Speaking in a live interview as part of his engagement with delegates and stakeholders, the Ashanti Regional Chairman said his political journey has been shaped by resilience and a record of navigating difficult contests within the party.

“Trials have tested me, the NPP has trusted me, I am here to deliver results,” he said.

He reflected on his rise through the party ranks, noting that his leadership in the Ashanti Region has been sustained through three consecutive terms, which he attributed to grassroots support.

“I have never had the luxury of an easy election. Every battle has been hard fought. But those trials did not break me. They built me,” he said. “The grassroots made me. I owe them everything.”

Chairman Wontumi stressed that loyalty in politics must be demonstrated through actions rather than words, citing his support for the party’s leadership in previous elections.

“When the party chose Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, I put personal preference aside and worked for victory. That is what loyalty looks like. Not in words, but in work,” he stated.

He argued that the party’s challenges are not about lack of competence, but the need for stronger organisational leadership focused on winning elections.

“We don’t need more polished English. We need a working chairman. The NPP has no shortage of elites and eloquent speakers. I am here to deliver results,” he said.

Outlining his vision if elected, he said his focus would be on strengthening internal unity, rebuilding grassroots structures, supporting young activists, and leading the party to victory in 2028 behind Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

He also addressed ongoing legal matters involving him, saying they do not affect his ability to serve the party.

“Let me address the elephant in the room. My legal challenges do not disqualify me from serving. I respect the law. I believe in due process,” he said, adding that “history is full of leaders who were tried in the fire while serving their people. What matters is integrity. What matters is resilience. I have both.”

He maintained that his bid is driven by service rather than personal ambition, promising to be a hands-on leader who remains close to the grassroots.

“I’m not asking to be served. I’m asking to serve. I will be a working chairman. The kind who sleep in the constituencies and wake up with the grassroots,” he said.

Chairman Wontumi added that his leadership would focus on unity and discipline within the party as it positions itself for the next general election.

Savannah NDC orders immediate halt to early internal campaign activities https://www.adomonline.com/savannah-ndc-orders-immediate-halt-to-early-internal-campaign-activities/ Tue, 26 May 2026 10:31:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666196 The Savannah Regional Executive Committee of the National Democratic Congress has directed party members to immediately stop all unauthorised campaign activities for constituency, regional and national executive positions within the region.

In a statement dated May 21, 2026, and signed by the Regional Secretary, Salisu Be-Awuribe Issifu Esq., the Committee said it had observed a growing number of premature campaign activities by some prospective aspirants ahead of the party’s officially approved timelines.

According to the Committee, the early campaigns are undermining the ongoing branch reorganisation exercise in the Savannah Region, which it described as essential to strengthening the party’s grassroots structures.

The statement also noted that the activities are diverting the attention of constituency executives from the reorganisation process, which remains a key part of the party’s internal restructuring efforts.

“Such campaigns undermine and thwart the efforts of the Branch Reorganisation exercise currently ongoing in the Savannah Region. It also derails the attention of the Constituency Executive Committee from focusing on the Branch Reorganisation exercise at the Branches, a critical pillar of the party,” the statement said.

“The Regional Executive Committee, therefore, directs that all such campaign exercises in the Savannah Region must stop with immediate effect,” it added.

The Committee further warned that any individual or group that fails to comply with the directive would face disciplinary action in accordance with the party’s constitution and regulations.

It stressed that the directive is intended to maintain order and discipline while ensuring the successful completion of the branch reorganisation exercise across the region.

The statement added that the notice should serve as a formal warning to all party members in the Savannah Region.

2028 election: NPP Frankfurt Chapter urges unity, backs Bawumia to rescue Ghana https://www.adomonline.com/2028-election-npp-frankfurt-chapter-urges-unity-backs-bawumia-to-rescue-ghana/ Tue, 26 May 2026 10:07:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666189 The Frankfurt Chapter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Germany has called on party members at home and abroad to close ranks and unite if they hope to return to power in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking to Adom News, Michael Arthur, popularly known as McArthur, an aspirant for the position of Communication Officer for NPP Germany, said the party’s path to victory lies in peace, unity, and strong communication.

“Without peace and unity, it will be difficult for the party to win 2028. But with unity, peace and strong communication, the NPP will surely win, because we have a great leader in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” McArthur stated.

He argued that Ghanaian youth are currently “suffering” under the NDC government, which he accused of failing to fulfill its campaign promises. According to him, the NPP remains the only party capable of saving Ghana, with Dr. Bawumia leading the charge.

McArthur’s comments follow a high-level strategic session recently organized by the NPP Frankfurt Chapter aimed at reshaping and rebuilding the party’s communication approach ahead of the 2028 polls.

The meeting brought together party executives, communicators, and members of the Ghanaian diaspora to map out plans for reclaiming power.

The session featured two high-profile guest speakers: Nana Akomea, Chairman of the NPP’s Communications Committee and Senior Advisor to Dr. Bawumia, and Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu, former MP for Bantama and former CEO of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).

Both shared insights on effective messaging, diaspora mobilization, and countering opposition narratives.

McArthur expressed gratitude to all NPP members, especially Ghanaians abroad, who participated in the strategy meeting.

He emphasized that the diaspora remains a critical wing of the party and will play a key role in shaping public discourse and fundraising ahead of 2028.

David Hundeyin to release documentary on Tanzania election violence coverage https://www.adomonline.com/david-hundeyin-to-release-documentary-on-tanzania-election-violence-coverage/ Sat, 23 May 2026 19:48:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665377 Award-winning Nigerian investigative journalist David Hundeyin is preparing to release a new documentary examining how international media organisations reported the violence that followed Tanzania’s October 2025 General Election.

The documentary, titled What Happened on October 29?, seeks to provide what Hundeyin describes as a deeper and more complete account of the unrest that erupted after the ruling CCM party, led by Samia Suluhu Hassan, was declared winner of the polls.

According to him, several important aspects of the events were either overlooked or insufficiently explored in international reporting.

Hundeyin, who is currently based in Ghana, reportedly spent months investigating the incidents surrounding the election. His work involved interviews with individuals within and outside Tanzania, reviews of local and foreign media reports, and analysis of findings from the Commission of Inquiry chaired by retired Chief Justice Mohamed Chande Othman.

According to the journalist, the documentary presents evidence suggesting the violence was organised and involved both domestic and external actors.

He argued that the global narrative surrounding the events failed to capture the broader political context behind the unrest.

“The story that was told to the world was a simple one, but the truth is far more complex,” Hundeyin said.

“There were other actors involved, and other agendas at play.”

Hundeyin stated that the project is intended to encourage more African-led storytelling on major political developments across the continent. He argued that African journalists and content creators must play a stronger role in shaping narratives about the continent instead of relying heavily on external interpretations.

The investigative journalist is the founder of West Africa Weekly and The Spearhead. His reporting has previously appeared on major international outlets including CNN, Al Jazeera and The Washington Post.

