Citi News reports that the incident occurred between 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, when the armed men allegedly stormed the family’s home in a community near Bimbilla.

According to the family, the attackers initially demanded to see the boy’s father, who was not present at the time.

They reportedly searched the house for money but found none, after which they tied up the teenager and forcibly took him to an unknown destination.

The boy’s father, Issah Laulau, later received a phone call from the alleged kidnappers on Sunday morning, during which they demanded a ransom for the boy’s release.

The suspects are also said to have questioned him about the number of cattle he owns and insisted he raise money in exchange for his son.

The family, who are cattle herders living near Bimbilla, suspect the attackers may also be from the region, based on the language they reportedly spoke during the operation.

They have called on the police and other security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the teenager and ensure the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

First batch of Ghanaians to be airlifted from South Africa on May 26 – Okudzeto Ablakwa https://www.adomonline.com/first-batch-of-ghanaians-to-be-airlifted-from-south-africa-on-may-26-okudzeto-ablakwa/ Sun, 24 May 2026 13:51:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665476 All is set for the evacuation of Ghanaian nationals in South Africa to begin as Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has confirmed that the first batch of Ghanaians will depart in the early hours of Tuesday, May 26, 2026, with the government promising a structured and dignified reception upon their return home.

Speaking at a meeting with some anxious Ghanaians at the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria, the minister said Ghana’s government has finally reached an agreement with South African authorities about the exercise.

“Fortunately, we have concluded with the South African authorities that our aircraft can come in by midnight on the 25th, so that by 5am, you set off because we don’t want you to reach Ghana at night. We want to have time to take you through the process and give the necessary assistance,” he assured.

He added that if all goes as planned, returnees should be touching down on Ghanaian soil by mid-afternoon. “We anticipate that by 3pm you’ll be in Ghana.”

The timing is to ensure that returnees are processed and supported in daylight, with sufficient time for officials to administer the full welcome package — including financial assistance, transport to home regions, and psychosocial support — before nightfall.

The minister also revealed that prominent Ghanaian industrialist, Ibrahim Mahama, has already pledged 100 job opportunities for returnees — a gesture the minister described as “a good challenge” to other business leaders.

“Ibrahim Mahama has just informed us that he has a hundred jobs for some of you, which is a good challenge. We’ll speak to other CEOs to see how they can also help, so that the young ones who are still able to work do not idle at home.”

The minister’s appearance at the Pretoria meeting came after weeks of growing pressure from the Ghanaian community in South Africa, with viral videos showing distressed citizens pleading for evacuation and describing deteriorating safety conditions. More than 800 Ghanaians had registered with the High Commission in Pretoria seeking assistance to return home, with logistical and legal hurdles delaying earlier planned departure dates.

‘I’m sick and tired of this country’ – Ghanaians in South Africa pour out frustrations at meeting with Foreign Affairs minister https://www.adomonline.com/im-sick-and-tired-of-this-country-ghanaians-in-south-africa-pour-out-frustrations-at-meeting-with-foreign-affairs-minister/ Sun, 24 May 2026 12:59:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665465 In an emotionally charged meeting at the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria, with Ghana’s Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, distressed Ghanaian nationals gave raw and unfiltered accounts of the fear, legal uncertainty, and economic devastation they have endured amid the wave of xenophobic attacks sweeping the country.

The meeting, captured on video, laid bare the depth of the crisis facing Ghana’s estimated 20,000-strong community in South Africa — a community now fractured between those desperate to leave and those trapped by circumstances they cannot easily walk away from.

One distressed man, identifying himself as a teacher who had been working legally in South Africa, did not mince words.

“We don’t want to stay here. I’m sick and tired of this country,” he said directly to the minister. “I have been working as a teacher in this country. Not that Ghanaians are illegal — but the Home Affairs [department] forces most of them to be illegal.”

He explained that many Ghanaians who once held valid legal status have found themselves in bureaucratic limbo, with permanent residency permits revoked without clear justification, and business permits that were renewed multiple times suddenly declared fraudulent by authorities.

The man also described an incident involving a Ghanaian woman who was knocked down by a car. He said he personally took up her case, hired a lawyer at his own expense, and pursued it to its conclusion — only to be told the claim had been declined.

Another speaker, a woman, raised urgent concern for Ghanaians living outside Pretoria who are too scared to travel to register for the repatriation programme.

“Some of us outside Pretoria can’t even travel by bus or taxi to come and register their names, because they are scared,” she said. “The moment they started the makwerekwere style” — a derogatory term used by some South Africans against foreign nationals — “they have to divert the taxis somewhere. So what about them? What are the safety measures towards them?”

Her words highlighted a critical gap in the evacuation effort: that the most vulnerable Ghanaians, those stranded in townships and smaller towns beyond the capital, may be entirely unreachable.

A business owner at the meeting offered what was perhaps the starkest assessment of the situation, warning that the current wave of anti-immigrant sentiment is not a passing storm.

“What we are seeing or witnessing is not something that is going to end today,” he said. “Most of them have put these guys who are doing these demonstrations on the payroll — a strong one. So it’s not something that’s going to end today.”

Looking ahead to a worst-case scenario, the businessman said he had already begun exploring whether South African counterparts could formally take over Ghanaian-owned businesses through a regulated process.

“I’m looking at a worse scenario as a business owner — discussing with South African counterparts if they can actually have a takeover plan of Ghanaian businesses. At the VTI, they’ve got a takeover regulatory panel where they will be able to give us offers so that they can take over those businesses to local South Africans, so that we can leave peacefully.”

A Government Responding

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has since announced a support package for evacuees, including a “Welcome Home Financial Package,” transport assistance, a reintegration allowance, and free psychosocial support services.

By May 21, over 800 Ghanaians had registered at the High Commission in Pretoria for evacuation, with the first batch of returnees expected to depart once a verification and screening exercise is completed.

But as the voices from that Pretoria meeting make clear, the numbers alone do not capture the full weight of what is being lost — livelihoods built over decades, legal status stripped away by bureaucratic decisions, and a deep sense of betrayal felt by people who played by the rules and still found themselves unsafe.

For many of them, the question is no longer whether to go home. It is whether Ghana will be ready to truly receive them when they do.

Police arrest four Ada SHTS students over viral cutlass threat video https://www.adomonline.com/police-arrest-four-ada-shts-students-over-viral-cutlass-threat-video/ Sun, 24 May 2026 07:20:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665410 Four students of Ada Senior High Technical School have been arrested after a video showing a student brandishing a cutlass and threatening colleagues on campus went viral on social media.

According to a statement from the Tema Regional Police Command, the footage came to the attention of officers at around 12:10 a.m. on May 22, 2026, prompting the immediate deployment of a night patrol team to the school.

With support from school authorities, police arrested Raymond Gyamfi, Oscar Amemoair, and Odartey Wilson, all aged 18, along with a juvenile — all of whom were identified in the video. The four are currently in custody and assisting with investigations.

The Command urged students to resolve disagreements through established school structures rather than resorting to violence or intimidation, and called on parents and school authorities to strengthen supervision and discipline to help maintain safety on campuses.

“The Command assures the public that investigations are ongoing and further developments will be communicated in due course,” the statement said.

Ghanaian released after 77 days in Burkinabe detention https://www.adomonline.com/ghanaian-released-after-77-days-in-burkinabe-detention/ Sat, 23 May 2026 18:44:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665355 A 28-year-old Ghanaian, Zakaria Abubakari from Savelugu, has recounted his ordeal after spending 77 days in detention in Burkina Faso following his arrest during a military operation.

According to Mr Zakaria, he was arrested on February 26, 2026, at about 7:00 p.m. in Kongoussi while staying in the home of a Good Samaritan, whom he described as a Mossi man he did not know personally.

He explained that he was travelling through the area on his way to an undisclosed destination in Mali when armed soldiers stormed the house and arrested him.

Mr Zakaria said he was blindfolded immediately after the arrest and transported to a military detention facility in Kaya, where he spent 13 days in custody.

He was later transferred to another undisclosed location, where he remained detained for about 50 days before being moved again to Ouagadougou. There, he spent additional days in police custody before eventually being released in late April.

According to him, security officials repeatedly questioned him about his presence in Kongoussi, an area heavily affected by the activities of non-state armed groups, particularly Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin.

Mr Zakaria stated that after investigations, authorities found no incriminating evidence linking him to any jihadist group.

He, however, claimed that none of his confiscated belongings, including his clothes, were returned to him.

“They only took me to a bus station barefoot and empty-handed and told me to return to Ghana,” he recounted.

Mr Zakaria said he relied on the support of Good Samaritans, who assisted him with transport fare after hearing about his ordeal.

He has since reunited with his family in Ghana after returning from Burkina Faso.

The development comes as Ghanaian intelligence agencies continue their search for another individual, Ibrahim Sadat, a native of Wuru in the Sissala District of the Upper West Region, who was allegedly arrested by Burkinabe security forces on March 3, 2026, after crossing into the town of Kounou in Burkina Faso.

It also follows the disappearance of seven Ghanaians, all natives of the Bawku Municipality, who were reportedly invited in 2023 by alleged Burkinabe military personnel for a cattle identification exercise in Bittou, the capital of Boulgou Province.

