According to the Minister, security agencies had already recovered about 11,000 firearms from civilians even before the formal amnesty period was introduced. However, the launch of the programme encouraged additional individuals to hand over weapons without facing legal consequences.

Speaking on TV3 on Sunday, March 15, Muntaka said the initiative has yielded encouraging results.

“That’s why we came in with the amnesty. And when we rolled out the amnesty period, the statistics showed that we were able to retrieve over 4,000 guns in the hands of civilians,” he stated.

He explained that the weapons collected through the exercise are currently being catalogued and marked by the relevant security agencies as part of preparations for their eventual destruction.

The Minister indicated that the amnesty programme forms part of a broader government strategy to tackle the spread of illegal firearms and strengthen public safety across the country.

He noted that removing unlicensed weapons from circulation is crucial in supporting the work of security agencies in addressing violent crime.

The Ministry of the Interior had earlier announced an extension of the gun amnesty programme from January 15 to January 30, 2026, to allow more individuals to voluntarily surrender illegal or unregistered firearms.

The initiative was first declared on November 18, 2025, and took effect on December 1, 2025, as part of efforts to reduce the proliferation of illicit arms and enhance national security.

GIS recruitment: 1,000 to be selected from 180,000 applicants – Interior Minister https://www.adomonline.com/gis-recruitment-1000-to-be-selected-from-180000-applicants-interior-minister/ Fri, 13 Mar 2026 06:37:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2639959 The Interior Minister, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, has revealed that only 1,000 applicants will be recruited into the Ghana Immigration Service out of more than 180,000 young people who applied during the recent recruitment exercise.

Addressing the Parliamentary Press Corps in Parliament on Wednesday, he attributed the low acceptance rate to the institution’s limited infrastructure and logistical capacity.

He said: “A total of over 180,000 young men wanted to join the Ghana Immigration Service. But the interesting thing is that today, the Ghana Immigration Service, from the Comptroller-General to the last officer, stands at 18,300 — less than 20,000 — yet you have 180,000 opting to join.”

The Interior Minister noted that the Service’s training and accommodation facilities could accommodate only about 1,000 new recruits during the ongoing exercise.

“Unfortunately, because of the physical space, we could only have enough space,” Alhaji Muntaka stated.

High turnout for security recruitment reflects unemployment among youth – Interior Minister https://www.adomonline.com/high-turnout-for-security-recruitment-reflects-unemployment-among-youth-interior-minister/ Thu, 12 Mar 2026 14:25:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2639848 The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed, has attributed the overwhelming number of applications for Ghana’s security services recruitment to the limited job opportunities available to young people.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, the Minister said the turnout for the recent recruitment exercise far exceeded expectations.

According to him, the Ghana Police Service, which has a workforce of about 41,000 personnel, received more than 130,000 applications.

The Ghana Immigration Service, with roughly 18,000 staff, recorded over 181,000 applicants, while the Ghana Prisons Service, which employs around 14,000, saw about 71,000 applications. The Ghana National Fire Service also received approximately 124,000 applications, despite having a workforce of just 17,000.

Mr. Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed explained that the high interest is not solely due to young people wanting to join the security services but is largely driven by the lack of employment opportunities in the country.

“There are not enough jobs available. If there were sufficient employment opportunities, many of these youth would not have applied. This clearly shows that the issue is not just about a desire to join these forces; it is primarily due to the limited jobs in the market. The number of applications far surpasses the positions we had anticipated,” he said.

There are protocols in security recruitment — Henry Quartey admits https://www.adomonline.com/there-are-protocols-in-security-recruitment-henry-quartey-admits/ Thu, 12 Mar 2026 11:25:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2639747 Former Interior Minister Henry Quartey has acknowledged that recruitment slots within the Ghana security services are sometimes sold to interested applicants, despite official procedures meant to ensure fairness.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Quartey explained that while there are official protocols for security recruitment, individuals who are allocated slots often end up selling them.

He noted, “It is often difficult to identify exactly who is responsible for selling such slots,” highlighting the challenges in monitoring the process.

Quartey recounted an incident from his time in office when he allocated a recruitment slot to an Imam in his Ayawaso Central constituency. The intention, he said, was for a qualified Muslim youth in the community to benefit.

“I gave the slot to the Imam so that a qualified Muslim youth could benefit from it, but later I realized the slot had been sold,” he revealed.

Using this example, Quartey emphasized that recruitment opportunities can be misused despite the system’s design to maintain fairness and transparency.

I didn’t take any government land as Interior Minister — Henry Quartey https://www.adomonline.com/i-didnt-take-any-government-land-as-interior-minister-henry-quartey/ Thu, 12 Mar 2026 10:31:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2639719 Former Interior Minister and former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, has denied claims that he personally benefited from government land allocations during his tenure.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Quartey addressed concerns surrounding land allocation and clarified his position amid ongoing discussions on security recruitment and public lands.

“I didn’t take any government land during my time as Interior Minister. All the lands I allocated were for public use and meant to benefit the general public, not for my personal benefit,” he stated.

Mr. Quartey highlighted that during his tenure, he allocated approximately 15 acres of land at Agbogbloshie to facilitate the construction of a hospital under the government’s Agenda 111 initiative.

“The land was specifically intended to serve the public through improved healthcare infrastructure,” he added.

He further revealed that after leaving office, he was evicted from the property where he had been residing, and the structure was demolished just a few days later.

Mr. Quartey emphasised that all his decisions regarding land allocation were made with public interest in mind and reiterated that he did not take any government land for personal use.

