New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman hopeful, Awentami Paul Afoko, has pledged to introduce what he describes as total discipline within the party if elected to the position.
According to Mr Afoko, the NPP cannot successfully regain power if members continue to attack one another publicly, stressing the need for unity, restraint and internal discipline.
“I will bring total discipline to the NPP when I win the National Chairmanship position. The politics of insults will have no place in the NPP. We are all members of the same party and the same family, so let us not fight one another,” he said.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr Afoko said his vision for the party would be anchored on what he described as the “three Rs” which is reuniting the party, re-energising its structures and recapturing political power.
“We have the three Rs: reunite the party, re-energise the party structures and recapture power,” he said.
Mr Afoko argued that discipline is essential to achieving unity and effectiveness within the party, comparing an undisciplined political organisation to a tug of war where members pull in different directions.
“We need discipline in the party. Indiscipline causes disunity in effort. The united, disciplined approach is to pull power to us,” he stated.
He said party members are already aware of his disciplined approach to politics and insisted that he does not allow emotions to influence his decisions.
“The party members themselves know that I am disciplined enough. I don’t act emotionally,” he said.
Mr Afoko promised that, if elected, his administration would enforce discipline while creating mechanisms for members to express their concerns without publicly damaging the image of the party.
“When you are fighting for power, you need to know your limits. Right now, where the party is, discipline is what we need,” he said.
He urged party members with dissenting views to use internal channels to resolve disagreements rather than publicly attacking one another.
“If you have dissenting views, we do it behind closed doors. You don’t wash your dirty linens in public,” he said.
The NPP National Chairman hopeful also said the party must reformulate its strategies to make it more attractive to young people and win back supporters it has lost.
“When I come as chairman, we will reformulate a lot of plans. We have to recapture the people we have lost and the youth as well,” he stated.
Mr Afoko emphasised that unity must remain central to the party’s efforts, reminding members that disagreements should not destroy the bonds that hold them together.
“Discipline requires that we discipline ourselves to say that the teeth and the tongue live in the same house. We are all in the NPP; we need to work together,” he added.
