Bawumia was a driver’s mate and could not overrule the driver – Adwoa Safo mounts strong defence https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-was-a-drivers-mate-and-could-not-overrule-the-driver-adwoa-safo-mounts-strong-defence/ Mon, 15 Dec 2025 16:29:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2610625 Former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has mounted a strong defence of former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, dismissing claims that he was responsible for the economic challenges recorded under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

Addressing NPP delegates, Adwoa Safo urged party members to disregard narratives blaming Dr Bawumia for economic mismanagement, insisting that his role in key economic decisions was limited.

She maintained that he remains the most suitable candidate to lead the party going forward.

She argued that the shaping and execution of economic policy were largely influenced by other senior officials, particularly the former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

Questioning attempts to shift blame onto Dr Bawumia, she asked, “Was Dr Bawumia the finance minister? Were we not in government when some MPs complained that because of the way the economy was being mismanaged, the finance minister should be changed? Didn’t he damage everything before he was changed? So how can we blame this on Bawumia?”

Adwoa Safo stressed that Dr Bawumia did not have the authority to override decisions taken at the highest levels of government.

Using a metaphor to illustrate her point, she said, “He was only the driver’s mate and could not overrule the driver, even if the driver was not performing well.”

Her remarks come amid criticisms from some flagbearer aspirants in the ongoing NPP presidential race, who have attributed the party’s economic record in government to Dr Bawumia.

The NPP is expected to elect its presidential candidate on January 31, 2026, ahead of the next general elections, with Dr Bawumia among five contenders vying for the party’s flagbearer position.

Mr. Kufuor made these remarks when Sarah Adwoa Safo, former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya and daughter of the late Apostle, led a delegation to pay a courtesy visit to him at his residence at Peduase.

Reflecting on the life and legacy of Apostle Safo, the former President noted that every person has a divine mission, and the renowned inventor and industrialist fulfilled his with excellence.

“Apostle lived his life well and told his own story before his passing,” Mr. Kufuor stated, commending the unity and resilience of the Safo family while acknowledging that the late Apostle “nurtured his children well.”

He recounted his personal engagements with Apostle Safo during his presidency, including bestowing on him a state honour in recognition of his contributions to national development, though the Apostle was unable to attend the ceremony.

Mr. Kufuor also recalled participating in one of Apostle Safo’s technology exhibitions in Gomoa in September 2024, which he said attracted international attention, a reflection of the global reach of the Apostle’s innovations and influence.

Vowing to pay his respects, the former President said he would attend the 40th Day observance at the University of Ghana, Legon, and urged the family to give Apostle Safo a dignified burial befitting his extraordinary achievements.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Sarah Adwoa Safo expressed deep appreciation to Mr. Kufuor for his continuous support and mentorship.

I was sidelined; removed from MPs’ platform – Adwoa Safo [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-sidelined-removed-from-mps-platform-adwoa-safo-audio/ Thu, 20 Mar 2025 12:49:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2517070

Former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament (MP), Sarah Adwoa Safo, has opened up about the mistreatment she faced from New Patriotic Party (NPP) members.

The former Gender Minister disclosed that she was sidelined from committee work and removed from the parliamentary platform after her dismissal as Gender Minister on July 28, 2022.

Some individuals even labeled her a traitor.

“At one point, I was not given any parliamentary committee. After I complained, I was assigned to the Judiciary Committee, but meetings were never called,” she shared in an interview on Accra-based Okay FM.

She further explained that while it’s the new leader’s responsibility to consult predecessors on committee preferences, her case was different. “I was just in parliament and even removed from the MPs’ platform with claims that I was a traitor,” she lamented.

Adwoa Safo expressed disappointment over being wrongly accused, despite her dedication to the party, and emphasized that she never abandoned her ministerial and parliamentary duties.

This comes after she recently revealed she was moved to the backbench as a first-time MP following her removal as Deputy Majority Leader.

Evans Nimako sends SoS message over Adwoa Safo https://www.adomonline.com/evans-nimako-sends-sos-message-over-adwoa-safo/ Fri, 15 Sep 2023 16:26:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2294736 The Director of Elections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Evans Nimako, has called for calm and restraint among Dome-Kwabenya constituents following an apology by their Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo.

Though NPP supporters, especially in the constituency, are incensed at the lawmaker over her prolonged absence from parliamentary duties, he urged them to exercise restraint.

In Mr. Nimako’s view, the party must focus on the greater task ahead, which is the 2024 election, instead of issues that may derail it.

The embattled MP on Thursday rendered an unqualified apology to the NPP for her absence from parliamentary duties.

In a video posted on Facebook, she apologised to President Akufo-Addo, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, the Chief of Staff, parliamentary leadership, the party, her constituents, and sympathisers.

She explained that, these emotions were fueled by the complex personal challenges she was facing in her private life.

