The world governing body and World Cup organiser has confirmed that it is in talks with national associations over improved funding, with the proposals expected to be rubber-stamped at the FIFA Council meeting in Vancouver on April 28.

In December, FIFA announced a record World Cup prize fund of $727million (£539m), with each of the 48 competing teams receiving a minimum of $10.5m and the winners pocketing $50m. Since then, discussions have continued with national associations with a view to reaching a resolution before the FIFA Congress on April 30.

On April 1, The Athletic reported that UEFA, European football’s governing body, was lobbying FIFA to increase World Cup prize money and overall financial support for federations competing at the tournament in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

UEFA was responding to concerns from several of its member associations about the substantial costs associated with these finals, including the price of travel, operations and tax in the U.S. in particular.

Top League Content

But FIFA sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity, insisted that the increase in prize money was not a reaction to UEFA’s lobbying, nor because the organisation had been put under pressure from elsewhere.

The sources said FIFA reached the decision independently – on the back of projected revenues of over $11billion (£8.15bn) from the tournament, which will run from June 11 to July 19.

FIFA is a not-for-profit organisation and earlier this month its president, Gianni Infantino, responded to criticism of high ticket prices at the tournament by insisting that all revenue generated would be returned to the game.

The increase in funding for competing teams comes after The Athletic reported on March 10 that FIFA had cut over $100m from its operating budget for the World Cup, with multiple departments at the organisation’s U.S. headquarters in Miami asked to make “efficiencies”.

These cutbacks have raised questions about the financial impact on fans and hosts cities, with many U.S. cities having already had to downscale their plans for the tournament over budgeting concerns.

The official FIFA Fan Fest slated by the New York/New Jersey host committee for Liberty State Park has been cancelled, Seattle has scaled back its plans, and of the other U.S. host cities, only Philadelphia and Houston are fulfilling the 39-day-long festival they originally signed up to organise.

A FIFA spokesperson told The Athletic: “Ahead of a FIFA Council meeting in Vancouver, Canada, on 28 April 2026, FIFA can confirm it is in discussions with associations around the world to increase available revenues.

“This includes a proposed increase of financial contributions to all qualified teams for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and of development funding available to all 211 member associations.

“The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be groundbreaking in terms of its financial contribution to the global football community and FIFA is proud to be in its strongest ever financial position to benefit the global game through its FIFA Forward programme.

“Subject to discussions, further details will be provided in due course.”

US rights groups urge caution for World Cup visitors https://www.adomonline.com/us-rights-groups-urge-caution-for-world-cup-visitors/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 07:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655360 Rights groups have urged fans, players, journalists, and other visitors to this summer’s World Cup to “exercise caution” if travelling to the United States.

More than 120 organisations have collectively issued a ‘travel advisory’ driven by what they say is “the Trump administration’s violent and abusive immigration crackdown”.

“The Trump administration’s rising authoritarianism and increasing violence pose serious risks to all,” the message states.

It adds minority groups in particular are “vulnerable to serious harm”, and is critical of Gianni Infantino, president of football’s world governing body Fifa, for his close ties to US President Donald Trump.

The coalition, which includes the American Civil Liberties Union, has called on Fifa to put pressure on US authorities “to respect the fundamental human rights of every person visiting and attending the games”.

US officials have not yet commented on the groups’ travel advisory, but Fifa says it is “committed to respecting all internationally recognised human rights and shall strive to promote the protection of these rights”.

Fifa said it has a “commitment to human rights across all key activities and actors connected to the tournament”, citing several documents and advisory groups it has set up to address human rights issues.

The rights groups warn travellers about what they say is the potential for denial of entry to the country and risk of arrest, travel restrictions on citizens from dozens of countries, social media screening, racial profiling, and increased surveillance.

There are travel bans on nationals from four of the countries taking part in the tournament: Iran, Haiti, Senegal and Ivory Coast.

The groups say travellers should take steps including removing sensitive information from phones and keeping friends and family updated about their plans when travelling.

The United States is co-hosting the tournament alongside Canada and Mexico, with 78 of the 104 scheduled matches at the tournament taking place in the US.

The signatories are critical of Fifa, accusing it of failing to issue “concrete guarantees” on safety for travellers “while its president, Gianni Infantino, has aligned himself closer to the Trump administration”.

In December, Infantino awarded President Trump with Fifa’s inaugural Peace Prize.

An immigration crackdown has been a key focus of the Trump administration, with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) having its scope and budget significantly expanded.

ICE has faced criticism for its methods – especially following the fatal shooting of two US citizens who were protesting against the immigration crackdown.

US officials have said ICE agents will be part of World Cup security. Earlier this year, fan group Football Supporters Europe (FSE) told BBC Sport it was “extremely concerned by the ongoing militarisation of police forces in the US”.

Last month, a report from human rights campaign group Amnesty said the World Cup risked becoming “a stage for repression and a platform for authoritarian practices”.

In response to that, the White House’s World Cup Task Force said that the tournament will be “the largest, safest, and most welcoming sporting event in history” and that it was working to deliver an event “that highlights America’s hospitality, commitment to security, and spirit of excellence”.

It promised that fans “can look forward to a smooth, secure, and truly unforgettable tournament”.

Fifa blamed as World Cup trains set to cost $100 https://www.adomonline.com/fifa-blamed-as-world-cup-trains-set-to-cost-100/ Thu, 16 Apr 2026 07:49:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2652265 New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill says Fifa is to blame for fans having to pay more for transport at the World Cup this summer – and that world football’s governing body should subsidise it.

The Athletic reported earlier this week that NY Transit is intending to bring in special event pricing for the 30-minute journey from Penn Station in New York to MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

A train ticket to the games at the stadium could cost more than $100 (£73.80) – a seven-fold increase on the usual $12.90 (£9.50) for a return fare.

No concession prices are planned, so children and seniors must also pay the full fare.

MetLife Stadium – which will be named New York/New Jersey Stadium during the World Cup as part of Fifa’s policy on corporate sponsored names – will host eight matches, including an England group game, and the final on 19 July.

It comes after train fares for matches at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, outside Boston, were vastly increased to $80 (£59), with coach tickets costing $95 (£70).

Sherrill insisted that taxpayers and commuters would not be left to cover the cost of transporting World Cup supporters to stadiums, with Fifa sitting on huge sums from high ticket prices for the matches.

“We inherited an agreement where Fifa is providing $0 for transportation to the World Cup,” the governor posted on X on Wednesday evening.

“And while NJ TRANSIT is stuck with a $48m bill to safely get fans to and from games, Fifa is making $11bn.

“I’m not going to stick New Jersey commuters with that tab for years to come.

“Fifa should pay for the rides. But if they don’t – I’m not going to let New Jersey get taken for one.”

BBC Sport understands that NY Transit will officially confirm pricing on Friday.

A Fifa spokesperson said that the governing body was “surprised” at Sherrill’s comments.

It said supporters were expected to be able to travel “at cost”, and that there was no increased pricing for other major events at the venue.

“The original Fifa World Cup 2026 Host City Agreements signed in 2018 required free transportation for fans to all matches,” the spokesperson said.

“Recognising the financial strain this placed on the host cities, back in 2023 Fifa adjusted the Host Agreement requirements across all host cities as follows: All match ticket holders and accredited individuals shall be able to access transport (public or additionally planned transport) at cost to allow travel to stadiums on match days.

“Moreover, Fifa has worked for years with host cities on their transportation and mobility plans, including advocating for millions of dollars in federal funding to support host cities for transportation.

“The Fifa World Cup will bring millions of fans to North America along with the related economic impact.

“Many of these fans will travel to NYNJ to enjoy the eight matches scheduled, including the Fifa World Cup final.

“Fifa is not aware of any other major event previously held at NYNJ Stadium, including other major sports, global concert tours, etc, where organisers were required to pay for fan transportation.”

The prices in New Jersey and Foxborough will hit England and Scotland fans.

The Three Lions take on Ghana in Foxborough on 23 June, and then head to the MetLife to face Panama on 27 June.

Steve Clarke’s Scotland have two games in Foxborough, against Haiti on 13 June and Morocco on 19 June.

The cost of parking at stadiums is also very high, with a space at the MetLife costing $225 (£166). Foxborough is priced at $175 (£129) for one car.

DR Congo and Iraq were the last two teams to book their places in the 23rd edition of the World Cup to be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico from 11 June to 19 July.

It rounded off a marathon qualification process that began in September 2023 and spanned six confederations before culminating in the high‑stakes Uefa and intercontinental play‑offs on 31 March.

The final four European teams were confirmed on Tuesday, with the big news being that four-time winners Italy were knocked out by Bosnia-Herzegovina. The Czech Republic, Turkey and Sweden also qualified.

DR Congo and Iraq booked their place with wins over Jamaica and Bolivia respectively.

Of the 48 teams participating, the three hosts qualified automatically while 43 places were earned via direct qualification from the confederations and two spots were determined by intercontinental play-offs.

With the full cast confirmed, attention now shifts towards the biggest World Cup staged.

How will the tournament work?

A record 48 nations – up from the 32 that featured in Qatar four years ago – will take part in the 2026 edition, making it the largest World Cup field, with 104 matches to be played across three countries for the first time.

It will take place in 16 cities – 11 in the US, three in Mexico and two in Canada – between 11 June and 19 July.

The tournament will also last a record 39 days – an increase from 29 days in Qatar and 32 in 2014 and 2018 – and a new format features 12 groups of four.

Mexico will face South Africa in Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca to open the tournament on Thursday, 11 June – 18 days after the conclusion of the Premier League season.

The top two teams from the 12 groups and the eight best third‑placed nations will advance into an expanded knockout phase that will begin with a round of 32.

The new world champion will be crowned at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on 19 July.

When will the games be played?

With games taking place across four time zones and at locations up to 2,800 miles apart, there will be a total of 13 different kick-off times.

That means for viewers in Europe, some games will be played from midnight onwards.

For example, all five of the group-stage matches in Kansas City will take place in the middle of the night UK time, with the earliest kick-off being 00:00 BST on Friday, 26 June for Tunisia against the Netherlands while the latest is a 03:00 BST start for Algeria versus Austria on Sunday, 28 June.

The San Francisco Bay Area hosts two games that will kick off at 05:00 BST – Austria versus Jordan on Tuesday, 16 June and Turkey versus Paraguay on Friday, 19 June.

There are also 05:00 BST games in Vancouver – Australia versus Turkeyon Saturday, 13 June – and in Guadalupe, Mexico, when Tunisia take on Japan on Saturday, 20 June.

In total there will be 35 group-stage games that kick-off between 00:00 BST and 05:00 BST, which is almost half of the 72 fixtures for that stage.

However, the most common kick-off time is 20:00 BST, with 12 group-stage games taking place then.

Who are the favourites to win?

European champions Spain are the favourites, having enjoyed an almost flawless route through qualification.

Their squad is packed with talent such as Pedri, Fabian Ruiz, Martin Zubimendi, 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri and Lamine Yamal, who is one of the best young players in the world.

Just behind Spain, this generation of England players is tipped to land some silverware, having finished runners-up at the past two Euros.

Thomas Tuchel’s team qualified for the World Cup with a perfect record, winning all of their matches without conceding a goal. They have a squad brimming with big names including Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane.

France are also strong contenders. Didier Deschamps’ squad have a fearsome front line, including Bradley Barcola, Michael Olise, Kylian Mbappe and Hugo Ekitike, and the 2022 runners-up were unbeaten in European qualifying.

Defending World Cup champions Argentina won the South American qualifying group by a big margin, finishing nine points ahead of second-placed Ecuador.

With two Copa Americas and one World Cup win in just four years, the Albiceleste are looking strong.

Finally, despitean underwhelming qualification campaign – in which they finished fifth in the Conmebol table after losing six of their 18 matches – and winning the last of their record five World Cups 22 years ago, who would confidently rule out Brazil?

Who are the outside contenders?

Norway have not played in the World Cup since 1998 and have never got past the last 16, but with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland scoring 16 goals in qualifying, they could be a surprise in the summer.

They were flawless in qualifying, winning all eight of their matches, including home and away victories over four-time winners Italy.

Morocco were another side to win all of their qualifying games and they sit eighth in the world rankings. They reached the final of this year’s Africa Cup of Nations and, despite being beaten 1-0 by Senegal, they have been controversially awarded the title. They will likely be confident of advancing from a group that contains Brazil, Scotland and Haiti.

Egypt, featuring Mohamed Salah, will also expect to make it beyond a group that includes Belgium, New Zealand and Iran.

Japan are the strongest of the Asian sides and cruised through qualifying, conceding only three goals in 16 matches. And they recorded their first victory over England with a 1-0 friendly win at Wembley at the end of March. They will be up against the Netherlands, Tunisia and Sweden.

Colombia will be confident of a strongshowing after a good South American qualifying campaign in which they beat both Brazil and Argentina as they finished third overall.

What about the host nations? Well, Canada, in their third finals, could be a surprise. They have lost all six of their previous World Cup finals matches, but a kind draw has them in with Qatar, Switzerland and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Who are the World Cup debutants?

Curacao celebrate qualifying for the World Cup

Four nations are set to make their World Cup debut this summer.

The tiny Caribbean island of Curacao will become the smallest nation to participate in a World Cup when they take on Germany, Ivory Coast and Ecuador in Group E.

Curacao, 37 miles off the Venezuela coast, has a population of a little more than 150,000 (similar to Cambridge or Huddersfield) and a land area of 171 square miles, smaller than the Isle of Man.

They only became a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 2010.

Cape Verde, meanwhile, are the third-smallest nation after Curacao and Iceland to reach the World Cup. The Blue Sharks secured top spot in their qualifying group ahead of African heavyweights Cameroon.

An archipelago of 10 islands in the Atlantic Ocean with a population of fewer than 525,000, Cape Verde gained independence from Portugal in 1975 and first attempted to reach the World Cup when it was held in Japan and South Korea in 2002. They face Spain, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in Group H

There are two debutants from Asia in Uzbekistan and Jordan.

The Uzbeks, who were the Asian Cup semi-finalists in 2011, ended their long wait for qualification under 2006 World Cup-winning Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro.

The White Wolves boast players such as Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov and former Roma striker Eldor Shomurodov and will hope to make an impact in a group featuring Portugal, Colombia and DR Congo.

Jordan, meanwhile, finished behind South Korea with four wins and four draws from 10 matches in the third round of the qualifiers in Asia.

Ranked 64th in the world, their progress has been steady, reaching the final of the 2023 Asian Cup, when they were beaten by hosts Qatar. Argentina, Algeria and Austria await in Group J.

US and Iran call for each other’s World Cup absence https://www.adomonline.com/us-and-iran-call-for-each-others-world-cup-absence/ Sat, 14 Mar 2026 09:10:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2640400 Donald Trump’s claim that it would not be “appropriate” for Iran to take part in the 2026 World Cup “for their own life and safety” has been followed by the Iranians saying it should be co-hosts the United States who sacrifice their place instead.

US President Trump said in a post on social media that Iran would be “welcome to the World Cup” before signalling he felt they should not be involved.

Trump’s comments came after Iran’s Minister of Sports and Youth, Ahmad Donyamali, said his country were not in a position to participate in the tournament, which is being held in the United States, Canada and Mexico from 11 June.

Iran are due to face New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles on 15 and 21 June respectively, and Egypt in Seattle on 26 June.

But their participation has been in doubt since the US and Israel launched strikes on the country, killing supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran responded by launching missiles and drones towards Israel and four Gulf Arab countries which host US military bases – Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

“The Iran national soccer team is welcome to the World Cup, but I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety,” Trump posted on Truth Social on Thursday.

However, a message on the Iran team’s Telegram account said that Fifa is the organiser of the World Cup and “not any single country”.

Iran have not yet withdrawn from the tournament, and they appear determined to make their own decision, rather than have one imposed upon them, saying there should be no question about the safety of their players should they send a team.

