MAY DAY MESSAGE TO WORKERS OF GHANA
By the Chief Executive Officer, Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC)

Fellow Workers of Ghana,
On behalf of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, I extend warm greetings and heartfelt appreciation to all workers across the country as we join the global community to commemorate .

Today is a powerful reminder of the dignity of labour and the invaluable role that Ghanaian workers play in building and sustaining our nation.

From our farmers and artisans, to our teachers, healthcare professionals, security services, public servants, and private sector workforce, your dedication, resilience, and sacrifices remain the backbone of Ghana’s socio-economic development.

As a Commission, we recognise that the aspirations of workers go beyond wages. Workers seek fairness, equity, improved conditions of service, job security, and, importantly, a system that rewards productivity and performance. These expectations are legitimate, and they continue to guide our work.

This year’s May Day finds us at a critical point in Ghana’s public sector compensation reforms. The transition towards the establishment of an Independent Emoluments Commission represents a bold and necessary step towards building a more transparent, fair, and sustainable pay administration system. This reform is aimed at addressing longstanding disparities, strengthening institutional credibility, and ensuring that remuneration in Ghana is anchored on equity, productivity, and national affordability.
We are also intensifying efforts to link pay to performance and productivity across the public service. Our vision is to build a system where excellence is recognised, innovation is rewarded, and every worker sees a clear connection between effort and outcome. This is essential not only for fairness but also for national competitiveness and economic transformation.

However, let me emphasise that sustainable improvements in wages and conditions of service must be anchored on productivity, fiscal discipline, and social dialogue. We therefore call for continued collaboration among Government, Organised Labour, and Employers to sustain industrial harmony and protect the long-term interests of the Ghanaian worker.

To our hardworking men and women, I urge you to remain committed to excellence, integrity, and professionalism in your respective roles. Your contribution is not only a service to your employer but a service to Ghana and future generations.

As we celebrate today, let us renew our collective commitment to building a fair, productive, and prosperous Ghana, where the dignity of labour is upheld, and every worker is given the opportunity to thrive.

Happy May Day to all workers of Ghana.

Signed
Dr. George Smith-Graham
