Pakistan Parliament fights rats big enough to scare cats https://www.adomonline.com/pakistan-parliament-fights-rats-big-enough-to-scare-cats/ Wed, 21 Aug 2024 08:04:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2436680 Pakistan’s Parliament has a problem – and it is nothing to do with the politicians.

No, the problem besieging the building – terrifying new starters and turning its offices into overnight “marathon” tracks – is rats. Big ones.

The scale of the problem came to light after an official committee asked to see the records of meetings from 2008. When the records were collected, it was found most had been badly gnawed by rats.

“The rats on this floor are so huge that even cats might be afraid of them,” National Assembly spokesman Zafar Sultan admitted to the BBC.

The infestation is now so widespread that an annual budget of 1.2m rupees ($4,300; £3,300) has been dedicated to making Pakistan’s halls of power rat-free.

It seems most of the rats are located on the first floor – an area which not only houses the office of the senate opposition leader, but also hosts most of the political party meetings and standing committees.

It is also, perhaps crucially, the location of a food hall.

Rats are particularly prevalent on the first floor, officials tell the BBC

But the rats generally keep themselves out of sight – until, that is, people have departed for the day.

“When there are usually no people here in the evening, the rats run around in there like it’s a marathon,” a National Assembly official said.

“The staff posted there are now used to this, but if someone comes here for the first time, they get scared.”

Advertisements have now gone out in several Pakistan newspapers, in order to find a pest control company which can help officials deal with the rats.

So far, just two have shown any interest.

JJ Rawlings Foundation, family commemorate three years of passing https://www.adomonline.com/jj-rawlings-foundation-family-commemorate-three-years-of-passing/ Mon, 13 Nov 2023 08:07:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2318070 The JJ Rawlings Foundation and the family Sunday commemorated three years of the passing of former President Jerry John Rawlings, describing his loss as a “difficult pill to swallow.”

On Thursday, November 12, 2020, Ghana was shaken by the sudden demise of the former President.

“The shock and pain of the loss of a husband, father and champion of the masses was very heavy to bear and is indeed still a difficult pill for many to swallow,” said the Foundation and Family in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency.

“Today marks three years of the loss of a man who endeared himself to millions in our country Ghana, our continent Africa, and across the world.”

Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings stood for selflessness and a rare form of candour.

He was a strong man whose approach to leadership had redefined what “we ought to espouse as leaders regardless of our fields.”

The former President’s courageous hands-on style of leadership, juxtaposed with his understanding and appreciation of the struggles of the common man defined his raison d’etre right throughout his life.

As the nation marked the third year of his passing, he would be remembered as ‘a man of the people,’ the statement said.

Former President Rawlings was a soldier’s soldier; a patriot; a fighter for the people, who loved his country deeply.

He remained boldly steadfast in his position on political and social issues that affected Ghana and other countries within the continent.

As President and former President, he never paused in his desire to help the underprivileged or distressed as in the cases of Buruli ulcer in the 1990s and the memorable photograph of him standing knee deep in flood waters at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

“We cannot forget how one June 4 morning he cut short the celebration to visit the site of the June 3, 2015 disaster also at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle,” it said.

“As the JJ Rawlings Foundation and Family, we join all Ghanaians whose lives were impacted by President Jerry John Rawlings to celebrate his memory.”

The statement called on Ghanaians to revive the spirit of nationalism and love for country above personal pursuits and political bias.

Former President Rawlings stood for integrity, probity, accountability, equity, transparency and selflessness, it said.

It urged Ghanaians to reflect on his lifetime of dedication to those ideals and embody them in their daily lives.

“As we celebrate the memory of Chairman Rawlings, we pray that we will unite as a people to lift high the image of our country, pursuing Ghana’s socio-economic revival and development with selflessness and purposeful devotion.”

Receptionist-Turned-Sales Manager: The 20-year journey story of Multimedia’s Flora Lamptey [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/receptionist-turned-sales-manager-the-20-year-journey-story-of-multimedias-flora-lamptey-audio/ Mon, 13 Jul 2020 13:29:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1826250 “People have always asked me; why are you still with the Multimedia Group after all these years, can’t you change your job? My reply to them, as always, has been: my life is not just about changing jobs but rather, ‘fulfilment’, which I find at Multimedia.”

