How Dumelo was almost stabbed on set – Leila Djansi recounts https://www.adomonline.com/how-dumelo-was-almost-stabbed-on-set-leila-djansi-recounts/ Sun, 09 Mar 2025 09:07:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2512719 Filmmaker Leila Djansi has disclosed that a major blunder on a Ghanaian movie set nearly resulted in actor John Dumelo being stabbed with a real knife during a scene.

According to her, the incident occurred when a production designer mistakenly handed a real knife to actress Vanessa Williams for a stabbing scene, a situation that could have turned tragic if not for what she described as divine intervention.

Djansi used this near-fatal error to highlight what she sees as deep-seated inefficiencies in Ghana’s film industry.

She lamented the lack of professionalism, recalling instances where crew members abandoned filming to watch football, an assistant director took a nap in the middle of a shoot, and actors were denied proper wardrobe because their roles were deemed insignificant.

Drawing comparisons, she noted how meticulous film productions in other countries, such as the Dominican Republic, prioritize details, citing an experience where a props team provided her with eight different watches to select from for a single scene.

Her critique extended to the industry’s lack of growth, pointing out that despite Ghana’s talent and storytelling potential, poor execution continues to hold the sector back.

She referenced Ghana’s 2018 Oscar submission, Azali, as a rare bright spot, arguing that subsequent entries have failed to meet international standards.

Leila Djansi urged industry players to embrace constructive criticism instead of reacting defensively.

She educated that real progress can only come from acknowledging flaws and actively working to fix them.

OSP involving Dumelo to equalise and avoid arrest – Aide https://www.adomonline.com/osp-involving-dumelo-to-equalise-and-avoid-arrest-aide/ Wed, 04 Dec 2024 23:14:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2479377 Benyamin Avornyotse, the spokesperson and aide for NDC parliamentary candidate John Dumelo, has criticised the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for including Dumelo in its investigation into alleged electoral misconduct during Ayawaso West Wuogon’s special voting.

The OSP’s probe reportedly includes both Mr Dumelo and the incumbent Member of Parliament, Lydia Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for alleged infractions during the special voting exercise held on Monday, December 2.

Mr Dumelo is specifically being investigated for interacting with voters in the queue, an action the OSP says breaches electoral laws.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story, on Wednesday, December 4, Mr Avornyotse dismissed the OSP’s focus on Dumelo.

He argued that the real issue lies with Lydia Alhassan, who was allegedly seen handing out items to voters, including security officers.

“What did we all see in the video? It was the MP handing out items to voters. That is the matter in contention. This attempt to rope us into this issue will not fly,” he said.

He claimed that Mr Dumelo’s inclusion in the investigation appears to be an effort to “equalise” the situation and avoid holding anyone accountable.

“The only reason they are trying to bring in John is to equalise and use it as an excuse why they cannot arrest anybody. Basically, that is what they are doing,” he said.

Nevertheless, he stated Mr Dumelo would cooperate fully if required for investigations.

Mr Avornyotse also called for heightened vigilance by law enforcement and citizens on Election Day to prevent any recurrence of such activities, urging authorities to ensure strict compliance with electoral regulations.

This follows allegations that Ms. Alhassan was seen distributing food to voters in a queue during the Special Voting exercise held on Monday.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, 3rd December, Mr. Dumelo stated that his complaint includes video evidence capturing various actions by Ms. Alhassan, which he claims contravene Ghana’s criminal and electoral laws.

He emphasized the importance of upholding electoral integrity and preventing any form of voter manipulation.

Mr. Dumelo also revealed that his team had provided the OSP with additional material information regarding alleged plans by Ms. Alhassan to unlawfully influence voters on a larger scale.

These concerns are particularly focused on the upcoming general election, scheduled for Saturday, 7th December 2024.

The NDC candidate underscored the significance of ensuring free and fair elections, urging the relevant authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly.

He called on the OSP to take swift action to prevent any further breaches that could undermine the democratic process in the constituency.

