Several injured after truck crashes into fuel tanker and taxi at Konongo Lady Diana https://www.adomonline.com/several-injured-after-truck-crashes-into-fuel-tanker-and-taxi-at-konongo-lady-diana/ Sun, 14 Jun 2026 06:23:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2672514 Several people escaped death but sustained varying degrees of injuries after a container truck collided with a fuel tanker and a taxi at Konongo Lady Diana on the Accra–Kumasi Highway.

The accident occurred on Saturday, June 13, 2026, and involved a KIA container truck, a fuel tanker and a commercial taxi.

Among those injured were the taxi driver, some passengers and the driver of the fuel tanker. The victims were rushed to Steward Hospital at Yawkwei for medical treatment.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, assisted by good Samaritans, carried out a rescue operation to free victims who were trapped in the mangled vehicles. Rescuers had to cut through parts of the taxi and the fuel tanker to extricate the injured occupants.

Fortunately, no deaths were recorded.

An eyewitness, Abdella Usman, narrated to Adom News that the KIA container truck, with registration number GN 1591-20, was travelling towards Kumasi when it reportedly suffered brake failure.

He explained that the fuel tanker was stationary on the roadside heading in the same direction, while the taxi was travelling towards Juaso when the truck crashed into both vehicles.

The impact of the collision caused extensive damage to the vehicles and temporarily disrupted traffic along the busy highway.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.

61-year-old traditional healer found brutally attacked days after going missing in Assin Kushia https://www.adomonline.com/61-year-old-traditional-healer-found-brutally-attacked-days-after-going-missing-in-assin-kushia/ Sat, 13 Jun 2026 14:05:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2672425 A community in Assin Kushia, within the Assin North District, is reeling after a missing 61-year-old man was discovered unconscious in a nearby bush on Friday, June 12, 2026, bearing signs of a violent assault.

Christian Etse Dosey, a well-known local palm wine tapper and traditional healer, had been missing for three days before searchers located him. Mr. Dosey, who has three wives and 19 children, was last seen on June 10 when he left home to deliver herbal medicine to a client.

When Mr. Dosey failed to return, his family and the local traditional authorities launched an intensive search operation. The efforts included traditional rites and public appeals to help track his whereabouts.

The search ended when Mr. Dosey was found lying in the bush in an unconscious state. He had sustained severe injuries, including: a fractured arm, multiple wounds to the neck and other bodily injuries.

Given the nature and severity of his wounds, the family and local residents strongly suspect that he was the victim of a targeted attack by unknown assailants.

Following his discovery, Mr. Dosey was initially rushed to a local clinic in Assin Kushia. He has since been referred to the St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu, where he remains under medical care.

His brother, Daniel Dosey, has publicly expressed the family’s belief that foul play was involved. The family and eyewitnesses are now urgently calling on the Ghana Police Service to launch a comprehensive investigation into the incident to ensure those responsible are identified and brought to justice.

2026 WASSCE: WAEC rules out special resit for Sekondi College students who missed Chemistry paper https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wassce-waec-rules-out-special-resit-for-sekondi-college-students-who-missed-chemistry-paper/ Sat, 13 Jun 2026 08:41:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2672363 The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has defended its decision to bar 154 Sekondi College students from sitting Thursday’s Chemistry theory and objective papers, insisting that examination regulations do not allow candidates who arrive late to enter the examination hall after the prescribed reporting time.

The explanation comes after the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of Sekondi College appealed for the affected students to be given another opportunity to write the paper. The PTA argued that the candidates were delayed by heavy rainfall and were subsequently denied entry by an external invigilator.

Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, said strict adherence to examination rules is necessary because the examination is conducted simultaneously across several countries in the West African sub-region.

According to him, maintaining uniform standards is critical to preserving the integrity and credibility of the examination process.

Mr Kapi noted that while severe weather conditions could raise legitimate concerns in some situations, preliminary information available to WAEC suggests that the affected students were already on campus before the examination began.

“The information reaching us indicates that some were at the ICT lab, some were in the classroom, some were in the dormitories; they didn’t have to travel any distance to get to the examination hall.

“And mind you, there were others who were in there already and were writing, according to the report that we received. So, obviously, something may have gone wrong to make some of them not want to get into the examination hall early enough to start the exam.”

He further indicated that WAEC would not organise a special examination for the affected students, explaining that their next opportunity to write the paper would be during another examination cycle.

“They will only have a chance to rewrite in another cycle of examination. So, for example, if we are going to conduct a NOV/DEC this year, they are at liberty to register and write,” he stated.

The incident has sparked debate among parents, students and education stakeholders, with some calling for compassion and flexibility given the circumstances surrounding the candidates’ lateness, while others argue that examination rules must be applied consistently to all candidates.

Thomas Partey denied entry to Canada, set to miss Ghana’s World Cup opener against Panama https://www.adomonline.com/thomas-partey-denied-entry-to-canada-set-to-miss-ghanas-world-cup-opener-against-panama/ Fri, 12 Jun 2026 18:43:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2672286 Thomas Partey will play no part in Ghana’s first World Cup game in Toronto as he has been denied entry to Canada.

The former Arsenal midfielder, now of Villarreal, was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault in July 2025 by London’s Metropolitan Police. In September of that year, he pleaded not guilty. He was charged with two new counts of rape in February this year, to which he pleaded not guilty in April.

Ghana are set to open their tournament at Toronto’s BMO Field against Panama on Wednesday, June 17 but it has been confirmed that Partey cannot enter Canada and therefore will not be able to feature.

Following the meeting with Panama, Ghana play England at Gillette Stadium (Boston) on June 23 before closing out Group L against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia) on June 27. Partey is eligible to feature in both games.

Partey, 32, was included in his country’s squad for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico earlier this month and arrived in Washington D.C. with team-mates on June 4. The Ghana team travelled to their training base in Rhode Island on Friday.

A FIFA statement to The Athletic said: “FIFA can confirm that player Thomas Partey will be unable to travel from Ghana’s team base camp in Boston, USA, to Canada for their first match against Panama on Wednesday, 17 June, as his visa application has been refused by the Canadian government. FIFA is not involved in the immigration processes of host countries, including the adjudication of visas. As with previous FIFA events, the host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and is admitted into the country.”

The Canadian government website outlines that, “if you have committed or been convicted of a crime, you may not be allowed into Canada.” Partey has been charged, but is awaiting trial and has not been convicted.

The Athletic have approached the Ghana Football Association and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for comment.

The IRCC previously told The Athletic in a statement prior to the tournament: “Without any signed consent form, it is not possible for IRCC to provide details regarding any individual situation.

“We can, however, state that the safety and security of Canadians is our priority as we welcome FIFA World Cup participants and visitors from around the world. That is why IRCC applies its rules consistently and without exception, regardless of nationality, profile, or role in the tournament.

“IRCC officers are trained decision makers who assess an individual’s eligibility and admissibility in accordance with Canadian immigration laws. If they believe that an individual could pose a security risk, they may decide to deny them entry.”

The seven counts of rape and one of sexual assault will be tried at Southwark Crown Court, London. The trial was originally scheduled for November, but may now be delayed until early 2027. Under the conditions of his bail, Partey is obliged to notify authorities of any plans to travel abroad.

The initial six charges, which relate to three women, are alleged to have taken place in 2021 and 2022. Detectives at the Metropolitan Police began their investigation into Partey in February 2022 when they received a report of alleged rape. The two further charges relate to a fourth woman after a separate report of non-recent offences in 2020, following a new investigation by the Met. These allegations were first reported topolice in August 2025.

Partey continued to play for Arsenal until the end of his contract, making 35 Premier League appearances in the 2024-25 season, his last at the Emirates Stadium. Partey played 32 times for Villarreal during the 2025-26 domestic season. His contract with the Spanish club expires at the end of June, though there is a one-year extension option.

Adu-Boahene trial: Witness denies claims of inter-branch fund transfers https://www.adomonline.com/adu-boahene-trial-witness-denies-claims-of-inter-branch-fund-transfers/ Fri, 12 Jun 2026 13:48:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2672206 Mildred Donkor, the third prosecution witness in the trial of Kwabena Adu-Boahene and two others, has disputed claims that UMB Bank branches independently transferred funds between themselves to satisfy withdrawal requests.

She insisted that such approvals could only come from the bank’s headquarters.

According to her, such transactions required authorisation from the bank’s headquarters.

In cross-examination led by Mr Samuel Atta-Akyea, counsel for the accused persons, the witness told the court that Mr Adu-Boahene and his wife had a special banking relationship with UMB Bank, resulting in arrangements that facilitated certain transactions.

She explained that certain transactions were undertaken because of the relationship between the customers and the bank, describing it as a practice extended to customers of a particular class.

The witness further confirmed that funds were at times transferred from BNC Communications Bureau Limited accounts to Advantage Solutions Limited accounts for transactional purposes.

She explained that when the BNC account was opened, cheque books were not immediately available, necessitating transfers through Advantage Solutions Limited to facilitate transactions.

Asked whether the movement of funds through various companies was intended to create a complex network for the benefit of the accused persons, Madam Donkor rejected the suggestion.

The witness disagreed with suggestions by the defence that she had personally withdrawn GH¢10.99 million from the BNC Operations Account through pre-signed cheques and withdrawal requests.

When further asked whether bank statements showed that she had withdrawn GH¢98.38 million from Advantage Solutions Limited and its subsidiary accounts, Madam Donkor said she could not confirm the figures.

