Ghana concluded the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships without a gold medal after the five-day competition ended on Sunday, May 17, in Accra.

Competing on home soil, Team Ghana finished 18th on the medals table with a total of five medals—one silver and four bronze—falling short of expectations for a stronger showing before the home crowd.

The final day featured events across more than 12 disciplines, including the high jump, javelin, and several track and field finals, bringing the championship in the Ghanaian capital to a close.

Ghana’s hopes of ending on a higher note suffered a setback after team captain Joseph Paul Amoah finished fifth in the men’s 200m final in a closely contested race.

The women’s 4x400m relay team also narrowly missed out on a podium finish after placing fourth, while the men’s 4x400m team finished last in 3:05.14.

Despite the setbacks, Ghana recorded several podium finishes during the competition. The country secured bronze medals in both the men’s and women’s 4x100m relay events. Alex Amankwah won bronze in the men’s 800m, while Florence Agyemang also added a bronze in the women’s 400m.

Ghana’s only silver medal came through high jumper Esther Obeng.

South Africa topped the medal table with 20 medals, followed by Kenya with 17 and Ethiopia with 14.
