The baby, who faced life-threatening breathing difficulties immediately after birth, was buried on Wednesday evening at the Goaso Municipal hospital.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem on Friday, Mr. Sintim recalled the financial and emotional toll of the ordeal.

“We really wasted money from the time she was born until she passed. She was on oxygen every hour at 20 cedis for two days. You can imagine the cost,” he said.

He added that after all expenses were settled, the hospital mortuary staff handled the burial. “They asked us to pay some money, and they buried her in a box. I was there to oversee everything,” Mr. Sintim explained, his voice heavy with grief.

The tragedy follows the heroic efforts of staff at the Asunafo South District Hospital, who tried to save the newborn referred from a maternity home in Nobeko near Kukuom.

Despite limited equipment, the medical team administered antibiotics, oxygen, suction, and manual ventilation to stabilize the infant.

“Even though the staff did everything they could, she could not survive,” Mr. Sintim said, reflecting the heartbreaking reality faced by many families in regions with limited emergency medical resources.

Preliminary reports suggest that the act was allegedly committed by the baby’s mother, who fled the scene.

The body has been handed over to the police for further investigations.

The Ghana National Fire Service commended the Suhum rescue team for their swift response and professionalism in handling what has been described as a heartbreaking incident.

She was found by chance when a shepherd, who had taken his goats to the area for grazing, heard faint cries coming from under a mound of earth.

Once he went closer, he saw a tiny hand sticking out of the mud. After he alerted the villagers, police were called in who came and dug out the baby.

Police have not said who they suspect for the crime, but similar cases of abandonment and attempts to kill female children are blamed on India’s preference for sons, which is widely acknowledged to be the reason for its skewed gender ratio.

The incident took place in Shahjahanpur district in India’s most populous state. The baby is being treated in the neonatal intensive care unit of the government-run medical college and hospital there.

Medical college principal Dr Rajesh Kumar told the BBC that the infant was brought in on Monday, smeared in dirt and gasping for air as mud had gone into her mouth and nostrils.

“She was in a critical condition, she was showing signs of hypoxia or oxygen deficiency. She had been bitten by insects and also some animal,” Dr Kumar said.

“After 24 hours we saw a minor improvement in her condition, but she has since deteriorated. She has developed an infection,” he added.

Dr Kumar said he believed the baby had been found soon after she was buried as her “wounds were fresh”.

A team of doctors, including a plastic surgeon, were treating the baby and they were trying to control her infection, he said.

“The prognosis is grave, but we are trying our best to save her,” he added.

A police official said their attempts to track down the baby’s parents had not been successful yet. The child helpline in the state had been informed about the baby, the official added.

The incident in Shahjahanpur is not the first time a female baby has been left to die in India. In 2019, the BBC reported on a premature newborn baby who was found buried alive in a clay pot. After weeks in the hospital, doctors said she had recovered.

India is known to have one of the worst gender ratios in the world. Women face lifelong social discrimination and girls are seen as a financial burden, particularly among poor communities.

Campaigners say a traditional preference for sons has meant millions of female children are lost to foeticide and infanticide over the years.

Although most unwanted female foetuses are aborted with help from illegal sex determination clinics, cases of baby girls being killed after birth are not uncommon either.

Police in Kebbi State have rescued a newborn girl who was allegedly buried alive by her 20-year-old mother in the Nasarawa area of Kamba, Dandi Local Government Area.

The mother, identified as Maryam Atiku, was arrested after reportedly attempting to take the life of her baby shortly after delivery on June 25, 2025. Police said she allegedly strangled the child with wrappers, covered her mouth, and buried her in a shallow grave at Malam Yaro bush.

The following day, farmer Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad noticed a freshly dug grave on his farmland. Suspecting foul play, he raised the alarm. Residents dug up the site and, to their shock, found the baby alive.

The infant was immediately rushed to the General Hospital, Kamba, where doctors confirmed she was in stable condition.

Following the discovery, operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) swiftly arrested Atiku, who allegedly confessed to the act during interrogation.

Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, CP Bello M. Sani, condemned the incident, describing it as “a grave act of child abuse and violence.” He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to tackling child rights violations and gender-based violence, urging families and communities to prioritize child protection.

The Commissioner also commended farmer Kabiru Muhammad for his vigilance, which ultimately saved the child’s life, and acknowledged the support of the Kebbi First Lady, Zainab Nasir, who has stepped in to assist with the baby’s welfare.