The witness, however, maintained that she had previously testified that she kept records for reconciliation purposes and had indemnity arrangements relating to transactions undertaken on behalf of Advantage Solutions Limited and its subsidiaries.

She maintained that all transfers were carried out on the instructions of Mr Adu-Boahene and his wife, and that the requests were often described as urgent.

The witness said she was unaware of any state funds involved in the transactions and insisted she was merely performing her duties as a banker.

During proceedings, the defence tendered an email request dated February 11, 2020, relating to the BNC Operations account. The document was admitted into evidence without objection.

Mr Atta-Akyea also questioned the witness about her earlier statements concerning an alleged transfer of GH¢2.5 million to one Rashida.

The defence suggested that the claim had not formed part of her original statement to investigators at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Madam Donkor responded that the account she gave in court reflected answers she had previously provided to investigators through her lawyer during interactions.

She rejected a suggestion that the Rashad Sanny narrative had been introduced to secure favourable treatment from investigators.

The witness maintained that the account formed part of her version of events.

The case was adjourned to June 15, 2026.

Commuters stranded for hours as massive gridlock hits Ofankor–Achimota stretch https://www.adomonline.com/commuters-stranded-for-hours-as-massive-gridlock-hits-ofankor-achimota-stretch/ Fri, 12 Jun 2026 09:10:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2672025 Commuters heading into Accra on the Ofankor–Achimota Highway were left stranded for hours on Monday, June 1, 2026, after a heavy traffic build-up brought movement on the busy stretch to a near standstill.

The congestion, which stretched across both the main carriageway and outer lanes, has left motorists and passengers stuck with little to no movement for most of the morning.

Adom FM/TV Presenter, Nana Osei Ampofo Adjei, who has been caught up in the gridlock, expressed frustration on Adom FM Dwaso Nsem, attributing the situation to a deteriorated section of the highway.

“I left home at 6:00 am, and after 7:30, I am now getting to Mile 7. The situation is very terrible and will cause many people to be late today, affecting productivity at work,” he lamented.

The Ofankor–Achimota stretch, which serves thousands of daily commuters from the northern parts of Accra and surrounding communities, is known for frequent congestion, particularly during peak hours and rainy conditions.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Roads and Highways has directed the Department of Urban Roads to repair a deteriorated section of the highway urgently after preliminary assessments pointed to potholes and drainage challenges, including a silted underground system, as contributing factors to the worsening traffic situation.

Road users continue to call for lasting improvements to ease congestion along the corridor, which remains one of the capital’s most critical transport routes.

Why Chairman Wontumi chose a legal resolution in Exim Bank trial https://www.adomonline.com/why-chairman-wontumi-chose-a-legal-resolution-in-exim-bank-trial/ Fri, 12 Jun 2026 07:31:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2671969 Recent commentary surrounding the Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and his decision to enter plea negotiations with the State has sparked significant public discussion. It is therefore important to place the matter in its proper context.

The facility in question was secured to support a large-scale agricultural enterprise aimed at contributing to Ghana’s food security, employment creation, and broader agricultural development. This was neither a speculative venture nor a paper project. Chairman Wontumi’s commitment to agriculture has long been a matter of public record.

In 2018, his farming enterprise received national recognition when he was adjudged Ashanti Regional Best Farmer, First Runner-Up, during the 34th National Farmers’ Day celebration. His 10,000-acre maize farm in the Sekyere Central District was specifically cited as a major contribution to agricultural production in Ghana. The award, presented by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, affirmed the scale, seriousness, and legitimacy of the investment.

Like many agricultural ventures, however, large-scale farming is inherently exposed to operational and environmental risks. Market fluctuations, adverse climatic conditions, production setbacks, and other unforeseen challenges can significantly affect expected returns and, consequently, the ability to meet financial obligations within projected timelines.

In recognition of these realities and his responsibilities, Chairman Wontumi has chosen the path of constructive engagement and lawful resolution. His decision to enter plea negotiations reflects a commitment to the rule of law, transparency, and the efficient settlement of outstanding matters, rather than a prolonged legal confrontation.

It is important to emphasize that plea negotiations are a lawful mechanism under Ghana’s legal framework. They do not, in themselves, constitute proof of guilt or wrongdoing. The law expressly provides avenues for parties to negotiate settlements, including arrangements that may, where appropriate, result in the withdrawal of charges.

Chairman Wontumi’s decision should therefore be seen as a responsible effort to resolve a commercial and legal matter within the framework of the law, while enabling all parties to avoid unnecessary and protracted litigation.

At a time when public confidence in institutions depends on respect for due process, it is essential that legal procedures are understood for what they are and not mischaracterized for political convenience. Seeking a lawful resolution is not an act of evasion; it is an act of responsibility.

Chairman Wontumi remains committed to fulfilling his obligations, respecting the laws of Ghana, and continuing his contributions to national development, agriculture, and public service.

Responsible leadership is demonstrated not by the absence of challenges, but by the willingness to confront them transparently, lawfully, and in good faith.

Andy Appiah Kubi files motion to withdraw from Samreboi illegal mining case https://www.adomonline.com/andy-appiah-kubi-files-motion-to-withdraw-from-samreboi-illegal-mining-case/ Thu, 11 Jun 2026 19:30:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2671870 Counsel for Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, lawyer Andy Appiah Kubi has filed a motion to withdraw from the high-profile Samreboi illegal mining case.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, lawyer Appiah Kubi disclosed that he has taken steps to withdraw from the case and has already filed the necessary processes with the court.

“For Samreboi, I have filed a motion to withdraw from the case. I’m withdrawing my legal services,” he stated.

Mr Appiah Kubi, however, declined to disclose the reasons behind his decision, saying the details are contained in an affidavit filed before the court.

“My reasons are in the affidavit. We will take the motion on Monday, so I won’t discuss it,” he said.

He suggested that his affidavit contains strong concerns about the conduct of proceedings in the case.

“But I have cried in the affidavit. I pray that the court should be a court and when it takes its decision, I will discuss it,” he added.

“The case was like someone was shepherding the case. There was no breathing space. It was fast-tracked,” he claimed.

According to him, the pace of proceedings made it difficult for lawyers involved in the matter.

“If you have something to do, the judge will call you and say come immediately,” he alleged.

Mr Appiah Kubi also disclosed plans to petition the legal profession’s regulatory body over the matter.

“I will also petition the Bar Association. Will we sit for this to happen?” he questioned.

The Samreboi case involves Chairman Wontumi and two others over alleged illegal mining activities at a concession in Samreboi in the Western Region.

The case has attracted significant public and political attention, with the High Court scheduled to deliver judgment on July 3, 2026.

Wontumi seeks plea deal in GH¢30m Exim Bank fraud trial — AG notifies High Court https://www.adomonline.com/wontumi-seeks-plea-deal-in-gh%c2%a230m-exim-bank-fraud-trial-ag-notifies-high-court/ Thu, 11 Jun 2026 11:56:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2671780 The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has formally requested a plea negotiation with the Attorney-General in his ongoing criminal trial over an alleged GH¢14.3 million loan fraud involving the Ghana Export-Import Bank (Exim Bank).

The Deputy Attorney-General, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, filed a Notification of Commencement of Plea Negotiation at the Accra High Court on Thursday, June 11, 2026, under Docket No. CR/0529/2026.

According to the court document, Wontumi’s counsel, Mr. Andy Appiah-Kubi, Esq., wrote to the Attorney-General on June 5, 2026, requesting the initiation of plea negotiations in respect of the charges in the trial.

The notification was filed under Section 162C(3) of Act 30, which governs plea negotiation procedures in Ghana’s criminal justice system.

The case involves Chairman Wontumi as the first accused, Thomas Antwi-Boasiako, who remains at large as the second accused, and Wontumi Farms Limited as the third accused.

Wontumi and his co-accused face four criminal charges: defrauding by false pretence, authoring a forged document, money laundering, and intentionally causing financial loss to a public institution.

According to the charge sheet dated May 15, 2026, the accused persons allegedly secured about GH¢14.3 million from Exim Bank in 2018 under the guise of establishing a large-scale farming project.

Prosecutors claim Wontumi Farms Limited applied for a GH¢19 million loan facility, presenting documents that purported to show the company had secured a 100,000-acre parcel of land for the agricultural venture.

The prosecution alleged that one of the documents presented as a board resolution letter was dated January 23, 2018, but referred to a resolution supposedly passed on December 9, 2017 — four days before the company was officially incorporated on December 14, 2017.

The prosecution further claims that although about GH¢14.3 million was disbursed for the project, no farming activities were carried out, no machinery was purchased, and no workers were employed.

It is also alleged that a document presented as proof of purchase for farming equipment was falsified.

Count Four further alleges that Wontumi, Thomas Antwi-Boasiako, and Wontumi Farms Limited intentionally caused financial loss to the Ghana Export-Import Bank exceeding GH¢30 million in the course of the transaction, with substantial portions of the money allegedly diverted into personal use and unrelated business investments.

Chairman Wontumi pleaded not guilty to all four charges when he appeared before the court on May 18, 2026.

The matter had been adjourned to June 18, 2026, for a Case Management Conference.

This is not Wontumi’s only active criminal matter. He, Akonta Mining Limited, and company director Kwame Antwi are also before the Accra High Court in a separate trial over alleged illegal mining activities at Samreboi, with judgment scheduled for July 3, 2026.

The Attorney-General’s office has not issued any public statement beyond the court notification. Further developments in the Exim Bank case are expected when proceedings resume on June 18, 2026.

