Former Ghana striker Godwin Attram has expressed confidence that the Black Stars can progress beyond the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, backing newly appointed head coach Carlos Queiroz to deliver on expectations.
Ghana, four-time African champions, are set to make their fifth appearance at football’s biggest tournament, which will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
However, their build-up has been far from ideal, with the team failing to win any of their last five international friendlies.
Despite that worrying run, Attram believes the experience and pedigree of Queiroz—who has previously managed the national teams of Egypt and Colombia, as well as Real Madrid in various capacities—could prove decisive.
“The FA did well to appoint him, and we hope that whatever the country wants, he will deliver,” Attram told Graphic Sports.
When asked about Ghana’s chances in what has been described as a demanding Group L, Attram dismissed concerns over the opposition.
“Why not?” he said. “At the end of the day, it’s just football, and if we prepare ourselves very well, in tune with whatever the players must do, I’m very sure we will qualify out of the group,” he added.
The Black Stars will continue their preparations with a friendly against Wales on June 2 at the Cardiff City Stadium.
At the tournament proper, Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. They will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium. Their final group match will be against Croatia on June 27 at Lincoln Financial Field.
Ghana will be aiming to reach the knockout stage for the first time since 2010, having suffered group-stage exits in both 2014 and 2022.
Queiroz has already named a 28-man provisional squad, with the final selection expected on June 1.
