A senior laboratory assistant at Abura Dunkwa District Hospital in the Central region has been arrested for allegedly selling the blood of pregnant women and children for ritual purposes known in the local parlance as ‘sakawa’.

The suspect, Stephen Nyan allegedly focuses on pregnant women who visit the hospital for antenatal, and their newly born babies.

Adom News’ Kofi Adjei who followed the story reported that the young man draws extra blood from the women and sells it off to the sakawa boys between GHC5,000 and GHC10,000, depending on the quantity.

Some of the residents, who corroborated the story, claimed most of the women who visited the lab either die during childbirth or lose their babies because their blood was sold off to the ritualists.

They suspected the laboratory technician so one of them posed as a sakawa boy and went to him to buy blood.

The suspect, Stephen Nyan agreed to supply him the blood so they quickly informed the police and he was arrested.

Upon interrogation, he pleaded guilty to the offense and has been remanded at the Ankaful prisons pending police investigations.
