New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Women’s Organiser hopeful, Mavis Hawa Koomson, says she is yet to come to terms with her defeat in the 2024 parliamentary election, insisting she never expected to lose her seat.
The former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East said her decision to contest the National Women’s Organiser position was largely influenced by encouragement from party leaders and members who continue to have confidence in her experience and leadership abilities.
“I didn’t think I would lose the 2024 election. I still don’t believe I lost the seat. I just wanted peace, that’s why,” she said.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Madam Koomson said following her defeat, some NPP leaders encouraged her to consider contesting for the National Women’s Organiser position, citing her extensive experience in party politics.
“After that loss, some party leaders suggested that because of my experience in politics, I should contest the National Women’s Organiser. I could see people still had the trust in me, and I also believed in myself, so I started last year,” she stated.
According to her, she subsequently embarked on consultations with former National Women’s Organisers, who encouraged her to pursue the position.
“I visited all the past National Women’s Organisers and they encouraged me,” she said.
Madam Koomson explained that the role is not entirely new to her, as she previously served as a constituency women’s organiser and has remained actively involved in supporting the NPP’s women’s wing.
“It’s not new to me because I have been a constituency women organiser before. So it wasn’t my intention to go, but the encouragement and trust the people have in me is why I decided to go,” she stated.
She said her support for women organisers extended beyond her constituency during her tenure as an MP, noting that she assisted women organisers at both the constituency and regional levels.
“Even as an MP, I used to help women organisers in my constituency, the regional women organisers as well. I have helped the women’s wing at both national and regional levels,” she added.
Madam Koomson said her campaign is therefore grounded in years of experience working with the party’s women’s wing and her commitment to strengthening the role of women in the NPP.
