A grieving mother, Mrs Ansong, has given a heartbreaking account of the final moments of her daughter, Abigail Opoku, who died at the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital after going into labour.
Speaking in an emotional interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, she said her daughter repeatedly pleaded for a caesarean section (CS) as her condition worsened.
“Around 3 p.m., I went to see my daughter. She told me she was suffering and asked me to tell the nurses and doctors to perform a CS because she could not bear the pain anymore,” she said.
Mrs Ansong said her attempts to get help from medical staff were ignored.
“When I told the nurse, she said she was coming, but she never returned. When I went back again, she shouted at me to go out and leave her,” she recounted.
She said she was forced to leave the ward and stayed outside praying for her daughter’s survival.
“I went outside and was praying for my daughter,” she added.
According to her, she was later called back into the ward and was devastated by what she saw.
“I saw my daughter in the labour ward, very weak, vomiting blood and soiling herself. She was lying on the floor, and nurses were around her,” she said amid tears.
Mrs Ansong further alleged that when she asked how her daughter could be saved, she was instructed to go and buy malt.
“I asked the nurses what they were doing to save her, and they told me to go and buy malt. I went and bought it,” she said.
She added that the situation worsened shortly after.
“When I returned, she was struggling to breathe and was dying in front of me. They then told me to go and buy medication and asked me to leave again,” she alleged.
“I was on my way back when I saw my daughter dying in front of me, and nobody could help her,” she cried.
The circumstances surrounding Abigail’s death have sparked public concern, with allegations that she may have been denied a timely caesarean section.
In response, the Ghana Health Service has constituted a committee to investigate the reported maternal death at the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital.
The Service has assured the public of a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident.
