President Nana Akufo-Addo has admonished delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to elect executives who have the unity of the party at heart.

According to him, they cannot afford to be drawn back by activities of party executives whose sole aim is to thwart the NPP’s dream of winning the 2020 general elections.

Following the election of Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyapong as National Chairman and General Secretary respectively in Tamale, the division in the NPP became very visible as they were said to be against then-candidate Akufo-Addo.

Given the incessant acrimony in the party, NPP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) resolved to suspend Mr Afoko for allegedly working against the interest of the party.

Kwabena Agyapong and second National Vice Chairman, Sammy Crabbe, were also indefinitely suspended for publicly rebelling against the party’s decision to indefinitely suspend Afoko.

It resulted in a division in the party but the party’s quick regrouping months ahead of the 2016 elections, saw them claim victory ahead of a seemingly more united National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking at the party’s National Delegates Conference in Koforidua, the Eastern Region capital on Saturday, President Akufo-Addo urged delegates not to “repeat the post-Tamale mistakes”.

In his view, delegates must elect officers whose principal goal will be to unify party and government and strengthen its base and ensure “we give Ghana good governance”.

The President said they could not afford to lose focus at a time Ghana’s economy is being touted as one of the fastest growing economies in Africa.

The only way to remain in power, President Akufo-Addo added is for delegates to put the NPP’s interest first then their personal parochial interest.
