Ghanaian music star Black Sherif has picked up his first Songwriter of the Year award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards with his track “Sacrifice,” marking a major milestone in his growing career.
The win comes in one of the most respected categories of the night, which rewards lyrical depth and storytelling over popularity or performance.
Black Sherif edged out a strong field that included “Have Mercy II” by Kofi Kinaata, “Take Me Home” by Cofi Boham, “Obi Nnim (Obinim)” by Akwaboah, “Send Them a Prayer” by Stonebwoy, and “Abeberese” by Ko-Jo Cue.

The win is particularly significant because it disrupts a category long associated with Kofi Kinaata’s dominance.
Kinaata, widely regarded as one of Ghana’s most consistent and celebrated songwriters, has held the title for five consecutive times, making Black Sherif’s triumph one of the standout talking points of TGMA 27.
Kinaata made history as the first artist to achieve this feat, maintaining a record-breaking streak in the category, until the Konongo hitmaker, Black Sherif arrived.