The statement on Telegram added: “The Iranian national team also qualified for this event with authority and through consecutive victories, becoming one of the first teams to reach this great tournament.

“Certainly, no-one can remove the Iranian national team from the World Cup.

“Rather, the country that should be removed is the one that merely carries the title of host but does not have the ability to ensure security for the teams participating in this event.”

Earlier this week, Fifa president Gianni Infantino said Trump had told him Iran are “welcome to compete” at this summer’s finals.

But in an interview with the IRIB Sports Network on Tuesday, Donyamali said: “Given that this corrupt government has assassinated our leader, under no circumstances do we have the appropriate conditions to participate in the World Cup.

“Our boys are not safe, and conditions for participation do not exist.”

If Iran does withdraw from what would be the team’s fourth consecutive World Cup, Fifa’s regulations give the governing body discretion to choose a replacement, but it is unclear who that would be.

Strait of Hormuz: A narrow chokepoint more prominent than US/Israel-Iran war https://www.adomonline.com/strait-of-hormuz-a-narrow-chokepoint-more-prominent-than-us-israel-iran-war/ Thu, 12 Mar 2026 11:35:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2639779 In the last few days or perhaps weeks, since the US/Israel-Iran war started, one location that has seen more mention on search engines and AI platforms is the Strait of Hormuz.

So what is the Strait of Hormuz and why has it received prominence in the wake of the war?

The Strait of Hormuz, is a 21‑mile‑wide chokepoint between Iran and Oman which sits at the heart of a global economic storm.

While it might be tiny on a map, this waterway carries about 20%–30% of the world’s seaborne oil and liquefied natural gas.

Its strategic importance was always clear; today, it’s painfully visible as conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran disrupts traffic through this critical corridor.

From strategic artery to flashpoint

Before the war, the Strait was one of the world’s busiest energy routes, handling tens of millions of barrels of crude and sizeable volumes of LNG daily.

When shipping flows fall, already down 70% as carriers avoid the risks, the economic impact ripples outward.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has warned commercial vessels, and ship movements have plummeted, as insurers hike premiums and carriers reroute around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope.

These longer paths add weeks to voyages and significantly increase freight costs, affecting everything from fuel delivery to container shipping.

What happens if the Strait is closed?

A complete or prolonged closure, whether through threats, mines, or sustained hostilities, would be catastrophic:

Analysts have warned prices could spike above $100–$120 per barrel or higher if Hormuz remains blocked due to reduced supply.

Higher energy costs quickly feed into inflation, hurting consumers and businesses worldwide, and reducing economic growth.

The International Monetary Fund has noted that even a 10% oil price rise can heighten inflation and slow GDP growth.

Disruptions in oil, natural gas, and fertilizers, which also transit Hormuz, increase production costs across sectors like transportation, agriculture, manufacturing, raising food and goods prices globally.

Routes bypassing the strait add time and cost, squeezing margins for global logistics and prompting carriers to avoid the region altogether.

The effects won’t be limited to energy markets.

Major Asian importers like China, India, Japan, and South Korea rely heavily on Middle Eastern energy supplies.

Rising oil and gas costs there echo through export prices, industrial output, and household budgets.

For economies in African countries like Ghana, Latin America, and beyond, higher freight and commodity costs can slow growth, increase inflation, and complicate monetary policy just as nations are trying to recover from post‑pandemic pressures.

Beyond the immediate crisis, global leaders are confronting a stark reality: the vulnerability of energy supply chains tied to conflict zones, calling for diversification through renewables, nuclear, and regional pipelines that don’t depend on chokepoints, are getting louder.

The Strait of Hormuz is more than a narrow waterway; it is an artery of global commerce.

Its disruption underscores how interconnected modern economies are and how quickly geopolitical tensions can turn a strategic passage into a significantly narrow path to global crisis.

US opens priority visa appointment system for World Cup https://www.adomonline.com/us-opens-priority-visa-appointment-system-for-world-cup-2/ Thu, 22 Jan 2026 06:36:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2622295 World Cup 2026 ticket holders can now access priority visa appointments for travel to the United States – but doubt remains whether fans from every country to have qualified will be able to enter.

The Fifa Prioritised Appointment Scheduling System – or Fifa Pass – announced by US President Donald Trump in November, went live on Tuesday.

It was introduced in part because citizens of some countries whose teams have qualified for the 2026 World Cup may not otherwise receive visa appointments in time for the tournament.

But the US State Department has stressed that a Fifa Pass appointment does not guarantee a visa will be approved, with all ticket holders having to “undergo thorough security screening and vetting”.

Most citizens of countries under the US visa waiver programme, which covers much of Europe, including the UK, along with Japan, Australia and others, can ordinarily travel visa-free for up to 90 days, so do not need to use the Fifa Pass. Travellers from those countries would need to apply instead for an Esta – an Electronic System for Travel Authorization.

A senior State Department official said the new Fifa Pass system will cut wait times – with applicants in “over 80%” of countries now able to schedule a visa appointment in “less that 60 days”.

It added: “At the visa appointment, the applicant must show they qualify for the visa and plan to follow our laws and leave at the end of the tournament. America’s safety and the security of our borders will always come first.”

What about countries affected by immigrant visa suspension?

Football fans in countries affected by the US suspending the processing of immigrant visas will still be able to apply to travel to the country for this year’s World Cup.

The US said last Wednesday it will pause processing immigrant visas from 75 countries, 15 of which have qualified for the World Cup, including five-time winners Brazil.

A further seven nations on the list are still in contention to qualify for this year’s tournament, which will take place in the US, Canada and Mexico from 11 June to 19 July.

The State Department confirmed on Tuesday the pause “applies to the issuance of immigrant visas only” and “does not apply to non-immigrant visas, such as those for tourists, athletes and their families, and media professionals”.

Qualified nations on the list of 75 countries: Algeria, Brazil, Cape Verde, Colombia, Egypt, Ghana, Haiti, Iran, Ivory Coast, Jordan, Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Uruguay, Uzbekistan

Nations still in qualification contention on the list: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, Kosovo, North Macedonia

What about countries on travel ban list?

The order to indefinitely pause the processing of immigrant visa applications from those 75 countries will take effect on Wednesday, 21 January.

Prior to this move, Trump expanded a travel ban that came into force on 1 January, which bars nationals of countries on that list from entering the US.

Haiti and Iran, who have both qualified for the 2026 World Cup, are on the list of countries with full restrictions.

Ivory Coast and Senegal, who have also qualified, are on the list of countries with partial restrictions.

The State Department said a Fifa Pass appointment does not allow people “who are otherwise not eligible” to be issued a visa, meaning fans from those four countries appear unlikely to be able to travel to the US for this summer’s tournament.

Guidance from the State Department specified there are exceptions for “any athlete or member of an athletic team, including coaches, persons performing a necessary support role, and immediate relatives” to the travel ban for the World Cup.

However, it added “the exception does not apply to fans or spectators”. They can still submit visa applications but “they may be ineligible for visa issuance or admission to the United States”.

The US will host 78 of the 104 total matches at the World Cup, across 11 cities, including the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

What does Trump’s foreign policy mean for World Cup? https://www.adomonline.com/what-does-trumps-foreign-policy-mean-for-world-cup/ Wed, 14 Jan 2026 06:40:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2619033 A group of cross-party MPs have called on Fifa to consider expelling the United States from the World Cup until the country demonstrates “clear compliance with international law and respect for the sovereignty of other nations”.

It follows the seizure by US forces of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro in a raid on the capital city Caracas this month, along with warnings that US president Donald Trump has recently issued to a host of other countries.

So with the US due to host both the World Cup and Olympics over the next two and a half years, what questions does America’s foreign policy raise for sports organisations, and could any take a stand?

‘Repeated veiled and overt threats’

Back in December, Fifa awarded Trump its inaugural ‘Peace Prize’ at the 2026 World Cup draw ceremony in Washington, saying he had “played a pivotal role” in establishing a ceasefire and promoted peace between Israel and Palestine, and that he has sought to end other conflicts.

In the few weeks since, the US has taken military action in both Venezuela and Nigeria and has hinted at possible further operations in Greenland, fellow World Cup co-host Mexico, and two other participants in the tournament – Colombia and Iran.

Now, 23 politicians from Labour, the Lib Dems, Green Party and Plaid Cymru have signed a motion in parliament, calling on international sporting bodies to consider expelling the US from major international competitions, including the World Cup.

They say such events “should not be used to legitimise or normalise violations of international law by powerful states”.

The MPs express concern about the “escalation of US actions against Venezuela”, including “the kidnapping of President Nicolas Maduro”, claiming that they amount to “a direct intervention in the internal affairs of a sovereign state”.

Their motion also notes “repeated veiled and overt threats made by senior US officials”, towards Denmark, Colombia and Cuba”, saying it “undermines the rules-based international order”.

What has the US done and said?

While the White House is yet to respond to the BBC about the MPs’ motion, it has previously claimed that the capture of Maduro was a law-enforcement operation against an illegitimate leader responsible for both drug-trafficking and terrorism. Trump said the US will now control Venezuela and its oil industry.

Maduro insists he is a prisoner of war, and Trump faced strong criticism at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he was “deeply concerned that rules of international law have not been respected” during the US action.

Meanwhile, Trump has also told Cuba to “make a deal” over Venezuelan oil exports “before it is too late”, and said a military operation targeting Colombia “sounds good”.

As with Venezuela, Trump has accused Colombia of not doing enough to tackle drug trafficking. Colombia president Gustavo Petro has told the BBC that he believes there is now a “real threat” of US military action against his country.

Trump has also claimed that drugs are “pouring” through Mexico into America, adding “we’re gonna have to do something”, amid reports that he has started planning a mission to send in US troops.

Mexico president Claudia Sheinbaum says she has rejected any US military action on Mexican soil.

Trump has also insisted his country needs to take over Greenland for national security reasons and has not ruled out using military force.

The mineral-rich Arctic territory is controlled by Denmark, a fellow Nato member, and potentially also in the World Cup if its team comes through the play-offs.

The Trump administration has also faced mounting scrutiny over the legality of air strikes on alleged drug smuggling boats in the Caribbean Sea and Eastern Pacific.

Could Fifa act?

Fifa declined to comment on the MPs’ motion, and whether it may now reconsider the annual awarding of its peace prize in light of Trump’s recent foreign policy.

But few believe it will take any action against a country that is hosting the majority of its matches at the World Cup, especially given the close relationship the governing body’s president Gianni Infantino has cultivated with Trump.

Such ties have led to accusations that Fifa has become politicised, although it insists that as an organiser of football events it has a statutory duty to remain neutral.

This is not the first time Fifa has come under pressure over the political actions of a World Cup host.

In 2018, the tournament went ahead in Russia despite the country annexing Crimea four years earlier. Russia also stood accused of cyber attacks, meddling in western elections and carrying out the Novichok nerve agent attack in Salisbury.

However, comparisons have also been drawn with the way Fifa subsequently banned Russia after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, a sanction that remains in place.

“Let’s have consistency,” Brian Leishman, one of the MPs who has signed the motion, told the Daily Mirror when asked about the US action in Venezuela.

“It’s an invasion of a sovereign nation and the kidnap of a president in Venezuela. I’m very critical of Maduro, I want to be very clear on that, but what we’ve seen is a breach of international law. When you see how Russia has been treated, which is absolutely correct, I just want there to be consistency.”

Some at Fifa privately point out that the Russian Football Union is still a member association and that the ban on playing internationals was more down to teams refusing to play against Russia and security concerns, rather than the governing body taking a moral position.

An insight into Fifa’s approach came in October when Infantino said Fifa “cannot solve geopolitical problems” amid pressure to sanction Israel after a United Nations commission of inquiry concluded that it had committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

Israel’s foreign ministry said it categorically rejected the report, denouncing it as “distorted and false”.

What about the Olympics?

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) also maintains a ban on Russian teams at the Games, with individual athletes only allowed to compete as neutrals, as long as they are admitted by the relevant sporting federations.

However, it has ruled out the exclusion of any American athletes from February’s Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina in Italy.

In a statement issued to BBC Sport, it said: “As a global organisation, the IOC has to manage a complex reality. The IOC has to deal with the current political context and the latest developments in the world.

“The ability to bring athletes together, no matter where they come from, is fundamental to the future of values-based, truly global sport, which can give hope to the world.

“For this reason, the IOC cannot involve itself directly in political matters or conflicts between countries, as these fall outside our remit. This is the realm of politics.”

Last year, the IOC also rejected calls to bar Israel over the Gaza war, stating that the country’s national Olympic committee had complied with the Olympic Charter.

IOC sources have told BBC Sport a distinction has to be made with Russia because it took over Ukrainian territory and put athletes there under the control of the Russian Olympic Committee, which is against the Olympic Charter.

Los Angeles is hosting the Olympics in 2028.

‘A looming stress-test’

Some believe that, depending on Trump’s next moves, the situation could become harder for sports bodies to navigate.

“Fifa and the IOC could be heading towards one almighty headache,” according to John Zerafa, a veteran advisor to countries and cities wanting to host major sports events.

“Both organisations’ charters emphasise peace, respect for sovereignty, and non-discrimination.

“In Russia’s case, that led to bans and restrictions on athletes and teams. If, in a worst-case scenario, the US were to use force against Greenland – a Nato ally’s territory – would those same principles apply? If Denmark qualifies via the play-offs, would it boycott the World Cup? Would European or Nato leaders refuse to attend US-hosted events?

“This isn’t just geopolitics. It’s a looming stress-test for sporting institutions that pride themselves on neutrality, yet repeatedly find themselves forced to take political positions when international law and conflict collide with global competition.”

Trump’s hardline immigration policy could also have an impact on the World Cup, which begins on 11 June.

Fifa vowed to have a welcoming and unifying tournament, but there are now four competing countries – Iran, Haiti, Senegal and Ivory Coast – whose fans face full or partial travel bans, with the White House referencing a need to manage security threats.

Meanwhile, domestic tensions in the US have intensified after Renee Good, 37, was shot dead by an immigration agent in Minneapolis last week, triggering large protests in the city.

Even before the incident, human rights organisations had claimed the World Cup was at increasing danger of being “weaponised for authoritarian aims” and criticised “escalating attacks on immigrants in the US… and threats to press freedom and the rights of peaceful protesters”.

As Fifa’s biggest-ever tournament approaches it will be fascinating to see what further impact US action overseas has on ticket sales, collaboration between the co-hosts on issues such as security, and whether sports bodies feel they need to do more to navigate a complicated geopolitical landscape.

World Cup sends ‘dangerous message’ on climate https://www.adomonline.com/world-cup-sends-dangerous-message-on-climate/ Wed, 22 Oct 2025 10:34:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2591157 In eight months’ time the 2026 World Cup will make history as the biggest single sporting event. But not everyone is celebrating.

Amid the excitement, concerns are growing about the environmental cost of the vastly expanded tournament, drawing criticism from academics, players and fan groups.

BBC Sport looks at some of the key issues.

‘The most carbon-intensive event ever

Dr Madeleine Orr is a leading sport and climate expert who believes the 2026 World Cup “sends a dangerous message about the intentions of Fifa and other events to just get bigger and bigger”.

Next year’s tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada will be the first to be held across an entire continent, feature 48 teams and have 104 matches – 40 more than before. Fifa is considering expanding the tournament to 64 teams for the 2030 edition.

“It’s completely misaligned with the promises [Fifa] have made publicly to reduce emissions,” says Dr Orr, assistant professor of sport ecology at the University of Toronto. “At this point, it’s damage control.”

In their original bid for the 2026 World Cup, the three prospective host nations hoped the event would “establish new standards for environmental sustainability” and deliver “measurable environmental benefits”.

But Dr Orr is sceptical.

“If the new standard is the most carbon-intensive event ever, then yeah,” she says with sarcasm. “No, I don’t think that’s possible,” she adds.

Recent research from the Scientists for Global Responsibility (SGR) calculated the expanded tournament will generate more than nine million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, making it the most “climate-damaging” edition in the tournament’s history.

