thu, 23 Oct 2025 15:30:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2591721 As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential race intensifies, 63 Members of Parliament have publicly declared their support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

At a press conference in Parliament, the MPs described Dr. Bawumia as the most capable candidate to lead the NPP to victory and reclaim power from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2028.

Speaking on behalf of the group, the MP for Mampong, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, revealed that all 63 MPs voluntarily signed a declaration of support for Dr. Bawumia.

Among those named were Frank Annoh-Dompreh (Nsawam-Adoagyiri), Frank Asiedu Bekoe (Suhum), John Ntim Fordjour (Assin South), and Ekow Vincent Assafuah (Tafo).

The MP for Trobu, who is also part of the “NPP MPs for Dr. Bawumia” group, said their decision was based on Dr. Bawumia’s proven leadership, competence, and vision to unite the party and advance Ghana’s development.

MP makes damning allegations against Hannah Bissiw [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/mp-makes-damning-allegations-against-hannah-bissiw-listen/ Fri, 18 Jul 2025 10:52:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556871 Trobu Member of Parliament (MP) Gloria Owusu has alleged that the Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund (MDF), Dr. Hannah Louisa Bissiw-Kotei, may be complicit in the alleged disappearance of 33 seized excavators.

Dr. Bissiw-Kotei, who also serves as the National Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), recently revealed that 33 out of 40 excavators seized during an anti-galamsey operation had gone missing.

According to her, the machines were initially left at the illegal mining sites due to the absence of lowbed trucks for transportation. However, upon returning the next day, only seven machines remained.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, MP Gloria Owusu questioned the credibility of that account, claiming that there are widespread allegations suggesting Dr. Bissiw-Kotei facilitates the release of the seized excavators to their owners in exchange for bribes.

“How is it that Hannah Bissiw will go and seize excavators, and then within 24 hours, she will come and tell us 33 are missing? The allegation is that she takes GH¢200,000 from the excavator owners and releases them,” the lawmaker claimed.

Calls are growing for a full-scale investigation into the matter as public concern mounts over accountability in the fight against illegal mining.

Trobu MP demands answers from Hannah Bissiw over ‘missing’ driver [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/trobu-mp-demands-answers-from-hannah-bissiw-over-missing-driver-listen/ Fri, 18 Jul 2025 09:53:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556838 The Member of Parliament for Trobu Constituency, Gloria Owusu, has raised concerns over the unexplained disappearance of Clement Ofori Addo, a man she claims was recently employed as a driver by National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Women’s Organiser, Dr. Hannah Bissiw.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the MP alleged that Mr. Addo was dismissed from his job about four days ago. Since then, none of his family members have seen or heard from him, she said.

“I want to ask Hannah Bissiw where her driver, Clement, is. At the moment, Hannah Bissiw is out of the country, and his driver is nowhere to be found. In due course, Ghanaians will hear from his family. Even if he has committed an offence, where is he?” Mrs. Owusu questioned.

The MP further drew parallels with a past incident involving former Deputy Communications Minister Victoria Hammah, whose private conversations were leaked by her driver, suggesting that the current situation may also warrant public scrutiny.

She, however, urged Mr. Addo to reach out to his family if his disappearance was voluntary.

The circumstances surrounding the driver’s disappearance remain unclear.

Ntrobuman SHS cries for dining hall, completion of abandoned projects https://www.adomonline.com/ntrobuman-shs-cries-for-dining-hall-completion-of-abandoned-projects/ Wed, 15 Jan 2025 16:37:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2493378 In a heartfelt appeal, school authorities and students of Ntrobuman Senior High School in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region have expressed concerns over the lack of adequate facilities, particularly the urgent need for a dining hall and the completion of abandoned boys’ dormitories.

The school, which has been a beacon of education in the area, is struggling with overcrowded classrooms and insufficient accommodation for its students and staff.

On a visit to the school, Adom News correspondent Obrempongba Owusu observed that the absence of a proper dining hall has forced students to eat their meals in makeshift arrangements under trees.

Uncompleted Projects

The assistant headmaster of academics, Michael Kwame Mottey, emphasized that a proper dining hall is essential for fostering a conducive learning environment, as it would provide students with a dedicated space to nourish themselves and socialize.

Adding to the frustration was the stalled construction of boys’ dormitories, a project that has been abandoned for years.

According to him, the incomplete facility, which was meant to serve as a multi-purpose space, stands as a stark reminder of the government’s unfulfilled promises to the school community.

Uncompleted projectsMichael Kwame Mottey, Assistant Headmaster of Academics, Ntrobuman SHS

He noted that as Ntrobuman SHS continues to strive for excellence in education, the urgent need for a dining hall and the completion of the abandoned project remains critical for the well-being and success of its students.

The assistant headmaster called on the government and stakeholders to prioritize the completion of these projects, highlighting that they could significantly enhance the school’s capacity to provide essential services to its students.

At an event held in Goaso, where young people showcased their creative business concepts, Kofi Sam Foster, CEO of Digital Foundation, noted the rising youth unemployment in the region.

He explained that the government, in partnership with private organizations, is working to train individuals aged 18 to 35 to enhance their entrepreneurial skills and refine their business ideas.

“The training will equip participants with the necessary knowledge and open doors for them in the job market. With the financial support provided, they will also be able to employ others, thereby reducing unemployment,” he stated.

Loice Awotwe, the Programs Manager, elaborated on the progress made under the Young African Innovators initiative in the Ahafo Region, emphasizing the program’s impact on nurturing entrepreneurial talent and creating opportunities for the youth.

NDC candidate heads to court over Trobu parliamentary election results https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-candidate-heads-to-court-over-trobu-parliamentary-election-results/ Sun, 15 Dec 2024 21:40:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2484028 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Trobu, Dr. John Kofi Halm, has filed a Parliamentary Election Petition, contesting the validity of the recent parliamentary election held in the constituency.

Dr. Halm claims that the election held on December 7 was marred by up to 98 irregularities across 288 polling stations.

He argued that the process did not comply with Regulation 39 of the Public Elections Regulations, 2000 (C.I. 127), as well as its guiding principles.

As part of the petition, he is seeking an order to nullify the election results from the 98 affected polling stations and to mandate a rerun in those areas.

Furthermore, he has requested the court to prevent the Clerk of Parliament from swearing in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Gloria Owusu, who was declared the winner by the Electoral Commission.

We’ll resist attempt to temper seats won by NPP – Frimpong Kodua https://www.adomonline.com/well-resist-attempt-to-temper-seats-won-by-npp-frimpong-kodua/ Mon, 09 Dec 2024 14:30:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2481482 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has cautioned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to desist from interfering with constituencies won by the NPP during the ongoing electoral process.

The warning was issued at a press conference in Accra on Sunday by Justin Frimpong Kodua, the NPP’s General Secretary, amidst rising tensions and reported unrest at several collation centers.

Mr. Kodua accused NDC supporters of engaging in violent behaviour in constituencies such as Damongo, Ablekuma North, Techiman South, and others, claiming these actions were attempts to dispute NPP’s victories.