“The complaint entails video recordings of various actions by Ms. Lydia Seyram Alhassan, which we believe breach our criminal and electoral laws.”

“My team also provided material information on plots by Ms. Lydia Seyram Alhassan to unlawfully influence voters on a larger scale come Saturday, December 7, 2024, when the main election will be held.”

Mr Dumelo, a first-time parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been left disappointed following his colleague actors’ public support for Lydia Alhassan.

Yesterday, tons of the New Patriotic Party filmmakers stormed the constituency to campaign for Maa Lydia and ‘teased’ Mr Dumelo with photos of their activities.

This, Beverly believes is a betrayal of the highest order, considering the friendship that existed between them and Mr Dumelo prior to his political ambition.

“How will I be able to slur, taint or dishonor a colleague’s name and hard work? How will I forget friendship and family for money and fame?” she quizzed.

Listen: Minister replies John Dumelo over prices of local rice https://www.adomonline.com/listen-minister-replies-john-dumelo-over-prices-of-local-rice/ Thu, 28 Nov 2019 16:15:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1726662

Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, has urged Ghanaians to disregard comments of actor cum politician John Dumelo on the prices of local rice.

Comparing rice brands such as Lele and Emerald to a local rice producing firm Wienco, he said Wienco produced the same quality rice as Lele and Emerald and is even cheaper compared to prices of Lele and Emerald.

“People like John Dumelo should be disregarded for saying that local rice is expensive, because 25 kilos Lele rice is between GH¢ 220 and GH¢ 250, Emerald is GH¢ 218 but 25 kilos of ‘Aduanehene’ rice from Wienco goes for GH¢ 135,” he stated in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Thursday.

Mr Dumelo on his Facebook post argued that imported rice is relatively cheaper.

The actor was of the view that many Ghanaians would opt for local rice if it’s cheaper.

To the Minister, claims that prices of locally produced rice are expensive are an attempt by some people to pollute and misinform the public about the real prices of rice produced locally.

Dumelo pushes for twice a week wearing of ‘Ghana clothes,’ says it will create jobs https://www.adomonline.com/dumelo-pushes-for-twice-a-week-wearing-of-ghana-clothes-says-it-will-create-jobs/ Tue, 22 Oct 2019 07:38:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1714577 Actor and politician, John Dumelo has called for more purchasing of locally made clothes.

This, he believes would create jobs and “instantly boost local production and position Ghana as a fashion and textile hub in the sub-region.”

In a post on Twitter, the NDC parliamentary candidate called for Monday to be added to Friday as a day for wearing locally made attire.

State institutions in Ghana and most private companies have set aside Friday to promote locally made clothes.

Workers are required to wear local textile prints.

But pushing for more, Dumelo wrote “To be honest, the Friday wear is not enough. We should add Monday to it. So twice a week we all should wear made in Ghana clothes.”

Dumelo has engaged in lots of philanthropic work lately, garnering support from the youth, on social media especially.

I spoke the language of the delegates – John Dumelo on victory https://www.adomonline.com/i-spoke-the-language-of-the-delegates-john-dumelo-on-victory/ Tue, 27 Aug 2019 06:15:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1697252 Actor cum Politician, John Dumelo, has disclosed that he won the Ayawaso West Wuogon nominee slot for the NDC by a huge margin because he spoke the language of the delegates.

According to Dumelo, he has always been serious with his quest to contest for the parliamentary seat and he worked very hard towards it.

He told Bernard Avle, the host of Point of View on Citi TV, that he did most of his hardwork during the bye-election which he did not contest.

Dumelo admitted that Ghanaians underestimated his chances of winning to become a parliamentary aspirant.

“Most of the political stuff that I did, I didn’t put on social media because that is not what is important. What is important is the one-on-one dialogue with the delegates which I was doing so that is why people were thinking ‘Ah is John contesting,” he explained.

“When you go to the delegates and you speak their language, they’ll understand you and vote for you,” he added.