These were the words of Flora Lamptey, popularly known within the Multimedia Group’s fraternity as Mama Flo, as she took clients, as she sat with adomonline.com to give account of her 20-year journey with the Multimedia Group.

Madam Flora Lamptey is a vibrant and hardworking mother-of-three and the wife to Dr Kobina Darko-Annan.

She started her Multimedia journey as a receptionist who rose through the ranks to the current position of a Sales and Marketing Manager in charge of Adom FM, Adom TV and Asempa FM.

To catalogue her experience and lead all of us into her impeccable 20-year journey, she sat for an exclusive interview with Ghana’s most comprehensive online portal, Adomonline.com.

Mama Flow has attributed her journey so far to the Biblical principles taught her by her late grandmother, which she said had helped in shaping her life.

“I have come this far with the help of my grandmother, Dora Reindorlf of blessed memory. She nurtured me with biblical principles.

Flora Lamptey, one of the key people who birthed Adom Praiz

“She was my mentor and the single most influential person in my life when growing up. My grandmother made it her mission to teach me the Bible every single day,” she recounted.

Speaking on her career choice, Aunty Flora who has gained the admiration of many through her hard work and dedicated service to MGL, disclosed it was always her dream to be an Air Hostess.

However, she ended up as a secretary at Toms Telecom, a business communication centre at Darkuman as it was called back in the days.

“I bet if you were born after the nineties, you cannot relate with what a communication centre was; don’t get offended my Millennia babies. Hahaha that was just by the way,” she joked amid her usual broad smiles.

Flora was with Toms until she heard of a vacancy for a secretaryship position at the then Osu-based Groove FM where she was offered a job as the secretary to the CEO, Liberette Hesse.

Unfortunately, just a year into Groove FM’s operation, Flora will learn of a news that shook her: the station was being sold to the owner of Joy FM and was going to be renamed as Adom FM with workers’ lay-off staring her and other colleagues in the face.

“It was a tough and difficult time for us since we did not know our fate and it happened that myself and three others; Bosco Ocansey, Victor Senaya and Ken Addy were employed to work with Multimedia and that was how the journey started,” an elated Flora said.

To cut the long story short, Flora said she became the first receptionist for Adom FM which was then based in Tema Community 2 but had to make another tough decision as chunks of receptionists were laid off at a point in time.

Despite not being on the company’s payroll after the layoffs, Madam Lamptey, through the advice of a colleague opted to work at the Sales Department of MGL, a designation she noted was preferable to being unemployed.

“I just had to adapt and learn on the job till I went to GIMPA for my Marketing degree programme and MSC in Project Management,” she said.

After successfully completing her programmes at GIMPA, she was given the opportunity to market Adom FM to some potential clients, a task she said wasn’t an easy.

“God being so good, I had very supportive colleagues and managers but there was still a much bigger problem to be dealt with: Adom FM’s coverage was just within Tema, Ashaiman and its environs so how then do I market the station to someone in Accra,” she asked.

In spite of the challenge, Flora said she managed to get a few organisations who believed in her and the Adom FM brand to spend with Adom FM.

Flora remembers her first major client vividly and it was the company behind the production of Angel and Goodnight mosquito coils.

On her immediate family’s contribution to her rise, Flora acknowledged that her husband and kids have always been supportive over the years.

But, apart from her immediate family, Flora was full pf praise to the Chief Executive Officer of the Multimedia Group Limited, Mr Kwasi Twum who she affectionately calls KT as all others at Multimedia do, recognising him as a strong pillar in her life.

“The attitude of managers and colleagues over the years discouraged me and at a point in time, I made up my mind to quit the job. And although he [KT] asked me about it, I could not open up on the issues but he somehow got the then Chief HR, Jane Gyekye to resolve the issues. In all, I don’t regret having stayed at MGL,” she said happily.

“The work has been challenging but that’s what makes it fun and keeps some of us going; we set targets and when these targets are achieved, there is this bundle of joy.

Flora Lamptey poses with her Adom Kolor party wig

“There has been a lot of pressure from the job, especially when I was appointed Sales Manager for Adom FM, Asempa FM and Adom TV.

