New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Women’s Organiser hopeful, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has pledged to reconcile with Assin Central MP and former presidential aspirant, Kennedy Agyapong, if she is elected to lead the party’s women’s wing.
Madam Koomson said she does not consider herself to be in conflict with Mr Agyapong and is prepared to engage him and other aggrieved party members as part of efforts to unite the NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections.
“I don’t think I have a problem with Kennedy Agyapong. Hopefully, when I become mother of the party, all those who are angry, we will go to them. So anyone that has issues with me, I will go to them,” she said in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen.
Madam Koomson said her primary objective would be to unite all factions and individuals within the NPP and mobilise them towards the party’s return to power.
“I want our party to win the election, so whatever it takes to bring people on board, I will do it,” she stated.
She described the disagreements between herself and Mr Agyapong as an internal party matter that could be resolved through dialogue.
“It’s a house matter. We will speak about it and trash it,” she added.
The pledge comes against the backdrop of tensions between the two politicians during the NPP’s 2023 presidential primary.
During the contest, Madam Koomson publicly criticised Mr Agyapong’s candidacy and referred to previous comments he had made about the NPP.
Mr Agyapong subsequently responded by claiming credit for Madam Koomson’s past ministerial and government appointments and suggesting that his political support had contributed to her rise within the party.
Both politicians were also named in a January 2021 petition submitted to Parliament’s Speaker by a citizen, Kwasi Dawood, which called for investigations into alleged unparliamentary conduct and threats or violence linked to incidents in their respective constituencies.
Madam Koomson, however, says such differences should not be allowed to undermine the NPP’s broader objective.
She maintained that if given the mandate, she would engage party members who feel alienated or aggrieved and work towards rebuilding trust and unity within the party.
