New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman hopeful, Awentami Paul Afoko, says he has no concerns that issues surrounding his past within the party will affect his vetting for the upcoming national executive elections.
Mr Afoko said he has a clear conscience and remains committed to the NPP’s return to power, insisting that his motivation for seeking the chairmanship is to serve the party and help it regain political power in 2028.
“I have no fears that issues from the past will affect my vetting. My heart is clean. God knows I love the party and I want to see us back in power and to serve our people,” he said.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr Afoko expressed confidence that the NPP can win the 2028 elections if members put aside their differences and work together.
“I am very sure that we can recapture power in 2028. If we truly unite and work together, we can do it. I believe and trust it. We just need to strengthen the party,” he stated.
He said one of his priorities, if elected, would be to empower constituency executives, whom he described as the people doing the difficult work of building and sustaining the party at the grassroots.
“We have to take power back to the constituency executives. They do the hard work,” he said.
Mr Afoko expressed optimism that with the right support and mandate, the NPP could return to government in 2028.
“I am sure if I am given the mandate, we can take 2028. I feel it,” he said.
He also revealed that he has already begun efforts to unite the various groups and personalities within the party ahead of the elections.
According to him, he has engaged the NPP’s presidential candidates, including the current flagbearer and former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, as part of his efforts to promote unity within the party.
“I visited all the party’s presidential candidates, including the flagbearer and former President Akufo-Addo, when I had the intention to contest. So I have started the unity drive already,” he said.
Mr Afoko stressed that the NPP must see itself as one family and avoid divisions if it wants to regain power.
“We are all one house. If we are united, we will be an unstoppable force in the party,” he stated.
He described the NPP’s current journey as a spiritual one and called for collective commitment from party members as the party prepares for the 2028 elections.