Thaddeus Daniel Pierce was born on 26 July in Ohio to Lindsey and Tim Pierce, using an “adopted” embryo from Linda Archerd, 62, from more than 30 years ago.

In the early 1990s, Archerd and her then husband decided to try in vitro fertilisation (IVF) after struggling to become pregnant. In 1994 four embryos resulted: one was transferred to Archerd and resulted in the birth of a daughter, who is now 30 and mother to a 10-year-old. The other embryos were cryopreserved and stored.

“We didn’t go into it thinking we would break any records,” Lindsey told the MIT Technology Review, which first reported the story. “We just wanted to have a baby.”

IVF is a type of fertility treatment where eggs are retrieved from a woman’s ovaries and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory setting. The resulting embryos are then transferred back into the womb. The embryos can also be frozen and stored for future use.

Archerd was awarded custody of the embryos after divorcing her husband. She then found out about embryo “adoption”, a type of embryo donation in which both donors and recipients have a say in who receives the embryos.

Archerd had a preference for her embryo to be “adopted” by a white, Christian married couple, leading to the Pierces adopting the embryo.

“We had a rough birth, but we’re both doing well now,” Lindsey said. “He is so chill. We are in awe that we have this precious baby.”

Archerd said: “The first thing that I noticed when Lindsey sent me his pictures is how much he looks like my daughter when she was a baby. I pulled out my baby book and compared them side by side, and there is no doubt that they are siblings.”

The fertility clinic that transferred the embryo is run by John Gordon, a reproductive endocrinologist and Reformed Presbyterian who is working to reduce the number of embryos in storage.

Speaking of the embryo transfer, Gordon said: “We have certain guiding principles, and they’re coming from our faith. Every embryo deserves a chance at life and that the only embryo that cannot result in a healthy baby is the embryo not given the opportunity to be transferred into a patient.”

In the UK the proportion of IVF births has increased from 1.3% in 2000 to 3.1% in 2023, the equivalent of one in 32 UK births, roughly one child in every classroom.

For women aged 40 to 44, 11% of UK births were a result of IVF, up from 4% in 2000, accounting for 0.5% of all births, according to the Human Fertilisation and Embryo Authority (HFEA). In the US, about 2% of births are from IVF.

The incident occurred around 11:29 p.m. when residents reportedly heard cries coming from the public latrine and quickly alerted the Obuasi Fire Station.

Responding swiftly, firefighters successfully retrieved the infant from the pit latrine after a coordinated operation.

Miraculously, the baby was found alive and in stable condition despite the dire environment. Some community members assisted in cleaning the baby while waiting for emergency medical services.

The newborn was later handed over to health officials for further evaluation and care.

Authorities have not yet commented on the circumstances surrounding the incident, but police are expected to launch an investigation.

The girl, who had reportedly been out of school for weeks due to her pregnancy, was convinced by her headteacher to take part in the exams. But during the ICT paper on Monday, she asked to be excused to use the washroom. It was there that she went into labour.

A policewoman escorting her quickly raised the alarm. She got support from community members, who helped her deliver safely in one of the officers at the exam centre.

“She’s my landlord’s daughter. We saw her coming to write the exam and we saw her use the washroom. She couldn’t walk when she was coming back, and I noticed she was in labour so I rushed there. We helped her deliver here before taking her to the hospital. The baby is fine,” said one of the women who assisted.

Another woman narrated “she hasn’t given birth before, but we realized she was in labour. She couldn’t even walk. We slowly took her to the office and we the women all assisted so the men wouldn’t come there. It was a smooth delivery, but we had to take her to the hospital to take the umbilical cord.”

The head pastor in charge of Asenua Presby Church, Rev. Kennedy Opoku, intervened and rushed the girl to a private hospital due to the absence of health workers in government hospitals.

“Since nurses are on strike, we thought it right to go straight to a private hospital so that they attend to her. When we got there, they helped her bring the placenta out. They came to the car on arrival and helped her out in the car,” he recalled.

Despite the ordeal, the young mother returned Tuesday morning to continue with the rest of her papers.

School authorities, prioritizing her safety and dignity as a minor, denied any media interaction.

Answering to the question as to whether provisions are made in case of similar situations, the Deputy PRO for the Ghana Education Service (GES), Elizabeth Marfo, who has served in the Mamponteng district for over 15 years, said “for the time I’ve been working as an officer for GES, no; we don’t have that. We always come for the exam but this is my first time observing such.”

