The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the provisional results of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
This was announced in a press release from WAEC on Friday, 4th September 2026.
According to the statement, this year’s exams recorded an 11.07 per cent increase over the 461,736 candidates who sat the exam in 2025. A total of 512,862 candidates from 1,022 schools sat the examination, made up of 225,270 males and 287,592 females.
WAEC revealed that some 5,049 candidates missed the exams.
Subject performance
Social Studies recorded the best performance among the four core subjects, with 393,918 candidates, representing 78.04 per cent, scoring between A1 and C6.
In English Language, 315,094 candidates, representing 62.40 per cent, passed with grades A1 to C6, while 55,940 candidates, representing 11.08 per cent, scored F9.
For Core Mathematics, 306,234 candidates, representing 60.75 per cent, obtained A1 to C6, against 74,692 candidates, representing 14.82 per cent, who scored F9.
Integrated Science saw 309,605 candidates, representing 62.08 per cent, pass with A1 to C6, while 76,136 candidates, representing 15.27 per cent, scored F9.
WAEC noted that performance in Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies fluctuated over the past four years, but English Language has shown a steady decline over the same period.
8,295 results cancelled or withheld
WAEC said 7,434 candidates had their subject results cancelled for bringing foreign material, such as prepared notes, textbooks and other printed material, into examination halls.
861 candidates also had their entire results cancelled for possessing mobile phones during the exam.
WAEC has also withheld the subject results of 957 candidates and the entire results of 270 candidates over various suspected offences.
The Ghana Examinations Committee approved these sanctions at its 42nd meeting on 7th August 2026.
According to WAEC, some subject results for candidates in 169 schools remain withheld over alleged collusion while investigations are ongoing. A decision on whether to release or cancel these results will be made by 30th October 2026.
The results have been hosted online, and login details will be given to heads of schools to allow them to access their candidates’ results.
Candidates can also check their results directly through the WAEC Ghana website.
Warning against fraudsters
WAEC has cautioned candidates and the public against fraudsters claiming they can upgrade examination results for a fee. The Council said its results are secured and can be verified through its results verification system, including its QR code, and urged the public to disregard any such claims.
