The Catholic Standard, the only Catholic National Weekly Newspaper in Ghana has, as part of their 80th anniversary celebration, organized a voluntary blood donation exercise and free health screening for people residing in the Sowutuom area in Accra.

The anniversary which was based on the theme “The Catholic Standard, 80 years of Promoting Integral Human Development in Ghana” saw people from all walks of life, taking part in many activities to mark the celebration over the weekend.

Patrons were screened for breast, eye, nose and ear-related problems. There were also screenings for malaria, blood group types and blood pressure after which free drugs were also administered.

In an interview with the board chairman of the Catholic Standard, Sir Samuel Kofi Asubonteng he said the exercise also formed part of of the paper’s CSR and a way of addressing the health needs of those residing in the community.

“As part of the 80th anniversary we organized this outreach for the community around where we are. It’s our social responsibility. We thank them for showing love because it’s for their benefit…” Sir Kofi noted.

There were special packages for all volunteers who made time to be part of the event.

Sir Samuel further urged the patrons to purchase their weekly newspaper, saying the Catholic Standard tends “to promote the integral human development in Ghana…”

“It’s a weekly paper. It’s a 16 page. We may not be able to cover all programs and as far as evangelism is concerned it means a lot to us…” he said.