It could also be one of the hottest. In total, 14 of the 16 host cities for the World Cup are expected to be vulnerable to extreme heat during the tournament. Dr Orr believes that from 12pm to 4pm, many of these venues would be “virtually unplayable”.

Fifa has suggested adjusting kick-off times and relying on a handful of stadiums with roofs – their plans will become clearer after December’s World Cup draw – but critics argue the risk extends beyond the pitch.

“I’m not worried about the athletes,” Dr Orr explained. “I worry about 45,000 to 85,000 fans, the 10,000 staff and media personnel who are on site for prolonged periods.

“It’s going to be a challenge to figure out how to keep people safe. It is a conversation that’s being had, but as of today there is no firm plan on that.”

Fifa to ‘keep an open mind’ on conditions

Fifa declined to comment when approached by BBC Sport, and also declined to answer detailed questions about its sustainability strategy and contingency plans in the event extreme weather forces a change to the schedule.

However, speaking this month at the European Football Clubs (EFC) general assembly in Rome, Fifa president Gianni Infantino acknowledged that extreme heat in future summers might force a rethink of football’s global calendar.

“We are discussing all the time, and I think it’s not just about one World Cup – I think it’s a general reflection,” he said.

“Even to play in some European countries in July, it’s very, very hot. So maybe we have to think.

“There are ways we can optimise the calendar. But we are discussing it, and we will see when we come to some conclusion. We just have to have an open mind.”

Players feeling the heat

The struggles of playing in high temperatures in the US have been talked about for some time. In 2017, England forward Rachel Daly was treated for heat exhaustion in hospital after collapsing during a match in Houston, while playing in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

The heat was a constant theme of this summer’s Club World Cup. Record-breaking temperatures and violent storms wreaked havoc across the tournament. Lightning meant six games were delayed from 40 minutes to two hours.

Chelsea were one of the teams to struggle with the extreme heat. At their semi-final against Fluminense in New Jersey the temperature rose to more than 35C by kick-off, with midfielder Enzo Fernandez saying the conditions made him “dizzy” and were “very dangerous”.

How hot could it get?

USA 1994, remembered for the 41C the Republic of Ireland played in against Mexico in Orlando, was the hottest World Cup so far.

BBC’s senior weather forecaster Simon King said recently next year’s tournament could surpass that.

“In June 2023, an extreme heatwave was seen in Texas, Florida and Mexico for weeks. In Monterrey, Mexico the heat index was close to 50C and in Miami it was as high as 44C.

“It is impossible to say a year ahead whether host cities like those will experience heatwave conditions – climate change has loaded the dice to an increasing chance of this happening. And if it does, it could feasibly be the hottest World Cup on record.”

Five US cities (Boston, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York/New Jersey and San Francisco) which hosted games in 1994 are also hosting in 2026.

Data provided by Climate Central to BBC Sport showed that all those US cities (except San Francisco) experienced significantly more days above 32C, external in June 2025 than they did in 1994.

‘It’s obvious to players’

David Wheeler, former Wycombe Wanderers midfielder and one of football’s most vocal environmental advocates, sees climate change increasingly affecting the game, saying it is “becoming a lot more obvious to players and more of a topic of conversation”.

Wheeler, who is the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Sustainability Champion, believes the sport has a responsibility to do more.

“Unfortunately I don’t think the major governing bodies and organisations are really taking that responsibility seriously at the moment,” he says.

“These organisations don’t deserve to profit from sport if they’re not going to use their power for the betterment of sport.”

Wheeler also wants footballers to use their platform more to speak out on environmental issues.

“It could have a huge impact,” he said. “But it’s also important that clubs and fans’ groups also insulate the players because there’s going to be that inevitable backlash that they’re a hypocrite.

“The majority of us are hypocrites to some degree. We’re not perfect and that’s OK, just as long as we’re trying to do as much as we can.”

One player who does not shy away from using his platform to champion environmental issues is Real Betis defender Hector Bellerin.

Speaking after he was named Global Champion at the recent BBC Green Sport Awards, he said it was not easy to promote sustainability in a sport increasingly defined by global expansion.

“It’s hard,” he said, referencing the 2026 World Cup. “I don’t make the decisions and I’m very aware of how the industry works. But I’m not going to stop doing what I love because of decisions made at the top.

“We players often feel like we’re treated like numbers or marketable goods. There’s more games, more travel, more difficult conditions. And we’re just told to hydrate,” the former Arsenal player added.

“Unless footballers around the world unite – whether that means stopping or taking bold decisions – the wheel’s just going to keep turning,” he said.

All you need to know about 2026 World Cup https://www.adomonline.com/all-you-need-to-know-about-2026-world-cup/ Wed, 15 Oct 2025 07:36:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2588590 England sealed their place at the 2026 World Cup when Thomas Tuchel’s side defeated Latvia to qualify with two games to spare.

It means Three Lions fans can now start their preparations for next summer’s tournament whether they are going to it or watching on television.

From where the games will take place to how to get tickets, here is everything you need to know about what will be the biggest World Cup in history.

When and where will 2026 World Cup be held?

The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

It is the first time the tournament will be hosted by three different nations.

The opening match will take place on 11 June 2026 in Mexico City, with the final on 19 July in New Jersey.

The tournament is being expanded to include 48 teams for the first time and as a result it will last a record 39 days.

It has doubled in size since the last time the tournament was held in the United States, when 24 teams competed for the trophy in 1994.

The new format will feature 12 four-team groups and an extra knockout round – a round of 32.

Which cities are hosting 2026 World Cup matches?

Sixteen cities will host games during next summer’s World Cup – 11 in the United States, three in Mexico and two in Canada.

These are the 2026 World Cup host cities:

USA: Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Seattle.

Mexico: Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey.

Canada: Toronto and Vancouver.

When is the draw for World Cup groups?

The draw for the group stage will be held on Friday, 5 December at 17:00 GMT.

It will take place at John F Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in Washington DC.

The teams representing the host countries will be assigned to positions A1 (Mexico), B1 (Canada) and D1 (USA).

How to get World Cup tickets – and their cost

Image source: AFP via Getty Images

Image caption: Tickets for the 2026 final cost between $2,030 (£1,510), and $6,000 (£4,462)

The first batch of tickets went on sale at the start of October, with more than 4.5m fans entering a draw for a chance to buy them.

Fifa has not formally revealed a full price list, but they are being listed online by fans who were successful in the draw after spending hours in digital queues.

General admission tickets are being split into four categories, with those for the first match in the USA costing between $560 (£417) and $2,235 (£1,662).

The cheapest ticket for the 2026 final costs $2,030 (£1,510), and the most expensive is $6,000 (£4,462). Hospitality tickets, meanwhile, are yet to go on sale but will almost certainly be priced significantly higher.

Some tickets for matches early in the tournament – in a few of the less prestigious locations – are available for $60 (£44), but stadium map images show they are a tiny proportion of available seats.

The second phase of ticketing will begin on Monday, 27 October, with the Early Ticket Draw that will run until 31 October. This will involve an application process followed by a randomised selection.

A random selection draw will take place shortly after the groups are drawn on 5 December, during which fans can apply for specific matches.

A last-minute sales phase will take place closer to the tournament, during which fans will be able to purchase any remaining inventory on a first come, first served basis.

Fifa is adopting a ‘dynamic’ pricing model for the tournament, meaning ticket prices for matches deemed high demand could be raised significantly during later sales periods.

Fifa is also offering a ‘Right To Buy’ system to guarantee getting tickets, although fans can expect to pay significantly more for this option.

Which countries have qualified for World Cup?

England have secured their place at next summer’s tournament, along with 27 other teams.

Argentina, the world champions, are among those to have qualified but there are still 20 spots to fill.

The countries that have already secured their spot are:

Hosts: Canada, Mexico, United States.

Africa: Algeria, Cape Verde, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia

Asia: Australia, Iran, Japan, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Uzbekistan.

Europe: England.

Oceania: New Zealand.

South America: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay.

Of those countries, three have qualified for the World Cup for the first time in their history – Cape Verde, Jordan and Uzbekistan.

Suriname and Curiacao also remain hopeful of joining them as World Cup debutants.

The United States will host 78 of the 104 fixtures, including the final.

There have been a series of political assassinations in the US so far in 2025, and were more than 500 mass shootings across the country in 2024.

Forced deportations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers have also increased on the orders of President Donald Trump, who has deployed National Guard troops in Democrat-led cities, including Los Angeles, which will host eight matches.

ICE and National Guard deployments have drawn mass protests from distrustful communities in some cities, and Trump has threatened to force matches to be moved from cities he deems “unsafe”.

In March, he claimed the political and economic tensions between the US and co-hosts Canada and Mexico would be good for the tournament.

He made the comment after he imposed tariffs – taxes charged on goods imported from other countries – on the US’ two neighbours.

What will weather at World Cup be like?

Heat was an issue at the Club World Cup in the USA this summer and will once again be a concern for next year’s World Cup.

Paris St-Germain manager Luis Enrique complained about his team having to play in near 40-degree heat in their Club World Cup opener against Atletico Madrid in Los Angeles, which started at noon local time.

Numerous coaches and players were affected by the heat and humidity, with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez complaining of dizziness while playing.

Fifa is likely to schedule World Cup matches involving major European nations after midnight UK time in an effort to combat heat issues.

It is anticipated World Cup kick-off times will mirror those at the Club World Cup, when the earliest games started at 17:00 BST, followed by 20:00, 23:00 and 02:00.

‘The biggest event in sport’ – Trump announces 2026 World Cup draw https://www.adomonline.com/the-biggest-event-in-sport-trump-announces-2026-world-cup-draw/ Fri, 22 Aug 2025 10:08:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2570254 The draw for the 2026 men’s World Cup will take place in Washington this December, US President Donald Trump has announced.

The tournament will take place across the United States, Canada and Mexico and will feature 48 nations – up from 32.

The draw had been expected to be held in Las Vegas, which is where it was completed when the US hosted the 1994 tournament.

However, the draw, on 5 December, will instead go ahead at the Kennedy Center – the performing arts venue where Trump is chairman.

“It’s the biggest, probably the biggest event in sports,” Trump said.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino, who brought with him the World Cup trophy, also took part in the draw announcement from the Oval Office at the White House.

“The draw will be broadcast live all over the world and will be watched by one billion viewers,” Infantino said.

“It will be 48 participating teams. There will be 104 matches – 104 Super Bowls!”

Infantino offered Trump the opportunity to hold the trophy during the news conference on Friday. “Can I keep it?” Trump asked.

Spanish FA approves plans for La Liga match in USA https://www.adomonline.com/spanish-fa-approves-plans-for-la-liga-match-in-usa/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 05:34:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566039 Villarreal’s La Liga match against Barcelona in December could become the first European league fixture to be played abroad after the Spanish football federation approved plans to host the game in the United States.

The RFEF will now seek permission from Fifa and Uefa to move the game to the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, which is scheduled to host seven matches at the 2026 World Cup.

The game is currently scheduled to be played at Villarreal’s Estadio de la Ceramica on 21 December.

“At its meeting on 11 August 2025, the RFEF board of directors received a request from Villarreal CF and FC Barcelona to play their match on matchday 17 of the first division in the United States,” the RFEF said.

“The Royal Spanish Football Federation will submit the request to Uefa to begin the process for subsequent authorisation by Fifa for the match to be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on 20 December 2025.”

The Spanish football supporters’ association FASFE has joined with Barcelona and Villarreal fan groups to express their “absolute, total and firm opposition” to the plans.

In a joint statement, they urged the RFEF and the national sports council to “stop this madness”, warning they would “take appropriate legal action” if it went ahead.

Other one-off matches, such as the Italian Super Cup and Spanish Super Cup, have been held abroad in recent years.

AC Milan are hoping to play their Serie A match against Como in Perth, Australia in February, as the fixture clashes with their San Siro stadium hosting the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics.

However, the plans have yet to receive approval from Fifa, Uefa, Football Australia and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

Fifa’s rules currently do not allow domestic league matches to be played abroad, but last year it set up a working group to look into the matter.

Last year, La Liga said it wanted to hold Barcelona v Atletico Madrid in Miami before dropping the idea because of time constraints.

In 2019, Barcelona also planned to stage a league match against Girona in Miami, but the idea was scrapped after opposition from the RFEF and its players’ union.

The Premier League has previously said it has no plans to play games overseas.

In 2008, then Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore proposed playing an extra round of fixtures abroad, but the plans were shelved after criticism from fans and the media.

FIFA has officially announced that ticket applications for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will open on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.

Fans hoping to attend the tournament—set to be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States—must first register and create a FIFA ID at FIFA.com/tickets to be eligible for the ticket draw.

Following the success of the recent FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, demand for 2026 World Cup tickets is expected to hit record levels.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming the world back to North America, as Canada, Mexico and the United States host what will be the biggest and greatest sporting event ever,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino. “We encourage fans everywhere to get ready to secure their place – these will be the most coveted seats in world sport.”

FIFA noted that ticket sales will roll out in several phases, each with different purchasing options, payment methods, and ticket categories. Further details on each phase will be released monthly.

The tournament’s final draw will be held in December 2025 to determine the fixtures, venues, and kickoff times for all participating teams.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off on Thursday, June 11, in Mexico City, with the final scheduled for Sunday, July 19, in the New York/New Jersey area.

Club World Cup: What have we learned ahead of 2026 World Cup? https://www.adomonline.com/club-world-cup-what-have-we-learned-ahead-of-2026-world-cup/ Tue, 15 Jul 2025 05:04:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555295 The Club World Cup has been seen by many as a dress rehearsal for the 2026 World Cup, when 48 teams will battle it out for the global crown across Mexico, Canada and the United States.

Five of the venues over the past month – Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Hard Rock Stadium, MetLife Stadium, Lincoln Financial Field and Lumen Field – are also hosting matches next year.

So what has the Club World Cup taught us about what is to come? And are there any lessons Fifa can learn from it?

Former Manchester City and Tottenham midfielder Michael Brown, who was a co-commentator for DAZN at 10 games across five different cities, told BBC Sport: “I do feel like the tournament has been a really good test for the World Cup.”

Record-breaking heat & violent storms

Record-breaking heat and violent storms wreaked havoc across the tournament. A sign of things to come next year?

US rules mean play is stopped when lightning is recorded within a 10-mile radius – and cannot restart until 30 minutes after it finishes.

Six games were delayed, with durations ranging from 40 minutes to two hours. Two Benfica games, against Auckland and Chelsea, were delayed for about 120 minutes.

There were only four minutes left when that Chelsea game was held up. The Blues were winning 1-0 but Benfica levelled before Chelsea won in extra time.

“I think it’s a joke, to be honest,” Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca said at the time.

“It’s not football. It’s completely something new. I struggle to understand – if you suspend seven or eight games then it’s probably not the right place to do the competition.”

Fifa were fortunate storms didn’t impact evening games, which could have seen postponements until the following day, but it is a possibility for next year.

Chelsea were also one of many teams to struggle with the extreme heat.

Temperatures have soared to 39C in New York and humidity has made it feel even worse – more than 50C on the heat index.

Fifpro state that nine of next year’s 16 host cities have “very high” or “extremely high” risk of heat stress injuries during the tournament.

Clubs had to arrange shorter training sessions, with Maresca saying “otherwise you don’t save energy for the game”.

Ten Juventus players asked to be substituted during their defeat by Real Madrid, said their manager Igor Tudor.

Borussia Dortmund subs watched the first half of one game from the changing room to avoid the sun – and manager Niko Kovac said he was “sweating like I’ve just come out of a sauna”.

PSG boss Luis Enrique said: “It’s not good for the spectacle because it’s difficult to play in that position.”

Meanwhile, the sniffer dogs at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia were wearing Crocs due to the temperature of the concrete underfoot.

Brown told BBC Sport: “The weather has obviously been something all the teams have had to deal with. It’s affected the fans too – some of the days, the heat was so extreme.

