Former Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Sam Pyne, has stated that he would support any retaliatory action by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) if the party returns to power and decides to respond to what he describes as unfair treatment by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Pyne criticised what he described as selective enforcement of the law and the alleged targeting of individuals perceived to be sympathetic to the NPP.
According to him, state institutions are being used to intimidate political opponents over comments made about the President and government officials.
“Nowadays when you are picked up, if it’s about the president, wherever you spoke about it, they will come and pick you up from wherever you are to headquarters, wasting resources. It is pettiness,” he said.
Mr. Pyne stated that although he does not support insults or abusive language in political discourse, the current developments appear politically motivated.
“I don’t subscribe to insults or foul language, but what is going on looks like it’s state-sponsored,” he added.
He further accused the government of double standards, claiming that some individuals who openly insulted NPP leaders were previously protected by members of the current administration.
“There is one guy in the US always insulting politicians, including former President Kufuor. When he came to Ghana, the same people in government now were the ones shielding him,” he alleged.
According to him, such actions could provoke retaliation from aggrieved party supporters.
“You think the people seeing this won’t like to respond? Arresting the people is not what is going to resolve the issue,” he stated.
Mr. Pyne argued that similar comments made against the NPP while the party was in government were tolerated without arrests or intimidation.
“When people are insulting the NPP, then you turn a blind eye. We tolerated all their talks,” he said.
He also questioned how criticism directed at members of the judiciary could amount to creating fear and panic.
“How is someone saying you are a political judge causing fear and panic?” he asked.
Mr. Pyne maintained that fairness and equal treatment under the law are necessary for good governance.
“If my party returns to power and they want to retaliate for what the NDC is doing, I will support it 2,000% because until we all come to a level field and do what’s right, this is not how to govern a country,” he stated.