“The NPP has with great concern taken notice of the violent conduct of NDC thugs at some constituency collation centers, including Damongo, Ablekuma North, Techiman South, Aowin, Obuasi East, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Fanteakwa North, Ahafo Ano North, Ahafo Ano South West, Akwatia, Trobu, and Tema Central,” Kodua stated.

He reiterated that, the party’s internal data confirms the NPP’s victories in these constituencies and condemned the alleged attempts by the NDC to challenge the results.

“We vehemently condemn these attacks and serve notice that we shall resist any attempt to tamper with the results of the parliamentary elections in these constituencies,” he added.

The NPP called on the leadership of the NDC to publicly denounce the acts of violence and urge their supporters to maintain peace.

Mr. Kodua also appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to ensure law and order at collation centers and to protect the rights and safety of all citizens.

“Mr. IGP, we believe you have seen what is happening at the various collation centers. As a political party, we are calling on you to maintain law and order and ensure the rights and safety of all citizens are protected. We must not allow illegal acts of looting and intimidation,” Kodua stated.

He concluded by urging all stakeholders to uphold peace and respect the integrity of the electoral process, emphasizing the need for calm and restraint.

Maintain law and order at various collation centres – NPP to Police https://www.adomonline.com/maintain-law-and-order-at-various-collation-centres-npp-to-police/ Sun, 08 Dec 2024 20:09:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2481193 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has appealed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Ghana Police Service to ensure law and order at collation centres across the country amid growing tensions and unrest during the ongoing electoral process.

At a press conference in Accra on Sunday, Justin Frimpong Kodua, the General Secretary of the NPP, emphasized the need for peace and order to guarantee a smooth and transparent collation of election results.

He urged the police to deploy sufficient personnel to key locations and intensify patrols to prevent any disruptions that could undermine the integrity of the election process.

Mr. Kodua also called on all political parties and their supporters to remain calm and adhere to the rule of law. He stressed the importance of cooperating with security agencies to maintain a peaceful and orderly collation process.

“The NPP is deeply concerned about the violent actions of NDC supporters at various collation centres, including Damongo, Ablekuma North, Techiman South, Aowin, Obuasi East, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Fanteakwa North, Ahafo Ano North, Ahafo Ano South West, Akwatia, Trobu, and Tema Central,” Kodua stated.

He further asserted that the data leading to their flagbearer’s concession this morning clearly shows the NPP won in these constituencies.

However, he accused the NDC of refusing to accept their loss and attempting to pressure the Electoral Commission (EC) to manipulate the results.

“We strongly condemn these attacks and warn that we will resist any efforts to alter the parliamentary election results in these constituencies,” Kodua declared. He urged the IGP to take action, saying, “We trust that you have seen what is happening at the various collation centres. As a political party, the NPP is calling on you to ensure law and order is maintained.”

Kodua also called for the protection of citizens’ rights and safety, emphasizing that illegal activities such as looting and intimidation should not be allowed.

He urged the leadership of the NDC to rein in their supporters and denounce acts of violence.

2024 polls: Gloria Owusu vows to transform Trobu Constituency https://www.adomonline.com/2024-polls-gloria-owusu-vows-to-transform-trobu-constituency/ Thu, 26 Sep 2024 12:47:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2453552 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary candidate for Trobu Constituency, Gloria Owusu, has pledged her commitment to improve the lives of her constituents ahead of the upcoming elections.

Addressing key issues, she emphasized that water scarcity remains the constituency’s major problem, and in response, she has initiated the drilling of 30 boreholes across various parts of Trobu.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem on Thursday, Ms Owusu revealed that she successfully lobbied the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to address the poor state of roads, with ongoing projects currently underway.

“Our major problem in the constituency is water. As a parliamentary candidate, I have initiated the drilling of 30 boreholes in various parts of the constituency. Additionally, I have lobbied the Vice President, Dr. Bawumia, for our roads to be fixed, and he has initiated the plans which are currently underway,” she said.

Madam Gloria highlighted her passion for supporting the Free SHS policy and her annual contributions to first-year students, providing provisions and financial aid.

She also promised to build a state-of-the-art library to serve students in the constituency.

“I am very interested in education, which is why I always support Akufo Addo for his free SHS policy. Every year, I provide first-year free SHS students with provisions and money. We also have a community library for students to go and learn after school. I will also build a magnificent library to cater to all students in the Trobo constituency because the best BECE students come from my constituency.”

On youth empowerment, Ms Gloria disclosed that 2,362 young people, particularly school dropouts and women aged 18 to 35, have been trained in vocational skills such as soap making, makeup, and hairdressing, with startup items distributed to support their businesses.

She further expressed confidence in securing 100,000 votes for the NPP and also assured that no household would be left out in her campaign efforts.

“I am urging all eligible voters in the Trobu Constituency to vote for the New Patriotic Party in the upcoming elections. I am aiming to secure about 100,000 votes, an increase from the over 66,000 votes the President received in the 2020 elections. Over 40,000 people did not vote last year, so we are making efforts to reach every household and ensure no one is left out. I am very confident of winning the elections,” she stated.

Fishers want premix fuel subsidy removed – Study https://www.adomonline.com/fishers-want-premix-fuel-subsidy-removed-study/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 12:59:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450554 About 91 per cent of fishers sampled across the coastal communities have agreed to the total removal of subsidies on premix fuel meant to ease the burden on them.

According to preliminary findings of the study, the fishers maintained that the government should rather channel the funds used for the subsidies to provide alternative livelihoods for young people across the fishing communities.

Also, per the findings of the study conducted by the Environment and Natural Resource Research Initiative (ENRRI – EfD Ghana), the current regime had created a system where the product was diverted or hoarded for the benefit of a few people, rather than making it accessible to many artisanal fisher folks, and for that reason must be deregulated to promote fairness and equality in the market.

Study, seminar

The study was on the premix fuel policy in Ghana. It covered views from more than 700 fishers from 22 landing sites across the country’s four coastal regions, including Greater Accra, Volta, Central and Western regions.

The outcome was shared at the EfD Ghana Seminar held at the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) of the University of Ghana in Accra last Monday.

The seminar, on the theme: “Is premix fuel subsidy in Ghana’s artisanal fishery desirable?”, brought together key stakeholders to discuss critical issues within the country’s fisheries sector.

The discussions sought to address the challenges with premix fuel subsidy in Ghana’s artisanal fishery, including presenting preliminary results on its desirability.

Findings

Touching on the findings of the study, the Director at EfD Ghana, Prof. Wisdom Akpalu, stated that nearly all respondents advocated the removal of subsidies for fishing activities.

“Out of 700 fisher folks, 91 per cent of them agreed to the withdrawal of the subsidy,” he said.

He said instead of subsidising the fuel, which could make it easier for more people to continue fishing in the seas and ultimately deplete stock, the government should channel the funds into providing alternative livelihoods for young people in fishing communities.

That, he said, would help reduce the stress on fish stock and make the closed season initiative introduced by the government through the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture more sustainable and achieve its intended purpose.

He added that the study showed the fishermen and fish traders were willing to pay approximately GH¢83 and GH¢87 per gallon of the premix fuel, respectively.