“It was quite easy just handling Adom FM and I had a solid team I worked with; we were called the sales force. They were two key people who were my lieutenants and we did exceedingly great.”

“Michael Enoku took care of Asempa, Fritz Kanyagui, Oswin Adjei Kwakye all served as Assistant Sales Managers and Mordecai Quarshie as Head of Sales for Adom and the Entertainment cluster who gave me the room to operate and at a point was adjudged the Best Sales Dealer,” she lauded.

“I never thought I could stay for 20 years but I believe my passion and love for the job has kept me. A lot has changed and I haven’t been doing the same thing; there’s been different roles, functions and increased responsibilities as I rose through the ranks,” she explained.

Mama Flo, among other things, also prides herself in being one of the brains behind Adom FM’s flagship programme, Adom Praiz which has been an avenue for believers to worship God since a decade and and more ago and still counting.

“The initial plan was to have a 3-day-programme to give people the platform and avenue to worship and praise God but it finally became a day’s programme and today it’s one of the most important programmes on the station’s calendar,” she said proudly.

“I have never wasted my 20 years as there was something to conquer each year and I have no regrets because I focus on and love what I do.”

“It has been about fulfillment and there was this recognition that I have been a loyal worker who puts integrity high, even though some managers doubted my loyalty [at apoint] but I never paid attention to them and I delivered as expected,” she bragged.

“I say a big thank you to Prof Samson Praku of Samara Company Limited, producers of Sasso, Fekko and Roma sprays; and End Point Homoeopathic Clinic, Dr Adu Boateng who have been with us from the beginning, Osons Chemist’s Mr Akwasi Osei Assibey, my client for over 15 years.

“Mr William Addo of Borges, Chief Marketing Officer of Multimedia, Ekyi Quram, CVD [Charles Vandyk], another great personality, Mr Nuamah Eshun Fameye, Head of Marketing at Kinapharma, Mr Ken Ashigbey  and Mrs Theodora Okine for believing in me and providing me with the needed training and mentorship.

“Last but not least, my father, Mr Lucky Lamptey, who was a salesman with GNTC until he became a marketing manager.

“He has been my mentor who always makes sure I’m on track, reprimands me when he has to and commends me when necessary.

“Finally, I will urge up-and-coming employees not to despise their small beginnings but always endeavour to grab every opportunity that comes their way”.

AWW anniversary: Shot victims give accounts of ordeal https://www.adomonline.com/aww-anniversary-shot-victims-give-accounts-of-ordeal/ Fri, 31 Jan 2020 18:07:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1747914 Two victims of the Ayawaso West Wuogon violence have narrated their living conditions following the La Bawaleshie by-election violence.

One of the victims, Yaro Isharo, narrating his ordeal said he was shot in his leg on that fateful day and harassed by the masked National Security personnel when observing the by-election process.

Revealing the post-effect of the life-threatening attack, he said the ordeal had affected his sleep tendencies as he can only lie in supine position.

“The incident that happened has really affected my sleep. I sleep backwards facing the ceiling; I cannot turn left or right,” he bemoaned.

That notwithstanding, he revealed boxer shorts and knickers have become his new wardrobe as he has not worn trousers and long-sleeved shirt a year after the attack.

MORE:

Another victim, Havi Nelson, giving his account of the violence revealed the security officials attacked him when he went to intervene in the situation.

According to him, in a split second, the personnel started beating him till he fell to the ground despite attempts by onlookers to rescue him.

“I remember hearing people trying to come to my rescue but it did not happen. As I fell right in close proximity I heard serious firearms discharged towards me and that was it; I blacked out,” he narrated.

He revealed it took him over 24 hours to come back to life after what he described as “state-sponsored terrorism.”

Havi Nelson hinted his ordeal has taught him to be ready anytime and under no circumstances will he walk to a place ‘blindfolded’.

They made these revelations at the first anniversary to commemorate the January 31, 2019 violence at the La Bawaleshie polling station in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency.