John Dumelo noted that he faced strong opposition from within especially, from some unseen hands who thought he was not ready yet to become an aspirant for the NDC.

He believes that his profession as an actor as well as his alignment to certain groups of people, made most of his party folks think he is not the right candidate for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.

“I’m very spiritual and if God speaks, you can’t stop it. I have lived in East Legon for so many years and served the NDC for so many times. At the end of the day it’s the people who are calling me to represent them, so we need a different approach to be able to win the seat for Ayawaso West Wuogon,” he stated.

“Everybody feels that I am the right person to win the seat for the NDC in Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency,” Dumelo stressed.

ALSO: Yieleh Chireh yet to congratulate me – Fmr. IGP secretary

He indicated that he chose Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency because he didn’t need an easy seat like going through his hometown seat to be in parliament.

“I want the hardest and most challenging route to parliament and at the end of the day it is for the good of the party because winning Ayawaso West Wuogon will add more votes to the NDC.”

John Dumelo during last Saturday’s parliamentary primaries of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) won with 758 votes representing 88 per cent to become the NDC rep for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.

As a newcomer, Dumelo beat Suzzy Afua Adoboe who had 99 votes out of the 859 votes cast. There were two rejected ballot papers.

His victory was greeted with rapturous cheers from teeming supporters who had gathered at the La Bawaleshie polling station.

Even before the results were announced, the supporters could be heard chanting “We want John” implying that they wanted John Dumelo to represent them.

V8 scandal will not affect MP bid – Dumelo https://www.adomonline.com/v8-scandal-will-not-affect-mp-bid-dumelo/ Wed, 14 Aug 2019 16:29:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1693332 An actor and aspiring Member of Parliament has told Joy News a state vehicle saga he was embroiled in, will not affect his chances of annexing the Ayawaso West Wougon Parliamentary seat.

John Dumelo told Evans Mensah, host of PM Express, he did nothing wrong.

“I went to the servicing area and they said the car is for the state. I said ‘ok, take it.’ They took it [and] I went back for my money and that was the end of the story. It has never been an issue,” Mr. Dumelo said on Tuesday night.

The actor was in 2017 accused by government’s Assets Recovery Taskforce of refusing to hand over a state vehicle.

Mr. Dumelo, who has stepped up his political flirtation with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), faces stiff competition from Madam Afua Dogboe.

Ahead of the NDC’s Parliamentary Primaries scheduled for August 24, to decide who represents the party at the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, John Dumelo has been speaking about how the party can return to power in 2020.

He says all members of the party must be involved in party activities especially at the grassroots level.

According to him, the party previously failed because it downplayed the role of the grassroots.

“In 2016, we didn’t really involve everybody, the grassroots, especially the branches. Everything was done without the branches forgetting that the branches are the ones that actually hold the party together,” he revealed.

Mr. Dumelo has committed to “involve everybody in the party, from the top to the bottom” should he win the mandate of the NDC in the August 24 primary.

Dumelo, Sosu recommend energising NDC grassroots for 2020 victory https://www.adomonline.com/dumelo-sosu-recommend-energising-ndc-grassroots-for-2020-victory/ Wed, 14 Aug 2019 06:10:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1692896 Parliamentary aspirants, John Dumelo and Francis-Xavier Sosu, have said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will have to involve grassroots of the party if the campaign for victory in 2020 would be successful.

John Dumelo is gunning for victory for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency during the NDC primaries on August 24. If he is successful, he will face incumbent Lydia Alhassan of the governing New Patriotic Party in the 2020 general elections.

Renowned Human Rights activist, Francis-Xavier Sosu, is also hoping to wrestle power from the incumbent NPP Parliamentarian in 2020 if he wins in next Saturday’s primaries. He lost to Amadu Sorogo in the NDC primaries in 2015 for the Madina Constituency.

Although the NDC lost by a wide margin to the NPP during the 2016 general polls, the two NDC aspirants believe their party’s mistake to was to downplay the role of the grassroots in the lead up to the elections.