The seven individuals were allegedly intercepted by armed men in the town of Nohao and have not been found since.

Medical screening results for security services recruitment to be released next week – Interior Minister https://www.adomonline.com/medical-screening-results-for-security-services-recruitment-to-be-released-next-week-interior-minister/ Sat, 23 May 2026 16:31:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665347 The government has announced that results from the medical examinations conducted for applicants in the ongoing security services recruitment exercise will be released next week.

Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, disclosed that more than 105,000 applicants advanced to the medical screening stage, far exceeding the initial target of recruiting 5,000 personnel.

Speaking during President John Dramani Mahama’s “Resetting Ghana” citizens’ engagement in the Savannah Region on Saturday, May 23, the Interior Minister said government was working closely with Members of Parliament in the region to ensure fairness and transparency throughout the recruitment process.

According to him, applicants who successfully pass the medical screening will be given fair consideration as government moves to increase the intake into the various security services.

“I can assure Ghanaians that next week, the results of the medicals that have been conducted will be released. And graciously, His Excellency intervened with the Minister of Finance to double the intake that we are going to take,” he said.

Mr Mubarak explained that the decision to expand recruitment followed discussions between President Mahama and the Ministry of Finance to create room for more qualified applicants.

The recruitment exercise forms part of government’s broader efforts to strengthen the country’s security services while also creating employment opportunities for the youth.

According to the Queen Mother, academic activities were suspended for one week following the sudden death of the headmistress, Madam Gladys Dorlo Batinge, as fear and tension gripped the community.

She revealed that concerns deepened after another teacher reportedly died under unusual circumstances, triggering speculation among residents about the possible cause of the deaths.

Nana Ameyaa Ansu Gyeabour explained that some community members suspect the incidents may be linked to an alleged curse invoked by a native associated with the nearby Nzor community over accusations of extortion involving some school authorities.

Speaking to the media, the Queen Mother said the traditional council has stepped in to help resolve the matter and restore calm in the community.

Meanwhile, the Krotihene of Kɔbɛdi, Nana Korang Amoah Asimpi, has criticised what he described as false and misleading reports circulating in sections of the media regarding the closure of the community’s only basic school.

He called on journalists and media houses to uphold professionalism by verifying information before publishing stories that could create panic and misunderstanding among residents.

Heavy downpour leaves Kaneshie and other parts of Accra flooded [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/heavy-downpour-leaves-kaneshie-and-other-parts-of-accra-flooded-video/ Fri, 22 May 2026 20:03:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665194 Heavy rains on Friday have caused flooding in parts of Accra, with Kaneshie among the worst-hit areas as floodwaters submerged roads and disrupted movement.

Several vehicles were seen stranded, while pedestrians struggled to navigate waterlogged streets following hours of rainfall across sections of the capital.

Areas around the Kpone Barrier, Santa Maria, among others, have also experienced significant flooding, forcing some commuters and traders to seek shelter as drainage systems overflowed.

Residents in other parts of Accra also reported flooding, with concerns once again being raised over the city’s perennial drainage challenges during heavy rains.

The rainfall led to heavy traffic congestion on major roads as motorists battled poor visibility and flooded intersections.

There were no immediate reports of casualties as of Friday, although authorities are expected to assess the extent of damage caused by the floods.

One dead, four injured in articulated truck collision at Assin Nsuta https://www.adomonline.com/one-dead-four-injured-in-articulated-truck-collision-at-assin-nsuta/ Fri, 22 May 2026 15:34:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665100 One person has died while four others sustained injuries following a collision involving two articulated trucks on the Cape Coast–Kumasi Highway near Assin Nsuta in the Central Region.

The accident occurred at about 11:12 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, 2026, causing a temporary traffic gridlock on the busy highway.

According to preliminary investigations by the Central North Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), a Shackman articulated truck with registration number GX 3858-25, loaded with klinker and travelling from Takoradi toward Kumasi, hit a deep pothole on the road.

Police say the impact caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which veered into the opposite lane and collided with the rear trailer and tyres of an oncoming Howo flatbed articulated truck with registration number GT 8837-23.

The force of the crash caused extensive damage to both vehicles.

The Howo truck reportedly veered off the road into a nearby bush, while the Shackman truck was left badly mangled at the roadside.

Personnel from the Central North Regional MTTD and the Regional Operations Unit rushed to the scene to rescue victims trapped in the wreckage.

A passenger in the Shackman truck, identified as 36-year-old Vincent Anamman Ofosu, was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

His wife, Bridget Dadzie, 25, who was travelling with him, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Foso.

The driver of the Shackman truck, Gariba Daniel, 33, also suffered severe injuries and remains on admission at the same facility.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the St. Francis Xavier Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The driver of the Howo truck, Yaya Latif, 38, and his driver’s mate, Issah Mohammed, also sustained injuries in the accident.

Both are currently receiving treatment at the Assin Anyinabrim Health Clinic.

Police and emergency personnel worked through the night to clear the wreckage and restore the free flow of traffic on the highway.

The Central North Regional MTTD has since launched investigations into the cause of the accident.

Ghanaian pilgrim dies while performing tawaf at the Haram in Mecca https://www.adomonline.com/ghanaian-pilgrim-dies-while-performing-tawaf-at-the-haram-in-mecca/ Fri, 22 May 2026 13:54:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665084 A 53-yearold Ghanaian pilgrim by name Musah Sidi, has reportedly died in Mecca while performing Tawaf — the ritualistic act of circumambulating the Kabah.

The unfortunate news was announced by the Pilgrims Affairs Office of Ghana (PAOG) in a statement dated May 22, 2026.

Mr. Sidi, according to the statement, collapsed at the Haram during Tawaf and passed away shortly afterwards. His family has been informed of his death, and his body is being prepared for Jannaza prayers following Jummah prayers, ahead of interment.

PAOG noted that dying while performing Tawaf is regarded in Islamic tradition as a profound blessing and a sign of a beautiful end for a Muslim.

“In Islamic tradition, a pilgrim who dies in a state of worship and in Ihram is promised immense spiritual honour in the hereafter,” the statement noted.

The office extended its deepest condolences to the family, sympathisers, and loved ones of the deceased, praying that Allah forgives his shortcomings and grants him Jannatul Firdaus.

Dress properly for visa interviews; it can influence approval – Ghana’s Ambassador to US urges https://www.adomonline.com/dress-properly-for-visa-interviews-it-can-influence-approval-ghanas-ambassador-to-us-urges/ Fri, 22 May 2026 12:18:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665013 Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Emmanuel Victor Smith, has advised visa applicants to pay close attention to their appearance when attending interviews, especially as preparations intensify ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

Speaking in an interview with Adom News, he explained that while visa appointment timelines can typically stretch up to a year, the situation is different given the tournament’s time-bound nature, which is just weeks away.

“Normally, visa appointments can be given one year ahead of time,” he said.

“But because of the World Cup, which is time-bound, they have to interview all applicants before the tournament starts, and the World Cup is just about a month away, so they were rushing, but the procedure is the same,” he explained to Abena Opokua Ahwenee.

Ambassador Smith stressed that visa officers are primarily interested in ensuring applicants have strong ties to their home country and will return after their visit.

“What the interviewing officer expects from you is the same thing,” he said, adding that for countries like the United States, officers want to be convinced applicants will not overstay.

“If you want to travel to America, which has about 50 states, the officer would want to be sure you are tied to Ghana and will come back,” he noted.

He further explained that applicants who are employed or well-established in Ghana are more likely to meet that requirement. However, the situation may be different for applicants without stable ties.

“So take someone who is gainfully employed for instance in Ghana, you will definitely come back to Ghana,” he said.

“But others are hustlers, and they are just going to try,” he added.

The Ambassador also underscored the importance of dressing well for interviews, saying presentation can influence perception.

“So I advise people that look good, dress well when going for visa interviews,” he stated. “Don’t wear tattered clothes because how will you get the visa. You will be denied the visa.”

He urged applicants to present themselves properly and show seriousness of purpose.

“Dress properly and I expect that people would have good intentions, not that they are coming to hustle,” he said.

Mr. Smith also referenced his experience with immigration enforcement in the US, saying it reflects how seriously authorities treat migration issues.

“I have seen how the ICE operates here,” he noted. “They tackle people to the ground in shopping malls and you find people running for their lives. How can you live like that?”

He added that enforcement has recently eased but expressed uncertainty about what to expect during the World Cup period.

“It is now that they have calmed down, and I don’t know if it will be the same during the World Cup. They also feel people are destroying their country. So, if you have nothing to contribute to America, then you stay in your home country,” he cautioned.

Nursing mother arrested for allegedly inflicting blade wounds on 5-year-old in Bole https://www.adomonline.com/nursing-mother-arrested-for-allegedly-inflicting-blade-wounds-on-5-year-old-in-bole/ Fri, 22 May 2026 08:40:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2664919 A 35-year-old nursing mother and seamstress has been arrested by the Bole District Police for allegedly inflicting blade wounds and applying pepper on a five-year-old girl in her care at Bole Mempeasem, a suburb of Bole in the Savannah Region.

The disturbing incident was uncovered on the evening of Wednesday, May 20, 2026, when the Assembly Member for Mempeasem Electoral Area, Hassan Abu Peace Brother, discovered the injured child behind his house at around 7:00pm.

