Black Sherif has done it again! The Ghanaian music star has once again stamped his authority on the country’s biggest music stage after clinching the Artiste of the Year crown at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards for the second time in his career.

He becomes the 27th Artiste of the year since the inception of the award scheme and the sixth artiste to win twice aside Akyeame, Kojo Antwi, VVIP, Sarkodie and Stonebwoy

This year’s win didn’t come quietly. It came on the back of a sweeping performance that saw him pick up five awards in total, as he turned the night into his personal showcase consistency and cultural impact.

He was crowned Artiste of the Year after edging out a competitive lineup that included Sarkodie, Medikal, Wendy Shay and Diana Hamilton; names that have all shaped Ghana’s music conversation in their own right.

Beyond the headline award, Black Sherif’s night was stacked. He won Songwriter of the Year, Best Hip Hop Song of the Year, Best Afropop Song of the Year, Album of the Year and capped it all with the Artiste of the Year title.

It is a clean sweep that reflects how far his sound has travelled from its early roots.

In 2019, a young Black Sherif uploaded “Cry for Me” on YouTube; a track unpolished but unmistakably full of emotion and intent. It was the beginning of a voice that didn’t quite fit into boxes, and didn’t try to.

Then came 2022, the turning point. “Kwaku the Traveller” became Black Sherif breakthrough with his song climbing to No. 1 on both Ghanaian and International Music charts, pushing him into continental spotlight and turning him into one of Africa’s most talked-about new voices.

Since then, his presence in the Artiste of the Year conversation has been constant, earning multiple nominations and keeping him firmly in the elite circle of Ghana’s top performers.

What makes this latest victory stand out is the shift in narrative. Unlike previous editions where he dominated pre-event conversations, this time he entered the night without being the loudest name in the build-up.

Yet by the end, his music had clearly done the talking.

With two Artiste of the Year titles now to his name, Black Sherif is no longer just part of Ghana’s new wave story, he is one of its defining pillars!