Officials say the teenage mother is in stable condition, and arrangements are being made to ensure her comfort and safety throughout the remaining days of the examination.

Maame Esi indicated that, she aided her sister in delivery last week Monday but the baby suddenly disappeared.

“I assisted her to deliver last week Monday at home. After a week, the baby is nowhere to be found. I interrogated her and she confessed to giving the baby to an unnamed person for GH¢300, but has refused to disclose the identity of the person,” she narrated.

She added that, her sister initially admitted to handing over the baby to a nurse who promised to get her a buyer, but has also refused to name the said nurse.

“Initially she said she handed over the baby to a nurse who promised to sell the baby for her, but she has refused to name her. She is now telling us the baby is currently in Accra but can’t lead us to the exact place. We are currently looking for help to find the whereabouts of the baby,” she said.

According to Esi, the whereabout of the baby has since not been known almost three weeks after delivery.

Mena Efua is said to have handed the baby to someone who promised to get her a buyer.

However, the person only returned with GH¢300 after trading the baby.

The case was initially reported at the Sekondi Police Station where it was refereed to Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU)

Further checks at the Regional DOVVSU office revealed police have started their investigations into the case.

The lifeless body of the newborn was later discovered on a local farmer’s land at approximately 4:00 PM on the same day. The farmer, Mr Azasu, immediately informed community elders.

Mr. Azasu, with the assistance of the community elders, tracked down the suspect.

After thorough interrogation, Elizabeth admitted to the act, revealing the circumstances that led to the baby’s abandonment and subsequent death.

Abigail Mensah, the sister of the accused, provided further insight into the situation. She disclosed that Elizabeth had moved to her residence at Akatsi from Ada, a different location, with her pregnancy, in order to give birth.

On the morning of the incident, Elizabeth repeatedly left the house to address her needs, returning with visible blood stains. Despite questioning from family members, she remained tight-lipped about the ordeal.

Community elders intervened, coaxing her to reveal the truth. Eventually, Elizabeth admitted to the shocking act of abandoning her newborn baby, which led to the tragic death of the infant.

Subsequently, the police were informed and took her into custody for further investigations.

The lifeless body of the baby has been released to the family for proper burial.

The deceased was found at a refuse dump in the early hours of Friday, January 20, 2023, wrapped in a cloth.

Mr Kwaku Bawah, a staff of Zoomlion Ghana Limited and an eyewitness, who confirmed the story to the Ghana News Agency, said he went to the refuse dump at dawn as has been his daily routine.

“On arrival, l saw a baby covered with a cloth but the legs were showing so l raised alarm and some neighbours came over only to realize the baby had already passed away.”

He said they informed the Assembly Member of Anorku Electoral Area, Mr Akwasi Prince Tano, who reported the incident to the Sefwi-Bekwai District Police Command.

The Assembly Member for Dominibo electoral area, Nana Kwasi Abeam Danso Mills, also confirmed the mother of the baby has been fished out.

He added that she is receiving psychological help whereas the police are yet to be involved in the case.

The baby boy was dipped into the well with his two hands up, with black thread tying his neck while wearing diapers with beads on both legs, and hands.

The residents in the area got to know about the incident after some people had gone there to fetch water where they found the baby floating in the well where the alarm was blown for more helping hands.

According to residents, this is the second time such an incident has happened in the area and they believe the perpetrators live around and well calculated the movement of the people to execute their cruel acts.

A unit committee secretary who gave his name as Wofa Atta hinted that they would organize a search party for the perpetrators by going from house to house.

Meanwhile, a team of police officers in Assin Fosu led by Chief Inspector Rose upon hearing the sad incident rushed to the scene and called the fire service crew to intervene as they work tirelessly to rescue the baby.

They successfully retrieved the baby and quickly handed him over to the team of ambulance service for first aid treatment and onward transportation to the hospital.

But unfortunately, the baby was clinically pronounced dead on arrival.

According to the police, although the baby’s parents were not immediately known, investigation led to the arrest of the father, a 39-year-old man who gave the mother of the baby’s name as Janet Saawah, 23 years old.

The father, however, could not tell the police what could have influenced the mother’s nasty decision since he provides for the need of the baby and the mother as well.

Meanwhile, the mother is currently at large, efforts are far advanced to get her arrested, police assured.

Ama Tawiah allegedly abandoned the three months old baby boy on a footpath near a bush in the farming community of Beahu about two days ago.

It was gathered that the mother, who does not hail from the farming community, after committing the alleged crime boarded a car and left the area.

