New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Women’s Organiser hopeful, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has expressed concern about the weakening of the party’s women’s wing, warning that the situation could affect the NPP’s chances of returning to power in 2028.
According to her, many women in the party have become dissatisfied with the way the women’s wing is being managed and feel they lack effective representation and leadership.
“The women’s wing of the NPP has become very weak, and some of its members are angry with the party. We need a woman with substance and gravitas to lead and win back their love for the party,” she said.
Madam Koomson said her experience as a former constituency women’s organiser had enabled her to identify weaknesses within the party’s women’s front.
“Because of my background as women’s organiser, I have realised that our women’s front is weak. The women don’t have someone that is their mouthpiece,” she stated in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen.
She said the party urgently needs a strong advocate for women who can listen to their concerns and restore their confidence in the NPP.
“We need someone who is a women’s advocate. Most women are angry at the party, and we need them,” she said.
Madam Koomson stressed the importance of women to the NPP’s electoral fortunes, noting that women constitute a significant proportion of Ghana’s population.
“Women form most of the population, and if we want to win, we need to bring the women who have left the party back to the party,” she stated.
She said the next National Women’s Organiser must be respectful, humble and capable of rebuilding relationships with women who have become disillusioned with the party.
“We need someone who is respectful and humble to be able to draw all those who have left back,” she added.
According to Madam Koomson, effective leadership of the women’s wing also requires the National Women’s Organiser to maintain close contact with women at the constituency level to obtain firsthand information about challenges confronting them.
“As a women’s organiser, you need to be close to the women in the constituency to be able to have firsthand information of things happening in the communities,” she explained.
She criticised the current management of the women’s organising department, saying it has failed to provide adequate support to women of the party.
“I believe this current women’s organising department is not doing well,” she said.
Madam Koomson cited an incident during the 2024 elections when she was allegedly attacked at Ablekuma North, saying the response from the NPP’s national women’s wing was disappointing.
“When I was attacked in Ablekuma North during the elections, the women didn’t come to my aid apart from the women in Parliament. The National Women’s Wing didn’t even say anything about it,” she stated.
She said such incidents demonstrate the need for a responsive women’s leadership that makes members feel supported and protected.
“These are some of the things you do to make the women know you have their backs,” she added.
Madam Koomson said her campaign for the National Women’s Organiser position would focus on rebuilding the women’s wing, restoring trust among members and mobilising women who have become disengaged from the party ahead of the 2028 elections.