MCE denies land capture claims against Interior Minister amid Asokore Mampong protest https://www.adomonline.com/mce-denies-land-capture-claims-against-interior-minister-amid-asokore-mampong-protest/ Wed, 25 Feb 2026 12:04:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2634874 The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Asokore Mampong in the Ashanti Region, Ben Abdullah Alhassan, has dismissed claims that Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak has seized a parcel of land allegedly belonging to the Ashanti Muslim Women Association.

His comments follow a recent protest by some members of the association, who claim ownership of the land in question. On Saturday, February 22, 2026, the group took to the streets of Asokore Mampong to express their displeasure over what they described as encroachment on their property.

Speaking on Luv FM, Mr. Alhassan clarified that the project on the land commenced less than three weeks ago, making allegations of forceful takeover unfounded.

“In fact, the profile for the project began less than three weeks ago. So anybody who begins to harbour the impression that the Honourable Member of Parliament has forcefully taken it from them is wrong,” he stated.

The Ashanti Muslim Women Association maintains that the land is jointly owned by them and the Ibadur Rahman Association and was originally designated for the construction of what is now known as the Ibadur Rahman Academy Senior High School.

Following the establishment of the school in Buoban, management reportedly faced severe financial and resource challenges, including difficulties in paying teachers, which led to the handover of the institution to the government.

However, the Ashanti Muslim Women Association contends that the decision was taken without their consent and is demanding the return of their share of the land.

Their concerns escalated after they discovered that a new project had commenced on the portion they claim, prompting the recent protest.

Mr. Alhassan, however, emphasized that the Minister, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for the area, has engaged both parties several times in an effort to resolve the matter amicably.

He cited a meeting held on December 26, 2025, during which the Minister met with members of the association to discuss possible solutions, some of which were reportedly accepted by certain members.

“He even sat with them and was literally begging. There were a few of them who agreed with him,” he said.

The MCE added that security at the site has been intensified to prevent further destruction of property, noting that any damage would ultimately be borne by the state.

He urged the association to pursue their grievances through lawful means.

“Nobody is stopping you from exploring all the options available to you, but please ensure that your actions are within the law,” he advised.

The dispute remains unresolved as both associations continue to assert their claims, while local authorities work toward a lasting settlement.

The Minister inspected the facility as part of the Ministry’s supervisory mandate, observing the ongoing screening exercise and interacting with applicants and officials overseeing the process.

He stressed that the recruitment is being conducted strictly in line with laid-down procedures and cautioned applicants against any attempts to bypass the approved processes.

Addressing applicants, Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak warned against deception and the activities of fraudulent middlemen who extort money with false promises of recruitment, noting that anyone involved in such acts would be arrested and prosecuted.

He explained that a centralised payment system has been introduced to allow applicants to track their payments and receipts, thereby reducing the risk of fraud.

To further protect the integrity of the exercise, the Minister revealed that strong monitoring mechanisms have been put in place, with oversight from the Criminal Investigations Department, the Police Intelligence Directorate, the National Signals Bureau, and other security agencies.

The Interior Minister commended the commander and officers in charge of the screening centre for the smooth organisation of the exercise and praised the discipline of the applicants, urging security agencies to adopt best practices in recruitment and personnel management.

Naa Koryoo has denied convoy attack by Hawa Koomson in 2024 Kasoa election violence – Muntaka https://www.adomonline.com/naa-koryoo-has-denied-convoy-attack-by-hawa-koomson-in-2024-kasoa-election-violence-muntaka/ Thu, 06 Nov 2025 09:52:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2596864 The Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mubarak, has stated that investigations into the 2024 election violence in the Awutu Senya East Constituency (Kasoa) found no evidence to support claims that the convoy of incumbent MP, Philis Naa Koryoo Okunnor, was attacked during the polls.

Naa Koryoo had alleged that a vehicle belonging to the then-sitting MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, chased and fired at her car, resulting in the death of one person.

However, speaking during an update on the 2020 and 2024 election violence report, the Minister clarified that the parliamentary candidate was not near the scene of the incident, contrary to earlier reports suggesting her convoy came under fire.

“Honourable Philis Naa Koryoo Okennor denied that her convoy was attacked. She was nowhere near the scene of the incident,” Mubarak stated.

He explained that several persons believed to have been directly involved in the Kasoa incident have refused to cooperate with the Election Security Task Force, including Mohammed Ali and others reportedly in a Mahindra pickup truck that allegedly fired shots during the altercation.

According to the Minister, Mohammed Ali has since been flown abroad for medical treatment, making it difficult for investigators to obtain his statement.

Mr. Mubarak further disclosed that the late Yusif Larri Idriss died from gunshot wounds sustained during the violence, adding that those who were in the pickup with him likely hold key information about what transpired.

“The driver of the Mahindra vehicle has been traced, and further investigations are ongoing,” he said.

The Interior Minister assured that the Task Force will continue its investigations until all facts surrounding the Kasoa violence are uncovered.

The Awutu Senya East constituency, particularly Kasoa, has long been considered a political hotspot, with election-related disturbances reported during both the 2020 and 2024 general elections.

Security Officers implicated in 7 election deaths – Interior Minister https://www.adomonline.com/security-officers-implicated-in-7-election-deaths-interior-minister/ Tue, 04 Nov 2025 19:04:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2596269 The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has disclosed that investigations into violent incidents during Ghana’s 2020 and 2024 general elections found that security personnel were involved in seven of the 15 deaths recorded nationwide.

Presenting the government’s findings on electoral disturbances on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, the Asawase MP explained that the fatalities occurred during police and military operations aimed at restoring order at polling stations and collation centres.

