Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has revisited one of the most painful moments of his career, revealing his disappointment at being left out of the Black Stars squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Kingston, who had already missed out on the 2006 tournament, said he was stunned to be dropped again ahead of what would become Ghana’s most historic World Cup campaign.

Speaking in an interview with 3Sports, the former winger—now head coach of Uganda’s U-17 national team—described the decision as unexpected and emotionally difficult, adding that several teammates shared his disbelief at the time.

“For me, the whole situation in 2010 came as a huge shock. It shocked not only me but most of the players as well,” Kingston said.

“Even today, some of my former teammates still tease me about it, but honestly, I have always felt it was unfair.”

Kingston recounted the night he was informed during the team’s pre-tournament camp, saying he had already gone to bed when teammate Quincy Owusu-Abeyie woke him shortly before midnight with news that he was needed by team officials.

On arriving at the meeting, he was confronted by members of the technical leadership, including then Ghana FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi and other staff.

“When I entered the conference room, I saw the entire technical team there. Nyantakyi was present, Dr Randy Abbey was there, the coach and his backroom staff were all seated. That was when they informed me about the decision. I was completely disappointed,” he added.

He also dismissed long-standing claims that he reacted violently after being dropped, insisting he remained emotional but did not become physical.

Despite the setback, Ghana went on to enjoy its most successful World Cup run in history in 2010, reaching the quarter-finals in South Africa.
