The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has urged residents affected by the recent floods not to expect food or relief items during the ongoing National General Clean-up Exercise, saying the initiative is intended to restore sanitation.
Mr Shaib made the remarks while participating in the clean-up exercise after a resident complained that officials involved in the exercise had not brought food or relief supplies for affected families.
Responding to the concern, the MP cautioned residents against placing unrealistic expectations on politicians whenever public activities are organised.
“We are always doing this to politicians, and when they take advantage of us, we don’t get it. This is about your life,” he said.
He explained that the purpose of the exercise was to clear drains, remove waste and improve sanitation in flood-affected communities to help prevent disease outbreaks and reduce the risk of future flooding.
The National General Clean-up Exercise, which began on Friday, July 10, forms part of government’s post-flood response following the devastating June 29 floods that affected several communities, particularly in the Greater Accra Region.
The exercise, organised under the auspices of the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee, involves security agencies, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), waste management companies and members of the public in clearing choked drains and improving environmental sanitation across affected areas.