“The investigation established that three of the cases, resulting in four deaths, are traceable to the use of firearms by armed police patrol teams. Military personnel were also found responsible for three cases that led to the deaths of three persons when they intervened to restore calm to chaotic crowds,” he said.

According to the Minister, the conclusions were drawn from a detailed report prepared by a Special Investigation Task Force set up to examine all election-related deaths from both electoral cycles.

The task force reviewed police dockets, conducted forensic and ballistic examinations, and carried out field visits to verify the specific circumstances surrounding each fatality.

Mr. Mubarak added that while some deaths resulted from clashes between rival political supporters, evidence clearly indicated the involvement of security officers in several instances.

He emphasized that all such cases would be addressed according to due legal process.

The Interior Ministry’s report forms part of ongoing efforts to promote accountability, strengthen security operations during elections, and prevent future loss of life during Ghana’s democratic exercises.

Gun registration system remains manual, the process very daunting – Interior Minister https://www.adomonline.com/gun-registration-system-remains-manual-the-process-very-daunting-interior-minister/ Tue, 30 Sep 2025 14:33:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2584000 The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has acknowledged that Ghana’s firearm registration system remains fully manual, creating significant challenges for applicants and law enforcement agencies.

Speaking before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, the Minister explained that obtaining a firearm license is a lengthy and cumbersome process. Applicants must submit a written request to the Interior Minister, after which the case is referred to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) or the Police CID for background checks. Fingerprinting and fee payments follow before a license can be issued.

He noted that firearm licenses are issued on a calendar-year basis, which complicates renewals under the current manual system.

“One of the challenges we face is that everything is manual. For instance, you may obtain your license in November, but by December it has expired. The law makes it valid only within the year, from January 1 to December 30. This makes the process very daunting,” he explained.

The Minister disclosed that discussions are ongoing to digitize the licensing system to simplify operations, close loopholes, and reduce the burden on both gun owners and regulators.

Earlier, Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno also highlighted challenges with renewals, noting that while licenses are valid for one year, many gun owners fail to renew them promptly.

“It isn’t until incidents occur that the police discover that certain licenses have lapsed,” he said.

PAC Chairperson Abena Osei Asare, who raised the issue during the hearing, emphasized the need for a more efficient system to ensure compliance and effective monitoring of firearms across the country.

According to the Minister, Mensah received over GHS 400,000 in study leave benefits but resigned without fulfilling his bond obligation to the state.

Mr. Muntaka further disclosed that the guarantors of Mensah’s study leave, as well as the Fire Commissioner of the Gaming Commission, will also be held liable for repayment to ensure the government recovers the funds.

The Minister warned that senior police officers who overlook infractions such as unearned salaries and study leave breaches will face delayed promotions as a deterrent.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno told the committee that recoveries from study leave infractions had reduced outstanding liabilities to GHS 23,178.

PAC Chairperson Abena Osei Asare commended the Interior Minister’s firm stance and cautioned government employees who exploit study leave benefits without serving their bonds, warning that such conduct will not be tolerated.

Minority demands urgent briefing over recent killings https://www.adomonline.com/minority-demands-urgent-briefing-over-recent-killings/ Mon, 28 Jul 2025 07:37:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2560302 Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has called on the Speaker of Parliament to summon the Minister for the Interior for an immediate closed-door meeting, following a disturbing rise in violent killings across the country.

Addressing Parliament on Friday, Annoh-Dompreh described the situation as alarming, stressing that swift and coordinated action is required to address what he considers a growing national security concern.

“It is very sad today; our colleague related a sad matter, killings of innocent citizens—and Speaker, I say this with a heavy heart,” he stated on the floor.

He pointed out that many recent cases involve missing persons whose bodies are later discovered under suspicious circumstances.

“We have been reading news of people going missing, and the next day or two, their bodies are found. We’ve read a number of them. I can cite them, but it is a national security matter, and I need to be cautious how I relate to it,” he explained.

Relying on Order 60, the Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP formally requested that the Interior Minister—and potentially the National Security Minister—be invited to brief Parliament privately.

“So now I want to come under Order 60 and pray that we invite the Minister for Interior and the national security not to meet us at plenary. You should meet us at close seating,” he urged.

He further revealed that the spate of killings was not isolated, citing recent incidents in the Ashanti Region.

“Even yesterday, we had two killings again, in the Ashanti Region. Even today, it has happened again. Then we can have a closed session for him to brief us. We may also have some good suggestions,” he said.

Annoh-Dompreh emphasised the role of Members of Parliament in sharing valuable intelligence from their constituencies to help security agencies.

“We are representing various constituencies, and Members of Parliament may be carrying unique and diverse information which could be made available to aid the work and operation of the Minister,” he stated.

He concluded by urging the Speaker to act swiftly, stating, “So I think this is a matter. We can’t, as a people’s representatives, we can’t cross over. And I pray that the Speaker invites the Interior Minister to meet colleagues at a closed sitting.”

The violence, which erupted on Friday, July 11, saw unidentified men storm the St. Peter’s Polling Centre, assaulting voters and election officials, including former Fisheries Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

The chaos led to a temporary suspension of voting in 19 polling stations before additional security personnel were deployed to restore order and allow the polls to continue.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on Monday, July 14, Minister Muntaka reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance stance on political vigilantism.

“I can assure you that not my party, not any group—we will not sit and allow the resurgence of vigilantism,” he stated.

He revealed that video evidence of the disturbances has been forwarded to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), with instructions to act swiftly.

“Videos have been sent to the IGP, and he has been directed to ensure that all those involved are brought to book,” he said.

Muntaka emphasized that political connections will not shield perpetrators from the consequences of their actions.