NDC won 2024 elections because we made bold decisions – Asiedu Nketia (Video) https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-won-2024-elections-because-we-made-bold-decisions-asiedu-nketia-video/ Fri, 22 May 2026 16:49:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665132 Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has revealed that the landslide victory in the 2024 general elections was partly the result of tough but intentional changes made to its parliamentary leadership, which he believes strengthened the party ahead of the polls.

The NDC, in 2023, reshuffled its parliamentary leadership as part of a broader restructuring exercise that affected both grassroots and national structures. The move saw the removal of the then Minority leadership team led by Haruna Iddrisu.

Under the changes communicated to Parliament in a letter dated January 23, 2023, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, MP for Ajumako Enyan Essiam, became Minority Leader, replacing Haruna Iddrisu.

Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, MP for Ellembelle, was appointed Deputy Minority Leader, while Kwame Agbodza took over as Minority Whip, succeeding Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka.

Ahmed Ibrahim and Comfort Doyoe Ghansah were named First and Second Deputy Whips, respectively.

Speaking in a video from his Thank You tour in Tamale, shared online by Accra-based Asaase FM, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said the restructuring was necessary in the lead-up to the election.

“New things were emerging and I said that we have to change the forward line of Parliament, otherwise it will be difficult for us to win the election,” he said.

He explained that he took on what he described as a “coach” role in guiding the party into the election, even though there was initial disagreement from President John Dramani Mahama regarding the changes.

“You have elected me as Chairman of this party, I am the coach of the party going into the election, so let me make the changes that will win us the election,” he recounted.

According to him, the decision sparked tension within the party at the time and was widely misunderstood as personal conflict rather than strategy.

“There was hell and people started thinking that somebody who has been my friend for more than 20 years has suddenly become my enemy,” he said.

Mr. Nketia stressed that the move was purely strategic and aimed at strengthening the party’s chances, not sidelining senior members.

He added that after the election, he advised President Mahama to include experienced figures such as Haruna Iddrisu and Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak in government, a suggestion the President agreed to.

Following the NDC’s victory, Mr. Iddrisu was appointed Minister for Education, while Mr. Muntaka was appointed Minister for the Interior, which General Mosquito, as he is popularly known, said helped reinforce unity within the party.

He also described the 2024 election result as proof that the strategy worked, urging party members to avoid factional politics and stay united.

“We went into the election, and we won. Have you seen such a victory in Ghana since the beginning of the Fourth Republic? If you are forming groups, Haruna groups, Asiedu Nketia groups, that is not our case. The NDC will continue to be one,” he said.

Peace pacts alone cannot stop electoral violence – Asiedu Nketia https://www.adomonline.com/peace-pacts-alone-cannot-stop-electoral-violence-asiedu-nketia/ Thu, 21 May 2026 19:45:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2664722 National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has stated that signing peace pact documents alone cannot prevent electoral violence unless offenders are punished and state institutions strictly enforce the law.

Speaking during his ongoing thank-you tour of the Tolon Constituency in the Northern Region, Mr. Asiedu Nketia defended his decision not to sign the 2024 peace pact ahead of the general elections.

According to him, peace agreements without accountability for past acts of electoral violence cannot guarantee peace during elections.

“The peace pact document was asked to be signed by all political parties before the 2024 elections to ensure that there would be no violence, but my position was that documents do not stop violence. It all boils down to the police, soldiers and the people to stop it,” he said.

He explained that his refusal to sign the agreement was influenced by what he described as the failure of authorities to punish individuals identified in previous election-related violence.

“A commission of enquiry came out, and people who should have been punished were not punished by the then government. That is why I opposed the 2024 peace pact,” he stated.

Asiedu Nketia argued that peace pacts would only be meaningful if institutions responsible for law enforcement and justice were fully committed to holding offenders accountable.

“So if the people who are supposed to ensure offenders get punished, like the police and judges, sign, then I will sign,” he added.

The NDC Chairman also linked the death of Haruna Shaibu, popularly known as Alhaji, during the 2024 elections to electoral violence in the constituency.

According to him, tensions erupted after some persons allegedly attempted to overturn election results through violence, despite the NDC’s victory in the area.

“The unfortunate incident in which Haruna Shaibu passed happened because they knew we had won the elections in this constituency and they wanted to change the results through violence. People stood to prevent it, and in the course of preventing it, that is how our brother lost his life,” he said.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia stressed that electoral violence will only end when perpetrators are prosecuted and punished.

“The only way to stop electoral violence is to punish the people who engage in electoral violence. No document signed anywhere will prevent electoral violence,” he stated.

He further cautioned against ignoring past incidents of political violence, insisting that justice must be pursued regardless of election outcomes.

“Violence has no expiry date, and so this matter of letting sleeping dogs lie is why the violence is not stopping. Justice has to be done,” he added.

Speaking during his ongoing thank-you tour of the Tolon Constituency in the Northern Region, Mr. Asiedu Nketia expressed appreciation to the people of Nyamkpala for their commitment and support before, during and after the elections.

According to him, the community played a key role in the NDC’s campaign efforts to return John Dramani Mahama to power and secure victory for the party’s parliamentary candidate.

“We thank the good people of Nyamkpala for your effort during, before and after the 2024 general elections. I came here with the team and we visited several places to appeal for votes to return President Mahama to power and also to get an MP elected on the ticket of the NDC,” he said.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia noted that both the party and residents of Nyamkpala worked hard during the campaign period.

“We did our best and I know the people of Nyamkpala did their best,” he stated.

The NDC Chairman, however, acknowledged the loss suffered by the community following the death of Haruna Shaibu during the elections.

“In the process, we lost one of our brothers, Alhaji Haruna. We are still pursuing that matter,” he said.

According to him, the people of Nyamkpala deserve more than appreciation because they lost a respected member of the community.

“The people of Nyamkpala need even more than our thanks because, apart from the campaign, you also lost a very good son,” he added.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia assured the family and residents that the party remains committed to seeking justice.

“So I am here to assure you that your son will not die in vain. We will continue to pursue the matter,” he stressed.

He further thanked traditional leaders and residents for their prayers, advice and guidance throughout the election period.

“So we want to thank everyone, including the Chief, for the prayers, advice and guidance,” he added.

The party members accuse the DCE of neglecting communities in NDC strongholds, particularly in relation to poor road conditions and what they describe as the exclusion of party executives from key decisions and development planning.

At a press conference, the Fanteakwa North Constituency Chairman, John Amoafo, raised concerns over what he described as worsening infrastructure and sanitation challenges in the area.

According to him, the poor state of roads has made movement difficult for residents and continues to affect local economic activities. He further alleged that party executives are often sidelined in decision-making processes, including issues relating to development projects.

He also raised concerns over the siting of the proposed 27-hour economy market, saying the decision has caused dissatisfaction among local chiefs and party members.