According to the Service, personnel from the Peki Fire Station responded swiftly to a distress call received at 7:41 a.m. on Tuesday, 9 June 2026, reporting a collision involving a Rhino truck with registration number GX 3516-16 and a Toyota Voxy with registration number GN 6973-25.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and successfully rescued two male victims, aged 52 and 20, from the wreckage.

The GNFS said personnel also salvaged assorted drinks and ammonium sulphate fertiliser from the accident scene to prevent any additional hazards and ensure public safety.

The victims were handed over to the appropriate authorities for further care, while efforts were made to secure the area and restore normal traffic flow.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

The Fire Service used the opportunity to urge motorists to adhere to road safety regulations and exercise caution on the roads to help reduce the incidence of traffic accidents.

Road crashes continue to be a major concern across the country, with emergency responders frequently appealing to drivers to observe speed limits and comply with traffic laws to save lives.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, she said she has been approached by several women who confide in her about challenges in their marriages and how such alternatives are helping them manage intimacy gaps.

“The number of people who come to me to talk about this issue of sex toys,” she said, adding that many of the women raising these concerns are married and seeking ways to cope when their husbands travel frequently for work.

According to her, some of the women say the use of such products helps them remain faithful in their marriages. “Those whose husbands travel for work and because they don’t want to be promiscuous,” she explained.

Nana Yaa Jantuah also noted that her initial exposure to the subject came through conversations with a woman who had to explain what sex toys were after she admitted she was unfamiliar with them.

“I have never seen one before or even know how it looks like,” she said.

She recounted that after the first explanation, she became more aware of ongoing public discussions around the topic and its growing presence in conversations about relationships and marriage.

“The first person who spoke to me, and I told her I didn’t know what it was or looked like, she described it to me and told me that it is in the law, and after that I have heard a lot of conversations about it,” she added.

She further argued that open discussions around sex and intimacy are important for strengthening relationships and preventing misinformation, especially among young people.

“And if I say saving marriages, we should also demystify the issue of sex, because if we don’t talk to our children about it at home, things about sex then they will learn on the streets,” she said.

Her comments have since generated public debate on the role of sex education and intimacy tools in modern marriages.

Forestry Commission staff attacked as mob burns timber checkpoint facility in Bono East https://www.adomonline.com/forestry-commission-staff-attacked-as-mob-burns-timber-checkpoint-facility-in-bono-east/ Thu, 11 Jun 2026 06:35:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2671602 The Forestry Commission has condemned what it describes as a violent attack on its personnel and the destruction of a newly constructed accommodation facility for timber checkpoint staff at Babatokuma near Kintampo in the Bono East Region.

According to the Commission, the incident occurred on Tuesday, June 9, at about 3:30 p.m., when an irate mob stormed the facility, assaulted officers on duty, vandalised the structure and set it ablaze.

The accommodation had been built to house personnel deployed to strengthen the monitoring of timber transportation and help curb the illegal movement of timber and timber products to neighbouring countries.

The Commission said information available to it indicates that the attackers claimed the operations of the checkpoint threatened their timber business interests in the area.

Officers on duty sustained injuries during the attack and were taken to the Kintampo Government Hospital for treatment. The incident has since been reported to the Kintampo Divisional Police Command.

The Forestry Commission said it is working closely with the Police and other security agencies to identify and arrest the perpetrators, some of whom were captured on video during the attack.

Describing the incident as “an affront to State authority,” the Commission warned that such acts undermine efforts to protect Ghana’s forest resources. It also expressed concern over what it called a growing culture of impunity, noting that similar attacks on Forestry Commission personnel and facilities have occurred in the past.

The Commission cautioned that continued disregard for forest laws and regulations could have serious ecological and socio-economic consequences for the country.

It therefore called on security agencies, traditional authorities, civil society groups, the media and the general public to support efforts to tackle illegal activities in the forestry sector.

The Forestry Commission reiterated its commitment to protecting, developing and sustainably managing Ghana’s forest and wildlife resources for present and future generations.

Ghana International Bank CEO sacked, new CEO named https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-international-bank-ceo-sacked-new-ceo-named/ Thu, 11 Jun 2026 06:25:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2671596 UK-based Ghana International Bank “GhIB”, has had its Chief Executive Officer, Dean Adansi, relieved of his duties.

The GhIB Board, controlled by the Government of Ghana through the Bank of Ghana, told him only last Sunday that his services were no longer needed. An official announcement to staff followed the next day.

While the Board frames his dismissal as Adansi having ‘assumed leave’, his replacement- Ian Owulakwao Greenstreet, an investment banker and international expert in financial risk management, has already been named and welcomed to the post.

Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr Johnson Asiama who chairs the GhIB Board, in official communications announcing the new CEO, noted how delighted he was “that Ian Greenstreet has agreed to become Chief Executive Officer of Ghana International Bank,” subject to regulatory approval.

The official communication was silent on the outgoing CEO who served in the capacity for about seven-and-a-half years.

GhIB was established in 1959 as the London branch of Ghana Commercial Bank, two years after Ghana’s independence.

Bank of Ghana holds more than 50% of shares, with the balance held by Ghanaian financial institutions, including GCB Bank, SSNIT, and ADB.

The bank was once on the brink of failure and placed on a regulatory watchlist by UK authorities in 2016.

Adansi, appointed CEO in 2019 and approved by the UK Prudential Regulation Authority “PRA” and Financial Conduct Authority “FCA” as Chief Executive under the Senior Managers & Certification Regime “SMCR”, emailed senior staff confirming his immediate and sudden departure and referencing what appears to be a shocking turnaround.

In his parting note, seen by Myjoyonline, Adansi highlighted GhIB’s turnaround under his tenure.

“We grew trade revenues by over 300% and maintained a clean loan book with a strong LCR and CAR. We reached our goal of $100 million in revenues in five years and we’re looking forward to doubling the size of the business in another five years – while managing our modest capital closely.”

He also praised frontline staff “who have led us to the point of recovery” and said the board had approved a strategy focused on non-interest income, funding diversification and modernisation.

Questions over PRA and FCA compliance
Questions have been raised within governance and regulatory circles about whether the transition aligns with procedural requirements under the UK’s PRA/FCA Senior Managers Regime, which governs the appointment and departure of senior banking executives.

The rules require formal notifications and regulatory approvals for changes to senior management functions.

As at 4:30 am Thursday, June 11, 2026, the bank’s website still listed Mr Adansi as the CEO of GhIB, suggesting that formal filings were yet to be updated.

The bank has, in recent years, undergone regulatory remediation processes, including a period of voluntary business restrictions and a Section 166 review initiated by UK regulators, which section empowers the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority to require a regulated financial firm to appoint an independent third party to produce a report on specific aspects of its business.

Some industry observers say the latest leadership change could attract further scrutiny given the institution’s recent regulatory history.

Continue weeding projects your government left in the bush – Health Committee Chair tells Minority https://www.adomonline.com/continue-weeding-projects-your-government-left-in-the-bush-health-committee-chair-tells-minority/ Wed, 10 Jun 2026 19:12:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2671532 Chairperson of Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr Mark Kurt Nawaane, has defended the government’s handling of abandoned health infrastructure projects and urged the Minority to continue drawing attention to facilities left uncompleted by the previous administration.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Dr Nawaane said the concerns being raised by the Minority over stalled health projects mirror the approach the current government adopted while in opposition.

“What the Minority is doing now, we did the same when we were in the Minority,” he said.

His comments come after Minority members on Parliament’s Health Committee, led by Ranking Member Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie, toured several health facilities in the Ashanti Region amid concerns over pressure on health infrastructure, including challenges facing the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Dr Nawaane accused the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration of leaving several projects abandoned for years.

“They should continue weeding. They left those projects there for eight years before we came to power,” he stated.

According to him, some of the facilities had deteriorated significantly due to years of neglect.

“When we went there, all the equipment had been damaged and was no longer fit for purpose. They attempted to commission the facilities, but they couldn’t,” he alleged.

The Health Committee Chair noted that the Sewua and Afari hospital projects were initiated during President John Mahama’s first term in office but remained incomplete throughout the NPP administration.

“The projects in Sewua and Afari were projects Mahama started during his first term,” he said.

Dr Nawaane explained that the government is prioritising economic stability while working to complete abandoned projects.

“When we came, the economy was in intensive care and we have started fixing it,” he said.

He stressed that the government would not resort to excessive borrowing to complete projects.

“We are not going to borrow from external sources for projects. Last year, we used our internal resources. We don’t want to go down the borrowing path anymore because we need to stabilise the economy,” he explained.

Despite the challenges, Dr Nawaane assured Ghanaians that the government remains committed to completing all unfinished health projects across the country.

“We are committed to completing all the uncompleted projects they left behind,” he added.

Court throws out Nyinahin Catholic SHS assault case; parties urged to reconcile https://www.adomonline.com/court-throws-out-nyinahin-catholic-shs-assault-case-parties-urged-to-reconcile/ Wed, 10 Jun 2026 16:17:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2671513 The Toase District Court has struck out the assault case involving a teacher and a student of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School.

The incident, which involved a physical altercation on campus, sparked widespread public outrage after a video of the confrontation went viral on social media.

The case stemmed from an incident in which a teacher, Eric Afful, was captured on video repeatedly striking a female student before lifting and throwing her to the ground.

The footage triggered public condemnation and led to the teacher’s arrest.

When the matter came before the court, it encouraged both parties, together with their families, to pursue an amicable resolution through reconciliation and an out-of-court settlement.

Following the proceedings, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Prof. Elvis Binney, appealed to civil society organisations and members of the public to avoid prejudicial comments about the teacher.