Speaking on PM Express on Tuesday evening, John Dumelo said, “in 2016 we didn’t really involve everybody, the grassroots, especially the branches. Everything was done without the branches forgetting that the branches are the ones that actually hold the party together.”

He said should he win the mandate of the NDC delegates on August 24, he will involve everybody in the party, following the party structures for victory in 2020.

“From the top to the bottom everybody is getting involved,” he stressed.

Mr Sosu also said there is the need for the party to invigorate the base of the party, citing voter apathy as the main cause of the NDC’s loss in 2020.

ALSO: Govt committed to entrepreneurial support in Ghana – Mohammed Awal

“For example when it comes to Madina, the voter turnout in Madina was so abysmal in 2016. If you look at 2012, voter turnout was above 80% but in 2016, voter turnout was about 20%. Clearly, people did not turn up to vote. There was a level of apathy in the system,” he told show host, Evans Mensah.

He said the loss of the Madina constituency to the NPP may be due to the fact that the NDC candidate had been there for a long time.

“So I believe that with a new candidate on the block, it will be easier to work again with the wards, the branches to reenergize the base of the party and I represent that,” he added.

Meanwhile, the parliamentary primaries in the Greater Accra, where the seats of the two aspirants are located, has one of the highest entries.

At least 118 aspirants have picked nomination forms to contest at the various constituencies.

The aspirants comprise 20 women and 98 men. They will be seeking the approval of the electorate in the 34 constituencies of the region to represent the party in the 2020 parliamentary election.

With the exception of the Ablekuma North Constituency where Ms Winifred Ashley is running unopposed, the rest of the constituencies are expected to be keenly contested.

ALSO: Akufo-Addo ‘mocks’ NDC plan to scrap free SHS after 2020 comeback

The Bortianor/Ngleshie/Amanfro Constituency recorded the highest number of aspirants with nine people contesting, followed by the Amasaman Constituency which had six people competing for the spot.

It will be a battle of nerves at the Odododiodoo, Sege, Trobu, Krowor, Ayawaso West Wuogon and Ayawaso North constituencies as each of the constituencies had only two aspirants expressing interest.

The rest of the constituencies recorded between three and five aspirants.

Incumbent MPs

Many incumbent Members of Parliament (MPs), including the MP for Ningo-Prampram, Mr Samuel Nartey George; MP for Ablekuma South, Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije; MP for Odododiodoo, Nii Lante Vanderpuije, and Ashaiman MP, Mr Ernest Norgbey, are all seeking to get the nod again to represent the NDC in the 2020 parliamentary election.

The incumbent MP for Shai Osudoku, Ms Linda Ocloo, is also seeking to get the endorsement of the electorate but will face another challenge from a former Executive Director of the National Service Scheme, Dr Michael Kpessah Whyte.

The two clashed in a by-election to choose a parliamentary candidate in June 2016 following the demise of Desmond William Ocloo, the husband of Linda Ocloo, shortly after he was elected.

At Ningo Prampram, the Constituency Chairman of the party, Mr Michael Kwetey Tetteh, has expressed interest to contest the seat for the second time after failing to beat competition from Sam George, who clinched the spot after beating E.T. Mensah in the 2015 parliamentary primaries of the NDC.

Show evidence of new factories – John Dumelo charges government https://www.adomonline.com/show-evidence-of-new-factories-john-dumelo-charges-government/ Sat, 20 Jul 2019 14:08:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1686500 Actor John Dumelo is charging the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to release evidence of the five new factories it claims to have constructed.

He says government has only rebranded old factories and commissioning them as new ones which only smacks of deception.

“They should show me five functional factories they have built from 2017 until date, which are employing and benefitting more people across the country,” he charged.

In 2018, Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta who presented the 2019 financial statement to Parliament said by the end of the year (2018), a total of 79 factories in nine regions will be at various stages of construction or operation under the One District One Factory (IDIF) initiative.