On the other hand, the District Chief Executive for Fanteakwa North, Osman Abubakar, has dismissed the allegations, insisting that he engages all relevant stakeholders before taking decisions.

He explained that the location for the proposed 27-hour economy market was revised by project consultants due to concerns about accessibility and poor telecommunications coverage in the original area.

Mr. Abubakar urged party members to remain calm, assuring them of his commitment to the development of the district.

The affected executives, estimated at about 180, allege that the process was deliberately skewed against them and politically motivated. They claim they are being unfairly blocked from participating and are calling on party leadership to intervene immediately.

According to them, the situation raises concerns about fairness and internal democracy within the party, warning that failure to address it could deepen divisions at the grassroots level.

The group is urging the national leadership of the NPP to step in and ensure a transparent and credible process across all polling stations.

The convener of the group, David Ofori Koranteng, has also appealed to the Eastern Regional executives, national leadership, and the Flagbearer-elect, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to intervene in the matter.

He alleged that their nomination forms were deliberately hidden during the filing process, which led to their exclusion from the album. According to him, some constituency executives orchestrated the move to favour preferred candidates.

Speaking during the engagements, Chairman Wontumi expressed gratitude to the two party leaders for what he described as their sacrifices and commitment towards rebuilding the NPP after the 2024 general elections.

“Our focus is to help rebuild and reposition the party strongly for victory in 2028,” he stated, while reaffirming his loyalty to the NPP and commitment to strengthening its grassroots structures.

The chaos reportedly erupted during the electoral process amid allegations of manipulation, intimidation and breaches of electoral procedures.

Eyewitnesses say machetes were used during the confrontation, while warning shots were allegedly fired to disperse agitated party supporters.

Some disgruntled party members accused the Member of Parliament for the area, Nana Agyemang Prempeh, of influencing the electoral album and allegedly ensuring that only his supporters were allowed to participate in the voting exercise.

Addressing the media after the incident, the aggrieved members called on the national, regional and constituency leadership of the NPP to immediately intervene to restore calm and credibility to the process.

According to them, the elections should be suspended until concerns surrounding transparency and fairness are fully addressed.

The group further alleged that electoral guidelines were flouted during the exercise, claiming the official voter album was not properly used.

They also accused organizers of allowing nursing training students and students from Tepa Senior High School to vote without adequate verification.

In addition, the dissatisfied members alleged that some individuals believed to be sympathizers of the opposition National Democratic Congress were permitted to take part in the election.

They warned that the developments could negatively affect the party’s image and weaken grassroots confidence in the constituency if urgent steps are not taken to resolve the matter.

The members also appealed to the party leadership to ensure peace, fairness and due process in the conduct of internal elections, while urging constituency executives and the MP to refrain from allegedly using “macho men” to intimidate party faithful.

Meanwhile, security presence in parts of Tepa was heightened following the disturbances as tensions among supporters remained high.

The aggrieved delegates, numbering about 77 from ten polling stations in Kwahu Obo, say they are unhappy with how the election arrangements have been handled by party executives.

Speaking at a press conference held at Obo, the delegates claimed they were not adequately informed about the upcoming elections and only became aware of the exercise at the last minute.

According to them, the late communication has left many delegates unprepared ahead of the polls.

They further alleged that several delegates are not even familiar with the contestants contesting in the election due to what they described as poor dissemination of information by party leadership.

The group expressed concern that the situation could undermine participation and affect the credibility and fairness of the election if immediate action is not taken.

The delegates are therefore calling on the Eastern Regional Executives of the party to intervene and ensure a free, fair, and transparent electoral process to preserve peace and unity within the constituency.

The appointment, announced in the party’s newly released committee composition document, places Akosua Manu among key figures tasked with shaping and communicating the NPP’s policy direction on gender, social welfare, inclusion, and vulnerable groups.

The Gender and Social Protection Committee is co-chaired by Member of Parliament Adelia Ntim and Dr. Susana Alo, with Grace Akosua Amoabeng serving alongside Akosua Manu as spokespersons. Ama Nequaye Tetteh has also been named Secretary to the committee.

Akosua Manu’s appointment is being viewed by party faithful and political observers as recognition of her impressive presence and activism within the NPP, particularly among the youth and women wings of the party.

Known for her strong media presence and grassroots mobilization efforts, Kozie has over the years become one of the recognizable young voices within the party’s communication structure.

Her inclusion in the committee is expected to strengthen the NPP’s engagement on issues affecting women, children, persons with disabilities, youth empowerment, and social intervention policies.

The committee is also expected to contribute to the party’s review of existing social protection programmes while proposing new policy alternatives to address current socio-economic challenges.

The reconstitution of the committees forms part of efforts by the opposition NPP to reorganize and reposition itself following the outcome of the 2024 general elections. Party leadership says the committees will serve as platforms for policy formulation, stakeholder engagement, and strategic communication on national issues.

According to the statement, Frank Bannor and Issah Fuseini have been appointed as spokespersons for the committee.

They are expected to support the dissemination of the committee’s views and engagements on economic and financial issues affecting the country.

2028 election: Global InfoAnalytics poll projects Ato Forson ahead of Bawumia, Asiedu Nketia https://www.adomonline.com/2028-election-global-infoanalytics-poll-projects-ato-forson-ahead-of-bawumia-asiedu-nketia/ Tue, 05 May 2026 09:43:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2658679 A new Global InfoAnalytics poll has placed Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson well ahead of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in a simulated 2028 presidential race.

The March 2026 tracking survey indicates that Dr Forson would secure 55% of the vote in a multi-candidate contest, compared to 37% for Dr Bawumia, representing an 18-point lead.

The margin is wider than what was recorded in the 2024 general elections and also surpasses the performance of National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia.

Lead pollster Mussa Dankwah said the results point to the continued strength of the NDC among its core supporters.

He also noted that voting patterns among those who did not participate in the 2024 elections could further complicate the NPP’s prospects.

“The data reflects the NDC’s dominance with its core support, while absentee voter patterns present additional risks for the NPP beyond the headline numbers,” he said.

In a separate head-to-head scenario, Mr Asiedu Nketia also leads Dr Bawumia, polling 51% to 39%, giving him a 12-point advantage. However, that gap is narrower than Dr Forson’s lead in the same survey.

Overall, the findings suggest both leading NDC figures are currently ahead of the NPP’s expected flagbearer by what analysts describe as comfortable margins at this stage of the political cycle.

For context, President John Mahama defeated Dr Bawumia in the 2024 elections by 15 percentage points, winning 56% of the vote to Bawumia’s 41%. The latest projections suggest Dr Forson would exceed that margin if a similar contest were held today, while Mr Asiedu Nketia would come close but fall slightly short.

Other candidates in the 2024 race recorded minimal support in the simulation. Alan Kyerematen, running as an independent under the Movement for Change, polled 3% in the Forson scenario and 4% in the Asiedu Nketia matchup. Nana Kwame Bediako followed with 2% and 3% respectively.