He also urged individuals to refrain from issuing threats against Mr Afful as efforts are made to resolve the matter peacefully.

Nyinahini SHS Incident: We’ve been told it’s an “order from above” – GNAT Chair on teacher’s detention https://www.adomonline.com/nyinahini-shs-incident-weve-been-told-its-an-order-from-above-gnat-chair-on-teachers-detention/ Wed, 10 Jun 2026 15:03:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2671446 The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in the Atwima District has questioned the continued detention of the Nyinahini Catholic Senior High School teacher accused of assaulting a female student, alleging that an “order from above” may be preventing his release on bail.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the Atwima District Chairman of GNAT, Amos Owusu, described the situation as unfortunate and called for fairness in the handling of the case.

“What has happened is very sad, and we shouldn’t tolerate these things for them to fester in our schools,” he said.

According to him, while the teacher’s conduct is under scrutiny, he remains entitled to the legal protections available to every citizen, including the right to bail.

“A teacher was doing his work diligently and had an issue with a student. He was arrested, but he has the right to bail,” Owusu stated.

He disclosed that GNAT officials spent the entire day on Tuesday at the Bibiani Police Station attempting to secure bail for the teacher but were unsuccessful.

“We spent the whole of Tuesday at the Bibiani Police Station, but he couldn’t secure bail because the police said they would arraign him before court on Thursday. We are ready to present him on that day, so why won’t they grant him bail?” he questioned.

The GNAT chairman argued that people accused of more serious offences have been granted bail in the past and wondered why the teacher’s situation was being treated differently.

“Besides, people have committed serious crimes in this country and were granted bail. Did he commit murder?” he asked.

Owusu said the teacher was arrested around 9:30 p.m. on Monday and has remained in police custody since then.

“The whole of yesterday we couldn’t secure bail, which means today too he will be in custody,” he lamented.

He further alleged that information available to the association suggests external influence may be affecting the bail process.

“We are hearing that an order from above says he shouldn’t be granted bail,” he claimed.

Despite the challenges, he expressed hope that the court would consider the circumstances of the case and grant the teacher bail when he appears before a judge.

“We are hopeful that when he appears in court, the judge will attach a human face to the matter and grant him bail, and we will make him available whenever necessary,” he said.

Owusu also complained about what he described as selective public outrage, arguing that teachers often face difficult situations without attracting similar national attention.

“Some teachers have experienced difficult situations, but no leader in this country commented. Everyone was silent, but when it is the students, it becomes a national issue,” he stated.

He further claimed that the student involved in the incident has appealed for the teacher’s release.

“The student herself has cried, pleading for his release because he was provoked beyond limit. So why are they still keeping him?” he asked.

The teacher is expected to appear before court on Thursday as investigations into the incident continue.

Tension mounts as soldiers block Minority MPs’ inspection of Afari Military Hospital https://www.adomonline.com/tension-mounts-as-soldiers-block-minority-mps-inspection-of-afari-military-hospital/ Wed, 10 Jun 2026 12:26:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2671315 Minority Members of Parliament on Parliament’s Health Committee are calling for the immediate operationalisation of the over 500-bed Afari Military Hospital in the Atwima Nwabiagya District of the Ashanti Region, which they say has been left abandoned and deteriorating for years.

The call came during a visit by the MPs, led by Ranking Member Nana Ayew Afriyie, as part of a tour of neglected health facilities in the region following concerns over pressure on health infrastructure, including ongoing challenges at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

However, the visit took an unexpected turn when military personnel stationed at the Afari Military Hospital confronted the lawmakers and residents who accompanied them, questioning their presence on the premises.

The soldiers reportedly insisted that the group had entered the facility without prior clearance, leading to a tense exchange between both sides.

The MPs, on the other hand, maintained that the visit was part of their oversight responsibility and a necessary step to assess the condition of a long-abandoned national asset.

According to them, the hospital—designed as a major over 500-bed facility—has been left overgrown and unused for years, despite growing demand for healthcare services.

Speaking after the confrontation, Nana Ayew Afriyie acknowledged the tension but defended the purpose of the visit.

“Nobody says these things are right, but it is necessary to put pressure on government. It is a tool for demonstration, a tool to express your feeling,” he said.

He stressed that the Ashanti Region deserves equal attention in the distribution of national infrastructure, particularly in the health sector.

“Just as other regions matter, Ashanti also matters,” he added.

The Minority MPs say their broader tour is aimed at drawing attention to abandoned health facilities across the country and pushing for their urgent completion and use, especially at a time when healthcare delivery is under strain.

The incident has since sparked renewed public debate about access protocols to state facilities and the long-standing issue of abandoned infrastructure projects in Ghana’s health sector.

Recounting the mother’s words in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, the Public Relations Officer of the Atwima Mponua District Education Directorate, Eric Aboagye, said the woman had travelled from another town to Nyinahin to engage authorities over the matter.

He said the woman was deeply distressed after seeing the widely circulated video.

“The mother was crying and said that is not how she raised her daughter. She was very surprised to see the video of her daughter fighting with a teacher,” Mr Aboagye stated.

According to him, the mother expressed shock and disappointment over how the incident had escalated.

Mr Aboagye also provided updates on the legal process, explaining that police were preparing to arraign the teacher in court, but the suspect’s lawyers arrived after court sitting hours on Tuesday.

“On Tuesday, the police were processing the teacher for court. His lawyers arrived later, but by then the court had closed,” he explained.

He added that efforts were underway on Wednesday morning to ensure the suspect is brought before the court.

“This morning, they went to the police commander to see how he can be taken to court,” he said.

The footage, which has sparked widespread public outrage, appears to show the teacher physically confronting the student while other students are heard pleading for him to stop. In the video, he is seen repeatedly striking the student and at one point lifting and throwing her to the ground.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

GNAT threatens to boycott English Language WASSCE over detention of Nyinahin Catholic SHS teacher https://www.adomonline.com/gnat-threatens-to-boycott-english-language-wassce-over-detention-of-nyinahin-catholic-shs-teacher/ Wed, 10 Jun 2026 09:34:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2671203 The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in the Ashanti Region has threatened to boycott the English Language West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) set for today, June 10, 2026, and embark on protests if a colleague, Eric Buernortey Apaflo, currently in police custody is not released.

The teacher, who works as a hostel caretaker at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School (GNAT) in the Atwima Mponua District, was detained following an incident involving a final-year female student.

According to the Association, the teacher has remained in custody since his arrest after the altercation, a situation GNAT says raises concerns about how the case is being handled.

“The teacher has done nothing wrong, but we have heard an order from above has been authorized that he is not granted bail instead of them to come down and investigate the matter thoroughly,” he said.

Addressing journalists at the Nyinahini Police Station, the GNAT District Chairman called for immediate intervention by authorities, urging the police to grant the teacher bail and for education officials to ensure due process is followed.

“Should the teacher not be granted bail by tomorrow, GNAT Ashanti Region will be compelled to direct teachers of Nyinahin Catholic SHS and all teachers in the district to boycott the ongoing WASSCE examinations. If the students do not write the English Language, nobody should be blamed,” one of them said.

The association also indicated that if its concerns are not addressed, teachers would take further action, including wearing red armbands and embarking on protest marches to express their dissatisfaction.

“Once it has happened to someone, it can happen to everybody tomorrow. Touch one, touch all. So, if they don’t release the teacher, then the students at Nyinahin will not write the WASSCE. Our investigations have revealed the student is remorseful and begging for forgiveness,” he revealed.

GNAT stressed that while it remains committed to discipline in schools and the welfare of teachers, it expects authorities to act promptly to prevent further escalation.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, the association said the decision was reached after the intervention of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the hospital’s Board, management, and other stakeholders who have demonstrated commitment to addressing concerns that triggered the strike.

“The Komfo Anokye Doctors’ Association (KADA) wishes to inform the general public that the industrial action embarked upon by its members has been suspended with effect from today, 9th June, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. This decision has been made following fruitful engagements and the timely intervention of His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Hospital Board, management, and other key stakeholders who have demonstrated commitment towards addressing the concerns that led to the industrial action,” the statement said.

The association noted that although it remains committed to ensuring a full resolution of the issues that led to the industrial action, it had taken into account the impact of the prolonged strike on patient care and public health.

According to KADA, the safety and well-being of patients, as well as the broader public interest, informed its decision to suspend the action while dialogue continues.

The doctors further expressed gratitude to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Board, hospital management, and other stakeholders for facilitating discussions aimed at achieving an amicable resolution of the impasse.

KADA also acknowledged the support of the National Executive Council and members of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), as well as several health sector unions and professional bodies, including the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, the Health Services Workers’ Union, the Emergency Medicine Society of Ghana, the Orthopaedic Association of Ghana, the Komfo Anokye Certified Registered Anaesthetist Association, the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, and the Komfo Anokye Pharmacists Association.

The suspension brings to an end days of industrial action at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), which disrupted healthcare delivery and left many patients stranded as consultations and other medical services were affected.

Sedina Tamakloe’s extradition does not guarantee Ofori-Atta’s return – Former Deputy AG https://www.adomonline.com/sedina-tamakloes-extradition-does-not-guarantee-ofori-attas-return-former-deputy-ag/ Tue, 09 Jun 2026 19:15:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2671113 Former Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah-Yeboah has stated that the extradition of former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, from the United States should not be interpreted as an indication that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta will also be extradited to Ghana.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Tuah-Yeboah explained that extradition requests are assessed on a case-by-case basis and depend on the specific facts and circumstances surrounding each matter.