Speaking to Adom News, the Assemblyman recounted he went around trying to locate the child’s parents, as the young girl could only refer to her mother as “mama.”

After successfully locating the guardian, he pleaded with her not to harm the child after being told she always beats the child. However, by the following morning, he received a shocking call.

“An old woman told me the woman will beat the child throughout the night because that’s what she usually does so I confronted the woman but she assured me she won’t beat her. Around 6:00am this morning, however, I received a call that she beat the child and even inflicted blade wounds on her before sending her to school.”

Upon receiving the distress call, the Assemblyman immediately followed up at the child’s school and promptly alerted both the police and social welfare authorities.

School officials then invited the suspect to the premises. On her arrival, she was arrested by police. The Assemblyman has since urged parents to exercise caution when entrusting their children to the care of others.

“If you’re not ready to take care of a child, don’t give birth and hand the child over to someone… every child has the right to live. I’ll support any punishment given to the woman,” he said.

When Adom News interviewed the suspect at the Bole District Police Station, Marijana Alhassan, speaking in her native language, Waala, denied inflicting blade wounds on the child.

She clarified that the victim is not her biological daughter but her husband’s sister’s child, who comes to stay with the family whenever her mother goes on study leave.

She described the child as highly dependent, saying the girl was unable to eat, undress, or use the toilet on her own — a situation she said placed considerable strain on her.

While she admitted pushing the child away in frustration, she claimed the girl fell onto a mopping stick and sustained the injuries as a result. She said she later dressed the child and sent her to school, only to be summoned by school authorities a short while later and subsequently arrested by police upon her arrival at the school.

Marijana Alhassan remains in custody at the Bole District Police Station and is scheduled to appear before the Bole District Magistrate Court on Tuesday.

Social welfare authorities are said to be actively following up on the welfare of the child, who continues to receive medical care at the Bole District Government Hospital.

Wontumi’s fate near as court gives final deadline for witnesses https://www.adomonline.com/wontumis-fate-near-as-court-gives-final-deadline-for-witnesses/ Fri, 22 May 2026 06:41:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2664825 An Accra court has given lawyers for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, a final deadline of Thursday, May 28, 2026, to produce any additional witnesses in his ongoing criminal trial.

The directive was issued in the case Republic v Bernard Antwi Boasiako & 2 Others after counsel for the accused, Andy Appiah-Kubi, prayed the court for more time to call further witnesses following testimony already given by Chairman Wontumi himself.

Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai opposed the request.

He argued that the defence had earlier assured the court that the witnesses would be available this week but failed to produce them.

He further contended that no witness statements had been filed to justify another adjournment.

According to him, court rules also permit the trial to be closed where witnesses are unavailable for cross-examination.

Despite the objection, the court granted the defence one final extension.

The judge ruled that the accused persons must present their witnesses by Thursday, May 28, 2026.

The court warned that failure to do so would mean it would assume the defence has no more witnesses to call.

In that event, the court said it would proceed to order addresses, if any, before fixing a date for judgment.

GN Savings and Loans case is not over – Banking consultant https://www.adomonline.com/gn-savings-and-loans-case-is-not-over-banking-consultant/ Fri, 22 May 2026 06:37:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2664817 Banking consultant Nana Otuo Acheampong says the legal battle surrounding GN Savings and Loans is far from over despite the Court of Appeal ruling restoring the company’s licence.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Thursday, May 21, Mr. Acheampong argued that the matter is likely to proceed to the Supreme Court because one of the parties involved is expected to challenge the latest ruling.

“To me, the case is not over. It will go to the Supreme Court,” he predicted.

According to him, the legal process surrounding the banking sector cleanup has involved several court actions over the years, making it unlikely that the matter would end at the Court of Appeal stage.

“As your colleague gave a history of these court cases, five in a row, I can hazard a guess that the last one will be back to the Supreme Court for them to decide on this issue,” he said.

Mr. Acheampong explained that the Bank of Ghana acted based on the legal framework that governed the financial sector cleanup exercise at the time.

He referenced the Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions Act, 2016 (Act 930), particularly Section 123, as the legal basis used by the central bank to resolve affected institutions.

According to him, GN Savings and Loans was not the only financial institution impacted during the cleanup exercise, noting that several universal banks, savings and loans companies, finance houses and microfinance institutions were also affected.

“It wasn’t only GN Savings and Loans that were resolved. There were some universal banks, some savings and loans, some finance houses, some microfinance institutions,” he stated.

He added that rural and community banks were the only category of institutions that were largely untouched during the exercise.

Mr. Acheampong cautioned against rushing to conclude that GN Savings and Loans would immediately resume operations following the Court of Appeal decision.

He said attention should first be focused on the legal outcome if the matter eventually reaches the Supreme Court.

His comments come after the Court of Appeal unanimously restored the licence of GN Savings and Loans after quashing an earlier High Court decision that upheld the revocation of the company’s licence during the banking sector cleanup exercise.

The appellate court ruled that the decision by the Bank of Ghana to revoke the licence was unfair and unreasonable and ordered the receiver to hand over management and control of the company’s assets and operations back to its shareholders.

Three, including four-month-old baby, killed in accident at Gomoa Akotsi https://www.adomonline.com/three-including-four-month-old-baby-killed-in-accident-at-gomoa-akotsi/ Thu, 21 May 2026 20:22:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2664799 Three people, including a four-month-old baby, have died in a fatal accident on the Winneba–Kasoa Highway between Gomoa Akotsi Junction and Buduatta Junction in the Central Region.

The crash, which occurred on Thursday, involved three vehicles—a private car with registration number DV 9546, a fuel tanker GN 4328-15, and a tipper truck GT 9026-26.

According to reports, the private car was travelling from Winneba towards Kasoa when a pickup allegedly attempted a wrongful overtaking. The manoeuvre is said to have triggered a chain of events that led to the crash.

The private car reportedly lost control and collided head-on with the fuel tanker coming from the opposite direction. Eyewitnesses say the tanker driver tried to apply emergency brakes, but a tipper truck following closely behind crashed into the tanker, worsening the impact.

Two occupants of the private car, including the driver and a female passenger, died on the spot. A four-month-old baby later died after being rushed to St. Gregory Hospital.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with mangled vehicles and frantic rescue efforts as bystanders attempted to assist victims trapped in the wreckage.

This latest incident comes just days after another crash on the same stretch at Gomoa Biakoye, where a driver suffered a broken leg after a 20-foot container reportedly fell onto his vehicle.

Speaking to the media, the Gomoa Ojobi District Police Commander, DSP Samuel Asante, confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the crash.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue, while the injured are receiving treatment.

Abronye finally released after meeting bail conditions (Video) https://www.adomonline.com/abronye-finally-released-after-meeting-bail-conditions-video/ Thu, 21 May 2026 18:43:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2664742 The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, has been released after successfully meeting his bail conditions at the Accra High Court.

The Accra High Court on Thursday morning granted Abronye bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties after he was remanded into custody on May 13, 2026, on charges of false publication.

As part of the conditions, the court ordered the NPP communicator to report to the Police CID once every fortnight, surrender all travel documents, and refrain from travelling outside the jurisdiction without the express permission of the Registrar.

Abronye appeared before the court on a motion for bail pending trial, moved by his counsel, Ofoase-Ayirebi MP and former Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, who was led by former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame.

Speaking after the ruling, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua said although the party disagrees with the circumstances surrounding Abronye’s arrest and detention, it is pleased with the court’s decision on bail.

He further insisted that the case should not have escalated to its current stage, describing it as a misdemeanour that should not have attracted such strict processes at the lower court.

Abronye’s earlier remand drew criticism from some members of the NPP and legal commentators, who argued that the decision amounted to an infringement on his constitutional rights.

However, the presiding judge justified the ruling, explaining that the court was concerned about the possibility of the accused committing another offence if he had been granted immediate bail.

Woman arrested over alleged threats against Mahama in viral social media video https://www.adomonline.com/woman-arrested-over-alleged-threats-against-mahama-in-viral-social-media-video/ Thu, 21 May 2026 14:57:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2664611 The Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET) has arrested a woman, Mahama Aminat, also known as Akosua Serwaa Minat, over alleged threats and offensive remarks directed at President John Dramani Mahama in a viral social media video.

According to the police, the suspect was seen in videos circulating on TikTok making insulting comments about the President and allegedly issuing threats against his life and that of his wife, while also encouraging others to engage in violent acts.

Following the circulation of the videos on May 19, 2026, a joint operation involving CVET and the Surveillance Unit of the National Operations Department tracked and arrested the suspect on May 20 at Sekyere Zongo in the Sekyere Kumawu District of the Ashanti Region.

The suspect is currently in police custody and is expected to be arraigned before court in the coming days.

Authorities say the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to monitor and clamp down on abusive, threatening, and unlawful content circulating on social media platforms.

Court of Appeal restores license of GN Savings and Loans https://www.adomonline.com/court-of-appeal-restores-license-of-gn-savings-and-loans/ Thu, 21 May 2026 11:26:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2664498 The Court of Appeal has by an unanimous decision restored the license of GN Savings and Loans Company Limited.

That was after a three-member panel of the second-highest court quashed the decision of the High Court, which upheld the revocation of the license on the grounds that the decision to revoke the license was unfair and unreasonable.