The poll is part of Global Info Analytics’ ongoing national tracking series, which has consistently ranked Dr Forson and Mr Asiedu Nketia as strong contenders within the NDC, although the party is yet to open nominations for its 2028 primaries.

Dr Bawumia, who led the NPP in 2024, is widely expected to represent the party again in 2028.

2028 election: Why choosing Mahama’s successor won’t be difficult – Ahmed Ibrahim explains https://www.adomonline.com/2028-election-why-choosing-mahamas-successor-wont-be-difficult-ahmed-ibrahim-explains/ Tue, 21 Apr 2026 16:32:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654140 Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has declared that selecting a successor to President John Dramani Mahama for the 2028 election will not be a challenge for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to Mr. Ibrahim, who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Banda, the NDC has a strong pool of capable leaders being groomed within government.

Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam, he argued that the current administration is deliberately building a legacy that extends beyond President Mahama’s tenure.

“It is because of the work President Mahama is doing, that is why he wants to leave a legacy, so his party remains in power,” he stated.

He further suggested that President Mahama’s influence is likely to extend beyond Ghana after his tenure in office.

“He will be a continental president; he will go into the highest realm outside Ghana,” he said, suggesting the President could take up a significant international role.

Ahmed Ibrahim pointed to a decline in Ghana’s representation on the global stage, referencing figures such as Kofi Annan and Mohamed Ibn Chambas.

“After Ibn Chambas, Kofi Annan, Alex Kweku (Kwetey) and the rest, we don’t have a lot of Ghanaians at the international front,” he noted, adding, “It is recently that Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey went to the Commonwealth.”

He believes President Mahama could soon join that league of internationally recognised Ghanaian statesmen.

Drawing an analogy, he said: “When we were in school and used to go for interco, you may see someone and think he will be the best jumper, but he ends up disappointing. The real jumpers will cross the mark.”

He insisted that within the current government, there are several individuals capable of stepping up, stressing that the NDC is well-positioned for the future.

“So, choosing Mahama’s successor will not be difficult. The kind of leadership we have at Cabinet and the training he is giving us, we have a pool of people to succeed him,” he stressed.

A recent poll by Global InfoAnalytics showed that NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia continues to lead in what is described as a “top-of-the-mind” baseline assessment of potential candidates.

Asiedu Nketia secured 29% support, followed by Finance Minister and Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam MP Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson with 19%, while Tamale South MP and Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu garnered 11%.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang each recorded 8% in the survey.

Democracy in Ghana now a commodity, driven by vote buying and poverty – Prof Alhassan https://www.adomonline.com/democracy-in-ghana-now-a-commodity-driven-by-vote-buying-and-poverty-prof-alhassan/ Sat, 28 Mar 2026 19:19:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2645428 The Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Professor Eliasu Alhassan, has warned that democracy in Ghana is increasingly being reduced to a commodity, with political power influenced by money rather than the will of the people.

He made the remarks during JoyNews Impact Makers Foundation’s programme dubbed “Democracy is not for sale” held in Tamale on Friday, March 27.

The initiative forms part of efforts to spark national conversations on vote buying and electoral reforms.

Speaking at the event, Prof Alhassan expressed concern about the growing influence of money in Ghana’s political process.

“The monetisation of our politics nowadays is becoming unbearable,” he said, adding that the trend has distorted the core principles of democracy.

He explained that while democracy is founded on participation, the rule of law and equality, the current situation reflects a worrying shift.

“Democracy has to do with the people actively participating in the governance of their country. There must be rule of law… equality before the law… and the protection of fundamental human rights,” he noted.

According to him, although democracy is not meant to be bought, the reality on the ground tells a different story.

“It isn’t for sale in principle, but in reality, monetisation has made democracy for sale,” he said.

Prof Alhassan pointed to vote buying as a key factor, arguing that politicians often take advantage of poverty to influence voters’ choices.

“Politicians have actually hidden under a certain cover, and that is poverty, by forcing people, taking the people’s decisions,” he explained.

He said when voters accept money in exchange for votes, they effectively lose their right to make independent decisions.

“When you give money and the person votes for you, indirectly you have taken the decision that the person should have taken with his conscience,” he added.

The sociology professor further noted that the situation is more pronounced in rural communities, where economic hardship makes voters more vulnerable.

“Because of the poverty situation in Ghana, especially in the rural communities, politicians have actually relied on that,” he said.

He described the trend as a dangerous shift where political power is determined by financial strength rather than merit or policies.

“The whole system has been monetised or commodified where politicians have to buy people’s decisions to become either MPs or the president,” he said.

Prof Alhassan also highlighted the role of inequality and education in shaping voter behaviour. He said people with higher levels of education are less likely to sell their votes.

“There are a lot of people who will never allow themselves to be bought… especially those who have the education,” he said.

However, he said that illiteracy and lack of awareness continue to make some voters easy targets.

“Some people even voluntarily sell their votes simply because they are ignorant about what is happening in their country,” he added.

He warned that such practices undermine the very essence of democracy and weaken public trust in the electoral process.

“If a politician comes with money to buy your vote, don’t forget that the person is buying your decision to make the government,” he said.

Prof Alhassan urged political leaders to focus on policies and engagement rather than inducements, stressing that democracy must be protected.

“Politicians are supposed to tell the people what they can bring on board… not to influence them with money or gifts,” he said.

“Frankly speaking, democracy in Ghana has now become a commodity where politicians sell, and the voters also buy with their decisions,” he added.

Politicians capitalise on poverty to monetise democracy – Prof. Alhassan https://www.adomonline.com/politicians-capitalise-on-poverty-to-monetise-democracy-prof-alhassan/ Sat, 28 Mar 2026 15:36:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2645365 Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University for Development Studies, Prof. Eliasu Alhassan, says politicians are exploiting poverty and illiteracy to monetise Ghana’s democracy, warning that vote buying continues to undermine the will of the people.

Speaking on JoyNews’ “Democracy Is Not for Sale” forum Prof Alhassan said poverty and lack of education have created conditions that make some voters susceptible to inducement during elections.

He noted that while some voters, particularly the educated, resist such practices, others willingly exchange their votes for money due to limited awareness.

“Politicians have capitalised on poverty and illiteracy. Some people even voluntarily sell their votes simply because they do not understand what is at stake,” he said.

According to him, accepting money in exchange for votes effectively hands over citizens’ decision-making power.

“If a politician gives you money to buy your vote, they are buying your decision to choose a government. Once you take the money and vote for them, you have sold your right to decide,” he stressed.

Prof Alhassan described the practice as harmful to democracy and called for a shift in how political engagement is conducted.

“Politicians must engage the people, explain what they can offer, and involve citizens in governance instead of influencing them with money,” he added.

