The government is set resume the next phase of evacuating its citizens from South Africa on Sunday, July 26, as efforts continue to bring home Ghanaians affected by ongoing xenophobic attacks.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the latest phase of the exercise will cover approximately 1,000 Ghanaians and will be conducted in batches.
According to the Ministry, the first evacuation flights are expected to arrive in Accra on Sunday, July 26, and Monday, July 27.
The evacuation will begin with Ghanaians who have already registered with the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria and expressed their willingness to return home with government support.
The Ministry said priority would be given to women, children, the elderly, persons with medical conditions and students.
It also encouraged Ghanaians in distress to contact the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria for assistance with travel arrangements and other evacuation-related support.
The government expressed appreciation to the Ghanaian leadership of the Church of Pentecost in Pretoria and Johannesburg, as well as Global Kingdom Investment Pty. Ltd., for providing free temporary accommodation to Ghanaians who fled their homes while awaiting evacuation.
According to the Ministry, the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has reactivated its emergency consular response system and remains on standby to assist any Ghanaian seeking to return home safely.
The statement further urged Ghanaians living in South Africa to remain calm, avoid areas experiencing unrest, refrain from engaging in confrontations, and cooperate fully with officials to ensure the evacuation proceeds smoothly.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and welfare of its citizens, assuring the public that every effort is being made to ensure no Ghanaian is left behind in harm’s way.