By the judgment, both the decision to revoke the license and the High Court decision to uphold same has been quashed.

The court ordered the receiver should also hand over possession, management and control of the assets and other activities to shareholders of the company.

Background

On January 4, 2019, GN Bank Limited was reclassified as a savings and loans company and consequently renamed GN Savings and Loans Company Limited.

Seven months later, on August 16, 2019, the BoG, then under the leadership of Dr Ernest Addison, revoked the operating licence of GN Savings and Loans Company Limited and appointed Eric Nana Nipah as Receiver as part of the banking sector clean-up exercise.

The same month, Groupe Nduom, owners of GN Savings and Loans Company Limited, led by Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, challenged the revocation of the licence in the High Court in Accra.

On January 24, 2024, Justice Addo upheld the revocation of the licence.

It is this judgment of the High Court which owners of GN Savings and Loans Company Limited, led by Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, challenged that has been quashed.

Abronye granted GH¢100,000 bail https://www.adomonline.com/abronye-granted-gh%c2%a2100000-bail/ Thu, 21 May 2026 09:59:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2664449 The Accra High Court has granted bail to the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe Abronye, in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties, following his arrest and detention in the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) on May 13.

As part of the bail conditions, his travel documents have been seized, restricting him from leaving the country while investigations continue.

The development comes after the court on Wednesday, May 20, adjourned proceedings when the prosecution prayed for a short date to enable it to file its response to the bail application.

Abronye is currently facing two charges: offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace and publication of false news.

Counsel for Abronye, Daniel Amartey Addo, led by former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame, opposed the request, arguing that the Republic had already been served with the application on May 14, 2026.

Assistant State Attorney Grace Delali Tali, however, told the court that although the Republic had been served on May 14, the period amounted to three clear days and not six.

She conceded that the motion was ripe for hearing but argued that the prosecution needed time to consult investigators and familiarise itself with the case before responding appropriately.

Ruling on the matter, the court said it had considered the request by the Republic and was obliged to grant it while balancing justice and the rights of the accused.

His detention has sparked political discussion within party and public circles, given his prominence as one of the outspoken regional executives of the NPP.

‘He sold his cow to repay debt’ – How headmistress forced ex-staff to return wrongly paid salary https://www.adomonline.com/he-sold-his-cow-to-repay-debt-how-headmistress-forced-ex-staff-to-return-wrongly-paid-salary/ Thu, 21 May 2026 09:02:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2664400 The Headmistress of Islamic Girls Senior High School (SHS), Safia Salifu, has told Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) how a former staff member sold his cow to refund a wrongfully paid salary after she invited the police to intervene in the matter.

The issue emerged during the proceedings of the committee when members sought clarification on steps taken to retrieve unearned salaries involving two former staff members of the school.

Responding to questions from the committee, the headmistress explained that Eric Nyarko, a former kitchen staff member, had resigned from the school, but his salary was mistakenly paid into his account despite efforts to stop the payment.

According to her, she had declined to validate his salary for that particular month and had also written to the bank to place an embargo on the payment. However, the bank allegedly failed to act in time, resulting in the salary being processed into his account.

She told the committee that after contacting him, he returned to the school but allegedly refused to refund the money, arguing that he had worked for the government for more than five years without receiving salary payments during that period.

The headmistress indicated that the former employee insisted he would not refund the money unless the government first settled the salary arrears he claimed were owed to him from his early years of service.

She, however, maintained before the committee that there were established procedures for addressing salary grievances and argued that the former employee could not justify keeping money he was not entitled to after leaving the institution.

According to her account, she subsequently contacted the police commander to intervene in the matter, leading to the recovery of the money after the former staff member allegedly sold his cow to make the payment.

The headmistress also addressed the case involving Emmanuel Obiri, a former teacher who allegedly continued to receive salary payments after leaving the school.

She explained that the teacher had remained around the school after vacations to complete academic reports and related duties, creating the impression that he was still actively at his post during the validation period for salaries.

According to her, he had completed the marking of examination scripts and submitted reports in September after the school vacated in August, which informed the decision to validate his salary for that period.

However, when the school resumed in October, and he failed to report back, further checks allegedly revealed that he had already left before reopening.

The headmistress told the committee that while the former teacher legitimately deserved payment for August because he had worked up to August 24, he was not entitled to the September salary he received.

She explained that she instructed the school accountant to trace him, eventually leading them to his father-in-law, through whom contact was established.

According to her, the former teacher later admitted that the money was in his account abroad and initially claimed he could not access it to make repayment.

The headmistress, however, stated that she eventually managed to retrieve the funds through what she described as her own efforts and persistence.

During the hearing, committee members and observers reacted to the dramatic narration, with references also made to the nickname “Woman King,” which she disclosed had been given to her by students due to her strict leadership style.

The proceedings further sparked discussions on whether public sector employees who receive unearned salaries are required to refund the gross amount or only the net salary received after deductions.

The accident occurred at about 7:10 p.m.

One of the vehicles, an Opel taxi with registration number GT 9533-W, was travelling from Wenchi to Amponsahkrom with only the driver on board.

The driver, identified as 52-year-old Moro Sule, popularly known as “VA,” sustained severe injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at about 8:09 p.m.

Dr. Matilda Amissah, acting as administratrix of her brother’s estate, is seeking GH¢20 million in general damages at the High Court in Accra.

The case relates to a February 2026 incident that reignited public concerns over Ghana’s recurring “No Bed Syndrome” in emergency healthcare delivery.

Named in the writ are the Ghana Police Hospital, the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, several doctors and nurses, as well as the Attorney General’s Department.

According to court documents, the deceased, a 29-year-old Electronic and Automation Engineer with Promasidor Ghana Limited, was involved in a hit-and-run accident on the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Overpass on February 6, 2026.

The statement of claim alleges that although he was taken to several health facilities for treatment, he was denied immediate emergency care due to claims of unavailability of beds.

It further states that he was later pronounced dead at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after suffering cardiac arrest. Post-mortem findings reportedly indicated severe blood loss, fractures, and trauma-related complications.

Dr. Amissah is also relying on findings from a government-appointed committee chaired by Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, which reportedly concluded that lapses in emergency response at the hospitals contributed to the death.

The defendants have been directed to respond to the writ within eight days or risk judgment being entered against them in default.

Abandoned Agenda 111 hospital site at Kasoa becomes haven for criminals https://www.adomonline.com/abandoned-agenda-111-hospital-site-at-kasoa-becomes-haven-for-criminals/ Wed, 20 May 2026 19:10:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2664204 An uncompleted Agenda 111 project in the Awutu Senya East Municipality has been taken over by criminals and squatters after the contractor abandoned the site following the 2024 general elections, leaving residents increasingly vulnerable and without the healthcare facility they were promised.

The project, located at Jei River, a suburb of Kasoa Ofaakor in the Central Region, is estimated to be approximately 41 percent complete. Construction began in 2023 — two years behind the original 2021 schedule — due to land disputes, but work came to a halt shortly after the elections.

Residents say the abandoned site has since become a hideout for criminals and a habitat for wild animals. They add that attacks on community members, including senior high school students, have become a worrying pattern — made worse by the fact that the facility sits close to the Municipal Assembly.

The need for the hospital is acute. Kasoa has a population of over 236,000, according to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, but is served by only one polyclinic and a mother and child hospital. Many residents currently travel as far as Winneba and Weija-Gbawe to access medical care, a burden they say the completed facility would have significantly reduced.

Residents are appealing to President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister of Health to intervene and ensure the contractor returns to the site to complete the project.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the exercise, Major General Gbetanu expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the soldier as a dedicated and committed officer who died in the line of duty. He extended his condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, and the Ghana Armed Forces as a whole.

He emphasised the importance of the exercise in enhancing national security, particularly in border communities vulnerable to violent extremism and terrorism-related threats. Firefighters from the Anfoega Fire Station responded swiftly to the scene following the incident.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service, emergency responders immediately shut down the tanker’s engine upon arrival to eliminate any possible source of ignition.

Firefighters also applied foam concentrate to cool the tanker and contain the situation, successfully preventing what could have resulted in an explosion.

Although the tanker sustained extensive damage to both the head compartment and bulk tank, no fire outbreak or casualties were recorded.

The cause of the accident is yet to be officially disclosed.

‘I’m now surviving on one kidney and a metal-adjusted liver’ – Ghanaian Russian recruit cries out https://www.adomonline.com/im-now-surviving-on-one-kidney-and-a-metal-adjusted-liver-ghanaian-russian-recruit-cries-out/ Wed, 20 May 2026 12:11:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2663958 He never bargained to fight in the Russia–Ukraine war, but a pursuit of better economic opportunities sold to him by a travelling agent has left him with scars he may never recover from.

Maxwell Aidoo, a 25-year-old native of the Central Region, now relies on one kidney and a liver adjusted with metal after a drone manned by Ukrainian soldiers attacked him.

His story is a reflection of the deep role travel agents and social media platforms are playing in leading unsuspecting Ghanaians to the frontlines.

Maxwell says he is the only survivor of his battalion on that fateful day when he stepped on a landmine and was spotted by drones.

