Hon. Ibrahim noted that the return of calm will create a conducive environment for business activities and enable the government to effectively implement its development agenda in the area.

He made the remarks when the Sunyani Traditional Council paid a courtesy call on the Ministry on Thursday, 5th March 2026, to acknowledge the Ministry’s role in resolving a long-standing chieftaincy dispute in the area.

The Minister explained that the conflict, involving factions aligned with the Paramount Chief and Paramount Queenmother, had persisted for years, affecting unity within the traditional area. Using Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms, the Ministry facilitated a process combining traditional and administrative approaches to bring both parties together.

Hon. Ibrahim indicated that both sides have begun implementing a mutually agreed roadmap aimed at sustaining peace, describing the development as encouraging for the traditional area’s future.

“Traditional authorities are critical partners in governance. Without their cooperation and support, it becomes difficult to achieve meaningful development at the local level,” he emphasized, adding that the renewed unity between the factions is a welcome development for government and the people of Sunyani.

He commended the traditional leadership for prioritizing peace and urged them to remain committed to the roadmap to ensure lasting harmony, while reiterating government’s continued support for development initiatives in the municipality.

Speaking on behalf of the traditional authorities, the President of the Sunyani Traditional Council and Paramount Chief of Sunyani, Odeefuor Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II, expressed profound gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama, Minister Ibrahim, and the Ministry for their intervention, noting that the successful mediation has restored hope to the people of Sunyani.

The Paramount Queenmother also conveyed her appreciation, highlighting that peace has brought relief to residents, including non-indigenes living and working in the municipality.

Both the Paramount Chief and Queenmother assured the Minister of their commitment to work together in unity to promote peace and development within the Sunyani Traditional Area.

The final funeral rites which are scheduled between 9th February and 28th February 2026, would exhibit indigenous culture and traditions related to the burial of Ewe Chiefs.

From 9 to 19 February 2029, mourning rites will be observed in the form of a dawn procession under the auspices of the Queen Mothers, with participation from Women’s Groups in the Ziavi Traditional Area. This is known in the local parlance as “Avihe dzidzi and Togbega didi”.

There would be cultural vigils, tributes, cultural performances, remembrance nights, signing of a book of condolence, and other youthful activities within the same period.

The warriors of Ziavi Traditional Area would kick-start Asafo performances on the 20th of February and lead a procession to usher in the mortal remains of the late Togbega Kwaku Ayim IV to Ziavi Dzogbe.

This signifies the start of the main funeral of the late traditional leader who reigned for 38 years.

The 21st to 27th of February 2026 would host asafo groups from Asogli-Ho, Klefe, Peki, Takla, Tsyome, and the Avazorli Union, as they pay tribute to their departed compatriot.

This practice which is called Afanyanya, is performed by playing and displaying sacred drums, war fares, and the indigenous culture of the Ewe warriors.

During this period, the mortal remains of Togbega Kwaku Ayim IV will be laid in state for family, friends, well-wishers, and sympathisers to pay their last respect to the great leader of the Ziavi area.

Saturday, 28th February, will host the grand Royal Burial Service at the Ziavi Senior High Technical School park at Ziavi Dzogbe, where a host of dignitaries, including high political and government figures, are expected to be in attendance.

Post-burial customary rites, memorial and thanksgiving service are scheduled between 1st and 8th March 2026 to mark the end of the Royal Funeral rites for the late Togbega Kwaku Ayim IV.

The late Togbega’s tenure saw a great transformation in his beloved traditional area, especially in the education sector and traditional rulership. He acquired a Traditional Council status for Ziavi, making it an autonomous Traditional Area.

His advocacy and leadership saw the establishment of the Ziavi Senior High Technical School, which has contributed to increasing educational standards and improving the human resources in the area.

Gov’t increases quarterly adjudication allowance for chiefs to GH¢50,000 https://www.adomonline.com/govt-increases-quarterly-adjudication-allowance-for-chiefs-to-gh%c2%a250000/ Sat, 24 Jan 2026 09:08:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2623169 The government has approved an increment in the quarterly adjudication allowance for traditional authorities, a move expected to speed up the settlement of chieftaincy disputes nationwide.

From April 1, 2026, the allocation will move from GH¢30,000 to GH¢50,000, marking a 66.7 per cent rise intended to strengthen the capacity of Houses of Chiefs to sit more regularly and clear long-standing cases.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, during a familiarisation visit to the Volta Regional House of Chiefs in Ho.

According to the minister, the increment forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s “Reset Agenda,” which seeks to stabilise communities by empowering traditional rulers to serve as credible mediators in local conflicts.

Speaking to the chiefs, Mr Ibrahim said the responsibility of traditional leaders has expanded beyond preserving culture to include judicial and development-related duties. He admitted that poor resourcing over the years had limited the ability of Regional Houses of Chiefs to sit frequently, creating a backlog of disputes that sometimes spill over into security threats.

“The government remains fully committed to strengthening the capacity of the Regional Houses of Chiefs,” he assured.

He added that the new adjudication package is part of a wider support programme for traditional authorities. As part of it, monthly allowances for Paramount Chiefs have been increased by 300 per cent to GH¢3,000, while Queen Mothers will now receive GH¢2,400, to help them effectively maintain peace and stability in their jurisdictions.

Beyond chieftaincy administration, the minister also briefed the House on government’s 24-Hour Model Market initiative under the NDC’s 24-hour economy policy.

The project, he explained, will establish modern commercial centres operating in three eight-hour shifts to boost local trade and expand employment opportunities, particularly for the youth.

Mr Ibrahim urged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to work closely with traditional leaders to implement the programme and appealed to chiefs to support it by releasing suitable land for the construction of the markets.

In his remarks, Togbe Agama Amata VI, Paramount Chief of the Fievie Traditional Area, welcomed the allowance increase, describing it as a timely intervention that would revive the work of judicial committees within the Houses of Chiefs.

He also praised the government for ongoing development projects in the Volta Region, citing the Eastern Corridor Road as a practical example of the administration’s infrastructure drive.

“The ongoing works along the Eastern Corridor Road are a major example of the party’s ‘Big Push’ infrastructure agenda,” Togbe Amata VI said, adding that the improved road network is already boosting economic activity in the Fievie Traditional Area and across the wider Volta Region.

Five Akuapem divisional chiefs part ways with queen mother https://www.adomonline.com/five-akuapem-divisional-chiefs-part-ways-with-queen-mother/ Thu, 15 Jan 2026 10:43:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2619551 Five divisional chiefs (Mpakanfo) of the Akuapem Traditional Area in the Eastern Region have banned the queenmother of the area, Nana Afua Obuo Nketia II, from attending traditional council meetings.

In effect, Nana Afua Obuo Nketia ceases to be recognised as the queenmother of Akuapem.

A libation was poured and a white sheep was slaughtered last December, to signify the end of her reign during a traditional council meeting of the chiefs and queenmothers of Akuapem.

Divisional chiefs

The meeting was attended by the Krontihene, Osahene Boafo Ansah II, the Adontenhene, Otoobour Djan Kwasi II, who is also the Aburihene, the Gyasehene, Oyeeman Osim Kwatia II, who is also the Amanokromhene, the Nifahene, Osuodumgya Otutu Ababio V, who is also the Adukromhene and the Benkumhene and chief of Larteh Ahenease, Osabarima Asiedu Okoo Ababio III.

All five divisional chiefs signed a resolution, with copies delivered to the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs and the Akuapem Traditional Council.

Abusive utterances

The Krontihene, Osahene Boafo Ansah, who read the resolution with the support of his colleagues, said that for close to six years, the queenmother, Nana Afia Obuo Nketia, had refused to attend meetings and, at the same time, used abusive language that had retarded the progress and development of the area.

That, he indicated, made outsiders feel unsafe in the area.

Osahene Boafo Ansah stated that the queenmother attempted to stop this year’s Odwira Festival celebrations, as well as previous ones, which, according to the Krontihene, was a taboo because in Akuapem, a queenmother had no powers over Odwira Festival celebrations.

The queenmother, he further stated, paraded herself as the omanhene of Akuapem, thus rendering Akuapem as a banana state in the eyes of all right-thinking persons.

Osahene Boafo Ansah told the gathering that, despite such absolute misconduct by Nana Afua Obuo Nketia, the Abusuapanin (Head of clan) refused to call her to order to preserve the image, credibility, and pride of the Nketia Royal Family.

