The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has clarified that its planned demolition of buildings and other structures located within restricted areas along high-voltage transmission lines is a nationwide exercise and is not being undertaken at the direction of government.
Speaking to Adom News, the Director of Corporate Strategy at GRIDCo, Samuel Kwaw Acquah, said the exercise will be carried out across the country and is part of the company’s mandate to protect its transmission infrastructure and public safety.
“This is not an Accra exercise. It is a nationwide exercise, and it has nothing to do with government,” he said.
Mr Acquah explained that GRIDCo has been conducting public education campaigns to sensitise communities located around transmission pylons about the dangers associated with living or operating businesses within power transmission corridors.
He stressed that individuals are not permitted to reside, trade or construct structures beneath or too close to high-voltage transmission lines because of the potential risks to life and property.
According to him, the planned exercise is intended to remove encroachments and ensure the safety and reliability of Ghana’s national electricity transmission network.
He therefore urged residents occupying areas identified as unsafe to comply with the directives and relocate to safer locations.
However, some residents whose properties have been marked for demolition have expressed concern about the exercise.
The affected residents said they were particularly worried about the 30-day notice given to them, arguing that the period was too short for them to make alternative arrangements.
Some of the residents who spoke to Adom News appealed for more time and consideration before the demolition exercise is carried out.