“It was just ridiculous and it something that is going to affect everyone next year. Teams and fans will have to be ready for it.”

On the plus side, there will be five stadiums with roofs – as opposed to just one in Atlanta this summer – but the expansion of the tournament to 48 teams means significant risks remain.

Possible solutions are planning around kick-off times to avoid playing in hot cities in the middle of the day, as so often happened at the Club World Cup, while seven of the venues used this summer won’t be used in 2026.

“The weather has been hot but of course we can see about kick-off times, review and possibly look at hiding games earlier in the day at stadiums with roofs,” said former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, Fifa’s chief of global football development.

Will the crowds come out to USA 26?

The past month has brought a mixed bag when it comes to attendances – ranging from the sold-out to the embarrassingly sparse.

Four matches failed to get more than 10,000 fans – with the lowest attendance the 3,412 who watched Mamelodi Sundowns beat Ulsan HD 1-0.

But there have been 17 crowds of 60,000 or more – with the highest the 81,118 who saw Chelsea beat Paris St-Germain in Sunday’s final.

Most of the highest attendances were at games involving PSG or Real Madrid.

“We believe the attendances were projected as low and in reality were much higher,” said Wenger.

Another reason given for low attendances have been the kick-off times, with many being at noon or 3pm on a weekday.

Worst attended Club World Cup matches

Match Stadium Attendance % of capacity
Ulsan HD 0-1 Mamelodi Sundowns Inter&Co Stadium, Orlando 3,412 13%
Pachuca 1-2 Salzburg TQL Stadium, Cincinnati 5,282 20%
Benfica 6-0 Auckland City Inter&Co Stadium 6,730 26%
Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Ulsan HD TQL Stadium, Cincinnati 8,239 32%
Wydad AC 1-2 Al Ain Audi Field, Washington 10,785 54%

American journalist Doug Roberson said after Chelsea’s opener against Los Angeles attracted just 22,000: “It’s not because people here don’t care about soccer. The people aren’t here because it’s Monday at 3pm. Frankly I am surprised there are as many as there are.

“It’s a tournament that doesn’t mean a lot to people in the US because it’s new. I would imagine paying to come to a tournament you don’t know didn’t appeal because the World Cup is coming next year and people are trying to save money for that.

“If I were Fifa, for the World Cup I would have game times where more people could come. It is something to think about – and the ticket prices were ridiculous.”

Jonathan Tannenwald, chief soccer correspondent for the Philadelphia Inquirer, said: “We will all show up for the World Cup next summer but for the Club World Cup they needed to market it to explain.”

Fifa are expected to stick with the same kick-off times during next summer’s World Cup so will be relying on the appeal of the tournament to cut through and will be asking local fans to take time off work to attend matches.

The Gold Cup has also been going on over the past few weeks, played at non-Club World Cup venues in the US, attracting attention from TV audiences. This competing factor won’t be a problem next year.

Best attended Club World Cup matches

Match Stadium Attendance % of capacity
Chelsea 3-0 PSG MetLife Stadium, New Jersey 81,118 98%
PSG 4-0 Atletico Madrid Rose Bowl, Pasadena 80,619 90%
PSG 4-0 Real Madrid MetLife Stadium, New Jersey 77,542 94%
Real Madrid 3-2 Borussia Dortmund MetLife Stadium, New Jersey 76,611 93%
Fluminense 0-2 Chelsea MetLife Stadium, New Jersey 70,556 86%

Fifa’s policy of dynamic ticket pricing – where the cost of tickets can change regularly – has also been controversial and it is a policy they are expecting to carry into next year’s tournament.

Ticket prices for Chelsea’s semi-final against Fluminense reportedly dropped from almost £350 to less than £10 in the week before the game.

Tickets for the Blues’ quarter-final against Palmeiras ended up at £8 – with fans talking about having paid over £250 when they first went on sale.

Brown said: “When I’ve been travelling it feels like a lot of Americans are starting to speak about it now and know it is going on – whoever you speak to, they go ‘oh yeah it’s the football’.

“It is still growing, of course – the public’s awareness of it has got loads better than it was a few years ago but there is still a way to go, not just to spread the word that it is happening but to get people out here used to going to football games or watching matches on TV.

“It’s still not the main sport out here but that’s the next step. There is so much room for growth but if you go to a lot of bars and restaurants, then they are still showing a lot of baseball when the football is on.”

What have the stadiums and transport links been like?

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar was played within a radius of 43 miles.

The air-conditioned public metro system, which was free to use for fans with tickets during the tournament, reached six of the eight stadiums, with road transportation needed for the other two.

But the sheer scale of the USA has brought up concern about the transport to various stadiums for the 2026 tournament, with some venues difficult to reach via public transport.

BBC Sport found this to be the case during the tournament, especially at the 82,500-capacity MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where the Club World Cup final was held and where next year’s final is scheduled to take place.

The nearest train stop was Meadowlands Sports Complex station, requiring supporters to then walk 20 to 30 minutes in searing heat before reaching their relevant entry gate.

The semi-final between Real Madrid and PSG was also delayed at the same venue due to both teams being stuck in gridlocked traffic.

The opening match of the Club World Cup took place at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, which is set to host seven matches next year, including the third-fourth place play-off.

But the venue sits off a busy highway with no trains or metro system anywhere near the ground. Arriving three hours before kick-off allowed Uber drivers to drop off passengers close to the stadium before roads were closed off.

A post-match curfew meant no access for Uber or cab drivers within a certain distance and supporters had to walk for 20 minutes to a pick-up zone.

Manchester City played at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, which is set to host six matches at the 2026 tournament and is serviced by a metro system to the incredible sports complex featuring the football/NFL stadium, as well as the baseball and NHL venues.

City also played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, which is regarded as one of the best sporting stadiums in the world, featuring a retractable roof and giant LED screens.

Eight matches will be played inside the air-conditioned stadium next year, which has good transport links including a metro system close by and an Uber pick-up a 15-minute walk away.

A potential solution for some locations, which has been done at other tournaments, is free transport to fans with match tickets but special buses or trains will have to be arranged to make this happen.

Brown added: “The stadiums have been great and the logistics side, if it were done again, would be easier. They will have learned so much. I think it bodes well for next summer.”

One source at a host stadium for the Club World Cup said the preparation time for the event had left limited opportunity to convert mostly American Football (NFL) artificial surfaces to grass pitches.

The way the ball bounces and rolls is different from at stadiums in Europe and has led to complaints from England internationals Jude Bellingham and Reece James among others.

Dortmund manager Kovac highlighted the inconsistency between the various stadiums after losing to Real Madrid on the MetLife stadium pitch in New Jersey.

He said: “This pitch and the pitches we’ve played on in Cincinnati and also in Atlanta, the grass quality is different in the stadiums.

“It’s more a golf green. You can putt here. It’s very short. This is not the grass we are used to playing on in the Bundesliga and also the other stadiums.

“The watering wasn’t good enough, I’d say, because you don’t have the licence for that. For high-speed football, you need good conditions and you need also a good pitch, the right pitch. When it’s too dry, it’s unbelievable, it’s sticky.”

A Fifa source explained there is more bed-in time for the 2026 World Cup while local sources highlight how the US is such a big country with different climates that grass that works in one city may not work in another.

How stringent will security be?

There were regular checks for media and scanning of passes to make sure they were holding the correct credentials for accessing different parts of stadiums.

With Donald Trump in attendance, security was predictably at its very tightest for the final between Chelsea and PSG.

Given the game was played a year to the day since the assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania, the heightened security at MetLife Stadium came as no surprise.

The United States Secret Service were armed and on location, with several snipers positioned on the roof of the ground.

Up until that point, the heaviest security presence seen by BBC Sport was at the opening game in Miami, where police cars with flashing lights lined the main boulevards leading up to the stadium.

Police officers with ‘counter terrorism’ logos patrolled the exterior of the venue and numerous security checks and bag searches were made before entry was granted.

Supporters needed extra time to make their way inside as they were forced to have further checks at a second perimeter point.

Sniffer dogs were in place near the entrance to the stadium in Philadelphia, while at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando, armed officials dressed all in black with ‘bomb squad’ logos walked up and down the length of the press box.

Meanwhile, reports said US immigration and border protection personnel provided security at matches during the tournament and it remains to be seen whether the same will take place next year.

Mexico beat USA to defend Gold Cup title https://www.adomonline.com/mexico-beat-usa-to-defend-gold-cup-title/ Mon, 07 Jul 2025 08:46:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2552071 Mexico fought back from conceding an early goal to beat Mauricio Pochettino’s United States and defend their Gold Cup title in Houston, Texas.

Former Tottenham and Chelsea manager Pochettino saw his team gain a fourth-minute lead through Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards. He headed in from Sebastian Berhalter’s free-kick, with the ball bouncing down off the underside of the crossbar and just crossing the line.

But the US advantage only lasted 23 minutes as Fulham striker Raul Jimenez equalised with a first-time shot on the turn into the roof of the net from eight yards out, following Marcel Ruiz’s intelligent reverse pass.

Jimenez celebrated the goal by sitting on the turf with a ‘Diogo J 20’ shirt in front of him as a tribute to his former Wolves team-mate Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash on Thursday aged 28.

Mexico dominated the second half and got the winner in the 77th minute with a diving header from Edson Alvarez, although it had originally been ruled out for offside before the video assistant referee showed the West Ham defender was onside.

The Gold Cup featured 16 nations, 15 from North and Central America as well as Saudi Arabia, who had been invited to compete. All but one of the matches have been held in the United States, with the other one staged in Vancouver, Canada.

Pochettino took Tottenham to the Champions League final in 2019 and had been appointed boss of the US national team in September 2024, four months after being dismissed by Chelsea.

Raul Jimenez played in the same Wolves side as Diogo Jota in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons

What was the main talking point?

Although the final ended in defeat, this tournament has been a welcome return to form for the US after they had suffered four successive home defeats between March and June – against Panama, Canada, Turkey and a 4-0 thrashing by Switzerland.

Pochettino had guided the US to wins over Trinidad and Tobago, Saudi Arabia, Haiti, Costa Rica and Guatemala to take them to the final, but they could not take the final step.

They looked on course to win the competition with their early goal, but Mexico recovered from a poor start to secure a deserved victory and regain the trophy they had won two years ago.

Which players stood out?

Mexico had almost 60% of possession and dominated the stats with 12-0 corners and 16-6 shots, with eight of those efforts on target, while the US only had three on target.

American goalkeeper Matt Freese made six saves to keep his side in the match, but the US could not hold on for extra time as Freese was beaten for a second time with Alvarez’s header with 13 minutes remaining.

The standout stats

This was the 18th hosting of the Gold Cup and either the United States or Mexico has won every tournament, apart from in 2000 when Canada took the title.

Mexico have now won it 10 times with the United States having seven successes.

What is next for these teams?

With next summer’s World Cup being held in Canada, Mexico and the US, these countries do not need to qualify so will only be playing friendlies until the tournament.

The US have two home games in September, against South Korea in New Jersey on 6 September and then against Japan in Ohio four days later.

Mexico play the same two nations in their next two friendlies, Japan on 6 September and South Korea on 9 September.

Visa denials not deliberate – U.S. Consul General assures Ghanaians https://www.adomonline.com/visa-denials-not-deliberate-u-s-consul-general-assures-ghanaians/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 09:54:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547629 The Consul General at the United States Embassy in Ghana, Mr. Elliot Fertik, has assured Ghanaians that U.S. visa denials are not deliberate, adding that applicants who follow the correct procedures stand a fair chance of approval.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, June 24, Mr. Fertik emphasised that the U.S. visa process is guided by clear rules and transparency.

“The requirements are strict. We do look carefully at each individual applicant to make sure they are qualified and do not pose any problem for the United States,” he said. “But if you abide by the rules, we will welcome you in the United States.”

He noted that many Ghanaians have benefited from the U.S. visa system over the years, with several enjoying successful short trips to the country.

When asked whether there was a quota for issuing visas, Mr. Fertik clarified that there are no limits for non-immigrant visas.

“For non-immigrant visas, no. I can say that there are quotas for immigrant visas — we do have a limit for each country — but not for non-immigrant ones,” he explained.

Mr. Fertik also advised prospective applicants to avoid using third-party agents or visa consultants, cautioning that many are untrustworthy and could mislead applicants, reducing their chances of success.

He reiterated the embassy’s commitment to fairness and urged applicants to use official channels, prepare thoroughly, and provide truthful information.

USA players ‘cannot dictate plan’ – Pochettino https://www.adomonline.com/usa-players-cannot-dictate-plan-pochettino/ Sun, 15 Jun 2025 13:55:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2544783 United States men’s coach Mauricio Pochettino has told his players they cannot pick and choose which games they will be available for.

AC Milan forward Christian Pulisic offered to play in two friendlies before the Gold Cup, but wanted to be rested for the tournament itself.

However, Pochettino decided to leave the 26-year-old out of his squad for the friendlies with Turkey and Switzerland.

Pulisic has played 118 games for club and country since joining Milan from Chelsea in July 2023, but was criticised by former US internationals Landon Donovan and Alexi Lalas.

Speaking to CBS Sports on Thursday, Pulisic said that while he “respected” Pochettino’s decision he “didn’t understand it”, adding that those questioning his commitment to the national team were “way out of line”.

“Players [do] not need to understand or not understand,” Pochettino said on Saturday. “Players need to listen and to stick with our plan. They cannot dictate the plan.

“The most important thing is that we explained why we decided not to include [him] in the two friendly games.

“Then if you have some problems, no, that is not my problem to understand. I am the head coach, I am not a mannequin.”

USA lost 2-1 to Turkey and 4-0 to Switzerland, meaning they have suffered four straight defeats before their Gold Cup opener against Trinidad and Tobago in San Jose on Sunday.

What will Trump travel ban mean for sport? https://www.adomonline.com/what-will-trump-travel-ban-mean-for-sport/ Sat, 07 Jun 2025 08:44:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2542474 The United States is gearing up to host the world’s two biggest sporting events in the next three years, the 2026 Fifa World Cup and 2028 Olympic Games.

They are events which ordinarily see a host nation attract hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the globe.

So will a new travel ban issued by US President Donald Trump have an impact on the tournaments? And what about the ban’s effect on the wider world of sport?

The policy places full restrictions on citizens of 12 countries entering the United States, as well as partial constraints on seven others as part of an immigration crackdown he says is needed over security threats.

However, the order contains an exemption that could apply to participants in the 2026 Fifa World Cup and 2028 Olympics.

Organisers of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics say they have “great confidence” that the ban will not disrupt the summer Games or the preparations for them.

Speaking after a meeting with the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) co-ordination commission, LA28 chair and president Casey Wasserman said: “It was very clear in the directive that the Olympics require special consideration, and I want to thank the federal government for recognising that.

“It’s very clear that the federal government understands that’s an environment that they will be accommodating and provide for.

“And so we have great confidence that that will only continue.”

BBC Sport takes a closer look at the ban and its potential impact.

Which countries does the ban affect?

Passport-holders from 12 nations are now outright banned from entering the United States. They are: Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

Seven more countries – Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela – face significant but not full restrictions on travel.

Section four of the travel ban includes a clear exemption for sports stars travelling to those competitions – and other “major” sporting events.

It says “any athlete or member of an athletic team, including coaches, persons performing a necessary support role, and immediate relatives, traveling for the World Cup, Olympics, or other major sporting event as determined by the secretary of state” can still travel to the US.

“Two hundred and six countries are preparing to come to the Games,” said Nicole Hoevertsz, an IOC vice president who chairs the LA28 coordination commission.

“The federal government has given us that guarantee … to make sure that these participants will be able to enter the country… We are very confident that this is going to be accomplished.”

As well as the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles, the USA will also co-host the Fifa World Cup in 2026, alongside Canada and Mexico.

What key detail has been left out of the announcement for athletes?