Speaking to JoyNews, he explained that his misfortune began when he was transferred from the tank battalion to the assault battalion.

The returnee combatant recounted that when he signed the contract qualifying him as a Russian soldier, he was given an empty bullet casing on which his name was inscribed.

“These bullet casings are what enable the command unit to identify your remains when you are killed on the frontline.”

He revealed that the army deploys soldiers to the frontlines for three months, and if you are fortunate to survive, “they assign you one month of rest before you return to the battlefield.”

Maxwell (front middle) with other Russian army fighters (Source: JoyNews Investigations)

He recalled that it was even perilous getting to their duty post near the Ukrainian border.

“By the time we completed the five-day journey to where we had been assigned, almost half of the battalion had lost their lives. You are either killed by a landmine, an explosion, or you are shot.”

He stated that on the frontline, their tasks included monitoring enemy activity, noting the direction of missiles fired, and delivering food to other soldiers via drones.

“This is because the assault on the Ukrainians is a 24-hour operation. You are only given one hour to rest, which is woefully inadequate. Every hour, you need to alert your commander that you are alive. You are not permitted to oversleep because you risk being ambushed.”

Maxwell said he struggled to sleep while on the battlefield because, aside from the need to remain vigilant, everywhere he looked, he saw dead bodies.

His worst moment occurred on the second day at the frontline. He had been sent to replace someone, but accidentally stepped on a landmine.

“When it exploded, the blast threw me against a tree. However, this alerted a nearby Ukrainian unit, and they targeted my battalion. I believe my actions led to their deaths,” he lamented.

The grief-stricken 25-year-old said when he regained consciousness, it became a struggle for survival as drones trailed him, aiming to kill him.

His injuries to his kidney and liver occurred when one of the drones attacked, but he managed to save his life by crawling into a nearby bunker and administering first aid to himself.

“I sealed the perforated veins and bandaged my stomach. That was what we were taught to do during training if we ever got injured.”

The ensuing moments were more torturous than he had imagined. After waiting three hours for evacuation with no help in sight, he began a three-day journey to a Russian safe zone with no food and limited medical supplies.

“My food had been destroyed. When I became thirsty, I ate snow and sand while pushing toward the safe line. All I thought about was survival. I believe being alive today is by grace.”

Maxwell said he was spotted after the third day. He collapsed a few meters from the safe zone and was stabilised at a Moscow military hospital after spending several days in a coma.

“I am depending on one kidney, and I am surviving on a liver adjusted with metal. I am now mindful of what I eat,” he indicated.

Meanwhile, the Ghanaian agent who once helped him travel to Russia allegedly swindled him of his compensation while he was making frantic efforts to return to Ghana.

He explained that because he joined the Russian army illegally, he feared he would not be able to leave the country since he had not completed his contract.

Recounting how he ended up fighting in what Russia describes as a “special military operation,” the 25-year-old said it began through a travelling agent he met in Dubai.

“The agent called me one day and said he had secured a well-paying job opportunity for me. He told me I would act as an assistant helping military personnel with various tasks. I was not told I would be fighting in the war,” he recounted.

According to him, although the cost of his flight was covered, he was detained for about four hours at a Russian airport to ensure he was not a spy.

He stated that three Ghanaians embarked on the journey and were hosted by a man of Russian descent with a military background in a hostel-like apartment.

“We drove for four hours to a military warehouse. We spent two weeks there, and during that period, they took us to a military medical base for examinations. That was when I started panicking,” he said.

Maxwell claimed there was also a Ghanaian intermediary whose job was to scout recruits from different countries to join the Russian army, earning $1,000 for each person enlisted.

According to him, their initial belief that they were being recruited as batmen (assistants to military officers) was shattered when they were woken up one dawn and made to sign contracts.

He explained that the contracts were in Russian, and they were pressured to sign them.

“We were sent to a camp where we met 51 other African nationals—Zambians, South Africans, Nigerians, among others. We were congratulated and told we had joined the army. It was a shock.”

He said that when he attempted to back out, the Ghanaian agent threatened that he would have to reimburse the cost of the visa and flight tickets paid by the Russian military committee.

The returnee added that he was stranded at that point because he lacked the resources to pay those fees and had to accept his fate.

“They threatened us to join. We couldn’t refuse because we feared we would be shot.”

He explained that they were given military accoutrements and transported to the Ukrainian border.

“We just had to obey everything we were told, despite panicking.”

He stated that they were trained for three weeks on how to handle explosives, use weapons, and read maps for missions.

Maxwell claimed he was fortunate during his first deployment.

“I was deployed to the tank battalion to destroy villages before the ground assault began.”

However, that mission summed up his regrets on the frontline.

“You fight on all fronts. You are battling landmines, long-distance missiles, drones, and gunfire. It isn’t easy.”

Here is what Ghanaians being evacuated from South Africa are going to receive from government https://www.adomonline.com/here-is-what-ghanaians-being-evacuated-from-south-africa-are-going-to-receive-from-government/ Wed, 20 May 2026 09:20:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2663916 The Government of Ghana has announced a comprehensive support package for Ghanaians being evacuated from South Africa amid ongoing xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in the country.

A public notice issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reveals the government has outlined five key benefits that all evacuated citizens will be entitled to upon their return home.

Returnees will receive a Welcome Home Financial Package to help cushion the immediate economic impact of their displacement. The government will also provide transportation assistance to ensure that evacuees can travel safely to their destinations across Ghana upon arrival.

To help returning citizens rebuild their lives, the package further includes a Re-integration Allowance, as well as free psychosocial support to address the emotional and mental health toll of the traumatic experiences many may have endured.

Additionally, evacuees will be enrolled on a special database for jobs and startup opportunities, giving them access to employment and entrepreneurship prospects as they work to re-establish themselves back home.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the welfare of all Ghanaians, stating: “We value and cherish all our citizens.”

The first batch of 300 Ghanians is expected to be evacuated from South Africa through a special chartered flight scheduled for Thursday, May 21.

Xenophobia in South Africa is not a new phenomenon. For years, the country has grappled with intermittent but widespread xenophobic violence against African and Asian foreign nationals, whether refugees, asylum seekers, or documented and undocumented migrants.

The recent xenophobic attacks, which began in April, stem from the country’s worsening economic conditions, including an unemployment rate of over 43 percent, which has driven anti-immigrant sentiment and empowered vigilante groups.

Two movements — March and March, led by Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, and Operation Dudula, fronted by Zandile Dabula — have been organising city-by-city marches against foreign nationals.

Between April and May, violent demonstrations have erupted in Pretoria, Johannesburg, and Durban, with sometimes fatal consequences.

The party members accuse the DCE of neglecting communities in NDC strongholds, particularly in relation to poor road conditions and what they describe as the exclusion of party executives from key decisions and development planning.

At a press conference, the Fanteakwa North Constituency Chairman, John Amoafo, raised concerns over what he described as worsening infrastructure and sanitation challenges in the area.

According to him, the poor state of roads has made movement difficult for residents and continues to affect local economic activities. He further alleged that party executives are often sidelined in decision-making processes, including issues relating to development projects.

He also raised concerns over the siting of the proposed 27-hour economy market, saying the decision has caused dissatisfaction among local chiefs and party members.

On the other hand, the District Chief Executive for Fanteakwa North, Osman Abubakar, has dismissed the allegations, insisting that he engages all relevant stakeholders before taking decisions.

He explained that the location for the proposed 27-hour economy market was revised by project consultants due to concerns about accessibility and poor telecommunications coverage in the original area.

Mr. Abubakar urged party members to remain calm, assuring them of his commitment to the development of the district.

He made the remarks on Tuesday, May 19, when the Mobile Money Advocacy Group Ghana presented him with a plaque and citation in recognition of his contribution to crime fighting.

According to the IGP, victims of robbery attacks should cooperate with criminals and hand over whatever items are demanded in order to protect their lives.

“All that we are saying is that to Ghanaians in general, if you are attacked by any criminal, whatever they want from you, just give it out to them. We don’t want anybody to struggle with any criminal when the person confronts you anywhere.

“If it is your mobile phone he wants to take from you, let him take it. If it is your laptop he wants to take, let him take it. If it is your money he wants to take, your life is more precious than these petty-petty items,” he said.

The IGP further assured the public that security agencies remain committed to tracking and arresting perpetrators of violent crimes.

“If you are driving your car and the criminal says he wants it, give it out to him. Let him know that he can take these things but he cannot hide. Security will come after that person,” he stated.

Mr. Yohuno reiterated the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to investigating unresolved crimes and ensuring offenders are brought to justice, stressing that the protection of lives remains the Service’s top priority.

Chief accused of selling land for galamsey in Asawinso after deadly clash that claimed one life and left several injured https://www.adomonline.com/chief-accused-of-selling-land-for-galamsey-in-asawinso-after-deadly-clash-that-claimed-one-life-and-left-several-injured/ Tue, 19 May 2026 11:19:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2663549 The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai in the Western Region, Sebastian Obeng, has raised serious concerns over the involvement of some local actors in illegal mining activities following a deadly clash at Asawinso that claimed one life and left several others injured.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Obeng alleged that the land at the centre of the violence was originally sold for illegal mining purposes, deepening tensions in the area.