Gradual approach
Commending the findings of the report, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Trobu Constituency and a former Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Moses Anim, proposed a gradual approach to phase out the subsidy regime rather than immediate removal of premix fuel.
He explained that the government had over the years implemented several initiatives to enhance the effective and efficient management of premix fuel.

He said automated initiatives had helped to improve data on fishers, determine the actual premix consumption, monitor the distribution and sale of premix fuel, reduce the complex payment processes and eliminate premix fuel diversions.

“We are now using a condensate, which replaced nearly 47 per cent of gasoline meant for processing premix fuel in the past. Due to this, the government’s subsidy on premix has been reduced by 39 per cent,” he said.

Address accessibility

The Director of ISSER, Prof. Peter Quartey, noted that the fisher folks were pushing for the withdrawal of the subsidies due to the challenges associated with accessibility, but might protest once implemented.

“So, I think their call for withdrawal is out of frustration because the product is not always available for them to access.

“I am sure the fisher folks would not want a subsidy that absorbs nearly 70 per cent of their cost of operations to be taken away if it is beneficial to all of them,” he said.

He added that there was a need for digitalisation to streamline the subsidy regime, eliminate middleman exploitation, and ensure efficiency and transparency.

Speaking on Constituency Watch on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen, Mr Dokurgu touted himself as an Effia homeboy who has a good relationship with constituents.

With him as the NDC’s candidate, he emphasised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Isaac Boamah stand no chance.

“I am the next MP for Effia and I can tell you I’m the next MP. My opponent stand no chance in the contest. From the analysis I have done and my engagement with constituents, if elections are conducted today, I will win,” he declared.

The high spirited candidate stated he is credible and capable candidate who can win voters on both sides of the political divide.

When asked by show host, Osei Bonsu (OB) the margin with which he can win, Dokurgu replied, “Margins doesn’t matter. It is the win and I will be the next MP. The NPP themselves know this is a swing seat and not their stronghold. I am a homeboy; these are my people. I have school mates, people I have played football with and a whole lot.”

The seat is currently being held by the NPP with Joseph Cudjoe as the Member of Parliament(MP).

Amasaman Constituency Watch: NPP, NDC tout major infrastructural successes https://www.adomonline.com/amasaman-constituency-watch-npp-ndc-tout-major-infrastructural-successes/ Fri, 09 Aug 2024 20:13:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2431751

With barely four months to the 2024 election, both parliamentary candidates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Amasaman constituency believe they are the best choice to lead.

Both candidates on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen constituency watch touted their respective parties have diligently served constituents.

In the build up to the election, this segment provides a platform for candidates to present their policies to constituents for a clearer understanding and to win their votes.

The December 7 election will be a fierce race between the NPP’s Kassim Yahya and the NDC’s Sedem Afenyo.

With the incumbent Member of Parliament, Akwasi Owusu Afriyie on the NPP’s ticket, Mr Kassim is poised to retain the seat for his party and change the narrative of the NDC’s dominance.

As an entrepreneur, Mr Kassim, the Chief Executive Officer of KAS Estate Company Limited touted that, he has created employment for some young people through five businesses including real estate as well as Mother FM and TV stations.

He among other things stated he has also procured a grader to fix roads in the constituency and in the area of education, is currently building a school which will enroll 8,000 pupils at Doblo-Gonno.

The NPP PC noted it would be free to cushion SHS students from Kotoku, Akramaman, Amasaman and its environs.

However, the NDC’s Sedem Afenyo was convinced her party had a superior track record than the NPP, a reason they have occupied the seat for many years.

Personally, Mr Afenyo said he created jobs by donating sewing machines to young people in the constituency, among others.

Despite losing the parliamentary election to the incumbent MP in 2020, Mr Afenyo is optimistic he will snatch the seat for the NDC.

To him, the NPP’s record was nowhere near the NDC and deserve another opportunity to do more for the people of Amasaman.

The man who turned his dead father into a chatbot https://www.adomonline.com/the-man-who-turned-his-dead-father-into-a-chatbot/ Thu, 16 May 2024 07:59:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2395644 Back in 2016, James Vlahos received some terrible news – his father was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

“I loved my dad, I was losing my dad,” says James, who is based in Oakland, California.

He was determined to make the most of the remaining time he had with his father. “I did an oral history project with him, where I just spent hours, and hours, and hours just audio recording his life story.”

This coincided with a time when James was starting to explore a career in AI, so his project soon evolved.

“I thought, gosh, what if I could make something interactive out of this?” he says. “For a way to more richly keep his memories, and some sense of his personality, which was so wonderful, to keep that around.”

James’ father John passed away in 2017, but not before James had turned what he’d recorded into an AI-powered chatbot that could answer questions about his dad’s life – in his father’s voice.

James Vlahos spent hours recording the memories of his dad John (James Vlahos)

Such use of AI to artificially bring people back to life has long been explored in science fiction, but developments in AI technology have now made it possible in real life. In 2019, James turned his chatbot into an app and business called HereafterAI, which allows users to do the same for their loved ones.

He adds that while the chatbot didn’t remove the pain of his dad’s death, it does gives him “more than I otherwise would have”. “It’s not him retreating into this very fuzzy memory. I have this wonderful interactive compendium I can turn to.”

While users of HearafterAI can upload photos of their loved one, to appear on the screen of their smart phone or computer when they use the app, another firm that turns people into AI chatbots goes much further.

South Korea’s DeepBrain AI creates a video-based avatar of a person, by shooting hours of video and audio to capture their face, voice and mannerisms.

“We are cloning the person’s likeness to 96.5% of the similarity of the original person,” says Michael Jung, DeepBrain’s chief financial officer. “So mostly the family don’t feel uncomfortable talking with the deceased family member, even though it is an AI avatar.”

The company believes such technology can be an important part of developing a “well dying” culture – where we prepare for our death in advance, leaving family histories, stories and memories as a form of “living legacy”.

The process isn’t cheap though, and users cannot create the avatar themselves. Instead, they have to pay the firm up to $50,000 (£39,000) for the filming process and the creation of their avatar.

Despite this high cost, some investors are confident it will be popular, and DeepBrain raised $44m in its last funding round.

Yet psychologist Laverne Antrobus says that great care should be taken when using such “grief tech” at times of heightened emotion.

“Loss is something that catches us out,” she says. “You can think you’re pretty much close to being OK, then something can take you right back.

“Loss is something that catches us out,” she says. “You can think you’re pretty much close to being OK, then something can take you right back.

“The idea that you might then have the opportunity to hear their voice, and hear their words spoken through them, might be quite discombobulating.”

Ms Antrobus adds that people shouldn’t rush to use a chatbot of a lost loved one. “You’d have to feel quite solid before using something like this. Take things very, very slowly.”

The way we grieve is specific to each of us, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t common experiences.

Red tape is one of them. Banks, businesses and social media sites that your loved one used will need you to complete a raft of paperwork to close accounts, and end direct debits, subscriptions and the like.

“I was looking at more than two dozen companies, and having to phone every single one of them and tell them about my loss,” says Eleanor Wood, 41, from South Devon. Her husband Stephen died in March of last year after a serious illness.

“Some of the firms were great and straightforward. Some were outright incompetent and callous. They created more stress and emotional distress at a time when I was already at my lowest possible emotional ebb.”