The text means that those participating in the two major global sports events the US will host during Trump’s second term will still be able to travel. But the lack of detail around other sporting events throws open a series of important, and as yet unanswered, questions.

The State Department has offered no further clarification or measurement criteria for what Secretary of State Marco Rubio will or will not consider a “major sporting event”.

“I think people from around the world, and Americans going to these events, would want to see actions like this,” said US state department spokesperson Tommy Pigott at a press briefing on Thursday afternoon.

“This is part of what it means to host an event. We take security concerns extremely seriously, we want people to be able to go to the World Cup and do so safely.”

The Concacaf Gold Cup, for example, begins in the USA on 15 June and Haiti are due to participate. But given the travel ban does not list the Gold Cup (which features North America, Central America and Caribbean nations) as among the exempted major events, their participation is now in doubt.

The phrasing ‘World Cup’ is also unclear. The revamped Fifa Club World Cup, featuring 32 of the world’s best club teams, will take place in the USA from 14 June to 13 July. 10 players from countries under travel restriction are on the books of the competing clubs, but whether the tournament is included in the exemption or not has not yet been clarified.

Furthermore, track and field athletes often travel to the USA to participate in training camps in preparation for major meets. Though the exemptions make clear that athletes from the affected countries can travel to the Olympics in 2028, it makes no mention of their ability to attend camps in the time before then.

The BBC has contacted the US State department for a response.

Are fans exempt from the travel ban?

Fans from the restricted countries have not been given an exemption for major sports events.

Iran, for example, have already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, while the likes of Haiti, Sudan and Venezuela also stand a chance of qualifying.

There have already been concerns over the length of time the citizens of some countries were being made to wait for US travel visas to be processed and granted. And now fans of all of those teams will be unable to travel to the tournament, as things stand. It could be argued that the restriction means those teams will suffer a competitive disadvantage, given their rivals will be able to draw on support from the stands.

When asked if he was worried that ticket sales for the LA Games could be affected, Wasserman said “no”.

What about athletes from barred countries who play in the USA?

The proclamation does not make clear what will happen to athletes who are citizens of barred countries but currently work in the USA.

The NBA, MLB and MLS all feature players who are citizens of countries now placed on the travel ban list – how those players can continue to play in the USA is uncertain.

In football, for example, nine Venezuelans are currently on the books of clubs in Major League Soccer. Three of them – Ronald Hernandez of Philadelphia Union, David Martinez of Los Angeles FC, Josef Martinez of San Jose Earthquakes – are due to take part in international fixtures abroad over the next week.

By the time they return to the USA, travel restrictions on Venezuelans will be in place. It is not clear whether the three, and other athletes employed by US teams across all sports, will be allowed to return after travelling abroad to compete or visit family.

The BBC has contacted the NBA, MLB and MLS.

Has Trump banned athletes before?

During his first term in office, Trump enacted a sweeping travel ban on some countries, most of which had majority Muslim populations. At the time, the MLS Players Union said it was “deepy concerned” about members that may be impacted and that it was “extremely disappointed”.

Trump’s anti-immigration policies have also prevented some athletes from other nations taking part in scheduled events held in the USA.

In 2017 the Tibetan women’s soccer team were denied US visas to attend the Dallas Cup in Texas. In 2019 nine players from the Guatemalan Under-15 national soccer team were denied entry to participate in the Under-15 Concacaf Championship, and Cuba captain Yordan Santa Cruz was denied a visa for the 2019 Gold Cup.

In 2017 football’s world governing body Fifa warned Trump that travel bans could hinder the USA’s joint bid for the 2026 World Cup. Fifa president Gianni Infantino said: “It’s obvious when it comes to Fifa competitions, any team, including the supporters and officials of that team, who qualify for a World Cup need to have access to the country, otherwise there is no World Cup. The requirements will be clear.”

That ban was eventually overturned by Trump’s successor Joe Biden in 2021.

Earlier this year Zambia’s women’s team withdrew four United States-based players from their squad for an upcoming tournament in China because of “travel measures” introduced by Trump.

In April there were concerns that Duke University basketball star Khaman Maluach could face possible deportation after the US revoked all visas of South Sudanese passport-holders and he was advised to not leave the country in case he could not re-enter.

What will Fifa make of the ban?

In the years since that climbdown, Infantino appears to have been keen to cosy up to Trump.

The Fifa president attended Trump’s inauguration in January and was seen applauding and laughing during the Republican’s speech alongside tech billionaires including Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos.

The speech – given by Trump after he was sworn in for his second term as president – included negative comments about neighbouring Canada and Mexico, the USA’s World Cup co-hosts.

During the week of the inauguration, Infantino made a series of glowing social media posts about Trump, including writing “Donald Trump and I share a great friendship” in an Instagram caption. In total, Infantino posted about Trump nine times in less than a week.

Infantino then accompanied Trump on the latter’s state visit to Saudi Arabia, before drawing the ire of Uefa and other continental bodies by delaying the start of the Fifa congress in Paraguay in order to hold a private meeting with Trump.

The BBC has put questions about the travel ban to Fifa and the IOC.

TikTok goes offline in the US hours before ban https://www.adomonline.com/tiktok-goes-offline-in-the-us-hours-before-ban/ Sun, 19 Jan 2025 12:34:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2494518 TikTok has gone offline in the US, hours before a new law banning the platform was due to come into effect.

A message appearing on the app for US users said a law banning TikTok had been enacted, meaning “you can’t use TikTok for now”.

“We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office,” it read.

It comes after the social media platform warned it would “go dark” on Sunday unless the outgoing Biden administration gave assurances the ban will not be enforced.

President-elect Donald Trump has said he would “most likely” give TikTok a 90-day reprieve from a ban once he takes office on Monday.

Users reported the app had also been removed from both Apple and Google’s US app stores and TikTok.com was not showing videos.

“The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done, because it’s appropriate,” Trump told NBC News on Saturday.

“If I decide to do that, I’ll probably announce it on Monday.”

The White House said that it was up to the incoming administration to take action.

“We see no reason for TikTok or other companies to take actions in the next few days before the Trump administration takes office on Monday,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.

The Supreme Court on Friday upheld the law, passed in April last year, banning the app in the US unless its China-based parent company, ByteDance, sold the platform by Sunday, which it has not done.

TikTok has argued that the law violates free speech protections for its 170 million users in the country.

After the ruling, TikTok’s chief executive, Shou Zi Chew, appealed to Trump, thanking him for his “commitment to work with us to find a solution.”

Mr Chew is expected to attend Trump’s inauguration on Monday.

In the hours leading up to the social media platform going offline, content creators had been posting videos to say goodbye to their followers.

Creator Nicole Bloomgarden told the BBC that not being on TikTok would result in a significant salary cut.

Another user, Erika Thompson, said educational content on the platform would be the “biggest loss” for the community.

TikTok users were met with a message earlier on Saturday that said the law would “force us to make our services temporarily unavailable. We’re working to restore our service in the U.S. as soon as possible.”

Goldman Sachs predicts 2.7% GDP growth rate for global economy https://www.adomonline.com/goldman-sachs-predicts-2-7-gdp-growth-rate-for-global-economy/ Mon, 18 Nov 2024 11:17:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2472721 Goldman Sachs Research is forecasting another solid year of global economic growth in 2025.

Economists at the renowned US firm project that the US will outperform expectations while the euro area lags behind amid fresh tariffs anticipated from the Trump administration.

Worldwide Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is predicted to expand 2.7% next year on an annual average basis, just above the consensus forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg and matching the estimated growth in 2024.

US GDP is projected to increase 2.5% in 2025, well ahead of the consensus at 1.9%.

The euro area economy is expected to expand 0.8%, compared with the consensus of 1.2%.

China’s economy will however expand by 4.0%, whilst India will record 6.7% GDP growth rate.

“Global labor markets have rebalanced,” Goldman Sachs Research Chief Economist Jan Hatzius wrote in the team’s report, which is titled “Macro Outlook 2025: Tailwinds (Probably) Trump Tariffs.”

“Inflation has continued to trend down and is now within striking distance of central bank targets,” Hatzius said. “And most central banks are well into the process of cutting interest rates back to more normal levels.”

US, the world’s largest economy is expected to grow faster than other developed-market countries for the third year in a row. The re-election of US President Donald Trump is predicted to result in higher tariffs on China and on imported cars, much lower immigration, some fresh tax cuts, and regulatory easing.

“The biggest risk is a large across-the-board tariff, which would likely hit growth hard,” Hatzius added.

EducationUSA: Ghanaian students in US benefit from $9 million Investment https://www.adomonline.com/educationusa-ghanaian-students-in-us-benefit-from-9-million-investment/ Mon, 16 Sep 2024 18:27:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2449669 In a move to underscore the commitment to fostering educational collaboration between Ghana and the United States, Ghanaian students studying in America benefited from a $9million investment from US universities in 2023.

This development, according to the Counselor for Public Diplomacy at the US Embassy Ghana, Emily Fertik was part of a deliberate plan by the respective US institutions through EducationUSA to address funding challenges Ghanaian students encounter in their bid to pursue higher learning.

“Last academic year, EducationUSA helped facilitate $9million of scholarships and financial aid for Ghanaian students. To be clear these are not scholarships coming directly from the US Embassy, these are scholarships offered by the universities themselves.”

Speaking at the EducationUSA College fair in Kumasi, Ms. Fertik indicated that despite the plethora of scholarships and financial aid packages available international students, they struggled navigating the process.

EducationUSA in partnership with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Thursday, September 12, 2024, held the Kumasi edition of its annual education fair.

The fair brought together representatives of over fifty American universities and prospective undergraduate and graduate students to interact and explore the opportunities of studying in the US.

Statistics from EducationUSA indicate that Ghana is ranked twenty-third globally, in terms of the number of students studying in the US. As of 2023, 6,500 Ghanaians were learning in the US, a figure expected to rise in the coming years.

Further touching on how prospective students could benefit from a rewarding US education, the Public Diplomacy Counselor admonished individuals to conduct thorough research, build a relationship with EducationUSA, and take advantage of their resources, both virtually and on-site.

“You don’t have to be in Accra or Kumasi to receive EducationUSA services. One thing COVID taught us is that we could do this virtually and every resource EducationUSA offers, they offer virtually as well. This EducationUSA fair is happening across Africa; South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Nigeria.”

Chief Executive of ACE Consult and EducationUSA Advisor, Marilyn Owusu hinted that despite the difference in curriculum, Ghanaian students have always fitted in perfectly when they encountered the US education system.

“The US universities appreciate that international students are used to a particular curriculum from their home countries, so for the first year, they all go through a normal, routine class and faculty. I must say we are very excited about the prospects of this fair.”

A fair attendee, Charlestina Valeria, a student from the Kumasi Anglican SHS who aspires to be an optometrist or a dentist, expressed her excitement about the event.

She indicated that her interaction with the schools’ representatives had exposed her what she needed to do in achieving her goals.

“My expectation for coming here is to explore more about the schools in the US. I want to offer optometry or dentistry and honestly, I am highly enthused about the opportunity to be here, because I have explored more, speaking to the schools present,” she said.

Some of the universities present at the EducationUSA fair included Park University, Lewis University, Bryant University, East Carolina University, University of Bridgeport, Sunyat Buffalo, University of Western States, American University, University of South Dakota, and The Chicago School of Professional Psychology amongst others.

EducationUSA, with offices in Accra and Kumasi, remains the trusted source for information on US higher education, offering comprehensive guidance on accredited institutions, admissions processes, financial aid, and student visas.

No plans for military base in Ghana — USA https://www.adomonline.com/no-plans-for-military-base-in-ghana-usa/ Mon, 02 Sep 2024 13:28:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2442729 The United States of America (USA) has no plans of establishing a military base in Ghana, a top security envoy has stated.

Major General Kenneth P. Ekman, the Director of US Africa Command (AFRICOM) Coordination Element (ACE), told the Daily Graphic in an exclusive interview that many people had been asking questions on the subject but contrary to that, he said, the United States had no such intention.

Rather, he added, what it intended to do was to reposition some forces in the region just as it was doing in Cote d’Ivoire, Benin and Chad.

Major General Ekman, who is based in the Nigerien capital, Niamey, to oversee the complete, safe and orderly withdrawal of over a thousand US forces and equipment, accorded Graphic Online the exclusive interview during a visit to Ghana after visiting neighbouring Nigeria.

He said his visit to Ghana underscored the strength of the US-Ghana partnership and reaffirmed shared values and commitment to ongoing collaboration to ensure stability and prosperity in West Africa.

Major General Ekman has so far met with government officials and the military leadership, including the Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, and the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lt Gen. Thomas Oppong-Peprah, on shared visions for future bilateral engagements, coordination and interoperability in Africa.

The Director of ACE told Graphic Online’s Augustina Tawiah at the US Embassy in Accra last Tuesday that US security relations with Ghana were now transitioning, with less emphasis on training to more logistical support.

To this end, he disclosed that the US would deliver a number of military equipment to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in a few months.

He explained that the idea to support GAF with military equipment resulted from discussions he had with his Ghanaian counterparts on the form of partnership the US could build with Ghana.

Maj. Gen. Ekman pointed out that the US would hold a similar exercise in the maritime domain since Ghana was a maritime power.

Visit

Touching on his visit to Ghana, Maj. Gen. Ekman said it was also to discuss regional security, counter-terrorism and Ghana’s ability to export security in many ways outside its borders.

“The primary focus of my visit here, is how Ghana exerts its role and strength to contribute to a regional approach against Sahelian base extremist organisations. Your leaders have gone over some of their plans for this.

They’ve talked about things like border security and capacities, where they still need more support. And they talked about training. So, getting that partnership right now in Ghana, that’s the primary focus of this visit,” the Director of ACE said.

Maj. Gen. Ekman, however, expressed disappointment at how the sub-region was increasingly being disintegrated security-wise and diplomatically, adding that his goal during the visit was to meet Ministers of Defence and Chiefs of Defence of countries that surround the Sahel on how transparently the US could work with them to see what might work better in dealing with the insurgency and militant activities in the sub-region.

US superstars beat France to win Olympic gold https://www.adomonline.com/us-superstars-beat-france-to-win-olympic-gold/ Sat, 10 Aug 2024 23:02:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2432203 The United States maintained their grip on the Olympic men’s basketball title by overwhelming hosts France to win a fifth successive gold medal in Paris.

A star-studded American team packed with NBA icons, led by LeBron James and Steph Curry, demonstrated their quality to win 98-87 amid a febrile atmosphere at Bercy Arena.

The success saw the current crop emulate the 1992 ‘Dream Team’ which they have been regularly compared to.

In front of almost 20,000 boisterous fans, France refused to roll over and moved back within three points at 82-79 with the clock ticking down in the final quarter.

But Curry, as he so regularly does, instantly landed a three-pointer for 85-79 to ease the pressure and swished three more as the Americans raced away.

Ultimately, Les Bleus did not have enough to put the Americans into an unwanted bracket of failure.

Pretty much every US Olympic squad since the Barcelona Games has been compared to the side led by Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson.

Six teams have won Olympic gold – but none have ever come close to being revered like this Gen Z ensemble cast.

Now, after securing victory in Paris, a group featuring four NBA regular season MVP winners – James, Curry, Kevin Durant and Joel Embiid – 11 NBA All-Stars and seven NBA champions has to be mentioned in the same breath.

Curry was the focal point of the American celebrations when the final hooter went, hugged by his team-mates and draped in a Stars and Stripes flag by James.

Stars turn out for hottest ticket in town

On the penultimate night of the Games, it was the Bercy Arena which felt like the hottest ticket in town.

France, led by NBA rookie of the year Victor Wembanyama, against the American All Stars.

The magnitude of the occasion was indicated by the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron and calibre of athletes – past and present – courtside.

The hosts were represented by football icon Thierry Henry and NBA legend Tony Parker, along with swimmer Leon Marchand and judoka Teddy Riner.