“Extradition requests are not automatically granted by a nation. The rules have to be followed,” he said.

According to him, both the requesting and receiving countries carefully examine the legal merits of a case before deciding whether to approve an extradition request.

“It’s all based on the facts and circumstances surrounding the matter. In terms of the pending cases, if there is merit, I’m sure both countries will act on them. But if there are some flaws, either country can choose not to uphold the request,” he stated.

Mr. Tuah-Yeboah stressed that Madam Attionu’s return to Ghana should not create the impression that all persons facing extradition requests will necessarily be brought back to the country.

“The extradition process is handled on a case-by-case basis, so it doesn’t mean that if one person has been extradited, then everyone else will be,” he noted.

Addressing speculation surrounding Mr. Ofori-Atta, he cautioned against drawing conclusions from Madam Attionu’s case.

“It’s not automatic that Ofori-Atta will be extradited now,” he said.

His comments come amid public discussions following Madam Attionu’s return to Ghana after a lengthy extradition process from the United States.

Madam Attionu arrived in Accra on Tuesday aboard United Airlines flight UA996 from Washington Dulles International Airport and was immediately taken into custody by security personnel.

She arrived at the Accra International Airport at approximately 7:18 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, aboard United Airlines flight UA 996 from Washington Dulles International Airport in the United States.

The U.S Embassy in Ghana confirmed the extradition in a Facebook post.

Madam Attionu was received by security personnel upon arrival and immediately taken into custody. She is currently undergoing debriefing and medical examinations as part of standard procedures before being transferred to begin serving her sentence.

Her return follows a protracted extradition process initiated by the Government of Ghana after she failed to return to the country following a medical trip to the United States.

In 2021, Attionu was granted permission by the High Court to travel to the United States for medical treatment while her trial was ongoing. However, she failed to return to Ghana to continue participating in the proceedings, prompting the court to continue the trial in her absence.

Her extradition was confirmed in a Facebook post by the U.S. Embassy in Ghana, which said “The United States has extradited Sedina Tamakloe Attionu to Ghana following her conviction of 70+ corruption-related charges, including embezzling more that $6M equivalent in Ghanaian taxpayer funds.”

In 2024, the Accra High Court sentenced Attionu in absentia to 10 years’ imprisonment after finding her guilty of multiple offences, including causing financial loss to the state and stealing. The court held that her actions during her tenure as MASLOC Chief Executive between 2013 and 2016 resulted in a financial loss of nearly GH¢90 million to the state.

The conviction followed a lengthy legal battle involving allegations of misappropriation and diversion of state resources during her administration of the government-funded microfinance institution.

Following her conviction and sentencing, Ghanaian authorities intensified efforts to secure her return, with the government formally requesting her extradition from the United States in 2025.

A United States District Court in Nevada subsequently considered the extradition request and, after reviewing the application and supporting legal documentation submitted by Ghanaian authorities, certified the request, paving the way for her return to Ghana.

Her arrival marks a significant milestone in one of Ghana’s most high-profile corruption-related prosecutions involving a former public official.

Authorities are expected to complete the necessary administrative, security, and medical procedures before transferring her into the custody of the Ghana Prisons Service, where she will begin serving the custodial sentence handed down by the Accra High Court.

Officials have yet to indicate whether any additional legal proceedings will arise following her return. However, her extradition and transfer to prison are expected to bring closure to a case that has remained in the public spotlight for several years.

The case has been widely cited by anti-corruption advocates as a major test of Ghana’s ability to pursue and secure the return of convicted public officials who leave the country while facing criminal proceedings. Attionu’s extradition is therefore being viewed as a landmark example of international cooperation between Ghanaian and US authorities in the enforcement of criminal judgments.

Teacher captured in viral video fighting female student at Nyinahini Catholic SHS arrested https://www.adomonline.com/teacher-captured-in-viral-video-fighting-female-student-at-nyinahini-catholic-shs-arrested/ Tue, 09 Jun 2026 09:40:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2670866 A teacher at Nyinahini Catholic Senior High School has been arrested after a viral video surfaced showing him allegedly assaulting a female student on campus.

The arrest was confirmed by the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Daniel Fenyi, in a Facebook post on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

“The Nyinahini Catholic SHS teacher seen in the viral video fighting a female student has been arrested! The Regional Education Directorate is investigating the matter. A full report will be submitted to headquarters,” he wrote.

The video, which has sparked widespread public outrage, appears to show the teacher physically confronting the student while other students nearby plead with him to stop.

In the footage, the teacher is seen repeatedly striking the girl and, at one point, lifting and throwing her to the ground. Bystanders can be heard appealing for him to calm down, reminding him that she is a student and a girl.

The teacher, visibly angry, is also heard questioning, “Is she aware she is a lady?”

The exact circumstances that led to the confrontation remain unclear, as school authorities and the Ghana Education Service have not yet provided details.

GES says the Regional Education Directorate has begun investigations and is expected to submit a full report to headquarters for further action.

The incident has triggered renewed concern over student safety and discipline in schools, with many calling for accountability and stronger protection measures within educational institutions.

Further disciplinary or legal steps will depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigations.

Driver burnt to death in tipper truck accident on Accra-Tema motorway https://www.adomonline.com/driver-burnt-to-death-in-tipper-truck-accident-on-accra-tema-motorway/ Tue, 09 Jun 2026 06:24:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2670714 A tipper truck driver has been burnt beyond recognition following a devastating crash involving a fuel tanker and a truck on the Accra–Tema Motorway.

The tragic incident triggered a massive fire outbreak, prompting an emergency response from personnel of the Motorway, Ashaiman and Industrial Area Fire Stations.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service, firefighters successfully brought the blaze under control with support from a water tanker provided by the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, preventing the fire from spreading further.

While three people were rescued from the scene and rushed to Tema General Hospital for treatment, the driver of the tipper truck was trapped in the wreckage and could not be saved.

Recovery operations were subsequently launched, with firefighters undertaking the difficult task of retrieving the charred body from the remains of the truck.

Personnel from the Ashaiman Police Command were also deployed to the scene to provide security and assist with recovery efforts.

The cause of the crash is yet to be officially established, while investigations are expected to determine the circumstances that led to the collision and subsequent fire.

The incident caused heavy traffic congestion along portions of the busy motorway as emergency responders worked to contain the situation and clear the wreckage.

Family demands justice as military officer is remanded over civil engineer’s killing https://www.adomonline.com/family-demands-justice-as-military-officer-is-remanded-over-civil-engineers-killing/ Mon, 08 Jun 2026 19:58:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2670650 The family of 29-year-old civil engineer, Jeffrey Boakye Danquah, is demanding justice after he was allegedly shot and killed by a military officer.

A group of family members, led by the deceased’s sister, Gifty Serwaa, gathered at the Akropong District Court on Monday as the suspect, Private Nsarkoh Christopher Nkyinkyi, made his second court appearance.

Family members told Joy News they hope the court’s final judgment will serve as a deterrent to security personnel in the discharge of their duties.

Police officers at the court had to intervene to calm relatives who expressed anger toward the accused.

The shooting reportedly occurred weeks ago at the Ghana Armed Forces Central Command Headquarters in Kumasi, following a misunderstanding between Private Nkyinkyi and Danquah.

Prosecutors told the court that the confrontation escalated and the accused allegedly fired a round from an M16 rifle at close range. The bullet struck Danquah in the chest and exited through his back, resulting in his death.

The prosecution said investigations are at an advanced stage, but military authorities have yet to produce the rifle allegedly used, despite a previous court order.

Presiding Judge, His Lordship Emmanuel Wiafe Adu, ordered that Private Nkyinkyi remain in custody at the Central Command Headquarters in Kumasi until the next hearing.

ASP Jonas Newlove Adjei, Crime Officer at the Suntreso Police District Command and prosecutor in the case, said he was satisfied with the adjournment. He added that ongoing investigations would help the court establish the full facts to ensure that justice is served.

The case has been adjourned to June 22, 2026.

Court cases won’t stop my National Chairmanship ambition – Wontumi https://www.adomonline.com/court-cases-wont-stop-my-national-chairmanship-ambition-wontumi/ Mon, 08 Jun 2026 19:15:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2670625 Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Chairmanship hopeful, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has dismissed suggestions that his ongoing legal challenges could affect his ambition to become the party’s next National Chairman.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Wontumi described himself as a law-abiding citizen who has always made himself available whenever required by the courts.

“I am law-abiding and go to court anytime I am needed. I don’t think the court cases bar me from contesting,” he said.

According to him, he would not discuss matters currently before the courts on radio, stressing that the issues should be left in the hands of the judiciary.

“Everyone knows I don’t run away from questions. But at the same time, I don’t want to bring a courtroom issue to radio. It’s a judicial matter, so I’ll leave it for the judges and the courts,” he noted.

Chairman Wontumi also denied engaging in illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, insisting that he conducts his affairs within the confines of the law.

“Everyone knows the people who do galamsey. I don’t do galamsey,” he stated.

The National Chairmanship hopeful reiterated his commitment to the party, saying he has remained loyal throughout his political career and is focused on helping the NPP return to power in the 2028 general elections.

“I have never been disloyal to the NPP. I do my job diligently and I love the party. My mission is to lead the NPP to victory,” he stressed.

Wontumi said if elected National Chairman, he would dedicate himself to serving party members across the country and strengthening the party’s structures.

“When I am given the mandate, I will serve and not be served. I will move across all the regions and constituencies to solve problems, give hope and support members so that our flagbearer becomes the next President of the Republic of Ghana,” he said.

