A six-year-old girl has reportedly drowned in an uncovered septic tank at Liberty Estate in Gbetsile in a tragic incident that has reignited concerns over water shortages in the community.

The incident occurred on Sunday, May 24, when the girl, identified by residents as Abi, is said to have gone to a neighbour’s home in search of water.

Accra-based Channel One TV reported that she accidentally fell into the uncovered septic tank and drowned before help could reach her.

The heartbreaking incident has thrown the community into mourning, with residents linking the tragedy to the persistent lack of access to clean and reliable water in the area.

They say repeated water shortages often force children to move from house to house in search of water, exposing them to unsafe conditions.

Some residents are now calling on authorities to urgently address the water challenges and ensure that hazardous structures, including septic tanks, are properly secured to prevent similar incidents.

“This beautiful soul was lost simply because there is no water,” one resident lamented.

The tragedy has renewed calls for swift intervention to improve water supply and safety within the community.