“Democracy Is Not For Sale” forum held in Tamale [Photos] https://www.adomonline.com/democracy-is-not-for-sale-forum-held-in-tamale-photos/ Sat, 28 Mar 2026 13:17:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2645177 The JoyNews’ “Democracy Is Not For Sale” forum held at the GNAT Hall in Tamale brought together key stakeholders to deliberate on the growing influence of money in Ghanaian politics.

The event, which attracted members from various political parties, persons living with disabilities, opinion leaders, and traditional authorities, provided a platform for open discussions on the escalating cost of political participation, vote buying, and campaign financing.

Speaking as a panelist, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Professor Eliasu Alhassan, warned that Ghana’s democracy was increasingly being reduced to a commodity.

He noted that political power was gradually being shaped by financial strength rather than the genuine will of the people, a situation he described as dangerous for democratic growth and sustainability.

According to him, the monetisation of politics risks sidelining competent but less financially endowed individuals, thereby weakening the country’s democratic structures.

Also contributing to the discussion, the Northern Regional Operational Commander, Richard Lantei Odartey, raised concerns over what he described as the rising tide of political activism undermining the rule of law.

He cautioned that the trend was gradually eroding respect for legal processes and institutions, posing a serious threat to justice and accountability in the country.

Mr. Odartey further indicated that some individuals ventured into politics primarily to shield their business interests, especially where such enterprises were linked to criminal activities.

He stressed that such motivations not only compromised governance but also deepened corruption within the political system.

The forum formed part of JoyNews’ broader initiative aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and safeguarding Ghana’s democratic principles against the corrosive influence of money.

Akufo-Addo to lead ECOWAS election observers for Benin’s high-stakes presidential transition https://www.adomonline.com/akufo-addo-to-lead-ecowas-election-observers-for-benins-high-stakes-presidential-transition/ Sat, 28 Mar 2026 10:30:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2645287 The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially appointed former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to head its Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) for the upcoming presidential elections in the Republic of Benin.

The mission, scheduled for deployment from April 7 to 15, 2026, underscores the regional bloc’s commitment to ensuring a transparent and peaceful transition in one of West Africa’s key democracies.

The appointment was confirmed by the Chairperson of the ECOWAS Commission in a statement released on Friday, 27th March 2026.

The April 12 election is set to be a defining moment for Benin.

The incumbent, President Patrice Talon, who has led the nation since 2016, is barred by the constitution from seeking a third term. His decision to step down after two mandates has been hailed by regional analysts as a vital signal for democratic stability in a sub-region recently rocked by constitutional overstays and military interventions.

Under Benin’s two-round electoral system, a candidate must secure more than 50% of the total votes to win outright in the first round.

President Akufo-Addo’s leadership of the mission is governed by the 2001 ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance. This legal framework empowers the observers to monitor the technical conduct of the polls, the neutrality of state institutions, and the overall environment of the election to ensure it meets international standards.

According to a social media update from ECOWAS, the mission’s presence aims to serve as a “catalyst for promoting democracy, good governance, and regional stability.”

2028 election: I’ll be the David to bring restoration to Ghana — Janet Nabla https://www.adomonline.com/2028-election-ill-be-the-david-to-bring-restoration-to-ghana-janet-nabla/ Fri, 27 Mar 2026 15:41:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2645115 The 2024 flagbearer of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Nabla, has announced her intention to contest the 2028 general elections, positioning herself as a transformative leader determined to “restore” Ghana.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Nabla said her political journey is rooted in faith and a firm belief that the country is ready for a new direction beyond the two dominant parties.

“PNP is here by the grace of God. We are watching events closely and trusting that God knows best and where He wants to take Ghanaians,” she stated.

Nabla criticised both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), arguing that despite changes in leadership, governance patterns have remained the same.

“Ghanaians saw the failings of the NPP and voted them out in 2024. The NDC is now repeating the same mistakes. People have seen it clearly,” she said.

Looking ahead to 2028, Nabla expressed confidence in a political shift that she believes will favour a third force led by a woman.

“Going into the 2028 elections, there will be a change, led by a third political party with a female candidate—and that woman will be Janet Nabla,” she declared.

She added that Ghana’s democratic history has been dominated by male leadership, often with outcomes that fail to meet citizens’ needs.

“Since the start of our democracy, we have voted for men and seen the results. It is time for Ghanaians to vote for a woman,” she argued.

Highlighting the qualities women bring to leadership, Nabla said: “When a woman is in the family, she ensures that basic necessities like food, jobs, and housing are provided. That is what is important for leadership.”

She also stressed the need for integrity and strength in leadership. “I cannot be a pushover. If we are voting for a woman, it must be someone with integrity, God-fearing, and confident to work. By these standards, Janet Nabla Asana is the best candidate in the country,” she asserted.

Reaffirming her ambition, Nabla said: “I will contest on the ticket of the PNP, and I am hopeful I will win. For the first time, I will lead my party into an election to bring liberation to the people of Ghana.”

Framing her mission in biblical terms, she concluded with a bold pledge: “I will be the David of this country to bring restoration to my people.”

You are talking too much lately – Mussa Dankwah told https://www.adomonline.com/you-are-talking-too-much-lately-mussa-dankwah-told/ Thu, 26 Mar 2026 13:01:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2644434 The Acting Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Jibil, has weighed in on pollster Mussa Dankwah’s work, urging him to maintain credibility while reducing his public commentary.

Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show on March 26, during a discussion on election polling, Mr Jibil acknowledged Mr Dankwah’s growing reputation, noting that his work has so far demonstrated credibility. However, he cautioned that the frequency of his public remarks, particularly on social media, could undermine the impact of his research.

“I think so far he has shown some credibility in his work. I will urge him to expand it. However, one thing I have a challenge with is that he is talking too much of late,” he said.

Mr Jibil added that while explaining research findings is important, excessive commentary risks diluting the value of the data, warning that constant public engagement could shift focus away from the substance of the polling.

“I am sure you follow his Facebook posts and those things. At times, I believe he should stay back and allow the work to speak for him,” he noted.

Responding to Mr Dankwah’s recent survey, Mr Jibil also highlighted historical voting patterns, arguing that the NDC has consistently performed strongly across regions. According to him, although the party often wins more regions in elections, overall outcomes are sometimes determined by numerical advantages in key areas.

Mahdi Jibil Acting NDC Director of Elections

His comments come after findings by Global InfoAnalytics suggested that support for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is declining, while the NDC is gaining ground among voters, based on early results from an ongoing March 2026 tracking poll.

Mr Jibil further alleged that figures produced by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in elections are often questionable, claiming that irregularities have played a role in shaping some outcomes. He maintained that election managers within the NDC have long held concerns about the integrity of certain electoral results, insisting that such issues continue to inform the party’s analysis of polling data.

Baba Jamal to be sworn in as Ayawaso East MP today https://www.adomonline.com/baba-jamal-to-be-sworn-in-as-ayawaso-east-mp-today/ Tue, 10 Mar 2026 07:15:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2638761 The Member of Parliament-elect for the Ayawaso East Constituency, Baba Jamal, is set to be sworn into office on Tuesday, March 10.