“We will not condone lawlessness from anyone, whether within or outside our party. Under the leadership of H.E. John Dramani Mahama, no vigilante group will be permitted to operate,” he added.

The Ablekuma North rerun has sparked renewed national conversations about electoral violence, prompting calls for urgent reforms and enforcement of anti-vigilante laws.

Speaking during a working visit to the Northern Region on Wednesday, May 21, the Minister revealed that the number of unauthorized firearms in civilian possession has reached alarming levels.

“The number of arms in the hands of our citizens is getting out of control. It’s becoming a major headache for the Peace Council, the police, and other security agencies,” he stated.

“At the least provocation, you hear a gunshot. How are people getting access to these weapons?”

The Asawase MP decried the growing incidents of indiscriminate gunfire and emphasized the urgent need to register all firearms currently in circulation to aid in tracking and ensure accountability.

He called for a nationwide collaborative effort, stressing that government alone cannot address the issue effectively. He also advocated for the deployment of modern technology to monitor the importation and distribution of arms.

“Let’s get private partners involved. Technology is readily available—we can use it to detect who is importing and distributing these weapons. The time to act is now, to make our country safer,” the Minister concluded.

Establishment of 24-hour economy policing system will guarantee security – Interior Minister https://www.adomonline.com/establishment-of-24-hour-economy-policing-system-will-guarantee-security-interior-minister/ Sat, 22 Mar 2025 15:41:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2517771 The Minister of the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has announced the establishment of a dedicated secretariat for the implementation of a policing system to guarantee security for the 24-hour economy.

He said the initiative aligned with the government’s commitment to driving economic progress and ensuring Ghana remained competitive in the global economy.

The Minister made the announcement on Friday, March 21, during a Regional Police Commanders’ Conference in Accra.

Mr. Muntaka explained that the secretariat would develop and implement sustainable policing models to guarantee security around the clock.

“Whether it is in our bustling cities or in our rural areas, economic activities do not cease, and neither can our vigilance. We are laying the groundwork for a system that is dynamic and responsive to the unique challenges posed by a 24-hour economy,” he said.

“As we embrace this new approach, the safety of businesses, workers, and citizens will be prioritized, ensuring that every hour of the day is protected.”

The Minister said the initiative would also be a key tool in the fight against crime and the protection of economic assets nationwide.

He expressed confidence in the Ghana Police Service’s leadership and its commitment to making the vision of a secure and vibrant economy a reality.

He pledged to ensure that policing was not only efficient but also accessible and responsive to the needs of citizens, hence the three-day orientation for all regional and unit police public relations officers by the Police Administration.

“The orientation will provide officers with the knowledge and skills to better engage with the community, share crucial information, and create a visible and tangible impact in the lives of the people we serve,” he said.

Mr. Muntaka said strengthening communication channels and ensuring that officers were well-equipped would foster a more proactive and transparent approach to crime prevention and public safety.

It would also bring policing closer to communities, in line with international best practices, and foster a sense of trust and collaboration between the police and the people, he said.

However, the Minister raised concerns over private security assignments within the police force, calling for greater oversight.

“You go around our country and you see so many of your men and women protecting private individuals, whether in their homes, providing them with runners to lead them through the city.

“How much checks have you done on them? How much checks have you done on the businesses they carry out? I want to suggest to you that we need to come up with a measure that will safeguard and streamline this activity across the country,” he said.

The Minister revealed that he had already written to the Inspector-General of Police requesting a report on all private individuals receiving police protection.

He also noted the cash-in-transit security concerns, calling for stricter regulations on police-escorted cash transport vehicles.

“After the initial inspections by the police ballistic unit, what happens to those onboard the vehicles? Where are they serviced? Where are they parked at the end of the day?

“The drivers, what kind of training have you given them? Is it not a tool that can be used after the banking activity to also worsen the crime situation in our country?” he questioned.

Alhaji Muntaka revealed that since assuming office, he had overseen the deportation of over 107 foreign nationals involved in fraudulent activities and illegal mining.

He, therefore, directed regional police commanders to work closely with immigration officials to ensure the immediate repatriation of any foreigner found guilty of such offenses.

He advocated mandatory firearm training for individuals issued gun licenses, proposing a new policy where firearm applicants must complete certified training before obtaining a license.

The Minister reaffirmed the police administration’s commitment, under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to eradicating violent crimes and ensuring perpetrators faced the full force of the law.

He acknowledged the appointment of Commissioner of Police Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah as a Technical Advisor to the Ministry, stating that her expertise and innovative approach to policing would be instrumental in shaping new crime-fighting strategies.

Mr. Muntaka reassured international investors and businesses of the government’s commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for economic activities.

He urged regional commanders to remain dedicated to their roles and work collaboratively with stakeholders to build a future where peace and security serve as the foundation of national success.

Mr. Yohuno, on his part, commended police officers for their sacrifices and contributions to national security.

He acknowledged the transformations the Ghana Police Service had undergone over the years but stressed the need for continuous innovation in response to evolving security challenges.

“Security is not seen but felt. Our work is only complete when the people of Ghana feel safe and confident in the protection we provide. Therefore, complacency has no place in our profession,” he said.

The IGP urged personnel to work tirelessly to enhance Ghana’s security and uphold the trust placed in them by the citizenry.

He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the Prisons Service and announced that 15 pick-up vehicles would soon be presented to the Service as part of 50 vehicles the Interior Ministry plans to distribute.

Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq.), expressed gratitude for the donation and highlighted the need for officers to receive the contagious allowance.