On the American side of celeb row was sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson, television personality Jimmy Fallon and Scottie Pippen, part of the legendary 1992 roster which the current crop were trying to emulate.

Not everyone was so lucky, however. Fans without tickets waited outside holding homemade signs pleading for someone to help them out.

If those outside did manage to join the 16,000 other fans inside, it was well worth the gamble.

How US stars claimed gold

The high-octane atmosphere in the stands continued on the court as the stars came out to play.

France began well with their talisman Wembanyama – the 7ft 2in prodigy – scoring seven points in a fast and furious start.

But the Americans quickly raised their level and responded strongly.

James illustrated their growing confidence with a behind-the-back assist which Devin Booker put away before a pair of three-pointers from Anthony Edwards secured a 20-15 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

France rallied at the start of the second period to turn a five-point deficit into a lead, but Team USA stepped on the gas.

A six-point gap opened up at 37-31 when James trampled through French defenders in trademark fashion, with Curry and Jrue Holiday landing from behind the arc to put them eight points ahead at half-time.

The hosts had an uphill task in front of them to dethrone the kings of the Olympic court.

Continued to be backed by vociferous support, they kept plugging away to stay within reach.

The third quarter closed at 72-66 and, although they refused to give up in the final period, their wait for a maiden Olympic title goes on.

US superstars reach Olympic final after ‘special’ fightback https://www.adomonline.com/us-superstars-reach-olympic-final-after-special-fightback/ Fri, 09 Aug 2024 10:01:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2431427 A star-studded United States side showed their quality when it mattered as they fought back from a 13-point deficit in the final quarter to beat Serbia in a thrilling Olympic men’s basketball semi-final.

The vast array of NBA superstars, led by LeBron James and Steph Curry, trailed 76-63 after three quarters.

But they turned up the heat and turned around the deficit to win 95-91 at a noisy Bercy Arena.

“To come back the way we did… I’ve seen a lot of team USA basketball and that was a special,” said Curry, who finished with game-high 36 points.

The comeback maintained the Americans’ bid for a fifth successive gold in an Olympic event which they have dominated since it was introduced in 1936.

On Saturday, they will play hosts France in the gold-medal match.

Serbia, led by Nikola Jokic, the NBA’s reigning most valuable player (MVP), must settle for a crack at bronze when they face Germany earlier on the same day.

The Gen Z Dream Team prove their worth

Pretty much every US Olympic squad since the 1992 Games has been compared to the ‘Dream Team’ led by Michael Jordan and none have ever come close.

This Gen Z ensemble cast, featuring four NBA regular season MVP winners – James, Curry, Kevin Durant and Joel Embiid – 11 NBA All-Stars and seven NBA champions, is not far behind.

Coach Steve Kerr – himself one of the greatest bosses in NBA history – wondered how he would knit together five players from a 12-man squad where each could be a future Hall of Famer.

Against Serbia it took a while for the individuals to get going as a team with only Curry, finding space to land his trademark three-pointers, keeping them within touching distance.

Jokic looked on course to upstage his American opponents, playing a key role as Serbia, who led by as many as 17 points, stifled them in a dominant first half.

But, as the US powered back into the game, Serbia faltered.

Three-pointers from Durant and Embiid started to turn the tide in the last quarter before James bustled through to put them level at 84-84.

Curry landed another from behind the arc as the Americans led with two minutes and 24 seconds left – the first time they had been ahead since 45 seconds after the game started.

With an A-List crowd including Simone Biles, Snoop Dogg and Travis Scott cheering them on, they closed out a memorable victory and danced in celebration on the court.

Serbia were unhappy with some of the refereeing decisions in the clutch moments, making their feelings known by lambasting the officials as they walked off the floor.

France willing to ‘spill blood’ to win gold

Earlier, France were helped by a frenzied home crowd as they edged past Germany 73-69.

With jubilant fans celebrating inside the arena, and many more watching television screens outside Parisian bars, France moved into the gold-medal match for the second successive Games.

In Tokyo, Les Bleus had to settle for silver as they were unable to end the American stranglehold.

France face a tough task to stop them again, although they also have an NBA superstar themselves in 20-year-old Victor Wembanyama.

The spindly 7ft 4in centre, known as Wemby or the ‘Alien’ for his height and wingspan, lived up to the hype that preceded his first season at the San Antonio Spurs by winning rookie of the year.

His fine year has continued by being at the forefront of his nation’s Olympic run and he says the team will put their bodies on the line in order to beat the Americans.

“In our national anthem, we talk about blood, too. We’re willing to spill blood on the court,” said Wembanyama.

“So it’s no big deal. If it allows us to win gold, I’m all for it.”

US beat Germany to reach first Olympic final since 2012 https://www.adomonline.com/us-beat-germany-to-reach-first-olympic-final-since-2012/ Tue, 06 Aug 2024 23:02:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2430084 The United States edged out Germany after extra time to reach the final of the women’s Olympic football tournament for the first time since 2012.

Sophia Smith’s strike was decisive for the US as the 23-year-old forward raced on to Mallory Swanson’s pass in the 95th minute to slide the ball past advancing Germany goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.

Until then Emma Hayes’ side had struggled to break down a resolute Germany side, who they thrashed 4-1 in the group stage.

Germany, who won the competition at Rio 2016, nearly took the contest to penalties but Laura Freigang’s header was superbly saved by US goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher in the 119th minute.

Former Chelsea manager Hayes’ side will now face Brazil or Spain in Saturday’s final at the Parc des Princes (16:00 BST), while Germany will play for the bronze medal in Lyon on Friday (14:00).

A slip on the balance beam and penalties on the floor cost Simone Biles another gold medal https://www.adomonline.com/a-slip-on-the-balance-beam-and-penalties-on-the-floor-cost-simone-biles-another-gold-medal/ Mon, 05 Aug 2024 20:48:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2429638 Simone Biles slipped off the balance beam and incurred costly penalties on the floor as she failed to win a gold medal for the first time at these Summer Olympics in Paris – which have been serving as an emphatic comeback from disappointment three years ago in Tokyo.

In the individual beam final, Biles lost her balance and fell off the apparatus, costing her a chance to make even more history here in France. Alice D’Amato of Italy took home the gold, Zhou Yaqin of China took silver and Italian Manila Esposito took the bronze.

Later in the floor final, Biles appeared to have put together another stunning performance on an apparatus on which she has excelled here in Paris. But two moments of landing out of bounds cost Biles six-tenths of a point, enough to bring her score down to 14.133 behind gold medalist Rebeca Andrade of Brazil, who scored a 14.166.

t’s a slightly disappointing end to an incredible Games for the American legend. Biles, already the most decorated gymnast of all time, put her name next to a few more records last week when she won the gold in the team event with Team USA, the individual all-around competition and the vault final.

With those wins, Biles became the most decorated American Olympic gymnast of all time – now with 11 total Olympic medals, including seven gold – and also became the oldest American gymnast to win a gold medal at 27.

While it wasn’t the result she wanted, Biles is not walking away from Paris disappointed.

“I accomplished way more than my wildest dreams – not just at this Olympics, but in this sport,” Biles told reporters afterward. “So I can’t be mad at my performances. A couple years ago, I didn’t think I’d be back here at an Olympic Games, so competing and then walking away with four medals, I’m not mad about it. I’m pretty proud of myself.”

She had a chance to tie another incredible mark if she had won both the beam and the floor exercises on Monday. The only two women to ever win nine Olympic gold medals are American swimmer Katie Ledecky and Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina. Biles will have to wait until Los Angeles in 2028 if she wants to try and reach that mark.

It was a tough day on the beam overall for many as multiple competitors fell, including Biles’ Team USA teammate Sunisa Lee.

Lee lost her footing during her routine and slipped, landing with the beam between her legs before tipping over onto the mat on her side. She would end up finishing in sixth place, one spot behind Biles.

Unlike Biles, the 2020 gold medalist in the all-around won’t get another chance on Monday to redeem herself. The beam was Lee’s last competition here in Paris.

“It was a lot of pressure. It was just crazy to see how everybody was going down like that,” Lee said after. “You could feel the tension in the room. The crowd shushing us for cheering. We didn’t like that as it was just so silent in there. I love hearing my teammates cheer for me.”

Biles added that it was a weird beam final and that the silence in the arena – marked by some shushing from the crowd when the gymnasts tried to cheer on their teammates – was a little unsettling. She said she and other gymnasts have previously asked for music to be piped in during the beam finals, but have been denied.

“I don’t know. It was really weird and awkward,” Biles said. “And we’ve asked several times if we can have some music or some background noise, so I’m not really sure what happened there. But yeah, not our favorite. None of us liked it.”

A pressure-packed floor final

The moment marked a massive test for Biles later on Monday when she took on the floor final.

Throughout these Olympics, Biles has emphasized what a key role her mentality has played in bouncing back from disappointment in Tokyo. She acknowledged after the team final that thoughts of her withdrawal from those events three years ago were lingering as she began her vault for Team USA.

Biles, who has talked about the importance of taking care of her mental health during these Games after each of her golden performances, has said she’s speaking with her therapist every morning before competition and religiously every Thursday.

“After all these years of putting in the mental work in, it’s paid off,” Biles said Saturday after winning her latest gold.

She added, “The Olympics is such a draining process for the athletes. It’s multiple days of competitions, so you definitely have to be on top of your mental as well as your physical [health].”

Her routine was full of the power and grace that Biles has made her trademark. Her speed and the torque on her spins were incredible and her flips made her appear to be floating on air. But all that power and speed had a side-effect as the American on two occasions had to step out of bounds in order to catch her footing, incurring those costly penalties.

When she finished, Biles looked to have done more than enough to pip Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade to the gold medal. Andrade’s total score was far below the performances that Biles had been turning in on the floor during her appearances earlier in the competition and, if the American performed to her usual standard, then she was a shoo-in for gold.

But those few tiny stumbles were just enough to give the Brazilian her second Olympic gold medal. Andrade had pushed and pushed Biles throughout these Paris Games, in the individual all-around competition and the vault final in which the American took home the Olympic title.

After Thursday night’s all-around final, Biles said she loved competing against the Brazilian, but Andrade was getting “too close.”

“I don’t want to compete with Rebeca no more. I’m tired,” Biles said at the time. “She’s way too close. I’ve never had an athlete that close, so it definitely put me on my toes, and it brought up the best athlete in myself, so I’m excited and proud to compete with her but … it was uncomfortable, guys. I was stressing.”

Biles and Chiles bow to Andrade, the new queen of the floor

Biles seemed to take the disappointment in stride – her and bronze medalist Jordan Chiles bowed before the Brazilian after the competition, hailing her as the new queen of the floor.

“She’s so amazing. She’s queen,” Biles said of Andrade on Monday. “And first it was an all-Black podium, so that was super exciting for us. But then Jordan was like, ‘Should we bow to her?’ And I was like, ‘Absolutely.’ So we’re like, ‘Are we gonna do it now?’ And then, that’s why we did it.

“But she’s, she’s such an excitement to watch. And then all the fans in the crowd always cheering for her. So it was just the right thing to do. She’s sweet.”

Chiles said she wanted to make sure that Andrade got the praise that she felt the Brazilian deserved and that the new gold medalist is one of the kinder competitors to go up against.

“You know, she’s an icon, a legend herself,” Chiles said. “So I feel like being recognized is what everybody should do when it comes to somebody who’s put in the work, put in the dedication. So yeah, in that moment, I was like … first off, again, yes, it was an all-Black podium. Second off, why don’t we just give her flowers? She’s given, you know, not only has she given Simone her flowers, but a lot of us on, in the United States our flowers as well, so giving it back is what makes it so beautiful. So I felt like it was needed.”

Chiles herself only just got on the medal stand in another dramatic twist. After her routine, she was awarded a score of 13.666, putting her in fifth place. But then she challenged the judges’ score and her difficulty marks were increased by .1 points, enough to move her over Romania’s Ana Bărbosu for the final spot on the podium.

Morocco storm into Olympic semi-finals with emphatic victory over USA https://www.adomonline.com/morocco-storm-into-olympic-semi-finals-with-emphatic-victory-over-usa/ Fri, 02 Aug 2024 23:51:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2429025 Morocco made history at the Paris 2024 Olympics, reaching their first-ever men’s football semi-final with a commanding 4-0 victory over the United States on Friday.

The victory sets up a tantalizing semi-final clash for Morocco against either Japan or Spain in Marseille.

The Atlas Lions showcased their attacking prowess and tactical superiority in a match that will long be remembered by fans at the Parc des Princes.

From the opening whistle, Morocco dominated proceedings, with their high-pressing game and swift counterattacks causing constant problems for the American defense.

The breakthrough came in the 29th minute when Soufiane Rahimi converted a penalty, his fifth goal of the tournament, after Nathan Harriel’s clumsy challenge in the box.

The USA struggled to gain a foothold in the match, with Morocco’s midfield trio of Abde Ezzalzouli, Ilias Akhomach, and Amir Richardson controlling the tempo and creating numerous chances.

The Americans’ brief resurgence early in the second half was quickly extinguished as Morocco stepped up a gear.

Akhomach doubled Morocco’s lead in the 63rd minute, finishing off a well-worked move down the left flank.

The goal seemed to deflate the USA, and Morocco capitalized on their opponents’ fragile state of mind.

Just seven minutes later, Paris Saint-Germain star Achraf Hakimi showcased his class with a sublime solo effort, gliding through midfield unchallenged before finding the bottom corner from outside the box.

As the match entered its final stages, Morocco continued to press, and their efforts were rewarded with a second penalty in stoppage time.

El Mehdi Maouhoub stepped up to convert, putting the finishing touch on a memorable night for Moroccan football.

On this form, the Atlas Lions will fancy their chances against any opponent as they continue their quest for Olympic glory.

As the final whistle blew, the Moroccan players and fans celebrated a historic achievement, while coach Tarik Sektioui’s astute tactics and team selection were vindicated in the most emphatic manner possible.

‘Is she black or Indian?’: Trump questions Kamala Harris’ racial identity https://www.adomonline.com/is-she-black-or-indian-trump-questions-kamala-harris-racial-identity/ Thu, 01 Aug 2024 00:44:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2428249

Donald Trump has questioned Kamala Harris’ racial identity during a heated exchange at a convention for black journalists.

Trump falsely claimed the vice-president and presumptive Democratic nominee had only emphasised her Asian-American heritage until recently when, he claimed, “she became a black person”.

“I didn’t know she was black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black and now she wants to be known as black,” he said at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago on Wednesday.

“So I don’t know – Is she Indian? Or is she black?”

Ms Harris’ campaign said Trump’s “tirade… was simply a taste of the chaos and division” that has characterised his campaign, while the White House called the comments “repulsive”.

Ms Harris is the first black and Asian-American vice-president, with Indian and Jamaican-born parentsShe attended Howard University, a historically black university, and joined the predominantly black Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

She became a member of Congressional Black Caucus after entering the Senate in 2017.

Trump’s claims prompted a heated exchange with ABC News’ correspondent Rachel Scott, one of the moderators of Wednesday’s event.

“I respect either one,” the Republican said in reference to Harris’ racial identity. “But she obviously doesn’t because she was Indian all the way and then all of a sudden she made a turn and she became a black person.”

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said no one “has any right to tell someone who they are, how they identify. That is no one’s right.”

“Who appointed Donald Trump the arbiter of Blackness?” asked Representative Ritchie Torres of New York. He described Trump as a “relic of a racist past”.

The Republican nominee and former president has a history of attacking his opponents on the basis of race.

He falsely accused Barack Obama, the country’s first black president, of not being born in the US.

Trump attacked former UN ambassador and his Republican primary opponent Nikki Haley by falsely claiming she could not be president because her parents were not US citizens when she was born.

Ms Harris has faced a series of attacks since becoming the presumptive Democratic nominee. Many criticized the decision, saying she was chosen only because of her race.

Tim Burchett, a Republican congressman from Tennessee, called her a “DEI vice-president” – a reference to diversity, equity and inclusion programmes.