He said, in view of such circumstances and considering the safety of outsiders, the chieftaincy status, educational standards, and socio-economic outlook of the Akuapem Traditional Council, they had to part ways with Nana Afua Obuo Nketia to save Akuapem from further disgrace.

The Omanhene, Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III, was present at the council meeting.

Kwahu Traditional Council petitions IGP over arrest of Paramount Chief and Queen mother https://www.adomonline.com/kwahu-traditional-council-petitions-igp-over-arrest-of-paramount-chief-and-queen-mother/ Fri, 21 Nov 2025 11:43:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2602528 The Kwahu Traditional Council has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohonu, to launch a full-scale investigation into the dawn raid on the Abene Palace and the arrest of the Kwahuhene, Daasebere Akuamoah Boateng III, and the Queenmother of Kwahu, Nana Adwoa Gyamfua III.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, November 17, and has since drawn strong condemnation from traditional authorities in the area.

Addressing a press conference, the Twafohene of the Council and Chief of Kwahu Tafo, Nana Kwasi Opoku Mintah II, described the operation as troubling and unacceptable.

He criticised the conduct of police personnel, who reportedly carried out the raid at approximately 4am. He said the council viewed the development as a breach of respect for traditional authority and an unnecessary show of force.

The Kwahu Adontenghene and Chief of Abetifi, Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, also expressed concern at the humiliation and distress caused to Daasebere Akuamoah Boateng III during the operation.

He said it would be in the best interest of the officers involved to return to Kwahu and render an unqualified traditional apology to the chiefs. He emphasised that such an apology was necessary to restore dignity and maintain the long-standing relationship between the traditional authorities and state security agencies.

Following Monday’s arrests, the IGP ordered the immediate release of the Queenmother, Nana Adwoa Gyemfua, and directed the Police Professional Standards Bureau to investigate the circumstances surrounding the operation. He also instructed that any officer found culpable be sanctioned in line with police disciplinary procedures.

Residents who witnessed the incident told local reporters that armed men dressed in police uniforms arrived at the palace claiming to be from National Security.

Gunshots were reportedly heard within the palace compound before the Queen mother was arrested. The presence of the officers and the use of force have left many residents alarmed.

The Kwahu Traditional Council insists that the matter must be investigated thoroughly to prevent a recurrence and to protect the dignity of traditional leadership.

The council reiterated that it remains committed to maintaining peace and cooperation with state institutions but expects that mutual respect must underpin all engagements.

Akyem Kotoku omanhene settles Anyinam Kotoku chieftaincy dispute https://www.adomonline.com/akyem-kotoku-omanhene-settles-anyinam-kotoku-chieftaincy-dispute/ Wed, 20 Aug 2025 14:40:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2569338 The Omanhene of Akyem Kotoku Traditional Area, Oseadeeyo Dr Frimpong Manso IV, has advised kingmakers to ensure that only qualified individuals from royal families, who enjoy support from the masses, are nominated and installed as chiefs to minimise chieftaincy disputes.

He warned them not to be swayed by financial motives to nominate non-royals or unqualified individuals as traditional rulers.

Oseadeeyo Frimpong Manso attributed most chieftaincy litigations and their socio-economic problems in some traditional areas to the selection of unqualified individuals or those with dubious characters as chiefs.

The omanhene made the call when he addressed the two factions of Anyinam Kotoku embroiled in a chieftaincy dispute at his palace at Oda.

He warned kingmakers not to take the law into their own hands, but to consult those who matter before making their decisions, to avoid contravening established rules governing chieftaincy issues.

Legitimate

Oseadeeyo Frimpong Manso urged the two factions to recognise Nana Marfo Amparbeng II and Nana Bamfoa Konadu Yiadom I of the Bretuo Anakwa royal family as the legitimate chief and queenmother of the town, respectively.

He advised the two factions not to rejoice or otherwise, as there was no victor or vanquished in the peaceful resolution of the matter.

The two factions thanked the omanhene and his wing chiefs for peacefully resolving the issue and promised to follow the directives to promote peace and stability in the community.

Other speakers at the ceremony included the Krontihene of the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Area, Obrempong Gyamfi Saforo Kyereh and the Kotoku Gyaasehene, Obrempong Kwasi Amo Kyeretwie.

Nii Adama Latse II loses case at Supreme Court https://www.adomonline.com/nii-adama-latse-ii-loses-case-at-supreme-court/ Wed, 23 Jul 2025 20:08:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2559087

The Supreme Court has quashed the order directed at the National House of Chiefs in Kumasi to restore Nii Tackie Adama Latse II onto the national register of chiefs as the Ga Mantse.

In a ruling Wednesday [July 23, 2025], a five-member panel of the apex court which had Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang as its president, was of the view that before making the order to restore Nii Latse II’s name onto the register, the Kumasi High Court judge, Justice Frederick Tetteh, did not give Nii Tackie Teiko a notice and hearing, thereby violating the rule of natural justice.

This comes after the apex court upheld a certiorari application filed by counsel for the Nii Tackie Tsuru, Professor Peter A. Atupare.

The court said that the High Court did not afford Nii Tackie Tsuru  his constitutional right to be heard in proceedings that directly affected his rights and interests as Ga Mantse.

Appeal

On June 12, 2025, the Court of Appeal ordered the National House of Chiefs to restore Nii Adama Latse onto the national register of chiefs as the Ga Mantse (the Paramount Chief of the Ga State) within 14 days.

That was after it upheld a High Court ruling, which first gave the order in November 2021.

In its unanimous decision, the three-member panel of the second-highest court of the land held that the National House of Chiefs removed Nii Adama Latse’s name from the register without any evidence that he had been validly destooled, a prerequisite for removing a chief’s name from the national register.

“The National House of Chiefs, Kumasi, removed the name of Nii Latse II from the national register without any evidence that he was dead, had been deposed or had abdicated or that an adjudicatory body had ordered the removal of his name.

“The decision of National House of Chiefs, Kumasi was ultra vires, constituted an abuse of power and amounted to a wrong exercise of discretion, thereby constituting an error of law,” the three-member panel of the court ruled when it dismissed the National House of Chiefs, Kumasi’s appeal against the November 2021 High Court decision.

Background

In April 2021, Nii Adama Latse II learnt that his name had been expunged from the National Register.

To ascertain his status, counsel for Nii Adama Latse applied for a search with the National House of Chiefs, Kumasi, which confirmed that, indeed, his name had been expunged.

He then instructed his lawyer to write a letter of objection, demanding the restoration of his name in the register by April 27, 2021, but the National House of Chiefs, Kumasi, refused.

Following this, Nii Adama Latse, whose name was originally part of the register after submitting his enstoolment form from the Ga Traditional Council, filed a motion in a form of a judicial review at the High Court in Kumasi, seeking an order directed at the National House of Chiefs, Kumasi to restore his name onto the register as the Ga Mantse.

This relief was granted by the High Court, but unsatisfied with the ruling, the National House of Chiefs, Kumasi, went to the Court of Appeal to challenge the High Court ruling, which ordered the restoration of Nii Adama Latse’s name in the register.

Their main argument was that the High Court was not the proper forum to seek a judicial review; hence, it was not clothed with the jurisdiction to hear the matter.

It is this appeal that has been dismissed by the Court of Appeal, affirming the High Court’s order for Nii Adama Latse’s name to be restored.

Statement

By a press statement issued on June 13, 2025, the Office of King Tackie Teiko Tsuru refuted claims that the ruling confers chieftaincy legitimacy on Nii Adama Latse.

It emphasised that the judiciary did not have jurisdiction to determine matters affecting chieftaincy titles, which were the exclusive purview of the Judicial Committees of the Traditional Councils and the Regional and National Houses of Chiefs.

“The Court of Appeal did not and could not declare Nii Adama Latse II as Ga Mantse,” the statement read.

“The court merely upheld an administrative order — specifically, an order of mandamus compelling the National House of Chiefs to follow due legal process in maintaining or removing names from the National Register,” it said, adding that the substantive matter regarding who rightfully occupies the Ga Mantse Stool remains unresolved and is still pending before the Judicial Committee of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs.

The statement further called on the media and the public to treat with caution the widespread interpretations of the ruling.

“We urge all well-meaning GaDangme citizens and residents of the Ga State to remain calm and not be swayed by misinformation,” the statement said.

Sunyani Traditional Council suspends Queenmother over disputed enstoolment https://www.adomonline.com/sunyani-traditional-council-suspends-queenmother-over-disputed-enstoolment/ Fri, 20 Jun 2025 09:21:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546583 The succession dispute in the Sunyani Traditional Area has taken a dramatic turn with the indefinite suspension of the Paramount Queenmother, Nana Akosua Duaa Asor Sika Brayie II.