The ceremony will take place in Parliament and will be administered by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.

Mr. Jamal secured the seat during the by-election conducted on Tuesday, March 3, winning the contest on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The election saw several candidates from different political parties as well as an independent candidate competing for the seat.

In a Facebook post on Monday, March 9, Mr. Jamal thanked voters in the constituency for giving him the mandate to represent them in Parliament.

“Indeed, Allah’s ways are perfect. I am deeply humbled by the opportunity to serve, and I look forward to working together with you to build a brighter and greater future for the Ayawaso East Constituency,” he stated.

According to the official results released after the by-election, Mr. Jamal polled 10,884 votes to defeat his closest rival, Yusif Ali Baba of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who obtained 4,009 votes.

Independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda garnered 1,885 votes. Meanwhile, Ibrahim Idrissu received 43 votes, while Kanor David secured 104 votes.

Ayawaso East by-election was free and fair, but low voter turnout worrying – Asah-Asante https://www.adomonline.com/ayawaso-east-by-election-was-free-and-fair-but-low-voter-turnout-worrying-asah-asante/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 08:36:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637228 A political scientist at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah Asante, has described the March 3 Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election as largely successful, commending its peaceful conduct while raising concerns about the low turnout at the polls.

Dr Kwame Asah Asante, speaking on the AM Show, said the exercise demonstrated Ghana’s democratic maturity — but warned that the country must do more to engage citizens during by-elections.

“We saw a free and fair election — an election devoid of violence and any aberration that undermines free and fair elections,” he said.

“Security was also tight, and the voters themselves compelled themselves to go through the process to its logical end.”

The Ayawaso East constituency went to the polls to fill the parliamentary seat left vacant by the death of four-term MP Naser Toure Mahama, who passed away on January 4, 2026, following a period of illness at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

NDC candidate Alhaji Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed won the seat decisively, securing 10,884 votes — representing 63 per cent of valid ballots cast — against his closest rival, NPP’s Baba Ali Yussif, who polled 4,009 votes.

Out of 49,966 registered voters in the constituency, only 17,048 ballots were cast across 113 polling stations, with 16,928 deemed valid and 120 rejected.

The figures led to what Dr Asante described as a worrying trend of low participation in by-elections across Ghana.

“That tells us that as a state we need to up our game in that direction and make sure that we get people to show interest in by-elections — particularly people in affected constituencies,” he said.

Despite the turnout concerns, the political scientist noted that the overall conduct of the election was orderly. He pointed to the swift acceptance of results by all candidates as a positive sign.

NPP’s Baba Ali Yussif conceded defeat and congratulated Baba Jamal, while suggesting the party could capture the seat in future contests.

The winner, for his part, pledged to focus on development, declaring that “the resetting of Ayawaso East starts now.”

Dr Asante said the peaceful outcome and the gracious acceptance of results by both winners and losers signalled a mature democratic culture. “It tells you that we have come to the end of the show,” he remarked.

The Ayawaso East seat has remained a stronghold of the NDC since 1992, with the party winning every parliamentary election held in the constituency.

Tuesday’s result continued that trend, with the NDC retaining the seat.

Baba Jamal, a lawyer and former MP for Akwatia, previously served as a Deputy Minister during the first term of President John Dramani Mahama and was recently recalled as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria — over allegations of voter inducement during the party’s constituency primaries, claims that were later found to be unfounded.

The by-election was the second of the 9th Parliament of Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

I’m not motivated by material things; I’m here to serve – Baba Jamal https://www.adomonline.com/im-not-motivated-by-material-things-im-here-to-serve-baba-jamal/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 08:22:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637218 The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) newly elected MP in the Ayawaso East by-election, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, has said his decision to seek office is driven by a commitment to service rather than personal gain.

After casting his ballot at the Alhaji Iddrisu House 2 polling station on Tuesday, March 3, he told journalists that his political journey is guided by a dedication to the people, not possessions.

“I am not motivated by materialistic things. I am motivated by human service. And that is why I am here to serve my people,” he stated.

Drawing on his experience as a former Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Baba Jamal expressed confidence in his ability to replicate — and even improve upon — his past performance if elected in Ayawaso East.

“I’ve done it before in Akwatia, and I know I will do it better in East Ayawaso,” he said, describing the voting process as fair so far.

He urged residents to rally behind what he described as a renewed vision for the constituency, adding that the ultimate outcome rests beyond human control.

“As I said, God makes kings. So the percentage will be determined by Allah. We have prayed for a high percentage, but it is in the hands of Allah, and Allah will determine it,” he remarked.

At the close of polls on March 3, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed of the NDC emerged victorious, securing 10,884 votes to win the contest convincingly.

His closest challenger, Baba Ali Yusif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), polled 4,009 votes. Independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda garnered 1,885 votes, David Kanor, also an independent candidate, secured 104 votes, while Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) obtained 43 votes.

Ayawaso East: My mother’s promise fulfilled – Baba Jamal says after victory https://www.adomonline.com/ayawaso-east-my-mothers-promise-fulfilled-baba-jamal-says-after-victory/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 07:29:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637197 Newly elected Ayawaso East Member of Parliament, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, has dedicated his victory to his 93-year-old mother, Mimi.

Following his decisive win on Tuesday, March 3, the former Akwatia MP revealed that his mother had promised to ensure his return to Parliament — a promise that has now been fulfilled.

“I want to thank the Almighty Allah for giving us this victory. Let me state that I dedicate this victory to my 93-year-old mother, Mimi, for promising to support me and ensuring that one day I would go back to Parliament,” he declared.

He noted that for years, she carried the conviction that her son would return to the House. Tuesday’s result, he said, was more than a political comeback; it was the fulfilment of a promise.

“Today, her vision and wish have come true. And I thank Allah for her life, and I dedicate this victory to her.”

Though she stayed out of the political spotlight, Mimi’s influence, her son suggested, shaped the resilience behind his campaign.

Baba Jamal was quick to remind supporters that the win belonged to the constituency as much as to his family.

“I want to state that this victory is not for me, Baba Jamal, alone; it’s for the good people of Ayawaso East. I want to thank all of them for having confidence in me and electing me as their parliamentary candidate-elect,” he added.

The former High Commissioner to Nigeria was declared the winner in the highly anticipated election after polling 10,884 votes, defeating the NPP’s Yussif Ali Baba, who obtained 4,009 votes.

‘The reset starts now’ – Ayawaso East MP-elect Baba Jamal declares https://www.adomonline.com/the-reset-starts-now-ayawaso-east-mp-elect-baba-jamal-declares/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 06:39:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637165 Newly elected Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, the NDC’s Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, has declared that work to “reset” the constituency will begin immediately following his emphatic victory in the by-election.

Baba Jamal polled 10,884 votes to defeat the NPP’s Yussif Ali Baba, who secured 4,009 votes.

