The Head Pastor of the Cedar Mountain Chapel of the Assemblies of God Church, Rev. Stephen Wengam, has heavily criticised activities of fake prophets.

He has described prophets who engage in such acts as charlatans who need psychiatric treatment.

According to him, those prophets mount the pulpit in the name of God only to dupe innocent Christians.

He said these prophets always preach about prosperity and wealth to lead their poor members into evil acts.

“Some of these prophets, their acts should simply tell you they have mental problems. We have pampered them a lot and they end up deceiving members. We need not wait for the prophets to give poison to their members before we take decisions on them,” he said on Accra-based Neat FM.

According to Rev. Wengam, such conducts by pastors has the tendency to make people lose trust in the church.

Quoting 1 Timothy 3:1 in the Bible, Rev. Wengam said anyone who aspires to be a minister of God must be blameless.

“It is our responsibility to protect the vulnerable and represent Christ well,” he noted.

He wants a legislative instrument that will regulate operations of ministers of the gospel.

The 1992 constitution guarantees freedom of association of any form.

But Rev Wengam believes a legislative instrument which will compel ministers of the gospel to belong to credible associations and help regulate their activities will be in the right direction.