The Sunyani Traditional Council, which announced the suspension with immediate effect, has also barred the Queenmother from performing any public duties on behalf of the Council.

Her suspension follows her alleged involvement in the enstoolment of Dr. Osei Tutu as Omanhene of the Sunyani Traditional Area, to succeed the late Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri II, who passed away in July 2022 and was buried in April 2024.

Caution to the Public

At a press conference, the Acting President of the Sunyani Traditional Council, Nana Kwaku Sarbeng Ababio II, cautioned the public and all institutions—especially the media—against engaging the Queenmother in any official capacity.

“The Nananom of the Sunyani Traditional Area/Council hereby inform all state institutions, the media, and the general public that Nana Akosua Duaa Asor Sika Brayie II has been suspended indefinitely from her position as the Paramount Queenmother of Sunyani,” he stated.

Nana Ababio, who also serves as Akwamuhene, urged stakeholders to treat the communiqué with urgency and seriousness, emphasising the Council’s commitment to preserving the integrity of traditional leadership.

Monday Incident

It was alleged that in the early hours of Monday, the suspended Queenmother employed the services of some “mecho men” in an attempt to overpower private security personnel at the Sunyani Old Palace in a bid to install her preferred candidate—despite the Traditional Council having already enstooled Odeefuo Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II as the legitimate successor.

However, private security reportedly thwarted the attempted takeover after an exchange of gunfire. When the plan to seize the palace failed, the Queenmother allegedly conducted a separate installation ceremony at her private residence in Baakoniaba.

Dr. Osei Tutu, a 63-year-old US-based Doctor of Physical Therapy, was reportedly given the stool name Ofentemfrem Omenasono Dr. Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri III.

Council’s Position

Nana Ababio described the Queenmother’s actions as an affront to the customs and traditions of the Traditional Council.

“What transpired is a clear affront to our customs and traditions, bringing public ridicule upon the Boahen Korkor Stool,” he said.

He added that her conduct was not only disrespectful but also a threat to the dignity of traditional leadership.

“This behaviour undermines the integrity of our leadership and affects the very fabric of our community,” he noted.

Only One Recognised Chief

Nana Ababio emphasised that Odeefuo Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II remains the only legitimate chief of the Sunyani Traditional Area.

“There is no other chief in the Sunyani Traditional Area other than Odeefuo Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II,” he said.

“This has been affirmed by the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, which dismissed the interlocutory injunction filed by the Queenmother on April 8, 2025.”

He described the enstooled chief as a unifier and a peacemaker who has made efforts to reconcile all factions, including those who initially opposed his installation.

Installation ‘Illegal’

Commenting on the purported installation of Dr. Tutu, Nana Ababio described it as illegal and baseless.

He revealed that Dr. Tutu had been one of seven aspirants for the stool but was rejected by the Kingmakers for failing to prove his lineage.

“The Queenmother has no authority to appoint anyone as chief,” Nana Ababio stressed.

“Recent events at Baakoniaba claiming to install an imposter are not recognised by us. This act is not only illegal but deeply disrespectful.”

He said the Queenmother’s actions represented a gross disregard for the authority of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs and the Traditional Court.

“Such indiscipline will not be tolerated by the Chiefs of the Traditional Council. Nananom have made a firm decision in response to these events. We will not allow the integrity of our chieftaincy to be undermined,” he warned.

He urged the public to treat any claim to the contrary with “utmost contempt.”

Palanquins and Pageantry: A glimpse into Ghana’s rich chieftaincy traditions https://www.adomonline.com/palanquins-and-pageantry-a-glimpse-into-ghanas-rich-chieftaincy-traditions/ Tue, 10 Jun 2025 16:40:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2543282 The recent appearance of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Wenchimanhene, Osagyefo Amoapong Ampem Anye Tabarako III, in palanquins at the funeral of the late Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, has sparked widespread curiosity.

However, the significance of this grand display of royal tradition is deeply rooted in the lineage and heritage of the Wenchimanhene.

At the center of this story is Victoria Osei Bonsu, mother of the current Wenchimanhene and daughter of the late Asante Mampong Akwamuhene, Oheneba Owusu Afriyie.

Oheneba Owusu Afriyie was himself the son of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, who ruled as occupant of the Amaniampong Silver Stool from 1916 to 1930.

Crucially, the late Akwamuhene, Oheneba Owusu Afriyie, played a pivotal role in the selection of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II to the Silver Stool—further strengthening the familial and traditional ties.

This direct descent makes the Wenchimanhene a grandson of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, and his appearance in a palanquin during the funeral rites is a powerful symbol of that connection.

It reflects royal respect, heritage, and the continuity of lineage.

The Asantehene’s presence in a palanquin also underscores the cultural and historical importance of the occasion.

It affirms the enduring legacy of the Asante royal family and their unwavering commitment to upholding tradition and honoring their ancestors.

By participating in the royal procession in such a traditional and symbolic manner, both the Asantehene and Wenchimanhene demonstrated the strength of the bonds that unite the various royal houses—and the timeless customs that continue to define them.

Bunkprugu Paramount chief officially gazetted after 18-year legal battle https://www.adomonline.com/bunkprugu-paramount-chief-officially-gazetted-after-18-year-legal-battle/ Wed, 04 Jun 2025 07:07:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2541511 After nearly two decades of intense legal disputes and traditional contestation, the Paramount Chief of Bunkprugu, Naba Alhaji Abuba Nasinmong, has finally been officially gazetted by the National House of Chiefs.

The formal recognition, issued by the House of Chiefs on Wednesday, May 7, marks the end of an 18-year chieftaincy battle that has divided communities in the North East regional border district.

The gazette publication, which officially confirms his status as the legitimate traditional ruler of the Bunkprugu Traditional Area, was met with celebrations across the township, with traditional rituals held in his honour.

Naba Nasinmong ascended to the throne in May 2007 following the death of his predecessor, but his legitimacy was immediately challenged by rival factions, leading to protracted legal cases, occasional outbreaks of skirmishes, and stalled regional socioeconomic progress.

“Although I was traditionally recognised throughout this challenging period, this gazetting strengthens the foundation of my legitimacy as the Chief of Bunkprugu,” the newly gazetted chief said in an exclusive interview with JoyNews.

The chief believes he now wields greater authority to pursue development projects that benefit his traditional area.

“The Jafouk family owns 99.9% of Bunkprugu land, and this gazetting means I can come out and move from place to place, region to region, or country to country and request something good for my people,” Naba Nasinmong added. “So due to that, I’m happy to have it, and it will help build the peace.”

The chief also took the opportunity to reemphasise his legitimacy as the rightful occupant of the skin, while thanking the Mamprugu overlord and proclaiming his allegiance to Naa Buhaga Abdulai Mahami Sheriga II.

“My father, Nasinmong, gave birth to me, Alhaji Abuba,” the Bunkprugu Naba narrated. “And it is Lemma who gave birth to Nasinmong, and Gong who gave birth to Lemma, and Langbun who gave birth to Gong, and Sianon who gave birth to Langbun. Sianon was born by Jafouk, and Jafouk by Nyaam, Nyaam by Waar, Waar by Nabenkwan, Nabenkwan by Nyamdouk, and he was born by Tuok, Tuok by Kpanbeke, and he was born by our great-grandfather called Funfuna. Funfuna was born by the King of Nungu in Fada NGrouma called Yandabre, who was the 14th chief of Nungu,” the chief said. “That’s my lineage and this is why I’m the chief of Bunkprugu.”

The Bunkprugu Naba also appealed to President John Dramani Mahama for special attention to the Bunkprugu–Nakpanduri district, to ensure that his people begin to reap the benefits of stability, security, and harmony.

“Your Excellency, we are in your hands,” he pleaded. “We, the Bi-Moba land, are begging you—don’t leave us behind. We don’t have hospitals, we don’t have roads, we don’t have schools, and we have limited livelihood opportunities.”

The chief further admonished the President to ensure the resumption and completion of the district hospital project under the Agenda 111 initiative of the last NPP government.

Regarding his gazettement, residents expressed a mix of relief and hope, while traditional leaders across the North East Region have begun sending delegations to Bunkprugu to congratulate the chief and pledge their support.

Development partners and local NGOs have also expressed optimism that the resolution will clear the way for increased investment and stability in the area.