According to him, the Adontenhene for Ntakam, Nana Ayensu, who resides in Beposo, is believed to have sold the land to a man known as Obidi for galamsey operations.

“He is a chief at Ntakam but stays in Beposo. He sold the land to Obidi for galamsey and not for farming. He also came to the site to engage the Asawinso chief and pleaded with him that they go home and resolve the matter,” Mr. Obeng stated.

He explained that the situation escalated when the Asawinso Chief intervened to stop mining activities on the site, leading to confrontations involving rival groups and traditional authorities.

“The illegal miners on site at the time also called the owner, Obidi, to inform him that the Asawinso chief had invaded the site to stop their operations. Obidi then called some thugs led by Afoko and Baako Bewu, who ambushed and attacked the people,” he explained.

Mr. Obeng expressed concern over the growing influence of individuals he described as “untouchable” within illegal mining spaces, warning that such actions undermine law enforcement and community safety.

“Galamsey is a bane in the area, so we appealed to the traditional authorities to help us fight the menace. But look at this situation — a chief selling land for galamsey. The miners will feel nobody can interfere with their operations,” he said.

He assured that authorities will visit the site while police continue investigations and pursue other accomplices linked to the violence.

Bibiani-Asawinso: Galamsey site owner arrested after violent clash that claimed man’s life https://www.adomonline.com/bibiani-asawinso-galamsey-site-owner-arrested-after-violent-clash-that-claimed-mans-life/ Tue, 19 May 2026 11:12:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2663603 The Municipal Chief Executive for Bibiani, Sebastian Obeng, has confirmed the arrest of a key suspect following a violent confrontation at a galamsey site at Asawinso in the Western North Region, which left one person dead and several others injured on Monday.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Obeng explained that the incident escalated after traditional authorities and security personnel moved in to halt illegal mining activities at the site.

According to him, the Asawinso Chief led an intervention after receiving reports of illegal mining in the area, a situation that quickly spiralled out of control.

“So I called the Police Commander to alert him and also deploy personnel, and they did. Illegal miners have been a thorn in our flesh,” he said.

Mr. Obeng stated that tensions rose when a man identified as Obidi, who is linked to the site, allegedly called other individuals to the scene after being informed of the chief’s intervention.

He said the situation worsened when a group of armed men stormed the area and began firing indiscriminately.

“So when the chief heard that people were doing galamsey, he moved in with some people because he has vowed that he will not allow galamsey in the area,” he narrated.

“He also called thugs whose leaders have been identified as Afoko and Baako Bewu. They invaded the site and started shooting indiscriminately,” he added.

The violence left one person dead and about seven others injured, while several others fled for safety.

Mr. Obeng further confirmed that Obidi was later arrested after reporting to the police station with a firearm, allegedly under the impression that authorities were not aware of the incident.

“Obidi went to the police station with a gun to report that there had been a robbery at his mining site, thinking the police were not aware of what had happened, which led to his arrest,” he said.

Police have since launched a manhunt for other suspects linked to the attack.

I can’t in good conscience respect a Judge who has no respect for the law – Afenyo-Markin replies GBA https://www.adomonline.com/i-cant-in-good-conscience-respect-a-judge-who-has-no-respect-for-the-law-afenyo-markin-replies-gba/ Tue, 19 May 2026 09:20:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2663532 Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has defended his criticism of a Circuit Court judge, insisting that his remarks were both ethical and grounded in his constitutional rights as a Member of Parliament.

His comments come in response to concerns raised by the Ghana Bar Association over recent public statements questioning the conduct of a Circuit Court 9 judge in politically sensitive cases.

GBA spokesperson Saviour Kudze had said the Minority Leader’s conduct fell short of what is expected of someone of his legal standing, describing his actions as unethical and unprofessional.

Mr. Kudze argued that if the Minority Leader had issues with the judge’s rulings, the appropriate channel was the appellate system rather than public criticism.

In a strongly worded Facebook post, the Minority Leader maintained that speaking out against judicial conduct does not amount to a personal attack, but rather a duty to protect justice and the rights of citizens.

“It is both ethical and within my constitutional rights to call out a judge who has no respect for the law and the rights of citizens,” he stated.

He alleged that there is a worrying pattern in how the Circuit Court 9 judge handles political cases that come before him.

“There is a pattern in the conduct of the Circuit Court 9 judge in political cases that come before him,” he wrote.

Afenyo-Markin stressed that his concerns are rooted in principle and conscience, not personal grievance.

“I cannot, in good conscience, respect a judge who has no respect for the law,” he added.

The Minority Leader further indicated that the Minority Caucus in Parliament would not remain silent on the matter, hinting at possible parliamentary action.

“The Minority Caucus in Parliament will not shut its eyes to the conduct of this judge. A series of actions will be taken in Parliament and the appropriate constitutional steps will be taken to rebuke him,” he stated.

He also pushed back against interpretations that his comments were an attack on the judiciary, arguing that accountability is not the same as disrespect.

“Questioning the excesses of a judge’s pattern of conduct does not amount to an attack on his person,” he explained.

Afenyo-Markin also urged the Chief Justice to take an active interest in the matter, calling for oversight of the judge’s conduct.

“The Chief Justice must keep an eye on the Circuit Court 9 judge and prevail upon him to uphold the ethos of his judicial robe and wig,” he added.

Mahama was the biggest obstacle to Ibrahim’s Damang Mine bid – Kwakye Ofosu https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-was-the-biggest-obstacle-to-ibrahims-damang-mine-bid-kwakye-ofosu/ Tue, 19 May 2026 06:32:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2663434 Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has rejected claims that President John Mahama influenced the process leading to the award of the Damang Mine lease to Engineers & Planners.

The Abura Asebu-Kwamankese MP insists the President became “the biggest stumbling block” to the bid.

Speaking on PM Express on Monday with host Evans Mensah, Mr Kwakye Ofosu said the President deliberately stayed away from Cabinet discussions on the matter because of his brother, Ibrahim Mahama’s, involvement.

“On the contrary, I will argue that the biggest obstacle to E&P taking that mine was the President,” he said.

According to him, the Lands and Natural Resources Minister first informed Cabinet that the Damang mining lease was expiring and that a decision had been taken not to renew it.

“At the Cabinet meeting that considered that particular matter of the Damang mining lease, the President recused himself. He did not sit in that meeting,” he said.

When host Evans Mensah asked why the President stepped aside, Mr Kwakye Ofosu replied: “Because he believed that it was an ethical thing to do, because we did not want the situation where it would appear that he was superintending the decision-making involving an entity that his brother had an interest in.”

He said the Vice President chaired the meeting in Mahama’s absence.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu also disclosed that Cabinet insisted on a competitive process for the lease instead of a direct allocation.

“I think we will struggle to find an instance where a competitive process has been used to award the lease of a mining concession in Ghana,” he said.

“When the minister came, the Cabinet records will show that the Cabinet insisted that a competitive process be used to select which company gets it.”

He maintained that Mahama repeatedly recused himself anytime the issue surfaced before Cabinet and stressed that the President was bound by Cabinet decisions.

“The President was not part of the decision-making and did not stampede the process,” he said.

He argued that government could easily have handed the concession directly to Engineers & Planners, but chose not to.

“We could simply have handed over to E&P without any competitive process, but Cabinet insisted that the competitive process be used,” he stated.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu said the committee responsible for the process publicly accounted for its work and explained why some companies succeeded while others failed.

He added that Parliament would still have the opportunity to scrutinise the lease agreement during ratification.

Defending the President further, he said Cabinet ministers freely expressed opposing views during deliberations.

“The debate at Cabinet that day was rigorous. People voiced their views frankly, without fear or favour,” he said.

“There was no rubber-stamp decision at that place.”

He concluded: “If you say that the President handed over to his brother, I would even agree that the President was the biggest stumbling block to E&P’s acquisition of the Damang Mine.”

One shot dead, chief and others sustain injuries in violent clash at Bibiani Anhwiaso galamsey site https://www.adomonline.com/one-shot-dead-chief-and-others-sustain-injuries-in-violent-clash-at-bibiani-anhwiaso-galamsey-site/ Mon, 18 May 2026 19:19:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2663335 A 36-year-old man has been shot dead while a chief and six others sustained gunshot injuries following a violent confrontation linked to illegal mining activities at Asawinso in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality.

The deceased, identified as Kwame Ayisi, was reportedly among a group led by the chief of Sefwi Asawinso “A”, Nana Kwasi Ayim II, who had visited the Afao Hill Forest Reserve over growing concerns about illegal mining activities in the area.

According to eyewitness accounts, the chief and some youth from the community had gone to the forest enclave to assess the extent of destruction allegedly caused by galamsey operators.

An eyewitness, Kwame Awudu, said the chief engaged the miners in what he described as a calm discussion, appealing to them to stop their activities in the forest reserve.

However, tragedy struck while the group was returning from the site when they were allegedly ambushed by heavily built men believed to be linked to the illegal miners.

The armed men reportedly opened fire on the group, leaving several people critically injured.

The victims were rushed to the Anhwiaso Community Hospital for treatment, while the chief and six others are currently receiving medical care for gunshot wounds.

The Assembly Member for the Asawinso “A” Electoral Area, Frank Nelson Ackah, confirmed the incident and described the attack as shocking and disturbing.