He further maintained that the legal challenges facing him have rather strengthened his resolve to pursue the position.

“My court trial will not stop my ambition to become National Chairman. If anything, it has strengthened my resolve and made me even more popular,” he said.

Chairman Wontumi expressed confidence in his chances of winning the race, insisting that nothing would deter him from achieving his goal.

“I am focused and determined to win the election and lead the NPP to victory in 2028. Nothing can stop me from becoming the NPP’s National Chairman. My strength is with God,” he added.

English criticism won’t stop me, I’m contesting to serve NPP grassroots – Wontumi https://www.adomonline.com/english-criticism-wont-stop-me-im-contesting-to-serve-npp-grassroots-wontumi/ Mon, 08 Jun 2026 19:02:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2670598 Aspiring National Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, has dismissed criticism about his English proficiency, insisting that leadership is about service and results rather than language fluency.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Chairman Wontumi said he remains focused on helping the party regain power in the 2028 general elections and is not bothered by comments questioning his academic credentials or command of the English language.

“People saying I don’t speak good English doesn’t stop me. I’m unperturbed,” he stated.

According to him, his decision to contest for the NPP National Chairmanship is driven by a desire to serve the party and strengthen its grassroots base rather than seek prestige or titles.

“I’m not in the National Chairmanship race for an English-speaking competition. I’m in it to serve the people, and I will always speak the language the grassroots understand,” he said.

Wontumi argued that the party’s primary objective should be winning political power, not focusing solely on academic qualifications.

“I’m not here to spoil our constitution but to fulfil it and claim victory for the party. I don’t think the party is concerned about titles; rather, the party wants power,” he said.

The three-time Ashanti Regional Chairman said his experience within the party over the past two decades is his strongest qualification for the position.

“My certificate is my experience. I have been in this for 20 years. I have been regional chairman three consecutive times. I have the party constitution at heart,” he stated.

“We had elite leaders for the 2024 elections and we lost, so why don’t we try the grassroots as well?” he questioned.

He pledged to work towards rebuilding the party and correcting mistakes that contributed to its electoral setback.

“I am coming to alleviate us from the pain of the election we lost. We have learnt from our mistakes and we are going to correct all of them,” he said.

The NPP national chairman hopeful further argued that his election would inspire ordinary party members by showing that commitment and hard work can lead to leadership positions regardless of educational background.

“If I am made chairman, it will debunk all the allegations that if you don’t have a certificate you can’t rise up the ranks in the NPP. It will give everyone hope that if you work in the party well, you can be promoted to higher positions,” he stated.

Wontumi also promised to foster stronger collaboration between the party’s grassroots and its intellectual and professional wings.

“The grassroots, for the first time, will partner with academia. I am going to be a chairman for everyone—a working chairman, a grassroots chairman and a listening chairman,” he said.

He expressed confidence that under his leadership, the NPP would become more united and better positioned to recapture power in 2028.

“We will work collectively, and the NPP is going to work again,” he added.

Mahama bars ministers, CEOs from accepting private awards without approval https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-bars-ministers-ceos-from-accepting-private-awards-without-approval/ Mon, 08 Jun 2026 15:55:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2670551 President John Dramani Mahama has directed all ministers, chief executive officers of state institutions and other political appointees to refrain from participating in or accepting awards from private organisations unless expressly authorised by the Office of the President.

The directive was contained in a circular dated June 8, 2026, and signed by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama.

According to the Presidency, the decision follows concerns over the growing number of private organisations conferring awards on public officials and branding them as the “best-performing”, “most outstanding” or “most influential” office holders.

The statement noted that many of these organisations are largely unknown to the public and often lack transparent, objective and verifiable criteria for assessing the performance of public officials.

“In many instances, the organisations conferring such awards are largely unknown to the public, their credentials are unclear, and no transparent, objective, or verifiable criteria exist for assessing the performance of public officials,” the directive stated.

The Presidency warned that the proliferation of such awards could undermine the integrity of public service, create misconceptions about how government performance is assessed and expose the government to unnecessary criticism.

It stressed that public office is a responsibility entrusted to officials by the people of Ghana and that performance should not be measured through privately organised award schemes or self-appointed rating bodies.

“Performance in office cannot be measured by privately organised ceremonies, self-appointed rating bodies, or commercial award schemes whose methodologies and standards are neither established nor subject to public scrutiny,” the statement said.

President Mahama further directed all political appointees to refrain from sponsoring, endorsing, attending or accepting awards from such organisations without prior approval from the Presidency.

The directive emphasised that the true measure of performance for ministers and chief executive officers would be based on their ability to deliver on policy objectives, programmes and sector-specific targets outlined in the 2024 manifesto of the National Democratic Congress and the government’s development agenda.

According to the Presidency, officials will be assessed on tangible outcomes, measurable impact, effective service delivery, prudent management of public resources and the successful implementation of government policies.

The statement also disclosed that the Presidency will in due course undertake a comprehensive review of the performance of ministers and chief executive officers.

The outcome of that review, it said, will play a significant role in decisions regarding retention in office, reassignment of responsibilities and any future cabinet or executive restructuring.

Public officials have therefore been urged to focus on delivering results for Ghanaians rather than seeking recognition through external award schemes of questionable credibility.

I need you all to return to duty – Suspended KATH CEO appeals to striking staff https://www.adomonline.com/i-need-you-all-to-return-to-duty-suspended-kath-ceo-appeals-to-striking-staff/ Mon, 08 Jun 2026 14:42:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2670531 The Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr. (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo, has appealed to staff of the hospital who are currently on strike over his suspension to return to work and prioritise patient care.

In a letter to staff issued by the Office of the Chief Executive on Monday, June 8, 2026, Dr. Baidoo expressed gratitude to the staff for what he described as their “show of solidarity” during the industrial action, which has disrupted services at the facility.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all staff of the hospital for your show of solidarity with me during this period. I am very grateful for your support,” the letter said.

However, he urged the workers to resume duty in the interest of patients and the nation.

“I need you all to return to duty in the supreme interest of Ghanaians and our valued patients, whilst I defer the outcome and directions to the supreme wisdom of the Hon. Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and the Board of KATH,” he stated.

Dr. Baidoo’s appeal comes amid disruptions to healthcare delivery at the hospital, with patients reportedly facing challenges in accessing medical services due to the industrial action.

The development follows a directive issued by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on June 5, 2026, instructing the Board of KATH to suspend Dr. Baidoo for two weeks with immediate effect.

The directive, contained in a letter dated June 5, stated that the CEO’s decision to announce a temporary suspension of emergency admissions at the hospital was inconsistent with instructions issued by John Dramani Mahama regarding the management of the situation at the facility.

Avenor building collapse: Death toll rises to three https://www.adomonline.com/avenor-building-collapse-death-toll-rises-to-three/ Mon, 08 Jun 2026 12:01:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2670459 The death toll from the collapse of a four-storey building at Avenor in North Kaneshie has risen to three after one of the two survivors rescued from the rubble succumbed to injuries sustained in the incident, the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has confirmed.

The building collapsed in the early hours of Sunday, June 7, 2026, trapping four people beneath the debris.

Speaking on the latest developments, the Mayor disclosed that the deceased include the owner of a Mothercare shop that operated within the building.

Initially, rescue teams recovered two people alive and rushed them to hospital, while two others were pronounced dead at the scene. However, one of the survivors later died while receiving treatment, raising the number of fatalities to three.

The four-storey structure, believed to have been constructed around 2020 or 2021, housed both commercial and residential occupants.

As investigations continue, preliminary assessments by engineers from the Ghana Institute of Engineers have raised serious concerns about the building’s compliance with safety standards.

According to the engineers, there are indications that the structure may not have had a building permit from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly. They also observed what appeared to be poor-quality concrete, which they believe may not have met the minimum strength requirements needed to support a building of that size.

Structural Engineer Emmanuel Aidoo stressed that buildings of such magnitude require proper engineering supervision throughout the construction process.

“These structures have to be engineered. You can’t just use your mind to construct such buildings. It’ll come back and hunt you,” he said.

Authorities are yet to establish the exact cause of the collapse. Investigators are expected to conduct further tests, including concrete sampling and structural modelling, before issuing a final report.

The Avenor tragedy is the second fatal building collapse recorded in Accra within a week. On June 3, a residential building collapsed at Adenta New Site, killing one person and leaving four others injured.

The two incidents have renewed concerns about building safety in the capital and intensified calls for stricter enforcement of permit regulations, routine inspections and greater accountability within the construction sector.

Why treat us like we stole the land? – Tema Community 25 resident laments demolition after court order https://www.adomonline.com/why-treat-us-like-we-stole-the-land-tema-community-25-resident-laments-demolition-after-court-order/ Mon, 08 Jun 2026 11:20:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2670398 A resident of Tema Community 25 whose home was demolished following the execution of a court order has criticised the manner in which security personnel and bailiffs carried out the operation, saying residents were treated like criminals despite having purchased the land in question.

Daniel Haruna Seidu, one of several residents affected by the demolition, said armed and masked police officers accompanied bailiffs to the community without prior notice, leaving families scrambling to salvage their belongings.

Recounting the events, Mr. Seidu on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem said the team arrived at the property on Wednesday morning as residents were preparing to leave for work.

“We were getting ready to go to work and were coming out of the house when I saw police and some civilians who were later identified as bailiffs. They came to the premises and said they were taking possession,” he said.

According to him, he was aware there had been a court case involving the vendor of the land and another family, but believed residents should have been informed before the operation was carried out.

“I engaged them and told them they should have notified us so that we pack and allow them to do whatever they wanted to do. But the bailiff told me that is how they work. Once the order comes, they move in that style to carry it out.”

Mr. Seidu said he was particularly disturbed by the heavy security presence, describing the officers as fully armed and masked despite the presence of women and children in the area.

“I didn’t think it was the best because they were armed and considering that there were children there. I tried to engage them but it didn’t look as if they were interested in listening.”

He said residents pleaded for more time and an opportunity to discuss the matter but their appeals went unanswered.

“They were led by one WO and we begged them to even give us time because they had no reason to treat us like we stole the land. We bought the land, so if there is an issue, all that is needed is for us to sit and talk.”

According to him, the officers and bailiffs entered several rooms and began removing belongings before locking the property.

“They cleared the hall, went into my children’s room, my room and that of my sister. They removed about 30 percent of the things outside, locked the house and went away.”

The family was subsequently forced to move its belongings to a temporary location provided by a well-wisher.

“By God’s grace, someone gave us a place to put our things temporarily and organise ourselves while we decided the next line of action,” he said.

Mr. Seidu further claimed that residents were unable to get immediate answers from individuals connected to the legal process despite repeated attempts to reach them.

“We were hoping to speak with someone. We had the contact of the lawyer said to be representing the plaintiff. I called and he said he was in court and would get back. Other people called too, but we couldn’t get any clear information.”

He said the situation worsened on Saturday when demolition activities began.

“Someone called me to say they had started the demolition and when we rushed there, it was ongoing. We have been displaced.”

According to him, between 13 and 15 houses were affected by the exercise.

“On Saturday, we had to look for another truck and people to help us salvage what we could because I still had about 70 percent of my properties in the building.”

While acknowledging the existence of a court order, Mr. Seidu questioned why residents were not engaged before the exercise was undertaken.

“Nobody came to tell us anything. You couldn’t attach a human face to the process and engage the residents so we come to an agreement. It wasn’t as if they approached us and we resisted.”

He added that many affected residents remain devastated by the experience and are seeking answers as they try to rebuild their lives.

“We need dialogue and we need to know the way forward, but you don’t do this.”

Muntaka announces demolition of 16 buildings within Greater Accra Region https://www.adomonline.com/muntaka-announces-demolition-of-16-buildings-within-greater-accra-region/ Mon, 08 Jun 2026 08:33:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2670332 The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has revealed that 16 structurally unsafe buildings across the Greater Accra Region have been marked for demolition as authorities intensify efforts to prevent further building-related disasters.

The move follows the collapse of a three-storey building at Avenor in North Kaneshie on Sunday, June 7, which claimed two lives and left three others injured. The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of ageing and poorly maintained structures in the capital.

Speaking to journalists during a visit to the disaster scene, Mr Muntaka said the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) had identified several buildings deemed unsafe and posing risks to public safety.

He indicated that authorities are currently evacuating occupants from the affected structures ahead of the demolition exercise.

According to the Interior Minister, the intervention forms part of a broader effort to reduce preventable disasters and safeguard lives and property.

He stressed the need for stricter enforcement of building safety regulations, noting that while some disasters may be unavoidable, authorities must take proactive steps to address known structural risks.

“Currently, NADMO has identified about 16 buildings within the Greater Accra Region that have to come down. We are going to ensure that, coming into the week, they will go and get all those buildings down,” he said.

“We are currently doing the evacuations, and they must bring all those buildings down,” Mr Muntaka added.

Health Ministry defends suspension of KATH CEO amid doctors’ strike https://www.adomonline.com/health-ministry-defends-suspension-of-kath-ceo-amid-doctors-strike/ Mon, 08 Jun 2026 06:44:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2670224 The Ministry of Health has defended its decision to suspend the Chief Executive Officer of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, describing the strike action by doctors and nurses at the facility as unfortunate.

In a statement, the Ministry explained that the suspension was not intended as punishment but rather an administrative measure to ensure accountability and facilitate an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the announced closure of the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Centre.

According to the Ministry, the decision followed Dr. Baidoo’s public announcement of the cessation of admissions at the emergency unit without prior approval from the hospital’s Governing Board or the Ministry.

The Ministry maintained that the action was inconsistent with a directive issued by President John Dramani Mahama, which requires all public health facilities to continue providing emergency healthcare services and prohibits them from turning away patients under any circumstances.

Officials clarified that the suspension relates solely to Dr. Baidoo’s role as Chief Executive Officer and does not affect his position as a medical practitioner at the hospital.

The statement further stressed that the matter is unrelated to internal arrangements between the hospital and the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate, contrary to claims circulating in the public domain.

The Ministry expressed concern that the closure of a major emergency facility at one of Ghana’s leading referral hospitals could have serious implications for patient care and therefore required strict adherence to established administrative procedures.

While acknowledging the operational challenges facing the Accident and Emergency Centre, the Ministry noted that decisions with national implications for healthcare delivery must be properly coordinated with the relevant authorities.

The Ministry also appealed to members of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association and the Nurses Chapter to reconsider their industrial action and return to work while discussions continue.

It emphasised that dialogue remains the most appropriate avenue for resolving grievances and ensuring uninterrupted healthcare services for the public.

Meanwhile, the Ministry disclosed that the Ghana Health Service has been directed to implement immediate measures to guarantee the continued provision of emergency healthcare services during the impasse.

The statement highlighted several ongoing interventions aimed at improving healthcare delivery across the country, including hospital retooling, the introduction of a National Bed Management System, efforts to operationalise selected Agenda 111 projects, and the establishment of cardiac catheterisation laboratories at KATH, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and Tamale Teaching Hospital.

The Ministry further revealed that work on the Sewua Hospital project is progressing steadily and is expected to be completed before the end of 2026.

Reaffirming its commitment to both patients and health workers, the Ministry said it remains focused on ensuring a safe working environment while safeguarding access to quality healthcare services nationwide.

According to eyewitness accounts, five heavily armed robbers stormed the busy market and opened fire, discharging more than 20 rounds of ammunition during the attack.

The assailants reportedly targeted the mobile money vendor, fatally shooting him before fleeing the scene. Another victim sustained gunshot wounds and is currently in critical condition.

Two trapped as another building collapses at North Industrial Area [Photos] https://www.adomonline.com/two-trapped-as-another-building-collapses-at-north-industrial-area/ Sun, 07 Jun 2026 07:15:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2669990 Rescue efforts are underway to save at least two people who are believed to be trapped under a building that collapsed at North Industrial Area in the early hours of today, Sunday, June 6, 2026.

Emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces have been at the scene of the incident, which happened around 4:25am close to Melcom Plus at the North Industrial Area.

According to eyewitnesses, one person who was sleeping upstairs jumped down upon hearing the crash sound and has been rushed to the hospital for medical attention, while efforts continue to locate and remove persons believed to be trapped under the rubble.

Residents and workers in the area say they rushed to the scene after hearing a loud crashing sound shortly before dawn.

“I heard a huge bang and when we came out, the whole structure had come down,” an eyewitness recounted.

Firefighters from the Circle Fire Station and the GNFS Headquarters were among the first responders deployed to the scene and are currently conducting intensive search-and-rescue operations using specialised equipment.

Officials at the scene have cordoned off the area to facilitate the rescue exercise and prevent further casualties.

Rescue teams are battling against time amid concerns about the stability of portions of the collapsed structure. Heavy equipment is expected to be deployed to assist in removing concrete slabs and twisted metal believed to be blocking access to the trapped victims.

The latest incident comes just three days after another building collapsed at Adenta, renewing public concern over building safety standards and regulatory enforcement

GMA backs KATH doctors’ strike, demands CEO’s reinstatement within three days https://www.adomonline.com/gma-backs-kath-doctors-strike-demands-ceos-reinstatement-within-three-days/ Sat, 06 Jun 2026 20:13:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2669925 The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has declared its full support for the ongoing strike by doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), describing the suspension of the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer as unjustified and demanding his reinstatement within three working days.

The position was announced in a statement issued on Saturday, June 6, 2026, following an emergency meeting of the Association’s National Executive Council (NEC).

According to the GMA, it fully endorses the decision by the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA) to withdraw services until the suspension of the CEO is reversed.

The Association also criticised the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, accusing him of making comments that could incite public sentiment against health workers.

Defending the actions of KATH management that led to the suspension, the GMA argued that the temporary halt in new emergency admissions and the redirection of patients to nearby health facilities were appropriate measures taken in the interest of patient safety.

The Association maintained that the decision was consistent with best practices in healthcare administration and emergency management.

According to the statement, the measures did not amount to abandoning patients or disregarding directives from the President.

“Rather, the actions redirected patients and ensured they received safe and timely care at nearby hospitals with support from specialists from KATH,” the Association stated.

The GMA noted that the coordinated intervention, involving the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate, the Regional Coordinating Council, healthcare facilities, and health workers, helped decongest the Accident and Emergency Centre and enabled the resumption of new admissions within 24 hours.

The Association therefore concluded that the initial query issued to the CEO and the subsequent suspension directive were unwarranted.

“Council, therefore, is of the considered view that the initial query issued and subsequent directive for suspension were without basis and ought not to have been occasioned,” the statement said.

The GMA is demanding the immediate withdrawal of the directive to suspend the CEO and his reinstatement within three working days.

It further reiterated its support for KADA’s industrial action, stating that the strike will continue until the suspension is reversed and concrete steps are taken to improve emergency healthcare capacity in the Kumasi enclave.

NDC dismisses reports of cabinet reshuffle, urges public to verify information https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-dismisses-reports-of-cabinet-reshuffle-urges-public-to-verify-information/ Sat, 06 Jun 2026 16:12:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2669889 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed reports circulating on social media and other platforms claiming that the government has undertaken a cabinet reshuffle, describing the information as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on June 6, the party urged the public to disregard the reports and refrain from sharing unverified information.

According to the NDC, the claims form part of deliberate attempts to spread misinformation and create unnecessary confusion among the public.

“As we all strive to curb the menace of deliberate misinformation, some individuals will stop at nothing to poison the atmosphere,” the statement said.

The party stressed that any official communication regarding government decisions should be verified through authorised channels before being circulated.

It noted that Felix Kwakye Ofosu remains the official spokesperson for the administration and should be the primary source of information on matters relating to government announcements.

“The official spokesperson for this administration is Felix Kwakye Ofosu. Kindly verify any such information through his official channels before sharing it,” the statement urged.

The NDC further cautioned the public to be responsible in their use of social media and other communication platforms, warning that the Cyber Security Act provides sanctions for the dissemination of false information.

“The Cyber Security Act can have serious implications, so let us all be mindful and responsible in our communication,” the statement added.

KATH Doctors begin indefinite strike over CEO’s suspension, demand immediate reversal https://www.adomonline.com/kath-doctors-begin-indefinite-strike-over-ceos-suspension-demand-immediate-reversal/ Sat, 06 Jun 2026 13:31:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2669854 Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have begun an indefinite withdrawal of services in protest against the suspension of the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, describing the decision as unjustified and harmful to efforts aimed at addressing challenges at the facility.

The action was announced by the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA) following an emergency meeting on June 5, 2026, to review recent developments at the hospital, including congestion at the Emergency Department and the suspension of the CEO.

In a statement to the Chairman of the KATH Board, the association expressed disappointment that measures taken by management to handle overwhelming patient numbers and ensure safe care had resulted in disciplinary action against the hospital’s leadership.

According to the doctors, the temporary suspension of new emergency admissions and the diversion of patients to other facilities were necessary steps to prevent avoidable deaths amid severe pressure on the hospital’s resources.

KADA noted that KATH, which serves as a major referral centre for Ghana’s middle and northern regions, continues to face longstanding challenges including inadequate infrastructure and rising patient numbers, describing the current crisis as a reflection of broader systemic issues in the health sector.

The association argued that addressing these challenges requires urgent investment and policy intervention rather than sanctions against administrators managing difficult conditions.

Following deliberations, members unanimously condemned the CEO’s suspension and resolved to withdraw services effective 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2026.

The doctors say the industrial action will remain in force until their key demands are met, including a review and reversal of the CEO’s suspension.

They are also calling on the KATH Board to establish clear protocols for handling situations where emergency capacity is exceeded.

Additionally, KADA is urging the Ministry of Health to provide clear timelines for the operationalisation of the Sewua Hospital and Afari Military Hospital, as well as a roadmap for upgrading KATH and other health facilities in the Ashanti Region to ease pressure on the referral centre.

Firefighters rescue trapped passenger after STC bus, taxi collision at Konongo https://www.adomonline.com/firefighters-rescue-trapped-passenger-after-stc-bus-taxi-collision-at-konongo/ Sat, 06 Jun 2026 09:07:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2669796 Firefighters from the Konongo-Odumasi Fire Station rescued a passenger trapped in a crushed taxi following a head-on collision with an Intercity STC coach at Konongo Akrantiebesa in the Ashanti Region.

The accident occurred on the night of Thursday, June 4, 2026, near the Next Bon Gas Filling Station along the main highway.

According to reports, the collision left both vehicles extensively damaged, with the taxi suffering the worst impact. The force of the crash reportedly destroyed the vehicle’s engine compartment and compressed parts of the cabin.

Before emergency responders arrived, residents and motorists at the scene assisted in rescuing some of the victims from the wreckage. Three injured persons were successfully pulled out and rushed to Steward Hospital for treatment.

However, rescuers were unable to free a fourth passenger whose legs had become trapped beneath the mangled dashboard and chassis of the Kia Picanto taxi.

Following a distress call, a team from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived at the scene and launched a rescue operation.

Using specialised hydraulic rescue equipment, firefighters carefully cut through sections of the damaged vehicle and successfully extricated the trapped passenger.

The victim was given emergency care at the scene before being transferred to Asante Akyem Central Hospital for further treatment.

The GNFS confirmed that four people sustained injuries in the crash. No deaths were recorded.

The accident temporarily disrupted traffic on the busy highway as emergency personnel cleared debris, broken glass and leaked fluids from the road to ensure the safety of other motorists.

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has impounded the damaged vehicles, while investigations are underway to establish the cause of the crash.

GHS condemns assault on midwife; suspect to appear in court June 8 https://www.adomonline.com/ghs-condemns-assault-on-midwife-suspect-to-appear-in-court-june-8/ Sat, 06 Jun 2026 08:51:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2669784 A relative of a patient who allegedly assaulted a midwife at the Community 22 Polyclinic in Tema is expected to be arraigned before court on June 8, 2026, following his arrest by the Ghana Police Service.

The case stems from an incident on June 2, 2026, during which the suspect reportedly attacked and manhandled the midwife while she was enforcing the facility’s visiting hours policy.

The alleged assault, which has sparked widespread public concern after a video of the incident circulated on social media, has renewed discussions about the safety and security of healthcare workers across the country.

Condemning the attack, the Ghana Health Service (GHS), through the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate, described the incident as an unacceptable act of violence against a healthcare professional who was carrying out her lawful duties.

“The staff member, a midwife, was attacked by a patient’s family member while enforcing the facility’s visiting hours policy. The attack was unprovoked,” the Directorate said in a statement.

The Directorate expressed solidarity with the victim and healthcare workers across the region, stressing that no health professional should face intimidation, abuse or physical assault while discharging their responsibilities.

“We stand firmly behind the affected midwife and every member of staff across our facilities. They come to work to serve the public, and they must be able to do so without fear of physical harm,” the statement added.

According to the Ghana Health Service, swift intervention by the Ghana Police Service helped restore calm at the facility and led to the arrest of the suspect.

The incident has also drawn the attention of the Ministry of Health, which recently dispatched a six-member delegation, acting on the instructions of Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to visit the assaulted midwife and express the government’s support.

The delegation conveyed the ministry’s concern over the attack and assured the victim of continued government support as investigations continue.

The ministry further reiterated its commitment to protecting healthcare workers and ensuring that acts of violence against medical personnel are not tolerated.

Using the occasion to educate the public, the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate reminded patients and their relatives that concerns regarding healthcare delivery should be addressed through established complaint-resolution mechanisms rather than confrontational behaviour.

It pointed to the Client Service Desks available in health facilities nationwide as the appropriate channels for lodging complaints and resolving grievances.

“Per the directive of the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, all grievances must be channelled to the Client Service Desk, which is present in every Ghana Health Service facility,” the statement explained.

Health sector observers say the incident highlights the growing vulnerability of healthcare workers, who often operate under demanding conditions while serving large numbers of patients.

Medical practitioners have repeatedly warned that violence against healthcare workers affects staff morale, disrupts healthcare delivery and can ultimately compromise patient care.

The Community 22 incident has therefore renewed calls for stricter enforcement of laws protecting healthcare workers, improved security at health facilities and increased public education on patient-health worker relations.

Despite the unfortunate incident, the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate reaffirmed its commitment to providing quality healthcare services and urged the public to treat healthcare workers with dignity and respect.

“Violence against health workers will not be tolerated,” the statement stressed.

Health Minister suspends KATH CEO over emergency admissions announcement https://www.adomonline.com/health-minister-suspends-kath-ceo-over-emergency-admissions-announcement/ Fri, 05 Jun 2026 19:04:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2669710 The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has directed the Board of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to suspend the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer for two weeks with immediate effect.

The directive, contained in a letter dated June 5, 2026, cites the CEO’s announcement on the suspension of admissions of emergency cases at the facility as the reason for the disciplinary action.

According to the Minister, the CEO acted contrary to directives issued by President John Mahama when he announced the suspension of emergency admissions at the hospital on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.

“Pursuant to Section 36 (1) of the Ghana Health Service and Teaching Hospitals Act, 1996 (Act 526), I am respectfully directing the Board to suspend the Chief Executive Officer for a period of two (2) weeks with immediate effect, for causing to be announced the suspension of admissions of emergency cases to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital on Wednesday, June 3, 2026,” the letter stated.

The Health Minister further revealed that a meeting attended by the Chief Director, Technical Advisor and Legal Advisor of the Ministry had determined that the CEO’s actions were inconsistent with the President’s directives.

In addition to the suspension, Mr Akandoh has instructed the Board to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding both the announcement and a media interview granted by the Head of Public Affairs Unit of KATH to Channel One News.

According to the Minister, the Public Affairs Unit also acted contrary to presidential directives by commenting publicly on the suspension of admissions.

“I am also respectfully requesting you to undertake a thorough investigation to establish on what authority he made those comments on Channel One Newsroom. Further whether it was a management decision for him to grant the said interview. Where necessary the appropriate sanctions should be applied,” the Minister directed.

The Board has been asked to submit a report on its findings within two weeks.

The development follows public concern over the temporary suspension of emergency admissions at the Kumasi-based referral hospital amid challenges affecting healthcare delivery at the facility.