Shortly after being officially declared winner by the Electoral Commission, he described the mandate as a collective achievement rather than a personal triumph.

“This victory is not for me, Baba Jamal, alone; it’s for the good people of Ayawaso East,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to constituents for entrusting him with the seat.

“I want to thank all of them for having confidence in me and electing me as their Member of Parliament.”

The new MP dedicated the victory to his 93-year-old mother, Mimi, recalling her long-standing encouragement.

“Let me state that I dedicate this victory to my 93-year-old mother, Mimi, for promising to support me and ensuring that one day I would go back to Parliament. Today, her vision and wish have come true.”

He also acknowledged the support of his immediate family.

“I want to thank my wife here, my family and my children for the spirit of endurance they have shown since I made it my vision to return to Parliament.”

Baba Jamal further extended appreciation to the leadership of the National Democratic Congress, including the national chairman and general secretary, as well as the Greater Accra Regional and Ayawaso East Constituency executives. He also recognised supporters from Akwatia “who came in their numbers to support me for this project.”

He reserved special mention for President John Mahama.

“Let me also give a special thanks to President John Mahama, once again, for finding me worthy to go and work in Nigeria.”

Reflecting on his recent experience abroad, he said it had prepared him for the task ahead.

“Those few months that I stayed in Nigeria have added to my experience, which I am bringing to Parliament to serve this country better.”

Central to his remarks was a firm pledge to transform the constituency.

“I want to assure the people of Ayawaso East that the resetting of Ayawaso East starts now.

“We are going to Parliament. We are coming to reset the whole constituency and ensure that what Ayawaso East deserves comes to pass.”

He also commended the media for their role throughout the campaign period.

“I want to thank the press for your support.

“For all these weeks that you have been chasing and working with us — I understand that sometimes you followed us late into the night.”

Looking ahead, he signalled his intention to build a constructive relationship with journalists.

“I believe we are going to form a partnership with the press as we reset Ayawaso East, so we can work together.

“Please correct us when we are wrong, but do so in a good and professional manner.”

Ayawaso East: NDC is winning; NPP only came to escort us – Mustapha Gbande https://www.adomonline.com/ayawaso-east-ndc-is-winning-npp-only-came-to-escort-us-mustapha-gbande/ Tue, 03 Mar 2026 16:15:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637098 Deputy National Democratic Congress (NDC) Secretary, Mustapha Gbande, has expressed confidence that the NDC is set for a decisive victory in the ongoing Ayawaso East by-election, describing the contest as largely a family affair in the constituency.

In an interview with Adom News, Gbande noted that the voting process has been peaceful, with law enforcement present to maintain order.

“Everybody knows and understands that the Nima election is a family affair. So the exercise has been peaceful,” he said.

He downplayed the presence of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), asserting that the opposition was only there to “escort us” and did not play a significant role in the voting.

“The NPP only came to escort us,” Gbande remarked, adding that the police have been ensuring calm and order throughout the exercise.

The deputy secretary also encouraged voter participation, emphasising that by-elections often see lower turnout but remain important for strengthening democracy.

“By-elections usually have low turnout. But at the end of the day, the NDC candidate will be declared 80%,” he said, projecting a commanding win for his party.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, he highlighted what he described as clear signs of a change in voter sentiment, expressing optimism that the outcome would favour his party.

“Let’s wait till 5 p.m.; the Ayawaso East seat will change hands, Insha Allah. It is obvious we are going to win this election,” he said.

Baba Ali also urged constituents to cast their ballots calmly and in large numbers, appealing for strong voter turnout in his favour.

Reacting to a recent Global InfoAnalytics survey projecting a 75 percent victory for the NDC’s Baba Jamal, he questioned the reliability of the poll, citing events on the ground that suggest a different trajectory.

“Not long ago, you conducted a poll in Ayawaso here, and what happened? This is Ayawaso East. Here, the data doesn’t work in that manner. What is happening currently on the ground will prove that the data is clearly wrong. So let’s wait and see,” he stated.

He also described the voting process so far as calm and well-organised.

Speaking to Accra-based Channel One News, Mr. Nimako pointed out that the same firm had inaccurately predicted results during the NDC’s internal primaries.

“He’s the same person who predicted Baba Jamal would lose in the NDC primary. But he won. Who are the commissioners of his polls? For me, it’s neither here nor there. I can assure you that our candidate, Baba Ali, has been sold to the constituents; he’s known as the home boy and liked by all. Ask Baba Jamal his opinion about Mussa Dankwah, and we will take it from there,” he said.

The poll, conducted by Global InfoAnalytics between February 28 and March 1, sampled 972 voters in the constituency.

It projected that NDC candidate Baba Jamal could secure 75 per cent of the vote, while NPP’s Baba Ali Yussif is expected to obtain 21 per cent. Independent candidate Umaru Sanda Muhammed is projected at 3 per cent, with Ibrahim Iddrisu and David each below one per cent.

Despite the survey, Mr. Nimako insisted that the NPP’s campaign, driven by extensive grassroots engagement, would ultimately decide the outcome.

“We, the NPP, have engaged the constituents, we have sold our candidate to them, and we know that they are deciding in favour of him. He’s going to be the next MP for Ayawaso East. I can assure you that our candidate will come out victorious,” he added.

Speaking to Adom News while touring selected polling stations on Tuesday, Tanko Computer said feedback from the areas he had monitored suggested strong backing for the NDC candidate.

“We will hand the NPP a defeat they will never forget,” he declared, expressing confidence that the outcome would favour his party despite what he described as generally low voter turnout.

According to him, early observations indicate that the NDC maintains a comfortable edge. He also dismissed concerns about the independent candidate, Umaru Sanda Mohammed, a former NDC member, insisting that his participation poses no significant challenge to the party’s prospects.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Baba Ali Yussif, attributed the slow turnout to the Ramadan period.

He noted that many Muslim voters may choose to cast their ballots later in the day and expressed strong optimism about his chances at the polls.

Both camps remain upbeat as voting continues across the constituency, with party officials closely monitoring developments at various polling stations.

Koku Anyidoho applauds voting arrangements for Ayawaso East by-election https://www.adomonline.com/koku-anyidoho-applauds-voting-arrangements-for-ayawaso-east-by-election/ Tue, 03 Mar 2026 09:45:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2636901 Certified international elections observer Koku Anyidoho has expressed satisfaction with the Electoral Commission’s (EC) conduct of the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election, saying the poll management body is performing above expectations on election day.

Anyidoho, speaking from a polling station in the constituency on Tuesday, March 3, praised the EC, which he referred to by its technical designation as the Election Management Body (EMB), for deploying materials and personnel on time and setting up polling stations in line with internationally accepted standards.

“I’m happy,” he said. “The EC, on top of its job — when I got here, the material, the personnel already deployed; they are set up in good time.”

The seasoned observer pointed to two key benchmarks that election monitors look out for during polls. The first is the placement of the voting booth, which he said must guarantee voter privacy.