Why national security operatives attempted to arrest Akwatia MP – Interior Minister reveals https://www.adomonline.com/why-national-security-operatives-attempted-to-arrest-akwatia-mp-interior-minister-reveals/ Tue, 18 Mar 2025 15:44:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2516181 Interior Minister, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has defended the attempted arrest of Akwatia Member of Parliament (MP), Ernest Yaw Kumi, by national security operatives.

Mr. Mubarak clarified that the national security personnel were acting on a warrant issued by the Koforidua High Court through the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

“The Koforidua High Court on February 19, 2025, issued an arrest warrant for Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia constituency. The warrant was served to National Security through the NIB Eastern office, via the National Security Coordinator,” he explained.

The Asawase MP made this clarification while answering questions in Parliament on Tuesday, March 17, 2025. He emphasized that the officers’ actions were in line with the court order.

“Right Honourable Speaker, the circumstances surrounding the attempted arrest of the Member of Parliament by the officers of the NIB were therefore carried out in accordance with the orders of the High Court, per the warrant dated February 19, 2025, for contempt,” he stated.

The Koforidua High Court had issued a bench warrant for Mr. Kumi’s arrest after convicting him of contempt of court. The conviction followed his disobedience of an interim injunction issued on January 7, 2025, which barred him from being sworn in as the Member of Parliament-elect for Akwatia due to an ongoing legal challenge to his election.

Despite the injunction, Mr. Kumi appeared in Parliament on January 7 to be sworn in. However, the Supreme Court, in a 4-1 majority decision on February 26, stayed the High Court’s ruling, pending the final determination of a motion seeking to quash the conviction.

Kenya’s President nominates Interior Minister as new deputy President https://www.adomonline.com/kenyas-president-nominates-interior-minister-as-new-deputy-president/ Fri, 18 Oct 2024 14:11:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2461787 Kenya’s President has nominated Interior Minister, Kithure Kindiki as his new deputy, a day after the Senate voted to impeach Rigathi Gachagua.

President William Ruto nominated Kindiki on Friday, and parliament unanimously approved him.

However, the High Court then issued an order stopping Gachagua’s replacement until Thursday when cases filed against the impeachment will be heard.

Gachagua was impeached while he was in hospital late on Thursday.

The former deputy President’s supporters have criticised the impeachment process as rushed after senators voted against allowing additional days to give Gachagua time to recover and appear before the Senate.

His impeachment highlighted divisions within the ruling party and friction between Ruto and Gachagua over government policy.

Kindiki, 52, had been a frontrunner for deputy President during the 2022 elections. Like Gachagua, he hails from the vote-rich Mount Kenya region.

Kindiki is a close ally of the president and has held the interior ministry post through Ruto’s two years as leader. He previously served as senator for Tharaka-Nithi County.

Gachagua filed a court application on Friday seeking to stop his replacement, the Reuters news agency reported, citing court documents.

Judge Enock Chacha Mwita then issued an injunction, suspending the process until Thursday.

Historic move

In an unprecedented move, a majority of lawmakers in the National Assembly last week voted to impeach Gachagua on 11 charges, which included corruption, undermining the government and stirring ethnic hatred.

As a result, he lost retirement benefits and cannot hold public office again.

The Senate voted to remove him on Thursday despite Gachagua’s absence from the proceedings as a result of illness.

His lawyer Paul Muite said Gachagua had been hospitalised with “intense chest pains” and had urged the Senate to pause proceedings for a few days.

Gachagua, who has maintained he is not guilty, had launched a legal challenge against the impeachment proceedings in the High Court, but Judge Eric Ogola said the process could go ahead.

He had backed Ruto in his 2022 election win and helped secure a large block of votes from populous central Kenya. He has spoken of being sidelined amid widespread reports in local media that he has fallen out with Ruto as political alliances have shifted.

Ruto sacked most of his cabinet in July and appointed members of the opposition to what he called a unity government after nationwide protests against tax increases in which more than 50 people were killed.

Interior Minister denies allegations of plot to rig December elections https://www.adomonline.com/interior-minister-denies-allegations-of-plot-to-rig-december-elections/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 12:53:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2439003 The Interior Minister, Henry Quartey, has refuted claims by the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, that he intends to rig the general elections in December.

Mr Gbande alleged that, the Interior Minister held secret meetings with the Deputy Inspector General of Police and the Director of the National Intelligence Bureau to manipulate the electoral process.

But according to the Interior Minister, these allegations are “baseless” and “unfortunate,” and designed to undermine public confidence in the government.

In addition, he demanded a retraction from Mr Gbande and warned of potential legal action if the claims are not retracted.

“I think this statement is very unfortunate coming from a Deputy General Secretary of a big political party like the NDC. He is making a very wild allegation. He is inciting the public. We have to get him to retract. If he doesn’t do so, then I will put legal redress to show beyond all reasonable doubts that the Interior Minister, National Intelligence Bureau and the Deputy IGP is planning to rig elections. This cannot continue.”

However, Mr Quartey reassured the public of the government’s commitment to a peaceful transition of power if the NPP loses the election.

“If people think that they want us to go, we will hand over peacefully but so long as we live and we remain in power and the security apparatus and architecture of this country remains, nobody will misbehave in this country. If they do, we will let the law deal with them,” he said.

The summons concerns issues related to the Ghana Prisons Service Barracks at Cantonments and the Ghana Prisons Service land at Roman Ridge in Accra.

This development follows a series of demonstrations announced by the Coalition of La Associations and the GaDangme Coalition Against Land Injustice.

The protests, scheduled to begin on Tuesday, aim to address what the groups perceive as unethical land seizures by political entities in the Greater Accra Region.

The groups have raised concerns about the Prisons Service lands at Cantonments, where a private developer plans to redevelop the facilities and use part of the land for private business.