According to sources, later in the same day, some women who were going to the bush to look for some firewood found the baby wrapped in a cloth crying in the scorching sun and quickly went and rescued him.

The case was subsequently reported to the police and the little baby was later handed over to the Department of Social Welfare.

The Social Welfare Department made announcements at some radio stations about the baby and the need for the mother to report to the outfit.

Ama Tawiah later reported herself to claim her baby.

Narrating her ordeal, the mother of Miracle, Mrs Favour Chikwe disclosed that she had left Miracle with his father on Friday, October 7, 2022, to use the convenience, when the incident happened.

Favour recalled that she overheard her baby crying uncontrollably and had to rush back to know the cause of her cry only for her to discover that his right hand was swollen and bone broken from the beating he received from his father.

Amatobi, it was learnt, confessed that the baby was disturbing him with his cry while he was sleeping and he had to try to stop him by battering him.

Upon noticing that he has broken the baby’s hand, he used sticks and rubber bands to bind the broken bones together.

She said: “When l confronted him about what he did, he locked us in the room, to prevent me from telling people about his wicked deed or seek for help. He also collected my phone from me so that I will not call the neighbours.”

She narrated how she managed to take the baby to hospitals in the community that refused to treat the baby before she took him to FMC Owerri where the amputation was done.

The woman appealed for support to save her child while calling on the state government, NHRC and other civil society organizations to assist her to get justice for her son.

She is, at a point in time, heard yelling at the victim to stand up and bathe.

The Ugandan police in a tweet revealed that Dorothy has been arrested and will be presented before a court on Monday.

Meanwhile, the victim has been handed to close relatives pending further investigations.

There has been calls for Nabulime Dorothy to be taken for mental health check-up and rehabilitation.

The video cuts to CCTV footage of the building and shows the three-year-old girl slipping out of the window and quickly tumbling downwards.

The video has garnered over 158,000 views and 9,000 likes.

After receiving treatment at the Tongxiang Second People’s Hospital on Friday, the toddler was discharged.

The man told Chinese media outlets that he heard a bang coming from the top of the apartment building and looked up to see the small toddler tumbling out of the window. He described himself as lucky to have caught the girl on time and explained that it was sheer instinct.

Weibo users hailed the man as a “hero,” including Zhao, who described the Good Samaritan as “heroes among us” in his Twitter post.

“Tribute to ordinary heroes,” one user wrote.

“For parents with children, add a protective window or window safety valve to your home,” another user suggested.

The horrifying incident took place in the rural village of Dunka, close to Bareilly in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, where Nirdesh Upadhyay was standing on the terrace of his three-story house with his wife and their baby son.

The trio were enjoying a lazy Friday evening up on the terrace when a troop of the primates clambered onto the roof and surrounded them.

After futile efforts to bat the monkeys away, the new parents ran towards the stairs in an attempt to escape but Nirdesh, who was carrying his son, stumbled and dropped the child. 

In a split second before either parent could react, one of the monkeys grabbed the baby boy by the hand and hurled him off the roof. 

Distraught, the parents managed to get back inside the house and tore downstairs to their son’s aid, but the infant reportedly died at the scene.

The incident is now under investigation with authorities at the Shahi police station, and Bareilly city’s conservation chief, Lalit Verma, told PTI News his team were dispatched to investigate the involvement of monkeys in the child’s death.

Uttar Pradesh is home to a huge population of rhesus monkeys, which roam free throughout many of the state’s towns and cities.

Although the primates are generally able to live in relative harmony alongside the humans who reside in these settlements, there are a number of documented cases of the monkeys attacking people, in particular children.

Jenny Hayes, a sex worker, was accused of a horrifying triple murder after the fire that claimed the lives of a young family in the early hours of December 2, 2020.

Abigail Forrest, 19, Inderpal Singh, 28, and their three-week old child Ivy Forrest were killed after the fire ripped through the second level of their townhouse and they were unable to escape.

Hayes initially pleaded not guilty to three charges of murder as well as three charges of causing death by arson.

However, on Wednesday, the 47-year-old appeared by video link in Victoria’s Supreme Court from Dame Phyliis Frost Centre, a women-only prison, to change her latter plea to one of guilt.

The Court heard of how Hayes had been with a client at the home in Cook Point, 22km from Melbourne’s CBD on December 2, in the downstairs part of the house, in Melbourne, Australia.

She had returned to the home later that night and set her client’s mattress on fire. She claimed she did not know that the young family lived upstairs and that while her client wasn’t home, they were.

