The Municipal Girl Child Education Coordinator at the Krachi East Education Service in the Oti Region, Benedicta Razak Sekina, has raised concern over increasing cases of child abuse and neglect in Dambai, attributing the trend largely to parental neglect.
Speaking in Dambai on the theme, “Amplifying Children’s Voices on Abuse in Ghana: Promoting Child Protection, Participation and Advocacy — Breaking the Silence: Empowering Ghanaian Children to Report Local Abuse Without Fear,” she said child abuse goes beyond visible physical injuries and includes failures to meet children’s basic needs.
Ms Razak Sekina noted that some parents do not provide essentials such as school support, food, clothing and healthcare, forcing children to live with others and engage in commercial activities for guardians or “masters.”
She identified four major forms of abuse: physical abuse; neglect, covering physical, emotional, medical and educational neglect; sexual abuse; and emotional abuse.
According to her, many violations occur in places expected to be safe, including homes, schools and communities, but remain hidden due to persistent underreporting.
She stressed that ensuring children’s basic needs and keeping them in school would significantly reduce the problem.
The Municipal Girl Child Education Coordinator urged children to report physical or emotional abuse, sexual abuse, exploitation and other harmful practices to the police, warning that such experiences can affect their future.
She also advised children to avoid social vices and negative influences that could derail their development.