Speaking to Citi News, Peter Lanchene Toobu, the Deputy Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, emphasized the need for first-hand information before visiting the area.

“There have been several complaints of a businessman who has taken over the government’s land and the complaints are unfriendly, and as a committee responsible for this particular sector, we find it necessary to have a fair idea of what is happening and also listen to the people.

“In fact, we invited the director general of the Ghana Prison Service to appear before the committee and give us some briefing. Probably that will help us when we move into the area, we will have some courage and we will be able to tell Ghanaians what the state of affairs are”.

National Security didn’t demolish wall around Prison Service land – Interior Minister https://www.adomonline.com/national-security-didnt-demolish-wall-around-prison-service-land-interior-minister/ Fri, 05 Jul 2024 22:15:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2418430 The Interior Minister, Henry Quartey has refuted claims that a staff at the office of the Vice Presidency used national security operatives to demolish a fence wall around lands belonging to Ghana Prisons Service.

On June 24, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Okudzeto Ablakwa took to his social media page X, formerly twitter and alleged that Prof Kwaku Appiah Adu had taken over lands belonging to Ghana Prisons Service.

Following stiff opposition from the prisons service, Prof Adu took the matter to court claiming to be the legitimate owner of the piece of land.

Following stiff opposition from the prisons service, Prof Adu took the matter to court, claiming to be the legitimate owner of the piece of land.

However, speaking on the floor of Parliament on July 5, the Interior Minister refuted the claims, arguing that his outfit had yet to receive official notice of the demolition.

Mr Quartey argued that the said professor was a man of great repute.

“The gentleman in question is a distinguished gentleman, and for the records, when this matter started, he was not working for the Vice President. Mr Speaker, the fact that somebody is working for a politician does not restrict him or her from pursuing his own private business.”

“There isn’t anything to substantiate that national security operatives, for that matter, have been assigned or rather approached by the same gentleman to demolish, and thirdly, it has not come to my attention,“ Mr Quartey added.

The Interior Minister explained that due to the severe living conditions at the Ghana Prison Service barracks, where junior officers and their families endure cramped spaces, often sharing single rooms and sleeping in confined areas, the ministry has decided to redevelop the area after reviewing various proposals from developers.

“The service has for the last 20 years received proposals from developers for the development of the headquarters and the barracks in order to address accommodation challenges for the officers but has been unsuccessful,” he said.

He added that in 2021, the Ghana Prisons Service received a proposal from a developer for the development of the cantonment barracks.

“The proposal met the expectation of the service, with each accommodation ranging from 1 bedroom to 3 bedrooms being provided for 440 officers as opposed to the current 330 within the barracks. The project will also see the construction of a new headquarters building, and all other existing structures will be redeveloped into modern facilities.”

He explained that the proposal has been received and endorsed by the prison officers and prison council service.

However, the North Tongu MP, Okudzetu Ablakwa, questioned “I don’t believe that this is some Father Christmas who has descended upon the prison service to do them a favour. What is he getting in return? Is he getting portions of the land? If he is, what size, what acres? Let’s know what the consideration is.”

In response, the Interior Minister said, the developer would receive land deeds for some portions of the lands.

Mr Ablakwa said per the Lands Commission statement the land had been allocated to Prof Adu.

“So the same government, conflicting status, the Interior minister, and the land minister. What are you going to do to really resolve this matter and get the Lands Commission to align with the position of your ministry so that we can protect the Institute lands, which belong to the Ghana Prison Service?

“This gentleman, Professor Kweku Appiah Adu, who is a senior advisor to the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, his Excellency, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, according to the Ghana prison service in these documents I have, it has gone to demolish portions of the fence that you have told us about.”

“The fence you are constructing. Are you aware that he has allegedly led national security operatives? That is what the Ghana prison service is alleging that they are, national security operatives, and they have demolished portions of their fence, seeking to take over. Are you aware of this development, and what are you doing to assist the prison service?”

The Minority Leader, Cassiel Ato Forson on Monday, May 20, claimed that NPP parliamentary candidates have been given 30 slots each to pack the security agencies.

But his claim has since been dismissed by Interior Minister, Henry Quartey, explaining that the government has not announced recruitment exercises in the last few years because it is clearing a backlog.

However, speaking to journalists on Wednesday, May 22, Dr Forson insisted the Minister’s claims are false.

According to him, instead of the Interior Minister addressing the concerns raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority caucus about the serious implications of the illegal recruitment, he chose to peddle outright falsehoods.

“Honourable Quartey’s insinuations that members of the NDC have benefitted from the questionable recruitment practice without providing any shred of evidence is a clear attempt to confuse the issue and divert attention,” he said.

Dr Forson argued that the Interior Minister’s announcement that there is going to be a recruitment this year without public advertisement and the sale of forms, because the government was clearing backlogs of previous recruitment, is untenable and outrageous.

He questioned Mr Quartey on how the clearing of the backlogs will ensure that persons who might have exceeded the cut-off age for recruitment or may have developed certain health issues are not recruited into the security services.

“The people of Ghana cannot be deceived in the name of the so-called persons waiting to be recruited into the security service. …There is no such backlog.”

The Minority Leader stressed his side will file a motion demanding a parliamentary probe into recruitment into the security services.

“We can assure the Minister for Interior that the Minority will bring a motion to demand full-scale enquiry into the recruitment into the security service since 2017.

“This inquiry will seek to uncover any instance of corruption, favouritism, nepotism or irregularities in the recruitment process and ensure that going forward, such unacceptable practices are irradiated in the recruitment into our security services,” Dr Forson said.