Soon after the fire and her arrest, Hayes sent a text message to her son, admitting to him: “I think I did something stupid”, Nine News reports.

She also sent him an image of the burnt mattress she used to set the property on fire.

The remains of Abigail and Inderpal, who had moved to the property only days before, were found in the ashes.

At the time, Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Kennedy said officers found a mattress that appeared to have been slept on recently as they searched the townhouse.

He added the house was “fully engulfed” when the fire brigade arrived, saying: “The townhouse was raging, particularly at the front and upstairs … [and] with accidental fires that doesn’t normally occur.”

Other townhouses nearby were also damaged because of the fire, which was eventually brought under control in about an hour.

Mr Kennedy added that a neighbour tried to rescue the family, but unfortunately “the fire took its toll and nothing could be done.”

Emily Forrest, Abbey’s sister, created a GoFundMe page to help with the cost of the funerals of the family-of-three which went on to raise nearly £20,000.

Family members of the victims were on video link on Wednesday to witness Hayes admit to the crimes.

She will return to court to enter a formal plea of guilty on November 7, The Australian reports.

It is not clear what species of monkey attacked the mother.

Kigoma Regional Commander James Manyama said the child had died after villagers tried to use force against the monkey to rescue the child.

Mr Manyama said the baby was injured on the head and neck, and later passed away as he was receiving treatment.

The police have urged citizens to continue to be vigilant.

Holly Marie vanished alongside her parents Harold Dean Clouse and Tina Clouse shortly after they had moved from Florida to Texas.

The bodies of Holly Marie’s parents were identified in October 2021, having been found in Texas in 1981.

However, there was no sign of baby Holly until recently when she was found living in Oklahoma and positively identified.

The family that raised Holly are not being treated as suspects in the case of her parents’ murders.

Harold Dean’s mother Donna Casasanta has spent the last four decades seeking answers, according to the Houston Chronicle, and was delighted to receive a phone call confirming that Holly had been found this week.

“Finding Holly is a birthday present from heaven since we found her on Junior’s birthday,” Casasanta said in a statement released by a family spokeswoman to the Houston Chronicle.

“I prayed for more than 40 years for answers and the Lord has revealed some of it.”

Casasanta regularly received letters from her son after he relocated to Texas, before they stopped abruptly in October 1980.

Several months later she received an anonymous call from someone who said she had found the family’s car in California, with three women clad in white robes driving it all the was back to Donna in Florida.

One of the women, who referred to herself as ‘Sister Susan’, told Donna that her son had become a member of a cult, given up his possessions and would be cutting all ties with his past – including his family.

“That was weird,” Donna told the Chronicle. “We really got frightened, and we started searching and searching.”

In January 1981, a German Shepherd found the remains of a human arm, prompting a police search of an area in Harris County, Texas.

Two bodies were found a week later but it was only 40 years later, with improvements in technology and DNA databases, that they were identified as the Clouses.

Dean Harold had been beaten to death and Tina had been strangled; both had been dead for some time when they were discovered.

The Texas Attorney General’s Office took control of the case once the Clouse’s remains were identified, and at a press conference revealed that baby Holly had been dropped off at a church in Arizona by two white robe-clad women, who claimed to be part of a nomadic religious group.

“The Linn and Clouse families have been searching for answers concerning the welfare of the Clouses and their daughter, Holly since they were last heard from in 1980,” said a statement from the Texas Attorney General’s Office, reported the Houston Chronicle.

“Baby Holly has been located alive and well and is now 42 years of age. Holly has been notified of the identities of her biological parents and has been in contact with her extended biological family and they hope to meet in person soon.”

The baby is believed to have crawled to the well, which is inside her parents’ house and slipped when the mother was away to buy food.

According to the police, the tragic incident occurred around 7:00 pm on May 29, 2022, adding that the body was found two days after the incident.

Police sources indicate that the mother of the baby girl, Rita Atuah, 28, accompanied by her husband, Akwasi Agyemang, 33, reported the incident at the Pokukrom Police Station.

“And the former reported that on Sunday, May 29, 2022, about 1700 hrs, she left her child (name withheld), aged one-year four-months in her room, while she was asleep to go and buy food for her.

“That she returned home and the child was nowhere to be found. A search party was organised and on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at 0700 hrs, the body of the child was found in a well near the house,” the report noted.

The body had since been removed and deposited at Plus Lab Mortuary awaiting autopsy and investigations, the police report added.