The incident has heightened tension in the community, with residents calling for urgent security intervention to clamp down on illegal mining activities and restore calm in the area.

Wedding items destroyed as fire guts four houses in Krachi East https://www.adomonline.com/wedding-items-destroyed-as-fire-guts-four-houses-in-krachi-east/ Mon, 18 May 2026 19:04:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2663279 A devastating fire outbreak has destroyed four houses at the Fulani community of Kparekpare Abongo in the Krachi East Municipality, leaving several families displaced and destroying properties, including a wedding trousseau prepared for an upcoming marriage ceremony.

The fire, which occurred on Sunday evening, was reportedly intensified by strong winds that spread flames from an open firewood fire through the community.

Residents said the flames spread rapidly due to the windy conditions, making it difficult to contain the fire before it engulfed several structures and valuable belongings.

Affected families lost personal items, household property and other valuables in the incident, while a wedding trousseau prepared for an upcoming marriage ceremony was also destroyed.

The incident has left many residents displaced as the affected families begin assessing the extent of the damage and seek support to rebuild their lives.

When Adom News visited the area, the affected houses had been reduced to ashes, with burnt household items scattered across the compound as residents struggled to salvage what remained.

Women, children and other residents were seen standing around the charred debris, visibly devastated by the destruction.

Residents said the blaze consumed clothing, mattresses, cooking utensils, bags and several personal belongings accumulated over the years.

Among the items destroyed was a wedding trousseau prepared for a forthcoming marriage ceremony, deepening the pain of affected families.

Some victims, including Jemila Isah and Khadija Sani, appealed for urgent assistance, calling on authorities, philanthropists and benevolent organisations to support them with relief items and shelter.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Bello explained that many of the men in the community were away grazing cattle when the fire broke out, making it difficult to control the flames in time.

He described the destruction as extensive and joined calls for immediate intervention from relevant agencies to support affected residents.

He is one of your own; take charge – Parliament told over detention of Asante Akyem North MP https://www.adomonline.com/he-is-one-of-your-own-take-charge-parliament-told-over-detention-of-asante-akyem-north-mp/ Mon, 18 May 2026 12:18:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2663180 International diplomatic consultant, Farouk Al-Wahab, has argued that the arrest of Asante Akyem North Member of Parliament (MP), Ohene Kwame Frimpong, raises serious constitutional and diplomatic questions that place Parliament at the centre of the issue.

Speaking in an interview on Adom TV’s Badwam, he insisted that Parliament, as the institution that embodies the sovereignty of the Ghanaian people, cannot be treated as a secondary actor in matters involving one of its own members.

“In this matter, it is Parliament that is involved because the detainee is their member. The government stands on its own, but Parliament also stands as a sovereign institution within the Republic,” he said.

Al-Wahab stressed that while law enforcement and international cooperation are important, the handling of the case must reflect Ghana’s constitutional structure.

“Parliament makes laws for the Executive. In this regard, when a Member of Parliament is involved, it is one of their own. Parliament is not just another agency, it represents the sovereignty of Ghana,” he argued.

He further questioned public interpretations surrounding the circumstances of the arrest, particularly claims of an Interpol “Red Notice” or global security alert. According to him, available information suggests otherwise.

“People are talking about FBI Red Alert and Interpol Red Notice. That is not correct. What we are seeing is a bench warrant from a United States District Court, transmitted through legal channels,” he explained.

Al-Wahab also noted that international arrests often follow structured airline and border security procedures, rather than sensationalised narratives.

He referenced the transit route through Amsterdam, explaining that such stops are common in international travel and do not necessarily indicate a coordinated global security operation.

“At Schiphol Airport, profiling is done by airline-appointed systems and international databases. That is standard procedure, it is not evidence of a worldwide manhunt,” he said.

On the question of diplomatic response, he argued that Parliament should have immediately engaged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ghana’s diplomatic missions abroad.

“If a sitting MP is arrested, Parliament should call in the Foreign Minister and activate the diplomatic corps. This is not a small matter,” he stated.

He also raised broader concerns about how international legal requests are processed, particularly those originating from U.S. district courts.

“In most of these cases, it is not Interpol-driven. It is a legal request from a district court, processed through mutual agreements. It is not automatic global policing,” he added.

Al-Wahab concluded by urging caution in public discourse, warning that misinterpretations of international legal processes can inflame tensions and mislead citizens.

“The world has protocols. We must understand them before we conclude. This is not just a legal matter, it is also a matter of sovereignty and diplomacy,” he said.

The comments come amid growing public debate over the arrest of Mr. Frimpong, who is serving his first term and its implications for Ghana’s parliamentary and diplomatic processes.

GNMTA flags posting delays and allowance backlog as threat to Nursing-Midwifery pipeline https://www.adomonline.com/gnmta-flags-posting-delays-and-allowance-backlog-as-threat-to-nursing-midwifery-pipeline/ Mon, 18 May 2026 12:10:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2663185 The Ghana Nurse-Midwife Trainees’ Association says prolonged delays in the posting of graduate nurses and midwives are weakening students’ confidence and threatening the future supply of health professionals in Ghana.

According to the association, many graduates remain unemployed for months after completing their training, leaving current students uncertain about whether their years of study will lead to immediate employment opportunities.

Speaking on the sidelines of the second edition of the ASHBA Inter-College Quiz Competition, the President of the Ashanti-Bono-Ahafo Zone of GNMTA, Abankwa Takyiakwa, said the prolonged wait after graduation is creating uncertainty and discouraging trainees.

He stressed that timely postings are essential to maintaining interest in nursing and midwifery programmes and addressing staffing shortages in healthcare facilities.

“The delay in postings is reducing students’ confidence in the health sector. When graduates are left without postings for long periods, it sends the wrong signal to those currently in training,” he said.

“We are calling on the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance to expedite the posting process and provide clear timelines for graduates awaiting deployment,” he added.

Mr. Takyiakwa also raised concerns over unpaid trainee allowances, indicating that only a limited number of students have received theirs while many remain unpaid.

According to him, the situation is placing significant financial pressure on trainees and forcing many to depend heavily on family support.

“Statistically, most students have not received their allowances, so we are urging the Ministry of Health and the government to conduct checks at the Controller level to ensure all trainees receive their payments,” he stated.

“Also, those who completed in 2025 are still owed two months of allowances by the government,” he added.

He noted that resolving the concerns surrounding postings and allowances would reassure trainees that their education and commitment to the health sector would be matched with opportunities and support after graduation.

Meanwhile, Holy Family Nursing and Midwifery Training College emerged winners of the 2026 ASHBA Inter-College Quiz Competition after defeating Kwapong Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Tepa Nursing and Midwifery Training College, and SDA Kwadaso Nursing and Midwifery Training College.

The Head of Holy Family Nursing and Midwifery Training College and coach of the institution’s quiz team, Shadrack Owusu Osei, attributed the victory to the students’ discipline, preparation, and determination throughout the competition.

With back-to-back titles secured, he said the team is now focused on winning a third consecutive title.

Beyond celebrating the achievement, he appealed to the government to invest in the institution’s infrastructure, explaining that improved facilities would strengthen teaching, practical training, and overall student performance.

Also speaking at the event, the Coordinating Secretary of the Bono and Ahafo chapter and Chair of the Quiz Competition Committee, Osei Solomon Mensah, explained that the annual competition is designed to promote academic excellence, critical thinking, and collaboration among nursing and midwifery trainees.

He disclosed that the event is currently funded solely through student contributions and appealed to the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders for support.

“In fact, organising the event is not easy financially. We are appealing to the government through the Ministry of Health to support the competition because it contributes to training competent nurses and midwives who will save lives,” he said.

According to a statement from the Ghana Police Service in the Oti Region on May 17, 2026, the first operation involved the interception of a 66-seater MGI bus with registration number AS 248-P at a security checkpoint in Nkwanta.

A search of the vehicle uncovered 750 live J/G cartridges concealed in a black polythene bag inside three brown boxes, each containing 250 rounds of ammunition.

Police identified one of the suspects as Hudu Mahama, 53, who was serving as the driver’s mate on the bus.

According to the statement, the suspect admitted ownership of the ammunition during preliminary interrogation.

In a separate operation on the same day, a joint Police and Military team retrieved another box containing 125 AA cartridges and 125 BB cartridges after it reportedly fell from a suspect’s motorbike during a chase.

The unidentified rider, however, managed to escape with a second box of ammunition, the police added.

Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of another suspect, Christian Kwasi Alonise, 57.

The police said both suspects are currently in custody assisting with investigations, while efforts are underway to retrieve the missing ammunition and arrest the fleeing rider.

The Joint Security team reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the area and assured the public that operations to clamp down on illegal possession and transportation of ammunition would continue.

Akatsi: Two brothers drown in attempt to rescue sibling in abandoned quarry pit https://www.adomonline.com/akatsi-two-brothers-drown-in-attempt-to-rescue-sibling-in-abandoned-quarry-pit/ Mon, 18 May 2026 08:21:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2663072 Two brothers have drowned in an abandoned quarry pit at Live Donorkope in the Akatsi South Municipality after attempting to rescue their younger brother.

The deceased have been identified as Felix Dogbey, 18, a Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduate, and Christian Dogbey, 25, an employee of a food processing company at Asikuma.