The minister said government will assiduously work towards industrialising the country’s economy by implementing one of its major campaign promises of putting up one factory in each of the country’s district.

But Mr John Dumelo who is contesting to represent NDC as the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency MP told Joy News’ Kwesi Parker that none of the promises made by government have been fulfilled.

“They should show us the factories, we would go and verify,” he said.

ALSO: Poster of John Dumelo pleading for support ahead of NDC primary pops up

He said the NPP promising to construct factories in some districts while campaigning for votes in 2020, is not the only failed promise of the Akufo-Addo government.

“Just recently, they released $1million per constituency, which was supposed to be in the first year. If they are now doing something, they promised to do in the first year what does that say? They failed,” he said.

The NPP also promised to construct dams for some districts in the northern part of the country, he said. The actor believes government has not constructed the dams three years into its first term.

John Dumelo stated that the hopes of Ghanaians in government have dissipated over time and they are now tired and disappointed with it.

He said the NDC coming back to power in 2020 is the best thing to happen to the country.

“The change that we wanted for 2016 is not the change we got. The people are calling for John Mahama to come back, NDC is definitely coming” he added.

I want to be bigger than Darko Farms – John Dumelo https://www.adomonline.com/want-bigger-darko-farms-john-dumelo/ Sat, 03 Feb 2018 10:41:20 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=898861 Ghanaian actor John Dumelo has set his sights on establishing an agricultural enterprise that will rival the famous Darko Farms.
Owned by agriculturist Rev Dr Kwabena Darko, Darko Farms was known in the West African sub-region as the “Poultry King”.
However, Dumelo has designs on trumping that feat by making in-roads into crop production and animal husbandry in the near future.
The actor already owns a three-acre cassava farm in the Manya Krobo community in the Eastern Region which he hopes to expand to 10 acres soon.
“Look at the end of the day, when you look at advanced countries, you realize that they believe in themselves and they believe in their products. If you take America for instance you have so many corporations, people who believe in their own products and who manufacture their own products,” Dumelo told Graphic Online at the launch of Benjamin’s Hot Chocolate on Friday in Accra.
“Its about time we believe in Ghana and invest in ourselves. At the end of the day Ghana is for us, I mean if you decide to be CPP and go and live in Burkina Faso that’s the only way (to escape and not care about what happens to Ghana).
“But if you are in Ghana and you support whichever political party, at the end of the day, Ghana is for us. If you wish bad for a certain political party to fail, when you come into power you will realize that you have a lot more work to do
“I think development should just be continuous, that is why I also believe that we should have a developmental plan for Ghana whether it’s 20 years, 40 years… 60 years, so that whichever political party come, Ghana will develop in the right direction.
According to him, his acting career has taken a back seat as he concentrates a lot more of his efforts on farming.
“Now, I am more into farming as well, so I concentrate more of my time on farming… I am into cattle rearing, goat rearing, snail rearing, I am into maize as well. My maize farm is in the north, the rest is in the Eastern region, so we are doing well.”
He also explained that his farming enterprise if it turns out to be successful, will serve as an inspiration for Ghanaian youth to get involved in farming.
“That is the projection, that is my main aim… that I am able to expand and also to encourage the youth to get into agriculture…”.

