The Ghana Education Service (GES) has barred all teachers and invigilators linked to malpractice during the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) from taking part in this year’s exercise, as more than 620,000 candidates prepare to sit for the exams starting Monday.

Addressing a press briefing, the Director-General of GES, Ernest Kofi Davis, said the move forms part of efforts to restore credibility and public confidence in the examination process.

“The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially barred all supervisors and invigilators implicated in examination malpractice during the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) from participating in this year’s exercise,” he stated.

He explained that many of the affected officials are still under investigation and have been strictly prohibited from playing any role in the conduct of the 2026 exams. “Investigations into the alleged malpractice cases are nearing completion,” he added, noting that final disciplinary decisions will be announced soon.

Mr Davis stressed that the Service is prioritising integrity over convenience. To ensure strict supervision, he said GES has mobilised 21,791 vetted invigilators to oversee the exams across the country.

This year’s BECE, scheduled to run from May 4 to May 11, 2026, will see a total of 620,141 candidates sit the exams nationwide, comprising 304,349 boys and 315,792 girls from 20,395 schools. The figure represents a 2.7 percent increase compared to the 603,328 candidates recorded in 2025.

He assured the public that all logistics have been put in place and that the exclusion of compromised officials will help guarantee a fair and transparent process. The GES has also rolled out a nationwide sensitisation campaign across all 16 regions to educate students, parents and teachers on the consequences of examination malpractice.

Mr Davis further indicated that several cases of malpractice from last year are still being handled, with processes underway to sanction those found culpable.

On the issue of placement, he said there will be a few adjustments to the school selection process this year. According to him, the placement exercise will begin immediately after the exams end on May 11, 2026.