The Minority Leader noted that his outfit remains steadfast and cannot be silent, not even by the Interior Minister’s “veil threats and cheap blackmail.”

“The NDC’s concern has been and still remains a lack of transparency and fairness in the recruitment process into the Ghana Security Services.

“We highlighted credible information suggesting that the ruling NPP is manipulating recruitment processes to favour its parliamentary candidates with about 30 slots allocated to each of them for the various security agencies including the Police Service, the Immigration Service, the Fire Service and the Prison Service. This issue is serious and deserves a substantive response, not a deflection,” he stressed.

Dr Forson, therefore, challenged the Interior Minister to publish the names of persons that he claims were forwarded by the NDC MPs for the secret recruitment.

“If the minister fails to provide these names, then his statement must be seen for what they are – baseless, ridiculous, favourous, provocative and indeed false,” he said.

But the Majority in Parliament has dismissed claims by the NDC that the government is illegally recruiting NPP footsoldiers into the security agencies.

They said that these moves are attempts by the NDC to inflame tensions ahead of the 2024 election.

Deputy Majority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei warned the NDC against making false claims that could destabilise the country’s peace and security.

She said that the claims by the NDC are so baseless that they defy any mathematical logic, as the government cannot afford to recruit nearly 10,000 persons into the security agencies.

Karim Benzema files defamation suit against French interior minister https://www.adomonline.com/karim-benzema-files-defamation-suit-against-french-interior-minister/ Wed, 17 Jan 2024 11:50:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2342977 French football star Karim Benzema has filed a defamation lawsuit against France’s interior minister for accusing him of having links with the Muslim Brotherhood, local media reports.

Gérald Darmanin said in October that Mr Benzema “has a notorious link” with the Sunni Muslim Islamist group.

The comment “undermines” his honour and reputation, Mr Benzema’s lawyer said.

The Muslim Brotherhood is banned in several countries, including Egypt, Russia, and Saudi Arabia.

Mr Darmanin’s comment in October came after the player tweeted his support for the people of Gaza as “victims again of unjust bombardments which spare neither women nor children”.

Noting his failure to express similar sympathy for the estimated 1,300 Israeli victims that Hamas killed on 7 October, Mr Darmanin said the former French striker was “well-known for his links with the Muslim Brotherhood”.

“We are fighting the hydra that is the Muslim Brotherhood because it creates an atmosphere of jihadism,” the politician told conservative TV channel CNews.

Karim Benzema, 36, who plays in Saudi Arabia and is a Muslim, quickly issued a denial and threatened legal action against the minister for slander.

In his 92-page complaint, reported widely in French media on Tuesday, he says he “has never had the slightest link with the Muslim Brotherhood organisation, nor to (his) knowledge with anyone who claims to be a member of it”.

The former Real Madrid star added: “I am aware of the extent to which, because of my notoriety, I am being used in political games, which are all the more scandalous given that the dramatic events since October 7 deserve something quite different from this type of statement.”

His lawyer Hugues Vigier told French outlet RTL that the footballer is the victim of “political exploitation” and accused the interior minister of “sowing division in France”.

Mr Darmanin is yet to comment on the complaint.

He has previously targeted Karim Benzema for other reasons, including his refusal to sing the French national anthem and his “proselytising on social networks”.

The Muslim Brotherhood was founded about 80 years ago in Egypt. It has provided the rationale for many modern-day Islamist organisations, including Hamas.

Primarily an ideological movement with no formal structure, and while it is banned in many countries, it is not restricted in most of the European Union.

The group’s influence in Europe is mainly seen via front organisations which campaign for Islamic causes like the right of women to wear head-coverings.

Sam George raises concerns over delayed allowances for MPs’ bodyguards https://www.adomonline.com/sam-george-raises-concerns-over-delayed-allowances-for-mps-bodyguards/ Sat, 09 Dec 2023 09:42:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2330059 Ningo-Prampram Member of Parliament(MP) Samuel George, has raised concerns about the delay in paying the 30% allowance promised to police officers assigned to guard lawmakers.

He believes this delay is negatively impacting the morale of these officers and requested the Minister of Interior, Ambrose Dery, be summoned to address Parliament on the matter.

Mr George highlighted the issue while contributing to the presentation of the upcoming week’s business statement by the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

He stated, “There is a critical issue that is affecting the morale of bodyguards assigned to MPs in the house. The issue of current mistreatment is because when the signal came for them to be transferred from their various units to the parliamentary protection unit, that signal came with a certain benefit of 30% allowance to be paid to them.”

He further added, “It appears that the majority of our police are not receiving that and is affecting the well-being of bodyguards. So if the Interior Minister can be brought to come and explain to us what that is, we will be grateful,” he said.

He revealed 27 suspects were arrested out of which eight were discharged upon advice from the Attorney General while 15 are on bail awaiting the AG’s report and advice.

A-G advises Interior Ministry to compensate Ejura shooting victims https://www.adomonline.com/a-g-advises-interior-ministry-to-compensate-ejura-shooting-victims/ Fri, 07 Oct 2022 10:17:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2169549 The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has advised the Ministry of the Interior to pay compensation to three victims of the Ejura shooting incident.

Checks at the Office of the Attorney-General by Myjoyonline.com revealed that a letter dated July 22, 2022, was written to the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, setting out the basis and formula to be used in paying the compensation to the victims.

It would be recalled that the Justice Koomson Committee, after investigating the Ejura shooting incident, recommended the formation of a Medical Board to assess the injured victims to inform the computation of compensation payable to them.