Jon Benjamin mocks John Dumelo on twitter over stolen V8 https://www.adomonline.com/jon-benjamin-mocks-john-dumelo-twitter-stolen-v8/ https://www.adomonline.com/jon-benjamin-mocks-john-dumelo-twitter-stolen-v8/#comments Tue, 28 Nov 2017 10:48:01 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=712701 Former British High Commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin took to Twitter to troll Ghanaian actor John Dumelo over claims he stole a V8 cross-country vehicle belonging to the state.
Mr Dumelo had earlier tweeted “I woke up at the dead sea, had lunch in Turkey and now landing in London. What a day”.
But Jon Benjamin noted for his religious controversial tweets in response said “In London? If I see I freshly repainted V8 with its own private siren heading down The Embankment, I’ll give you a wave. Enjoy our city”.
The actor, later responded, he will be the one because he is picking the Queen of England up for tea.
“yep…..that’s me. I’m picking the Queen for tea”
It would be recalled that a vehicle belonging to the state was in March this year retrieved from a spraying shop at Abelemkpe, Accra.
It was alleged that the actor had taken to the shop to be re-sprayed but members of the task force insisted it was not his but for the state and subsequently seized it.
When news broke that one of the two V8 Toyota Land Cruisers classified as missing from the pool of state vehicles had been retrieved from John Dumelo at an auto mechanic’s shop, he allegedly took to Facebook, a social media platform, to rubbish the publication, claiming that he bought the vehicle impounded by the state.

I didn’t mean to mock A1 Bread CEO – Dumelo https://www.adomonline.com/didnt-mean-mock-a1-bread-ceo-dumelo/ Wed, 12 Jul 2017 06:06:34 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=286201 Popular Ghanaian actor, John Dumelo has said he was unnecessarily lambasted by Ghanaians over his “What went wrong” comment about a bread seller some months ago.
According to him, the controversial post which angered many and generated a social media storm was not meant to mock the “bread seller”.
In an interview with host of Joy FM’s ‘Cosmopolitan Mix’, Doreen Andoh Tuesday, July 11, 2017, Mr. Dumelo said, he was only shocked to see the graduate hawking bread and, therefore, asked a simple question which anyone in his shoes would have asked.
“I wasn’t there to mock anybody. Why would I mock a bread seller? Three months ago I was supplying my meat to chop bars in Accra. I was personally and physically handling meat so why would I go and laugh at somebody who’s selling bread on the street? I will never do that,” he explained.
John Dumelo who happens to be an entrepreneur himself was severely attacked on social media for posting a picture of a graduate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) captioned “Just saw a Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) grad hawking in traffic…What went wrong?”
The hawker, Godfred Obeng Boateng who turned out to be the CEO of A1 Bread has however, forgiven the actor after the latter deleted the post and openly apologized.

I’ve used the cost of five V8 cars to take care of 55,000 kids – John Dumelo https://www.adomonline.com/ive-used-cost-five-v8-cars-take-care-55000-kids-john-dumelo/ Tue, 27 Jun 2017 05:59:00 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=249151 Actor John Dumelo hardly replies comments, which are rude but he decided to put this young guy called Umar IDN Khattab in his right place.

Mr. Dumelo on Monday afternoon posted a picture he captured with some kids in the Volta Region with the caption “the future…”.

In the picture, the renowned Ghanaian actor is seen showing something to the children on his MacBook.

Right after the tweet, Umar IDN Khattab who uses the handle Ericetse told the actor that he should sell his V8 car which was spotted somewhere at the corner of the photo because it can purchase MacBooks for all the kids.

We cannot tell if John Dumelo got angry by the question or not but his answer we think was very good for Ericetse’s tweet. According to the multiple award-winning actor, he has taken care of over 55,000 kids across Africa and he believes the amount he spent on them can buy 5 V8 cars.

He made this promise when he was called on stage, together with actress Zynell Zuh, to present the Best Rapper award.

As reported by the Daily Guide Newspaper, Dumelo was apprehended by National Security operatives with a vehicle said to belong to the state.

It was retrieved from a spraying shop at Abelemkpe in Accra.

Dumelo, who campaigned vigorously for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2016 electioneering campaign, seemed unperturbed when he was ushered unto the stage with ‘Onaapo’, the popular campaign song for the then governing NDC.

With a dance as he made his way to present the award, the talented actor sang one of NPP’s campaign songs and said he would reward the winner of the category with a brand new 2017 V8 vehicle.

“The winner is getting a brand-new V8,” the crowd cheered as he added, “2017 model”.

Well that winner turned out to be the son of Tsatsu Tsikata, who defended the NDC government in the famous election petition case in 2013. Watch the video below:
