ECG announces temporary outages in Kumasi Ridge amidst transformer upgrade https://www.adomonline.com/ecg-announces-temporary-outages-in-kumasi-ridge-amidst-transformer-upgrade/ Mon, 04 May 2026 06:42:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2658135 The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a major transformer upgrade at the Kumasi Ridge Substation as part of efforts to strengthen power supply and improve service reliability in the enclave.

The exercise will run from Wednesday, May 6, to Saturday, May 9, 2026.

ECG said the project forms part of the government’s Transformer Replacement and Upgrade Programme, which aims to improve electricity infrastructure and reduce pressure on the distribution network.

Under the project, an existing 20/26MVA power transformer at the Kumasi Ridge substation will be replaced with a higher-capacity 30/39MVA unit.

According to ECG, the upgrade follows similar completed projects at Adenta Primary Substation, Nmai Dzorm Primary Substation, Lashibi Primary Substation and Teshie-Nungua Primary Substation.

To allow engineers to carry out the work safely, customers in the Kumasi Ridge catchment area will experience phased, scheduled power interruptions during the four-day period.

ECG said each affected group is expected to face outages lasting about six hours, depending on the work schedule.

The company said the upgrade is expected to increase supply capacity in the Kumasi Ridge area, reduce system overloads and equipment failures, minimise the frequency and duration of outages, and improve voltage stability.

The utility acknowledged the inconvenience the temporary interruptions may cause but said the exercise is necessary to secure long-term improvements in electricity supply.

Detailed outage schedules, ECG said, will be communicated through its official channels.

The company added that the project forms part of its broader commitment to strengthening Ghana’s power distribution network through sustained infrastructure investment and proactive maintenance.

49 arrested after NAIMOS taskforce survives attack in Western region https://www.adomonline.com/49-arrested-after-naimos-taskforce-survives-attack-in-western-region/ Sat, 02 May 2026 10:23:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2657850 The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested 49 suspected illegal miners following a dawn operation at Adiewoso in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region.

The operation, carried out on Thursday, April 30, 2026, targeted illegal mining activities within the concession of Ghana Rubber Estates Limited (GREL) and followed what officials describe as a dangerous ambush on NAIMOS personnel two days earlier.

According to NAIMOS, the earlier incident occurred on Tuesday, April 28, when a group of armed illegal miners allegedly opened fire on a taskforce team stationed in Nzema East. The attackers reportedly discharged multiple rounds at a NAIMOS vehicle, forcing officers to withdraw tactically without injuries.

The incident triggered an intelligence-led operation, culminating in a coordinated cordon and search exercise between 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. at Adiewoso and nearby communities.

In total, 114 individuals were initially apprehended and screened at the Adiewoso Community Centre. After verification, 49 were identified as suspected illegal miners and handed over to the Agona Divisional Police Command for further investigations.

Authorities say eight of those detained were confirmed as casual workers of GREL and were released, while 12 others were identified as senior high school students. The remaining individuals were cleared as artisans and residents with no links to illegal mining.

Three of the suspects were identified as foreign nationals from Niger and Burkina Faso.

During the operation, NAIMOS operatives recovered a pump-action gun and seized large sums of money believed to be proceeds from illegal mining. This included GH₵140,000 found in a Toyota Raize linked to one suspect, and an additional GH₵86,710 recovered from a Toyota Hilux, along with substances suspected to be gold.

The owner of the Hilux, identified as Ebenezer Cobbinah, was arrested at the scene and is assisting with investigations. Officers also seized substances suspected to be Indian hemp and cartons of cigarettes believed to be connected to the illegal operation.

A joint team made up of GREL management and personnel from the Agona Ahanta Police Command supported the exercise, helping to distinguish legitimate workers from suspects.

NAIMOS says the operation underscores its determination to clamp down on illegal mining, particularly in areas where it threatens lawful businesses and the environment.

The Secretariat assured the public that it remains resolute and will not be deterred by acts of violence or intimidation in its efforts to protect Ghana’s natural resources and bring offenders to justice.

Akosombo Dam fully restored after switchyard fire disruption – Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/akosombo-dam-fully-restored-after-switchyard-fire-disruption-mahama/ Fri, 01 May 2026 18:47:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2657714 President John Dramani Mahama has announced that electricity generation at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam has been fully restored following recent disruptions caused by a fire at the Volta River Authority (VRA) switchyard control room.

Addressing workers during the 2026 May Day celebrations held at Jackson Park in Koforidua, the President disclosed that the facility is now fully operational after engineers successfully resolved the technical challenges triggered by the incident.

“Just yesterday, I was in Akosombo in the Eastern Region to inspect the damage at the Volta River Authority Electricity Generation Station following the devastating fire in the switchyard control room,” he said.

President Mahama noted that although the incident raised public concern over power supply stability, engineers from the Volta River Authority and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) worked jointly to restore operations within a short period.

According to him, the technical team successfully bypassed the damaged control system and restarted all six turbines at the Akosombo Generating Station.

“I know many of you are concerned about the disruptions to the electricity supply caused by the Akosombo fire, but I want to share the good news that GRIDCo and VRA engineers working together have been able to bypass the bent-out control room and have restarted all the six turbines at the Akosombo Generating Station,” he stated.

He further confirmed that the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam was fully back online as of the previous night, restoring normal power generation capacity.

The President commended the engineers involved in the recovery effort, describing them as a key pillar in national development.

“These engineers are a living testament to the fact that Ghanaian workers are the nation’s most valuable assets,” he added.

Sabotage won’t get me sacked – Ejisu MCE asserts after attack on her https://www.adomonline.com/sabotage-wont-get-me-sacked-ejisu-mce-asserts-after-attack-on-her/ Thu, 30 Apr 2026 18:32:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2657496 Ejisu Municipal Chief Executive, Jerryne Asante, says sabotage and attacks against her will not lead to her removal from office by President John Dramani Mahama.

Her comment follows a recent violent incident at the Ejisu Municipal Assembly office, which she says occurred after she halted the alleged illegal sale of state land reportedly involving some Ejisu NDC executives.

Speaking on Nhyira FM’s ‘Kro Yi Nsem’ show on Thursday, April 30, Ms. Asante defended her decision to stop what she described as an attempted illegal takeover of state property by party executives, including Regional Women’s Organiser Gloria Huze.

“As MCE, it is my duty to ensure that all state properties under my jurisdiction are protected, as mandated,” she told the host, Barima Kofi Dawson-Akokoa.

She added that she will not allow anyone, regardless of political affiliation, to take the law into their own hands or seize government property.

Jerryne Asante described the attack as an act of sabotage intended to pressure the Presidency into dismissing her.

She insisted she will not be removed from office over the incident, as long as she continues to uphold the government’s “Resetting Agenda” and ensures proper governance practices.

“I am acting in line with the government’s agenda. I will not be sacked over this,” she stated.

She further cautioned some Ejisu NDC executives, warning that their actions could damage the party’s reputation and bring embarrassment to the government if not checked.

“Some Ejisu NDC executives justify their actions by claiming NPP executives also took over state land and warehouses when they were in power. But this is what the NPP did, and it led them into opposition. We must not repeat it,” she said.

The Ejisu MCE also dismissed claims that her recent hospital admission was linked to the alleged attack at her office.

While confirming she has been admitted, she clarified that her condition is not related to the incident.

“I have been admitted to hospital, but it is not related to the attack,” she added.

Two shot dead, 2 arrested as Police foil robbery attempt at Buipe https://www.adomonline.com/two-shot-dead-2-arrested-as-police-foil-robbery-attempt-at-buipe/ Thu, 30 Apr 2026 15:45:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2657422 The Ghana Police Service has thwarted a planned robbery attack at Buipe in the Savannah Region, resulting in the arrest of two suspects and the death of two others during a follow-up operation.

Savannah Regional Deputy Police Commander, Reynolds Manteaw, said the incident began on April 26, 2026, when a patrol team along the Yapei–Tamale road encountered three armed men.

Accra-based Citi News reported that the suspects opened fire on an armoured police vehicle, forcing officers to return fire. The men then fled into nearby bushes, leaving behind a locally manufactured firearm and an empty cartridge.

Subsequent intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of two suspects, Osman Abdulai, also known as “Landan”, and Umar Seidu, in Tamale on April 27.

During interrogation, the suspects reportedly admitted they had planned to carry out a robbery at Yapei but abandoned the plan after being involved in a motor accident. They also confessed to attacking the police patrol team and named their accomplices as Babuga, Kilor and Malami.

Police say the two suspects later led officers to a location along the Yapei–Salaga road, where a single-barrel shotgun with a modified barrel and five rounds of ammunition were retrieved.

During a follow-up operation, two of the suspected accomplices were reportedly killed in a shootout with police, while others are said to be on the run as investigations continue.

In a follow-up operation on April 29, officers tracked the remaining suspects to a guest house in Buipe. ACP Manteaw said that during an attempt to arrest them, one of the suspects, identified as Babuga, allegedly attacked officers with a machete and was shot.

Both suspects sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the Buipe District Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival.

Their bodies have since been deposited at St. Ann’s Hospital in Damongo for preservation and autopsy, as investigations into the case continue.

Mahama visits Akosombo substation, commends VRA’s response to fire incident https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-visits-akosombo-substation-commends-vras-response-to-fire-incident/ Thu, 30 Apr 2026 15:19:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2657405 President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Volta River Authority (VRA) for its swift response to the recent fire outbreak at the Akosombo control room, describing the incident as an opportunity to modernise the ageing facility.

During a visit to assess the damage and ongoing recovery efforts at Akosombo on April 30, the President expressed sympathy over the incident but praised the technical team for restoring power generation within a short time.

“We heard about the sad event, the fire outbreak in your control room, and of course, Ghanaians have felt the impact,” he said, adding that the Authority’s response reflected strong institutional capacity.

“I’m not surprised because VRA has some of the best human resources you can get anywhere. When I heard they were going to find a way of bringing it back, I was not surprised,” he stated.

Mr Mahama described the fire as unfortunate but significant, given the age of the facility.

“This is an act of God because who would have expected that a control room that has been there since 1964 would experience this kind of fire?” he noted.

He said the incident now creates room for improvement and long-term upgrades.

“They say adversity is an opportunity. Now that this has happened, it allows us to replace it with a more modern control room that will serve this plant for generations to come,” he added.

The President revealed that progress has already been made in restoring operations at the plant.

“I have been briefed that four of the turbines are back on, and work is ongoing to bring the remaining two back online. I am told more good news will follow soon,” he said.

He further commended staff of the VRA and its partners for their efforts, encouraging them to sustain the momentum towards full restoration.

“VRA will continue to be one of the foremost institutions, together with the Ghana Grid Company, and government will continue to support you,” he assured.

I was sacked from the ward, so I had to communicate with her on phone – Sister of deceased pregnant woman at Kasoa https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-sacked-from-the-ward-so-i-had-to-communicate-with-her-on-phone-sister-of-deceased-pregnant-woman-at-kasoa/ Thu, 30 Apr 2026 11:57:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2657276 Fresh details have emerged in the death of Abigail Opoku, the pregnant woman who died at the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital, as her sister, Doris Opoku, recounts the distressing moments leading up to her passing.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Doris said medical staff at Stanford Clinic in Kasoa had already warned the family about complications and advised that a caesarean section (CS) would likely be necessary.

“Medical workers at Stanford Clinic told us that her water had broken but the cervical dilation was not enough. So when we go to Kasoa Mother and Child and they suggest a CS, we should not resist,” she explained.

According to her, she and her father took Abigail to the hospital and informed staff about the recommendation for a surgical delivery.

“But when we got there and told them, a midwife said even if they do the CS, there will be no bed for her,” she alleged.

Despite this, Abigail was admitted to the labour ward in the early hours of the morning.

“We got there before 3 a.m. I stayed with her until about 12 p.m. when my father and I left for my mother to come and take over,” Doris said.

She added that her sister began complaining of severe headaches while at the facility.

However, Doris said she was later asked to leave the ward, forcing her to stay in touch with Abigail by phone.

“They sacked me from the ward, so I was communicating with her on the phone. I kept asking if they had come to attend to her or given her any medicine, and she said no,” she recounted.

According to her, attempts to ensure their mother could step in were unsuccessful.

“When my mum came, I called to inform them I was bringing her in to see Abigail because I was leaving for the house, so if anything happened, she should call her. But the nurses declined,” she claimed.

Doris said her sister continued to complain of worsening pain during their phone conversations.

“She told me she was in a lot of pain,” she added.

Her account adds to growing concerns from the family over the care Abigail received prior to her death, with calls intensifying for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Father of pregnant woman who died at Kasoa Mother and Child recounts final hours [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/father-of-pregnant-woman-who-died-at-kasoa-mother-and-child-recounts-final-hours-audio/ Thu, 30 Apr 2026 10:48:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2657252 The father of a pregnant woman who died at the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital has shared a detailed account of the events leading to her death, as the Ghana Health Service launches investigations into the incident.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Sampson Ansong, father of the deceased, Abigail Opoku, said his daughter initially visited the hospital on her own before he later joined her.

“She went to the hospital herself, then I later took her things to her,” he recounted.

According to him, he was later informed that she had been referred to the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital, prompting him to return and assist with the transfer.

“I came back home and around 10:30am, I had a call that she had been transferred so I went back to take her to the referral facility,” he said.

At the facility, Mr Ansong claimed concerns were raised about the referral process. “A nurse at Kasoa Mother and Child said when they [Stanford Clinic] want to transfer someone, they don’t even call to check if there is a bed before bringing the patient,” he alleged.

Despite this, he said his daughter was admitted and monitored. “They asked us to bring her things in and gave her a bed. They took her in and began monitoring her,” he noted.

He explained that by midnight, she was still in labour and was sent for laboratory tests.

“Around 12 midnight, they asked her to go for some lab tests. They told us everything was alright and she would give birth,” he said.

Mr Ansong added that his daughter remained in labour through the night into the following day without delivering.

“We waited all night and morning till around 1pm and she had still not delivered,” he stated.

He said he briefly left the hospital to freshen up, leaving his wife and another daughter to continue caring for her. “So, I called my wife to come and take over then I returned home around 2pm,” he said.

The circumstances surrounding her death have sparked public concern, with allegations that she may have been denied a timely caesarean section.

In response, the Ghana Health Service has constituted a committee to investigate the reported maternal death at the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital.

In a statement, the Service assured the public of a thorough and transparent probe.

“The findings and recommendations will be made available to the public to inform measures aimed at preventing future occurrences,” it said.

The case has since reignited conversations around maternal healthcare, referral systems, and emergency response in health facilities across the country.

Church of Pentecost Elder arrested over alleged galamsey at Akyem Morso https://www.adomonline.com/church-of-pentecost-elder-arrested-over-alleged-galamsey-at-akyem-morso/ Thu, 30 Apr 2026 08:10:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2657210 The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested a man identified as David Bobie Peter, said to be an elder of The Church of Pentecost, for allegedly operating an illegal mining site at Akyem Morso near Juaso in the Ashanti Region.

The arrest followed a targeted operation along the Kume River, spanning Morso, Kyekyebiase and Bimma in the Asante Akim South District.

According to NAIMOS, the task force first stormed a large illegal mining enclave at Kyekyebiase, where several young men were found actively engaged in mining. The operators, however, fled into nearby bush paths upon sighting the team, abandoning their equipment.

Although no immediate arrests were made at that stage, the task force proceeded to dismantle the site, destroying eight chanfang machines and four wooden gold-washing platforms through controlled burning. Several hose pipes were also set ablaze, while 12 water pumping machines were seized.

A further sweep of the area led the team to a concealed excavator hidden within a nearby cocoa farm. The machine had already been partially disabled, but officers rendered it completely inoperable by removing key components.

NAIMOS said the suspect was later picked up during the operation after he approached the team claiming he was visiting his farm. “Intelligence… established that the man was in fact a foreman of one of the illegal mining sites,” the statement noted.

Upon questioning, he allegedly admitted to overseeing operations at a site in Morso and said he had been sent by his employer to confirm reports of the task force’s presence. He subsequently led officers to the location.

At the site, the extent of environmental destruction became evident, with sections of the Kume River heavily polluted and diverted to support mining activities. Another excavator was found and similarly disabled by the task force.

NAIMOS described the suspect’s alleged role and admission, alongside his position as a church elder, as raising serious concerns. He has since been handed over to the Konongo District Police for further investigations and possible prosecution.

The Secretariat has issued a strong warning to individuals involved in illegal mining, stressing that enforcement will not be influenced by status or affiliation.

“The fight against illegal mining demands a unified, unwavering and uncompromising response,” NAIMOS said, urging authorities and communities to intensify monitoring efforts to curb environmental destruction.

Kasoa: Pregnant woman dies after C-section request allegedly denied due to lack of bed https://www.adomonline.com/kasoa-pregnant-woman-dies-after-c-section-request-allegedly-denied-due-to-lack-of-bed/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 19:08:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2657077 A pregnant woman has reportedly died after health workers at Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital allegedly denied her request for a caesarean section due to the unavailability of a bed in the recovery ward.

The deceased, Opoku Abigail, was initially taken to a private health facility for delivery but was later referred to the Kasoa-based hospital after complications delayed labour, according to her family.

Relatives claim that upon arrival at the facility between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m., both the patient and her family requested an emergency caesarean section. However, they allege that hospital staff declined the request, citing a lack of space in the recovery ward.

“They told us the recovery ward was full, so they couldn’t perform the surgery. They insisted she would deliver naturally,” a relative recounted.

The family further alleged that Abigail was left in severe pain without adequate medical intervention, despite repeatedly requesting surgical assistance.

She reportedly died nearly 36 hours after arriving at the hospital, with the baby still in her womb. The family also claims she was left on the bare floor in the delivery ward during the ordeal.

The incident, which reportedly occurred on Sunday, has sparked outrage among relatives and friends, who say the death could have been prevented if timely medical care had been provided.

A sister of the deceased, Doris Opoku, is calling for a review of the hospital’s operations, insisting that her sibling’s life might have been saved if the request for a caesarean section had been honoured.

The hospital is yet to officially respond to the allegations.

Meanwhile, friends and sympathisers have launched a social media campaign demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

Missing eight-year-old girl found dead at Sefwi-Asawinso https://www.adomonline.com/missing-eight-year-old-girl-found-dead-at-sefwi-asawinso/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 14:26:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656945 A search for an eight-year-old girl who went missing at Sefwi-Asawinso has ended in tragedy after her body was discovered less than 24 hours later.

Information gathered suggests that her lifeless body was later found in a cocoa farm on the outskirts of Sefwi-Asawinso.

The Assemblyman for the Asawinso-Sefwi line electoral area, Adu Stephen, disclosed that the deceased, Josphine Ayitey, went missing from her home on Sunday afternoon while she was with her playmate.

A search for her proved unsuccessful until her body was found dumped in a cocoa farm the following day.

An eyewitness, Dr Daud, told Adom News that he observed marks suggesting her neck had been twisted, although there were no visible bloodstains on the body.

She was found naked in a prone position in a cocoa farm near Nkwakaw, a suburb of Sefwi-Asawinso.

The incident has reignited fear among residents, with some noting a worrying pattern of similar cases in the area. Community members say the development brings back memories of past incidents locally referred to as “One Head One Kia,” which had previously caused widespread panic in parts of the Sefwi enclave.

Residents are calling for swift investigations to uncover the circumstances surrounding the young girl’s death and to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

NDC Women’s Organiser frustrating me because I was chosen over her brother – Ejisu MCE alleges https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-womens-organiser-frustrating-me-because-i-was-chosen-over-her-brother-ejisu-mce-alleges/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 13:23:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656920 The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ejisu, Jerryne Asante, has accused the Ashanti Regional Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (National Democratic Congress), Gloria Huze, of leading a sustained campaign to frustrate her and force her out of office.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the MCE claimed the alleged actions stem from dissatisfaction over her appointment, insisting that Madam Huze had wanted her brother to be named MCE instead.

“It is all because she wanted her brother to be MCE but he wasn’t appointed, so she has vowed to use every means possible to frustrate me until I leave office,” she alleged.

Madam Asante further accused Madam Huze of repeatedly undermining her authority and inciting party members against her.

“She has been to my office to insult and harass me, vowing to lead a demonstration against me because they say they don’t want me,” she said.

According to the MCE, the situation has escalated into what she describes as deliberate attempts to destabilise the local administration, including calls for the removal of key officials.

“She will be inciting people against me, demanding the removal of the Presiding Member and the Coordinating Director,” she claimed.

She also cited an incident in which rubbish was allegedly dumped in the middle of a road in Ejisu, an act she believes was politically motivated to tarnish her image.

“They called me out and even attached President John Dramani Mahama’s name, saying sanitation in Ejisu is bad. I ensured those involved were arrested, yet the same people accuse me of giving the party a bad name,” she stated.

The MCE further alleged misconduct relating to the handling of state resources, questioning attempts to take over facilities without due process.

“If you need a warehouse, I can help you get one. But you don’t take the law into your own hands. What is my crime in protecting state properties?” she asked.

She also rejected claims that she was behind the destruction that occurred during a recent invasion of her office. “You invade my office, destroy property, and then turn around to accuse me of doing it myself,” she said.

Despite the tensions, Madam Asante called for calm among party supporters, urging patience and unity. “The government cannot give all of us what we want at the same time,” she noted.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Madam Asante identified her alleged attackers as the Ashanti Regional NDC Women’s Organiser, Gloria Huze, the Ejisu Constituency Chairman, the Organiser, and the Youth Organiser.

The MCE claimed the four individuals attacked her unprovoked on Monday, April 27, 2026, over an alleged warehouse break-in involving party executives.

“These constituency executives were the same people who led the youth to lock down the NHIA office. They all wanted the MCE position and didn’t get it, so they have vowed to frustrate me. They have leased out some lands to people and were even summoned to the palace. Their argument was that the NPP did it while in power and they will also do it,” she claimed.

Madam Asante, while condemning the incident, cautioned against division in the municipality and within the party, stating that this is not the first time an MCE’s efforts have been frustrated.

“It is important for us to reach a consensus with the chiefs because they are the custodians of the and even if they need a parcel of land for something, they have to involve me to ensure calm and order at all levels.

“They always create confusion and cause apathy among party members. They fight every MCE appointed in the area but I have decided not to pay attention to anything they are doing to ensure peace,” she added.

According to preliminary information, officers conducting routine checks stopped a MAN Togo cargo truck with registration number GW 9927–13, travelling from Accra-Tema Station towards Damanko in the Nkwanta North District.

A search of the vehicle reportedly led to the discovery of more than 20,000 rounds of ammunition, as well as a foreign-made firearm.

The items retrieved include 7,000 AA ammunition, 3,000 BB cartridges, and 1,124 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, among others, bringing the total haul to over 20,000 rounds.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified as Kende Richard, aged 26, while his mate is Latif Adam, aged 20.

Both individuals have been arrested and are currently in custody assisting with investigations.

The Nkwanta South Police Command are supporting the ongoing inquiry to establish the source, intended destination, and possible network behind the consignment.

The interception comes amid heightened security measures in the Nkwanta Municipality, where authorities have intensified surveillance due to concerns about insecurity and recurring conflicts in parts of the district.

Security officials say the increased vigilance is aimed at preventing the movement of weapons and ammunition that could fuel tensions or criminal activity.

Members of the public have called for the officers at the checkpoint to be commended for their professionalism, alertness, and intelligence-led operations, which resulted in the retrieval and arrests. Investigations are ongoing, and police are expected to provide further updates as the case develops.

Brogya Genfi clarifies claims military land has been handed to Ibrahim Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/brogya-genfi-clarifies-claims-military-land-has-been-handed-to-ibrahim-mahama/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 10:36:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656800 The Deputy Minister of Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, has dismissed claims that military lands have been handed over to Ibrahim Mahama, brother of President John Dramani Mahama, for private development.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, Mr Genfi described the reports as “false and malicious,” insisting they do not reflect the reality of what is taking place.

“I wish to firmly dismiss and ignore any false and malicious reports suggesting that military lands have been given to the President’s brother to develop. That story is completely untrue,” he stated.

He explained that the project in question is a redevelopment initiative by the Ghana Armed Forces aimed at replacing ageing infrastructure at Burma Camp.

According to him, many of the existing facilities date back to the colonial era and are now in a deteriorating state, making redevelopment necessary.

Mr Genfi clarified that the initiative is being driven through a self-help housing programme, with support from private individuals and organisations, including Mr Mahama.

He revealed that the businessman, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Dzata Group Holding Limited, has contributed significantly to the project.

“In support of this noble initiative, Mr Ibrahim Mahama has generously donated GHC120 million as part of the replacement programme,” he said.

The donation was announced during a fundraising luncheon held at the Ghana Military Academy, which was chaired by Sam Jonah and attended by corporate leaders and partners of the armed forces.

Mr Genfi described the contribution as a patriotic gesture that will have a direct impact on the welfare of military personnel.

“His contribution will directly improve the welfare of our gallant men and women in uniform, who sacrifice daily for the peace and security of our nation,” he added.

Residents say the attackers struck at night, throwing the community into fear as gunfire echoed across the area, forcing people to flee for safety. The group is also accused of destroying property and targeting key individuals within the community.

Speaking to Adom News, the Bretuo Abusuapanin of Akyem Pusupusu, Nana Kwame Oduro, revealed that this is the second such attack on the community.

“This is not the first time. They came at night, fired gunshots, and caused panic among residents,” he said.

The caretaker of the chief’s palace, Samuel Owusu Boadi, also confirmed that the palace was not spared.

“They fired gunshots at the palace and threatened the chief and other Nananom,” he disclosed, adding that fear has gripped the entire community.

The incident has since been reported to the Kyebi Divisional Police Command, the Eastern South Regional Police Command, and the Ofori Panin Fie.

According to residents, a similar attack occurred last year in Akyem Pusupusu, during which properties were destroyed, but no arrests were made despite the case being reported to the police.

However, in a new development, police have arrested four suspects believed to be connected to the latest attacks, which occurred over the weekend. The suspects have since been granted bail as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, residents remain on edge, calling for increased security presence to prevent further violence and to protect lives and property.

Say it as it is – Clergy reject pressure to stay quiet on politics https://www.adomonline.com/say-it-as-it-is-clergy-reject-pressure-to-stay-quiet-on-politics/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 06:48:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656705 General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Cyril Fayose, has pushed back against growing calls for religious leaders to stay silent on political issues.

He insists that the clergy have a duty to speak on national matters without fear of being tagged partisan.

Speaking on PM Express with Evans Mensah, Rev. Fayose acknowledged the delicate balance clergy must strike, given the diversity within their congregations.

“The Christian Council member churches are careful to be non-partisan. They are non-partisan in their dealings with members of their congregations, because the members of our congregations belong to all the parties,” he said.

He explained that this diversity demands restraint in tone, but not silence. “As a leader of people from diverse party affiliations, you must respect their sensibilities, so you should not make certain statements,” he noted.

However, he rejected the suggestion that such caution should prevent the church from speaking on governance and national issues.

“But that is not to say that we should not make comments on political happenings in our country without the fear that we will be branded as belonging to one party or the other,” he said.

Rev. Fayose was emphatic about the church’s responsibility in public discourse. “No, we have to say it as it is,” he stressed, framing the role of the clergy as one rooted in truth-telling rather than political alignment.

He grounded his position in democratic principles, pointing to the local understanding of democracy.

“We have described democracy in our local language as ‘Kabi na menka bi’, to wit ‘Everyone must have their freedom of speech’, so we all have the right to speak,” he said.

The comments come at a time when public debate continues over the role of religious institutions in Ghana’s political space, with some critics urging restraint while others call for stronger moral voices on governance.

Rev. Fayose aligned the church’s stance with a broader civic duty, invoking a well-known call to citizenship.

He referenced former President Nana Akufo-Addo, noting that he is “famously quoted as saying that we should be ‘citizens and not spectators’.”

“And that’s all we are doing,” Rev. Fayose said. “We are not going out to declare our support for a particular party or a particular Party’s position.”

Instead, he framed the church’s engagement as constructive oversight.

“We are out there to help comment on the actions of our leaders so that together, we’ll have a better country,” he said.

Ministry of Health pays nurses’ arrears, announces plans to recruit 16,000 health workers https://www.adomonline.com/ministry-of-health-pays-nurses-arrears-announces-plans-to-recruit-16000-health-workers/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 18:36:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656660 The Ministry of Health has confirmed the payment of two months’ arrears to newly recruited nurses and outlined plans to recruit up to 16,000 health workers as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s healthcare system.

In a press release issued on April 28, the Ministry said the payment of arrears forms part of its commitment to addressing concerns raised by newly engaged nurses across the country.

It further assured affected personnel that additional payments covering three months—May to July 2026—would be made as previously announced.

The Ministry expressed appreciation to nurses and other stakeholders for their patience and cooperation, noting that government remains committed to building a stronger and more responsive health workforce to improve service delivery nationwide.

Officials also advised individuals facing challenges or seeking clarification on payments to contact the Human Resource for Health Development Directorate of the Ministry for assistance.

On recruitment, the Ministry disclosed that it is working towards engaging about 16,000 health professionals this year. It indicated that financial clearance has already been secured for about 8,000 positions, with efforts ongoing to obtain approval for the remaining slots.

The Ministry stressed that no recruitment would be undertaken without the necessary financial backing, adding that the approved clearances have been distributed across various health cadres to ensure a structured and gradual absorption of personnel into the health system.

Reiterating its commitment to transparency and fairness, the Ministry said the official recruitment portal remains the only authorised channel for all recruitment processes.

It acknowledged that the high number of applicants has placed pressure on the system, with some candidates experiencing difficulties accessing the portal.

The Ministry described the resulting concerns as understandable and assured applicants that steps are being taken to secure additional clearances to accommodate more qualified health professionals.

The latest update comes amid ongoing efforts by the government to address workforce gaps in the health sector and improve access to quality healthcare services across the country.

Family breaks silence on Konongo Odumase female teacher’s death https://www.adomonline.com/family-breaks-silence-on-konongo-odumase-female-teachers-death/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 18:30:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656645 An uncle of the late teacher at Konongo Odumase M/A Basic School, Grace Stepheny, has recounted the painful final moments leading to her sudden death.

Speaking in an interview with Adom News, Isaac Kumi said his niece showed no signs of illness before leaving home for school that morning.

“She was fine and left for school in the morning. We were here when a student and a teacher came to inform us that she had felt unwell at school,” he said.

According to him, the teacher complained of severe neck and throat pains upon arrival at school, prompting colleagues to rush her to a health facility.

“She complained of neck and throat pains; she was even crying, so one teacher took her to the hospital. I decided to join them there,” he narrated.

Mr Kumi said upon arrival, doctors confirmed that despite efforts to stabilise her, she had passed on.

“We got to the hospital and I met the doctor. He confirmed that my niece, Grace Stepheny, had been brought in, but they did all they could—she passed on. We saw her lying on a stretcher,” he said.

He added that the family initially held on to hope, delaying the transfer of the body to the morgue.

“The doctor even delayed taking her to the mortuary because we hoped things would change. It was around 2 p.m. that they finally called the mortuary workers,” he recounted.

Mr Kumi disclosed that medical staff indicated her condition was linked to high blood pressure.

“The nurses said when she came, her pressure was high. They were monitoring her and engaging her in conversation when she suddenly collapsed. They checked again and it was critically low,” he explained.

In a further twist, he revealed that another teacher, believed to be a close friend of the deceased, also passed away around the same time.

“It was later we heard another teacher had passed on. I learnt they were good friends,” he said.

He noted that the second deceased had reportedly been unwell for over a month and was receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

The deaths have left the Konongo Odumase community in shock, as colleagues and family struggle to come to terms with the sudden loss.

Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred around 5:30 a.m., when about 50 uniformed men arrived at the site with an excavator and began pulling down the structure without prior notice.

A couple living on the land alleged that they were held at gunpoint during the operation, leaving them traumatised.

“The whole experience was terrifying. We felt completely helpless,” one of the victims recounted.

Residents claim the team, reportedly led by an individual identified only as “Olanyo,” ordered the immediate demolition of the mosque, locally referred to as “masalachi.”

The incident has sparked fear and panic within the community, with some residents alleging that it is not the first time they have faced such intimidation.

Community members are now calling on authorities, including the Ghana Police Service and the Ministry of the Interior, to investigate the matter and ensure accountability.

They are also demanding clarity on the circumstances that led to the demolition, as well as protection from further incidents.

The symbolic exercise, which involved the pouring of libation, was carried out by residents of Salma, Anwia, Akango and Duale, who say they are determined to resist any move to allow the mining firm back into their communities.

According to the Abusuapanyin, Kwaw Nkrumah, the ritual serves both as a protest and a spiritual appeal to protect their lands and livelihoods.

The development follows the recent revocation of the company’s mining licence by government over alleged illegal operations and breaches of regulatory requirements.

Residents insist the decision must remain final.

Traditional leaders who participated in the exercise said the invocation reflects the depth of anger and concern among community members, stressing that their lands remain their primary source of livelihood.

They are therefore calling on government to uphold its decision and ensure that the company does not return to the area.

Community members accuse the company of causing significant environmental damage, including the destruction of farmlands and pollution of water bodies, which they say has worsened living conditions.

Some residents who spoke to the media warned that they will continue to resist the company through lawful means, cautioning that any attempt to reinstate the concession could trigger renewed tensions.

NAIMOS arrests two galamsey kingpins on Offin River https://www.adomonline.com/naimos-arrests-two-galamsey-kingpins-on-offin-river/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 09:47:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656364 The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat has arrested two alleged galamsey “kingpins” during a raid on the banks of the Offin River in the Atwima Mponua District.

The operation, carried out on Saturday, April 25, 2026, between 1:00 p.m. and 9:50 p.m., followed what officials described as “hot intelligence” pointing to ongoing illegal mining activities at Akomfrem along the river.

When the taskforce arrived, several miners reportedly fled the scene, abandoning equipment and makeshift structures used for the illegal mining operations.

However, two suspects—a man and a woman—were apprehended at the scene. They reportedly claimed ownership of the mining site but failed to produce any legal documentation authorising mining activities.

The suspects were identified as 36-year-old Comfort Abayie and 28-year-old Ayenga Abraham.

In a statement, the taskforce explained that both were found in possession of mobile phones and other items suspected to be linked to illegal mining operations.

From the site, officers seized a wine-coloured Honda CRV with registration number DV 9678Y-2025, allegedly belonging to Abayie, as well as a wine-coloured JMC pickup with registration number DV 4168-2026, driven by Abraham.

Several high-end mobile phones, including iPhone models, were also retrieved, along with two sachets of suspected unrefined gold dust found on Abraham.

In a further sweep of the area, the taskforce dismantled and destroyed several pieces of equipment believed to be used for illegal extraction. These included six Changfan machines positioned directly on the Offin River, a KOOP diesel welding machine, as well as pipelines, water hoses, and temporary structures supporting the operation.

Following the raid, the suspects and seized exhibits were handed over to the Nyinahini District Police Command for further investigation and processing. NAIMOS has since confirmed that the items remain under secure custody for onward transfer to its headquarters.

Officials say the exercise forms part of intensified surveillance operations aimed at protecting Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves from illegal mining degradation. The Secretariat also reiterated its warning to illegal miners to desist from activities along river bodies, stressing that enforcement actions will be swift and sustained.

NAIMOS further expressed gratitude to members of the public for what it describes as “critical intelligence support” that continues to aid field operations.

I deliberately took off my generator to experience the feeling of Ghanaians – Deputy Energy Minister on power outage https://www.adomonline.com/i-deliberately-took-off-my-generator-to-experience-the-feeling-of-ghanaians-deputy-energy-minister-on-power-outage/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 06:57:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656255 Deputy Energy Minister Richard Gyan Mensah has revealed that he deliberately removed the generator from his home to experience the same power outages faced by ordinary Ghanaians.

Speaking on Joy News PM Express, he said the decision was personal and aimed at grounding his understanding of the crisis.

“Immediately I was given my position as the deputy Energy Minister, I took off the generator. I took it off because at that point I wanted to feel what Ghanaians go through when the light goes off, I want to experience it.”

He explained that rising demand at the start of the year has strained the power system.

“At the beginning of the year, demand quickly shot up… So demand shooting up means that the sources of distribution… there’ll be a lot more pressure… in some areas, the transformers became overloaded.”

According to him, investigations revealed that overloaded transformers were behind outages in several communities, though response teams have been quick to act.

“Most of the cases… There has been a very prompt response time to the complaints.”

But beyond the technical challenges, the minister said he wanted to feel the outages firsthand.

“If my light goes off, I quickly receive a call that, oh, our area, the light has gone off. Sometimes send a text message to them they get back to me that they have done this.”

He added that he actively monitors restoration efforts. “Sometimes I can monitor the power immediately… they would report back to me that the power is back.”

Pressed during the interview, he confirmed the personal sacrifice. “Exactly,” he said when asked if he sleeps in the dark.

The decision, he admitted, has not been easy at home. “For one year, even though I’m having some issues… I will be comfortable with it, but my wife will not be comfortable with that.”

Still, he said the experience has changed his perspective.

“People really measure us by how they are able to get constant and reliable power I wanted to also be in that ordinary state to see when somebody’s light goes off, how it feels.”

He stressed that without this, the crisis could seem distant. “Maybe you might see it as abstract. But now, when the light goes off, my light goes off as well.”

The minister disclosed that he has resisted alternatives like solar power to stay aligned with the reality of most citizens.

“Installing solar could do it, but if I install solar, then you will feel that what about the ordinary Ghanaian who doesn’t have what it takes to install solar?”

He recounted a recent outage at home. “Last Saturday… between 6am and about 12pm … the light was off. I was in the house with my kids, even though I was calling Akosombo every now and then to check up on what’s happening.”

Despite the discomfort, he said the move is temporary. “I’m looking at improving the system… when I know Ghanaians are okay, I’ll bring it back.”

Power instability and weeds choke water supply in Eastern Accra https://www.adomonline.com/power-instability-and-weeds-choke-water-supply-in-eastern-accra/ Tue, 28 Apr 2026 06:28:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656247 Residents across parts of Accra and Tema are facing worsening water shortages as the Ghana Water Company Limited has confirmed ongoing supply disruptions, largely caused by unstable electricity supply and environmental challenges.

In a press release, the company said it “wishes to inform our cherished customers and the public of the water supply challenges currently being experienced across the Tema Region and Accra Regions,” citing persistent power instability as the main cause.

According to the statement, “the ongoing instability in power supply to the Water Treatment Plants and associated Booster Stations” has severely affected operations, highlighting the critical role electricity plays in water production and distribution.

“Ghana Water Ltd. wishes to emphasise that water production and distribution operations are heavily dependent on electricity,” the company said, explaining that “the treatment process, pumping systems, transmission facilities, and booster stations all require stable and continuous power supply to function efficiently.”

It warned that “any interruption or fluctuation in power supply directly affects our ability to produce and distribute water to customers,” underscoring the scale of the challenge facing the capital and surrounding communities.

The situation has been further worsened by environmental factors at the Kpong Water Intake.

The company disclosed that “the occasional influx of aquatic weeds at the Kpong intake point has further compounded the situation,” adding that recent weather conditions have intensified the problem.

“While this remains a usual occurrence, the recent heavy rains in the Akosombo area have significantly worsened the situation, leading to unusually large volumes of weeds, increased clogging of intake screens, and restrictions in raw water abstraction for treatment,” the statement said.

Despite the setbacks, the utility assured the public that efforts are underway to stabilise supply.

“Management wishes to assure our cherished consumers that the GWL technical teams are working continuously to clear the weeds, maintain operations, and minimise the impact on supply,” it stated.

The company added that it is engaging key institutions to resolve the power challenges at the root of the crisis.

“Management is actively engaging Volta River Authority, Ghana Grid Company, Electricity Company of Ghana, and all relevant stakeholders to ensure the speedy repair, restoration, and stabilisation of a constant and consistent power supply to enable full water production and normal distribution.”

The combined impact of power outages and weed invasion has resulted in what the company described as “intermittent and reduced water supply to several communities within the Tema and Accra Regions,” leaving many households and businesses struggling with unreliable water access.

The latest development adds pressure to already strained urban infrastructure, as residents brace for continued disruptions while authorities work to restore stable water production and distribution.

ACEP raises alarm over deepening power crisis, demands urgent reforms https://www.adomonline.com/acep-raises-alarm-over-deepening-power-crisis-demands-urgent-reforms/ Mon, 27 Apr 2026 19:22:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656229 The Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has expressed grave concern over Ghana’s worsening power crisis, warning that persistent outages are disrupting livelihoods, weakening economic activity, and eroding public confidence in the energy sector.

In a statement signed by Kodzo Yaotse, Policy Lead for Petroleum and Conventional Energy at ACEP, on April 27, 2026, the think tank noted that households, businesses, and institutions have endured over a month of escalating power cuts. It said the situation has been compounded by a recent fire incident at the Ghana Grid Company’s Akosombo substation.

According to ACEP, the incident has taken out approximately 960 megawatts of relatively cheaper and reliable generation capacity, triggering widespread load shedding across the country.

The policy think tank criticised the quality of communication from power sector operators, stating that updates on outages have been irregular, inconsistent, and unreliable, with blackouts often extending beyond announced areas.

The organisation also questioned explanations linking the outages to ongoing transformer upgrades, noting that similar claims in the past by the Electricity Company of Ghana were later found to be inaccurate following independent audits by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission.

It argued that the scale and duration of the outages point to deeper systemic challenges, including constraints in natural gas supply and processing, inadequate maintenance, and inefficiencies in planning within the power sector.

ACEP urged the Minister for Energy and Green Transition to avoid short-term emergency measures that could create long-term financial and operational risks, and instead focus on addressing structural weaknesses in the sector.

The statement further called for a thorough and credible investigation into the Akosombo substation fire, saying such an incident raises serious concerns about safety standards and operational oversight.

“A fire of that scale should not occur where proper safety systems and modern operational standards are in place,” the statement noted.

As part of immediate measures, ACEP called on authorities to publish a reliable load-shedding timetable to enable households and businesses to plan effectively.

It also urged system operators to provide a clear timeline for restoring full power supply, while calling on the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to exercise its oversight mandate by conducting an independent investigation into both the fire incident and the broader power crisis.

The organisation further demanded full public disclosure of all investigation findings, including any evidence of misconduct or systemic failure, to ensure accountability and restore public trust in the energy sector.

I empathise with you; we’ll rise above this – Energy Minister tells Ghanaians amidst power outages https://www.adomonline.com/i-empathise-with-you-well-rise-above-this-energy-minister-tells-ghanaians-amidst-power-outages/ Mon, 27 Apr 2026 16:05:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656192 The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Jinapor, has assured Ghanaians that government is actively working to resolve recent power supply challenges that have led to outages across the country.

He emphasized that restoring stable and reliable electricity remains a key priority, stressing government’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted power for all citizens.

Dr. Jinapor acknowledged the inconvenience caused, saying the administration deeply empathizes with the public as efforts continue to stabilize the situation.

Addressing a press conference in Accra on Monday, April 27, he announced that two generation units at the Akosombo Dam have been restored, adding about 280MW to the national grid.

“I am determined to work with the team to overcome these challenges. Despite the loss of Akosombo, all the other plants are running, but it leaves a major deficit. I wish to assure you that I deeply empathize with you. We never saw it coming, we never anticipated, but we will rise above this,” he stated.

He further noted that a third unit is expected to be operational soon, contributing an additional 140MW, with all six units projected to be back online by the end of the week.

“The first generation unit was successfully installed yesterday. The second unit has also been brought and is generating power. The third unit is undergoing installation,” he added.

In a statement, the Command strongly refuted claims that three out of six inmates who escaped from the Adabraka District Police custody on April 26, 2026, had any involvement in the said murder case.

It clarified that none of the escapees were ever detained at the Adabraka Police Station in relation to the incident, stressing that they are not linked in any way to the investigation.

Meanwhile, the Police confirmed that swift operational action has led to the re-arrest of three of the six escapees, while efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend the remaining three.

The Command also disclosed that a full-scale investigation has been launched into the circumstances that led to the escape from custody.

Reassuring the public, the Police reiterated their commitment to law and order and urged anyone with credible information on the whereabouts of the remaining fugitives to report to the nearest police station.

It’s knee-jerk – Titus Glover slams directive for GRIDCo CEO to step aside https://www.adomonline.com/its-knee-jerk-titus-glover-slams-directive-for-gridco-ceo-to-step-aside/ Mon, 27 Apr 2026 12:07:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2656033 Former Greater Accra Regional Minister and Tema East MP, Titus Glover, has criticised the directive by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, asking the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Ing. Mark Awuah Baah, to step aside, describing it as a “knee-jerk reaction.”

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Glover questioned the basis for the decision, especially as investigations into the Akosombo substation fire are still ongoing.

“This is a knee-jerk reaction. This is someone who is due for pension in June and will proceed on leave prior to that. Why can’t we look at the issue going on and deal with the problem?” he questioned.

Mr. Glover maintained that, from a layman’s perspective, the fire outbreak at the Akosombo Substation appeared to be accidental.

“From a layman’s point of view, the fire outbreak at Akosombo was an accident and they are working to resolve the issue. If there is evidential proof that some people are sabotaging efforts, then we can hold them on. But we shouldn’t act based on gossip and speculation,” he stated.

The fire, which damaged critical infrastructure at the facility, led to widespread power outages across the country and forced authorities to shut down operations at the Akosombo Dam.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage, but the Minister’s directive is aimed at ensuring a transparent and independent probe.

In a related development, there has also been a reshuffle in the Ashanti Regional leadership of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as part of efforts to improve efficiency and strengthen power distribution as challenges persist within the sector.

However, Mr. Glover argued that leadership changes alone may not address the root cause of the crisis.

“Why can’t we look at the issue going on and deal with the problem? These people who are being sacked, are they the cause of the problem? I need some education,” he added.

Pythons take over transformer as ECG staff risk life to restore power in Ahodwo https://www.adomonline.com/pythons-take-over-transformer-as-ecg-staff-risk-life-to-restore-power-in-ahodwo/ Mon, 27 Apr 2026 06:42:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655877 Engineers of the Electricity Company of Ghana in the Ashanti region have defied a python invasion at one of their substations at Ahodwo to restore power to residents.

At about 9 am on Wednesday, 24th April, 2026, residents along the Ahodwo-Daban-Dr. Asafo Adjei Road were plunged into an outage following a fault on the distribution line (feeder) serving the enclave.

The fault team of the Ahinsan District of ECG was dispatched to investigate the cause of the outage and restore power to affected residents.

The team managed to restore power to a section of the affected households, except for residents around the Cocoa Depot and Star Sawmill companies along the stretch.

The team, in a desperate attempt to resolve the challenge, proceeded to a nearby transformer to replace its fuse.

Upon arriving at the site, the team sighted a python that had taken over the substation.

The Ahinsan District Engineer, Kwaku Appiah, who confirmed the development to Myjoyonline, says attempts by residents to capture the python proved futile.

The python crawled beneath the substation to hide, as the team risked their lives to quickly replace the fuse and restore power.

