Gomoa Central Member of Parliament, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to intervene in the violent disturbances at New Winneba, which left three people dead and about 15 others injured.
The MP said he is deeply concerned about the incident and urged the police to thoroughly investigate the violence and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
“I am very angry. I am not happy with what has happened. We are going to allow the police to handle this matter, but the law allows us to defend our property. The police must protect the people,” he said.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, A-Plus alleged that a small group of people had taken over lands in the area and were operating as landguards, creating tension among communities.
“There are a few people who have made themselves landguards and are causing havoc. Everyone knows their boundary,” he stated.
According to the MP, he had previously taken steps to address the land dispute before the situation escalated into violence.
He said he wrote to the Lands Commission over the disputed lands and received a comprehensive report concerning lands belonging to Effutu and Gomoa.
“I petitioned the Interior Minister and he also informed the police to take up the matter even before it escalated,” Mr A-Plus said.
He expressed concern about reports surrounding the police response to Tuesday’s disturbances, claiming that residents who were demonstrating were allegedly unarmed while the police were firing guns.
“Today, the people said they were demonstrating, they were gunless; the police were rather firing guns,” he alleged.
Mr A-Plus called on the IGP to visit the area and investigate the circumstances surrounding the violence.
“As the MP for Gomoa Central, IGP must come here. The boys know where their power is coming from,” he said.
He further alleged that some police officers may be benefiting from the activities of the individuals involved in the land disputes, calling for a thorough investigation into the matter.
“Some of the police are benefiting from them. We will not allow it to go on. Those people who perpetrated this are walking freely,” he alleged.
The MP rejected suggestions that the violence was a broader conflict between the Effutu and Gomoa people, insisting that the dispute involved individuals he accused of unlawfully taking over lands in New Winneba.
“It’s not a fight between Effutu and Gomoa. It’s the few people who have made themselves landguards and are attacking and taking over lands in New Winneba, and the lands originally belong to the people of Gomoa,” he stated.
Mr A-Plus said he wants the law to take its course and appealed to the authorities to ensure that residents receive adequate protection.
“We want the IGP to come here. We want the law to take its course. If not, we will call every chief and declare government an enemy of Gomoa,” he warned.
He nevertheless urged residents to remain calm as authorities investigate the incident.
“I will speak to my people to remain calm. However, if the state doesn’t protect us, we will protect ourselves,” he added.
The Ghana Police Service has said it has brought under control violent disturbances that erupted at New Winneba in the Central Region on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
According to the Police, the incident occurred at about 10:40 a.m. when a mob of about 300 people, allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks, stormed New Winneba Township.
The group was reportedly from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze and allegedly attacked residents and vandalised stores and properties belonging to natives of the area.
The violence left at least three people dead, while about 15 injured persons, including a police officer, were sent to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment.