To lessen the administrative burden of the recently bereaved, Settld is a UK online platform that contacts private sector organisations on their behalf.

The user uploads the required paperwork, and the list of everyone that needs to be contacted. Settld then automatically writes and sends off the emails. You can then log back in to check that the firms in question have replied, and that the issues have been dealt with.

It works with 950 bodies ranging from banks, to social media firms, to utility companies. It was co-founded in 2020 by Vicky Wilson following the death of her grandmother.

“The more we can do to use technology to lift that admin burden, the better,” she says.” When someone dies, to deal with the average estate, we’re looking at around 300 hours across 146 tasks.

“It normally takes around nine months to wrap up. We reckon around 70% of that work can and should be automated.”

The grief tech sector, also called “death tech”, is now valued at more than £100bn globally, according to tech news website TechRound.

This growth was fuelled by the coronavirus pandemic, says David Soffer, its editor-in-chief.

Dadieso residents block Accra-Kumasi highway after tanker accident [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/nnadieso-residents-block-accra-kumasi-highway-after-tanker-accident-video/ Sat, 04 May 2024 14:26:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2389784

Residents of Dadieso near Kwahu in the Eastern region have blocked the Accra-Kumasi highway following a tanker accident in the township.

The road block on Saturday was to express their frustration over a gas tanker which has been abandoned at the accident scene.

The town folks blocked the highway using wooden materials and tree branches, resulting in huge vehicular traffic on the stretch.

However, a convoy decided to force its way through, but the youth resisted, causing security men attached to the convoy to fired warning shots which brought about the controversy.

Fearing a potential explosion, some residents have fled the town to places of safety.

Meanwhile, the Ghana National Fire Service has been dispatched to the site to safely move the gas tank and prevent any potential disaster.

The duo, Dr John Kofi Delali Halm and Gloria Owusu speaking on the constituency watch on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Friday, claim to have a better record.

The NDC’s Dr Halm listed the Pokuase Interchange, which he stated the erstwhile Mahama administration negotiated the project and secured funding.

He also mentioned Radio Mashie which he said was set up while he [Dr Halm] was a board member of the Ga West Municipal Assembly, the Mayera Health Centre among other social interventions.

Personally, Dr Halm said he has a clinic at Amasaman stadium road where constituents benefit from frequent health screening and education.

However, Madam Owusu stressed the achievements of the NPP government and its vision for Ghanaians outshine that of the NDC.

The NPP candidate said the party’s record shows they have an upper hand over the NDC and that will manifest on December 7.

In this regard, she said Trobu was targeting 100,000 votes for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and will also increase the NPP’s vote from 60,000 to 90,000.

Ntrobuman SHS begs for replacement of outmoded library books with new ones https://www.adomonline.com/ntrobuman-shs-begs-for-replacement-of-outmoded-library-books-with-new-ones/ Mon, 18 Mar 2024 08:47:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2369836 Students at Ntruboman Senior High School in the Oti Region have called for the replacement of its outdated library books with new ones to better serve its students.

The current library, which has been in use for decades, is no longer meeting the needs of students in the digital age.

A visit to the school by Adom News’ Obrempongba Owusu revealed that, the outdated books in the library cover a range of subjects, from history to science to literature. Many of these books published decades ago do not reflect the current state of knowledge in their respective fields.

The students have expressed frustration with the limited resources and outdated books available in the library.

According to the students, with the rise of online research and e-books, they are finding it difficult to access the information they need for their studies.

Speaking in an interview, the students argued that, modern library books would not only provide them with better access to resources but also create a more conducive environment for studying and collaboration.

The Assistant headmaster of administration, Michael Kwame Mottey, said the school has been advocating for the replacement of the old books for quite some time.

He believes that having a collection of up-to-date and engaging books is crucial for the academic success of the students.

In response to these concerns, the African Library Project has taken the initiative to replace the outmoded library books in the school.

For the past eighteen (18) months, African Library Projects in partnership with Adom News has created over twenty libraries for schools in Oti Region following numerous reports on educational challenges facing schools.

The Regional Country Director, Festus Okpora, disclosed that the organisation aims to equip and provide students with up-to-date and relevant resources that will enhance their learning experience.

He said the projects include sourcing new books on a variety of subjects, as well as incorporating digital resources to keep pace with the rapidly changing educational landscape.

The health walk, which kicked off at 6 am, garnered substantial attention due to its mission of encouraging a healthier lifestyle and drew a crowd of enthusiastic participants.

Notable personalities, including Moses Anim, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Trobu constituency, and representatives from the Ga North Municipal Assembly, added to the event’s prestige.

Of particular significance was the commemoration of the event’s 10th edition, marking a milestone achievement since its inception on December 10, 2014.

Over the years, the “Walk for Life” has steadily gained popularity, attracting individuals from diverse backgrounds who are united in their pursuit of improved health.

Nana Kobo, the visionary behind this initiative, shared his personal philosophy during an interview with Accra-based UTV ahead of the event.

He emphasized the importance of making a positive impact on others, noting that even small gestures can contribute to the well-being of the community.

The designated walking route provided participants with both health benefits and a sense of unity. The journey commenced at the Mile 7 Astro Turf, winding through the old Peace FM building, extending to the Ofankor Overhead, and concluding at the starting point.

This well-planned route ensured that participants could experience the joy of physical activity while fostering a sense of camaraderie within the community.

Nana Kobo acknowledged the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to the suspension of the health walk for the past two years.

However, this year’s event stood as a symbol of resilience and hope, signifying a triumphant return to the path of wellness and unity.

As participants took their steps towards improved health, they were united by a shared purpose: to prioritize their well-being and embrace a healthier lifestyle.

The “Walk for Life” event once again demonstrated that small efforts can collectively create a significant impact, fostering a sense of community, vitality, and inspiration.

According to him, his victory in the election set for May 13, 2023, will further increase the NDC’s chances of snatching the seat from the incumbent, Moses Anim of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mr Olympio who is contesting the primaries with three other persons said this on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Thursday.

The aspirant, among other things, noted that, the incumbent MP has lost touch with the constituents as they cannot boast of any development in his tenure.

Mr Anim retained his seat for a second term after he gained 63,580 votes, representing 61.8 per cent out of the 102,280 total valid votes cast in the 2020 election.

His contender, Emmanuel Yaw Agbesi Gbedemah of the NDC had 35,182.

This leaves a margin of over 28,000 votes which the NDC needs to garner to be able to take over the seat.

But Olympio said he is the magic wand NDC needs to win the seat in the 2024 general elections.

If NDC delegates fail to vote for him, Olympio said he will support any candidate they elect with resources at his disposal to ensure the victory of the NDC.

However, he said it will be his greatest desire to be the NDC’s parliamentary candidate in the general election.

Moments after cementing his political ambition, Mr Olympio urged the youth of the country, especially those residing in his constituency, to come together in unity and rally behind him.

“I feel this is the time the people of Ghana most especially the youth rally behind the youth in politics. And to be honest it hasn’t been an easy journey and I need every support to serve the nation in truth and development.”