Schools to close down over late Goasomanhene’s 40th-day observance https://www.adomonline.com/schools-to-close-down-over-late-goasomanhenes-40th-day-observance/ Tue, 25 Feb 2025 09:58:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2508264 Basic schools in Goaso of the Ahafo region will be closed down on Thursday, February 27, 2025, for the 40th-day observation of the late Paramount Chief, Nana Kwasi Bosomprah.

The Nkabomhene, Nana Kwabena Frimpong announced the directive in an interview with Adom News.

Nana Frimpong noted that the traditional council has engaged the Education Directorate to ensure adherence.

He explained that the directive is to ensure their children are safe as many people and some evil minds may capitalise on that to commit crimes such as kidnapping.

According to him, the traditional council doesn’t want any bad incident to be linked to the observation, hence parents must ensure that their children are home.

Additionally, shops and other businesses with the exception of pharmacies and few restaurants will also be closed down.

He noted, any person who fails to comply with the directives will be death with.

Nana Kwasi Bosomprah passed away after a prolonged illness.

His death was officially announced on December 16, 2024, by Otumfuo’s linguist, Kyeame Antwi Boasiako, during an Asanteman Council meeting.

Nana Bosomprah, who ascended the Goasomanhene stool in 2008, was a prominent traditional leader known for his vocal advocacy for development and his critiques of government policies that he believed hindered progress in the Goaso area.

Osu Kinkawe Dzaase disowns Bernard Botchway https://www.adomonline.com/osu-kinkawe-dzaase-disowns-bernard-botchway/ Mon, 17 Feb 2025 10:36:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2505225 Osu Kinkawe Dzaase, the traditional authority responsible for the selection and installation of chiefs in Osu, has distanced itself from Bernard Botchway, also known as Nortse Nii Nortey Owuo IV.

The traditional authority has stated that Mr. Botchway is not the Osu Mantse as claimed and should not be recognized as such.

In a statement, the Dzaasetse, Nii Saban Atsen VII, urged the media, government officials, public officers, diplomats, and the general public to disregard all claims made by Mr. Botchway in relation to the Osu Stool.

“We wish to advise all relevant stakeholders not to associate or deal with this gentleman in any capacity as Osu Mantse, as he has not been installed by the Osu Kinkawe Dzaase—the only authorized body mandated to install the Osu Mantse,” the statement read in part.

Nii Saban Atsen VII emphasized that the self-styled chief is the subject of a suit at the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs. The Judicial Committee of the Regional House of Chiefs has, therefore, placed a restraining order against all claimants to the stool, including Bernard Botchway.

While Teteete Nii Nortey Owuo IV, known in private life as Nicholas Nii Nortey Owuo—a Civil Engineer with the Ghana Highway Authority—has restrained himself in accordance with the court order, Bernard Botchway continues to defy legal mandates.

His persistent disregard for the restraining order has led to contempt proceedings at the High Court in Accra, further deepening concerns about his intentions.

The statement also accused Bernard Botchway of leveraging connections with influential figures from the previous NPP government to bolster his public image. Nii Atsen VII indicated that Botchway’s actions, such as seeking photo opportunities with top politicians, diplomats, and other public figures, appear designed to cultivate political support and mask his lack of legitimate authority.

Moreover, he is said to have been aided by Ishmael Nortey Adumuah, who has been suspended as Oshiahene of Osu by the Osu Kinkawe Dzaase, further undermining his credibility.

The traditional authority has urged all concerned parties to adhere to the decisions of the judicial authorities. The statement stressed that all matters pertaining to the Osu Traditional Area and the Osu Stool are, for the interim, under the exclusive authority of the Osu Kinkawe Dzaase.

“We implore the presidency, political appointees, diplomats, and business organizations to exercise caution in their dealings with Ishmael Nortey Adumuah and Bernard Botchway,” it stated, warning that any association with these individuals would be a violation of the established legal framework.

The position of the Osu Kinkawe Dzaase, according to the statement, underscores the importance of preserving the integrity of traditional institutions in Ghana. It serves as a reminder that legitimate authority and installation procedures must be respected to ensure continuity, stability, and trust in cultural leadership.

He urged the community to continue praying for the new chief’s success in his leadership. Unity and togetherness were also emphasized as essential for fostering development in the area.

Mahama holds meeting with leadership of National House of Chiefs https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-holds-meeting-with-leadership-of-national-house-of-chiefs/ Tue, 14 Jan 2025 06:04:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2492538 President John Mahama on Monday held a meeting with the Members of the Steering Committee of the National House of Chiefs to enable him to update them on several developments in the country.

The meeting, which was at the instant of the President would also allow him to tap into the wisdom of the Members of the National House of Chiefs.

President Mahama said it was important for him to invite the Members of the Steering Committee of the House because he had received a lot of requests from various traditional areas and houses of chiefs, to pay courtesy and congratulatory visits to him.

He said he deemed it appropriate for the National House of Chiefs itself to be the first to call on the President before they received the requests from the regions and other traditional areas for their courtesy visits.

He explained that the meeting was taking place at the Accra International Conference Centre because the office of the President was currently undergoing renovation.

The President expressed his gratitude to the chiefs for their warm welcome into their palaces during the Election 2024 campaign.

He further acknowledged their respective roles in welcoming his team and giving them good counsel on how to conduct their campaigns and ensure that the election was held in a peaceful atmosphere.

“I think all that contributed to the successful election we had. We must thank all of you and the Almighty God for once again seeing Ghana through a successful election and I think that the way the whole world celebrated Ghana for the peaceful transition, has added one more accolade in our caps as the beacon of democracy in Africa and it is something that we must all take a pride in,” he said.

President Mahama said it was his intention to hold regular dialogues on many issues of importance, not only to the Chieftaincy Institution but also on the progress of the nation.

Some of the key issues discussed at the meeting included chieftaincy disputes, which had become one of the major issues on the agenda of national security.

President Mahama noted that anytime a chief passed away and a new chief had to be selected invariably two rival chiefs, or three rival chiefs would suddenly appear, and this was becoming a worrying issue affecting national development.

In the 1992 constitution it was decided from the unpleasant experiences of the past where government used to interfere in Chieftaincy matters, to leave such issues completely to the chiefs themselves that is the National House of Chiefs and the Regional Houses of Chiefs, the President said.

Notwithstanding, there was the need for these traditional authorities to work with the government to ensure law, order and peace during such occasions as enstoolments or enskinments of new chiefs, he said.

He referred to a previous state decision for a codification of the lines of succession; saying “I don’t know how far that project has gone but it looks like the issue of disputes is becoming even worse by the day and urged the Committee to critically look at that.

He said the Government intended to hold a Constitutional Review Validation conference where the intention would be to look at the works done by the Fiadjoe Constitutional Review Committee’s report, which was the initial work commissioned by President John Evans Atta Mills and that of the Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s Committee under the commission of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He said they would put all the reports on the table, to see what was still relevant in terms of amending the Constitution.

Nana Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the Mamponghene, on behalf of the National House of Chiefs, congratulated President Mahama on his ascension to the Presidency.

He expressed the National House of Chiefs’ concern about the Government’s decision to realign the Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Ministry with the Local Government Ministry and said that he only heard of it through the media.

Sunyani Queenmother seeks court intervention to restrain factions from enstooling new chief https://www.adomonline.com/sunyani-queenmother-seeks-court-intervention-to-restrain-factions-from-enstooling-new-chief/ Mon, 13 Jan 2025 12:30:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2492298

The Queenmother of the Sunyani Traditional Area, Nana Akosua Dua Asor Sika Brayie II, has filed an interlocutory injunction to restrain Yaw Agyare from carrying, styling, and conducting himself as Sunyanimanhene in any manner.

The injunction application is also seeking to restrain the Akwamuhene, Nana Kwaku Sarbeng Ababio II, from introducing or parading Yaw Agyare as Paramount Chief of Sunyani Traditional Area in any manner whatsoever.

The application was filed by her lawyer, Kwame Twumasi-Awuah on Friday, January 10, 2025.

Reason

The injunction application said the Akwamuhene, Nana Sarbeng Ababio II, by custom lacks the capacity to nominate a candidate to occupy the vacant paramount stool of the Sunyani Traditional Area.

It said the purported nomination and installation of Yaw Agyare, a corrections officer, who works in Maryland in the United States of America (USA) under a tree in front of the old palace was contrary to custom and law, and same must be set aside.

