Ghanaian entrepreneur and farmer Rev. Tweneboah Kodua has declared his intention to contest the 2028 presidential election as an independent candidate.

Speaking at a press conference in Kumasi, Rev. Kodua said his decision was driven by concerns over what he described as the country’s direction under successive governments.

According to him, the two major political parties have had enough opportunities to govern, yet many challenges facing Ghanaians remain unresolved.

“I will run as an independent candidate. The political parties have had their chance to lead this country, but Ghanaians are still struggling with issues that should have been solved long ago,” he said.

He also suggested that President John Dramani Mahama’s efforts to reform the country face internal challenges.

“President Mahama intends to develop the country and fix the system, but faces resistance from within his party,” he added.

Rev. Kodua appealed to citizens who are dissatisfied with the traditional two-party political system to support an independent alternative.

He criticised the country’s economic direction, arguing that Ghana has not achieved genuine independence because it continues to rely heavily on external support.

“Ghana has not yet achieved true independence. We cannot claim to be independent while continuing to rely on foreign nations. We should be using the resources God has blessed us with to develop our nation,” he stated.

The aspiring presidential candidate also argued that parts of the 1992 Constitution no longer serve their intended purpose and instead benefit a limited section of society.

He said constitutional reforms would form a major part of his administration if elected.

Outlining some of his policy priorities, Rev. Kodua said his campaign would focus on agricultural modernisation, youth employment and reducing Ghana’s dependence on imported goods.

As a farmer, he disclosed that he has cultivated 120 acres of maize and intends to donate the harvest to support the government’s school feeding programme.

“My background as a farmer and entrepreneur gives me practical understanding of the problems and how to solve them. That distinguishes me from other candidates who may contest the 2028 election,” he said.

He also pledged to reduce the financial burden on Ghanaians by abolishing electricity bills and establishing mining centres across the country to create jobs and ensure responsible mining practices.

“If I become President, Ghanaian households will not pay electricity bills because we have resources that can cover the costs. I will establish mining centres in all regions to employ the youth and ensure proper mining practices,” he stated.

Rev. Kodua further criticised Ghana’s education system, describing it as overly theoretical.

He proposed introducing a “Ghana School” model focused on technical and vocational education to equip students with practical skills and reduce dependence on government employment.

He said he plans to begin nationwide consultations in the coming months to build support ahead of the 2028 election campaign.