On Wednesday, Scott pushed Trump to clarify whether he believed Ms Harris was a “DEI hire”. He replied: “I really don’t know, could be.”

Ms Harris has described growing up engaged with her Indian heritage and often visited the country. Her mother also immersed her two daughters in the black culture of Oakland, California – where she was raised, she said.

Trump also attacked Ms Harris’ credentials during the discussion, saying she had failed her bar exam early in her legal career. His comments were met with murmurs from the crowd.

“I’m just giving you the facts. She didn’t pass her bar exam and she didn’t think she would pass it and she didn’t think she was going to ever pass it and I don’t know what happened. Maybe she passed it,” he said.

Ms Harris graduated from the University of California Hastings College of Law in 1989. The New York Times reported that she failed her first attempt and passed at the second. The state bar of California says less than half of first-time test takers pass the exam.

The Chicago discussion began with a contentious back and forth between Scott and the former president. Trump accused the journalist of giving a “very rude introduction” when she began the conversation asking about his past criticism of black people.

She cited Trump calling black journalists’ questions ”stupid and racist” and that he had ”dinner with a white supremacist at your Mar a Lago resort”.

“I love the black population of this country, I’ve done so much for the black population of this country,” he responded.

The former president criticised the conversation hours later on his social media platform. “The questions were rude and nasty, often in the form of a statement, but we CRUSHED IT!” he said.

USA narrowly avoid huge shock against South Sudan https://www.adomonline.com/usa-narrowly-avoid-huge-shock-against-south-sudan/ Sun, 21 Jul 2024 14:52:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2424185

The United States came from 16 points down to avoid one of the biggest shocks in basketball history in a dramatic 101-100 victory over South Sudan in London.

South Sudan led 58-42 in the second quarter before taking a 14-point lead into the break in an Olympics warm-up game at the O2 Arena.

The USA went on a 16-0 run to end the third quarter with a five-point lead but South Sudan battled back to go one point ahead with 20 seconds remaining.

LeBron James hit a crucial lay-up to put his side ahead by one point with eight seconds to go, and South Sudan could not hit a late winner.

The USA are targeting a fifth consecutive men’s basketball gold medal at this summer’s Olympics in Paris, while South Sudan, ranked 33rd in the world, will play in their first Games.

The 12-man USA roster is filled with some of the NBA’s greatest talents, while only four of the South Sudan team have played an NBA game.

But they outplayed the world number one side in the first half, hitting 61% of their shots, while the USA only made one three-pointer.

Marial Shayok scored a game-high 25 points for South Sudan and Charlotte Hornets forward JT Thor hit a three-pointer to put his side 100-99 ahead late on.

But the USA were indebted to James, who capped a fine second-half showing with the game-winner to finish with 23 points.

The United States have won all four of their pre-Olympic exhibition games, with their final warm-up coming against Germany at the O2 on Monday.

“That was better than the blowouts, at least we got tested – I like getting tested baby,” said two-time Olympic champion James, 39.

The USA and South Sudan will face each other in Group C of the 2024 Olympics on 31 July.

“The match was super important because we feel like we can’t be beaten and they showed us we can be beat,” said USA guard Anthony Edwards.

“We have to come ready to play.”

Two Nigerian sisters drown while swimming in a beach in the US https://www.adomonline.com/two-nigerian-sisters-drown-while-swimming-in-a-beach-in-the-us/ Tue, 09 Jul 2024 23:20:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2420076 Aisha Mohammed, 18, and Zainab Mohammed, 17, originally from Nigeria but residing in the Bronx, were reported missing on Friday night, July 5.

They were last seen entering the water in the area of Stillwell Avenue and Boardwalk West, the NYPD reported.

According to police, around 8 p.m. on Friday, the sisters were swimming at Stillwell & Boardwalk West when they vanished from view.

Witnesses told WABC-TV that a rainstorm began, prompting most beachgoers to seek shelter.

However, the two sisters entered the rough ocean waters. One witness mentioned that a man attempted to stop them, but was unable to swim himself. It remains unclear if he knew the victims.

A relative told News 12 that the sisters were at the beach with six of their cousins.

An emergency call for a water rescue was made at approximately 8:10 p.m. Officers, along with emergency responders from the department’s aviation, harbour, and scuba units, arrived on the scene to search for the teens.

Divers eventually pulled the sisters from the water about an hour later, police said.

Both young women were transported to NYC Health and Hospitals/Coney Island, where they were pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The funeral service for Aisha and Zainab Mohammed took place at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9, at the Yankasa Masjid Mosque.

US out of Copa America following defeat by Uruguay https://www.adomonline.com/us-out-of-copa-america-following-defeat-by-uruguay/ Tue, 02 Jul 2024 06:32:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2416445 United States head coach Gregg Berhalter has insisted he is the right person to lead the team to the 2026 World Cup despite his side being knocked out of the Copa America at the group stage.

The US, who are tournament hosts, were beaten 1-0 by Uruguay as they finished third in Group C with only the top two advancing.

Uruguay claimed top spot to secure their quarter-final place, while Panama beat Bolivia 3-1 to progress to the last eight as Group C runners-up.

“We’re bitterly disappointed in the results,” said Berhalter, whose side beat Bolivia in their opening match before suffering defeats by Panama and Uruguay.

“We know that we’re capable of more and at this tournament we didn’t show it. It’s as simple as that.”

Asked if he thought he was the right person to lead the team up to the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico, Berhalter said: “Yes.”

Uruguay won each of their three group games, with Mathias Olivera scoring the decisive goal against the US in Kansas City.

“You have to keep moving forward,” said Berhalter, who was re-appointed US men’s team coach in June 2023 after an internal investigation into his conduct in the wake of allegations made during the 2022 World Cup.

“It’s not where you say OK, this program is doomed. That’s not the case at all. It was a poor performance, we didn’t get the results that we expected and we need to get better.”

However, US Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker has said the performance of the national team at Copa America “fell short of our expectations” and they “must do better”.

“We will be conducting a comprehensive review of our performance in Copa America and how best to improve the team and results as we look towards the 2026 World Cup,” he added in a US Soccer statement.

Uruguay will play the second-placed team in Group D in their quarter-final, while Panama are to play the winners of that group.

Colombia lead Group D on six points, with Brazil second on four points. They play each other in their final group match at 02:00 BST on Wednesday.

Panama make history at Copa America

Panama, who are playing in only their second Copa America, reached the knockout stage for the first time with their victory over Bolivia.

Jose Fajardo put Panama in front and after Bruno Miranda equalised, substitutes Eduardo Guerrero and Cesar Yanis scored to seal their win.

“Football is daily suffering, but today there was a lot at stake,” said Panama boss Thomas Christiansen.

“We knew that not even a win guaranteed that we would make it to the quarter-finals after the first goal.

“Our performance dropped at times, they [Bolivia] began to control the game and they scored. We started to get a bit more anxious.

“But we reacted quickly. Our players were able to overcome those odds and the substitutions made a huge difference.”

Copa America: Weah suffers racist abuse after red card in US loss https://www.adomonline.com/copa-america-weah-suffers-racist-abuse-after-red-card-in-us-loss/ Fri, 28 Jun 2024 10:49:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2414891 The United States Soccer Federation condemned the online racist abuse suffered by several of its players following a 2-1 defeat by Panama at the Copa America.

Monaco striker Folarin Balogun, Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards and Juventus pair Timothy Weah and Weston McKennie were all targeted online after the hosts lost the Group C match in Atlanta.

Weah, 24, was shown a straight red card in the 18th minute after punching Panama’s Roderick Miller in the head in an off-the-ball incident.

The former Lille winger, who apologised to his team-mates for the incident, said it was a “moment of frustration”.

US Soccer said in a statement on X: “There is absolutely no place in the game for such hateful and discriminatory behaviour.

“These actions are not only unacceptable but also contrary to the values of respect and inclusivity that we uphold as an organisation.”

Despite Panama’s numerical advantage, it was the US that took the lead at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium through a superb strike from Balogun – his fifth goal in 14 appearances for the US.

The lead lasted just four minutes as Cesar Blackman equalised from the edge of the box for Panama, who are 43rd in the Fifa world rankings.

The US, ranked 11th, defended admirably but Panama’s pressure told seven minutes from time as Jose Fajardo netted from close range.

Shortly before full-time, Panama were also reduced to 10 men when Adalberto Carrasquilla was shown a red card for a reckless swipe on winger Christian Pulisic.

The US, who co-host the men’s World Cup in 2026 with Canada and Mexico, are now level on points with Panama heading into their final group match against Uruguay on 2 July at 02:00 BST.

The US, who have a better goal difference, need to match Panama’s result against Bolivia to progress to the last 16.

FIFA celebrates Asamoah Gyan’s stunning strike against USA [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/fifa-celebrates-asamoah-gyans-stunning-strike-against-usa-video/ Wed, 26 Jun 2024 12:08:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2413665 FIFA honoured Asamoah Gyan for his stunning goal against the United States during the 2010 World Cup.

The match, played at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, saw Kevin-Prince Boateng open the scoring for Ghana within five minutes.

Despite a spirited USA comeback with a Landon Donovan penalty in the second half, the game ended 1-1 at full time.

In extra time, Asamoah Gyan unleashed a spectacular strike in the 94th minute, securing a historic victory for the Black Stars and sending them to their first-ever World Cup quarterfinal.

FIFA commemorated the moment with a social media post stating, “Baby Jet turned on the burners for this one in 2010!”

Ghana faced Uruguay in the quarterfinals but lost 4-2 in a penalty shootout.

Asamoah Gyan, who represented Ghana in three World Cups, remains the nation’s all-time leading goalscorer and Africa’s top goalscorer in World Cup history.

The former Sunderland, Stade Rennes, Udinese, Al Ain, Shanghai SIPG, Kayserispor and North East United striker announced his retirement from football in June 2023.

My love for friends, peer pressure took me to prison in USA – Showboy [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/my-love-for-friends-peer-pressure-took-me-to-prison-in-usa-showboy-video/ Thu, 30 May 2024 11:07:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2402213 Showboy, the Ghanaian musician who recently returned from prison in the United States of America (USA) has given valuable lessons to Ghanaians living abroad.

Having been deported to Ghana after serving his sentence, he charged Ghanaians abroad not to engage in fraudulent activities – something he said caused his downfall.

“My mom took me to the USA, hoping to control my bad behaviour, but I was already too far gone,” Showboy said in an interview with Jerry Justice on Adom FM.

He recounted his journey in the music industry and how meeting Criss Waddle inspired him to push the AMG movement in 2012.

However, his love for friends and peer pressure led him astray, landed him in prison and he has now been banned from the USA until his 10-year probation ends.

Showboy urged the youth in America to avoid fraudulent activities and take advantage of the opportunities available in the US.

“Don’t sacrifice America for Ghana, otherwise, you will regret it,” he advised.

Showboy cautioned against making too many friends, as it can hinder personal development and lead to negative influences.

“If you follow friends, you will die early,” Showboy warned, sharing his own experiences of losing significant opportunities due to bad company and bad decisions.

Reflecting on his current situation, Showboy said he is struggling and can hardly make ends meet.

Despite these challenges, he remains hopeful and determined not to return to his old life.

I have learnt that, I cannot come here to do fraud, scam, sell drugs, or steal from people,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of staying on the right path.

Deadly Tornado leaves multiple dead, dozens hurt in USA https://www.adomonline.com/deadly-tornado-leaves-multiple-dead-dozens-hurt-in-usa/ Thu, 23 May 2024 03:17:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2398719 Multiple people have been killed and dozens more injured after a tornado ripped through Iowa, according to authorities.

The US National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for the deadly storm system just after 3:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday, May 21.

Initial storm surveys confirmed the tornado in Greenfield — a town of about 2,100 people, according to U.S. Census data — caused “at least EF-3 damage,” according to the agency.

Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Alex Dinkla confirmed the tornado caused “fatalities and injuries within the community of Greenfield,” but did not offer specific numbers, according to a news release from the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

Among those killed are an unidentified couple and a third individual, according to The Weather Channel. Cynthia Jenson, a cousin of one of the victims, said she knew all three individuals.

“It was heartbreaking,” Jenson told the station while describing the damage she witnessed. “I mean, there are houses that are gone that you always saw. You knew the landmarks in town to get to where you needed to go. So yeah, it’s awful.”

Drone footage captured by professional storm chasers Reed Timmer and Mike Scantlin showed the massive twister barrelling through the small town.

Several wind turbines were knocked down by the twister, which storm chasers also filmed.

The Adair County Memorial Hospital sustained damage as well, though teams still “worked swiftly to assist the injured,” according to Dinkla.

The Greenfield Community School District is serving as both a reunification point and a temporary shelter following the storm, according to the sergeant.

“This town has a long road ahead of them, but if their actions today are any indication of what lies ahead, they will emerge stronger and more united than ever before,” Dinkla told reporters Tuesday evening.

A food and water donation site has been established at the Department of Transportation (DOT) Facility at 2313 Highway 92, Dinkla added.

“The community of Greenfield has shown incredible unity during this challenging time, with neighbors and friends displaying remarkable compassion, empathy, and support,” Dinkla said at Tuesday’s press conference.

At least 20 tornadoes touched down across the Midwest on Tuesday, according to ABC News. At least 18 twisters were recorded in Iowa, CNN reported.

Tornadoes have been ravaging the Midwest and Southern states since March, and more are expected on Wednesday. This time, the highest risk for twisters is in portions of central and eastern Texas, southwest Arkansas and northwest Louisiana, according to the NWS Storm Prediction Center.

USA & Mexico withdraw 2027 Women’s World Cup bid https://www.adomonline.com/usa-mexico-withdraw-2027-womens-world-cup-bid/ Tue, 30 Apr 2024 10:08:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2388001 The United States and Mexico have withdrawn their joint bid to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup and will instead focus on bidding for the tournament in 2031.

It comes less than three weeks before the hosts were to be chosen, at a Fifa congress in Bangkok on 17 May.

The remaining bids are from Brazil and a joint one from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.

The US Soccer and Mexican Football Federations said their 2031 bid will call for equal investment as the men’s tournament in a “historic first”.

“The revised bid will allow US Soccer to build on the learnings and success of the 2026 World Cup, better support our host cities, expand our partnerships and media deals, and further engage with our fans so we can host a record-breaking tournament in 2031.” the federations said in a statement.

The US, Mexico and Canada are hosting the men’s World Cup in 2026.

“Hosting a World Cup tournament is a huge undertaking – and having additional time to prepare allows us to maximize its impact across the globe,” said US Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone.

US House approves crucial $61bn war aid for Ukraine https://www.adomonline.com/us-house-approves-crucial-61bn-war-aid-for-ukraine/ Mon, 22 Apr 2024 05:15:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2383928 The House of Representatives has finally approved billions of dollars in new US military aid for Ukraine to help combat Russia’s invasion.

The much-delayed measure had vocal opponents in Congress and it took a fragile bipartisan deal to get the $61bn (£49bn) package through.

Republicans said more than a third would be dedicated to replenishing weapons and ammunition.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the US support as “vital”.

The aid is likely to include air defence systems, mid to long-range missiles and artillery shells.

It is unclear when it will arrive. The package will now go to the Senate, which is expected to pass it within the next few days before President Joe Biden signs it into law.

Ukraine, which relies on Western weapons, desperately needs the aid as it struggles to contain invading Russian troops, who have been making steady advances in recent weeks.

Mr Zelensky said the aid should come as quickly as possible. In an evening address on Sunday, he said that if Ukraine were given the right weapons it could change the situation on the frontline.

“Frontline air defence is as crucial as the protection of our cities and villages. Our long-range capabilities. Our artillery. Our ability to expand the area of our control,” he said. “Every day is important now.”

Alongside replenishing weapons and ammunition systems, Ukraine will also receive more than $9bn (£7.28bn) of economic assistance in the form of “forgivable loans” – ones that do not need to be paid back.

