The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced a temporary suspension of all trading activities across parts of the city as it prepares to hold the May edition of the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise on Saturday, May 2.

The exercise, scheduled to begin at 6:00 a.m. and continue until completion of work, will be carried out across the Accra Metropolis as part of efforts to improve sanitation, prevent flooding and promote environmental responsibility.

According to a public notice issued by the Assembly, the clean-up will focus on major areas including Agbogbloshie, the Central Business District, Guggisberg Avenue, Tuesday Market, Chorkor, Kaneshie, the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange and surrounding communities.

The AMA stated that no trading activities will be allowed during the exercise period. All shops, stalls, table-top businesses, hawking and other commercial activities are expected to remain suspended until the clean-up is completed.

The exercise will include sweeping of streets, clearing of drains and road curbs, desilting, and removal of refuse from markets and public spaces.

The Assembly stressed that enforcement will be strictly applied, warning that individuals who defy the directive, obstruct the exercise or engage in trading activities during the period will be sanctioned under the relevant bye-laws.

It further noted that Assembly Members are expected to lead clean-up activities in their electoral areas to ensure coordination and active community participation.

The AMA has therefore urged traders, transport operators, food vendors, residents and all stakeholders to fully participate in the exercise, adding that maintaining a clean city is critical ahead of the rainy season to reduce flooding and protect public health.
