Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has backed the Black Stars to defy recent struggles and make an impact at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana, four-time African champions, are intensifying preparations for the tournament to be staged across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, results in recent friendly matches have raised concerns, with the team failing to register a win in their last five outings.
Despite the dip in form, Nyantakyi insists Ghana’s football history proves the team should never be discounted on the global stage.
“As I told somebody yesterday, never write off any Ghana team,” the former CAF First Vice President told the Daily Graphic.
“The time you have little faith in them is when they spring surprises. Let us rally behind them, and I think they can do well,” Mr Nyantakyi added.
Ghana will be making their fifth World Cup appearance and have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. Their campaign begins against Panama at BMO Field on June 17, followed by a clash with England at Gillette Stadium on June 23, before concluding the group stage against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field on June 27.
The Black Stars are currently in Cardiff preparing for an international friendly against Wales on June 2.
Meanwhile, Carlos Queiroz has announced a 28-man provisional squad, with the final list expected to be confirmed on June 1.
After back-to-back group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022, Ghana will be aiming to reach the knockout rounds for the first time in more than a decade.