We’re collaborating with the Ghana Standards Authority, Food and Drugs Authority, University of Ghana, and other stakeholders who are into post-harvest handling of fish to ensure hygienic preservation and processing of fish products for consumption.

Stop begging for Sinohydro funds – Jinapor to Bawumia https://www.adomonline.com/stop-begging-for-sinohydro-funds-jinapor-to-bawumia/ Tue, 29 Mar 2022 12:43:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2097229 Ranking Member on Parliament’s Mines and Energy Committee, John Jinapor, has ruled out the possibility of the Chinese government releasing funds anytime soon under the Sinohydro project.

He said the Ghanaian government has not been able to mine the bauxite meant to give effect to the barter arrangement.

“The Chinese will not release the funds because of your [Dr Bawumia’s] begging; they’d only release it when you put in place the necessary financial measures, which would guarantee that when the monies are released, Ghana would pay that money,” he said.

Speaking to the newly-appointed Chinese Ambassador, Lu Kun, at the sod-cutting for the construction of a 100km inner-city road at Kumasi, Dr Bawumia called on the Chinese government to assist with government’s project to dualise the Adentan-Dodowa road in Accra.

“You know that there is one project about which I have been calling you [the Chinese Ambassador] virtually every day. That is in Greater Accra because the people of Greater Accra have been disturbing me about it, which is the Adentan-Dodowa dualisation.”

“I am hoping that with your help, we will get that project started for the people between Adentan and Dodowa,” he said.

But the Yapei Kusawgu MP claims government has not lived up to its part of the bargain to warrant the release of the funds.

“My checks today indicate that not even up to 15% of that facility has been released. So, we’d have to get our own Vice President to literally beg the Chinese Ambassador that they should release the funds.

“Don’t forget; when you sign this agreement, there’s what we call a commitment fee. The truth is that we haven’t met their specifications and requirements; until we meet their requirements, they won’t release the money,” he added.

The Adentan-Dodowa road is one of 10 lots approved under the Chinese-sponsored arrangement, the $2 Sinohydro billion deal, which was scheduled to begin in 2019.

Three years down the line, the road remains undone, in a complete state of disrepair, with traffic congestion worsening by the day.

In a report by JoyNews’ Evans Mensah last year, emotional road users narrated their harrowing experience of having to sit in traffic for hours commuting to work, school or the market.

In 2021 government justified the non-completion of some infrastructure projects under the Sinohydro deal with China.

According to government, the phased plan along which the projects are supposed to commence is the reason for the seeming slowdown in activity as far as the project is concerned.

The Office of the Vice President says so far, “they have done over $100 million worth of work from 2019.”

In May 2018, the government signed a Master Project Support Agreement with Sinohydro to construct key infrastructure in exchange for Ghana’s refined bauxite proceeds.

Lots in Sinohydro deal

Lot 1 – Construction of Accra Inner City Roads. A total of 84 kilometres of roads located in Trobu, Anyaa-Sowutoum, Dome-Kwabenya, Adenta and Teshie will be constructed;

Lot 2 – Construction of Kumasi and Mampong Inner City Roads. A total of 100 kilometres of inner-city roads will be constructed in Kumasi and Mampong. In Kumasi, the affected road networks are in Manhyia, Suame, Tafo Pankrono, Asokwa, Kwadaso, Oforikrom, Subin, Nhyiaeso and Bantama;

Lot 3 – Construction of the Tamale Interchange;

Lot 4 – Construction of the PTC Roundabout Interchange in Sekondi-Takoradi, the first interchange in the western part of our country;

Lot 5 – Dualisation of the Adentan-Dodowa Road. 14 kilometres of the Adenta-Dodowa Road will be dualised to reduce congestion, improve road safety, and reduce travel times on the corridor;

All you need to know about the $2bn Sinohydro deal https://www.adomonline.com/all-you-need-to-know-about-the-2bn-sinohydro-deal/ Mon, 27 Sep 2021 13:38:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2020499 In its quest to fix the severe infrastructure deficit in the country, the government entered into a $2 billion Master Project Support Agreement (MPSA) with the Chinese state-run, Sinohydro Corporation Limited in September 2018.

Under the deal, Sinohydro, a hydropower engineering and construction firm, will finance and execute the construction of infrastructural projects across the length and breadth of Ghana in exchange to have access to sites to mine bauxite.

The Atiwa forest was subsequently earmarked as the site to be exploited by the Chinese company for 15 years.

Located in the country’s southeastern part, Atiwa forest is a 26,000 hectares area rich in bauxite and other mineral resource deposits like manganese and iron.

According to the US geological department, the Atiwa forest holds more than 960 million metric tonnes of bauxite reserves valued at more than $500 billion.

It is against this background of sealed wealth that government was able to secure what it touted as an unprecedented barter arrangement to fix Ghana’s infrastructural needs.

Seeking the permission of Parliament in July 2018, the Akufo-Addo administration argued that all the 16 regions will experience remarkable infrastructural growth from the Sinohydro arrangement.

The projects include hospitals, an extension of electricity to rural communities, construction of court and residential buildings for the Judicial Service, landfill sites and industrial parks.

Broken down into phases, the first phase of the project costs $646.6 million, and it begins with the Tamale Interchange project.

Parliament approved projects from lot one to 10 under the first phase.

Lot 1 – Construction of Accra Inner City Roads. A total of 84 kilometres of roads located in Trobu, Anyaa-Sowutoum, Dome-Kwabenya, Adenta and Teshie will be constructed;

Lot 2 – Construction of Kumasi and Mampong Inner City Roads. A total of 100 kilometres of inner-city roads will be constructed in Kumasi and Mampong. In Kumasi, the affected road networks are in Manhyia, Suame, Tafo Pankrono, Asokwa, Kwadaso, Oforikrom, Subin, Nhyiaeso and Bantama;

Lot 3 – Construction of the Tamale Interchange;

Lot 4 – Construction of the PTC Roundabout Interchange, in Sekondi-Takoradi, the first interchange in the western part of our country;

Lot 5 – Dualisation of the Adenta-Dodowa Road. 14 kilometres of the Adenta-Dodowa Road will be dualised so as to reduce congestion, improve road safety, and reduce travel times on the corridor;

Lot 6 – Construction of Sunyani Inner City and Berekum Township Roads. A total of 39 kilometres of roads will be constructed in Sunyani and Berekum Township. In Sunyani, 29 kilometres of inner-city roads will be constructed, whilst Berekum Township will see 10 kilometres of its roads constructed;

Lot 7 – Construction of Prestea Township and Cape Coast Inner City Roads. A total of 32 kilometres of roads will be constructed in Cape Coast and Prestea. In Cape Coast, 22 kilometres of inner-city roads will be constructed, whilst Prestea Township will see 10 kilometres of roads constructed;

Lot 8 – Upgrading of Selected Feeder Roads in Ashanti and Western Regions. Sixty-eight kilometres of feeder roads in the Ashanti and Western North regions will be rehabilitated. The roads that will be rehabilitated are mainly in communities that have bauxite deposits;

Lot 9 – Rehabilitation of Akim Oda-Ofoase Road. This lot involves the rehabilitation of the 38 kilometre Akim Oda-Ofoase road, which is part of the trunk road network, IR3, and passes through several rural communities that connect Akim Oda to Ofoase;

RELATED:

Lot 10 – Construction of the Hohoe-Jasikan-Dodo Pepesu Road of the Eastern Corridor. This will involve the construction of the 66-kilometre section of the Eastern Corridor Road between Hohoe to Jasikan and Dodo Pepesu.