It said Yaw Agyare was not validly nominated by the Queenmother of the Sunyani Paramount Stool, therefore, he has not acquired or attained chiefly status and could not style himself as Omanhene of Sunyani Traditional Area.

The injunction application said the successor of the late Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri II had to be chosen in accordance with custom to be installed as paramount chief.

“By custom I have the customary discretion and privilege to select a candidate from the male members of the royal family to be installed as Omanhene of Sunyani Traditional Area,” it said.

It said all seven male royal members of the Boahen Korkor family had applied to be considered for the vacant stool and had presented their customary drinks.

“After receiving the customary drinks I tasked 2nd Respondent (Nana Sarbeng, the Akwamuhene) and others to conduct a background check on the candidates to find out whether they have had an infraction with the law to enable me to make a selection.

“Without my consent and authority, 2nd Respondent on 6th January, 2025 installed 1st Respondent (Yaw Agyare) as Omanhene of Sunyani Traditional Council in front of the old palace under a tree with the stool name Odeefuor Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II,” it said.

Contrary

The application said the purported nomination and installation of Yaw Agyare as Omanhene by Nana Sarbeng was contrary to the honorary custom of Sunyani Traditional Area.

It said the installation process of Sunyani Traditional Area had been published in the Government bulletin as LI.1972 (2010), adding that the nomination and installation of a candidate as paramount chief of Sunyani must be done in accordance with the procedure spelt out in the Legislative Instrument.

It said the purported installation of Yaw Agyare by the Akwamuhene under a big tree in front of the palace was not done in conformity with the L.I., and therefore, the purported nomination and installation was void ab initio (invalid from the beginning).

“As queenmother, I have the customary privilege and honor to nominate a candidate from the royal family to be installed as paramount chief. Therefore the conduct of 1st Respondent is a complete usurpation of my customary function and role to nominate a candidate from the royal family for the vacant stool,” it said.

“The conduct of 2nd Respondent by nominating and installing 1st Respondent as Omanhene of Sunyani under a tree has affected the dignity, aura, and sanctity of the stool.

Furthermore, 2nd Respondent lacked capacity to nominate and install 1st Respondent as paramount chief of Sunyani; therefore, the purported nomination and installation is not valid and same must be set aside,” it said.

It said Yaw Agyare had not been validly nominated and installed as paramount chief of Sunyani; therefore, he could not conduct and style himself as paramount chief of Sunyani Traditional Area.

Advice

“I am advised that a great harm and irreparable damage will be caused to the stool if 1st Respondent, who has not been validly nominated and installed as paramount chief in accordance with custom, is allowed to style and conduct himself as paramount chief of Sunyani Traditional Area.

Therefore, 1st Respondent must be restrained on the orders of this committee from conducting and styling himself as paramount chief.

“I am further advised that 2nd Respondent lacked capacity to nominate a candidate to be installed as paramount chief; therefore, the purported installation of 1st Respondent is contrary to custom; therefore, he must be restrained from styling and conducting himself as paramount chief,” it said.

It said their conduct was against LI 1972 (2010) and prayed that the Committee grant the application for injunction to restrain them.

What Happened to Deepen the Sunyani Stool Dispute?

The various gates vying for the vacant Sunyani paramount stool are embroiled in a fierce succession dispute. On Monday, January 6, 2025, two factions enstooled two persons to succeed the late Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri II.

The gates, which have been disputing over who becomes the next Sunyanimanhene, demonstrated their intentions in the open on Monday, January 6, 2025, following the installation of two chiefs.

On the same day, the two factions performed the necessary customary rites and enstooled their preferred successors to the late Sunyanimanhene.

While one faction installed Yaw Agyare on Monday morning, another also installed one Adom Manu in the evening.

Graphic Online reported that from the Sunyani Traditional Council, another gate was set to install its claimant to bring the number to three.

Customary Rites

Yaw Agyare is a 46-year-old Correctional Officer (prison officer) in the Maryland Community in the USA, with the stool name Odeefuor Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II.

On the other hand, Adom Manu, who is based in Sunyani, has the stool name Nana Yaw Twene Amanfo II.

Emergency Meeting

Both factions were set to hold their respective press conferences last Thursday and make their cases to the public. However, the proposed press conferences were suspended at the eleventh hour when the Bono Regional Security Council (REGSEC) stepped in to resolve the issue.

Tension

The development has brought tension to Sunyani and its surrounding communities.

Residents, including businessmen and women, told the Daily Graphic that they were living in fear over the development.

They explained that the situation could lead to mayhem, mar the otherwise peaceful atmosphere, and further affect their businesses.

They, therefore, appealed to stakeholders to swiftly intervene to avert any possible disturbances.

Kingmakers

The two installed chiefs were among the seven contestants presented to kingmakers, led by Nana Sarbeng, for vetting and selection.

The rest were Kofi Owusu, Frank Hall Baidoo, Richard Mensah, and Opoku Achamfuor.

However, a press release signed by Nana Sarbeng endorsed Yaw Agyare as the successor to the late Nana Asor Nkrawiri, explaining that all the kingmakers unanimously selected Yaw Agyare after vetting the seven candidates.

It said customary rites were performed on Monday, January 6, 2025, at the old Sunyani palace to enstool him.

Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri, who died in July 2022, was buried in April 2024.

Sunyani Queenmother debunks nominating late Omanhene’s successor https://www.adomonline.com/sunyani-queenmother-debunks-nominating-late-omanhenes-successor/ Fri, 10 Jan 2025 18:45:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491749 Two different factions claiming to fill the vacant Sunyani paramount stool have been embroiled in a succession dispute that has led to the enstoolment of two people to succeed the late Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri II.

The factions, which have for some time now been divided over who becomes the next Sunyani Omanhene finally exhibited their disagreement publicly on Monday, January 6, 2025, with the installation of the two chiefs.

While one faction on Monday morning installed Yaw Agyare, another faction also installed Adom Manu late in the evening.

Graphic Online gathers that a third faction is also planning to install another person, to bring the total to three.

The two factions performed customary rites and enstooled their preferred successors to the late Sunyani Omanhene on the same day.

Yaw Agyare is a 46-year-old police officer at Maryland Community in the USA.

Adom Manu, for his part, is based in Sunyani.

While Agyare has been given the stool name Odeefuor Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II, Manu has been given the name Nana Yaw Twene Amanfo II.

Both factions were set to hold press conferences on Thursday, January 9, 2025 to make their case and inform the public about their stand on the issue.

But the proposed press conferences were suspended because the Bono Regional Security Council (REGSEC) intervened and invited the parties to help resolve the dispute.

This development has brought tension in Sunyani, the Bono Regional capital.

What happened?

The two, who were installed on Monday, were reportedly among seven candidates who were under consideration and appeared before a search party reportedly constituted by the kingmakers led by the Akwamuhene, Nana Sarbeng, to vet and look for a successor.

Nana Sarbeng in a press statement has explained that his team endorsed Agyare as the successor after vetting all the seven candidates.

He said all the customary rites were therefore performed on Monday, January 6, 2025 at the old Sunyani Palace to enstool him.

He insists that the Sunyani Traditional Council followed all the legally laid down procedures for the enstoolment of Agyare as enshrined in the Declaration of Customary law (Sunyani) Traditional Council instrument, (Establishment) instrument, 2010 (L.1. 1972).

The relevant provision of L.I. 1972 states that when the Omanhene’s stool becomes vacant, the Queenmother shall in consultation with the Abakomahene, Abakomahemaa and the elders of the royal family, will nominate a candidate and present him to the Kingmakers for consideration.

It said pursuant to the nomination, the Kingmakers had the prerogative to vet or consider the candidate and after the vetting or consideration, elect/select or reject the said candidate.

Sunyani Queenmother denies nominating anyone

Meanwhile, the Sunyani Queenmother, Nana Akosua Dua Asor Sika Brayie II, has said nobody has been nominated by her to be installed as Omanhene of Sunyani.

“There is a misinterpretation of the word nomination by Akwamuhene, Nana Sarbeng in the statement he caused to be issued, which is not on the official letterhead of the council,” it said.

She stated in a press release that the nomination of a candidate to be installed as Sunyanimanhene by custom had to be done by the Paramount Queenmother.

“As queenmother, I have not nominated a candidate to be installed as Omanhene of Sunyani.”

“Akwamuhene is not a member of the Royal family; therefore, by custom, he cannot nominate a candidate for the vacant stool,” it said.

She indicated what the Akwamuhene and others did by installing someone as Omanhene under a tree was a usurpation of the customary and traditional function of the Paramount Queenmother.