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Since then tens of thousands of people, mainly soldiers, have been killed or injured on both sides, and millions of Ukrainians have had to flee their homes.

Ukrainian soldiers are now running low on munitions and having to ration artillery shells on a front line more than 1,200km (745 miles) long.

Last weekend, the head of Ukraine’s military warned the battlefield situation in the east of the country had “significantly worsened” as Russia intensified its armoured assaults.

Reuters File image of a Ukrainian solider and a military vehicle in a wintry sceneReuters | Ukraine has grown impatient as its ammunition supplies dwindle, with Russia making steady territorial gains

Cheers and applause erupted in the House when the measure passed, by 311 votes to 112, with some Representatives waving Ukrainian flags.

Welcoming the result, Mr Biden praised the bipartisan effort to “answer history’s call” and urging the Senate to approve it quickly “so that I can sign it into law and we can quickly send weapons and equipment to Ukraine to meet their urgent battlefield needs”.

The foreign aid package passed on Saturday also includes:

Nato Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the significant boost in aid would supplement the tens of billions of assistance being provided to Ukraine by European allies.

“Ukraine deserves all the support it can get against Russia,” EU chiefs Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel said in a joint statement.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the package would “make the United States of America richer, further ruin Ukraine and result in the deaths of even more Ukrainians”.

Speaking to the BBC World Service’s Newshour programme, Oleksandr Merezhko, head of Ukraine’s foreign affairs committee, described the vote as a “historic decision” that would “definitely save lots of lives of our civilians and our soldiers”.

“It gives us strength, it gives us courage and resolve to continue to fight, and I’m sure that the situation at the front will soon change in our favour,” he said.

Both Mr Zelensky and head of the CIA William Burns have said that Ukraine will lose the war without American help.

That has been reinforced over the past six months by Russia taking more territory, and other Western allies struggling to fill the gap left by Washington.

Ukraine is now feeling the weight of American support once more.

This is not the silver bullet which will help Ukraine win the war, but it extends its window to fight and keep the negotiating table at bay.

The House vote had been delayed by Republicans for months, with some objecting to sending money overseas instead of dealing with the US-Mexico border issue.

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said he wanted to push the measures through, even if it jeopardised his position.

Getty Images Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson (centre)Getty Images/ Three House Republicans are already calling for Mike Johnson (centre) to be ousted as Speaker

On Saturday, it was passed by a comfortable margin – but those numbers obscure the increasingly sharp partisan divides on the issue.

While all 210 Democrats voted in favour, more Republicans were against the legislation than in favour of it, 112 to 101.

That could spell trouble for Mr Johnson. Three House Republicans are already calling for him to be ousted as Speaker. They may even force a vote on the matter next week.

While the billions of dollars in new aid is expected to sustain the Ukrainian war effort in the months ahead, if Republicans gain more power in Congress – or take back the White House – further US support seems increasingly unlikely.

Separately, the House also passed a bill that would force the China-based owner of the TikTok social media platform to either sell its stake or face a ban in the US.

US President Joe Biden expects Iran to attack Israel ‘sooner than later’ https://www.adomonline.com/us-president-joe-biden-expects-iran-to-attack-israel-sooner-than-later/ Sat, 13 Apr 2024 02:06:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2380627 US President Joe Biden says he expects Iran to attack Israel “sooner than later”, as fears grow of Iranian retaliation over an air strike that killed top commanders early this month.

Israel has not admitted attacking an Iranian consulate in Syria but is widely believed to have been behind it.

US officials have told CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, that a major attack on Israel could happen imminently.

Israel says it is ready to defend itself. Mr Biden told Iran : “Don’t.”

“We are devoted to the defence of Israel. We will support Israel,” Mr Biden said. “We will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed.”

Iran backs Hamas, the Palestinian group fighting Israel in Gaza, as well as various proxy groups throughout the region, including some – such as Hezbollah in Lebanon – that frequently carry out strikes against the Israelis.

On Friday, Hezbollah said it had launched “dozens” of rockets from Lebanon towards Israel. An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman said around 40 missiles and two explosive drones had been launched. No casualties were reported and there were no indications of involvement from other actors.

A US official told CBS the barrage was separate from any expected Iranian attack on Israel.

BBC Security Correspondent Frank Gardner says Iran is deliberately keeping the Middle East and Washington guessing.

Ever since the lethal 1 April strike on the consulate building in Damascus, from which Israel believes Iran was directing its covert arms supplies to Iranian proxies in Lebanon and Syria, Iran’s security establishment has been debating its response.

This is all about calibration. Hit too hard and Israel will respond with devastating force. Go too lightly and Iran will risk being seen as weak and ineffective. From a tactical perspective, it makes no sense for Iran to respond right now, when the region is on full alert and when the US has been telling the world what to expect.

Pragmatists in Tehran and Qom will be urging restraint, while hawks, including the ageing Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, will be demanding a firm response.

But Iran does not want a full-scale war, nor do its neighbours on the Arab side of the Gulf. Governments there have already asked Iran for restraint. The question now, our correspondent says, is whether it is the hawks or the doves who prevail.

The mounting tensions have led countries including the US, UK, India and Australia to warn against travel to Israel. Germany called on its citizens to leave Iran.

The US state department also barred diplomatic staff and their families in Israel from travelling outside the cities of Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Beersheba.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has met members of his war cabinet amid the warnings.

Some Israelis said they were not worried about a potential Iranian attack.

“We know that we are surrounded by enemies, in the south, in the north, the east and the west,” Daniel Kosman told AFP news agency at a market in Jerusalem. “We are not afraid, I can promise you. Look around: people are going out.”

Reuters aftermath of consulate strikeReuters/Israel has not claimed responsibility for the strike in Damascus but is widely considered to have carried it out

The Israeli government has not issued any new advice to its people on top of existing guidance to stock up on water, food for three days and essential medicine.

Israeli radio, however, reported local authorities had been told to prepare for the possibility of an attack, including by assessing the readiness of public shelters.

Last week, the Israeli military cancelled home leave for combat troops, bolstered air defences and called up reservists.

Thirteen people were killed in the 1 April missile strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.

They included senior Iranian military leaders, among them Brig Gen Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander of Iran’s elite Quds Force in Syria and Lebanon.

Israel has not commented but is widely considered to have carried out the attack.

Officials in several countries have been trying to dissuade Iran from launching an attack, fearing it could spark a wider regional war.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has spoken to the foreign ministers of China, Saudi Arabia and Turkey in an attempt to convince them to use their influence with Iran.

After meeting the commander of US Central Command on Friday, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said the bond between the two countries had been strengthened by the threat, adding “we will know how to respond”.

The war in Gaza was sparked when Hamas attacked Israeli communities near the Gaza Strip, killing about 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and taking more than 250 hostage. Israel says that of 130 hostages still in Gaza, at least 34 are dead.

More than 33,600 Gazans, the majority of them civilians, have been killed during Israel’s campaign in Gaza, the Hamas-run health ministry says.

The conflict has also seen Israel trade almost daily fire across its northern border with Hezbollah, while Iran-backed groups in Iraq and Yemen have attempted to hit Israeli territory as well as US bases in Iraq and Syria.

Yemen’s Houthi movement has also attacked shipping in the Red Sea, sinking at least one ship and prompting the US and UK to conduct air strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen.

Earthquake shakes New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, others https://www.adomonline.com/earthquake-shakes-new-york-pennsylvania-new-jersey-others/ Fri, 05 Apr 2024 19:38:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2377601 An earthquake struck the East Coast of the United States on Friday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, causing buildings to shake and rattling nerves from Maryland to Maine.

The USGS measured the quake as a 4.8 temblor with its epicenter near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. It struck a little before 10:30 a.m. ET.

There have been no initial reports of major damage.

James Pittinger, mayor of Lebanon, New Jersey, called the earthquake “the craziest thing I’ve ever experienced.

In an interview with MSNBC, he said he had not received reports of any significant damage so far, but added that the shaking caused his dog to run for cover and objects to fall off his shelves.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said the quake was felt across the state.

“My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day,” she wrote on X.

New York City Deputy Mayor Fabien Levy said that there were no reports of major impacts in the city following the earthquake.

Ground stops were issued at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey and John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, according to the Federal Aviation Administration’s website.

The Port Authority Transit Corp., which operates a rapid transit route between Pennsylvania and New Jersey, suspended service in the aftermath of the quake.

“Crews will inspect the integrity of the line out of an abundance of caution,” PATCO said in an update on X. “Once inspection is complete, service will resume. No timeframe. Updates to follow.”

New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority said that there had been no impact on its service but that teams will be inspecting train lines. New Jersey Transit alerted riders of 20-minute delays due to bridge inspections following the earthquake.

While earthquakes in the northeast U.S. are rare, Buffalo, New York, was struck by a 3.8-magnitude quake in February 2023 — the strongest recorded in the area in 40 years.

A 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck the tristate area in 2017, centered near Little Creek, Delaware, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. And before that, a 5.8-magnitude quake shook central Virginia in 2011, and was felt across much of the East Coast, forcing hundreds of thousands people to evacuate buildings in New York, Washington and other cities.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said in a post on X that the state has activated its emergency operations center and asked the public not to call 911 unless they are experiencing an emergency.

US beat Mexico to win Concacaf Nations League https://www.adomonline.com/us-beat-mexico-to-win-concacaf-nations-league/ Mon, 25 Mar 2024 08:47:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2372546 Tyler Adams and Giovanni Reyna scored as the United States beat Mexico to win the Concacaf Nations League.

The game in Arlington, Texas, was paused three times because of discriminatory chanting from fans.

Concacaf, the governing body for football in North and Central America and the Carribbean, condemned the chanting and said a “significant number” of supporters were ejected.

The US, Mexico and Canada are joint hosts for the 2026 World Cup.

“It is extremely disappointing that this matter continues to be an issue at some matches, particularly in the context of the next two years presenting such a tremendous opportunity to grow the sport in our region,” Concacaf said.

“We will continue to urge fans to support their teams positively and with respect for the opposition and all participants in the game.”

The US have won all three Concacaf Nations League titles since its inception in 2019-20.

Midfielder Adams has spent the majority of the season on the sidelines since signing for Bournemouth in the summer after two surgeries on his hamstring.

The 25-year-old opened the scoring in just his fourth appearance this campaign but was withdrawn at half-time.

Reyna, who joined Nottingham Forest on loan from Borussia Dortmund in January, wrapped up the win with his eighth goal for the national side.

“It never gets old winning titles for your country. I’ll never take any of them for granted,” midfielder Reyna said.

“The group of guys and the energy we have, I always love coming to camp. I’m at a loss for words right now.”

Nearly 90 dead after fierce winter storms strike US https://www.adomonline.com/nearly-90-dead-after-fierce-winter-storms-strike-us/ Mon, 22 Jan 2024 08:01:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2344658 Nearly 90 weather-related deaths have been recorded across the US after the country was pummelled by ferocious winter storms for the past week.

The deaths include at least 25 in Tennessee and 16 in Oregon, which remains under a state of emergency following severe ice storms.

Tens of thousands of people also remain without power across wide swathes of the country.

Icy conditions are expected to continue until the middle of the week.

A total of 89 weather-related fatalities have been recorded across the country over the past week, according to a tally maintained by CBS, the BBC’s US partner.

While the death toll has been greatest in Tennessee and Oregon, fatalities have also been reported in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Washington, Kentucky, Wisconsin, New York, New Jersey and elsewhere.

In one incident in Portland, Oregon last Wednesday, three people were electrocuted to death when powerful winds caused a power line to fall and strike the vehicle in which they were travelling. A baby who was in the vehicle survived.

Other deaths remain under investigation, including that of a person killed in a five-car crash in Kentucky and four in Illinois.

Five people – most of them presumed to be homeless – died over the course of just four days in Seattle, according to the Associated Press.

In Mississippi, the weather has prompted officials to warn drivers to “drive only if necessary” and “be aware of black ice” on the state’s roads. Colleges and universities in the state have delayed students’ return from winter break due to the conditions.

Mississippi officials are also investigating whether online rumours about potential storm-related water shortages prompted residents to store water in their bathtubs. The move caused a temporary drop in water pressure and dry faucets for thousands of residents in Jackson, the state’s capital, which has historic water issues.

Water issues also continue to plague Tennessee, where 400,000 remain under a boil water due to broken pipes in the Memphis area – one of nearly 30 areas that issues similar warnings. The local utility there said it had fixed 41 water mains and more than 4,000 water pipes because of the cold temperatures.

“Use boiled or bottled water for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice” the company said on X. “Tap water is safe for bathing and showering, try to avoid getting it in your mouth.”

Restaurants and bars in the US southern city were reportedly using bottled water to serve customers on Sunday, with some forced to close or offer modified menus.

Across the country in New York, the Buffalo Bills NFL team was – for the second time in a week – forced to reach out to fans for help shovelling snow from the team’s stadium ahead of its Sunday match-up with the Kansas City Chiefs.

By about 1500 local time (2000 GMT), the team’s supporters, known as the Bills Mafia, had reportedly cleared more than 30 inches (76cm) of snow from the stadium.

While electricity has largely been restored in areas of the US that lost it due to the winter weather, tens of thousands of people remain without power across the country.

As of Sunday afternoon, the total included nearly 10,000 people in Oregon, 8,000 in North Carolina, 7,000 in California and 4,300 in Kentucky.

Icy conditions and chilling winds are expected to continue at least through the beginning of the week.

After that, a thaw is expected, with some meteorologists warning that warm air and rain could cause flooding in parts of the Midwest and north-eastern US.

Club World Cup 2025: Expanded 32-team tournament to be played in United States https://www.adomonline.com/club-world-cup-2025-expanded-32-team-tournament-to-be-played-in-united-states/ Mon, 18 Dec 2023 09:57:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2333733 Fifa has announced the first 32-team Club World Cup from 2025 will be played in the United States from 15 June to 13 July.

The tournament will feature clubs from each of the six confederations, with Europe entering 12 teams.

Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City have qualified automatically as the most recent Champions League winners in the four-year cycle.

Arsenal would also be entered if they win the Champions League this season.

Bayern Munich, Paris St-Germain, Inter Milan, Porto and Benfica have also secured places in the tournament in 2025 via the coefficient pathway.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino confirmed the news at a meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Sunday.

The revamped format will be played in the same slot where Fifa has previously held the Confederations Cup for international teams, a year before the World Cup.

Football’s world governing body said the summer dates had been set to ensure the scheduling aligns with the international match calendar and to allow sufficient rest time before the start of the domestic seasons.

The powerful European Clubs’ Association has backed the tournament but Maheta Molango, head of the Professional Footballers’ Association, said Fifa’s persistence to go ahead with the expansion shows a lack of concern for player welfare.

“Players have become pawns in a battle for primacy between football’s governing bodies,” he added. “With no-one willing to take a step back or to work collaboratively to create a sustainable calendar.

“These decisions have consequences – not just for players who are being pushed until they break. But for the future quality of these tournaments, with players becoming injured or withdrawing from games as they make their own decisions about how to manage what have become ridiculous demands.”

In a statement, Fifpro, the world players’ union, said there was also “a disregard” for players’ “personal and family lives”.

It added: “The expanded competition will undercut the rest and recovery time of these players at the end of the 2024-25 season, and further disrupt national employment markets by changing the balance between national and international competitions.

“Players will have to perform at the end of an 11-month season with little prospect of getting enough rest before the following season starts.

“The extreme mental and physical pressures at the pinnacle of the game is the principal concern of players with multiple clubs and national team competitions, leading to exhaustion, physical injuries, mental health issues, diminished performance, and risks to career longevity.”

Fifa also announced a new Intercontinental Cup competition from December 2024, which will see the winners of the Champions League face a team that comes through intercontinental play-offs.

The Club World Cup is currently held annually, mid-season, with seven teams from six confederations.

Treble winners City, who won their first Champions League trophy in June, face Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds in Saudi Arabia on 19 December.