The second phase of the project was expected to come on stream after approval by Parliament.

However, Sinohydro deal has faced criticism by civil society organisations on the grounds that it will be mined beneath the forest posing environmental concerns.

Also, the Minority in Parliament expressed concern that the $2 billion deal between Ghana and Sinohydro will only add up to the debt stock of the country, thereby, burdening the already burdened taxpayer.

Meanwhile, in a yet to be aired documentary titled “Where is the $2 billion Sinohydro deal?” JoyNews learned that government has only managed to access $100 million for the first phase of the project.

Evans Mensah, therefore, went all out to find the answer to the question, “So what happened to the Synohydro money and the projects it was to fund?”

Mr. Kofi Amankwah Omane, Convener for the Group described the MP as a workaholic and a “Father for all” who discharged his duties devoid of ethnic, religious, or political sentiments.

“Being a third-timer in Parliament, Mr. Moses Anim has succeeded in increasing the NPP’s votes in the Constituency thereby making it a safe seat for the Party,” he told the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Accra.

The Convener said by giving the MP a ministerial appointment, the President would affirm his acknowledgment of the massive support he had received from the Constituency.

“Going into the 2020 General Elections, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo promised to reward those who would be able to amass more votes for him. We have been instrumental and supportive throughout his campaigns. It is his turn to also say ‘thank you’ to us by appointing our MP as a Minister,” Mr. Omane stated.

This comes after Ghana’s 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Following the elections, the current parliament is expected to be dissolved for a new parliament to be sworn in.

This is going to be the country’s eight parliament. It is also likely to be a hung parliament since no party was able to obtain an absolute majority in the parliamentary race.

First Lady begins massive campaign for Akufo-Addo https://www.adomonline.com/first-lady-begins-massive-campaign-for-akufo-addo/ Sun, 25 Oct 2020 16:21:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1872646 First Lady of the Republic, H.E. Mrs Rebecca Naa Okaikor Akufo-Addo, has urged the electorate at Trobu to vote massively for President Nana Akufo-Addo for one more term to complete the good works he has started with his ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ agenda.

Mrs Akufo-Addo made the call when she toured the Trobu constituency in the Greater Accra Region.

Accompanied by the Municipal Chief Executive of Ga North, Gertrude Ankrah, Member of Parliament (MP) for Trobu, Moses Anim, and NPP executives, the First Lady visited the Muus Timber Market at Ofankor, the Ofankor Market and the Pokuase Market and attended a durbar held in her honour at the Ofankor MA School Park.

At a meeting with leaders and executives of the Muus Timber Market, Mrs Akufo-Addo thanked the traders for their massive endorsement of then candidate Akufo-Addo in the December 2016 elections and appealed to them to vote massively for him in the up-coming December 7th elections.

Chairman of Muus Timber Market, Kofi Asante, on behalf of the Timber Merchants expressed their elation at the First Lady’s visit and requested her to extend their gratitude to H.E. the President for his assistance following the fire disaster that occurred at the market in December 2015 as well as the regular de-silting of drains which has significantly ebbed flooding in the area.

He, however, complained about the consistent disturbance and harassment meted out by officials of the Forestry Commission at the various barriers when hauling wood to the Muus and appealed to the government to intervene.

Mrs Akufo-Addo assured the traders their concerns would be referred to the relevant authorities. Additionally, the First Lady reminded them of the construction of a major storm drain to bring an end to the flooding as well as the resumption of works on the construction of the Sawmill road by Resource Access Construction Ltd stating.

“This government can be trusted to keep its promises,“ she said.

The First Lady’s next stop was the Pokuase Market where she met and interacted with the traders.

She appealed to them to look to the many promises the Akufo-Addo government has fulfilled and vote massively for another four year term for the party in the December 7th elections.

On behalf of the traders, the Pokuase Market Queen, Naa Ayikai Otoo thanked the First Lady for her visit and assured her of massive votes for President Akufo-Addo and the NPP, stating that the many social intervention policies implemented by the Akufo-Addo led government such as the Free SHS, 1 District 1 Factory (1D1F) and NABCO policies have significantly mitigated their economic challenges and created employment for their spouses and children.

They, however, appealed to the First Lady to facilitate their receipt of assistance from the Covid-19 Stimulus package and MASLOC.

Mrs Akufo-Addo promised to give their concerns her urgent attention and expressed her satisfaction at the government’s plan to construct a new market complex for the traders, by Hanisa Construction Ltd. which she said will commence very soon.

The First Lady also visited the Ofankor Market to interact with the traders and appealed to them to vote for President Akufo-Addo and the NPP in the general election of December 7th.

She again noted with satisfaction, the award of a contract to Well Land Construction Limited for the expansion of the road in front of the Ofankor market.

Mrs Akufo-Addo also joined the NPP MP for Trobu to inspect the on-going construction works of a three storey facility at the Amamorley Health Centre being under taken by Mr Anim with his share of the MPs’ Common Fund and made some donation of detergents and other hospital consumables to the facility.

At a grand durbar held in her honour at the Ofankor MA School Park, the First Lady thanked the traditional leaders of Trobu for supporting the administration of President Akufo-Addo in diverse ways, in his service to the country.

She said though the Akufo-Addo led administration has achieved so much in less than four years it was imperative to vote to retain them in office in order not to erode the gains attained so far, but rather consolidate them and assured them of significant enhancement in their social status when they give the Akufo-Addo led government, one more term to do more.

NPP MP for Trobu, Mr Anim, on behalf of his constituents, thanked the First Lady for honouring them with her visit.

He said the NPP government has undertaken several development projects in the constituency in the area of road construction and asphalting, construction of schools, modern toilet facilities and installation of street lights among others, and assured his constituents of the NPP’s readiness to continue with their good works to bring economic and social development to the people.

Mr Anim called on his constituents to look out for the first position on the ballot paper which will be occupied by President Akufo-Addo and the NPP’s parliamentary candidate and vote for them accordingly.

John Mahama: The face of real development https://www.adomonline.com/john-mahama-the-face-of-real-development/ Fri, 11 Sep 2020 11:40:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1852821 In recent times, various people have expressed concern about the retrogressive nature of our country’s development amidst the abundant resources available to the managers of the economy.

We have seen in the past how quickly self-acclaimed economists jumped on the hill as a paragon of economic knowledge to criticise others of being incompetent in the management of the country’s development.

In principle, these paragons have clearly shown that, they lack the basic rudiments and understanding of actually what comprises development now that they have the mandate of the people.

For almost four years they have been amazing in siphoning the potentials of the people and have soaked themselves in corrupt activities to enrich themselves, their friends and family members to the detriment of the poor citizen.

What we do know is that, good leaders use the potentials of a country to benefit the citizens so that, the people can be content and happy in terms of their progress and material well- being.