She said the installation was therefore against the custom of the Boahen Korkor Royal Family and the good people of Sunyani.

“It is a notorious fact that the installation of Omanhene of the Sunyani Traditional Area cannot take place under a tree in front of the palace.”

“Therefore, the purported installation that took place on Monday, January 6, under a tree is not dignified and has affected the aura and sanctity of the stool,” she added.

The release said the uncustomary conduct must be condemned.

“I assure you that I will take steps to set aside the purported installation in my capacity as the Paramount Queenmother,” it said.

The release said Nana Sika Brayie would perform the customary function and rites by nominating a candidate to be installed as Omanhene of Sunyani in due course.

It also announced the suspension of the Akwamuhene as the acting President of the Sunyani Traditional Council.

It said all state institutions would be notified not to deal with him as such.

Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri who died in July 2022 was buried in April 2024.

Various gates vying for the vacant Sunyani paramount stool have been embroiled in a succession dispute that has led to the enstoolment of two people to succeed the late Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri.

Volta Regional House of Chiefs demand removal of Asikuma, Sogakope immigration posts https://www.adomonline.com/volta-regional-house-of-chiefs-demand-removal-of-asikuma-sogakope-immigration-posts/ Mon, 16 Dec 2024 14:42:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2484342 The Volta Region House of Chiefs (VRHC) has called for the immediate removal of the inland posts of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) at Asikuma, along the Ho-Accra road; and the other at Sogakope, saying they serve no good to the travelling public.

The house also called for the immediate removal of the police barrier at Juapong on the same stretch.

The President of VRHC, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, said at the last meeting of the house last Thursday that immigration posts were important at the country’s entry and exit points, and not at inland locations.

No secessionist

“Besides, there are no more secessionist activities in the region, as was the case a few years ago,” he maintained.

Togbe Tepre Hodo said some of the immigration officers only harassed and humiliated travellers, including chiefs, at those posts without any justification.

For instance, Togbe Tepre Hodo sought to know what the point was in asking travellers to go off their buses and walk for several metres to a point beyond the posts before waiting for their buses to come and pick them up to continue their journey.

The President of VRHC said there were no such awkward road barriers in other parts of the country, and so it was unfair to subject travellers from the Volta Region to such demeaning ordeals.

He said what was even more annoying was how some of the unruly immigration officers sometimes held travellers hostage, insisting they spoke Twi to prove they were Ghanaians, adding that was an unacceptable way to profile a traveller.

“We are not living in a police state, and so let us travel in peace,” Togbe Tepre Hodo insisted.

Earlier this year, three members of VRHC complained bitterly about how they were humiliated by immigration officers at the two posts while travelling from the Volta Region to Accra.

Paramount chiefs

They are the Paramount Chief of Amugo-Vego, Togbi Tenge Dzokoto Gligui; Paramount Chief of Tefle, Togbe Nakakpo Dugbaza VII, who said they were harassed at the Sogakope post, and Paramount Chief of Akoefe, Togbe Drake Tsigbe IV, who narrated the repeated ordeal he suffered at the hands of immigration officers at the Asikuma inland post.

The chiefs said they found it demeaning how they were ordered by the immigration officers at the Sogakope and Asikuma posts to come out of their vehicles to open the boots of their cars although they were in the royal regalia, and had family members on board who could open the boots for them.

They made the complaint to the Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, when he visited the VRHC in April, this year.

We’ve currently lost 15 lives – Bawku Naaba’s Lawyer on conflict https://www.adomonline.com/weve-currently-lost-15-lives-bawku-naabas-lawyer-on-conflict/ Mon, 28 Oct 2024 12:23:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2465146 Agbambilla Ziyerley Maxwell, lawyer of the Bawku Naaba says 15 people have lost their lives recently in the conflict.

On Sunday, October 27, 2024, a fresh attack happened when some assailants set up roadblocks in both Gbimsi and Walewale Town, stopping vehicles to identify potential targets.

At least, 8 persons died in the gruesome incident.

Speaking with Benjamin Akakpo on Joy News’ AM Show on Monday, October 28, 2024, Agbambilla said “For my information, we have currently lost a minimum of 15 people in Bawku and some are being slaughtered in Walewale”.

He added that, the Attorney-General should have swiftly issued another arrest warrant for Alhaji Seidu Abagre, who had been in exile since his installation as a rival chief in February 2023, but has returned to Bawku after a Kumasi High Court quashed his arrest warrant on October 17, 2024.

“We were told that the Attorney-General didn’t even put in a response so the Court had no choice but to revoke his (Alhaji Seidu Abagre’s) arrest warrant.”

He added that “The Attorney-General simply could have issued another arrest warrant but they didn’t do that,” he stressed, and blamed the Attorney-General for not doing the right thing hence the return of Alhaji Seidu.

Agbambilla said that the Bawku Naaba is not happy about the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre.

NPP’s John Krugu halts campaign over Attorney General’s withdrawal of Bawku Naaba arrest https://www.adomonline.com/s-john-krugu-halts-campaign-over-attorney-generals-withdrawal-of-bawku-naaba-arrest/ Sun, 27 Oct 2024 11:59:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2464930 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Zebilla, John Krugu, has expressed serious concerns regarding the Attorney General’s decision to withdraw an appeal intended to reinstate an arrest warrant for an individual claiming to be the Bawku Naaba.

Mr. Krugu highlighted that the Kusaug traditional area has experienced a year of relative peace, primarily due to the government’s firm stance in recognizing Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the legitimate Bawku Naaba and opposing any attempts to claim the title illegitimately.

The Attorney General’s withdrawal follows a Court of Appeal decision that nullified the initial arrest warrant, a ruling that has reportedly intensified tensions in Bawku.

In an interview with Citi News, Mr. Krugu warned that the decision to forgo further legal action could jeopardize the stability in the region.

“This is a government that previously went to court to secure an arrest warrant for the individual claiming the title, and I accepted this move when it was announced. However, the warrant was later quashed, leading the NPP to appeal that decision to reinstate the warrant,” he explained.

“The appeal clearly outlined errors made by the judge, and yet, the error seemed to be corrected overnight. This is why I have paused my campaign to seek answers. Discussions are ongoing, and I strongly believe a resolution will be reached soon.”

Mr. Krugu also clarified that he has temporarily suspended his campaign in Zebilla, awaiting a government explanation for this decision.

“I’ve heard some NDC members suggesting that I’ve withdrawn from the race. That’s not true. If they think they can gain politically from this, they should wait and see what unfolds,” he added.

Nungua Mantse elected new President of Greater Accra House of Chiefs https://www.adomonline.com/nungua-mantse-elected-new-president-of-greater-accra-house-of-chiefs/ Fri, 25 Oct 2024 07:33:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2464255 The Nungua Mantse, Oboade Notse King Professor Odaifio Welentsi III has been elected the President of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs (GARHC).

Until his election, Professor Welentsi III was the Vice President and acting President of the House.

Professor Welentsi III became the acting President following the demise of the Paramount Chief of Shai Osudoku Traditional Area, who was the President of the House.

The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, had initially filed to contest the position but he withdrew in a letter addressed to the Greater Accra Regional Director of Electoral Commission, Mrs Gladys Pinkrah.

That paved the way for Professor Welentsi III to go unopposed.

He will now serve as the President of GARHC for four years, before another election would be conducted pursuant to Act 759 of 2008, which provides that election for the position of President be held every four years.

Also elected into the office of Vice President, GARHC, is Nene Tetteh Wakah III, the Paramount Chief of Prampram Traditional Area.

Professor Welentsi III and his vice took both the oath of office and oath of secrecy administered by Ms Bacilia Adjei-Tawiah, a circuit court judge.

After administering the oaths, the judge advised the chiefs to use the office to foster peace and development.

Ms Adjei-Tawiah urged them to disassociate chieftaincy matters from litigation.

In his remarks, Professor Welentsi III expressed his profound gratitude to the chiefs for electing him as the President.

He described his election as a “victory for all” and a call to serve for the benefit of the people.

“I consider this not just my personal victory, but a victory for all of us. While I will be assuming the role of President for the next term, I see it as a responsibility to be shared with all of you,” Professor Welentsi III said.

He said that despite his extensive experience and familiarity with ethics, codes, and ways of operating, he would  need “the counsel and assistance of fellow comrades to fulfil my duties to the best of my ability. I will actively seek input from our former President’s and other members of the House on matters of mutual interest.”