The Akatsi South Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Daniel Gidi, told the Ghana News Agency that the incident occurred on May 15 at about 1600 hours.

He said the family, together with about nine relatives, had travelled to Live Donorkope for a funeral where their mother resides, and later visited the abandoned quarry lake for recreation without supervision from residents in the area.

Mr. Gidi said the tragedy began when the brothers’ nine-year-old sibling, Eric Dogbey, started drowning in the water-filled quarry pit.

“Felix, after realising that their brother was calling for help, decided to rescue him but ended up drowning after rescuing his younger brother,” he said.

He added that Christian, sensing danger, also entered the water in an attempt to save Felix but also drowned in the process.

Mr. Gidi disclosed that the abandoned quarry pit is estimated to be between 18 and 24 metres deep.

He said initial rescue efforts by local divers on Friday, May 15, and Saturday, May 16, proved unsuccessful.

According to him, officers from the Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC) at Sogakope–Nutekpor were later contacted to assist with rescue operations but had to suspend efforts on Saturday evening due to poor underwater visibility.

“We called for help from the Navy officers, who decided to continue with rescue operations on Sunday morning after experiencing poor visibility on Saturday evening inside the water,” he added.

The Akatsi South Municipal Chief Executive, Daniel Dagba, together with officials from NADMO and other stakeholders, visited the scene on Saturday to assess the situation.

The Assembly Member for the area, Moses Gadri, told the GNA that the deceased hailed from Akatsi Alagbokope but resided at Asikuma.

The bodies were later seen floating on Sunday morning before the arrival of the Navy officers.

Personnel from the Akatsi Police Command, who maintained order at the scene, conveyed the bodies to the St. Paul’s Hospital morgue pending autopsy.

The incident has thrown the community into shock and mourning.

Ejisu NPP executives clash over alleged interference in polling station elections https://www.adomonline.com/ejisu-npp-executives-clash-over-alleged-interference-in-polling-station-elections-2/ Mon, 18 May 2026 06:50:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2662980 Some constituency executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ejisu have reportedly clashed over alleged interference in the party’s internal electoral process ahead of the upcoming polling station elections.

The disagreement is said to centre on allegations against a regional executive representative, Kwame Owusu Bampoe, whom some constituency executives accuse of undermining the party’s electoral guidelines.

According to the aggrieved executives, the alleged actions threaten transparency, fairness and unity within the constituency as preparations intensify for the internal polls.

Ejisu Constituency Secretary, Prince Asare, alleged that the regional representative had on several occasions overridden decisions collectively taken by constituency executives.

He further claimed that some directives being enforced were allegedly backed by regional authorities despite concerns raised by the local party leadership.

The development is said to have heightened tensions within the constituency, with some executives calling for strict adherence to the party’s laid down procedures to ensure a credible and peaceful electoral process.

The NPP is expected to conduct polling station elections across the country as part of preparations for future internal and national political activities.

Ex-NAFCO boss Hanan and wife dragged back to court over alleged theft, fraud and money laundering exceeding GH¢60m https://www.adomonline.com/ex-nafco-boss-hanan-and-wife-dragged-back-to-court-over-alleged-theft-fraud-and-money-laundering-exceeding-gh%c2%a260m/ Sun, 17 May 2026 14:12:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2662862 Fresh court documents filed at the High Court in Accra have alleged a list of criminal charges against former National Food and Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) Chief Executive Officer, Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba, and his wife, Faiza Seidu Wuni, over alleged financial improprieties involving millions of Ghana cedis.

The new charge sheet, filed by the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice on May 15, 2026, levels 20 counts against the couple, including stealing, defrauding by false pretences, wilfully causing financial loss to the State, abuse of public office for profit, dishonestly receiving, and money laundering.

The latest development follows the re-arrest of Mr Aludiba and his wife by operatives of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) shortly after they were discharged by the High Court in an earlier case.

According to the court filing, prosecutors accuse the former NAFCO boss of fraudulently obtaining GH¢734,400, the cedi equivalent of US$127,500, from NAFCO in 2017 under the pretext of rent payments purportedly covering the period between May 2017 and May 2019.

The state alleges that the representation was false and constituted defrauding by false pretence contrary to Section 131 of the Criminal Offences Act.

A second charge accuses Mr Abdul-Wahab of wilfully causing financial loss to the state through the same alleged rent claim.

Further allegations relate to payments allegedly made through a private entity known as Sawtina Enterprise.

The prosecution claims that between February 2017 and February 2025, Mr Aludiba, while serving as CEO of NAFCO, allegedly diverted approximately GH¢50.8 million from the state agency under the guise of making payments to one James Tieku-Apawu, trading as Sawtina Enterprise, for foodstuff purchases.

Court documents allege that the transactions amounted to stealing and constituted abuse of public office for personal gain.

The state further alleges that the payments caused substantial financial loss to NAFCO.

In another set of allegations, prosecutors accuse the former CEO of channelling payments from NAFCO to a business allegedly owned by his wife, identified in the charge sheet as Alqarni Enterprise.

The documents allege that between September 2018 and August 2019, payments amounting to more than GH¢3.34 million were made to the enterprise for purported food supply transactions.

Prosecutors claim the transactions were fraudulent and constituted theft and abuse of office.

Faiza Seidu Wuni, named as the second accused person, is facing separate charges of defrauding by false pretence, dishonestly receiving and money laundering.

According to the charge sheet, the state alleges she falsely represented that her business had supplied food items to NAFCO, causing the company to part with more than GH¢3.34 million.

The prosecution also alleges that she knowingly received and possessed funds believed to have been obtained through unlawful means.

The money laundering charge filed under the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044), accuses her of allegedly taking possession of the funds while allegedly aware that the money had been acquired through stealing.

The case has already generated significant public and political attention following complaints by defence lawyers over the handling of the accused persons after their re-arrest.

Counsel for the former NAFCO CEO, former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame, had earlier criticised EOCO’s actions, accusing investigators of denying the accused access to lawyers and refusing bail despite existing court processes and earlier bail conditions.

Mr Dame also described the prosecution’s conduct as an abuse of prosecutorial discretion and alleged that his clients had endured what he termed “pre-trial torture and harassment”.

NAFCO, a state-owned institution established to support food security and stabilise agricultural commodity prices, has in recent years faced scrutiny over procurement practices, storage systems and financial management.

The case is expected to return to court in the coming days as prosecutors seek to formally move the new charges against the accused persons.

The deceased, identified as Madam Bawama Naya, aged 70, reportedly got trapped in the fire, which swept through a large cluster of mechanic shops in the early hours of Saturday, May 16, 2026. She was burnt to death despite rescue efforts.

At about 3:22 am, personnel from the Breman Fire Station received a distress call reporting a fire involving structures, vehicles, and spare parts within the area.

A combined team from the Breman and Komfo Anokye Fire Stations, led by Station Officer I (STNO I) Ampaabeng, was quickly dispatched to the scene.

The firefighters arrived at about 3:34 am and met a fully developed fire that had already engulfed three wooden structures, three metal containers, four vehicles, and nine DAF vehicle engines.

After over an hour of firefighting efforts, the blaze was brought under control. However, property worth millions of cedis was destroyed, and Madam Naya lost her life in the process.

Her body was handed over to officers of the Suame District Police Command for preservation and further investigation.

Three Sprinter buses, one Mercedes-Benz bus, and one Opel bus were, however, successfully salvaged from the fire.

Meanwhile, the Ghana National Fire Service has begun investigations into the cause of the fire and has urged the public, especially those within industrial and commercial areas, to strictly observe fire safety measures to prevent future incidents.

See the areas that will be affected by ECG’s planned maintenance on Sunday (May 17) https://www.adomonline.com/see-the-areas-that-will-be-affected-by-ecgs-planned-maintenance-on-sunday-may-17/ Sat, 16 May 2026 15:38:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2662739 The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has scheduled planned maintenance exercises in the Tema Region for Sunday, May 17, 2026, even as engineers continue to battle an underground cable fault that plunged several communities in the Western Region into darkness on Saturday.

According to advisories issued by the power distributor, the planned maintenance in the Tema Region will affect two separate but overlapping lists of communities, with the outage scheduled from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Affected areas include Teye Kwame, Asutsuare Junction and Township, Suncity, Manyajokpanya, Glamour Farms, Legacy Girls, Akuse, Volivo, Golden Exotics, Shine Field, Osuwem, Stone Lodge, the Commandos Military Training Camp, Twin Quarries, Derby Quarries, Inzag, Bright Cement, and surrounding areas.

A separate advisory listed the same areas with the addition of Derby Quarries, confirming the scope of the five-hour outage.

These scheduled interventions come as the ECG continues to manage the aftermath of an underground cable fault at Apowa in the Western Region on Saturday, May 16, 2026. The fault disrupted power to Apowa township, Adwoa, TUC Estate, Kejebil, and surrounding areas. Engineers were deployed to rectify the fault and restore supply.

In its public notices, the ECG extended its apologies to all affected customers, acknowledging the inconvenience caused by both the scheduled maintenance and the unplanned cable fault. The company reassured the public that engineers are working diligently to resolve all network issues while emphasising that the planned exercises are necessary to ensure the long-term robustness of the power network across the regions.