The second is the positioning of the ballot box — which, by international standards, must be placed in an open, visible area so that voters cast their ballots in full public view.

“I think that these basic things are standing tall as far as the EMB is concerned,” Anyidoho said.

He also commended the strong media turnout at the polling station, saying it was a positive development for accurate and credible reportage. He warned against commentary from those not physically present at polling centres, describing such contributions as potential sources of disinformation and misinformation.

The by-election was triggered by the death of the sitting MP, Naser Toure Mahama, in January at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

A total of 49,966 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots across 113 polling stations in the constituency.

The main contenders are the NDC’s Baba Jamal, the NPP’s Yussif Baba Ali, and independent candidate Alhaji Mohammed Umaru Sanda, among others.

A poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics between February 28 and March 1 projected Baba Jamal to secure 75% of the vote, with Baba Ali trailing at 21%.

Voting runs from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Security has been beefed up, with the Ghana Police Service deploying 80 officers to each polling station to guarantee a peaceful exercise.

Adenta Kumi pledges 54% votes for Bawumia in 2028 election https://www.adomonline.com/adenta-kumi-pledges-54-votes-for-bawumia-in-2028-election/ Tue, 03 Mar 2026 06:41:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2636805 National Youth Organiser hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi, has pledged to help secure a decisive 54 per cent victory for the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the 2028 general election.

Outlining what he described as a “Kyemp3 policy,” Kumi said the youth wing would partner Dr. Bawumia to deliver victory at the polls and would, in turn, expect meaningful inclusion in government should the party win power.

Adenta Kumi made the pledge while officially declaring his bid for the National Youth Organiser position on Monday, March 2, 2026.

He stressed that young people must not only campaign but also be given opportunities to serve, learn, and grow within government.

Drawing inspiration from biblical principles, Kumi emphasized that young leaders should be guided and given practical exposure to governance to prepare them for future responsibilities.

“The Bible says, ‘Train up a child in the way he should go, so that when he grows, he will not depart from it.’ We will appeal to our elders to give us opportunities to learn on the job,” he said.

Kumi indicated that his team would advocate for the appointment of competent young party members to ensure inclusive governance.

He also proposed the creation of a monitoring desk to track the payment of contractors and eliminate middlemen who benefit unfairly from public contracts.

According to him, empowering the youth with entrepreneurial support, structured engagement platforms, and transparent systems would rebuild trust and energize the party’s base.

Describing the 2028 contest as a defining moment, he assured supporters that the youth wing would pursue what he called “relentless and fearless” mobilisation across the country.

“The people of Ghana deserve a revived party,” he said, urging members nationwide to unite behind the mission to deliver victory for Dr. Bawumia and secure a stronger youth presence in governance.

Announcing his bid, Kumi emphasized that the future of the party depends on reconnecting with young people and restoring their confidence ahead of the 2028 general election.

He noted that the outcome of the next election will largely hinge on how effectively the party mobilises and empowers the youth.

Acknowledging communication gaps that affected the party’s performance in the 2024 election—describing it as “a bit dull”—Kumi pledged to introduce innovative strategies to strengthen engagement and narrative control.

Central to his vision is the establishment of a robust youth secretariat anchored on research, job creation, and opportunity tracking.

He outlined plans to drive entrepreneurship among young members and launch a nationwide Youth Corps programme aimed at skills development and structured political participation.

Kumi also proposed the development of a digital youth mobilisation app to promote the party’s programmes and achievements while coordinating grassroots activism across the country.

In addition, he promised logistical support for regional and constituency youth organisers, including the provision of vehicles or motorbikes to enhance operational efficiency.

Describing his ambition as “a mission to revive the party,” Kumi called on young patriots across the country to rally behind what he termed a renewal agenda.

He urged party faithful and supporters to join him in rebuilding confidence in the NPP and positioning it strongly for 2028.

He noted that the expulsion takes immediate effect, meaning Mr. Mohammed will no longer enjoy the rights and privileges associated with party membership.

“It will take him about eight years before he can contest any position in the party. Even if, after the by-election, he decides to return, he cannot contest immediately and would have to wait until 2032. I am really pained for him,” he said.

Going Biblical, the General Mosquito, as he is popularly known, added:

“The Bible teaches that the message of salvation can seem foolish to those who have gone astray. Such a person is already on a path that leads to destruction and will ignore guidance. Only afterwards will they regret and say, ‘If only I had known.’ With that in mind, Umaru Sanda remains our brother, but he is no longer part of the party.”

The NDC had earlier, in a statement on February 17, explained that Mr. Umar Sanda forfeited his membership because his decision violated the party’s constitution and its collective choice to field a duly endorsed candidate.

The party has also prohibited him from using the NDC’s name, logo, colours, symbols, or any other intellectual property in his campaign or related political activities.

Your hypocritical stand was hurtful – Baba Jamal’s Campaign Manager tells Majority MPs https://www.adomonline.com/your-hypocritical-stand-was-hurtful-baba-jamals-campaign-manager-tells-majority-mps/ Mon, 02 Mar 2026 07:04:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2636492 Baba Alhaji Nuhu Khalid, Campaign Manager for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso East, Baba Jamal, has described as “hurtful” the stance taken by some members of the Majority Caucus over allegations of vote buying.

Speaking on Accra-based Channel One News, Mr. Khalid expressed disappointment at calls for the cancellation of the February 7 parliamentary primary and the disqualification of aspirants accused of inducement.

He emphasized that Baba Jamal shares a longstanding and cordial relationship with colleagues in Parliament and should not have been subjected to what he considers unfair criticism.

“Baba Jamal’s relationship with the NDC in Parliament is cordial. They have a very cordial relationship. Baba Jamal didn’t deserve what they did to him because some of them came to Parliament through by-elections, and Baba Jamal has been a pillar in any by-election that the NDC organised,” he stated.

The comments follow a public call by the NDC Majority Caucus for the immediate annulment of the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary amid claims of vote buying.

A committee set up by the party to investigate the allegations subsequently cleared Baba Jamal of any wrongdoing, effectively affirming his candidature for the by-election scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

Mr. Khalid argued that the posture adopted by some MPs suggested a moral high ground that does not reflect the realities of internal political contests.

“Especially when it comes to our internal elections, both the NDC and the NPP, we all have these things that we need to address. Instead of sounding like you are the saint, can any Member of Parliament admit that he has never given anything before he came to Parliament? That hypocritical stand they took was very hurtful because we knew the relationship he had with them,” he added.

Despite the earlier controversy, the campaign team remains confident, particularly after the party’s investigative committee dismissed the allegations.

Meanwhile, a new survey by Global InfoAnalytics projects a win for Baba Jamal in the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election. Conducted between February 28 and March 1 and sampling 972 voters across the constituency, the poll places him ahead of his main rival, Baba Ali of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The by-election is scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