“I hope and trust that you will make yourselves available to me when I reach out to you, particularly during urgent and critical moments.”

The President of GARHC apologized to those he may have offended and said he would improve on the contribution of his predecessor.”

“As human beings, we are fallible and can make mistakes, whether by omission or commission. I would like to take this opportunity to apologize if I have intentionally or unintentionally caused any offense or inconvenience to any member in the past or present. I sincerely ask for your forgiveness.”

“As your President, I have my own distinct vision and may have different approaches to certain subject matters and activities compared to my predecessor. However, I assure you that I will honour and expand upon his contribution – while I introduce new ideas for the benefit of all.”

‘Babies with sharp teeth’ destroying NDC in Nkoranza – Angry chief [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/babies-with-sharp-teeth-destroying-ndc-in-nkoranza-angry-chief-audio/ Thu, 05 Sep 2024 11:21:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2444557 The Benkumhene of Doromakese in Nkoranza North of the Bono East region has accused the youth of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of destroying the party in the area.

According to Nana Kwame Gyan, late former President Rawlings was right when he described the crop as ‘babies with sharp teeth.”

He said this on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Thursday, stating they have no regard for traditional authorities and keep disrespecting them.

“These babies with sharp teeth have no regard for anyone and because of them, prominent people who I know were in NDC have all left because the babies with sharp teeth are in control,” he lamented.

The chief cited the Assemblyman for instance, whom he claims has no regard for traditional authorities and cautioned that the NDC must immediately call such persons to order.

The chief’s comment comes on the back of curses invoked by traditional authorities after NDC flagbearer, John Mahama and the Parliamentary candidate who doubles as MP, Joseph Mensah failed to honour a pledge to visit the palace.

They waited without meeting Mr Mahama until around 7: pm when they heard he had left the town.

Banning any NDC campaign activities at Doromakese, the angry chief invoked that the gods should deal with anyone who will vote for Mr. Mahama and Joseph Mensah on their land.

They called on a deity in the town, ‘Tom Kramo’ and other powerful gods to deal anyone who defies the ban.

They have however revoked the curse following an apology on Mr Mahama’s behalf by a delegation led by Mr Mensah.

Mahama apologises to Doromakese chiefs; curses revoked  https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-apologises-to-doromakese-chiefs-curses-revoked/ Thu, 05 Sep 2024 10:06:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2444548 Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Mahama has rendered an apology to the Doromakese chief and elders following an incident they termed as disrespectful.

The Benkumhene, Nana Kwame Gyan disclosed this on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Thursday.

The traditional authorities were up in alms with the NDC and invoked curses after Mr Mahama reportedly snubbed them during a campaign tour in the Bono East region.

Obrempong Danso Abeam and his elders were made to sit and wait for 7 hours following a promise by the former President to pay a courtesy call on Monday.

Unfortunately, the former President visited Doromakese but for reasons not known did not show up despite assurance from the NDC parliamentary candidate and MP, Joseph Mensah, an incident that has sparked anger among the traditional authorities.

However, according to the Benkumhene, Mr Mahama acknowledged he faulted and sent a delegation to the palace on Tuesday morning to apologise on his behalf.

He said they have accepted the apology in good faith with the curses revoked, although they were not targeted at Mr Mahama.

“There is no bad blood between the traditional authorities and Mahama because last four years he visited the palace to engage the chiefs and even addressed the constituents in front of the palace” Obrempong Danso Abeam added.

The chief stated that, their action was to register their displeasure for the disrespect and ill-treatment from NDC members in the area.

Otumfuo destools Wirempehene for abusing sacred oath https://www.adomonline.com/otumfuo-destools-wirempehene-for-abusing-sacred-oath/ Tue, 03 Sep 2024 07:36:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2443097 The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has destooled Wirempehene Nana Opia Mensah II for desecrating the revered Asante Sacred Oath (Ntamkɛseɛ).

The 90-year-old who has reigned for 54 years was reprimanded for disregarding and disrespecting the sacred tradition.

The chief has been stripped of his title due to his attempts to distort historical truths for personal gain, violating both statutory and traditional laws.

Otumfuo announced the decision on Monday, September 2, 2024, during a meeting of the Kumasi Traditional Council at the Manhyia Palace.

“Nana Opia, you knowingly and deceitfully invoked the Great Oath, despite being fully aware that the stool did not rightfully belong to you. You deliberately challenged its ownership, attempting to exploit your long reign to conceal your illegitimacy.

“However, by misusing the Great Oath for personal gain, you have forfeited your claim to the stool. Your actions have left you no choice but to relinquish the throne,” Otumfuo declared.

In a symbolic gesture, the chief’s traditional slippers were promptly removed, marking his destoolment by custom.

The action follows a comprehensive report presented to the Council on August 15, 2024, which revealed that the Aduana Clan, to which Nana Opia Mensah II belongs, is not the legitimate royal house, but rather the Oyoko Clan holds the rightful claim to the throne.

Otumfuo destools three chiefs over ‘galamsey’ https://www.adomonline.com/otumfuo-destools-three-chiefs-over-galamsey/ Tue, 27 Aug 2024 09:46:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2439519 In a dramatic turn of events, Otumfuo Osei Tutu Ii, the Asantehene, has destooled the Gyaasihene, Akyeamehene, and Baamuhene of Sabronum, stripping them of their titles and responsibilities.

The decisive action was taken during the Asanteman Council meeting on August 26, 2024, at the Manhyia Palace.

The destoolment is a direct result of the trio’s involvement in illegal mining, commonly known as ‘galamsey‘, a practice that has plagued the region and drawn widespread condemnation.

The Asantehene’s bold move sends a strong message that the Asante kingdom will not tolerate such activities, which pose a significant threat to the environment and the well-being of its citizens.

Galamsey has been a persistent problem in the region, with many chiefs and community leaders facing criticism for their perceived complicity or inaction.

The Asanteman Council has been under pressure to take decisive action against those involved in the practice.

Following the destoolment, a new Sabronum Manhene, Kofi Asante, has been nominated and selected to take the reins.

This development marks a new chapter for Sabronum, as the community looks to move forward from the challenges posed by galamsey.

The destoolment has sparked mixed reactions, with some hailing Otumfuo Asantehene’s decision as a bold move against galamsey, while others have expressed concerns about the potential consequences for the affected individuals and their families.

Tension mounts in Bimbagu as residents oppose elevation of sub-chief https://www.adomonline.com/tension-mounts-in-bimbagu-as-residents-oppose-elevation-of-sub-chief/ Thu, 15 Aug 2024 14:49:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2434383 The chiefs and people of Bimbagu in the Bunkprugu–Nakpanduri in North East region have appealed to National Security and the National House of Chiefs to stop the ongoing engagements to elevate a sub-divisional chief, Nanik Daana, to a paramountcy status.

The residents said they are opposed to the decision by the North East Regional House of Chiefs and the Mamprugu Traditional Council to promote the chief of Naniik.

They described the intended action as unacceptable and provocative whilst warning of a potential bloodshed if authorities do not quickly intervene.

At a press conference in Bimbagu, the chief and his people also warned the Naniik Daana ever to step foot in Bimbagu if he’s elevated.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the press, we wish to; by this press conference send a strong word of caution to the North East Regional House of Chiefs and the National House of Chiefs. We invite them on the side of caution not to elevate the Naniik Daana to Paramountcy status because it has the potential to ignite armed violence between the two communities”, the residents warned in the statement read by the youth secretary, Lawrence Tiibey Japiong.

“We are therefore calling on them to do the needful by not elevating the said chief for peace to reign. Otherwise, we the youth will use other options and means necessary to bring lasting peace to our community once and for all.”

The angry Bimbagu residents accused one Lawyer Augustine Mahama, a native of Yunyoo, of being the one leading the ongoing efforts to elevate the Naniik Daana. They also cautioned him to stay away from matters about Bimbagu and its localities.

They also challenged the qualification and illegibility of the Naniik Daana to become a Paramount Chief.

“We want to state emphatically here that the Naniik Daana is our guest. He is a guest of the Bagri Daana and any attempt to change the status quo will be resisted fearlessly. The facts must be told that the Naniik Daana is a settler within the Bagri Daana’s jurisdiction and on our farmlands”.

The residents also explained that they had petitioned all the relevant institutions since they first heard the news of the elevation in 2022, and that none of these institutions, including the National Security and the National House of Chiefs, had responded.