This is what defines the leader, John Mahama. The leader who, in my opinion, laid a crucial foundation towards the development of our country Ghana since Nkrumah’s administration.

The presence of physical infrastructure, including good roads across the country, bridges, hospitals, railway lines, schools, communication systems, building of dams for irrigation systems in his first term constitute physical development he envisioned for this take – off.

It is evident also that, despite the numerous strides he made in infrastructure development, John Mahama has shown leadership in the establishment of manufacturing industries, reliable transport, and communication systems which jointly facilitated rapid socio – economic well – being of the people.

With the launching of the NDC’s manifesto, it is clear the agenda of development spearheaded by a new NDC government is going to take care of our basic needs including the provision of clean water, education and educational facilities, shelter and healthcare delivery services, which are all crucial to a ‘man’s life’.

John Mahama’s government will be responsible for making them available to the people, irrespective of their political leanings.

We as Ghanaians have an opportunity to escape from poverty and oppression so that we can gain control over our destiny. This is real development.

Infact a John Mahama government will mark the continuation of the provision of our basic social services and amenities, which are evenly distributed to cater for the greater majority of the nation’s population and enhance their quality of life.

To simply put it, there will be affordable houses for all, higher income for workers and new workers(*OKADA), good educational facilities and opportunities for all, sufficient quality food for all, a cleaner environment, equality of opportunities to employment and promotion of greater individual freedoms and above all a richer cultural life.

It is also abundantly clear that, John Mahama’s government will not only concern themselves with increasing national income but also will take steps to narrow the widening economic and social conditions that exist between the centre and the periphery.

Again John Mahama’s government will endeavor to assist rural communities to make proper use of the resources rather than draining such resources to create good living conditions for a few family members at the centre.

And completely unlike the frivolous attempts made by the current administration at promoting rapid socio – economic development through various development programmes but where the life of the ordinary people continue to deteriorate.

This unfortunate situation results from the fact that development programmes over the years appear abstract to those whose life they are expected to influence positively.

Arising out of these unfortunate circumstances, I am, and like many others, are happy for the NDC and John Mahama for leading the way, particularly in the area of promoting the quality of human life, which has shifted from the traditional ” top – down approach to a focus on ” our developmental needs.

By so doing, they have first provided opportunities and consulted and involved us – the people for whom specific projects and programmes are meant for.

When opportunities are created to allow people to participate in the process of development, the people become happy, because the resources belong to them.

They will own and share in the fruits of the labour. That is the only way development can become sustainable for future generations.

The reason many opportunities like OKADA legalization and regulations are coming up to create thousands of jobs in the economy.

The December 7th election is about our future. Our future determined on the path of our development – physical, economic, social, cultural and technological.

It is for this reason we must vote for a leader who understands our future development and not a mere rhetorician who has been singing without finding fit on the job.

It is a communal duty to vote massively for the nation builder; the JohnandJane ticket to prevent the mortgaging of our future destiny.

NPP primaries: NEC clears disqualified aspirants https://www.adomonline.com/npp-primaries-nec-clears-disqualified-aspirants/ Fri, 05 Jun 2020 13:23:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1806275 The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has given the green light to some disqualified aspirants to contest its parliamentary primaries slated for June 20, 2020.

Most of the candidates in Greater Accra, Western North and Ashanti regions seeking to contest their incumbent Members of Parliament were disqualified by the regional vetting committees.

But NEC, after listening to their appeals, declared them eligible to contest in the elections.

However, some of the decisions taken by the vetting committees were also upheld.

Below is the full list:

  1. Greater Accra Region

NEC upheld the recommendations of the Vetting Committee in respect of all the aspiring candidates. The decision by the appeals committee to clear the opponent of Moses Anim in Trobu, Edward Addo, who was initially disqualified by the vetting committee was thus reversed

  1. Western North

NEC reversed the decision of the Appeals Committee to disqualify former BOST CEO, Alfred Obeng in the Bibiani Constituency. He has therefore been reinstated as per the verdict of the vetting committee that initially cleared him

  1. Western Region

Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey pulls out of Anyaa-Sowutuom race https://www.adomonline.com/shirley-ayorkor-botchwey-pulls-out-of-anyaa-sowutuom-race/ Mon, 24 Feb 2020 21:36:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1756912 A total of 57 parliamentary aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) filed their nomination papers at the close of nominations on Thursday, February 20, to contest in 20 constituencies of the Greater Accra Region.

Surprisingly, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Anyaa- Sowutuom constituency, Mrs Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, also the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, will not seek re-election at the Party’s primaries on April 25.

Mr Daniel Parker Odartai France, the Regional Secretary of the NPP, who announced it in a statement signed and issued in Accra, said there are 13 females and 44 males in the race to contest on the ticket of the party in the Region.

The 57 contestants will face off at the Party’s primaries on April 25, which will be held simultaneously nationwide to win a slot to contest on the December 7 polls.

The incumbent members of Parliament going unopposed in their respective constituencies are Patrick Yaw Boamah of Okaikwei Central, Henry Quartey of Ayawaso Central and Alhaji Abu-Bakar Saddique of Madina.

Adentan, Anyaa-Sowutuom, and Bortianor-Ngleshie-Amanfrom constituencies have the highest number of contestants with five each followed by Ablekuma North and Tema Central with four contestants each respectively.

Constituencies with three contestants include Tema West, Tema East, Krowor, Ledzokuku, La Dadekotopon, Trobu, Okaikwei South and Weija Gbawe.

Ablekuma Central, Ablekuma West, Okaikwei North, Dome Kwabenya and Tema East had two contestants each.

For instance, in Bortianor-Ngleshie-Amanfrom Constituency, the incumbent MP Alhaji Habib Saad is slugging it out with four other aspirants, including Sylvester Matthew Tetteh, George Addo Osei Waree and Gifty Mensah.

At Anyaa-Sowutuom Constituency, Dr Emmanuel Lamptey, Emmanuel Tobin, Edna Sackey, Dr Adomako Kissi and Nana Ama Asafo Boakye will face off in a tough contest following the voluntary withdrawal from the race of the incumbent MP.

Yaw Buaben Asamoa, the NPP Director of Communications and incumbent MP for Adentan Constituency will not have the slot on a silver platter, as he comes against four other opponents, including Emmanuel Kwesi Mantey, Freda Agyemang Sarpong, Adam Abdul Razak and Rahman Zak in an expected grueling contest in Adentan.

It will be a nail biting contest at Dome Kwabenya as Adwoa Safo, the incumbent MP, who doubles as the Deputy Majority Leader and Minister of State for Public Procurement at the Presidency battle it out with the son of the Speaker of Parliament, Dr Mike Oquaye Junior, who is the Ghana’s Ambassador to India.

Mr Vincent Sowah Odotei, the incumbent MP for La Dadekotopon and a Deputy Minister of Communications, will come face-to-face with Joseph Gerald Nii Tetteh Nyanyofio and Comfort Adei Kotey in an anticipated tough contest.

Madam Tina Naa Ayele Mensah, the reigning MP for Weija-Gbawe and a Deputy Minister of Health, will have aches against two of her male opponents, as Frederick Quainoo and Patrick Ampong Baidoo have laced their boot to wrest the ticket for Weija-Gbawe at the Party’s primaries.