Pretty baby. The very thing that you mean to me, I doubt you'll ever fully understand. I don't like to share our best moments, because they belong to us – so people might never even know the level of your special. It's a really high level that is higher than other levels. No one is more in sync with me than you. I love how you're mindful of me. Nothing's perfect. Not even with your Ikotun background ??‍♀️ – but I love how you deliberately want to be better. You will see something inside film and ask me at 2am how you can be a better man for me. Lol. So cute a man. Before we said I do, 95% of the advice I got was "Endure". I was stumped cos I've never been able to relate. Endure? Forever and ever? Like till the end of your days? Lol. Quite rubbish. Thank you for never ever being someone I've ever had to endure. Don't like it much when people "couplegoals" us – cos as far as I'm concerned, we, i.e me and you, are on a personal journey. Our ups our downs (Olorun o ni je ka rogun down), our growth, our learning and unlearning, our Love (aww) is our story. Everyone’s standard should be their best self. Thank you for being someone that makes me want to be my best self. Moruf, thank you for Year One. They said it’s normally hard. Again, I can’t relate because I loved it. I love you. I pray year two is even better by God’s infinite mercy and grace and love. I thank God for standing with us and giving us sense. And I thank you for being a man that makes loving you worth it. My beautiful dreamboat. My fellow feminist boyfriend. My husband. Ife mi. Onitemi. The love of my life. I will continue to eat your work in the eye of carton. ? to all the forevers we will spend together. PS: Year two is one or two sentences. I have what I'm doing❤️. . PPS: Everyone, please whatever chance you get today, say a prayer for us. I love those ?

Former President John Dramani Mahama and former first lady Lordina Mahama celebrated 25 years of their union over the weekend in a beautiful silver themed ceremony at the Movenpick Hotel in Accra.
Attended by some of the most influential names in Ghana’s political class, former president John Mahama and wife, Lordina’s silver jubilee celebration saw many come out to share and congratulate the former first couple.
The touching of all, perhaps, is a message from the couple’s children, Farida, Sharaf, and Shahida. Farida, the youngest and ever the extrovert, congratulates her parents and points out that according to her, 25 years is really a lot, especially considering that she’s not even 10 years old yet.

Jumia named among MIT top 50 smartest companies 2017 https://www.adomonline.com/jumia-named-among-mit-top-50-smartest-companies-2017/ Wed, 05 Jul 2017 12:50:48 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=270661 Jumia Group (formerly Africa Internet Group), has for the second consecutive year been named in the list of MIT’s 50 smartest companies – 2017.
This year, Jumia ranks at position 44 as compared to 47 on the 2016 list, standing out as a company working to overcome the challenges of e-commerce in Africa. These include clogged roadways, skeptical consumers, and lack of internet penetration in some markets with a regional rate of only 27% among others.
Jumia Group is once more proud for the recognition of our persistence in fully harnessing Africa’s untapped digital potential. We believe that through technological innovations, we drive our commitment to inject feasible solutions into Africa’s economy,” says Jumia Group’s co-founder Sacha Poignonnec.
The MIT Technology Review recognized Jumia as the continent’s first “unicorn” startup, valued at over USD1 billion. Now operating various consumer web services including Africa’s biggest online shopping mall ‘Jumia Mall’, as well as ‘Jumia Travel’ the leading travel agency in the continent, the group aims at unlocking the spending potential of an expanding middle class which accounts for every 1 out of 3 Africans. Other ventures under the group also continue to lead in their respective sectors such as food delivery, real estate, logistics, and cars among others.
Estelle Verdier, the COO & Co-founder of Jumia Travel expressed her excitement towards the recognition saying, “it is an assurance of our devotion to make the impossibilities in Africa, such as providing affordable travel now possible through technology.”
‘’ Talking about our own achievements in such a challenging sector of development is one thing but being recognized by leading organizations such as MIT is a very enviable feat. This only motivates us to work harder in bringing innovative strategies and technologies to make the lives of all Africans very easy and comfortable’’ said Omolara Adagunodo, Country Manager of Jumia Travel Ghana.
First published in 2010, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Smartest Companies list of 2017 features other giant companies including Amazon, Alibaba, Facebook, Microsoft, SpaceX, and Kenya’s off-grid solar operator M-Kopa.
Best Regards,