The Kumasi Zoo was contacted to assist with the capture. The officers, in an attempt to seize the first snake, sighted another.

The reptiles are believed to have been inhabiting the substation for weeks, as they and their eggs were also retrieved about 9:00 pm on the same day.

ECG General Manager for the Ashanti West Region, George Amoah, is advising customers to report all outages via ECG channels or to use ECG stakeholders’ WhatsApp platforms to ensure prompt resolution.

I hold nothing against Mary Awusi; she has made me more popular – Apostle Eric Nyamekye https://www.adomonline.com/i-hold-nothing-against-mary-awusi-she-has-made-me-more-popular-apostle-eric-nyamekye/ Sun, 26 Apr 2026 15:54:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655792 The Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, has sought to calm tensions following a recent controversy involving the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr Mary Awusi, stating that the incident has rather increased the church’s visibility.

The backlash was triggered after Dr Awusi responded sharply to concerns raised by the church leader over the environmental impact of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

In response to the uproar, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah issued a public apology on behalf of Dr Awusi during his birthday thanksgiving service at the Pentecost International Worship Centre (PIWC), Trasacco, on Sunday, April 26, describing the remarks as a “slip” and appealing for calm.

Addressing the matter, Apostle Nyamekye said he holds no grudge and does not intend to escalate the issue.

“As for this lady, she has made me more popular. People like that I don’t think about because she has made my church and myself more popular,” he remarked.

He emphasised that differing opinions are part of public discourse and should not lead to prolonged disputes.

“If I held anything against her, I would have spoken about it at length. I think we all have our opinions on issues, so let’s forget about this issue,” he added.

Mr Debrah expressed regret over the remarks, which were widely perceived as critical of the church, stressing that they were not intended to malign the institution or its leadership.

He delivered the apology during his birthday thanksgiving service on Sunday, April 26, at the Pentecost International Worship Centre (PIWC), Trassaco.

“A few days ago, one of our colleagues, Dr Mary Awusi, made an unfortunate remark that came across as being against you. On this occasion, I wish to formally extend an apology on behalf of all of us and ask that the entire church forgives us,” he stated.

The Chief of Staff described the comment as a “slip of expression” rather than a deliberate attack and appealed for forgiveness from the church.

“We humbly ask for your forgiveness and acceptance, and we continue to regard ourselves as your children in faith,” he added.

The apology follows public backlash after Dr Awusi criticised the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost over his stance on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Her apology comes after a sharp response she delivered during a radio interview sparked public discussion.

In an interview with Accra FM on Friday, April 24, Dr Awusi acknowledged that in expressing her opinion, she may have made remarks that were not well received by some Ghanaians.

She emphasised her respect for Apostle Nyamekye’s position and contribution to society, noting that rising to the role of Chairman of the Church of Pentecost requires significant dedication and spiritual commitment. She described him as a man deserving of honour.

Dr Awusi stated that while she was responding to comments made by the Church leader, she did not intend to offend.

“Maybe in the process of also expressing my opinion… if I said something that isn’t nice, I apologise,” she said, adding that her earlier reaction was shaped by her interpretation of his remarks on galamsey.

The controversy stems from Apostle Nyamekye’s comments during the Church’s 48th General Conference, where he highlighted the environmental and social impact of illegal mining, including its effect on religious practices such as water baptism.

Free Zones CEO should’ve been sacked for her comments against Pentecost…

“We’ll treat you as a politician next time” — Free Zones CEO warns Apostle Nyamekye over galamsey comments

Free Zones CEO should’ve been sacked for her comments against Pentecost Chairman – MP https://www.adomonline.com/free-zones-ceo-shouldve-been-sacked-for-her-comments-against-pentecost-chairman-mp/ Sat, 25 Apr 2026 12:28:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655624 Member of Parliament for Abirem, Charles Owiredu, has criticised the CEO of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr. Mary Awusi, saying she should have been dismissed over comments targeting the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Dr Eric Nyamekye.

This follows concerns raised by Apostle Nyamekye that illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, is increasingly disrupting both community livelihoods and religious practices in parts of the country. He noted that pollution of rivers has significantly affected baptism activities.

In response, Dr Awusi went on the offensive and asked Apostle Nyamekye to stay in the lane of clergy work, or else he would be treated as a politician.

Dr Awusi, however, apologised after a heavy public backlash.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, April 25, during a discussion on galamsey, Mr Owiredu defended Apostle Nyamekye and described the criticism directed at the church leader as unwarranted.

“What did revered Apostle Eric Nyamekye say wrong?” he asked. “He’s been very consistent on this matter.”

Mr Owiredu explained that the Church of Pentecost’s position on baptism is rooted in long-standing biblical teaching. “His church… believes in immersion, and it’s biblical,” he said.

He referenced scripture to support the practice. “If you go through the Bible, Acts 8:26 to 40… Philip baptised the Ethiopian official in a river. Jesus Christ was also baptised by John the Baptist in the River Jordan,” he said.

According to him, the concern raised by the Apostle about polluted rivers affecting baptism was valid.

“Now it’s becoming difficult because nobody would want to even drink these rivers, let alone be baptised in them,” he said.

Mr Owiredu took issue with the response from the Free Zones CEO, describing it as disrespectful. “We have an operative of the NDC, a CEO, come out and openly attack this revered minister of the gospel,” he stated.

“I thought that even by now, the president would have fired her,” he added, dismissing the subsequent apology as inadequate. “Look at the apology… an infantile apology.”

Mr Owiredu linked the issue to the wider impact of illegal mining on livelihoods and public health. He said communities like his in Abirem are already feeling the effects.

“I’m a Member of Parliament from a constituency where we grow cocoa and oil palm, and we are faced with this galamsey menace,” he said.

He explained that farmers are increasingly giving up their land due to economic pressures.

“You plant cocoa, and it takes about five years. If somebody comes today and offers you money to use your land for gold, why wouldn’t you do it?” he asked.

He added that falling prices and delayed payments are pushing farmers further towards illegal mining. “Oil palm farmers are prepared to sell their land… because they get money immediately,” he said.

Mr Owiredu warned that the country is “sitting on a time bomb” if the destruction of farmland and water bodies continues unchecked.

He also criticised the lack of action against individuals accused of engaging in illegal mining.

“The president said he knew people involved… the Attorney General mentioned names… up to now, nothing has been done,” he said.

On the health risks, he cautioned that no one is truly safe from the effects of polluted water.

“We sit in Accra thinking we can afford bottled water. But the food we buy, waakye, koko, gobɛ, is prepared with this same water.”

“The vegetables we buy are all contaminated,” he added, citing concerns raised by medical experts and researchers.

Mr Owiredu mentioned earlier warnings about a looming water crisis by Private legal practitioner, Kwame Akuffo.

“It’s going to get to a time where water will be like gold. People will come to our homes and demand the water we are drinking.”

“We need to sit up,” he added.