Delegates at the Ablekuma West Constituency are anticipating a crunch contest as Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the incumbent MP and the Minister of Communications will go toe-toe against Kan Dapaah Junior, the son of the Minister of National Security.

Okaikwei North will have a fascinating contest as Fuseini Issah, the incumbent MP face off with Ken Kuranchie, the Managing Editor of the Daily Satellite (newspaper) slug it out for the sole ticket to represent his constituents in Parliament, while Ahmed Arthur, the current MP for Okaikwei South battle it out with Darkoa Newman and Nana Fredua Agyemang Ofori Atta.

Madam Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and the incumbent MP for Krowor will not have it easy against two of his opponents-Emmanuel Odai and Eric Nii Ayikoi Okine.

Mr Carlos Ahenhora, the incumbent MP and a Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, will face off with Kwesi Poku and Keku Armquasi-Armuzuah at Tema West while Daniel Nii Kwartei-Titus-Glover, a Deputy Minister of Transport, face off with Mr Benjamin Armah Ashitey, as the only hurdle to climb towards clinching the sole ticket for the primary contest

Dumelo, Sosu recommend energising NDC grassroots for 2020 victory https://www.adomonline.com/dumelo-sosu-recommend-energising-ndc-grassroots-for-2020-victory/ Wed, 14 Aug 2019 06:10:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1692896 Parliamentary aspirants, John Dumelo and Francis-Xavier Sosu, have said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will have to involve grassroots of the party if the campaign for victory in 2020 would be successful.

John Dumelo is gunning for victory for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency during the NDC primaries on August 24. If he is successful, he will face incumbent Lydia Alhassan of the governing New Patriotic Party in the 2020 general elections.

Renowned Human Rights activist, Francis-Xavier Sosu, is also hoping to wrestle power from the incumbent NPP Parliamentarian in 2020 if he wins in next Saturday’s primaries. He lost to Amadu Sorogo in the NDC primaries in 2015 for the Madina Constituency.

Although the NDC lost by a wide margin to the NPP during the 2016 general polls, the two NDC aspirants believe their party’s mistake to was to downplay the role of the grassroots in the lead up to the elections.

Speaking on PM Express on Tuesday evening, John Dumelo said, “in 2016 we didn’t really involve everybody, the grassroots, especially the branches. Everything was done without the branches forgetting that the branches are the ones that actually hold the party together.”

He said should he win the mandate of the NDC delegates on August 24, he will involve everybody in the party, following the party structures for victory in 2020.

“From the top to the bottom everybody is getting involved,” he stressed.

Mr Sosu also said there is the need for the party to invigorate the base of the party, citing voter apathy as the main cause of the NDC’s loss in 2020.

ALSO: Govt committed to entrepreneurial support in Ghana – Mohammed Awal

“For example when it comes to Madina, the voter turnout in Madina was so abysmal in 2016. If you look at 2012, voter turnout was above 80% but in 2016, voter turnout was about 20%. Clearly, people did not turn up to vote. There was a level of apathy in the system,” he told show host, Evans Mensah.

He said the loss of the Madina constituency to the NPP may be due to the fact that the NDC candidate had been there for a long time.

“So I believe that with a new candidate on the block, it will be easier to work again with the wards, the branches to reenergize the base of the party and I represent that,” he added.

Meanwhile, the parliamentary primaries in the Greater Accra, where the seats of the two aspirants are located, has one of the highest entries.

At least 118 aspirants have picked nomination forms to contest at the various constituencies.

The aspirants comprise 20 women and 98 men. They will be seeking the approval of the electorate in the 34 constituencies of the region to represent the party in the 2020 parliamentary election.

With the exception of the Ablekuma North Constituency where Ms Winifred Ashley is running unopposed, the rest of the constituencies are expected to be keenly contested.

ALSO: Akufo-Addo ‘mocks’ NDC plan to scrap free SHS after 2020 comeback

The Bortianor/Ngleshie/Amanfro Constituency recorded the highest number of aspirants with nine people contesting, followed by the Amasaman Constituency which had six people competing for the spot.

It will be a battle of nerves at the Odododiodoo, Sege, Trobu, Krowor, Ayawaso West Wuogon and Ayawaso North constituencies as each of the constituencies had only two aspirants expressing interest.

The rest of the constituencies recorded between three and five aspirants.

Incumbent MPs

Many incumbent Members of Parliament (MPs), including the MP for Ningo-Prampram, Mr Samuel Nartey George; MP for Ablekuma South, Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije; MP for Odododiodoo, Nii Lante Vanderpuije, and Ashaiman MP, Mr Ernest Norgbey, are all seeking to get the nod again to represent the NDC in the 2020 parliamentary election.

The incumbent MP for Shai Osudoku, Ms Linda Ocloo, is also seeking to get the endorsement of the electorate but will face another challenge from a former Executive Director of the National Service Scheme, Dr Michael Kpessah Whyte.

The two clashed in a by-election to choose a parliamentary candidate in June 2016 following the demise of Desmond William Ocloo, the husband of Linda Ocloo, shortly after he was elected.

At Ningo Prampram, the Constituency Chairman of the party, Mr Michael Kwetey Tetteh, has expressed interest to contest the seat for the second time after failing to beat competition from Sam George, who clinched the spot after beating E.T. Mensah in the 2015 parliamentary primaries of the NDC.

The nominees including former Executive Director of National Service Secretariat, Dr. Michael Kpessah Whyte and actor John Dumelo.

Many incumbent MPs including the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George; Alfred Okoe Vanderpuje, MP for Ablekuma South; MP for Odododiodoo, Nii Lante Vanderpuije, and Ashaiman MP, Ernest Norgbey are also seeking to get the nod of the party to contest for the parliamentary seat in the 2020 general elections on the ticket of the NDC.

ALSO: Robbers attack commercial bus on Tarkwa-Takoradi Highway

Of the 34 constituencies in the region, only the Ablekuma North seat will be contested unopposed by Winifred Ashley.

At Shai Osu Doku where Dr. Kpessah Whyte is putting himself up for elections at the party level, the incumbent MP, Linda Ocloo is also seeking to get the endorsement of the party again.

Linda Ocloo, beat competition from Dr. Kpessah Whyte in June 2016 in a by-election to choose a parliamentary candidate when her husband, Desmond William Ocloo, died in a tragic accident at Juaso in the Ashanti Region in March 2016 shortly after he was elected.

She went ahead to win the parliamentary polls in the December 2016 general elections.

ALSO: Teenager killed in motor crash

The Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary primaries will see actor John Dumelo compete with Suzzy Afua Adoboe for the seat.

Dumelo had earlier come forward to contest the NDC primaries for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency when that seat became vacant following the death of the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP, Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko in November 2018. He, however, withdrew before the main contest.

A pharmacist, Delali Brempong won the primaries at the party level but lost to the widow of the late MP, Lydia Alhassan who contested on the ticket of the NPP in the controversial polls.

Mr. Brempong, who is not a first-timer at the primaries seem to have given up on attempting to become MP for the constituency as he failed to pick nominations by the Friday July 12 deadline.