A-G advises Interior Ministry to compensate Ejura shooting victims
Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Dame

The three-member board submitted its assessment report to the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice to determine the parameters.

That notwithstanding, the A-G requested the victims to also provide all receipts covering their medical bills relating to injuries sustained during the incident. These were duly submitted.

The victims are; Louis Ayikpa, 30, Nazif Nuhu, 20, and Awal Mesbawu, 16.

According to MyJoyOnline’s sources, Mr Ayikpa and Mr Nuhu made claims for compensation.

The A-G also made an assessment in respect of the third victim, Awal Mesbawu.

After his assessment and computation of the compensation, Mr Godfred Dame, in the said letter advised the Interior Minister – using similar cases – on how to go about the payment.

Administrative processes hindering compensation

On July 6, 2022, the Interior Minister blamed the non-payment of compensation to victims of the Ejura shooting incident on administrative processes.

His revelation was in response to a question posed by the Ejura Sekyeredumase MP, Bawa Braimah Mohammed, who said the victims suffer just to make ends meet.

“After the three-man committee set up to investigate the unfortunate incident in Ejura had submitted their report, my Ministry wrote to the Ministry of Health informing them of the three persons that sustained various degrees of injury during the Ejura disturbances on 29th June 2021, to facilitate the process of compensating the victims.

“The Ministry of Health subsequently requested that the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital which attended to the victims submits a report on the extent of injury to the victims to inform the decision on the quantum of compensation due then,” he explained.

Victims agitated

The victims of the shooting incident were agitated over what they say is the Attorney-General’s delay in ensuring payment of their compensation.

During court proceedings on Tuesday, they also lamented the inaction of the prosecutor who has been absent from the court for several months.

The Asokwa District Court which has been hearing the case says it is still waiting for advice from the Office of the Attorney-General (A-G) for committal processes to commence at the high court.

It is reported that the prosecutor was again absent in court on Tuesday because the advice from the A-G is not ready.

According to him, he has taken keen notice of how some police service personnel forcefully collect unlawful money from some drivers while performing their responsibilities on the road.

Mr Dery warned personnel involved in the act to desist from it as the Ghana Police Service is among the professions which are highly respected globally.

“We are prepared and internationally, you are highly recognized,” he said.

“I am assuring you people that the Ghana Police Service is a service we should all be proud of,” he added.

Meanwhile, the western north regional police commander, DCOP Ernest Akrasi Mensah, indicated that despite their inadequate resources as a new region they have done their best to change the old image of Sehwi and the western north region at large.

He said the two cedis being taken by the police is enough.

“The two two cedis is enough,” Mr Dery noted. The minister said this during his working visit to the Western North regional police headquarters at Sehwi Wiawso as part of his tour to the region.

Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, has joined the clarion call to urge support for the controversial Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy).

With the levy touted as a youth-oriented policy, Mr Dery, who is also the Nandom Member of Parliament, has reiterated it will help to reduce youth unemployment in the country.

“One of the reasons why we are collecting this tax is to provide our boys and girls, sons and daughters, with employment and you say we shouldn’t collect it?

“Now you have NABCo people asking to be paid. That is better than having an unemployed graduates association. At least, they are paid to look up and we are sure we will pay them,” he said at the Wa edition of the government’s E levy sensitisation Town Hall Meeting on Monday.

He stressed the levy will help the government continue with its intervention programmes including the Free SHS, School Feeding Programme, Subsidies for farmers among others.

The Minister further described as offensive, the proposal of the National Democratic Congress for government to return to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for financial assistance.

“The most offensive one is that we should go to IMF. We went to IMF before. What was the result? High youth unemployment,” he queried.

Mr Dery further berated the stance of the opposition on the bill, questioning “Our opponent said their argument against the E-Levy is to protect the poor but how much money has the poor?”

This was on Tuesday, July 27, 2021, at the Ministry’s conference room, following the completion of its job on Friday, July 16, 2021.

The Chairman, Justice Koomson, while presenting the report, said they have delivered on their mandate.

He explained they have proferred some recommendations and expressed hope that the government will implement them.

“I want to let you know that we attached serious importance to the work and dedicated ourselves to all issues with meticulous attention and details.

“Having assured ourselves after listening to 22 witnesses and reviewed volumes of documents including audio and videos, we have come with our findings and proffered some recommendations. And we hope the government through your good self [Interior Minister] will give a good ear to them and try to accept and implement them,” he said.

Why Fire Service personnel arrived in taxi to douse flames at Akyem Begoro [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/why-fire-service-personnel-arrived-in-taxi-to-douse-flames-at-akyem-begoro-listen/ Thu, 08 Jul 2021 19:25:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1984560

Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, has justified why the Fire Service officers at Akyem Begoro travelled in a taxi cab with extinguishers to put out fire.

Social media on May 28, 2021, was inundated with a video of the personnel arriving at an emergency scene in a chartered taxi to douse flames.

The video sparked many reactions as the fire-fighting specialists arrived at the scene without their fire trucks filled with water or other extinguishing agents but only basic fire extinguishers, which amounted to nothing.

But according to the Minister, the Fire Service Officers went to the fire scene in a taxi cab because at the time of the incident, the station’s water tender number FS706 was temporarily out of commission.

He explained the water tender was being worked on by the Eastern Region Maintenance team as a result of clutch failure.

Mr Dery revealed this while responding to a question by MP for South Dayi, Rockson Dafeamekpor.

He said at 10:25 hours on the said day, a distress call was received at the Begoro Fire Station reporting an outbreak of fire at Bethlehem, a suburb of Akyem Begoro involving a single room apartment.

However, he assured Parliament that the faulty water tender had been fixed and returned to the station.
