Three people have been killed in separate armed robbery incidents recorded in parts of the Northern Region over a four-day period, prompting the Police to intensify security operations along major highways and other crime-prone routes.
The attacks, recorded between August 29 and September 1 in Saboba, Tamale and along the Tamale-Yendi Highway, involved armed assailants targeting motorists and travellers and making away with cash and personal valuables.
The first incident occurred at about 4:00 a.m. on August 29 at Zagbeli, near Saboba, on the Chereponi-Yendi road.
According to the Police, four armed men attacked three people travelling on a motorbike from Chereponi towards Yendi.
The attackers shot and killed one male adult before taking three mobile phones and GH¢100.
Another robbery was reported at about 8:30 p.m. on August 31 around the UDS Junction at Dungu in Tamale, along the Tamale-Kumasi Highway.
Police said three armed men attacked motorists at the location and reportedly made away with GH¢700,000, a motorbike and an iPhone.
The most recent incident was recorded at about 4:00 p.m. on September 1 around the Kpligini Forest stretch of the Tamale-Yendi Highway.
The suspects reportedly attacked a passenger Sprinter Benz bus, registration number UW 125-18, and opened fire, killing two passengers—a man and a woman.
They subsequently fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money belonging to the victims.
The Northern Regional Police Command says investigations are underway into all three incidents as it steps up intelligence-led patrols and security operations along the affected highways and other identified vulnerable locations.
The Command has appealed to motorists, commercial transport operators and members of the public who witnessed any of the attacks or have information that could assist in identifying the suspects to contact the Police.
It has assured informants that their identities will be protected.
The Police have also advised individuals and businesses handling large amounts of money to avoid transporting substantial sums of physical cash and, where possible, opt for mobile money, banking services and other secure electronic payment platforms.
Persons who need to withdraw or transport large amounts of cash for legitimate transactions have been encouraged to notify the Police in advance to facilitate security arrangements, including an escort where necessary.
Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Wisdom Lavoe, has assured residents and travellers that the Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property.
He said the Police would collaborate with communities and other security agencies to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