Reacting to Adwoa Safo’s apology, Mr Nimako on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen said it was a step in the right direction.

However, he said that the apology should restore calm in the constituency and the party at large.

“Even in marriage, not every issue between a husband and wife comes out, so we can’t talk too much about it or wash our dirty linens outside. We can’t drag this issue forever. She went and has come back, so we should accept it” he said.

Forget about Dome-Kwabenya seat – NDC tells Adwoa Safo https://www.adomonline.com/forget-about-dome-kwabenya-seat-ndc-tells-adwoa-safo/ Fri, 15 Sep 2023 13:46:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2294516 A communications team member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nana Akua Avle has urged Sarah Adwoa Safo to forget about the Dome Kwabenya parliamentary seat.

According to her, the constituents are rooting for the NDC candidate ahead of the 2024 general elections.

The Dome Kwabenya constituency has been a stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Greater Accra region for many years.

Adwoa Safo retained her seat for the third time after beating her contender Faustina Eliplim Akurugu of the NDC.

But speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Akua Avle who is also a constituent, said the NPP will lose the seat in 2024.

“All the 20,000 people who voted for her are disappointed. Ever since she won in 2020, she has not been seen in the constituency” she stated.

Akua Avle added that, though Adwoa Safo has apologised for her actions, it is not enough to retain her seat.

“Her apology is to her party, NPP but we the constituents do not accept. She should forget about the seat. Dome Kwabenya will surprise Ghana by voting for the NDC. 2024 will be a nod for the NDC parliamentary candidate, Elikplim Akrugu. NPP will get zero percent in 2024 because now voters can never be bought over. No one wants to accept some coins today and let their children suffer tomorrow,” she noted.

In a video posted on Facebook on September 14, the MP apologised to the NPP for the controversies she caused during her extended absence from parliamentary duties.

She acknowledged her actions were unjustified and expressed regret, citing personal challenges.

Meanwhile, Dome Kwabenya constituency executives say Adwoa Safo will not represent the party in the 2024 elections.

Mr Bonsu stated that, he bears no grudges against Adwoa Safo as she contacted him personally to apologise

“Per my personal assessment, her actions were unintentional or deliberate. She personally phoned me and told me about her situation, she was going through a lot. So I have forgiven her” he said.

But the Majority leader said it will be difficult to forget how Adwoa Safo’s conduct affect government business in Parliament.

“I cannot forget what she did but I hold nothing against her. The constituency executives can also do their own assessment and take the necessary steps. But I will plead with them to temper justice with mercy,” he said on Accra-based Neat FM.

According to her, Seth Osei Kissi, aide of the embattled MP is making matters worse.

Mr. Kissi has been giving clarity to the apology rendered by his boss, Adwoa Safo.

He described as unfortunate how some NPP members especially at Dome-Kwabenya are treating the issue.

But Madam Essiam said such comments will only worsen the already volatile situation.

“Her spokesperson is not helping matters. Don’t try to justify what cannot be justified. Adwoa Safo should sack her spokesperson. Serving the nation is a call, if you are faced with adversaries you have to step down,” she said on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem Friday.

Madam Essiam commended the constituency executives for their response to the apology.

“The constituency executives have spoken well, as they have accepted the apology, all party members can accept it too but cannot forgive. Adwoa Safo and I are extremely close; she has been through a lot but she handled the situation badly” she stated.

“Adwoa Safo no longer stays in the constituency. She now lives at East Legon. Her house in Dome-Kwabenya has been dark until they recently fixed bulbs to light up the place. To him, Madam Safo would not have also relocated if her apology was genuine.

Meanwhile, Dome-Kwabenya Constituency Secretary, Theophilus Larbi has said the party will not risk its chances in the 2024 elections by re-electing of Adwoa Safo as parliamentary candidate.

Speaker to deliver ruling on Adwoa Safo today https://www.adomonline.com/speaker-to-deliver-ruling-on-adwoa-safo-today/ Wed, 26 Oct 2022 10:01:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2175984 Parliament will today, October 26, 2022, determine the fate of Dome-Kwabenya legislator, Sarah Adwoa Safo.

The house was expected to take that decision Tuesday as it commenced the Third Meeting of the Second Session of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic.

Prior to the break, Speaker Alban Bagbin deferred his ruling on whether the MP’s seat should be declared vacant after she failed to honour a meeting by the Privileges Committee on her continuous absence from Parliament.

But contrary to that Ghanaians had to wait a day more to know what happens as the Speaker announced the postponement to the rest of the House.

The Member of Parliament was relieved of her ministerial position after staying outside the country for nearly a year amid calls from critics to get her axed.

The President’s decision to act on these calls on July 28, came after Parliament had postponed a decision on her status as a representative of her constituency.

President Akufo-Addo appointed Lariba Zuweira Abudu as Minister-designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection in Adwoa Safo’s stead.
