Illegal mining activities in the Suaman District of the Western North Region are causing severe destruction to major river bodies, prompting calls for swift government intervention.

A civil society group, the Forum for Accountability and Development, has raised alarm over what it describes as escalating environmental damage, particularly to Rivers Bia, Sui, and Fanoma.

Speaking to Adom News, the Western North Regional Director of the Passport Office, Joshua Alabi, disclosed that about 90 percent of the applications received so far are new registrations, with only 10 percent representing renewals.

He explained that the trend reflects growing interest among residents in acquiring passports, following improved access to services within the region.

Mr. Alabi assured that the office remains committed to delivering efficient and timely services to meet the rising demand.

He also encouraged residents to take advantage of the centre, stressing that passports are not only essential for international travel but also serve as a vital identification document for various official transactions.
