The government is targeting the end of 2027 for the completion of Lot Two of the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Polimakom Road, Roads and Highways Minister Governs Kwame Agbodza has announced.
The 116.1-kilometre project, which began in 2016, has faced significant delays since QG Construction Limited, the contractor, abandoned the site in 2022.
Mr Agbodza disclosed the government’s renewed commitment to the project during a working visit to the Upper East Region as part of his nationwide inspection of road projects.
He explained that efforts were being made to settle outstanding payments to the contractor to pave the way for the resumption of construction.
According to the Minister, the government owes QG Construction Limited approximately €28 million, with the debt affected by the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme.
He said government was working to resolve the financial obligations and ensure the contractor returns to site to complete the road within the revised deadline.
Mr Agbodza described the project as a major priority because of its strategic location and importance to trade and transportation, particularly its links to Togo and Burkina Faso.
“Where it ends is almost like a place where we have a connection with Togo and Burkina Faso. It is such an important road for those who live here and are traders. It is priority number one,” he said.
The Minister said government was also determined to complete other road projects along the corridor that have remained unfinished since 2016.
He explained that the broader objective is to ensure that the various suspended projects along the corridor are completed by the end of 2027.
“The many road projects suspended since 2016 on this corridor, which are all part of what we are trying to complete, the idea is to get them done by the end of 2027,” he said.
Mr Agbodza said completion of the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Polimakom Road would strengthen connectivity, support cross-border trade and reduce transportation difficulties for residents and businesses in the Upper East Region.