“We, as peace lovers, have communicated to all those who matter in this respect as you can see from the exhaustive list of our correspondences. We are using this medium for the last time to call on the National Security Minister, the Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, the North East Regional Minister to pray on the North East Regional House and the National House of Chiefs to halt immediately the process or actions meant to elevate the Naniik Daana to Paramountcy in the interest of peace, and to give peace a chance in Bimbagu and its environs.”

The residents concluded by repeating the vow to ostracize the Naniik Daana from the Bimbagu Naniik community “should he be elevated to Paramountcy against all odds.”

Chieftaincy becoming expensive – Nana Ainoo Kwagyan III https://www.adomonline.com/chieftaincy-becoming-expensive-nana-ainoo-kwagyan-ii/ Mon, 05 Aug 2024 15:44:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2429527 The Divisional Chief of Esiama Ellebelle, Nana Ainoo Kwagyan III, has expressed concern over the rising costs associated with chieftaincy in Ghana.

According to him, what was once a service driven by joy and communal spirit has now transformed into an expensive endeavour, making it difficult for those without significant financial resources to participate.

“People served out of joy in the past, but now everything is about money. Chieftaincy has become expensive; you can’t be part of it if you don’t have money.

The Otumfuo visited Berekum. Transporting his followers to Berekum is very expensive. You need to rent buses and feed them. The crowd that will go is a lot of money,” he stated in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Monday.

Nana Ainoo Kwagyan III also contrasted chieftaincy with governmental positions, noting that while governance often grants access to national wealth, chiefs face significant financial and legal challenges.

“Chieftaincy is not like governance where the country’s wealth is yours when you come into power. The lands that people claim belong to chiefs come with unnecessary litigations. So, before a chief ascends the throne, he needs to prepare himself both physically and spiritually to be able to sit on the seat,” he added.

Yagbonwura lifts ban on Jinapor; blesses him as grandson https://www.adomonline.com/yagbonwura-lifts-ban-on-jinapor-blesses-him-as-grandson/ Fri, 02 Aug 2024 13:59:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2428842 The Overlord of Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-kunuto Jewu Soale I has lifted the ban on Member of Parliament for the Damongo constituency, who doubles as the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor.

This was after Mr. Jinapor, in the company of some government officials, called on the Yagbonwura on Thursday, 1st August 2024 to explain his side of the story to him.

The Yagbonwura banned the Member of Parliament from entering the Jakpa Palace and all other palaces within the Kingdom and had directed Chiefs in Gonjalnd not to grant audience to any group that included the Minister.

The decision of the Yagbonwura followed certain actions that were deemed reprehensible by the Chiefs and people of Gonjaland, by the Minister.

The Minister was, also, alleged to be interfering with matters relating to the Damongo Skin.

Following these reports, the Minister issued a statement affirming his high regard for the chieftaincy institution, the Yagbonwura and all other chiefs for that matter.

He, also, indicated that he had no interest in the Damongo chieftaincy affairs and that he was committed to serving the people of Damongo as their Member of Parliament, and the people of Ghana as a Minister.

Subsequently, President Akufo-Addo sent a delegation led by the Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, to meet with the Yagbonwura to resolve the issue.

The President’s delegation included the Minister for Defence, Hon. Dominic Nitiwul, Savannah Region’s representative on the Council of State, Pkogriwura Adam Zakaria, the Savannah Regional Minister, Saeed Muhazu Jibril, and the Savannah Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Alhaji Iddrisu Sulemana.

Following extensive engagement with the President’s delegation, Mr. Jinapor, in the company of some government officials, called on the Yagbonwura at his Palace on Thursday, 1st August 2024.

The Minister used the opportunity to explain his side of the story to the Yagbonwura and reaffirmed his high regard and respect for the Chieftaincy institution in general, and the Yagbonwura and other Chiefs of the Gonjaland in particularly, as a Prince of Gonjaland.

The Yagbonwura, according to reports from the Palace, after listening to the Minister, expressed satisfaction with his explanation.

He said he had always known the Minister to be a respectful person, who will never denigrate the Chieftaincy institution, nor disrespect the Yagbonwura as his grandfather.

The King said as a Prince of the land, he was certain that the Minister was well-versed in the customs and traditions of Gonja, and would not engage in acts that would be deemed disrespectful to the Chiefs and people of Gonja.

He added that, he was genuinely concerned about the reports he was hearing, which resulted in some of the pronouncements that were made, which was aimed at protecting the dignity of the Chiefs and people of Gonja.

The Yagbonwura thanked the Minister for his humility and for his commitment to getting the matters resolved.

He blessed him as his proud grandson, adding that he is always welcomed to the Jakpa Palace and all other palaces in Gonja for that matter.

Meanwhile, supporters of one of the claimants to the Damongo skin have called on the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs to deliver its judgment in the Damongo Chieftaincy dispute, which has been pending before the Judicial Committee of the House since 2016.

According to the group, although the hearing in the matter has concluded and both parties have filed their respective addresses, the Judicial Committee has failed to deliver its judgment, despite serving notices of judgment on 27th January, and 15th February 2023.

They said the judgment of the House of Chiefs is necessary to bring finality to the dispute and prevent the recurrent clashes that occur being the disputing parties and their supporters.

This was after the Paramount chief of the Gonjaland, Yagbonwura Building-Kunuto Soale Jewu on Sunday, July 22, 2024 banned MP from entering all palaces within the kingdom for interfering in traditional matters in the area.

According to them, the continuous interference of the MP in matters that should be handled within traditional frameworks tends to cause widespread discontent and disaffection among the people.

However, in a statement on Monday July 22, Abu Jinapor refuted the claims, stating that the allegations against him are “totally false”.

“As I have stated time and again, I do not have any interest in the Damongo chieftaincy affairs whatsoever,” he stated.

He emphasized his respect for the chieftaincy institution and its leaders.

“As a bona fide Gonja Prince, I continue to have high regard for the revered chieftaincy institution, the Overlord of Gonjaland, Yagbonwura Bi-kunuto Jewu Soale, and all other chiefs for that matter.

“My role and overarching interest, both as Member of Parliament and Minister of the Republic, is to contribute my modest quota to the development of Ghana, and my beloved constituency of Damongo. I entreat all and sundry to disregard these allegations as same are untrue.

The Lands Minister further urged the public to dismiss these unfounded claims, reaffirming his commitment to his constituents and the people of Ghana.

He said the political campaign season had started and the politicians would call on them as they toured the country.

He asked the chiefs to be tactful in their interactions with the aspirates and to be mindful of their utterances.

The President of the National House of Chiefs explained that as chiefs, they had only one vote just like all other electorates.

His admonition came in the wake of the endorsement of the former president John Dramani Mahama by the chief of Breman, Baffour Kotei Kutin Sraman II during a public lecture at the Christian Service University last Thursday.

Baffour Sraman II, who was the guest of honour at a lecture organised in honour of the former President Mahama, described him as the in-coming President and went on to say that “I believe every one of the words that I have spoken: he is coming back” referring to the former President.

Paramount chief sets record straight on Apesokubi Traditional Area https://www.adomonline.com/paramount-chief-sets-record-straight-on-apesokubi-traditional-area/ Wed, 19 Jun 2024 18:08:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2410720 The Paramount Chief of Apesokubi Traditional Area, Okogyeaman Asiedu Koram II, has clarified falsehoods allegedly being spread by descendants of Akposso immigrants from Togo.

The immigrants have claimed to be the indigenous inhabitants and rightful landowners of the area, which they called “Akposso-kubi”.

However, the chief at a press conference which was heavily attended by residents, chiefs and elders at the International Press Centre here in Accra, has provided historical evidence and official records to prove that the Akans are the true inhabitants of Apesokubi, acquired through conquest and settlement over 300 years ago.

Okogyeaman Asiedu Koram II cited various records, including a 1905 German map, certified documents from the E.P. Church Headquarters, and proceedings from the Kabo River and Asukawkaw River Forest Reserves Enquiry.

These records show that Apesokubi and Akposso are separate areas, with Apesokubi being part of British Togoland/Ghana and Akposso part of French Togoland/Togo.

The paramount chief emphasized that the Akposso immigrants were received by the Akan indigenous citizens and distributed among families, accepting the Apesokubi Stool’s authority.

He warned of a treacherous project, the “Akposso Project”, aimed at extending the Akposso traditional state into Ghana, which could have dire consequences for the indigenous people.

Okogyeaman Asiedu Koram II called for peace and urged the Akpossos to accept the truth, stating, “Let us put aside our differences and live in harmony, as we have for centuries.”
